THE LEBAS FAMILY

For Henry and Nicole LeBas, family and a love for life’s finer moments define who they are. Together with their teenage daughter, Ava, and two lively dogs, Dylan and Piper, the family has embraced life in TerraBella, finding the perfect place to call home.

Originally from Lafayette, Henry is an attorney with LeBas Law Offices, APLC, and has spent over 25 years leading the practice based in Lafayette and New Orleans. Before pursuing law at LSU, He served as an officer in the U.S. Army. His military experience helped shape his strong sense of duty and focus, as well as the delicate balance of family and career.

Nicole grew up in Old Metairie and later moved to the Northshore after Hurricane Katrina. She made her mark in the wine industry before staying home and focusing on raising her daughter. A certified sommelier, Nicole’s appreciation for the art of winemaking is second only to her passion for creating a warm and inviting home for her family.

In 2020, the LeBas family found their ideal home in TerraBella. They were drawn to the neighborhood’s distinctive character with its charm, walkability, and welcoming community. Their home, with its Rosemary Beach-inspired design, immediately captured their

Ava, a junior at Archbishop Hannan High School, is a track sprinter who thrives on the camaraderie of her team and the excitement of competition. When not training, she enjoys fishing, shopping, and exploring her future through college visits. Her college interests span the South and as far as New York.

Their idea of the perfect evening is curled up by the fireplace on winter evenings, engrossed in stories. Nicole has even considered starting a TerraBella book club to share her love of reading.

Travel is the cornerstone of the LeBas family’s adventures. Whether they take an annual trip to Rosemary Beach or Destin, explore New York City for games and Broadway, or go on international excursions like their recent journey to Istanbul, Egypt, and London, their appreciation for culture and k

connections to the world is evident. Highlights from their latest trip included marveling at the Sphinx and Pyramids, swimming in the Red Sea, and witnessing the Trooping the Colour in London.

Back home, the LeBas family enjoys the Northshore’s culinary and retail offerings. From savoring meals at local favorites like Tchefuncte’s and Dakota to browsing boutiques like Niche and Menley Rose, they’ve fully embraced supporting local businesses..

ANNIE WHITAKER photography

Business Spotlight

Drawn to art and science from a young age, Annie Whitaker of Annie Whitaker Photography brings a unique blend of passion for science and art to her work.

The birth of her eldest daughter truly ignited her passion for photography when she started taking newborn photos before it was a thing. When her second daughter was born, she knew all too well the fleeting nature of those early years. “I knew the newborn stage would go too fast, the chubby, wobbly legs would thin out and steady too quickly, and the gummy smile would be filled with teeth too soon. And I knew those memories I treasure would slowly fade,” recalls Annie. To document those precious years, Annie says, “I did it in the way I knew best, through photography.”

Photography is not the only skill of Annie’s. She is multifaceted. Transitioning from her academic pursuit of a PhD in Physiology to teaching Biology at St. Scholastica Academy, Annie found a perfect harmony between her love for science and her creative aspirations. Balancing her wife, mother, and educator roles can be tricky. Still, she leans on the devotion and encouragement of her husband, a local contractor, and her two girls, who are her constant inspiration.

With over twenty years of experience, Annie explains, “ I focus on capturing the journey through motherhood. I specialize in maternity, newborns, babies, children, and families.” She fancies herself a baby whisperer, telling moms, “Just bring me the baby, and I can guarantee you beautiful photos.”

What truly distinguishes Annie as a photographer is her ability to infuse her work with emotions, making her photographs genuine and timeless works of art. Her nuanced art approach and her love for vintage aesthetics permeate her portraits with nostalgic charm.

Annie’s studio, nestled on nine picturesque acres in Covington, is the perfect backdrop for her sessions. Offering a personalized experience, she collaborates closely with clients to plan every detail, ensuring each session is tailored precisely to their wants.

From the initial consultation to the final delivery, Annie, with camera in hand and the creativity and determination to make every photograph a work of art, documents stories of growing up and life’s milestones through her lens. For Annie, creating lasting treasures for families to cherish is easy; as she attests, “I truly love what I do.”

BUILDER TIPS from terrabella resident

Essentials to NOT Overlook When Building a Custom Home

Building a custom home can be an exciting experience, allowing homeowners to design a space tailored to their needs, style, and preferences. However, the process involves numerous decisions, some of which can be overlooked. Here are a few of the top things you should not overlook when building a custom home:

1. Soundproofing and Acoustic Insulation

• Most people don’t think much about soundproofing, but poor acoustic insulation can seriously affect your home’s comfort—especially if you have kids, home offices, or noisy neighbors. Cheap soundproofing materials lead to noise transfer between rooms, making it difficult to enjoy peace and quiet. Invest in high-quality acoustic insulation in areas like bedrooms, media rooms, and bathrooms to minimize noise disturbances.

2. Drainage Systems & Grading

• One commonly overlooked aspect of home building is proper drainage and land grading. Poor drainage can lead to water pooling around your foundation, which can cause long-term structural damage. Do not take the cheap route on proper grading, French drains, and other water mitigation systems. Effective drainage systems ensure water is channeled away from your home, protecting it from future damage.

3. Electrical outlets and smart home infrastructure

• It’s easy to think of electrical outlets as a simple

afterthought, but skimping on the quantity and quality can lead to inconvenience and limitations in the future. Plan for enough outlets in all the right places, and consider modern needs like smart home devices, charging stations, and future tech. Install extra outlets in key areas like the kitchen island, bathrooms, and home offices to avoid the hassle of extension cords later.

TERRABELLA FAMILY PET

Rivers Naquin-Butz

Rivers, a very charming Golden Retriever, has been an integral part of the Naquin-Butz family and the TerraBella community for over eight years. Initially part of a litter to be evaluated for therapy work, Rivers was not chosen. While he wasn’t selected for therapy work, fate had a better plan. He joined his new home at six months old, bringing joy and all the love to Donna and Russell, who adore him!

Describing Rivers, Russell says, “He is quintessential golden retriever; honey blond hair, deep brown eyes, lots of smiles.” His personality is a blend of sweetness, loyalty, intelligence, and humor, earning him the affectionate nickname “Velcro Baby” for always staying close to his family. He’s a fun-loving sweetheart who never misses an opportunity to entertain, whether greeting his family with a bow after being left alone or carrying his own leash for a neighborhood stroll.

Donna shares a story about Rivers that highlights his intelligence: “One day, I was loading the car in the garage with some things, and the back door was open. Usually, Rivers will only go through a door if invited. Unbeknownst to me, he did

this time. I left, not knowing he was outside in the alley. When our backdoor neighbor came home, Rivers greeted her in her driveway and led her to our back gate, which was closed, so she could let him in the backyard! He tucked himself safely back there until one of us got home.”

Life with Rivers is full of memorable quirks and routines. He delights in lounging on the porch, greeting passersby, and sunbathing, regardless of the season, to “work on his tan.” He spends three days a week at doggie daycare, fondly called “school.” School is the highlight of Rivers’ week, and his excitement is palpable as he bolts to the car, ready for a day of socializing with his school pals.

Among his toys, Rivers treasures a plush wine bottle gifted by Hope Richard, which he keeps close like a cherished companion. Living his best life, his days are filled with porch hangs, long walks, and moments with his family. Rivers exemplifies the heartwarming bond only a Golden Retriever can offer—a testament to why dogs are called man’s best friend.

HEARTWORM FAQ’S

How do animals get Heartworms?

• Heartworms are contracted through a mosquito bite! Mosquitos inject larvae into the skin, which migrate to the bloodstream and then grow into a full-size worm that likes to live in the heart chambers as well as the lungs.

Can dogs give heartworms to each other?

• No! They have to get it from an individual mosquito.

Can cats get heartworms?

• Yes! We recommend putting all outdoor cats on a flea and HW combo product! Interesting fact: cats can clear a heartworm infection on their own! Proof that cats are from another planet ;)

What’s the BEST Heartworm preventative?

• Any prevention that you give consistently! Dr. Rusty’s favorite is the 12-month-long Proheart shot (Proheart 12), so he doesn’t have to remember a thing! He gives Molly Proheart 12 once a year with her yearly shots!

FOR BUYERS: CAPITALIZE ON SEASONAL ADVANTAGES

1. Less Competition

Fewer buyers are active in the winter, giving you a better chance to negotiate favorable terms.

2. Motivated Sellers

Many winter sellers have pressing reasons to move, which can translate into more flexibility during negotiations.

3. Spot Seasonal Issues

Winter showings can reveal how a home handles colder weather—look for drafty windows, heating efficiency, and insulation quality.

4. Get Pre-Approved Early

The holiday season can slow down the mortgage process, so securing pre-approval ensures you’re ready to act quickly. FOR SELLERS: MAKE YOUR HOME

1. Create a Warm Atmosphere

WINTER-READY

Use cozy touches like soft lighting, warm blankets, and a crackling fireplace to make your home inviting.

2. Maintain Curb Appeal

Keep walkways clear of snow and add simple decorations like evergreens to brighten up the exterior

3. Highlight Energy Efficiency

Show off upgrades like a new HVAC system or extra insulation to appeal to buyers looking for comfort and savings.

4. Price it Right

Winter buyers are serious but selective. Competitive pricing will make your home stand out.

TIPS FOR EVERYONE

• Be Flexible with Showings

Shorter days and busy holiday schedules mean showings might require extra flexibility.

• Understand the Market Winter is slower, but that can be an advantage for buyers and sellers ready to act. Partner with an agent who understands the season’s nuances.

• Prep for Spring

If winter isn’t your ideal time to move, use it to plan. Buyers can save for a down payment, and sellers can tackle repairs or upgrades to hit the ground running in spring.

Winter may seem like a slower season, but it’s full of opportunities for those ready to embrace it. With the right strategy and a knowledgeable agent, you can turn this season into a successful chapter in your real estate journey.

Embracing Inclusion and Fostering ST PAUL’S CORE PACK PROGRAM

Since its founding, St. Paul’s Catholic School has upheld the principles of community, respect, and inclusion. Guided by the foundational objective of “The Lasallian Family,” the school has remained dedicated to embracing diversity and ensuring everyone feels a sense of belonging. In 2017, this commitment took a significant step forward by introducing The Catholic Opportunity for Responsive Education (CORE) program. Created through the efforts of the Archdiocese of New Orleans Office of Catholic Schools, St. Paul’s administrators, teachers, and parents, the initiative has profoundly impacted students with developmental disabilities in a fully

inclusive, faith-driven environment and given extraordinary possibilities.

Students in the CORE Pack have opportunities to grow socially, spiritually, and academically while fully integrating into school life. This approach has proven successful on every level, benefiting the participants and the entire school community. One of the program’s most significant benefits is enabling all students to develop a deeper appreciation for diversity. The message to the St. Paul’s Brotherhood is clear: Every person possesses unique gifts and talents and should be celebrated.

The CORE Pack began with five students and has continued to grow; this year, nine young men are in the program. The focus and key to its success is meeting each student’s unique needs by thoroughly understanding their challenges and strengths, setting clear standards and goals to track their achievements, and using tailored methods to evaluate progress. This personalized approach has been the difference for Jennifer Martinez, whose son John is a junior in the program. “The curriculum is tailored to John, and John’s strengths, interests, and personal achievements are fostered, celebrated, and embraced,” she shares.

Parents Marcy and Stephen Donham’s son Luke was part of that first class of five students the year the program began. It was a pivotal moment for the Donhams, who were unsure of Luke’s educational future once he left the familiar and adaptive environment of Our Lady of the Lake School. “When I first met with Brother Ray to discuss the Core Pack, he asked, ‘What are your goals for Luke?’ My answer was simple: I want Luke to be happy, safe, and reach his highest potential.” Marcy Donham recalls.

Brotherhood

Being part of St. Paul’s Brotherhood is also key to the CORE Pack’s success. Jennifer Martinez notes the significance of this camaraderie for her son, John. “He is part of a Brotherhood and truly feels a sense of belonging thanks to the amazing teachers, coaches, mentors, and students at St. Paul’s.” The program reflects the school’s commitment to living out the Lasallian mission by fully integrating these students into every aspect of the St. Paul’s experience.

Through the CORE Pack program, St. Paul’s provides young men with a well-rounded education focusing on every aspect of development. The skills acquired will serve each young man for a lifetime. The Donhams note the confidence and life-changing skills their son Luke gained from participating in the program. “The positive impact of the CORE Pack was evident in every step of Luke’s journey. During his junior and senior years, he completed a job training program at St. Paul’s, which equipped him with the tools and life skills that he continues to apply today as an employee of Maher Animal Hospital. Being a part of the SPS brotherhood is a gift, and I am forever grateful that Luke had such an excellent high school experience.”

Through this life-changing initiative, St. Paul’s continues to lead the way in providing a faith-based, inclusive education that transforms lives and strengthens the bonds of the Brotherhood. Jennifer Martinez sums it up with a deep appreciation: “My heart bursts every time we’re with the CORE Pack; it’s like a dream, and I know all the parents feel the same. We are beyond grateful.”

The program’s mission is to give students with developmental disabilities the tools and opportunities to foster independence and self-determination while participating fully in the vibrant Lasallian community. Without question, it is a mission that St. Paul’s has accomplished.
