Letter from the Editor

Hello,

November was quite a busy time for all of us. There were midterms, Thanksgiving break, and so many events. November 3rd to the 5th was particularly busy because we had four events in just one weekend. Members took part in Relay for Life, the Melanoma Walk, the Celtic Festival, and the beloved Dogtoberfest. Additionally, there was a stargazing social and a holiday potluck. As this semester comes to an end, I think about everything we’ve accomplished as a club and the fun times I’ve had with all of you. Looking ahead, we have so many events coming up in the next semester, and we also have DCON in February. I hope you all have a rich winter break and I look forward to hearing about the fun things you all have done when I see you in the new year! With kindest regards, Jessica Beauvais Bulletin Editor 2017-2018 P.S. A four word poem: Fall semester was siick

Letter from the President Hello everyone, What a semester it has been! Because November is the month of giving thanks, I want to thank you all for your participation throughout the semester and the month. The first weekend of November was our crazy weekend and those of you who came to Relay for life, the Melanoma Walk, Celtic Festival, and Dogtoberfest were awesome! That weekend had a lot of events and each one was great to participate in! We had a lot of breaks in November so we ended up making due with some stargazing, which ended up being a fun social! Finally came our last meeting on the last day of November with a potluck and a Secret Santa! It was great finishing up November with all your wonderful faces! Over the holidays if you are unsure what you want for Christmas, definitely ask for donations towards St. Baldrick’s, it is a great cause and a great way to make an impact with our district fundraiser. Also, heads up, next semester will be multiple new events including the district service project in January in Snowflake, Arizona as well as club elections and DCON in Phoenix, Arizona, both in February! Again, Thank you so much and Happy Holidays! I will see you on Thursdays next semester! Yours in Service, Chantel Leon Circle K International President

Relay for Life Relay for life is an event that we participate in every year. Relay for life is not only an important fundraiser from the American Cancer Society for cancer research, but also an opportunity to remember those lost to cancer and honor cancer survivors. While this event has typically been held in the spring on the UA campus, this year it was moved to the fall semester. We had several members attend and walk laps in honor of those who have been affected by cancer, as well as their families. We were also able to sell a few of our snack bags in order to raise money for cancer research. Overall, Relay for Life is highly regarded and the members of CKI are always supportive and love volunteering at this event.

Melanoma Walk This year was the 8th annual Melanoma Walk! The Melanoma Walk, which is put on by the Skin Cancer Institute, is another event that we participate in every year, especially because our very own president, Chantel Leon, has been part of this event from the time she was young. Like Relay for Life, the Melanoma Walk is a fundraiser in which people walk and raise money to contribute to melanoma research, and also raise awareness for skin protection. As volunteers, our members helped direct people, sell raffle tickets, and assisted the photographer. The people who organized this event were very appreciative of our volunteer time.

Tucson Celtic Festival This is the second year that or club was able to help with the Tucson Celtic Festival. The Celtic Festival is an annual event in which people in Tucson are able to celebrate their Celtic heritage with different booths, food, and games. Those who organize this event were so enamored with our volunteer work that we did last year that they asked us to come back and help again! This time, members from UA CKI helped with the kids’ highland games, as well as selling tickets for entry. Both our CKI members and the people of Tucson really enjoy this festival and I anticipate that we’ll be volunteering here again many more times to come.

Dogtoberfest Ironically in November, Dogtoberfest is one of UA CKI’s most favorite events to participate in. This was also our second year volunteering here. Dogtoberfest is so much fun because so many people from around Tucson bring their dogs to walk around, see the booths, and play games. Members spent their time helping attendees with parking, helping at the different dog events such as the agility course and hotdog bobbing, and they even got to make dog-tinis. Everyone loved seeing all the different dogs congregated in one area, it was definitely time well spent. Additionally, the people at Dogtoberfest loved having us and we will absolutely be returning to this event every year from now on.
