August-September

Is summer getting shorter and shorter every year? I am not ready for Lilette to head back to school. I enjoy having her home for the summer. She is always close by listening to my work calls or asking me business and personal questions while I am working. With school comes all of the activities she enjoys, and I love being there to watch her, but nothing beats the summer days when we have nothing to do but ride the golf cart around, swim, play games and chat.

Inside New Orleans Scoop shows all of the upcoming events, festivals, galas and football games right around the corner. Inside New Orleans has formed media partnerships with some amazing local nonprofit organizations. I have always enjoyed promoting and attending events to meet new people and help support local businesses and nonprofits.

I am pleased to present 2023 Elite Lawyers Readers Results, Rocking Real Estate, Women’s Health and 2023 Home and Garden Readers Favorites.

I am very excited for White Linen Night and our cover artist, Cathy Trione, at Degas Gallery on Saturday, August 5th. There is no coincidence that our cover includes white roses. We hope to see you there!

Greetings, Readers

I am humbled to be a part of the Inside New Orleans family, and I’m eager to collaborate with our talented team and contributors to bring you a magazine that informs, entertains, and inspires.

Capturing the Perfect Symphony of Line and Color

LOCAL TALENTED AND ACCOMPLISHED artist Cathy Trione embarked on her artistic journey against a backdrop of creative inspiration and nurturing. “Even as a small child,” Cathy notes, “I was intense about my artwork.” In later years, she found herself fortunate to be part of an exceptional art department at Archbishop Toolen High School in Mobile. The department provided a fertile ground for exploring and appreciating contemporary art. The influence of one particular nun, who had worked with renowned artist, Sister Corita Kent, encouraged Cathy in artistic expression. This formative experience laid the foundation for Cathy’s artistic growth and experimentation. In her senior year, Cathy received recognition for her exceptional talent and was honored with Mobile’s Genevieve Sutherland Art Award. Cathy explains that it was a surprising accolade considering her chosen medium—a watercolor, pure abstraction adorned with the inscription “Dostoevsky” in India ink. Cathy’s deep immersion in the works of Dostoevsky that year exemplified her intense commitment to abstraction. The 1960s, marked by the rise of influential artists like Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns, infused Cathy’s artistic journey. It was a time of expressive revolution, and Cathy Trione’s trajectory as an artist was only beginning to blossom amidst this exhilarating era.

As Cathy entered college, she pursued a double major in history and philosophy at Spring Hill College. During her time there, she took several

12 Inside New Orleans

courses under the guidance of Paul Anthony Feldhaus. An esteemed printmaker and art department chair at the time, Feldhaus’s expertise and passion for art left a lasting impression on Cathy. She recalls a particular day in class when Feldhaus called art “enriching a surface.” This idea resonated deeply with her then and now. Feldhaus currently has three pieces of his engraved work in the National Gallery’s permanent collection. Incidentally, as Cathy graduated from Spring Hill, local artist Jim Richard arrived as a new instructor.

In 1970, Cathy’s path led her to New Orleans, where she enrolled at Tulane University to pursue a graduate degree in philosophy. Balancing her diverse range of interests and later the responsibilities as the mother of four children, Cathy embraced a career as a librarian. This role allowed her to indulge in her passion for knowledge as she worked as a generalist in local libraries for over three decades. Throughout her career, Cathy has never let go of her artistic pursuits, consistently drawing and painting as a personal expression.

In the early 2000s, Cathy reignited her commitment to painting, taking it more seriously than ever before. Drawn to the physicality of paint and captivated by the vibrant allure of color. Cathy says, “Color itself inspires. I want to be a Fauve.” A bold palette, unwavering focus on design, and the placement of color are essential to Cathy, but there is also the line. Cathy details this by explaining, “A recent work on Prudhon refers to the ‘elusive line’ in art. That is what I look for - the elusive line.” Finding inspiration in the elusive nature of line in art, Cathy seeks its captivating presence within her work.

When approaching a new painting, Cathy’s meticulous attention to detail shines through. She draws and calculates the placement of objects, often entering

the creative process with a specific palate in mind. Working swiftly to establish the initial design, she likes to keep a continuous flow until she feels a sense of satisfaction with the painting’s direction.

Cathy sometimes paints on-site, immersing herself in the surroundings, but she also uses photographs as references, finding inspiration in the scenes captured through a lens. The Magnolia featured in her upcoming show is from a photo she took at Audubon Park. Also featured in her upcoming show is a painting with women working in a cane field. Cathy created the pastoral piece after contemplating the 1890s photograph Cutting Sugar Cane in Louisiana by William Henry Jackson.

“Can an artist work and live in the Deep South and not be drawn to botanicals?”

Cathy is specifically referring to New Orleans, “a garden,” she calls it. Living in New Orleans she encounters captivating shapes and

forms in nature at every turn. Recently, her artistic exploration has gravitated towards the enchanting allure of allées. Her own contribution to the allée theme, displayed in the exhibition, is an oil painting based on a photograph from Guion’s exquisite book, Quercus Louisiana: the Splendid Live Oaks of Louisiana. The photograph she uses is from Greenwood Plantation.

In her ongoing artistic journey, Cathy Trione’s commitment to painting, her deep connection to the physicality of the medium, and her homage to color and design continue to guide her. In the future, Cathy anticipates creating more family portraits and focusing on recapturing the abstraction that was such a part of her childhood.

Cathy Trione’s exhibition opening will be at White Linen Night on August 5th at The Degas Gallery, 604 Julia Street, New Orleans. For more information visit thedegasgallery.com

Lakeview Day-to-Night

WHEN I FIRST DISCOVERED LAKEVIEW in the 1990s, Harrison Avenue was central to this neighborhood — but a lot quieter than it is now. There was a Landry’s (not the chain), a great place to get plate lunches, Charlie’s Deli, and Coffee & Company. John Jay was where women got their hair cut, and Lakeview Fine Foods kept everyone making groceries.

Lakeview was hard hit by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 when the area had extensive flooding and damage due to the collapse of the 17th Street Canal. Fortunately, this great area was rebuilt and, in the past ten years or so, has blossomed — with Harrison Avenue once again its hub.

Before a day-to-night trip through Lakeview, the area’s boundaries must be defined, and the City Planning Commission is the place to do so. Thus, according to the CPC, Lakeview boundaries are Allen Toussaint Boulevard to the North, Pontchartrain

Boulevard to the West, Orleans Avenue to the East, and Florida Boulevard/Canal Boulevard. These boundaries do, however,  exclude some beloved restaurants and stores.

GOOD MORNING LAKEVIEW!

There are several homegrown businesses in Lakeview, so let’s start the day at NOLA Beans, a coffee shop that is an A.M. hub for those who need to wake up and also start the day with breakfast or lunch.

Another great place to start one’s day is Another Broken Egg Cafe.  Serving a hearty morning and brunch fare, they also have an amazing array of specialty Bloody Marys.

A little later, working some of those calories off is easy — and convenient — at The Barre Code, combining cardio and strength training for an efficient workout.

It’s about time to go shopping, and if there is >> Lakeview Grocery.

August-September 2023 19

one place that offers everything in one spot, it is  Little Miss Muffin. This store is another old-school Lakeview establishment. Founded in 1970 across the street from where it is currently, the store was originally a  Hallmark/Russell Stover Candy store. It expanded through the years and briefly stopped on Metairie Road before returning to its Lakeview roots. Monique Duclaux, the granddaughter of the original owner, has created a shopping oasis that sells gifts, baby and children’s clothing, women’s clothing and shoes, men’s polo shirts (take a look at the ones by Whearable Art!), Bonfolk socks, jewelry, stationary from Alexa Pulitzer as well as the works of local artists. You would be hard-pressed not to find what you want at Little Miss Muffin!

20 Inside New Orleans
The Barre Code.

IT’S TIME FOR LUNCH!

Lakeview has no shortage of places to dine or snack, including Francesca, from the folks at Katie’s, so expect the same food quality. The menu includes hearty deli-style sandwiches and New Orleans favorites, such as muffulettas, po-boys, burgers, salads, pizzas, and daily specials. You may even get a chance to visit with friends and watch a baseball game on TV!

Junior’s on Harrison calls itself a “strangely familiar neighborhood joint,” and it lives up to its name. Dishes get intriguing twists, such as Gail’s spicy chicken sandwich with American cheese, pickles, spicy mayonnaise, and served with French fries. Junior’s also has daily specials and Sunday brunch.

If you need groceries, it is time to make some groceries at Lakeview Grocery, where you can stock up on essentials, or if you have to head back home or the office, it offers quite a nice salad/food bar for a quick bite. Next door is Harrison Cove, offering a casual place to sit down for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Post-lunch afternoons call for relaxation and rejuvenation. A unique newcomer to the area is The Gallery Salon & Spa, which opened in 2017.

“We wanted a place of wellness and creativity that supports local artists and helps the community, plus, it was a dream of mine to have my own art gallery,” says Renee Gautreaux, who is also the owner of Acadiana Custom Photography. >>

August-September 2023 21
Junior’s on Harrison.

The salon and spa provide massages, facials, pedicures, manicures, full body waxing with wax made for sensitive skin, hair care, waves, color, and event styling, including bridal.

“My staff is amazing at what they do! My master stylists especially: one is from London and the other from Chicago. They really know their craft,” says Gautreaux.

AND INTO THE NIGHT

No conversation can be held about Lakeview unless grand dame or Granddaddy, whichever you prefer, is mentioned: The

Steak Knife. Open for at least 40 years, it is a hub, hotspot, you name it. This iconic Lakeview eatery wouldn’t have remained here for so long if it wasn’t for the food. Its famed steaks: filet mignon, prime ribeye, and prime New York strip are delicious. Couple one of their hearty steaks with the traditional fixings, and you will not be

Swoon.

disappointed. The Steak Knife also features seafood gumbo and smoked salmon for those who want to surf rather than turf.

Emerging as an alternative hotspot is the Velvet Cactus, where the Margarita and Mexican food reign. The people behind this spot just opened Outpost 45, which offers interesting variations on traditional favorites, such as their Muffuletta egg rolls and fried ribs. The large bar offers craft cocktails such as Twerk the French and Strawberry Fields Forever, among other aperitifs, so it is perfect for cocktail hour.

It’s time to head home, but there is one last stop just off Harrison: The Creole Creamery. A scoop of café au lait ice cream is the perfect way to end your day and night in Lakeview.

Exploring the Impact of Four Local Lawyers

MANY EXCEPTIONAL LAWYERS have emerged in the legal landscape of New Orleans and the surrounding area specializing in specific areas of expertise. In this “Elite Lawyers” issue, Inside New Orleans features the profiles of four notably talented local attorneys: Jason Waguespack, Charles “Chuck” Cusimano, III, Lacy Smith, and Sean Mount.

Charles “Chuck” Cusimano, III

During his senior year at Texas A&M, Chuck found himself at a crossroads because, unlike his friends, he had zero interest in working for Enron and wasn’t ready to tackle the real world. Thus, he enrolled in LSU Paul M. Hebert School of Law to prolong the real world a little longer.

As it happened, practicing law was perfect for Chuck.

“My passion for my law profession can be summed up by my professor’s parting words on my last day of law school.  He reminded us that with our law degree, we possess the

knowledge and ability to do good by helping people with their legal challenges.”   These words resonate most deeply with Chuck when a client reaches out to him seeking assistance.

After completing his law degree in 2003, Chuck dedicated four formative years of his career to the Jefferson Parish District Attorney’s office, where he gained invaluable experience and honed his legal skills. The insights and expertise he acquired during this period served as the foundation for the establishment of Cusimano Law Firm in 2007.

Cusimano Law Firm is a civil litigation practice that takes immense pride in providing clients with compassionate and dedicated legal assistance. Their primary focus lies in offering support and guidance to individuals facing personal injury cases, contract disputes, and successions, recognizing the significant impact these matters can have on their lives. Chuck adds, “Navigating

26 Inside New Orleans

the legal system can be overwhelming and emotional for many. I enjoy providing my clients some peace of mind when they trust me to handle their legal issues.” Chuck’s driving force stems from a blend of compassion for his clients and a true appreciation for the competitive nature of the legal profession. This combination fuels his motivation to pursue the best outcome for his clients.

In the face of diverse and challenging civil litigation cases, Chuck and his colleagues remain steadfast in their commitment to their clients. Their shared sense of purpose, coupled with the genuine bonds they have formed, fuels their collective resolve to navigate the intricacies of the legal system to bring about positive outcomes for those they serve.

The only genuine stress in his life, says Chuck, “is in trying to properly raise my three children.” By his side, however, is his wife Gabrielle, who, as Chuck puts it, “does the lion’s share of that.” Ever the devoted family man, Chuck recently coached his daughter’s 5-6-year-olds softball team. That day, everyone walked away with a trophy!

In the hands of devoted and compassionate attorney Charles “Chuck” Cusimano, III, clients can find a sense of relief, knowing they have an unwavering advocate who will stand by their side, fight for their rights, and ensure their voices are heard.

Sean Mount

Sean Mount’s interest in becoming an attorney stemmed from the realization that the law’s extensive influence was evident in nearly every aspect of life; he was fascinated with this notion. However, what truly captivated him was the chance to thoroughly explore and address a specific issue or matter and ultimately find a successful resolution. As a litigator who primarily handles insurance defense and analysis, that zeal to find a positive solution for his client empowers him to effectively represent clients in insurance-related cases. For twenty-two years, his motivation to ensure that the interests of his clients are protected and their rights upheld has been the driving force in Sean’s career.

Sean finds the most rewarding aspect of practicing law is watching and sustaining a case as it evolves from issue to trial to verdict. Further, he adds, “ I am a very competitive person, which is always a component within the context of litigation.” Sean has been recognized as one of the Best Lawyers in America since 2019 thanks to his strong litigation competitiveness and determination to achieve the best outcome for his clients. He has also received the prestigious AV Preeminent Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review Rating.

As a lawyer, Sean genuinely appreciates being involved in the continuous development of the law.  He explains, “In other words, whenever we can have an effect on how a statute or code article is interpreted for the betterment of future cases is always something I relish.”

On a personal note, a Jesuit and LSU graduate, Sean attended law school at the Paul M. Hebert Law Center at LSU.  When he needs to escape the stresses of litigation, he recharges by spending time with his wife and two sons. Lacy

Smith

Family law and divorce attorney Lacy Smith was drawn to the profession due to her interest in problem-solving and dispute resolution. Lacy emphasizes, “I’m not interested in having the catfight. Instead, I enjoy brainstorming how to address the situation and helping clients navigate their transition from one season of life to the next.”  She is passionate about conflict resolution as the way to assist her clients, despite her parents’ belief that she became an attorney because, growing up, she always loved to argue.  >>

Lacy’s practice is dedicated exclusively to divorce and family law. Although she mainly uses mediation, collaborative divorce, and similar settlement methods, she notes, “I also have a passion for litigating complex property division issues in the context of community property partition.” Lacy understands the importance of giving each client a safe and compassionate environment to seek legal assistance. As such, she ardently provides legal services to the LGBTQIA+ community. Her door is open for all legal assistance,  whether intrafamily adoption, a name change, or legal counseling for divorce, no matter who they are.  Her blend of litigation skills and exceptional expertise in mediation makes her a formidable force in resolving disputes efficiently and effectively for her clients.

Choosing to practice divorce and family law was a natural choice for Lacy, as it allows her to form connections with her clients, which is important to her. Getting to know her clients and their families on a personal level is an aspect of her profession that she sees as a privilege and finds extremely rewarding. Equally rewarding is the opportunity to help her clients determine their wants and needs and ultimately find creative solutions. Resolving the life-changing conflicts of her clients is something that Lacy has tackled for more than thirteen years with genuine compassion.

Being a lawyer, says Lacy, “Lets me flex a variety of muscles and that no day is like another.” Being the sole practitioner in her firm, she is not only the lawyer but also runs the business, including the accounting, networking, and web design when the need arises. For some people, it may seem like a burden, but for Lacy, she adds, “I enjoy wearing those different hats.”

Maintaining balance in her life is key for Lacy and how she manages her career’s pressures and stress. Her balance includes spending time with her family, working out a few times a week, and getting the right amount of sleep. “And,” she emphasizes, “if all else fails, I manage stress by playing roller derby with New Orleans’ own roller derby team, Big Easy Roller Derby.”

Lacy’s talent for problem-solving and multifaceted abilities, >>

including her compassion for everyone, ability to wear many hats, and roller derby status, make her a true modern-day Renaissance woman.

Jason Waguespack

Jason Waguespack’s journey into law was inspired by his mother’s profound influence during high school. As a teenager, he watched his mother pursue her law degree. Observing her passion and fulfillment in the face of challenging coursework, Jason felt a growing desire to study law himself. Thus, he enrolled in Tulane University School of Law after receiving his undergraduate degree.

Taking advantage of Tulane being the preeminent US law school in maritime and admiralty law, Jason enrolled in maritime law classes, and as his interest grew, he became more invested in that area of law and eager to immerse himself in its complexities. After law school, he was hired by a firm that gave him the opportunity to practice maritime law, the specialty he has practiced for thirty-two years.

Practicing within his realm of expertise, Jason enjoys the global dimension of maritime law, particularly the chance to travel internationally and engage with people from diverse cultures while catering to clients. Additionally, he appreciates the high standard of professionalism among the legal practitioners in the New Orleans maritime bar, an organization renowned nationally for its expertise and contributions to the field. Over the past three decades, Jason has honed his maritime and admiralty law expertise and adds, “I love it and wouldn’t want to practice in any other area.”

Jason’s commitment to the legal field extends beyond his personal career endeavors. He is an adjunct faculty member at the Tulane University A.B. Freeman School of Business and the Tulane University School of Law. In this role, he recognizes the significance of providing comprehensive support and strongly advocates preparing students with the necessary education, mentorship, and training to succeed in their chosen fields. Knowing the power of guidance, he tries to mentor multiple students each year, going above and beyond by offering them opportunities to work at his firm. By showing them the practicalities of the legal profession, he provides invaluable

experience and offers insightful guidance to help shape their future careers.

Jason considers himself fortunate to work with exceptional colleagues and friends. He counts on them to help with work-related stress. Their perspectives, advice, and creative ideas consistently prove invaluable in navigating issues. These often stressful issues can sometimes take a funny turn, leading to shared laughter which Jason contends “always makes you feel better.” Also providing him the opportunity to take a break from the legal world, Jason sits on various local boards, such as The Ogden Museum of Southern Art. He enjoys this change of pace and is honored to serve on the board of these organizations.

Finally, Jason takes pride in the honors he has received over the years. Among those honors, he was given The Project Lazarus Angel Award, the Human Rights Campaign Equality Award, and the Forum on Equality Chair’s Award. He also received the Paul Plauche Award from Halloween New Orleans. He is most proud, however, to have served as the New Orleans Bar Association President from 2018-2019.

With his passion for maritime law, years of experience, and dedication to mentoring future legal professionals, Jason Wagespack is a testament to the power of inspiration, commitment, and the pursuit of excellence in his field.

The Historic New Orleans Collection

THE HISTORIC NEW ORLEANS COLLECTION is excited to play host to the highly anticipated Smithsonian Exploration of “American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith” thru October 8th. This thought-provoking exhibit brings an immersive and enlightening experience that delves into the rich history and often challenging workings of American democracy.

As American history teaches, the brave colonists made the great leap from a government ruled by the silencing and greedy Crown to the notion that liberty

could be theirs. Although the Patriots were deemed the apparent underdog, victory would be theirs, offering them all that freedom would give, but not for every citizen. The journey for American democracy that merely began with the Revolution continues today through debate, protest, compromise, and a display of genuine grit for American citizens. “American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith” is an analysis of this: past, present, and future.

For this engaging exploration, visitors can expect an unprecedented

opportunity to engage with the profound story of the democratic system of the United States. The cornerstone of examining the origins of American democracy includes the evolution of the right to vote, electoral systems, political parties, government institutions, legal framework, civil society, and the constitutional framework. Just as crucial to the logistics of the voting machine and a key element of the Democracy exhibit is the origin and significance of the right to petition and protest beyond the ballot and the rights and responsibilities of citizens.

Through a diverse range of captivating images, objects, thought-provoking narratives, and engaging exhibits offering multimedia experiences and immersive design, visitors are provided with a transformative and engaging experience that fosters a deeper connection to the subject matter; these learning devices will make the visit more meaningful and impactful.

The Historic New Orleans Collection continues to exhibit “Yet She Is Advancing: New Orleans Women and the Right to Vote, 1878-1970” as a companion exhibit to  “American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith,” offering an even deeper perspective on the local pursuit of democracy, not just for some, but all.

Join THNOC as they invite everyone to embark on this enlightening journey, gaining fresh insights and a deeper appreciation for the foundations and evolution of democracy in America.

Traveling Cocktail Series

Emerald Coast, Florida

I TRULY ENJOY TRAVELING and exploring the cocktail scene at each destination. Recently, I visited Sandestin, Rosemary Beach, and Miramar, Florida.

In Sandestin, I tried a lot of the new handcrafted cocktails at Poppy’s Crazy Lobster, which has a new menu that includes Southern Fried Lobster & Waffles, Lobster Fire Tacos, and Lobster Ravioli Buerre Blanc. My favorite cocktail at Poppy’s was the Basic Beach, a play on an espresso martini. I also enjoyed a Tequila On a Boat. Create this spicy and refreshing drink with the following steps.

TEQUILA ON A BOAT

2oz YaVe Jalapeno Tequila

1⁄2 oz ounce fresh lime juice

1⁄2 oz Agave Syrup

Floater Gran Gala

Fresh Jalapeno

Salt Rim

Lime Wedge

Build a cocktail in a shaker tin, shake, and pour into salt-rimmed rocks or margarita glass. Garnish with a Lime wedge.

Next, we went to Hammerhead’s and listened to live music while enjoying a delicious Bayside Sunset. To make your own, follow the steps listed below.

BAYSIDE SUNSET

1oz Wicked Dolphin Coconut Rum

1oz Skyy Strawberry Vodka

1⁄2 oz peach liqueur

2oz fresh pineapple juice

2oz fresh orange juice

Grenadine floater

Build a cocktail in a shaker tin, shake it, and pour it over an ice-filled hurricane-style glass. Garnish with an orange slice.

HEALTHY PORTIONS MEAL COMPANY was established almost five years ago when owner and creator Chazzie Williams was inspired to help her fitness clients in their quest for optimum fitness, weight loss, and better health. Coupled with her desire to help her clients with healthy food choices, Chazzie, an Italian who loves to express her creativity in her recipes, wanted her healthy food also to be delicious. This concept is the cornerstone of Chazzie’s success. When you get a meal from Healthy Portions, you can expect a dish made with fresh, high-quality, absolutely delicious ingredients.

Healthy Portions Meals are ready-to-go with all the good-for-you components, infused with flavors that make them delicious. These culinary delights include customer favorites such as NOLA-style Barbeque shrimp, pizza with high protein zero net carbs crust, Jalapeno chicken salad, shrimp and cauliflower grits, zero net carb quesadillas, lasagna, grilled chicken wrap, grilled BLT wrap, and even barbeque pulled pork with cauliflower mac and cheese for a taste of a traditional Southern pairing. Chazzie and her staff can do wonders with shrimp scampi and hearts of palm pasta. Eating great food that is also healthy has never been

easier with Healthy Portions.

With a new DIY launch, customers who enjoy preparing their meals can now get the delightful flavors and fresh ingredients Healthy Meals is known for and create their favorite dish at home. The DIY meals contain the same freshly made condiments, including 0 net carbs, gluten-free brown gravy, clean, sugar-free salad dressings, choice of honey Dijon or balsamic vinaigrette, homemade enchilada sauce, homemade barbecue sauce, their proprietary seasoning blend, and solo pizza crusts for home pizza-making.

With Chazzie at the helm, she and her staff prepare all the meals in the state-of-the-art facility in Mandeville, which is also their central store location. Healthy Portions Meals makes eating healthy, tasty meals easy with their many pick-up locations in Metairie, Slidell, LaPlace, Franklinton, and even Lafayette.
