s a young architect in London, Ben Morris the co-founder of VectorFoiltec, was deeply influenced by the teachings of Buckminster Fuller and the idea of building “more with less” and the principles of material efficiency and sustainability. It was not until he met Stefan Lehnert, the German engineer who invented a welding technology for the Texlon® ETFE (ethylene – tetra – fluoro – ethylene) system, that he was able to apply these ideas to architecture, design and engineering contributing to the successful adoption of ETFE as a sustainable building material. Even now, thirty years later, Ben Morris is still passionate about these topics, and this is reflected in the company’s mission statement: “our goal is to provide exceptional service by delivering intelligent solutions of long term sustainable value”. ETFE has undoubtedly transformed the architectural industry over the past 30 years. Many iconic buildings such as the Khan Shatyr Entertainment Centre, the National Aquatic Centre and Forsyth Barr Stadium, the first stadium in the

in complimentary technologies such as printing and smoke venting. Through our extensive R&D we believe that we are the leaders in applying the existing technology and adapting the material for new applications such as pre-stressed single membranes.

Texlon® ETFE is obtained from the natural mineral fluorspar. ETFE resin is extruded into roll form ranging from 100µm - 250µm for architectural applications.

The rolls of foil are cut to the desired shape and are welded together to form cushions. ETFE cushions combine exceptional light transmission with high insulation and tear resistance making it an ideal building material. “Texlon® ETFE foils have been exposed to both natural and artificial weathering conditions for more than 30 years without suffering any significant changes”. It is inherently UV stable and transparent to UV radiation and does not require any additional chemical additives. It can withstand cold temperatures of -160°C. It also has an exceptionally low coefficient of friction so it is essentially self-cleaning when it rains.

ETFE cushions or ‘climatic envelopes’ consist of between two – five layers of ETFE foils that are pneumatically pre-stressed to create cladding for structures. The pneumatic pre-tensioning with a low

El Texlon® ETFE se obtiene del mineral natural espato flúor. La resina de ETFE se extrude para formar rollos de entre 100 µm y 250 µm destinados a aplicaciones arquitectónicas. Los rollos se cortan según el tamaño deseado y se sueldan para formar almohadillas.

The cushions are inflated with low-pressure air to provide thermal insulation and resist wind loads.

The engineering of Texlon® ETFE is a highly specialist area. Vector Foiltec provide a full engineering and patterning service, including bespoke non-linear load analysis and patterning software.

The material’s extremely light weight combined with its high strength allows for infinite variations of the contours. In comparison to structural glazing, foil cushions allow larger spans as they can be patterned into virtually any shape and reduce the overall load on a supporting structure allowing for optimization of the members.

ETFE cushions are analysed using the membrane theory to assess the optimal span for the cushions.

Long flat cushions with a ratio of length to width l/w > 2 are spanning over the short span and can be calculated using a simplified two-dimensional analysis method. Three-dimensional considerations according to the finite element method are required to give more accurate results in view of the load-bearing behaviour of the cushions. The cushions are made to suit the exact dimensions of the contour. They are patterned to allow for an initial rise and dip between the upper and lower foils. After installation they are subjected to an internal pressure of typically 200 Pa, which pre-stresses and elongates the foils to give the cushions their basic shape.

Cushions spanning up to 4.0m wide, that incorporate a sufficient slope, are possible without the need for reinforcement cables, depending on certain parameters and situations; the length of the cushion can easily be in excess of 20m or 30m. “As opposed to glass, curvatures, deformations and warpages are easily achieved with Texlon® ETFE cushions”. Square, polygonal or round cushions with biaxial stress distribution allow larger spans. Even for these forms, it is advisable to incorporate a slight slope in the arrangement of the cushions.

In recent years there has been a shift towards prestressed single membrane Texlon® ETFE on projects that do not have any thermal requirements. Vector Foiltec employed a pre-stressed single membrane for the façade of the Unilever HQ in Hamburg.

Las almohadillas se fabrican para que se correspondan con las dimensiones exactas del contorno. Se modelan de forma que admitan una tolerancia inicial entre las láminas superior e inferior. Una vez instaladas, se someten a una presión interna normalmente de 200 Pa, que pretensiona y estira las láminas para que las almohadillas adquieran su forma básica.

Careful consideration to detailing and engineering is paramount because ETFE is a more flexible and expandable material than a PTFE fabric membranes.

As with other membranes pre-stressed single ETFE membranes require additional arches or tensile supports to achieve the double-curved geometry necessary for structural stability. The maximum spans are limited to 2.0m in width in most load scenarios (compared to 4 to 5 m with an inflated Texlon® ETFE cushion). Furthermore, it is imperative that the ETFE single membrane has sufficient bi-lateral tensioning within its plane to help resist the anticipated loads and deter wrinkles. This usually leads to extra steelwork being employed.

The main issues with pre-stressed single membrane ETFE are resisting uplift and snow/wind loads and it is necessary to set cables in sleeve pockets above and below the ETFE foil to resist these loads. These cables have to be well detailed to prevent water ingress and the development of unsightly algae patches in the sleeve pockets. In addition the cables require regular post-tensioning to prevent creep to be considered fit for purpose and this should be incorporated into any maintenance regime.

Vector Foiltec’s Texlon® ETFE is redefining conventional Alpine construction with the application of a single foil membrane to the Grasjoch-Hochalpila Interchange Station. In a region renowned for its heavy snow loads (up to 380 kg/m²) and wind-peak speeds of 200 km/h, Vector Foiltec is setting the standard in single foil membrane technology.

Connecting the villages of St. Gallenkirch and Schruns in the Montafon Valley of the Austrian Alps, the interchange station forms the longest cable-car system in Europe, at an estimated 4,343 m. The L-shaped, flat roofed design of the station, unobtrusively blends into the surrounding landscape.

This project, comprised of 2,435 m² of transparent Texlon® ETFE foil, underwent extensive testing to determine the feasibility of single foil membrane technology in such a challenging environment.

Affording permanent protection against all weather conditions, and offering spectacular views of the surrounding Vorarlberg slopes, the project’s success is a culmination of innovative design and Vector Foiltec’s 30 years of ‘solution-finding’ expertise.

Vector Foiltec was the first company to print patterns on ETFE foils to reduce solar gain. Now it has developed a new generation of patented lacquers

Como otras membranas pretensionadas, las membranas únicas de ETFE requieren arcos o soportes de tracción adicionales para tener la geometría de doble curvatura necesaria para la estabilidad estructural. En la mayoría de las combinaciones de carga, las luces máximas se limitan a una anchura de 2,0 m (frente a los 4-5 m de una almohadilla de Texlon® ETFE inflada). Además, es necesario que la membrana única de Texlon® ETFE tenga suficiente tensión bilateral en su plano para ayudarla a resistir las cargas previstas y evitar las arrugas. Por lo general, esto lleva a utilizar más construcción metálica.

El reto principal del ETFE de membrana única pretensionada es aguantar las subpresiones y las cargas de la nieve o del viento, por lo que deben instalarse cables en ranuras, por encima y por debajo de la lámina de ETFE, para que resista. Estos cables han de estar bien diseñados, para impedir que entre agua y aparezcan manchas antiestéticas de algas en ranuras. Además, los cables deben postensarse periódicamente, para evitar deformaciones inadecuadas; todo régimen de mantenimiento deberá incorporar esta medida.

El Texlon® ETFE de Vector Foiltec está redefiniendo la construcción en alta montaña convencional, con la aplicación de una membrana de lámina única en la estación de intercambio de Grasjoch-Hochalpila. ticular requirements for any given project. The unique MediaTIC façade in Barcelona is the perfect example of a successful partnership. The total building volume forms a cube of 44m x 44m x 37.82m high. It utilised Vector Foiltec’sTexlon® ETFE to facilitate eco-efficiency in cutting-edge design.

MediaTIC uses 2,500m² of intelligent Texlon® ETFE cladding on both the South East and South West facades. The individually climatic controlled ETFE cushions of the East façade receive an average of six hours of sunshine a day and use Vector Foiltec’s Texlon®Vario system to optimise solar gain in any climate - opening in winter to increase solar energy gain and closing in summer to reflect heat.

The decision to cover the roof of the world’s first permanently enclosed stadium with a natural turf pitch at Forsyth Barr Stadium with Texlon® ETFE is set to revolutionize the stadia industry. Vector Foiltec is currently in contract to install four additional stadia on three continents. The Texlon® ETFE system can easily be adapted by means of inexpensive lighting equipment to create stunning media façades or branding opportunities.

In 2011 following almost two years data collection and third party evaluation, Vector Foiltec received an EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) for the Texlon® ETFE system. “Vector Foiltec is the only ETFE company in the world to have a valid EPD”. Texlon®’s low levels of embodied energy and outstanding environmental benefits such as the reduction in artificial lighting required in a building and the substantial reduction of supporting structure and speed of installation compared to a similar glazed system result in an ecologically benign climatic envelope. Texlon®’s efficiency and lightness allow the creation of cladding envelopes that use less than 1% of the embodied energy of comparable technologies for a better environmental performance. Furthermore,
