m e m o r a n d u m To: The Smart, Stylish and Sophisticated JAYE Readers From: Michael Jones, JAYE Editor-in-Chief Date: January 2011 Subject: A Glimpse Into Your Future My intrepid editors have an sixth sense that compels them to dig stories out of places where even I didn’t know they existed to begin with. And because of their fearlessness, the part of the production cycle that I enjoy the most is when we brainstorm ideas for future issues. So imagine the euphoria that ensued when Brianti Downing, one of my deputy editors, volunteered to write a story detailing the results of a visit to a local psychic. Explains Brianti in her initial pitch, “I think since we’re exploring the idea of the future with a new year, I can see what mine may hold.” Suffice it to say, I think she was surprised at what said future holds for her, according to her clairvoyant. Read Brianti’s chronicles on p. 80. Never to be outdone, I thought I’d foray into the fortune-telling field and forecast how this issue, our first of the new year, will help you experience a more stylish, healthier and happier 2011: Prediction: You’ll discover new ways to wear the latest trends without becoming a fashion victim. How we’ve helped: Starting with our Shopper section on p. 35, we’ve curated the Resort trends and bundled them in an energetic package, inspired by some of our favorite destinations. My favorite? The punchy, bright colors--inspired by Stefano Pilati’s Yves Saint Laurent cruise collection--perfect for evening strolls through San Diego. It doesn’t stop there: On p. 92, we’ve compiled a detailed trend report on seven must-wear ideas that’ll tide you over until spring. Speaking of, we’ve also highlighted ten concepts from 6 JAnuary 2011 jaye.com
the Spring 2011 shows that inform the new season, which we’ll begin covering in next month’s issue. Prediction: Until then, you’ll stave off the shivery cold in style. How we’ve helped: We’ve got a succinct boot guide on p. 10 that catalogs the best styles of the season--and all but two pair are under $100! Plus in this month’s Cheat Sheet, you’ll find a comprehensive breakdown of the chicest coats that pull double duty: They’ll keep you warm and on trend! Prediction: You will focus on your overall health, and not just losing those last five pounds. How we’ve helped: Who better to dish out fitness facts than the experts who work in the field everyday? That’s why we’re grateful to Harvey Walden, a United States Marine, judge on VH1’s popular series Celebrity Fit Club; Rory Freedman, co-authors of Skinny Bitch, a New York Times besteller; and Daphne Oz, who’s father Mehmet, is one of the most respected doctors today, who have given you the 411 on how to live healthier lives with a few lifestyle changes (p. 70). Also, you’ll love Senior Editor Chloe Metzger’s look (p. 76) into who or what’s to blame for our inability to succumb to the pressure of keeping our resolutions.
shared their secrets and I’m sure their tips will serve you (and your beauty regimen!) well. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg! Each page in this issue is packed with news, advice and recommendations delivered in our trademark smart, stylish and sophisticated tone. So get to reading, and when you finish, e-mail me at jayemagmike@gmail.com and let me know what you think. In the meantime, Happy New Year and have a ball reading the issue!
MJ
Prediction: You will implement new beauty strategies that are easy to apply and proven to work. How we’ve helped: In Glam, starting on p. 53, we spoke to three women who speak your mind! Whether you’re complimenting us, or calling us out, we want your feedback! We reply to all of your notes, so let us know what you think!

uring the dull winter months when we are knee-deep in our fall wardrobes and not yet thinking ahead to spring, resort collections restore the excitement of fresh fashion in our lives. But why do we have them? Most people marvel in their beauty but are unsure of their purpose and how to work the pieces into their wardrobe during the cold weather they debut in. Resort collections, sometimes called cruise, were originally targeted toward wealthier women who took vacations to warmer climates during the winter. The sets served as sources of new fashion for those cruising to toasty destinations like the Mediterranean. Today, these collections are a way for fashion lovers who have already bought their fall wardrobe to start looking ahead to all-important spring trends and purchasing key pieces for vacations that may come during cold weather. They also are a chance for designers to stage more intimate studio presentations, as opposed to traditional runway spectacles. For resort, my personal favorite was Miu Miu. The mixed patterns, pops of color, and armfuls of bangles composed an almost fantasy-like candy land. Models slouched in pairs donning wide-leg polka-dot pants and apple-printed dresses. The pops of green and neon pink appeared in the form of oversized heart brooches and scarves gave the collection a fearless feeling. Want to try the mixed prints from Miu Miu in your winter wardrobe? Pair striped maxi skirts and striped long-sleeved sweaters in like colors or try a printed wide leg pant in a dark color! You’ll be looking to the bright beginnings of spring fashion in no time. ■

JAYE IN THE KNOW Are Good Girls a Dying Breed?
to think that something was wrong with her, or she wasn’t desirable enough. Some of the most popular women in today’s society have risen to fame for either sleeping with or being romantically linked to a male celebrity. This puts the GG idea of respecting herself and being smart on the backburner. The GG image isn’t being forced upon us. Even with First Lady Michelle Obama in the White House, and all the praise she gets for her tastefully stylish outfits, ability to seamlessly juggle the proverbial work-life balance with ease, while doing it
ties. Women that are running their own businesses and giving back to their communities aren’t getting half as much exposure, and have to work harder to get noticed. It’s no secret that sex sells, but if that’s all you’re able to sell, then something needs to change. GGs are seen as the marrying type, but are often ignored when a guy just wants to date around instead of looking for something serious. However, all is not lost for GGs: Even though they sometimes may not get recognition, they are needed
ecently, while on Twitter, a male tweeted, “Good girls haven’t been winning since the ‘50s,” which caused me to ask myself: Could what he’s saying be true? Do men really not want good girls? And what exactly defines a woman as being a “good girl?” I’ve been to countless college seminars where being a GG was defined as a woman respecting herself, meaning that she wasn’t promiscuous; someone who was focused on school and motivates herself and those around her. Many guys have expressed wanting a GG or a wellrespected woman as the type they would want to marry or settle down with. Those with sophistication and grace, GGs aren’t getting half as much attention as the qualities may hold true, but I can’t help women who earned but wonder, are these types of girls their fame using that get a male’s attenuys a g e k ta y a m t “I tion first, and what they eir life their bodies, and desire when they are in certain time in thte what not their minds. the dating phase of their to fully apprecia er, but Self-proclaimed life? the GG has to offrth it.” groupies are now getting paid thou Many young women in the end it’s wo sands of dollars have evinced that they to host parties at clubs around have been referred to by the country, and are being interviewed in males as girlfriend material or the marmajor consumer magazines where they rying type, but those same males didn’t discuss why they want to expose celebripursue a relationship, causing the female

Males know that the GG are the ones that are the right for them, but sometimes aren’t ready to settle down with them until they’ve “sowed their wild oats,” so to speak. GGs aren’t a dying breed, just a little unappreciated. It may take some guys awhile to want to be with you, but in the end, holding your breath for the right one to come around will pay off. – Brittney Fennell

Kid Cudi and Kanye West
See No Strings Attached Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman star in a film that entertainingly tries to figure out the age-old question: Do friends-with-benefits relationships work? While it’s child’s play in the beginning, once feelings get caught, they soon realize it’s easier said than done. Check it out on January 21. standards. FYI: Gwyneth Paltrow lead an entertaining rendtion of the song during her guest spot on Fox’s Glee in November. ■ “Peacock,” Katy Perry. Another risqué song from Katy Perry: This is a flirty, fun, sing-along song about a man’s, uh, manhood. ■ “Take Over Control,” Afrojack ft. Eva Simons. “Take Over Control” is a love song about the ecstasy between two people. It’s a house song but has enough lyrics in it for those who have not yet fallen in love with the genre.
■ “Erase Me,” Kid Cudi Featuring Kanye West. Play this song, about a woman who wants to leave a man she knows is bad for her, but can’t end their relationship, while dressing up for a night out with the girls. ■ “Fuck You,” Cee-Lo Green. Scene Change
Some TV characters are forgettable, while others stick in our minds. We have five television characters you should aspire to be like in the New Year
The Voice of Reason, Joan Collins: When everyone’s had one too many Cosmos, it probably seems like a great idea to do some not-so-great things, so there’s needs to be someone there to talk some sense into you. On the series Girlfriends (think Sex and the City for network television) Joan was that voice for her three friends as they navigated their way through the difficulties of careers and finding meaningful romances. The Comic Relief, Carrie Bradshaw: Besides having killer style , Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw is best-known for her humor. She brought wit to the show and to the lives of her three best friends. When things get a little heavy, like when your first tests start to roll around, it’s nice to have a friend who can make you laugh when you’re feeling low. If that’s not hardcore, then what is? The Outcast, Liz Lemon: There’s a reason Glee is so popular — most of us were outcasts in high school. The ultimate black sheep seems to be 30 Rock’s Liz Lemon, head writer of the fictional sketch comedy program entitled, The Girly Show with Tracy Jordan. Lemon’s comfortable with the fact that she’ll never fit in because she was born to stand out. The Career Woman, Dr. Lisa Cuddy: Any woman who can put up with Dr. House had to be on this list. On Fox’s House, Cuddy worked her way up and it’s obvious she isn’t backing down anytime soon, even if the two have started a romantic relationship. – B.D.
Loko About Four Loko! The Food and Drug Administration announced its plans to ban the alcoholic energy drink Four Loko, citing the opinions of health experts who believe large consumption of the popular beverage, which reportedly contains as much caffeine as a cup of coffee, and has enough alcohol to equal four or five beers, puts consumers at risk for alcohol poisoning or even death. We asked Dara Adeeyo, a senior at Hofstra University and a former JAYE staffer, her opinions on the issue,: “Banning the drink won’t stop teens from not responsibly drinking. It’s like banning cigarettes: we know smoking is bad, but if it were to be banned that would seem, for the lack of a better term, stupid.” She continues, “I don’t agree on the ban of Four Loko because alcohol is legal, but I understand that it has an appeal to a younger audience. I don’t personally drink Four Loko. I think it tastes disgusting, but if it takes some genius to create a concotion that apeals to youth to shine a light on the whole young drinking problem, then that’s a damn shame.” What do you think? The Good, The Bad and the Unfortunate
Some great books become good movies, while other titles are turned into films that barely resembled their printed counterpart. Here, a list of the five best and worst paperback-to-bigscreen translation
■ Good Books Made Into Bad Movies: 1. The Hitchhikers’ Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. The Hitchhiker novels play with elements of context and rhythm that don’t translate well on film. The novels are mainly seen as comedic and verge into the past, present and future, while the 2005 film seemed to struggle with trying too hard to be wacky. An added ending was tacked onto the film for unrealistic closure to an open-ended story. 2. The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Neffinger. Even though the film stars great actors, like Rachel McAdams (The Notebook) and Eric Bana (Troy), the audience is forced to think too hard to understand how the relationship worked. Simply put, read the book and skip the movie. 3. Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates. Yates’ first novel, tells the story of the Wheelers, a couple in the 1950s played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, who are tired of the status quo that suburban life in Connecticut brings. The film doesn’t seem to connect to the tonal shifts that are featured in the book, which was published in 1961. Instead, the movie tells the plot of the book which consists of false hope, a move to Paris to escape, and an unwanted pregnancy. 4. Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. Yes, even though the Twilight series has legions of fans and was seen worldwide, the movie for some reason just
16 JANUARY 2011 jaye.com
didn’t capture the spirit of the book. The overly dramatic seizure that Edward Cullen, played by British heartthrob Robert Pattinson, suffers when Bella, played by Kristen Stewart, sits next to him in biology class is more reminiscent of someone choking with food caught in their throat. Let’s not forget the unnecessary shirtless scenes of Jacob, played by Taylor Lautner. We can all agree that Lautner has great abs, but he must have at least one shirt. 5. Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Theodor “Dr. Seuss” Geisel. This book has been a classic read for generations. Sadly, we can’t say the same for its film adaptation. The film, made in 2000, starred Jim Carrey as the Grinch and ditched many of the classic rhymes. The over-embellished design of the book turned into a color and noise nightmare in the film adaptation. The Grinch may have stolen Christmas, but he didn’t steal our hearts with this one. ■ Good Books Made Into Good Movies: 1. Waiting to Exhale by Terry McMillan. You may have to be in college to appreciate the film and novel Waiting to Exhale, which told the story of four best friends in Phoenix, who were in different stages of their love lives. A girl could find a little bit of herself in the characters Bernadine, Savannah, Robin, and Gloria. Think Sex and the City with less laughs and more tears. In an iconic scene, Bernadine stuffs her ex-husband’s expensive wardrobe into a car and sets the whole thing on fire. And did we mention a soundtrack with songs by Whitney Houston and Mary J. Blige?

2. Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares. The story of a pair of jeans and four friends was never told so well in a novel or on-screen. The fact that a pair of magical jeans could fit all four friends with different body types may not be believable to some, but the movie captures it well. This film proved to be the breakout roles for a pre-Gossip Girl Blake Lively and a pre-Ugly Betty America Ferrara. The lives and summers of Tibby, Lena, Carmen and Bridget are well executed on screen, and each actress fits the description, attitude, and background of her respected character. 3. Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling. What makes the Harry Potter franchise so successful is that the film follows the book down to the dialogue and setting descriptions, which in turn makes fans show up at the movie theaters. One could read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone while watching the film without missing a beat. It also helps that Daniel Radcliffe holds a striking resemblance to his character Harry. 4. Lord of the Rings Trilogy by J.R.R.

Tolkien. Elijah Wood will always be remembered as everyone’s favorite hobbit, Frodo. The trilogy translated so well on screen because the characters were believable, along with the film’s set. Aside from fans being happy with the cast, the script read like the book and the descriptions of the Middle Earth setting were followed well. The film’s director Peter Jackson won nine Academy Awards for the trilogy. 5. Bridget Jones’s Diary by Helen Fielding. One of Renee Zellwegger’s most famous roles, is a fictional column-turnednovel that chronicles the life of a woman in her thirties living in London, who writes in diary form about her career, self-image, vices, family, friends and romantic relationships. The Bridget Jones series has been widely successful, and Zellwegger has shown to be believable, even packing on 30 pounds to play Bridget. – B.F.

Sex Q&A JAYE Correspondent and Resident Nookie Know-It-All Talia Cadet addresses your sexual anxieties each month Q: I already knew that my boyfriend was into porn before we got together, but I thought his “consumption” would stop once we started having sex. Unfortunately, he’s still watching porn. What should I do? –Donna H., 21, Tampa, Fla. A: I’m having a hard time sympathizing with you, because you already knew his history with porn before the relationship started. You needed to evaluate his “consumption” before getting serious and asked yourself, “Can I deal with this if he decides not to stop?” A woman should never think she can change her man. Men are slow to change. They do it on their own time. Unless porn is getting in the way of your sexual relationship, let him have his flicks. Your man just needs to know that he can press “Stop” and have the real thing. Have a question for Talia? E-mail her at talia.cadet@gmail.com.

Whether you’re a college graduate or undergrad with no experience, interning is the best way to go
I
nternships can help students utilize the skills and knowledge they have acquired throughout their college career,” Education Portal, a website that is a virtual library of career information, degree programs and colleges that specialize in a specific discipline, says. “Students may also learn new skills while on the job under the supervision of a mentor.” To find them, look at websites that offer listings for a certain field. For example, www.Ed2010.com is a very particular internship website for students who want to work in magazines. The website gives advice and hosts workshops on everything from what to include in a handwritten thank-you note to what to wear to and what questions to ask during an interview. You can also visit the sites of companies you want to intern for,— they will usually have information about how to apply, deadlines and details on whom to follow-up with. Your university’s career services center will be able to help you, as well. Here are some tips to help you snag your dream internship:

■ Cover all bases. After you have found a company suited for what you’re looking for, it’s time to write the cover letter. In this formal letter detailing your relevant work experience, you will write an attention-grabbing first sentence. Intern Web recommended showing you have researched the company. “This is perhaps one of the most important things you can do because it will place you in the minority.” ■ Succinctly sell yourself. Keep your résumé short, current and include impressive details like career summaries at the top to convey why you’re the best candidate as quickly as possible. ■ Work with what you have. If you don’t have much job experience, list responsibilities you’ve had in campus orgs, places you’ve traveled, and what you do in your spare time. ■ Weigh the pros and cons. If you receive an internship offer, Make sure the company will treat interns respectfully and will not take advantage of your time and skills. It is important to make sure you will gain the experience you desire from the internship. Don’t expect to be doing the same work as your boss, but if your only duties are filing papers and getting coffee for the big wigs, you may want to explore other options. –S.C.
Brandeis University: If you could choose to be raised by robots, dinosaurs, or aliens, who would you pick? Why? One of the “creative” questions featured in a Huffington Post article highlighting how colleges have began supplementing traditional admission essay prompts with unorthadox questions to allow students to show their personalities.

A
s the clock strikes midnight, you realize that it is a new year and you have no man. This wouldn’t bother you as much if you weren’t in a room full of confetti, kazoos and kissing. Of all people, you find yourself surrounded by couple kissing and ushering another love-filled year. Since love may not fall out of the sky into your lap, you might have to make some minor changes that can yield major benefits. Keep these ten New Year Resolutions in mind as you lead your day-to-day life. You will know who to thank when the men, dates and love start rolling in. 1. Leave the past where it belongs. Baggage and bitterness is the best man repellent out there. Use the past to make better and wiser decisions in the future, but do not let the heartache cripple you. Any man you encounter in the present or future should not pay for what a man did in the past. It not fair to him and you might cheat yourself out of someone worthwhile. 2. Smile. Walking around mad at the world will turn people, especially men, off. A smile shows that you are a positive, fun and approachable. Plus, what is sexier than a smile? 3. Reevaluate your standards. Take out pen and paper and write down all the qualities you desire in a mate. Read over it. Does “Must like broccoli” really need to be on there? No. Scrap anything unrealistic and petty on that list. You don’t want your list to be so narrow that you shut out the dozens of guys. Your inventory needs to have wiggle room and only comprise of attributes you cannot live without. 4. Get hooked up. Involve your loved ones in your search for love. If your friends, family and colleagues know you best, it is safe to say that they have some clue about the type of men you may be compatible with. Let the people you love

The new year is a perfect time to snag a new man, and our sex and relationships guru Talia Cadet has 10 resolutions that will bring you love in 2011
and trust introduce you to someone new or set up a blind date. This may turn into a disaster, but you can at least get some dating practice. 4. Go digital. A 2010 research study commissioned by Match.com found that one in five people have dated someone they met online and one in five relationships began on an online dating site. It’s possible for online dating to become the norm. While it’s a great way to meet men, don’t forget to play it safe when you meet people online. 5. Put your best self forward. First impressions are everything, and men are visual creatures. When a man crosses paths with you, he can’t just look at you and assess your personality. All he sees is what you are showing him. There is no need walk around campus with straight-out-of-the-salon hair, a full face of makeup and outfits anchored in six-inch stilettos every day; you can still meet Mr. Right in sweats and sneakers if you are clean and put together. 6. Take stock in your appearance. Not just for potential suitors, but for other people and yourself. Peoples’ perceptions of you will be shaped by their first impression. If you look your personal best, you will feel great and act accordingly. 7. Wear confidence as a garment. No outfit can mask a lack of self-assurance. Every time you step out into the world, hold your head high and let everyone know you are beautiful, intelligent and classy. How is a man supposed to believe in your beauty, intelligence and class if you don’t? Remember that men like asser-
tiveness, not cockiness. Nothing screams insecurity like an arrogant attitude. 8. Talk to strangers. Go against everything you learned in kindergarten. If you see someone who piques your interest, approach them and speak — what’s the worst that can happen? If you don’t know what to say, start off with paying him a compliment; It’s a great conversation starter, and you will get brownie points for stroking his ego. 9. Go out. Grab a couple of girlfriends (large groups of women intimidate men) for a night out. Be fun, flirty and

approachable. You want to be in places where the types of men you desire tend to hang out. Artists will not be at the bar scooping peanuts by the handful and sports fanatics will not be at the library on a Monday night. 10. Change your outlook on love. Attitude is everything. Being positive and optimistic is the best thing you can do for yourself when love seems not to be your side. Don’t let the media and your bitter girlfriends bring you down. As long as you know that you are deserving of love, and can be an asset to someone special, you will be just fine. ■

eather can add a unique flare to your wardrobe this winter and coming spring to make you a standout. It was everywhere in Resort collections including Rag & Bone, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Bottega Veneta, and Christian Dior who all used it in fresh, unexpected ways. This month, add a little texture and instantly update your look with a leather skirt. We found this amazing A-line stunner at Topshop, one of our favorite haunts, for $125, and with four options to choose from — black, gray, brown and tan — it was a task to choose a favorite! Dress it down for the classroom with a slouchy sweatshirt and flat moto-inspired boots; pair it with an oxford shirt and platform pumps for the office; or team it up with a ruffled blouse and boy blazer, like Twilight’s Ashley Greene (left) shows us. Replace your boots with booties or patent peep-toe pumps for an interview — add a messenger bag to show you mean business, not pleasure. Until the mercury rises, pair these surprisingly versatile bottoms with tights and a V-neck sweater over an oxford button-front shirt for added warmth, but come spring, don’t be afraid to spotlight those gams. – Ashley Williams skirts $125 each, Topshop; topshop.com.

trend alert: minimalism ■ The best way to start a new year is with a clean slate, and that goes for your personal style too. The economy’s still bleak for many, so people are going back to the basics and the resort collections exemplified this idea to the max. Instead of spikes, neon colors, and hard metal detailing from past seasons, designers conjured up minimalistic threads with clean lines and sharp tailoring that have staying power. We’ve jumped on board the less-ismore bandwagon, offering a helping hand to give you a clean start to your 2011 wardrobe. – A.W.

designer spotlight: emerson fry Flowers in Springtime: Floral pins, classic coats, pumpkin-colored pumps (and trinkets perfect for the dorm or apartment!) comprise EmersonMade, a cool, vintage-inspired collection By Carissa Chesanek
E
merson Fry started out in the fashion business as a “one-woman operation” simply by selling homemade flower pins here and there in New York City. Today she has grown her collection into a larger variety of accessories and vintage-inspired clothing. Emerson and her husband Ryan partnered up and created EmersonMade, a collection of down to earth, everyday styles. The twosome do everything themselves including styling, photography and layouts featured on the website. Fry, who hails from New Hampshire, first designed large hand-dyed and handstitched flower blooms; every flower bud was made completely different from the next,
giving each a unique character and soul. While the blooms are still very much the main focus, other pieces have been added to the collection. Clutches are huge, with vibrant prints as bold as the flowers. The Poppy and Doggie Clutch is a recent addition to the EmersonMade family with black dog silhouettes scattered on a cream colored background and a pop of red from the large flower bloom. The Emerson clutch is quite the contrary made with soft leather and brass hardware to give it a classic, clean, ready-for-work appearance. Leather belts and patent shoes also catch the eye, and might we suggest the EM Pumpkin patent heels, that graze 4” and in a flavorful hue

Relying on a less-is-more beauty strategy, this State University at Oneonta student encourages women find their inner beauty, and the outward appeal will follow How do you define beauty? It's hard to define beauty because beauty is in the eye of the beholder and therefore is different to everyone. What was the best beauty advice that you learned in college? The best beauty advice that I learned in college was as long as you can look yourself in the mirror and love the person who's looking back, then it doesn't matter what others think. What was the one beauty item that you couldn't live without in college? Maybelline waterproof mascara and Cover Girl complexion pocket powder foundation were two things I never left my dorm/apartment without. Who is your beauty inspiration? I look in the media for style updates but I’m not crazy worried about my looks. I feel beauty is more about what's inside than what someone looks like. Do you believe fashion and beauty play a big role in your life? I tend to believe that fashion and beauty doesn’t play a big role in my life. However, I'm most likely mistaken. I think I lack too much self-confidence for it not to. But I can pretend. What is one piece of beauty advice you live by? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It's in places you would never imagine it would be. It's in people who may not be society's definition of "beautiful." The sooner we all learn that, the happier this world will be.

Do you believe fashion and beauty play a big role in your life? I think it plays a big role in everyone's life, whether or not you realize it is another question. You might be fashion savvy or a "jeans and a T-shirt" kind of person. But whether you like it or not, people are going to make presumptions based on how you dress and how you look. I believe in looking your personal best, but I’m not into the latest trends and beauty products. Brand names are meaningless to me. What is one piece of beauty advice you live by? The best advice I can think of when it comes to beauty is to learn to love your flaws. How do you define beauty? Beauty is confidence, knowing exactly who you are, flaunting your flaws, and being comfortable in your own skin. What was the one beauty item that you couldn't live without in college? Sleep. What was the best beauty advice that you learned in college? That everyone has their own style, and while it might not be your particular cup of tea, it doesn't mean it's not beautiful. Who is your beauty inspiration? I can't say that I have one. I love natural beauty; women who can be gorgeous without trying and don't feel the need to cover up with makeup just because society tells them they should.

Bethy Pierre Turning to celebrities that epitomize modernday glamour and elegance, the founder of KissyFace Artistry — a hobby-turned-moneymaking makeup venture — urges women to stay true to themselves and take advantage of every opportunity to nonverbally convey confidence
Eva Marcille
How do you define beauty? Beauty is confidence. What was the best beauty advice that you learned in college? Drink water as if your life depended upon it. Clear skin is a girl's best friend. Be comfortable in your skin. Don't aspire to be anything but you because that's when your true beauty shines through. What was the one beauty item that you couldn't live without in college? To this day I keep a lip balm, lip glosses, and lipstick in my bag. I've been loving EOS lip balms. The egg shape is just so adorable. As for my everyday lip gloss, I love L'Oreal Infallible Lip Gloss. It's a natural lip look but makes my lips pop. And when I want to wear lipstick I usually go for a pink, nude lip look. What was one of your biggest faux pas in college? False lashes that look false to the point that they look plastic. Ugh!!! Who is your beauty inspiration? Women whose makeup that I've always liked are Kelly Rowland and Eva Marcille. What’s one piece of beauty advice that you live by? It's a constant everyday thing especially being a woman. How you present yourself speaks nonverbally says so much about you. Whether you’re trying or not, how you dress or wear your makeup speaks to who you are as a person. What is KissyFace Artistry? Currently I'm running my own freelance makeup company, KissyFace Artistry. It's my baby, my labor of love. It's a hobby that has grown to a venture that I'm pursuing full-time while in school for entrepreneurship. We stand on the premise of "doing make-up and doing it well." We're available for workshops/seminars, bridal parties, special events, fashion shows, magazine photo shoots, consultations, and personal shopping excursions. The beauty of diversity
Siobhan Cassidy’s dishing on how embracing a cultural mix of style and beauty has enhanced her college experience
I
t wasn’t until my freshman year of college that I truly realized the many shapes, sizes and shades that beautiful women flaunt on a day-to-day basis. Because of the diversity I encountered, I realized that beauty doesn’t always align with socitey’s “Barbie” standard—tanned skin, long blonde hair and big breasts. These experiences made me see that beauty comes from self-confidence. Maybe this was because the women who lived across the hallway from me wore these modern, colorful burkas. They carried themselves with so much confidence; it made their faces glow. The media has a reputation of not representing reality, according to ChildrenNow.org. Women, who are surrounded by the unrealistic, unattainable, airbrushed photos of models, have shown a connection to low self-confidence. Over the past few years, high school students have been getting plastic surgery

to boost their self-confidence. ABC news reported that the number of teenagers getting plastic surgery is influenced by the media glamorizing the procedures celebrities have done and through the never-ending onslaught of reality TV shows based on plastic surgery. Recently, I saw a commercial for Bridalplasty, an E! reality series where gorgeous bridesto-be, are in “a quest to win their ultimate dream wedding.” Whoever wins will get “cut” – a plastic surgery makeover. The competitors, the youngest being 20 years old, made “wish lists” of which plastic surgery procedures they would like to have done if they win, the longest had 12 changes. I couldn’t roll my eyes enough times while watching this. My initial thought was: Their dream wedding is to look like someone they’re not? But then, as I used rewound and replayed my DVR, I found myself extremely uneasy with how these shows parade plastic surgery like it’s no big deal. A recent episode of Maury documented teenagers who were getting plastic surgery.
“Because of the diversity I encountered, I realized that beauty doesn’t always align with socitey’s “Barbie” standard—tanned skin, long blonde hair and big breasts.” 16-year-old Kristi had breast augmentation and liposuction because she was being bullied in school. She felt uncomfortable and insecure. Her parents along with the parents of other teenagers on the show said they felt that their daughters were doing the right thing. In reality, these teenagers
have not only not had the chance to fully develop, physically and mentally, but they also have not had the chance to see different types of beauty. They haven’t gotten the opportunity to realize, like I have in college, that beauty comes from within. Now, these students

who bullied Kristi in high school have left a permanent scar on her body. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, in 2009 an estimated 210,000 teenagers, ages 13 to 19, underwent plastic surgery. Although surgeries were down two percent since 2008, the FDA has not approved some surgeries, such as breast augmentations, for teenagers. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons Web site states that although the FDA re-approved silicone breast implants to be used for breast augmentations in 2006, it has only been approved in women aged 22 years or older. Recently, the press has
Galina Monaco, said “No more seeing what you can't have; this is a fashion party that invites and inspires everyone.” Jessica Simpson starred in her own documentary reality TV show, The Price of Beauty, which took viewers across the world showcasing what beauty means in diverse cultures. From Thailand to Los Angeles, Simpson, along with friends Ken Paves and CaCee Cobb, discovered local fashions, diets and beauty regimes. Simpson has taken plenty of bullets when it comes to the tabloids discussing her image. “It’s a hard thing for me to talk about because I celebrate women of all sizes,” said Simpson as a guest on Oprah’s talk show. “I do believe that it is shown a change of heart in some of the images they’re portraying. High-end fashion models have gone from skeleton-skinny to courageously curvy. (Though the verdict’s still out on if the past few seasons are the new rule, and not just an exception.) These voluptuous models—also known as plus size—begin at a size 8 and average at a 12, while the average American woman’s size is 14. Plus-size models are meant to show the public diverse body types. Prada used plus-size models during their spring 2011 collection during Milan Fashion Week. This year, New York Fashion Week featured the first plus-size only runway show hosted by OneStopPlus. com. Designer for the company,

something that comes from within. It is something you do have to find within yourself and become comfortable with yourself.” One morning, in my dorm’s bathroom, I was fixing my hair before class when my neighbor walked in. She too was primping herself before class, adjusting her pink burka skirt, detached black top and headscarf. Her skin was glowing and, in the reflection of the mirror, she smiled at me. I could not help but think, although I’m standing next to her with my hair curled and my Steve Madden boots on, we were both equally beautiful, young women, a priceless discovery. ■

et’s set the scene: An adolescent girl with an acne issue is in search of a solution to this pressing nuisance. After trying many products and quick-fix solutions, she finds a loose powder that once applied, gave her the look of the smooth complexioned that she desired. It was in this moment of excitement-filled discovery that the young girl developed a desire to share this euphoric feeling of fulfillment that finding the right product at the right time gave her. Fast forward to nearly a decade later, and this young girl is a phenomenal young woman who not only stuck with her dream to create cos-
metics, by majoring in chemical engineering in college, but she took the initiative to create an international beauty platform to help women Feel Good, Smell Good, and Look Good (FSL). Kimberly Riley, 26, has done just that as the founder and lead chemist of the eco-friendly FSL Cosmetics line, which launched in January 2010. In 2009, Riley, who works at an engineering firm by day, put her money where her mouth was and began her self-financed mission to make a positive mark on how women view themselves. “I started the line because I wanted to help restore the confidence of women,” she said. “It’s my way of giving back to the mature, modern woman on the go.”

With a goal to ignite confidence in women, Kim Riley runs a business that produces irresistible cosmetics that make you look and feel good By Margaret Francois
“All hard work is going to pay off as long as you continue to be positive, network and surround yourself with like-minded people.” The first products that are available from the line are six lip gloss shades and six lipstick shades. “I asked myself ‘What item does a woman use frequently throughout the day that's stored in her purse?’ Riley said. Lip product was the magic answer. Seven months of research and a substantial amount of trial-and-error later, Riley found herself hosting a launch party for her cosmetics line in NYC. “After college, I was sending resumes to various cosmetics brands and I wasn’t getting any feedback, but where there’s a will there’s a way,” she said. “I taught myself how to make makeup, and within seven months, I started my business. There were many sleepless

nights involved, but I held on to my entrepreneurial spirit.” Bringing goals to fruition through the steady grind of persistence and perseverance are nothing new to this burgeoning beauty entrepreneur. She began exercising a go-getter mentality since her years as a middle school student in New Orleans. When given the opportunity to skip a grade level she didn’t hesitate to sacrifice the lack of school work that comes with summer by taking a class and earning the privilege to skip her freshman year of high school. It’s this degree of drive and ambition along with the support of her parents and boyfriend that perpetuates Riley’s future plans to launch a full line of women’s cosmetics as well as the FSL Platinum Natural Men’s Skincare Line in the near future. “All hard work is going to pay off as long as you continue to be positive, network and surround yourself with like-minded people,” she said.” It makes me happy to know that people believe in me.” ■

f there’s anything that college has taught me, it’s how to look beyond labels, to get down to the nitty-gritty and try new things to create new looks. Recognize the value of creating a well-rounded beauty palette that merges the commercially fabulous with the less-known, but equally dazzling brand. Here are a few little-known lines that make a big impression in my cosmetics caboodle.: 1. Coastal Scents 88 Ultra Shimmer Palette, $20; coastalscents.com. I’m far from being an analog girl in a digital world, but I was behind in time when I discovered this mineral makeup line. The eyeshadow palettes are a winner and are rich with nicely pigmented options galore that range from warm and sultry, to smoky and shimmery. 2. Deborah Lippman Boom Boom Pow nail polish, $20; deborahlippmann.com. These over-the-rainbow nail polish shades give the effect of a party in a bottle with their eclectic shades and texture. The best part is that line’s the creator, Deborah Lippmann, knows nails because she has been the go-to manicurist for several publications and has lacquered the nails of superstars such as Mariah Carey. There are also oneof-a-kind hues that Lippmann collaborated with celebrities to create.

3. Benefit Perfumes, $36; benefitcosmetics.com. I stumbled upon these sassy scents while working as an intern during the summer before my final semester of college. If the pretty packaging isn’t enough to catch you attention, one whiff of these intoxicating smells of exotic flowers, vanilla and sweet fruits will get you hooked. My favorites are Something about Sofia and Laugh with Me Lee Lee. 4. Lash Control Purple Squeeze Volumizing and Conditioning Mascara, $20; lashcontrol.com. Whenever I mention this product the words love at first swipe are destined to be uttered. These colorful tubes of mascara each serve a purpose of their own, whether it’s to add shine, define lashes, or condition them. My favorite, the Purple Squeeze, comes equipped with a volumizing formula that comes equipped with a zigzag brush that gave my lashes the perfect amount of camera-ready oomph. 5. Mixed Chicks No frizz trio, $39; mixedchicks.net. As a naturally curly-haired girl, when the time comes for a wash-andgo to accentuate and nurture my spirally mane, I turn Mixed Chicks’ creamy shampoo and conditioner. Don’t let the name fool you, this product is not just for biracial beauties, women from various ethnic backgrounds can use this system. ■

New Year, same baggage Before you work on the outside, it’s important to work on the inside. Apply these infallible tips to make feel realize your potential By Brianti Downing
W
ith every New Year, we carry the baggage of the previous year with us. There are good things, like our love of romantic films, a desire to learn and those awesome winter boots that were at the top of our Christmas list. Then, there are bad things, like insecurities, self-doubt and a strong desire to change who we are because we believe we aren’t good enough. Not this year. Because you are good enough. Before you put your suitcase away after your long break at home, there are a few things you need to put in it. The first is your insecurities. If you do lose those pounds for your New Year’s resolution, you won’t be happy with yourself until you love the way you look now. If you spend more than thirty seconds obsessing over your body in the mirror, pulling imaginary fat from your stomach and hating yourself for it, then losing weight won’t make you feel better. There will be

other things to obsess about, like the shape of your nose, the curve of your lips and the slant of your eyes. Write down everything you don’t like about yourself, even the silly things like the arch of your eyebrows. Once you’ve gotten absolutely everything dispose of the paper. Rip it up, throw it out a window or throw a bonfire with your friends. Get rid of it in the most dramatic way you need to, so that you can start erasing those thoughts from your mind. When that paper’s gone, those insecurities about the things that make you who you are will start to go away. So what if you don’t have a shape like Eva Mendes? Eva Mendes
down every outfit you put on and the friend who likes you one day but hates you the next. If you didn’t love them, you probably wouldn’t be friends, but not everyone you love will be a good influence for your life. Sometimes it’s OK to be selfish and think about what you need. If you need to study, then you should have friends who won’t shun you for a week because you choose your education over a fraternity party. Keep your friends that will study with you and love how confident you look in that red dress you may not have been so sure about.
doesn’t have a shape like you either, so embrace what makes you different. No one else on this world is even a little bit like you, and there’s something beautiful in that. Throw in your doubts. College students are full of doubts. How many times have you known the answer in class, but were afraid to raise your hand? How many times did you want to take that demanding course because you knew how much you would learn, but opted out for the easy class? When you doubt your abilities, you’ve failed before you even tried. Failure sounds horrible, right? It’s really not. No one ever got anywhere without failing a few times. If everyone always succeeded, there would be nothing to learn
and nothing to work for. Challenge yourself this year by doing something you’ve always been afraid to do. Take those guitar lessons, start that club at school or answer the question in class you know the answer to. These are the first steps to realizing what you’re really capable of and they will help you gain the confidence you need to succeed in life. Reassess your friendships. As many excuses as you try to make for them or ways you try to make the relationship work, there are some friends who are not invested in making your life easier. There’s the friend who always begs you to go partying when she knows you’re studying, the friend who always puts
Don’t end the relationship in a messy confrontation. People change, including you, and ending things on a bad note may make it impossible to reconnect later if you’re both at a place where being friends can be good for both of you. Just gradually taper off the friendship by politely declining to hang out when you have to study or if you have other plans. The friends who really care about you will understand. Once you’re all packed those things away, you can really start to grow as a person. Don’t get discouraged if your insecurities sneak out of the suitcase or your doubts turn up in the middle of your big exam. You may fall down and get some bruises along the way, but you’ve just got to dust yourself off and start climbing until you reach the top. ■

What’s Inside >> Easy tips to burn off the holiday weight 69 >> Expert advice on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle 70 >> The 411 on the disease that will affect four in five women by the time their 50 74 Edited By Brianti Downing
JAYE BODY
Tip 1: Drink more water. Invest in a BPA-free water bottle and keep it filled with water, preferably, spring water; but drink whatever’s available, as long as it’s H2O! Drink a minimum of eight eight-ounce glasses per day. Extra Credit: Dehydration occurs year round. The first signs are headaches and fatigue.
No Time Like the Present!
The holidays are finally over. After going several rounds with your horrible holiday eating habits (we’re sure your grandma’s award-winning pumpkin pie was worth it), your body could probably use some rejuvenating. Follow these tips and you’ll be fit by February
Tip 2: Be more active. It’s easier than you think! Take a couple laps around your building. Leave the car at home and walk the campus. If a car is a must, park farther away. Take advantage of your on-campus gym. Most likely, it has well-maintained equipment, fitness classes and plenty of hot athletes to admire while you jog on the treadmill. Extra Credit: Many consider cardio exercise as the best and easiest way to burn calories fast, but first, you must know how to use cardio machines effectively. Interval training—pushing your body and then resting—is proven to bring about the greatest results, as opposed to maintaining a constant speed. It causes the body to exert extra energy, thus burning more calories. Next time you’re on the treadmill, run as hard as you can for 30 seconds. Resume a brisk walk for 90 seconds, and then repeat. Continue this for 10 minutes. This type of exercise is more demanding on your body, so start slow, maybe with 10 seconds of running, 45 seconds walking. Work up from there. Don’t forget to warm up first. You’ll see—and feel—the results. Tip 3: Eat smart. Stock the fridge with easy-to-grab munchables that will keep you on the health track all week: plain yogurt, organic raisins, hard-boiled eggs, seasonal fruit and vegetables (apples, oranges, grapefruit, tangerines, bananas, broccoli, carrots). Munch these before a meal to keep from overeating. Extra Credit: Chow down on one before, or during, a mid-day class, to avoid sudden hunger hysteria. – Emily Ramsey >>

t’s a new year and a chance for a new you. Just like last year (and secretly the year before) you’ve made a New Year’s resolution to finally shed those extra pounds and get in shape. But before you cut out the carbs and switch to that amazing cabbage soup diet (yuck!), you may want to rethink your health and fitness tactics before you once again fall victim to the “fat pants” and another failed New Year’s resolution. The fact is starvation diets and two-hour-long exercise sessions at the gym don’t work and never will. But have no fear, the good news is losing weight and looking great is possible, but it won’t happen overnight and without a little hard work and commitment. Luckily, JAYE has sought out the best advice from today’s top health and fitness experts to help you reach your New Year’s goals once and for all, so you can finally ditch those “fat pants” and slip into some skinny jeans.

Getting Started Sadly, there are no short-cuts, instant antidotes, or magic spells to make you look like that runway model on TV, and Harvey E. Walden IV from VH1’s Celebrity Fit Club recommends that you stop looking for one. Harvey knows what it takes to get in shape and uses his previous training as a drill instructor in the military to whip overweight celebrities into tiptop form. Harvey’s tough-love approach to health and fitness begins with the knowledge that losing weight and getting in shape requires blood, sweat and tears. “The short term fixes won’t last,” says Harvey. Instead, Harvey proposes that you make a plan and stick to it for the long haul. It’s important that your health and fitness goals are achievable and realistic, says Harvey. Setting unrealistic goals will only lead to failure. “So many people make a resolution to lose this crazy amount of weight” says Harvey. “And it’s easy to get discouraged and give up on yourself when you don't achieve it. Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin, co-authors of Skinny
Bitch, a manifesto on healthy living and a New York Times bestseller, agree that starting out with a small, practical goal is better than setting a large goal which can often seem daunting or impossible over time. “Define your goals and make sure they are realistic and doable within your lifestyle,” says Kim. “Don’t totally re-vamp your entire diet overnight,” she warns, noting that such strict approaches to eating typically aren’t successful. Both Rory and Kim suggest making small changes over a period of time, such as swapping high-calorie soda and juice drinks for water or incorporating more fruits and vegetables into meals to pack on more nutrition without packing on
the extra pounds. “Just start somewhere and start small,” recommends Rory. “Rome wasn’t built in a day, and your perfect health and physique won’t be either.” But how exactly should you begin this journey towards fit and fabulous? According to Harvey, proper exercise and healthy eating is the start and foundation to a trimmer and slimmer you. As the experts agree, being healthy isn’t achieved by extreme forms of diet and exercise; instead, they maintain that the only effective way to attain a sleek physique is through a sensible, healthy lifestyle change.
The Healthy Eating Pyramid is an excellent guide to help you eat well and lead a thriving life.
Finding a Balance A healthy lifestyle change begins by developing an intelligence and consciousness about your body and what you’re putting in it. Being aware of the food you’re consuming is important to being healthy. “Having good health and being a healthy weight is a choice, so the first step is to commit to making healthier choices as much as possible,” says Kim. However, this doesn’t mean that you can never eat another piece of chocolate cake; it does means you can’t have it every day or for every meal. As Rory puts its, “When you live a healthy lifestyle you can have your cake and eat it.” Daphne Oz, the daughter of famous TV host Dr. Mehmet Oz, says that finding a balance is key to sustaining a healthy lifestyle. However, Daphne knows all too well how difficult it is to be healthy, especially in college. Growing up, Daphne struggle with her weight, but decided to take charge of her health after she entered college. By transforming her diet and exercise, Daphne lost 30 pounds and was inspired to write The Dorm Room Diet, a popular 10-step guide to healthy living designed specifically for college students. One of Daphne’s best tips to avoid the dreaded “Freshman 15” is the rule, “substitution where you can and moderation where you
can’t.” Daphne uses this rule to help keep her eating habits in check by substituting fresh fruits and vegetables in place of greasy foods and processed items. But on those occasions when Daphne is craving a highcalorie, low nutrition item such as chips or cookies, she allows herself to have some, but only in moderation. “If you eat healthy for five or six days during the week, then you have a little wiggle room to indulge in those sweet treats on the seventh day,” says Daphne. Rory shares the same mindset and says, “If eating well is who you are, then having an occasional drink or greasy meal isn’t going to kill you.” Learning the Nitty-Gritty “Not all foods are created
equal,” says Daphne. Although a handful of carrots and a handful of crackers contain roughly the same calories, they do not share the same nutritional value. One option is far healthier than the other. But knowing what foods are healthy and what aren’t can sometimes be difficult to discern, especially with all the garbage on TV and products in magazines claiming instant weight loss results (five pounds in five days!) for a very high price, of course. Luckily, the faculty from the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health created a simple, easy to follow guide to healthy living called the Healthy Eating Pyramid. Modeled after the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s
Food Guide Pyramid and its 2005 sister version called MyPyramid, the Healthy Eating Pyramid offers new, up-to-date information on eating and exercise that the two USDA versions lacked. Most importantly, the Healthy Eating Pyramid “sits on a foundation of daily exercise and weight control.” The Healthy Eating Pyramid, which was created in 2008, is structured on the concept that food groups at the bottom of the pyramid like whole grains, fruits, and vegetables should be eaten more abundantly than foods at the top of the pyramid, such as red meats, butter, and refined grains like white rice, pasta, and potatoes. Some of the major differences between the Healthy Eating Pyramid and the USDA’s MyPyramid are their approach to refined starch, dairy consumption, and protein intake. Unlike MyPyramid, which allots half of our daily grain intake for refined starches, the Healthy Eating Pyramid suggests a much smaller quantity for such starches. Recognizing that refined starches behave like sugar and only add empty calories while at the same time draining the body of vitamins and minerals, the Healthy Eating Pyramid positions refined starches at the top of the pyramid as a recommendation to eat them only sparingly. Additionally, while the Harvard researchers >>

realize the importance of the consumption of dairy in reducing the risk of osteoporosis, they do not believe that three servings of milk per day is necessary or even healthy as previously reported by the USDA. The creators of the Healthy Eating Pyramid argue that three servings of milk per day amounts to more than 300 extra calories and can contribute to an increase in the risk of prostate cancer and possibly ovarian cancer, a result, says some research, of a heavy dairy diet. As with refined starches and dairy, the Harvard researchers suggests a reduced consumption of fatty proteins like red meats and instead urge you to opt for a diet high in proteins like beans, fish, and poultry which have a much lower fat content. The Healthy Eating Pyramid also supports eating a mainly plant-based diet because these types of food contain high levels of fiber, a carbohydrate that has been shown to reduce the risk of developing various conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, diverticular disease, and constipation. The most unique aspect of the Healthy Eating Pyramid is it’s compete lack of guidelines on serving sizes, calories, or grams. While the pyramid purposefully fails to mention specific recommendations for calories, the creators of the pyramid do maintain the importance

of keeping calories in check in order to avoid weight gain. Understanding the Science of Weight Loss and Weight Gain In order to ensure your weight stays at its current level, you need to follow the simple science of energy balance: weight change = (calories in) – (calories out). This means that you need to burn as many calories as you consume in order to avoid gaining weight. According to the American Heart Association, an average female age 19-30 needs between 2,000 to 2,400 calories per day to function properly. For those women looking to lose weight, they must burn more calories than they consume. This means they must either reduce their calorie consumption or expend more calories by exercising. “It is such simple math,” says Kim. “What you are putting in your body has to be burned off, so if you are eating a bunch of crappy meals everyday and not exercising at least three times a week, the weight will pile up.” Although it is important to be mindful of our calorie intake, Kim doesn’t recommend strictly tracking calories every day, nor does she feel it’s needed. “If you are eating a healthy, balanced diet that doesn’t contain a lot of processed, sugar filled, fried, fatty foods then that alone will help keep your weight in check,” says Kim. Fitting In Fitness While most experts agree that diet accounts for a majority of your health and wellness, they
also agree that fitness and exercise should not be ignored. “Fitness is just as important to achieving a healthy lifestyle as nutrition and eating habits,” says Daphne. According to the Department of Nutrition at Harvard University, the average person should exercise for at least 30 minutes a day three times

“It is such simple math: What you are putting in your body has to be burned off, so if you areeating a bunch of crappy meals everyday and not exercising at least three times a week, the weight will pile up.” – Kim Barnouin a week to ensure a healthy lifestyle. For those individuals looking to lose weight, health instructor Sarah Dussault recommends exercising five days a week for 30 minutes of rigorous exercise or 60 minutes of moderate exercise. It’s clear that exercise is needed to lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle given the fact that one pound is equal to 3,500 calories. Sarah urges students to make fitness a priority and suggests performing simple exercises in their dorm room if they don’t have the time or energy to lug themselves to the gym. Some exercises Sarah recommends are jumping jacks which are a good form of cardio and pushups and planks to help strengthen the core,
feel,” says Sarah. So, whether you need to lose five pounds, 50, or none at all, it’s important to realize that being healthy is a life-long commitment. Your journey towards health and wellness shouldn’t end when you when you can flaunt those bikini-ready abs or finally fit in to that dress you’ve been drooling over months. Do not revert to binging on pizza and beer! Continue to make your health a priority, so when that ball drops at midnight next New Year’s Eve you won’t have to worry about emptying out your fridge or psyching yourself up to go the gym. You’ll already be fit and fabulous and dancing the night away. ■

HPV: Prevention and Detection An estimated 80% of women will get HPV by the time they’re 50, but too many women have never even heard of it By Kate Marcus
HPV (human papillomavirus) is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the United States. However, most people who are infected don’t know it, and it is estimated that incidents of genital warts may be as high as 1 person per 1,000, and 1.4 million people can be infected at any given time. It is estimated that at least 50 percent of sexually active people will acquire HPV at some point in their lives, and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that 80 percent of women will get HPV by age 50. HPV is a group of viruses that infect the epithelial cells of the skin and mucous membranes. Most HPV infections are asymptomatic, which means that there may be no outward signs of it, such as the presence of genital warts. Warts can appear within weeks or months after sexual contact with an infected partner—
74 JANUARY 2011 jaye.com
even if the infected partner has no signs of genital warts. If left untreated, genital warts might go away, remain unchanged, or increase in size or number. Not all strains of HPV are dangerous. Often, the immune system clears itself of benign types of HPV within a couple of
years, and this occurs in about 90 percent of HPV cases. More than 40 types of HPV can infect the genitals, mouth, and throat. Strains include types 6 and 11, which can cause benign abnormalities in cervical cells, anogenital warts and may cause recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP), which is a disease of the respiratory tract.
The most dangerous strains include types 16 and 18, which can cause cervical cell anomalies that can serve as precursors to cancer, and can eventually lead to cancers such as cervical, vaginal, vulvar and anal cancer, as well as mouth and throat cancers. Cervical cancer often isn’t diagnosed until the advanced stages when it becomes difficult to treat. However, rates of cervical cancer have dropped by about 75 percent since programs promoting Pap screenings have been introduced. It is important to note that the types of HPV that cause genital warts are not the same as the types that may contribute to cervical cancer. Warts can appear as a small bump or clusters of bumps in the genital area. They can be small or
large, raised or flat, or shaped like cauliflower. Health care providers examining the genital region during an office exam can diagnose warts. There are a number of things women can do to prevent HPV and cervical cancer. Abstinence is the only 100% effective way to prevent HPV; however, those individuals who are sexually
active can reduce their risk with condoms, although they are not 100% foolproof in preventing HPV and other STIs. Two vaccines, Gardasil and Cervarix, can be administered against the types of HPV that are known to cause most cervical cancers to women between the ages of 11 to 26. Gardasil, the first vaccine to be approved, is based upon antibodies to the viral L1 capsid protein (the protein shell) and is designed to prevent infection by strains 16 and18. Men can also receive the Gardasil vaccine between the ages of 9 through 26. The vaccines work by neutralizing antibodies in our immune systems, which protect our bodies from infection. Each Gardasil shot costs $120, and is administered in a series of three shots over six months. The vaccines are most effective when all doses are received before a person has sexual contact with his or her first partner. While there is no treatment available for HPV itself, there are treatments for the diseases it causes, such as genital warts and HPV-related cancers. Women should continue to get regular cervical cancer screening, as the vaccine will not provide protection against all types of HPV that cause cervical cancer. Visible genital warts can be removed with medications or treated by a health care provider. ■

Every year, we have the same resolutions — lose 20 pounds, save up for that new ride, be a more dependable girlfriend — and every year, we give them up. But Chloe Metzger wonders, Are we the problem or is it our resolutions?
J
anuary 1: A day to reminisce over the past year, take down holiday decorations, sip champagne with family and friends and decide, once again, that you are not good enough. Somewhere between Christmas dinner and New Year’s brunch, we reflect on the last 12 months of our lives and resolve we have failed, in some sense. Then as the clock hits midnight on New Year’s Day, resolutions as tired as Dad’s “remember when…” stories begin to chime in our minds, making us believe that we need to alter our lifestyles, while being bombarded with images in media that reinforce the idea that we just don’t measure up to Hollywood’s glamourous beauties. Forget about the eight pounds you managed to shed in 2010—this year it needs to be 20 pounds. How about the huge dent you made in your college loans? Still not enough. It seems that the New Year brings with it both a fresh start and old feelings of inadequacy. Of course, not
every girl succumbs to these pressures, and some even manage to use their resolutions for charitable good. Unfortunately, the rest resort to the same promises of losing weight, managing money and breaking bad habits—just some of the top resolutions for 2010, according to USA. gov. Throughout the country, millions of women “fix” their lives during the same month, once a year, for every year to come. “We live in a world in which time is socially organized,” says Gary A. Fine, author and sociologist at Northwestern University. “In a sense, you can start to change yourself at any moment. New Year’s Day provides a symbolic value of time that becomes important for everyone in the culture.” With personal change occurring every year, at what point will women end the battle against themselves and simply love who they are? Creating resolutions could be an empowering experience, if they were not so selfdeprecating. Vowing to plant a garden, read the Twilight series (secretly, of course) or do volunteer work are forceful

Even our childhood resolutions consisted of candy and soda deprivation. The backwards logic of giving up favored activities in order to improve happiness plagues women every year. New Year’s resolutions are like lifestyle diets, and the worst part is that we never manage to stick to them. Days after the holiday visitors have gone home and work begins again, we slowly realize the gravity of our goals. Another stress has been added to our lives, eating away until we finally give up and give in. While the intricacies may vary, most modern festivities view New Year’s as a time to celebrate life with a wealth of food and family. If we have managed to carry these traditions with us for thousands of years, why do personal resolutions seem to dissolve after only a few months? Researchers have found that four out of five people who pledge to stop smoking or lose weight will not succeed. Richard Wiseman, a psychologist at the University of Hertfordshire, who led the study states that the majority of people ran into problems when they fixated on the downside of failing to keep their resolutions. Women in particular let occasional setbacks affect their willpower and confidence, and nearly 60% dropped their resolutions by six months. et there is still hope for your New Year’s resolutions. Wiseman says women were more successful when they were encouraged by family and friends to persevere after the lapse of old habits. Those who also told their social circles about their resolutions found it easier to stay on track. People often generalize their goals by saying, “I’ll go to the gym more often,” or “I’m going to lose weight,” which makes it difficult to notice

improving flaws rather than promoting inner beauty. Yes, we have all heard the old “inner beauty” speech a dozen times, but the message still has not caught on. If we have managed to fight for the right to be as powerful as we are today, we should be able to change our personal views to reflect our strength and beauty. Choose this year’s resolu-
tion based not on flaws or outer appearances, but on the enrichment of life. Vow to treat yourself to more rest by getting to bed earlier, or live a healthier life by eating two fresh veggies per day. Rather than swear off fast food for good, prepare a homemade meal three times a week. “Do it in a way that inspires you,” says Fine. “It’s not simply saying, ‘I’m going to lose 10 pounds because I’m so ugly,’ but ‘I’m going to lose 10 pounds because I feel beautiful.’” Cut the “stop” from your resolutions and instead promise to do something for yourself. January provides everyone with a fresh beginning—start yours on a positive note. So have another piece of pie and enjoy your friends and family this holiday. Here’s to the only numbers keeping track of this year are those of the New Year’s Rockin’ Eve countdown. ■

Beyond the Crystal Ball
As curious as they come, Brianti Downing volunteered to play JAYE’s unofficial guinea pig and visit a psychic and astrologer for clarity on her present and to peek into her future. The reading resulted in an amalgam of anxiety and exhiliration, and helped her realize she has so much to look forward to after graduation I’ve only known three things about my future: I want to be the editor-in-chief of a national women’s magazine by the time I’m 35, I want to live in New York City and my wedding song will be “Never Knew I Needed” by Ne-Yo. ¶ I try my best to live in the present, but the closer my college graduation gets, the more I start to wonder about the next stage of my life. In a perfect world, I’ll get a good job and a place of my own, but there’s always that chance I could end up moving back home with my family. ¶ In the spirit of the future, I went to see a psychic and an astrologer to explore where my life is now and where it will be. My position on these two methods was unsure because I’ve never tested them before. While some people can discount something before they’ve experienced it, I can’t. A week after I decided to write this story, I was sitting in an office in the back of a Wild Iris, a bookstore in the city where I attend school. I’d expected, and admittedly hoped for, a velvet curtain room with a gypsy looking into a crystal ball to see into my future. What I got was a tidy office with one of the store owners and resident psychic, Bernadette (who doesn‘t really predict the future). She could be best described as the mom of a friend we’ve all had--she’s nice, but she tells it like it is. I instantly liked her. Since her crystal ball was apparently in the shop, she used cards, which she held over a candle as she explained her views on her psychic ability. “When you think, you send electrical charges into the universe and I’m a human pacemaker,” she says. “I can measure the electrical charge.” I spent about an hour with Bernadette and she really “hit the nail on the head,” so to speak. We met at Starbucks, which he later told me was the sign of an Aquarius born on my birthday-I don’t want anyone in my home that I don’t know. Robert told me had an astrological reading in the 1970s and it stuck with him so much that he moved to Florida a few years ago to study astrology. Astrology isn’t the easiest thing to figure out. He needed my birthday and my exact time of birth. For the sake of keeping clarity, I’ll leave out the parts of astrology about things like what Uranus signifies and what it would mean if it were in my fourth house versus my fifth house. If you have time, I definitely suggest learning more about astrology; you have to be surprisingly intelligent to be an astrologer. Next year, my astrological chart says I will have an intense love affair with my career and a personal relationship that could lead to a long-term commitment, like marriage (possibly the most frightening thing I’ve ever heard). I might buy a house, which I hope is an apartment in the Chelsea section of Manhattan or Williamsburg in Brooklyn, and my creativity will be spontaneous for the next 20 years. Thankfully, Robert saw prosperity in my career that will start right after my college graduation and last for a couple of decades. He paused when he looked at the summer and chuckled, “You’re going to grow up.” I really didn’t want to hear that; I enjoy being silly and young, but I guess after graduation the next practical step would be to become a real adult. How Low Can You Go? As they prep to release their fourth studio
album, All Time Low talks to our Chloe Metzger about touring, how much they’ve grown between albums and their love for the band’s devoted fans
F
rom All Time Low’s start in a Maryland high school in 2003, this pop-punk band has released three albums with major success. Their 2009 album release, Nothing Personal, debuted at number four on the Billboard 200, and the band has since landed a song on the soundtrack of Disney’s Alice in Wonderland. As their national tour dwindles down, they make a stop in Iowa City to play another sold out show. With three hours still to go before the band hits the stage, a crowded line has already formed around the building, with dozens of girls sporting homemade All Time Low dresses, shirts, socks, and— yes—tutus. As vocalist Alex Gaskarth and lead guitarist Jack Barakat lounge in their spacious tour bus, they talk about, Dirty Work, their new album, out this month, and the amazing journey that has brought them this far. JAYE: At the end of high school, most kids are thinking about prom and finals. You guys were getting signed by Hopeless Records. How did that affect you?
84 JANUARY 2011 jaye.com
Alex: I don’t really know that it affected us very much. We were just stoked to be given an opportunity to do something we really wanted to do. As far as finishing out high school, we all stuck with it. Jack: You would think that getting signed in high school would make you cooler, but it didn’t. No one really cared. Alex: But we did go to prom; we did all that stuff. JAYE: At what point did you say, “Hey, this could be big. We could actually make this work”? A: I think that moment was when we signed a deal in our senior year. That was a glimmer of opportunity. Then as more and more kids came to see us live, and CDs were being more and more successful with each release, it was kind of the hint that it was growing. JAYE: Has your process for writing music drastically changed since your first album, The Party Scene? A: Yeah, it’s pretty different. We used to all have time and be able to be in the same room for months and write and write and write; whereas now we balance it with tour-
ing.The way it works is we all come up with core ideas for songs, and one will be in a room demoing with the producer before the rest of the guys come in and make sure they are happy with the song. J: As the quote goes, “You have your entire life to write your first record and a couple months to write the rest.” JAYE: Your newest album Dirty Work comes out this month. How is it different than your previous releases? A: There is a lot of growth and a lot of development from a writing standpoint. We are not the same people we were on the last record—as writers or as people. It’s just maturity. We continue to push ourselves creatively, and I think [this album] is better. I hope other people think it’s better! JAYE: Have you generally been pleased with the fan response to your albums? A: Yeah, for the most part it has been amazing. As I’ve said, they do better and better each time, so I really can’t complain. I’m stoked! J: Amen. JAYE: At JAYE, we believe that college is more than a classroom, and we urge our
readers to reach their goals even if it is outside of school. What advice would you give to college kids who find themselves at a crossroads right now in their lives? A: These should be some of the most fun years of your life. I have a lot of friends who are graduating or have graduated from college, and from talking to them and seeing what they went through, these are the best years of your life. I would say to people to make the most of it. It is about the class, and the grades, and setting yourself up for what you want to do in the future, but at the same time it’s also about living in the moment and meeting the people you’re surrounded by. J: Life isn’t about the grades you get in college; it’s about the relationships you make. A: Yeah, it’s about the experience; the things you can set yourself up with in your own mind and not on paper. JAYE: Do you ever wish you had gone to college before pursuing music? J: Not really; we weren’t really school people. A: I don’t regret it at all. There are definitely things we have

missed out on, but at the same time we have had the opportunity to do things so unique compared to a lot of people. In my mind, this trumps anything else I could have done. This is what we wanted to do, so it worked out for us. JAYE: If you could pick one of your songs to show the world who All Time Low is and what you stand for, which one would you choose? J: I’d have to say “Weightless.” It’s kind of like our anthem. A: I agree. I think it’s a song that really sums this band up. JAYE: If you could jam with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be? J: I know yours [gesturing towards Alex]. I’m going to tell you Alex’s: Dave Grohl. A: Yeah, Dave Grohl from the Foo Fighters. I have yet to meet him in a creative environment. I would really like to write with him. J: I think it would be awesome to jam with Mark Hoppus [of Blink-182]. We’ve hung out and toured with them, but we’ve never actually gotten on stage and played music with them. JAYE: What’s the best part about being on tour? A: For me, the travel. Getting to see some of the things we’ve gotten to see. I’ve been to Japan now; I’ve been to Jakarta. I never would have imagined going to Indonesia. It’s crazy. We are going to South American in January, and I’ve never been to South America. J: I like the flavor of having somewhere new every day. When I’m home for two
“The people who listen to our music are what keep us afloat. They are incredible.” weeks I get so bored because I go to the same bars and see the same people every day. I need to [kwachhh] expand. A: Whatever that noise means. That’s what he feels like. J: Yeah, spell that—get that in writing. A: It’s an onomatopoeia …it’s k-w-a-c-h-h-h. JAYE: Have you encountered any fans who come at you just a little too strongly? A: Well, the people who listen to our music are what keep us afloat. They are incredible. J: But the more rabid, the better. [Laughs]
A: We do get some people who cross the line with privacy, but it’s so up in the air anyway with the internet now and all that. But it’s something I think most people don’t do in a sinister way right now. I don’t think our fans are out to hurt us. J: We don’t have the John Lennon fans yet. A: There have been a few instances that surprised us, but it’s been a learning experience for us and for them. JAYE: So if you weren’t the hip, talented guys of All Time Low, what would you be doing at this point in your life? J: I’d probably be studying business at Towson University in Maryland, which is the only college I applied to. A: I honestly don’t know. It
sounds trite, but I really didn’t plan for anything else but this. J: We got signed in high school, and while other people were doing college visits, we were touring. A: Everybody else was setting themselves up for college— they were going through the steps, going through the motions—but we were going through the motions to do this. We were visiting labels and touring as much as possible. We were meeting bands, meeting producers, and essentially busting our asses in that sense. And even though academically, our teachers were telling us we weren’t doing anything to set ourselves up, we were. It was just not the typical path. J: Thank God it worked out. ■

JAYE Because College is More than the Classroom
January 2011
Fresh Start
■ Before you turn to pen and paper and jot down a log of quixotic resolutions, take a step back and realize prosperity, in the sartorial sense, at least, is only a few a steps away. For starters, we’ve culled the spring collections to bring you the ten trends that you’ll be excited about in the months to come. The JAYE fashion team’s knees were weakened when we saw the arresting stripes, dazzling colors and modest silhouettes that dominated the runways, but before we got ahead of ourselves, we turned our attention the resort shows and put together a handy package of stylish looks to transition you into the new season. Lastly, our cover girl Lauren Felix chats with us about her blog, La Petite Fashionista, her plans after college and what’s she’s looking forward to on the fashion scene in the months to come. It’s a happy new year indeed!

Designers like Marc Jacobs were obsessed with the seventies this season. Think wide-leg pants, arm-baring tops and platform sandals, which create an effortless look perfect for class or a night out. 88 JANUARY 2011 jaye.com
Bold is better, says the gospel according to Raf Simons at Jil Sander, who sent models sauntering down the runway in brilliantly colored striped gowns that 86’d the sleeves and grazed the floor.
You can’t help but love how Gucci’s Frida Giannini threw caution to the wind, in favor of what we’ve coined as “suits that aren’t suits”: Bright separates that can be color-blocked to create a fresh take on a classic.
ew season has something for everyone
Hemlines collapsed to below the knee at Louis Vuitton, but when you’re exposing your neck and anchoring the look in wrap-around sandals, femininity is preserved and style isn’t compromised.
White isn’t so severe when it’s rendered in loose-fitting silhouettes like we saw at Dolce & Gabanna. The key is to keep accessories to a minimum and to look for pieces that compliment your skin tone.
The lace trend’s still holding strong. The look, shown at Valentino, is perfect for the sophisticate averse to the dazzling colors of the season and the maxilength shapes of warmweather frocks. 90 JANUARY 2011 jaye.com
Take a page from Ralph Lauren, the king of laidback cool, and cinch your spacious dresses with western-inspired belts to add an unexpected twist to what some would consider an anythingbut-casual silhouette.
Imagine yourself strolling through the student union in a head-to-toe intense hue, like this tangerine-tinged orange courtesy of Paul & Joe. You’ll be the style star of the campus, and deservedly so.
Channel your inner grunge girl and opt for layers of black and white staples — or incorporate one piece, like a hardcore vest. We loved Nicolas Ghesquière’s interpretation at Balenciaga.
Abstract animal prints are a welcome departure from the precise execution of the look for fall. We’re loving this dress done beautifully by Anna Molinari at Blumarine and can’t wait to try it ourselves.

The Trend: Mixed Prints What to remember: The secret is to choose contrasting prints, but in the same color family. And don’t forget: two prints per outfit. What to invest in: Serious staples in feminine silhouettes with eye-catching prints with mixand-match potential. If you opt for neon prints, steer clear of youthful shapes that lessen the trends glam factor. How to wear it: Nonchalantly combine skirts and tops with buys patterns and bring them together with black accessories and a stack of bracelets. Stick to towering heels and quality bags — they lend a polished sensibility to the playful trend.

or girls like Lauren Felix, it’s easy to find inspiration when you’re surrounded by it day in and out. “Being a fashion major has its perks when everyone dresses up for class,” the 21-year-old fashion merchandising major at Florida State University says. “I follow a ton of blogs, and love street style!” Despite her age, Felix is a pioneer of sorts—she started her blog, La Petite Fashionista, in 2007 when there weren’t many fashion bloggers on the scene “to make fashion fun, unpretentious, and accessible for everyone,” a concept that for all intents and purposes seems to be the reason why this industry has boomed over the last few years. Felix explains, “Bloggers give some street cred to companies—I’m ten times more likely to notice something if I see it on one of my favorite fashion bloggers than if it’s just sitting on the ecommerce page. It makes the products more personal.” And brands have struck gold with girls like Lauren who possess a mix of enchanting beauty, an unas-
suming voice and an ability to compel their readers to think outside fashion’s proverbial box and have fun with style, no matter your budget, body type of lifestyle. Readers find themselves stopping by to scan through Felix’s posts, chock-full of exclamation points, insanely cute graphics with options to create her looks and easy-to-identify tabs with labels like “Outfits,” “Trends,” and “Inspiration.” “I don’t think anyone expected blogging to become such a powerful force, myself included, especially in the fashion realm,” admits Felix, who counts Casey at the Classic Case (www.theclassiccase.com) Taylor at Sterling Style (www.sterlingstyle.net), and Alicia at Cheetah is the New Black (www.cheetahisthenewblack.com) as a few of favorite online destinations. She’s quick to acknowledge that running a blog, while balancing work and school isn’t child’s play. “Blogging can be like a second job sometimes; the time aspect is definitely the toughest part.” But it’s worth it, she says, because of “the community of fashion bloggers that exists, and all the

Steal their style:
■ Tweed Indeed. Kate Moss updates black jeans with a superchic tweed jacket and booties. Swap out the pants for a pencil skirt to create an easy work outfit. ■ Turn to eye-catching textures. Sometimes it’s tough to wear sequins head-to-toe, but take a page from Emmy Rossum’s style handbook and wear a sassier version of the little black dress or add some glitz to jeans and a T-shirt with a sequined clutch. ■ Catch a case of the blues. Inject your wardobe with a dose of color, as Molly Sims shows, with a cobalt, loose-fitting tunic or dress. Keep the look from veering too youthful by sticking to sophisticated black extras. ■ In the trenches. Trench coats are the perfect transitional piece to keep you in style and covered up until the temps rise. An instant update: Wear yours as a dress, as style star Emma Watson does with her Burberry trench.
