A View From The Club With the summer season winding down, we wanted to share with you the exciting improvements that were accomplished through the Capital Enhancement program that was adopted in November 2014. In its first year this program generated $160,187. Entering the 2015 fiscal year, we started with a Capital Expenditures budget of $217,300 leaving $57,113 to be made up through Club operations and seeking opportunities to complete these projects under budget. This year’s Capital Enhancement Plan called for four main projects: The first project completed was replacing the batteries for the entire golf car fleet. The original budget for this project called for an expense of $40,600. We are pleased to say that through the continued efforts of our staff and vendor, this project was completed for $32,480. We also completed a sizeable pool repair project which entailed replacing all of the skimmers, repairing cracked steps and pool floor, and repainting the pool. Replacing two additional skimmers and more extensive tile repair pushed the final expense for this project beyond our initial budget of $70,000 to a final cost of $71,253. In addition, we further enhanced the look and feel of our Pool complex by replacing all of the furniture surrounding the pool which had last been updated in 1994. Our initial estimate for the furniture replacement was $67,000. By utilizing the purchasing power available to SCC, we were able to replace 80 chaise lounges, 16 dining tables, 64 dining chairs, and 16 umbrellas/bases for a total expense of $56,288. Our final project was the installation of two new irrigation wells to support the maintenance needs of the golf course. Prior to this project, the SCC golf course water supply had been diminished to just one usable well, which created the definite need for back-up water supply alternatives. The initial budget for this project was estimated at $30,000. We are happy to report that both wells have been dug, and with just one left to be tied in with our irrigation system, the expectation is for this project to be completed within budget. In total, with savings also recognized in smaller projects, we have been able to complete this year’s capital projects for a total expense of $191,500. As stated when the Capital Enhancement program was adopted by the membership, 100% of the Capital Enhancement funds contributed by members were spent only on Capital projects. During the next fiscal year we are expecting to again utilize the funds generated through the Capital Enhancement program to further enhance your membership experience by restoring and improving our club. Some of the projects being considered for the upcoming year include: parking lot repaving, indoor driving range/simulator, kitchen equipment replacement/upgrades to name a few. We graciously thank you for your support of this program.

Mike’s Minute Fairway Conversion Update To complete the fairway conversion the zoysia nursery had to be "pushed" to produce enough quality sod to supply the remaining fairways. Due to declining production from the irrigation wells which, the nursery had not been maintained for production for the past few years. Last fall, new wells were installed, boosting water production that will allow for increased care of the nursery. With water levels restored, we then needed to resume fertilizer, herbicide, and fungicide applications which had previously been forgone. To accomplish this the funding was reallocated from the monies normally used to overseed these fairways in the fall. As has been mentioned in previous letters, these four fairways were only overseeded each year because they had not been converted to zoysia. Because the intention was to resod these areas anyway, there was no need to overseed them this year and we were able to reallocate the monies that would have been spent on overseeding to support restoration of the zoyisa nursery. This plan was shared with the Golf Committee last fall along with the info that there could be some areas in the bermuda that might suffer some winter injury leaving a poor playing surface in the Spring. As mentioned, there are some areas that are effected more than others and they will be sodded yet this spring as the seasonal golf course staff is hired/returns. Our plan is to use the same removal/resod program that has proven successful many times over the years. Dependent upon weather, we will begin with bi-weekly chemical control applications starting in late July through the first killing frost along with specific maintenance practices to encourage better uptake of the control chemicals into the plants. This will result in the control of the Bermuda and to help keep it out of the new sod. We will then begin the removal of the treated sod, correction of any drainage issues and make any desired contour/edge changes. After this is completed we will begin the installation of the new zoysia sod from the nursery in late January to early February. With ideal weather we can install approximately 1 acre/day so the replacement should be fairly timely with the fairways ready to go by springtime. The greens aerification is scheduled for the 14th & 15th of the month. The same proven methods will be used this fall to help them remain some of the the finest around with every effort in place to return them to those condition as quickly as possible. Thank you for your support and understanding. Mike
