COALITION GOVERNMENT

CAMERON FOR THE CAMERAS SAY CHEESE!!!

What do people really think about our new government. Tyler Worgan interviewed several people and this is what he found:

BY CHLOE FLETCHER

What do you think about the coalition government? Do you think it will work? One woman said‖ I‘m very disappointed at the outcome of the election and I don‘t think the lib dems have sold off!‖ Someone else said ―Not a great deal at the moment. Time will tell.‖ Do you think that David Cameron will be a good Prime Minister? The women replied ―no‖ and the man agreed with what she had quoted. Do you agree with Gordon Brown resigning? ―Yes‖ said the woman and again the man agreed.

cies. Do you think it is fair how smaller parties were left out of broadcast? ―A little…‖ replied the woman but the man replied ―No‖. Do you think some improvements should be made to the current government? ―Yes‖ stated the woman. The man said ―probably. Hard to tell right now.‖ Who do you think will be more involved in the in the coalition got? Goverment? The woman replied ―Tory‖ also t h e m a n s t a t e d ―Conservatives‖. How do you think it will affect you? The woman replied ―job wise and spending‖ the man stated ―very much‖ How long do you think the coali-

David Cameron born 1966 9th October aged 44 leader of the Liberal Democrats party in 2010 After all the worry the voting ended David Cameron pulled out ahead with the most seats but he still didn‘t have the over all magoratie he had to battle with the Labour party to win over the Liberal Democrats and the votes they had to make a hung parliament. Cameron won the votes he needed and now he has formed a coalition government with Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg! But how will the new government work out? Will there be fights and shouting or

will it run smoothly it‘s all down to them. The day Cameron

walked through the door to ten Downing Street he wore a smile of pride he had his wife hang on to his arm and smiling. He and his partner Nick Clegg have already been in parliament to together and it seemed to go pretty well. Now with a coalition government we‘ll see what happens and weather it is good, bad or neither what happens no one will know until after it happens… So sit tight and enjoy it as it comes!!!

DO YOU THINK HE SAW US CLEGGASAURUS BY CHELSEA FITCH Nicholas Clegg, Leader of the Liberal Democrats party, was born 7 January 1967, and has been the leader of the Lib Dems since the 27th of June 2007, where there was a debate held in Sheffield Hallam. In 2010, the Liberal Democrats were chosen to take part in the election, and Nick Clegg was chosen as the leader. The Liberal Democrats then lost to the Conservative party, whose leader is David Cameron. The two parties have now formed a coalition. Nick Clegg went to

School in London, followed by Robinson College where he studied Social Anthropology. In 2000 Clegg married Miriam Durántes of Valladolid, Spain. They have three sons: Antonio, Alberto and Miguel, who are being brought up bilingually in Spanish and English. Nick Clegg quotes that his sons are "The most important things in his life‖ and that he is ―besotted‖ by them. the Caldecott School in Buckinghamshire and Westminster

GORDON BROWN: THE TRUTH THROUGH—OUT !!! BY BETHANY FIRIMIN James Gordon Brown was born on the 20th February 1951. He was Prime Minister and Leader of the Labour Government after the resignation of Tony Blair. He has a PhD, from the University of Edinburgh, in history and spent his early years as a television journalist. Gordon Brown was elected to Parliament on his second attempt as a Labour MP for Dunfermline East in 1983. Recently, he slipped up on the TV, calling a campaigner a ―bigoted woman.‖ He made a public apology on the radio. When he said he would not make a coalition, Brown resigned. In a goodbye speech,

BY JAKE MEE In February, a methane gas explosion at a coal mine in north-west Turkey killed 13 workers. The safety record of Turkey's coal mining industry lags behind that of most industrial nations, analysts say. "It is not yet certain, but it is believed there are nearly 25 workers underground. We are trying to reach them," Labour Minister Omer Dincer said. The country's worst mining disaster was in 1992, when 270 miners were killed near the

The blast on Tuesday caused an underground chamber to collapse at a mine 20km (12 miles) outside Dursunbey, in Balikesir province. The mine's owner said it had buried the miners nearly 820ft (250m) below the surface. Labour Minister Omer Dincer said officials had initially overstated the death toll because four bodies had been counted twice.

Picture of the new fan taken from Daily Mail

BY KRISTEN SMITH Dyson is well-known for its vacuum cleaners but now they have invented a fan with no visible blades - The Air Multiplier - which they claim is 15 times more efficient than a standard fan. How can you have a fan with no blades? Well, in fact you put the blades somewhere else where they are not visible, in the base. This fan creates the draft of air which is forced out through a slit at the top. The lack of blades actually pushing the air into your face makes the whole device more efficient (and easier to clean)

Dyson's Air Multiplier bladeless fan will come in 10" and 12". Working on this gadget for four years and it will cost £199 in the UK! (Dyson is nothing if not confident of the stupidity of the British buying public.) Not cheap, around $310 at current exchange rates. At that sort of price it had better be good! Yesterday Dyson, which is still privately held, reported that its operating profits more than doubled to £190 million in 2009 as sales rose by 23 per cent because of the hot spell we have been having.

HUBBLE SPOTS PLANET-EATING STAR

A planet eating star, photo taken from the BBC website

BY TYLER WORGAN A Hubble Space Telescope captured evidence of a sun-like star ―eating‖ a nearby planet. Astronomers knew stars were capable of swallowing planets in orbits around them, but this is the first time they have caught evidence. Although the planet was too far away for Hubble to photograph, scientists have created an image of

it, based on analysis of the telescope's data. The discovery was published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. The researchers say the planet has lest than 10 million years before it is completely devoured. It is so close to its star that it completes an orbit in 1.1 Earth days and is superheated

to more than 1,500C. ―We have identified chemical elements never before seen on planets outside our own Solar System‖ Carole Haswell Open University Because of this proximity, the planet's atmosphere has ballooned to nearly three times the radius of Jupiter and is spilling material on to the star. Carole Haswell from the UK's Open University led the research team. She explained: "We see a huge cloud of material around the planet which is escaping and will be captured by the star." Hubble‘s detection of the cloud enables the scientist to draw conclusions about how it was generated. Wasp-12 is a dwarf star located approximately 600 light-years away in the constellation Auriga. The exoplanet was first discovered by the UK's Wide Area Search for Planets (Wasp) in 2008.

3D TV, HERE TO STAY?

3D TV expected to come to the UK in the next couple of months, picture from Google.

BY KRISTEN SMITH TV companies are cashing in on the 3D technology trend by introducing 3D televisions to the UK. Films like Avatar, Alice in Wonderland and UP have stormed the box offices across the world, and the appetite for all things 3D is big. Sony will launch their 3D TVs in Japan in June, and Panasonic plan to start selling theirs in the UK in the next few months. The sets are around £3,000 double the price of a normal flat screen telly. UPGRADE When 3D TV does come to the UK, you'll have to wear special glasses as well as get the new television. It will be expensive to upgrade, but Sky has already said it will launch a 3D channel later this year which will show films and maybe some football. And last year the BBC announced that it is hoping to film some of the 2012 FOOTBALL Football in 3D sounds great doesn‘t it? The ball flying out of the screen at all angles, bring-

ing the action to the viewer. What could be better than actually being in the stadium itself? Well, quite a lot as it happens. I joined about 100 people on Saturday to watch Manchester United versus Chelsea at Bowl Xtreme in Perdiswell, one of three centres trialling the revolutionary Sky Sports coverage in Worcester. Don‘t get me wrong, the picture clarity is seriously impressive and some of the camera angles are superb. You certainly feel more involved in the action but, sadly, the novelty soon wears off. I wanted it to be amazing. I wanted to leave thinking I had seen something special. Granted, it looks great but I‘m not sure exactly what it adds to the reason you‘re watching in the first place, which is to watch football. A punter I spoke to on the way out rated the 3D experience as two out of 10. However, Bowl Xtreme owner Terry Thompson is sold on the idea and can‘t wait for more. From his perspective, it will definitely sell. ―You feel like you‘re there,‖ he said. ―When we can have a projector screen with the surround sound you will feel that you‘re at the

match. It‘s as good as being there.‖ Well, not quite. Sure, people still left before the end and swore at the referee, but there the similarity ended for me. Nothing can replace seeing the action live. And Didier Drogba‘s goal that put Chelsea 2-0 up is still offside whether you‘re watching in 3D, HD or on a black and white portable. Ironically, some of the sports being previewed on the Sky 3D channel before kick-off looked better, particularly the boxing and tennis. Maybe it‘s because the action in those sports is more focused. After all, football is played in a wide open space and there is no guarantee the play will lend itself to the cameras. Sky is set to roll 3D out to homes later this year but, unless you live in a cinema, chances are you won‘t get the full effect. It has to be watched on the big screen and, unfortunately, a 47-inch television at the end of huge function room did not do it justice. That, though, is no fault of Bowl Xtreme and they will be hoping the projectors will be ready in time for the World Cup, also being screened in 3D. They have already virtually sold out for England versus the USA on June 12. Another flaw is the glasses (thankfully, 3D televisions that don‘t need glasses are on the way!). For someone who wears specs all day, having to put on an extra pair is really annoying, not to mention uncomfortable. Thompson, though, does not agree. He added: ―I will be quite comfortable sitting watching a film or a sporting event at home with glasses on if you‘re going to get that effect, it‘s worth it.‖

IPAD OR IBAD

The new ipad is launched today!

Apple the kings of the technology market have made the ipad and it is now on sale in the UK the revolutionary gadget went on sale in the UK computer stores were expecting gadget fans to sleep outside the stores at night and to be queuing down the high street to be the first to get their hands on the new touch screen tablet computer. The portable ipad computer combines the interactivity of the smart phones with the power of a laptop. To produce a device that can be carried around anywhere and which users can read newspapers, magazines and books, view films, play music, play games, check the internet and send emails and also store photo albums and that‘s not all there are plenty of other activities. Eager technology addicts have had to wait over a month for this amazing gadget it was so awaited by people over one million were sold in the first four weeks it was out in the US. You've heard of the iPod and the iPhone, well now the company that makes these gadgets, Apple, has revealed its latest invention - the ipad. It's a cross between a touch screen phone and a laptop, and can be used to watch films, play games and browse the web. At the moment it is only going on sale in America and will cost between around £300 and £500. The idea is that the ipad will be used to download e-books and newspapers. Apple has done a deal with lots of book publishers to allow people do download their favourite reads through the iTunes store. It is not the first touch screen tablet computer though. Earlier this month, companies like Dell and HP showed off similar gadgets at a big electronics show in Las Vegas, in America. What you Need to Know about

ipad The ipad is a tablet computer developed by Apple Inc. Announced on January 27, 2010, it is similar in functionality to the iPhone and iPod touch, running the same operating system (iPhone OS) and almost all of the same applications. Two models have been announced: one with 802.11n Wi-Fi (available in March 2010 worldwide) and one with Wi-Fi, 3G (which can connect to HSDPA cellular networks), and Assisted GPS (available in April in the U.S. and several other countries). The ipad runs a modified version of the iPhone OS and is controlled by a multi-touch LCD sensitive to fingertips, not a stylus. It runs ipad-specific applications as well as those written for the iPhone and iPod touch, including e-book readers. Here are some quotes from a few customers: What is the point of this device, most people have smart phone/laptop, this wont do anything new. still the isheep will buy it just to show their friends LOL. Ill keep my Macbook pro thanks. Would I pay £700 for a 3G 64Gb tablet without Flash or the ability to run any sensible programs? Highly unlikely when I've got a £900 13" Macbook Pro with a 320Gb hard drive which does far far more. I was excited about this product but I think better 'tablet's' will come along. This will not be a big seller. At £250 maybe - not £700. The Elements on ipad is not a game, not an app, not a TV show. It‘s a book. But it‘s Harry Potter‘s book. This is the version you check out from the Hogwarts library. Everything in it is alive in some way.

The capital of Rwanda is called Kigali and is the largest city in Rwanda. The major religion in Rwanda is Christian with almost 90% of the population following (more than half of these Roman Catholic, with Protestant and Adventist minorities) and 5% (mostly Tutsis) are Muslim. When it comes down to government The person at the top is the president, who is head of state, is popularly elected for a seven year term and is eligible for a second term. The first president was Kayibanda and he was elected under the constitution adopted in 1962 and was re-elected in 1965 and 1969.

The Rwandan genocide played a massive part in the history to Rwanda. It happened between April 1994 to June 1994and an estimated 800,000 Rwandans were killed in the space of 100 days. Most of the dead were the Tutsis and the most of those who perpetrated the violence were the Hutus. The genocide was sparked after the death of Rwandan president, Juvenal Habyarimana, a Hutu, when his plane was shot down above Kigali airport on 6 April 1994. A French judge has blamed current Rwandan president, Paul Kagame - at the time the leader of a Tutsi rebel group– and some of his close associates for carrying out the rocket attack.

THE ASH CLOUD

ASH ASH BABY. IT’S WORSE THAN JEDWARD. BY LUKE MORTIMER

One of the main stories in the news is the volcano which erupted recently sending an ash cloud the world. In Iceland, on the 20th March, Eyjafjallajokull erupted, sending a massive cloud of ash, causing airports around the world to stop flights. Airports have been furious, as the volcano has cost some of them around 28 million pounds (£28,000,000), just this month. There are still thousands of passengers stranded, still trying to get back to the UK, including doctors and teachers, which have a major affect on society. Since the eruption, passenger traffic has rose by 0.2% (Decreased by 80%), which has caused some airports to close down.

Eyjafjallajokull erupted, sending ash everywhere Picture from the mail

INTERVIEW WITH MR GOODFELLOW BY LUKE MORTIMER

We interviewed I.T teacher Mr Goodfellow, who was stranded in Africa after the volcano erupted. He told us that when he first heard about the ash cloud, he thought someone was just pulling his leg.

It wasn‘t cheap either. It cost Mr Goodfellow £500 for an extra week in the hotel, and another £255 for calling people for help out side of Africa, which isn‘t cheap. He also missed several important events and had to get people to cover for him in his lessons. This annoyed him because normally he gives the substitute work to give the students, but since he was in Africa, he couldn‘t set any work. But how did it happen? Normally, when volcanoes erupt they don‘t produce much ash. But in this case, there was a load of ice covering the volcano. When this melted it produced lots more stream and smoke that usual, this was blown all over the world. When the smoke hits the engine, it cools down into a glass like substance which sticks to the engine and stops it. And when the engines stop, so does the plane. The key facts: It has cost 28 million pounds It is stopping planes from flying Many people have been stranded because of it. It has caused a major problem

DON’T EVEN TRY, YOUR NOT ALLOWED TO FLY

We interviewed I.T teacher Mr. Goodfellow at Ellis Guilford School. He and geography teacher Miss Fuller went to Africa for a school trip. After spending there time at a local school, they tried to get back only to find out that they couldn't because of the ash cloud. This is what he said: What was your first reaction when you heard about the ash cloud? “Shock. I thought someone was pulling my leg.” Where did you stay until you could get back? “A hotel let me stay for extra week for extra £500 and my phone bill was £255.” How did this affect your classes and teaching? “People having to cover my lessons and someone else had to do the plan the work.” Were you worried? “I wasn’t worried.” Was any one worried about you? “My mum and dad were worried and so was Mr. Plummer.” Did you miss anything important while you were away? “I missed some meetings and a year 10 football match.”

Lots of ash was forced out the top of the volcano

Did you see anyone else who was stranded? “Three other teachers from Birmingham, one who couldn’t get back for three weeks. I also saw some people sleeping in an airport.” Did it annoy you having to stay there for longer? “No, it was ok, I got watch more lessons and do more things than I could have”

It has cost so much money and has troubled so many people, that in someway, it has troubled everyone. Scientists are doing everything they can in order to find a way to stop the ash cloud earlier than expected. The worrying thing is that the planet may be affected by 20 to 30 years.

People sleeping at the airport

So far, over 1.2 million people have been affected in some way, with many more to be delayed or stranded. Its causing families to be worried, airports to lose there money, is there anything that can stop this horrible cloud of gas, ash and stream?

The 2010 Extension and Achievement High Achievers: Standing Proud

FROM CHERYL COLE TO PLANET EATING STARS BY MR DYER On Thursday May 27 2010 20 year 7 students from the high achievers group attended the e.learning centre at Clifton. Their

EDITOR’S COLUMN: FACEBOOK TAKES OVER

Chelsea and Bethany: Editors in disguise

BY BETHANY FIRMIN Facebook is a popular site where you can play games, chat and support groups. But is it more sinister than it seems? People lie about their age so they can join. For me it was one year, but recently I have seen children that are only seven years old! And things get worse… Facebook are doing little to stop this. There have been stories about children being

followed home by people pretending to be teenagers. When I first joined somebody I hadn‘t heard of wanted to be my friend! This also could provoke cyber bullying when arguments at school go online. There are a lot of people who will disagree with me but I‘m sure they don‘t want to be followed home as well. This is a topic that people don‘t always think about but it is important. Most will think I am an idiot but if you say you are six years older than you really are then you could get into trouble. It‘s not just facebook , it‘s twitter and youtube as well. Never go on a website that you are too young for unless you have permission. It could stop you from getting a stalker.

world cup in South Africa and completed a sports round up. The weirdly wonderful Max produced a weird and wonderful page which covers an odd range of topics. Some students were able to put some articles together on the recent election and Luke Mortimer interviewed Mr Goodfellow about his delay in Africa due to the ash cloud. Our editor Beth had a big issue with Facebook and our subeditor Chelsea is not that impressed with the type of music radios seem to be playing at the minute. As well as trying to sneak a free hot chocolate some students put together stories from the day like Cheryl Cole‘s divorce from Ashley Cole. I‘m sure Fabio Capello is a little concerned about his star left back and I‘m certain Cheryl will bounce back. Games expert Sian has put together a few quizzes for people to do, I hope she knows the answers, Elizabeth obviously goes to the cinema far too much and it was a surprise to see Jake Mee calm and quiet for more than 10 minutes, but this was mainly due to the Timeout and Jaffa Cake bars. Historian Sean gave us a history of May 27 and scientist Tyler fascinated

us with planet eating stars. A good day was had by all and we all hope it turns out ok!!!

POEM OF THE DAY Deep in the meadow, under the willow A bed of grass, a soft green pillow Lay down your head, and close your sleepy eyes And when again they open, the sun will rise Here it's safe, here it's warm Here the daisies guard you from every harm Here your dreams are sweet and tomorrow brings them true Here is the place where I love you. Deep in the meadow, hidden far away A cloak of leaves, a moonbeam ray Forget your woes and let your troubles lay And when again it's morning, they'll wash away Here it's safe, here it's warm Here the daisies guard you from every harm Here your dreams are sweet and tomorrow brings them true Here is the place where I love you.

CO-EDITOR’S COLUMN: DON’T BOTHER KNOCKIN’ IF MY STEREO’S ROCKIN’ BY CHELSEA FITCH The music these days has been labelled ‗amazin‘ and sick‘, but are the new-age musicians brainwashing this generation and taking away independency? Personally, I think it is. The new music style is also affecting the behaviour and language of teenagers and young adults, sometimes even children. Artists such as Ke$ha and Tinie Tempah are inflicting language and behaviour that

makes us seem at war—the Chavs vs. the Independents. People have the right to say what they are feeling through songs and lyrics, but in the new age that just isn‘t the trend anymore.

The answer is six socks. If Ben takes out five socks, he could have one of each colour, with no two matching colours. But if he takes out six socks, two have to be the same color, since there are only five colours. (Sorry we tricked you with all that unnecessary information!)
