Canvassing your support Belinda Gray and Sally Ball had no idea when they organised a charity exhibition called Art for Cure that in just its second year it would grow into a three-day exhibition featuring over eighty artists and attract the support of a host of well-known celebrities. That first exhibition, which was held at Belinda’s house in 2014, came about because Belinda, who had just completed treatment for breast cancer, wanted to try and raise funds for the charity ‘Breast Cancer Now’. With the help of her friend Sally, they decided on an exhibition of paintings and sculptures, and sourced a wide range of artists to take part. “We wanted to have a broad cross-section of work on display, and as well as asking well-known local figures, also searched 4
galleries across East Anglia and London for up and coming young talent. It was important to have a mix of art that was both affordable and interesting.” It was huge success. They welcomed over 2500 visitors to Belinda’s home, sold a staggering £200,000 worth of paintings and sculptures, and raised an amazing £100,000. It was an incredible achievement and, as it turned out a very poignant experience for both friends, as in the run up to the event Sally herself was also diagnosed with
who’s about
breast cancer. With a cause so close to both of their hearts, and after the incredible response and support they received, they have decided to do it all again, and Art for Cure is back; this time being held at the magnificent Glemham Hall in Suffolk.
The funds raised are going towards setting up a recovery programme in Suffolk where people can have access to a range of healing workshops, providing them with the support and confidence they need to get their lives back on track.
Sally explains that this new venue has given them the opportunity to grow. “We will have five rooms of paintings and are turning the grounds into an outdoor sculpture garden. There will be a children’s marquee, afternoon tea on the terrace, and a pop-up restaurant where you can book lunch cooked by chef Peter Harrison”. Sally, Belinda and their tireless committee are passionate about Art for Cure, and their motivation is obvious. With the chances of developing breast cancer now at 1 in 8, it is real possibility that most of us will know someone whose life has been turned upside down by this dreadful disease.
Also new this year is ‘Make your Mark’, a genius idea that allows celebrities to offer their support by painting a canvas that will then be sold at the exhibition via a silent auction. It is a truly unique opportunity to buy work by the likes of Ed Sheeran or Jim Broadbent, Mark Rylance or Joan Collins, and quickly scanning the room I can’t help but ask, “Have you seen any canvases yet? Are they any good?” Sally smiles knowingly, “You’ll have to wait and see.” Art for Cure, Glemham Hall from Saturday 30th April to Monday 2nd May. www.artforcure.org.uk 5

Handbags & gladrags The creativity that goes into an outfit that works can be quite outstanding. By ‘works’ I mean that it looks both fabulous and appropriate for the event; be that work, early evening drinks or a walk on the beach. Furthermore, it is comfortable, flattering and utilises a suitable amount of layers. The time it takes to create the particular golden outfit can be minutes or way too long. However, I am thrilled to announce that I have recently developed a new skill that has enhanced my daily life immensely; quite simply I now choose my work clothes the night before.
about style
No doubt there are people that have been doing this for years but I have only just tuned in. The main reason for my last minute clothing decisions, often feeling cold in the dark, was that I thought I must know my mood before I could select my clothes. How wrong I was! I can now decide what I want to wear the day before and, amazingly, I feel absolutely fine about it. Wanting to be ready for the day in an outfit that works for me is in large part due the fact that I never know whom I might bump into; past surprises include Jude Law, Princes Charles and Andrew, Tyrone Mings and Mike Atherton. A diverse list that I hope will soon include Daniel Craig. If DC does fleetingly come into my life, I want to be ready and I reckon if my outfit is working it might help to ‘still my beating heart’.

about interiors
Looking like something lifted from the page of a fairy tale, The House in The Clouds is a familiar landmark along the coastal skyline. But it is only when owner Sylvia Le Comber welcomes me to take a look around her remarkable family home do I realise there is more to this fantastical appearance than meets the eye. The day I visit the weather is sombre; the towering house shrouded in the dull grey of February, but once inside it is warm and welcoming, and as I begin to explore I can feel my spirits lifting with every floor I ascend. How can you not feel inspired and cheered by the amazing views that greet you at every twist and turn? The interior is not what I expected, instead of the clichĂŠd hues of pebble white and ocean blue that adorn most seaside holiday lets, this is a rich assortment of antique furniture, ornate tapestries, trinkets and paintings; layers of family life that have been collected over the
years, and I am beguiled by its charm, immediately feeling at home, as if returning to an old friend. In the kitchen a large scrubbed pine table with benches down both sides looks like it has hosted many a family gathering, and nearby a wooden lattice is strung up with pots and pans, skillets and sieves, all ready to serve up a hearty meal and on the walls framed vintage posters sit alongside botanical prints and a copy of The Last Supper. Up on the first floor the woodpanelled sitting room is gorgeous; deep 19
about interiors
sofas with plumped velvet cushions entice you to sink down after a blustery walk along the beach and in one corner a window seat is the perfect spot to curl up with a book. Up again and again, and the second, third and fourth floors are home to the bedrooms, all decorated in vibrant yellows, fuchsia pinks and bright blues, and sharing the same breath-taking views across the boating lake to the watery shadow of Aldeburgh beyond. Themes run through the dÊcor of these rooms. There is a Matisse room, a pretty pink room, an oriental room and the Nun’s room, which is home to a series of religious paintings and, rather bizarrely, beds that came from a nunnery in Dagenham. With a mischievous smile, Sylvia tells me that the large picture of the nun that watches over this room regularly goes missing, only to be found coyly hidden inside the wardrobe 20
once the guests have departed! On our way up to the top floor Sylvia explains that the house was built in 1923 for a personal friend of Glencairne Stuart Ogilvie, the man who was responsible for designing and building the model village of Thorpeness. Although the lower floors were always lived in, the whole top floor was actually disguising a huge water tank that had the capacity to hold 50,000 gallons and served the village until the 1960s. Sylvia’s family purchased the house in 1977, taking on the task of removing the tank and converting this top floor into a large open plan living room. It is a wonderful use of space, with a gallery running along three sides and there is room for both a table tennis and snooker table, as well as various seating areas for relaxing or playing games on wet afternoons and an eclectic mix of
about interiors
stuffed heads, including buffalo, antelope and a caiman, give it a whiff of colonial splendour. But it is the dizzying panoramic views that make this room so special, and I don’t think I would ever tire of looking out across the infinite horizon of the North Sea. Listening to Sylvia it is obvious that she and her family feel blessed to have had ‘The House in The Clouds’ as part of their lives for over forty years, and they still gather here for two weeks in August to add yet more layers to those happy memories. For the rest of the year they let it as a holiday home and people are fascinated by the house. Passers-by, fondly known by the family as the ‘excuse-mes’ love to stop and ask questions and, although reluctant to fall in with this crowd, I do have some questions of my own. I have noticed, hiding behind curtains, peeking down
from mantelpieces and secretly gathering on window sills that the house is full of fairies. I am intrigued. Sylvia smiles knowingly and shows me a poem by the front door that was written by Mrs Malcolm Mason, the friend of the Ogilvie’s who originally lived here. The opening stanza reads, “The fairies really own this house, or so the children say. In fact, they all of them moved in upon the self-same day.” Sylvia admits that she regularly adds to this fairy family, buying any little winged waif and stray that she finds on her travels, and believes that they are the silent keepers of the house. And, as I leave I can’t help but think that if fairies really do exist then this magical family home is the perfect place for them to live. www.houseintheclouds.co.uk 21

about the land
Milking the truth 30
about the land
At the Calf at Foot Dairy over a few pints of their deliciously creamy raw milk, we catch up with Fi Provan and meet the ladies in her life; a herd of beautiful doe-eyed Jersey cows and their calves. I have always had a romantic notion of owning house cow, popping out every morning to fill a jug with fresh creamy milk to stir through my porridge. The reality however involves hours of hard work, blood, sweat and tears, as I soon discover when I take a trip to Home Farm, Somerleyton to visit the Calf at Foot Dairy. During the colder winter months, the herd lives up at the farm and so when I arrive at the yard it is busy with mucking out, feeding, sweeping and washing down. Fi, who started the dairy back in 2011 with just two Jersey cows, now has a herd of twenty seven Jerseys and Jersey-crosses, which she manages with her daughter Poppy and a small army
of enthusiastic students who are there for work experience or as part of a college course. Growing up in Suffolk I have visited dairy farms before, and indeed have happy childhood memories of cycling to the farm in the village and being allowed a beaker of cold creamy milk, scooped straight from the tank as I watched the cows being milked. But the Calf at Foot Dairy is different. Not only are the cows allowed to keep their calves; they are all 100% grass fed and the milk they produce is sold raw, unpasteurised and unhomogenised. All three of these factors are equally important 31
about the land
to Fi, who is passionate about animal welfare and has been an active campaigner since she was a teenager. The daughter of a country vet, she spent the long hot summers of her childhood helping out on her best friend’s dairy farm, and it was here that her love of the gentle, sweet natured Jersey cow and her desire to one day have her own herd all began. Not one to be tamed by the classroom, Fi admits to being a ‘bit of a rebel’ at school, and after her desire to become a farmer was swept to one side by her parents, she ended up going to cookery college. Although not her preferred career path it was here that she learnt the science behind the food industry; laying the foundations of knowledge that she has built on over the years and that are now an important part
32
of her business. It has been scientifically proven that organic milk from grass-fed cows is not only more nutritious than that from grain-fed cows, but it also contains higher levels of Vitamin E, beta-carotene, protein and essential fatty acids such as omega-3 and Conjugated Linoleic Acid. Fi also believes in the power of raw milk. “It is one of healthiest whole foods you can buy, packed with goodness and healthy bacteria, and because we don’t heat treat the milk, it still contains its natural enzymes and can therefore be enjoyed by people who are lactose-intolerant.” And, after trying a glass I would have to agree. It is absolutely delicious, rich and creamy; just how I remember. The cows themselves lead a very natural life and for Fi the fact that they are dairy cows and yet still keep their calves is
about the land
hugely important. She is out to prove that producing high quality milk with fantastic health benefits that can be sold at a premium is a viable farming practice. She only milks once a day and would expect to get 10-20ltrs per cow, as opposed to 30ltrs from a standard dairy cow. It sells at £3 a litre and at the moment she relies on farmer’s markets, online orders and drop-ins for her sales and has a 24-hour open fridge policy. “We leave a light on in the barn and the radio on low so people can come and collect milk whenever they want.” I rather like the idea of a midnight trip to the fridge, and can imagine people lingering as the cows come over to investigate these strange night-time visitors. She also encourages school visits, wowing children with the fact that she can call each cow over by name when it is time for them to be milked.
Setting up the dairy has been a long hard journey for Fi who has had to cope with financial worries, the stress of finding the herd a new home, the red tape, rules and regulators, and of course the pressure of the long hours that come with caring for animals. Looking around at her neat dairy, the immaculately clean parlour and obviously contented cows, I feel huge admiration for her, and she should be proud of the fact that she has made her dream come true. As I pull out of the farmyard I turn to see Fi on top of the muck heap, pitchfork in hand like a bovine Boadicea, her loyal herd of Jerseys standing patiently below, ready to fight for their cause and to face any challenges that lie ahead. www.the-calf-at-foot-dairy.co.uk 33
New Headmaster at Framlingham College’s Prep School, Brandeston Hall A prep school education should be rigorous and challenging, but it must also be creative, vibrant and, above all, fun. At a time when schools so often surrender their individuality in the face of rigid testing and regulation, we feel passionately that children should be able to carry on doing the stuff that children ought to be doing for as long as they possibly can. For that reason, a Brandeston education remains every bit as diverse as it was when the school was established in its idyllic, rural haven nearly seventy years ago. From sports pitches to laboratories and from Art and Design to Music, Drama and Technology you’ll find children confidently expressing themselves and discovering new talents. They work hard but always enjoy their learning and they carry that passion with them for life. While we are understandably proud of our impressive academic record, we know that long term success is built on broader qualities and values. Well-being, resilience and citizenship feature highly amongst these. Brandeston is a happy, nurturing school where children feel valued and inspired. We celebrate difference and encourage pupils to communicate respectfully, to work well together and, above all, to care for those around them and the world beyond. We value kindness and service every bit as highly as academic prowess and all round talents. But it’s not just the children that are prioritised and happy parents are a crucial part of the learning partnership.

We find out why Sarah Cole and her team at The Jewellery Studio in Framlingham are still adding a sparkle to peoples’ lives after twenty-five years in the business. Sarah’s love of the trade grew from her time working as a Saturday girl at The Jewellery Workshop in Diss, a family run business that specialises in bespoke design, jewellery repair and restoration. With a natural flair for creativity Sarah knew she wanted to follow a career path that allowed her to use her hands, and so after school she signed up for a City & Guilds course in diamond mounting and was lucky enough to be accepted back to the same shop as an apprentice. Under the skilled and watchful eye of their experienced team of jewellers she soon demonstrated an ability to create beautifully designed work and an attention to detail that would hold her in good stead for the years to follow.
After qualifying Sarah worked for a short while at Croydons in Bury St Edmunds, but her plan was always to set up her own business and so in 1990 she moved into the Old Mews, Framlingham and opened The Jewellery Studio. The shop stocks a wide range of traditional and contemporary jewellery, including pieces that have been handmade in the workshop, as well as a selection of quality silverware, gifts, watches and a collection of antique rings. It has a lovely familiar feel to it, and every time I pop in there is always someone at the counter, either discussing a new strap for their watch, looking for a pair of earrings that exactly match the ones they used to own years ago, or deliberating over 37

christening presents or a charm bracelet for their goddaughter’s birthday. Lyn, who has worked alongside Sarah from the start, is often to be found in the workshop ready to help with restoration or repair work and Linda and Catherine who have both worked in the shop for more than fifteen years are always on hand to answer any questions. While up at 9:2:5, Sarah’s other shop on the Market Hill which sells a range of gifts and costume jewellery, you will find the industrious Bethany who has a real flair for creating the window displays.“I am lucky to have such a fabulous team behind me and together we always try to make sure our customers feel valued. We believe in good old fashioned customer service and whatever the request will always endeavour to help.” This ethos has led to a very loyal following 38
and for Sarah and her team it also means that they have been a constant throughout the lives of many of their customers: on hand to help with the all-important choosing of the engagement ring; offering congratulations on the birth of their first child when they come looking for christening presents; designing their eternity rings and celebrating anniversaries and milestone birthdays as well. Although busy with the day to day running of the business, Sarah still relishes the private commissions. “I love working with people and coming up with a bespoke design that incorporates all of their ideas and suggestions.” These have included designing pieces using much loved precious family stones, or creating individual handmade items. “I was recently commissioned to create a necklace out of
about design
an assortment of old gold jewellery that had sentimental value. It was quite a task; melting down the gold and then rolling it out thinly so I could make the individual links, but when I saw the look of pleasure on my customer’s face I felt so thrilled to have been able to help, and I love the fact that I have added a new chapter to the story behind that particular piece of jewellery.” In her workshop she shows me the tools of her trade, all of which look and sound like medieval torture weapons: the vice, ring stretcher, rolling mill, bangle mandrels, soldering torch, a leather skin, and drills and files of all shapes and sizes. It is precise, often fiddly work and Sarah’s blackened finger tips identify her as a true craftsman. She explains that the majority of the precious stones are still sourced from Hatton Garden, London’s famous jewellery
quarter. “When we are designing an individual piece, we choose the stones and then make the actual setting, say for a ring or a necklace, using silver, gold or platinum. The piece is then sent to another specialist in Hatton Garden who I have used for the past 25 years, who will set the stones and do the hand engravings.” I had not realised that each stage of the process required such individual expertise and that it was such a complex process. Surrounded by so many beautiful things I ask if she has any favourites. “I do love the semi-precious stones, especially rainbow moonstones and blue topaz, as they have such an incredible depth of colour but, given a choice, I would always pick a beautifully cut diamond in a very simple setting.” I couldn’t agree more. www.sarahcolejewellery.co.uk 39

about gardens
My name’s Spring. I’m probably the most welcomed guest in the horticultural calendar. My gardens rely on me for colour and new life. While I wait for Winter to wind things up, I usually sleep and build strength so I can burst through soils in March. But this year I made a mistake and now I’m worried I’ve let my gardens down. It wasn’t really my fault. I got the usual cues – the singing birds, the warmer air – and thought Winter was on his way out. So, knowing how eagerly I’m anticipated, I sprang into action, making daffodils trumpet yellow and blossoms blush pink in the sun. But he tricked me! Winter hadn’t left at all, and before I knew it he’d dressed my blooms in frosty veils and left my daffodils to shiver in the snow.
He’s confused me. I think I’ve peaked too soon. What do I do next? Ah, Spring! Don’t let Winter get to you; he can be so cranky and unpredictable. It may feel as if you’ve peaked too early but look at it another way – you’ve stirred the loins in garden beds and brought record-breaking colour to a grey time of year. Hardly a crisis. Don’t dwell on what you can’t change. Channel your energy into bulbs and buds that you know will put on a good show. Irises, magnolias, bluebells and primulas are all waiting in the wings, so give them centre stage and gardens will applaud. Trust me – once buds have popped and flowers are all unfurled, your mistake will be but pollen on the breeze.

about gardens
Ready, steady, grow March is the start of the new gardening year and although our to-do lists lengthen with the light of each day, there’s no denying the joy of being back in wellies, a trowel in hand. As our bodies adjust positions from the slouch of winter to the crouch of spring, our gardens flex their own leafy limbs, ready for action. But you’ll need to get in training if you’re going to match the pace. Start your outdoor regime as early as possible. Get muscles warmed-up with digging, weeding and mulching. Stretch biceps as you cut back dead stems, and strengthen quads by lunging with spades in veggie patches.
Tales from the potting shed 44
March Spring-clean borders and beds Prune bush roses and vigorous climbers Move deciduous trees and shrubs Sow lettuce, rocket, radishes, onions, leeks, turnips and parsnips
Once everything’s more taut and trim, you’ll be ready to add in some weights: lift and move shrubs or deciduous trees; bring out the mower, blades set high, and stride over lawns at a brisk pace. And if you think you’re winning the race, don’t rest on your laurels – a garden will always outrun you. Stick to your regime, little and often, and not only will your Epsom bath salts last longer but your garden will stay in perfect shape too. Sarah-Jane Page

about food
I have a weakness for sweetness. Offer me cake and no matter what the time of day, I will always say yes, and so when pastry chef Henrietta Inman asks me over to talk about her new book ‘Clean Cakes’ I am there like a shot of date syrup. Henrietta has been a part of the Suffolk food scene for several years, delighting visitors to farmers’ markets, pop-ups and food festivals with her beautifully presented macaroons, dainty cupcakes and exquisite brownies. She learnt her craft as a pastry chef in the busy kitchens of some of London’s finest restaurants, including the Michelin-starred Lanesborough Hotel, and this has given her a deep understanding of the precise and meticulous methods required for the art of pâtisserie. On returning to Suffolk in 2013 to set up her own business she began to take inspiration from her surroundings and was soon incorporating local fresh ingredients into
all her recipes, using raw honey straight from the hive, collecting free-range eggs from her hens who enjoy life pottering around the vegetable patch, and gathering flowers and herbs from her own garden. However, with the recent focus on healthy eating making culinary headlines, Henrietta explains that she felt she needed to push the boundaries of her own baking even further, and so she decided to stop using any processed ingredients. “I began experimenting with gluten-free flours such as quinoa and chestnut, and discovered an amazing range of natural sweeteners including things like date syrup, coconut sugar and Palmyra nectar powder, and by 49
about food
using nut milks and extra virgin cold pressed rapeseed oil the recipes were also dairy-free.” With her store cupboard now jar to jar with this amazing selection of healthy, nutritious and natural ingredients Henrietta allowed her creativity flow and the result was ‘Clean Cakes’; her beautiful new cookbook which contains over seventyfive delicious recipes, all free from gluten, dairy and refined sugar. As we chat I begin to flick through the pages of Henrietta’s book and find I am soon lost in a world of dark chocolate dipped peanut butter and jelly dreams; where raspberry and rose tartlets with a pistachio frangipane float alongside a baked banana, date and pecan loaf drizzled with a warm spiced caramel sauce. It is a feast for the eyes, beautifully photographed, with images that will have you drooling 50
over the page and I have to resist the urge to actually stroke the picture of the pumpkin, carrot and walnut cake with a cashew orange frosting. It doesn’t seem possible that these amazing cakes and tarts are actually good for you, but she assures me that they are packed with natural ingredients and nourishing superfoods. I ask if some of the more specialised ingredients are easy to source and it is encouraging to hear that most things can now be found at your local supermarket or health food shop. In the book Henrietta also offers some sensible tips on how to stock your larder with the essentials such as buying nuts, seeds, dried fruits, flours and sweeteners in bulk, and how to prepare ahead by reaping the bounties that each season offers and freezing them for future use. There is also a section on how to make nut butters, cream and milks, gluten and
about food
dairy free pastry and natural fruit purees. It is a book that asks you to experiment with flavours and to think again when it comes to baking sweet treats, offering the reader a philosophy that threatens to banish my Saturday donut fix forever. In a world where food intolerance and allergies are seemingly on the increase, Henrietta’s book fits perfectly alongside a new batch of rising stars, such as ‘Deliciously Ella’ by Ella Woodward and ‘River Cottage Gluten Free’ by Naomi Devlin. Only released on the 18th February, ‘Clean Cakes’ is already attracting the attention of the national press and Henrietta has found herself sharing a slice or two with Gaby Roslin on her BBC Radio London Show and also having an eight recipe article in the Daily Mail’s You Magazine. The book is currently available on Amazon and will also be
on the shelves of supermarket giants Sainsbury’s and Waitrose soon, and looking through the reviews it is clear that her book is set to be part of the next food revolution. As I leave, Henrietta passes me a gift of some chocolate truffle teff brownies wrapped in parchment, and back at the office we check out their credentials. They are a recreation of some brownies that Henrietta tried in Ecuador; supposedly the best she has ever tasted, and silently we put them to the test. Rich and chocolatey with layers of caramel and coconut and a hint of sea salt, they are utterly divine and definitely hit my sweet spot. This delicious showstopper from Henrietta Inman’s new book ‘Clean Cakes’ is perfect for any occasion. Clementine and pomegranate jewel cake Ingredients Clementine cake 450g (1lb) clementines (about 5) 4 large eggs 150g (5¼ oz) coconut sugar 225g (8oz) ground almonds 1 tsp baking powder
Pomegranate jewel syrup 120ml (4fl oz) 100 per cent pomegranate juice, not from concentrate 30g (1oz) raw honey 1 tbsp pomegranate molasses 1 large pomegranate, about 450g (1lb), plus extra seeds for serving
Method Place the clementines in a lidded saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring to the boil, turn down to a low heat and simmer for 2 hours, topping up the water as necessary, until the fruit is soft. Drain and leave to cool. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/gas 4. Grease the bottom and sides of a 23cm (9in) springform ‘crown’ cake tin (or a 20cm (8in) loose-bottomed cake tin) and line the base with baking parchment. 56
Cut the cooled clementines in half, remove pips but keep skins on and then blitz in a food processor to form a smooth pulp. Whisk together the eggs and sugar, mix in the ground almonds and baking powder, then add the clementine pulp, folding in lightly until well combined. Pour into the tin and bake for 40 minutes, rotating halfway. If the top is looking a bit too brown, reduce the temperature to 170C/325F/ gas 3 for the last 10 minutes of baking. Remove from the oven and leave to cool completely in the tin. Now place the pomegranate juice, honey and pomegranate molasses in a saucepan and bring to a boil, turn down the heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat then break open the pomegranate over the pan, letting the seeds and juices fall into the syrup. Stir well. Remove the cake from the tin and transfer to a serving plate. Generously pour over the syrup and seeds, then slice and serve with extra pomegranate seeds. Keeps for up to five days in a sealed container, preferably in the fridge. It freezes well, too.

round & about
The going is easy Located just a few miles out of Woodbridge, Sutton Heath is the perfect destination for a lazy Sunday walk, which is just what we all felt like a few weekends ago. With a late lunch booked at the Unruly Pig, we met in the public carpark at 1 o’clock. As usual there was the initial debate about which way to go, the shouting and silent swearing as the dogs disappear in different directions, and the inevitable “I’m hungry”, “I’m thirsty” comedy routine from the kids just seconds after we finally set off! Once calm is restored, even though we all secretly know we are already heading in the wrong direction, we settle down to enjoy our surroundings. Sutton Heath is part of The Sandlings, an area of lowland heath that once covered much of east 62
Suffolk, and the carpets of heather and gorse are bordered by mixed woodlands and open farmland. There are numerous paths criss-crossing the way ahead and, as the map has by now been folded and packed away in disgust, we decide to follow the dogs and just head in a circle. As our pack starts to string out, the leisurely pace, more suited to some than others, allows time to catch up on news, to climb the odd tree, and to hunt through the deep piles of leaves for the perfect pine cone. Although Spring has graced us with her presence early this year, with daffodils and blossom cheering us at the roadside, here in the woods it is as if everything has been covered with a blanket of brown; brown bark, brown branches, brown leaves
round & about
– not so handy when we all travel with brown dogs and children wearing an assortment of brown clothes. Thank goodness for Poppy and her bright red hat. The sandy soil means the going is easy, with only a few brackish puddles to leap over – or walk straight through if you are a certain labradoodle who likes the two-tone look - and in amongst the woods we find the perfect tree for a photo session. The children all clamber up to strike a pose, including Dad Damian, who manoeuvres out on a limb and teeters manfully. After a few games of hide and seek and more rambling in a sort of circular path we come to the edge of the trees and see the glint of the carpark in the distance. Nearing home, a fallen tree waves its silvery tentacles goodbye and before we know it we arrive at the Unruly Pig with a half hour to spare.
Having worked up an appetite we are all looking forward to lunch and, over a restorative G&T and a few pints of Adnams, make our choices which include roasted 35-day aged sirloin with dripping roasties, grilled Sea Bream with a black olive hollandaise and also mini cheese burgers with homemade fries, all of which are delicious and cooked to perfection. The convivial atmosphere, interesting décor and excellent wine list lulls one end of the table into that relaxed state of happiness that allows the other end to take full advantage and order an extra round of chocolate brownies. It has been a truly lovely afternoon, and as the candles are lit and the curtains drawn it takes all our self-control not to stay and roll into the next sitting. www.theunrulypig.co.uk 63
