Letter from the Editor

Hey y’all!

In this issue, there is information about our past service events such as relay for life, Ronald McDonald house, Kiwanis de Amigos relay, and helping out at Sunrise Elementary school. In addition, there is a small segment about CLE and what’s to come. As for intra-club news, I am your new bulletin editor for the 2017-2018 term! I am so excited to be a part of this wonderful U of A CKI board and I know that it is going to be a great time. Over the course of this year, I have met so many amazing people and I’ve crafted new friendships that mean so much to me. In addition, I’ve had many valuable experiences that I get to brag about to all my non-CKI friends. I love spending time with everyone doing service events or at socials and I enjoy getting to know everybody. This has been a fantastic year of service and we even won an award at DCON for our service hours (are we surprised?!). Although summer is coming and we will be apart, I will continue to think of all of you and I look forward to next year! I’m also excited to recruit new members and have our CKI friend circle grow. Yours in Service, Jessica Beauvais Bulletin Editor 2017-2018

Letter from the (new) President Z

Hey everyone!

What a month we’ve had! April 1st was the first day of the official CKI New Year which means a shiny new board! I was honored when elected and honored now! Within April we have had over 100 service hours among our club plus a fundraiser and social. I am your new club President for the 2017-2018 year and am so excited to be able to play a larger role in the club. I have loved this club and so many people in it since I started and was last year’s U of A bulletin editor because of that. This club has played such a large role in my experience at the U of A and I am excited to be adding to the experience of new and old members alike. I wish you the best luck on the upcoming finals! Yours in service, Chantel Leon President 2017-2018

Member of the Month! Our member of the month is Leslie Lopez! Leslie is one of our seniors and we are sad to see her leave, but she has been a great member of CKI and has come to so many events! She’s smart, hardworking, and so fun to be around and always has a smile on her face! Congratulations and we will miss you, Leslie!

Kiwanis de Amigos Relay This was our first event of April and I’m proud to say that we had quite a few members attend. Some of us got a little sunburned, but that’s okay because we still had fun helping with the track and field events such as long jump, high jump, and various races. We got to time the races and keep track of who came in what place, although all the participants deserved awards for their amazing abilities! We spent a lot of time volunteering at the relay and we all had fun during the event watching the races, and after when we helped clean up. Helping kids is truly one of our greatest joys and knowing that we have made an impact means a lot to everyone in CKI.

Relay for Life (Parts 1 & 2) Unfortunately, the U of A relay for life was moved to fall 2017, so we were not able to participate as per usual. That also means some of us still have yet to meet Tasty Freeze. However, we were still able to participate in not one, but two Relays in which the money we raised went to supporting the American Cancer Society. So many of us have been affected or know people who have been affected by cancer, so it is really special that we were able to take part in both the Relay in Sahuarita and the Relay in Glendale. In addition, both relays went really well and we had some quality club bonding. As for Tasty Freeze, we will have to wait until November to be graced with her presence.

Ronald McDonald House Ronald McDonald house is an event that we tend to do a lot, and this month we were able to go twice. Not only does cooking allow us to let our creative juices flow, but we are able to provide families with a warm, home cooked meal during their stay. We made brunch with Kiwanians on one Saturday morning, and we also made a stir fry, which received high marks according to the families and staff of the Ronald McDonald House. We are always happy to help and, although we return quite often, it’s always a new experience and our members really enjoy this event. Those who participated did such a great job representing our club and we are lucky to have them!

Sunrise Elementary School As previously stated, the members of U of A CKI lover interacting with younger kids and helping out whenever possible. Working with children is always so fun and this event was no different. Our members got to help out at the Sunrise elementary book fair and display, and we got to meet so many wonderful children and see their artwork, as well. The people putting on this event were so thankful that we were able to come, and that really means a lot to us. Overall, our members and the people of the elementary school had a great time and we loved attending this event!

Other News CLE was this month and we were lucky enough to have two of our board members attend. We were able to connect with some of the other board members that we aren’t always able to see, and we also learned a new chant: “Dang Horse, you’re so spicy, make this Southwest District feisty! My my CKI, raise your hooves up to the sky!”

In addition, we recently had our pass-down banquet where the old board members inducted the new members and we got to look back on our past year of service. We had a potluck, looked at pictures, and many of our members received awards from our retiring president, Michael Zimmerman. U of A CKI thanks Michael for being such a fantastic president for the last two years and welcomes Chantel Leon as the club’s new president.

Our end-of-year social was also one of this month’s main events. Even though only a few of our club’s shining stars appeared, we had such a fun time grilling by the pool, talking about our favorite TV shows, and playing badminton in the volleyball sand. For those that attended, they will receive extra points for being good club members; for those that did not attend, you missed out on a really fun time.

Don’t forget to register for CKIx! This year, CKIx will be held in San Antonio, Texas from July 5-8 Don’t miss out on this great opportunity! For more information, go to: http://www.circlek.org/Leadership/Conventions/Internation alConvention/CKIx.aspx

A Letter from one of our Members Ever since I was younger, I knew I wanted to be a part of this organization. Nothing compares to the service that we do and I knew from the beginning that Kiwanis is what I want to do for the rest of my life. Circle K gives me an opportunity to help others who can’t help themselves, even if it’s spending a weekend volunteering. I am so proud of the growth that we have made as a club and the connections that I have established, and nothing makes me feel more grateful than knowing that every small contribution that we make to the community leaves a lasting impact on the people who we help. I could not to ask for an organization that knows service, fellowship, and leadership more than Circle K!

-Lizzie Quinlan

As for our what’s to come, the semester is ending and so, too is our year of service. Our last service-related topic is our Saver’s fundraiser happening May 6th in which all the proceeds of the items donated goes towards the U of A CKI. Otherwise, that wraps it up for this year and on behalf of our board, I would like to congratulate you all for making it through yet another school year and I hope you all have a great summer! See you next time!
