who’s about
The jet set Doors to manual and cross check. I have just arrived at Bentwaters Park, an old US Air Force base near Rendlesham, to meet Jesse Quin, the bass player with British rock band Keane, who has opened a new creative studio here called Old Jet. Jesse, who has recently moved back to Suffolk with his young family, took on the renovation of the abandoned Deputy Commander’s Building on the base just over a year ago, and in that time he has transformed this rather soulless building into a vibrant creative hub. His wish was to create a place where like-minded professionals could have not only have a unique place to work, but also a place to share ideas and explore new artistic avenues. It is an idea that has caught on fast, and as testament to his vision, the 4
rooms are currently rented by numerous photographers, an interior designer, a TV and Film Company, a dressmaker, and various musicians and artists. Upstairs, commanding views out across the airfield, Jesse’s own studio has all the trimmings of any well respected musician: a collection of assorted guitars casually leant up against the wall, battered leather sofas for just ‘hanging out’, and the all essential drum kit. Around the room there are also various keyboards, mikes and
who’s about
amps, plus an impressive recording console, because as well as still being involved with Keane, Jesse continues to write and record song lyrics and melodies for other artists. Jesse and his business partner Will, from alternative rock band Brigade, have also taken on the buildings next door and in one, a massive 2500 sq.ft and 40 ft high building, known for obvious reasons as ‘The Flight Simulator’, they are looking to offer touring bands a state of the art rehearsal space. With no natural light and its huge proportions it is perfect for testing lighting effects, and the idea is for bands to come and set up as they would for a gig so they can programme their whole show before they go on tour. This is an exciting proposition, not just for Jesse and Will, but also for the local area as their plan involves championing local food suppliers and producers to the artists who visit.
Jesse wants this whole project to really engage with the Suffolk he loves; he grew up in Framlingham and is an ex Thomas Mills student, and his mum Charity, a well known folk singer, still lives here. Back in the communal kitchen of the main building we warm up over coffee around a large scrubbed pine table that is literally the creative hub of Old Jet. Wooden floors meet muted pastel walls; industrial fixtures are mixed with soft contemporary lighting; a Ferguson record player invites you to flick through the pile of vinyl records and put on an old favourite, and it is not hard to imagine the place abuzz with creativity. I feel excited and invigorated by my visit and as I head to departures, I feel certain that with Jesse’s drive, vision and passion this venture will soon get off the ground. www.oldjet.co.uk

Handbags & gladrags about style
Back in issue one, I strongly desired a yellow handbag and I still do. I still have not bought it and I really must do something about this. I foresaw that yellow was the colour to lift my tired outfits and now this has been confirmed as yellow is the Spring/Summer 2015 colour. There was a time when I would not even have carried anything yellow, let alone worn anything yellow but now I cannot wait. Teamed with cool neutrals or plain brown, especially an A line suede skirt or cool cropped jeans, I am pretty sure that my yellow handbag is going to look absolutely fantastic. It will also look totally in place alongside the bold prints and floral patterns that spring fashion heralds this year. I particularly love the trench coat in white, red and yes, yellow jagged shapes, but I have to admit to falling in love (yes, I know I fall in love a lot!) with the yellow trouser suit. Super cool leather and wood clogs are just too good to be true, as is a tuxedo shorts evening suit that I have spied. With so many clothes to choose from, the old adage, “So many clothes, too little time springs to mind but I should not admit to that! However, I will admit to probably not wearing my yellow handbag at the same time as my yellow trouser suit, although I recently heard that matching accessories are back in. Not sure I like that (see issue 4)!

about interiors
A lasting impression
Tucked away in a sheltered corner of Sudbourne Park near Orford is a row of unassuming outbuildings known as Bothy Yard. Originally used to store fruit from the plentiful walled gardens of the old hall, it is now a thriving workshop for a group of local artists called The Sudbourne Park Printmakers. 18
about interiors
The group was founded in the early 1990’s by artist and master printmaker Gareth Jones, who initially ran the workshop from his home but, owing to an expanding membership and the size of the equipment required, relocated it to Bothy Yard in 2002. Inside there are three light and airy rooms with high ceilings, white-washed walls and the original stable block flooring. On the morning I visit I am given a very warm welcome by the artists who are in that day, including Gareth, who is always on hand to offer his expertise, and I am soon whisked away to learn the complicated process of print making. The metal plates are first covered with a thin layer of acid resistant wax ground, onto which you scratch your drawing. This is then dipped into a nitric acid bath where the acid bites into the exposed areas of
the plate and etches your image into the metal. It all seems more like a chemistry lesson than an art class at this stage, and above me shelves are stacked with an assortment of old jars and stained tins containing strange concoctions such as sugar lift and crocus powder; protective masks and googles hang off a rusty nail, and behind me someone fires up the fume extraction unit! Over the next hour I watch as plates are inked with leather covered dabbers that softly work the ink into the finely etched lines. The excess ink is carefully wiped off using a muslin scrim, and layers of tone are built up in blocks using an aquatint box. They have two beautiful old etching presses in this room, one of which dates back to around 1880, and Jan, one of the artists, has a plate ready to press. She 19
about interiors
manually winds her plate through the metal rollers of the press, forcing the ink onto the paper, and then we both hold our breath as it is gently lifted away to reveal her print. It is still a work in progress but I can tell by her smile that she is happy with the result. Chloe then leads me through to the middle room, home to two lavishly embellished presses, a Columbian and an Albion, that are used for a different technique called relief printing. Rollers of varying sizes slick through the brightly coloured paint as she sets up her blocks and, once the parts are assembled, she pulls down the lever and squeezes the design onto the paper. Another successful impression. In the third room, there is a quiet calm as various artists are bent over their work in silent camaraderie. On the walls a variety 20
of prints are on display, and I marvel and the finesse of the touch and richness of the tones that have been achieved. In one corner finished pieces are gathering for their upcoming Easter Exhibition. This features a project called ‘About Bothy Yard’, and the prints are an expression of the surrounding they work in, with inspiration coming from the printing techniques and materials, as well as the statuesque presses themselves. I am full of admiration and also feel that today has touched that raw nerve of creativity that is within all of us, and I make a note to look at the dates of the workshops that Gareth runs, so that I too can get my hands dirty. about the land
As a child nothing quite lifts the spirits and eases your troubles than giving your dog a hug or burying your face in the mane of a velvety nosed pony. These memories stay with us, and sometimes, even as adults, we can still feel that desire. Luckily, at Downham Care Farm, they have a whole menagerie to choose from. Jane Hegarty and Debbie Rawlinson set up the farm back in 2011, only relocating to their new premises in Monk Soham, at the end of last year. Downham is not your average farm and Jane and Debbie are not your average farmers. Having worked with disadvantaged and challenging young adults across both the education and health care sectors for many years, they have witnessed first-hand the benefits of working with animals. The farm offers these vulnerable young people the opportunity to take part in the actual day to day running and management of a traditional working
farm, and to get involved on a very hands on level. The students are expected to literally muck in, and every morning a list of jobs is written up on the board, including cleaning out the animals, making up the feeds and collecting the eggs. Under supervision they work towards achieving certificates under the AQA Unit Award scheme, which recognises all levels of personal progress. It is a brilliant set up and the farm now extends to 15 acres of grazing which has allowed Jane and Debbie to increase the number and variety of animals they can keep. 29
about the land
Jane takes me on a tour and I am delighted to make the acquaintance of a splendid billy goat called Andy and his harem of bleating lady friends; two beautiful young rheas, who try to steal my pen when I am not looking; the majestic Berkshire sows Trixie and Fifi, plus Fifi’s adorable litter of 4 week old piglets; and Millie the ewe, who is already in her lambing pen and looking decidedly portly. But, don’t be fooled by the cute names, this is most definitely a working farm: the goats are being bred for their meat and milk, the piglets will soon grow into weaners that in turn will become sausages for the summer BBQ, and as for Millie’s lambs – I almost dare not ask. Although Jane and Debbie have only been here less than six months, it is clear they have been hard at work, and a poly-tunnel is already up in preparation for planting 30
their own vegetables. They have also converted one of the old pig sheds into a warm and welcoming communal kitchen, where the students can share experiences and get to know each other, and outside a heap of discarded wellies means it must be coffee time. Back outside I wander down to the paddock and watch in amusement as two scruffy Shetlands charge about in the spring sunshine. This feels a happy place, one where the students can be allowed to gain independence and forge friendships. And, if sometimes it does get too much, by taking a cheeky ferret for a turn around the churchyard, watching Fifi’s piglets noisily scoot in and out of the straw, or just giving a bunny a quick hug, the world soon feels a better place. www.downhamcottage.co.uk

Contemporary landscape artist Rob Marrison is a straight talking Yorkshire man. No pretensions. No affectations. No self-importance. Just an honest, no nonsense approach to life and, it would seem, his paintings. I met Rob at his studio in one of the old dairy at Henham Park, where, surrounded by his dramatic artwork, he tells me that he only picked up a paintbrush in 2001. After studying at Harrogate College of Art, he worked for many years as a commercial photographer in London, and then for a while as a prison officer in Doncaster. It was after ‘one incident too many’ at the prison that Rob decided he needed to do something for himself, and so he returned to his creative roots and began to paint. As it turns out he was rather good at it and, when he and his family relocated to Suffolk over twelve years ago, he opened the Studio Gallery in Southwold. This
was a great way to get himself and his work recognised, and he ran the gallery successfully for almost three years, but now confesses to preferring the solitude of working alone in his studio. Rob works mainly in oils, and the tools of his trade are all around us: two large boxes spill over with half squeezed tubes of paint; encrusted palettes tell of last night’s cocktail of ochre, Prussian blue and Payne’s grey, and half-finished paintings sit on splattered easels, whilst on the floor a pile of blank canvasses wait in anticipation. When I ask Rob if there is a particular artist that has inspired him, he gives me a look, “There is only one. Turner of course.” 35
about design
I know the answer before I ask the question, because like Turner, Rob’s powerful landscapes capture the beauty of the changing light, and you can almost see the weather moving in across the marshes. There is a freedom to Rob’s landscapes that I love, and he admits to never working from photographs or sketches; he paints purely from memory, taking inspiration from his walks along the estuaries and coastlines of Suffolk with his faithful terrier Bonnie. “I never plan a piece. If I get the urge I just come here and start putting paint on canvas: with my hands; a knife; straight from the tubes, it doesn’t really matter. It is just important to get some colour down, and from here the painting just evolves.” When he is in this zone the work becomes incredibly absorbing and, apart from Bonnie, his only other companion is music. “I always paint to music, and the type of 36
music I put on will often help to drive a painting; the faster the tempo, the bolder the strokes.” Finished pieces hang around the walls of the studio, already framed and priced, and Rob exhibits at various galleries around the country. Unsurprisingly he sells particularly well in Suffolk, and every year holds an exhibition at the Peter Pears Gallery in Aldeburgh. With hanging space for up to fifty pictures this seems a daunting task, and I am curious as to how he thinks of original titles for all of them. “I don’t. Breaking Waves and Estuary Light are particular favourites. I think I’m on Estuary Light 72 at the moment.” Like I said: No pretensions. No affectations. No self-importance. about gardens
In whatever way you notice the arrival of spring – the white nod of snowdrops, the chase and trill of birds – none of us can miss the sense of anticipation that sweeps in with March. The tangible tingle in the air. Grass grows, buds burst, and all in nature stirs. With the gloom of winter behind us, and the sour scent of yellow on the wind, in spring we find a natural need for change. Where January had us plodding, March adds a spring to our step. We seem to lift and shift with the light. We renew our homes with a good spring-clean and allow for growth as we plan the year ahead. What we hide from in winter, we seek out in spring.
hidden roots seek sun. Cautious of a nip of frost, gardens will take their time. But soon enough life peeks from bulbs we’d long forgotten – tulips and primulas, crocuses and daffs; and as colours clamour against the bare brown earth, spring reminds us what it is to blossom, what comes when plants seek light. Each day we notice something different, however slight the change. A bigger bud, a greener hope. And the most incredible thing is knowing there’s no hiding from it. That no matter how low the clouds or thick the snow of winter, the joy of spring will always follow. It’s Mother Nature’s way; mums usually know best.
And somehow our gardens mirror us (or we reflect them). As the soil begins to warm and spread, tender shoots from 39
about gardens
Spring into action Spring: an active verb; a time of year. Spring starts in March. A march is a purposeful stride. For gardening at this time of year, the instructions are already there. There’s no time to waste. Unless you’re careful, spring will have sprung and you’ll have missed your chance to get on top of your garden before it gets on top of you. Start your outdoor spring-clean as early as possible to get those beds ready for their guests. Spend time digging, weeding and mulching. Tidy borders and cut any dead stems you didn’t get to in autumn. Divide snowdrops (they make gorgeous presents potted up). Separate and re-plant overcrowded perennials. Clean the patio or decking. Prepare soil for veggies.
Tales from the potting shed 40
And when you’re done with the horticultural administration, take on the ultimate – the first cut! Top the lawn with shears and rake up. When you’re ready to mow, keep blades high to avoid bald patches. Don’t forget to keep an eye on the weather. Once we’re into April and the sun’s on our backs, it’s easy to become complacent; stay frost-vigilant and avoid planting tender bedding or patio flowers too soon. Whilst spring is a busy time in the garden, be sure to make time to stand and stare. You’ll be glad you did. Sarah-Jane Page

about food
No longer needing to hide behind the woolly shirt tails of its younger counterparts, Mutton is experiencing a renaissance that promises to return it to its rightful place on British menus, and Jason Gathorne-Hardy of Alde Valley Lamb will be there every step of the way. Jason and his family have been farming in the beautiful Upper Alde Valley for over fifty years, and at White House Farm, Great Glemham his flock of about 120 ewes are allowed to roam freely over 140 acres of historic water meadows, parkland and ancient woodland. The flock has been managed by brothers, Roger and Nick Watts, and Nick’s wife Penny since 2001, and with the help of their trained eye and years of experience, Alde Valley Lamb has become widely recognised for its exceptional quality and flavour. However, it was the delights of Alde Valley Mutton that was being served up at a
recent farm supper, hosted by Jason in the candle-lit dining rooms of White House Farm. Prepared and cooked by local chef Peter Harrison it was a revelation: full of texture and flavour, with a slight underlying sweetness, and we were all unanimous in our praise. And we were in good company that night, as the guest speakers were Gerard King from Salter & King Butchers, who has already hosted his own Mutton Week in Aldeburgh, plus Bob Kennard and his wife, the author of the aptly named ‘Much Ado About Mutton’, who is championing this campaign to a much wider audience. 43
about food
Jason himself is delighted at the current revival and hopes that by raising the profile of this much maligned meat and working together with local suppliers, he will be able to send away up to thirty ewes for mutton next year. Farming sustainably, in harmony with the natural eco-systems and habitats is hugely important to Jason. White House Farm is part of a Higher Level Stewardship scheme, and working alongside Natural England, hedgerows have been restored, wildflower headlands carefully sown by hand, and a series of educational nature walks created for use by local schools. Jason believes that it is important to connect people with the working countryside that surrounds them, and this is why for the last twelve years the farm has also been the home of a seasonal art exhibition, and the Alde Valley Spring Festival. 44
This four week festival is a celebration of food, farming and also, importantly, the arts, because as well as being a landowner, Jason is also a widely renowned artist. White House Farm is the perfect location for the festival and during this time it comes alive with creativity: barns are swept and cleared to make room for a wonderful display of drawings, sculpture and paintings, stables become pop-up cafĂŠs and patisseries, and the farmhouse throws open its doors to welcome diners to a series of Farm Suppers. It is definitely one for the diary and I look forward to returning next month, but right now I am off the butchers to buy some mutton for supper! www.aldevalleylamb.co.uk Alde Valley Lamb and Mutton is available from the farmcafĂŠ farm shop at Marlesford and Salter & King Butchers in Aldeburgh Spring Festival: 18th April to 17th May www.aldevalleyspringfestival.co.uk

a champagne break for two at Thorpeness Golf Club & Hotel worth £200
Thorpeness is home to a James Braid designed heathland course, a stone’s throw from the Suffolk Heritage Coast in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The former fishing hamlet was transformed into a holiday village in 1910 and has a boating lake known locally as the “Thorpeness Meare” , a windmill and the curious ‘House in the Clouds’ (a converted water tower hovering 70-feet above the tree tops). There are few places in British golf where you can walk from your hotel bedroom to the first tee in under a minute. The 36-bedroom golf hotel at Thorpeness Golf Club is situated right behind the third tee and adjacent to the opening hole. For more information see www.thorpeness.co.uk

Loaves and fishes and sweet childhood memories What’s cooking at Sir Robert Hitchams? Well, a brand new and totally amazing curriculum kitchen, that’s what! Launched back in January, the weekly Cookery Club was oversubscribed three times over within one day of sending the letters home. Now, the school is joining forces with the afterschool Gardening Club, and has also joined Jamie’s Kitchen Garden scheme, creating an exciting and hopefully more ambitious cookery programme with its new resources.

Slow cooked to perfection, a Moroccan style tagine is spicy, fragrant and full of flavour. This recipe from local chef Peter Harrison is slow cooked to allow the full flavour of the wonderful spices and mutton to develop. No need to use a tagine, a large saucepan will do.
Moroccan Mutton Tagine Ingredients 1.5kg diced mutton For the marinade 4tbsp olive oil 1tbsp sea salt, ground cumin and ground cinnamon Ground black pepper ½tbsp ground coriander and ground all spice ¼tbsp cayenne pepper 4 cloves garlic, crushed 1 peeled and grated thumb ginger Zest & juice of 2 lemons 50
For the cooking liquor 2tbsp olive oil 4 medium white onions, chopped 1tbsp ground cumin ½tbsp ground coriander and ground cinnamon ½tsp saffron threads 1 orange cut into 3 1 tbsp runny honey 2 x 500g packets passata Salt & pepper
Directions First for the marinade – combine all of the ingredients and mix well. Add the diced mutton, cover and ideally leave overnight in the fridge. The following day warm a large heavy bottomed saucepan and seal the mutton on a high heat. Once browned remove and leave to rest. Drain any excess fat from the saucepan and now make the cooking liquor. Add the olive oil to the pan and sweat the onions until translucent. Add the ground coriander, cumin and cinnamon and continue to cook out the spices for a couple of minutes. Add the passata, honey, orange pieces, saffron and bring to a simmer for 10 minutes on a low heat. Return the meat and leave to simmer for 1½ hours, stirring occasionally. If it appears to become too thick, add a little water and towards the end add a few dried apricots, prunes or even quince. Serve with couscous and freshly chopped almonds. www.peterharrisonchef.co.uk

round & about
Woods, warrens and waves It is a cold bright morning in February, and we, the full aboutfram team, are assembled at the Coastguard Cottages on Dunwich Heath to stretch our legs over a five mile walk that encircles the RSPB Minsmere Reserve, and rather conveniently has the Eel’s Foot Inn as its half-way house. With the North Sea sparkling in the sunlight and a gentle purple haze lingering over the marshes we set off in a relatively orderly fashion; well as orderly as you can be with four dogs, five kids and a binoculared twitcher in tow. We drop down towards to the beach and then take a path to the right that leads past a small dipping pond. Only two minutes in and this is our first stopping point as coats and hats are discarded, the dogs take a 54
drink, and a dragon fly larva wiggling its way frantically through the brackish water demands identification. We then follow the footpath as it meanders along the edge of a stream that marks the edge of the reserve, and on the other side, we soon lose our four-legged friends in amongst the golden bracken and silver birch trees. At the first Dunwich Heath sign we go left through the gate and wander past banks of heather and then into a beautiful mixed wood. By now we have the walk to ourselves and pause momentarily to listen to the sound of a busy woodpecker, whilst in the distance we can hear the reassuring cries of the kids playing capture the flag. We re-group where the path crosses the road that leads down to Minsmere, and
round & about
then carry on across open grassland where the dogs are taunted by the sight of multitudes of nonchalant rabbits safely grazing on the other side of the fence. By now the boys have got their ‘beer legs’ on and set the pace towards The Eel’s Foot Inn at Eastbridge. Although they don’t take bookings at the pub, by the time we have warmed up by the wood-burner and ordered drinks, it’s not too long before we are tucking into their delicious homecooked fayre; dishes such as ham, egg and chips, fish and chips, and a comfortingly satisfying lasagne. We reluctantly drag ourselves away from this genuine old pub before we can settle to a third pint and the pull of the pudding menu, and hit the road refreshed. Just past the pub we go left at a sign marked Minsmere Sluice, and then fork
right down a small track and set our sights on the coastal ridge ahead. The meadows soon give way to marshland, and if you are lucky you might spot a marsh harrier hunting over the reed beds that form part of the reserve. By now the sun is slowly gliding down behind us, and overhead squadrons of grey legged geese are returning to the inland reservoirs for the night. The kids and dogs have slowed up a little and we seem to be playing an inverse game of Grandmother’s Footsteps; every time we turn round they seem to be further away! However once the Coastguard Cottages come into sight and they get a whiff of the sea air, they are soon racing down the shingle to leap out of the way of the crashing waves, and we all yomp back along the beach, windswept, replete and ruddy cheeked. 55
