place of worship. So began the idea of building a church out of aluminium with a fabric cover. It was essential that the construction of the church should be quick, easy and cheap and therefore something similar to a tent was thought to suit these features perfectly. The architectural firm Coello from Portugal contacted MoĂąita-Tectum from Spain and challenged them to find a solution.

Another important point to take into consideration was the joint of both naves. The joint had to be conceived with a fabric element, which can only be pulled into shape by stress at its edges, and which is unable to settle into a shape or allow its adaptation to the shape needed. The solution was to apply tension on the main diagonals keeping all the other edges fixed, achieving uniform tension across the fabric.

Structure The initial approach is the classic organization of a church with a Latin cross plan, consisting of a structure, 26m long and 7.30m wide, and another one of 21m long using a new building system of modular aluminium structures. With regards to the structural level the project would prove to be a great challenge. Given that these kind of structures are thin, a change in the way of thinking about the design of aluminium structures was needed. Internal reinforcements were placed within the structure in order to counteract buckling on the side pillars.

Fabric The cover was made of polyester fabric and PVC coated white. The translucency of the membrane gives the interior of the church an interesting, warm, light atmosphere. A band of micro-perforated fabric was placed in the top of each cover, which allows inner ventilation, and reduces the condensation inside the space. In both spaces the fabric was fixed on the aluminum profile, stretched at the ends by longitudinal steel tubes. On the facades, the tension system is quite similar, using the cross-shaped structure as a block, this block
