the GEIER FAMILY

The Geier family—Randy, Melanie, and their daughters Liliana and Annabella—have called The Sanctuary home for 15 years. Drawn to the neighborhood’s lush green spaces and natural beauty, they were enchanted by the community long before moving in, often admiring the festive holiday lights during Christmas drives. Over time, The Sanctuary has become more than just a residence for the Geiers. It is a place filled with cherished friendships and lasting memories.

Nestled at the end of a cul-de-sac, their home perfectly blends traditional design and modern updates. A comprehensive renovation over the years has refreshed it into a lovely, inviting space. They have been busy refinishing the white oak floors, completely remodeling the kitchen with new countertops,

appliances, and a backsplash, and updating every bathroom. Outside, they added a patio area and an outdoor kitchen with a gas fire pit and redesigned the landscaping. Bringing it charmingly together, the home’s color palette is inspired by an oyster shell, incorporating shades of stunning ivory, gray, light taupe, and pale blue.

The kitchen is at the heart of their home, where the family naturally gathers. With a 12-foot island that comfortably seats six, it is a space made for conversation, entertainment, and holiday celebrations. A stunning French oak armoire from the 1800s serves as their pantry, adding both charm and functionality to the space. The warmth of their home extends to the built-ins in the dining and keeping rooms, as well as cozy window seats in the dining area and Annabella’s

on the Pre-Med track. She was recently named Miss Mobile Bay and is involved in the pre-med honor society as its historian. Annabella, 16, is a sophomore at Saint Scholastica Academy, where she is a member of the varsity swim team. She is considering the University of Alabama, Tennessee, or Ole Miss for college, with plans to study interior design.

bedroom. Three fireplaces add a comfortable ambiance, especially in the colder months when the Geiers enjoys gathering around their warm glow.

The Geiers’ outdoor space is the perfect place for relaxation and spending time with family and friends. With a swimming pool, hot tub, and a fully equipped outdoor kitchen, it’s perfect for summer fun or just unwinding by the fire pit in the cooler months. Fresh landscaping in the front and back yards ties it all together. The refurbishing of their gardens included the addition of fountains, lush greenery, and colorful flower beds adding to the charm.

Beyond their home, the Geiers enjoy spending time at their lake house on Lake Martin, in Alabama, where boating and swimming provide a perfect escape from the demands of daily life. They also love visiting 30A for beachside relaxation, making the most of their time together.

Their family time extends to dining and shopping as well. Locally, some of their favorite restaurants include Desi Vega’s, 527, Keith Young’s, and Pardo’s, where they enjoy everything from date nights to family dinners. Shopping is another enjoyable activity, with Melanie favoring Bliss and Niche, Randy appreciating Aquistapace, and the girls frequenting Hemline for the latest fashion finds.

While Randy and Melanie have maintained a lovely home filled with warmth, their daughters have grown into young women. Liliana, 21, is a junior at the University of Alabama, majoring in Public Health and k

a teacup poodle. Beignet is laid-back; Beau is the baby of the group, and make no mistake, little Roux is the alpha male. These furry companions are integral to their family, bringing daily joy and energy into their household.

The Geiers thrive on fun and adventure; their spirit is best captured by their unofficial theme song, “We Are Family.” And a family gathering would not be complete without their most loved traditional dish: Melanie’s homemade gumbo. It is a family favorite, cooked in a cast-iron skillet passed down from Melanie’s grandmother.

Whether hosting friends or enjoying each other’s company, the Geiers enthusiastically embrace life and and are always looking for their next adventure. Melanie contends that if there’s one word to describe them, it’s “fun.” Their love for entertaining and making memories together is at the core of everything they do.

The Geiers appreciate everything The Sanctuary offers, from its natural beauty and strong sense of community to the home where they have raised their daughters—the home that reflects what they cherish most: time spent with family and friends making memories.

Health Tips from Sanctuary Resident Dr. Brent Giuffre

of Covington Trace ER & Hospital

For allergy sufferers, spring can bring far more than beautiful gardens. It can mean sneezing, itchy eyes, and congestion. As pollen levels rise, so do the challenges of managing seasonal allergies. To help you enjoy the season without discomfort, here are some practical tips for minimizing allergy symptoms this spring. Prepare for Allergy Season:

1. Identify Your Allergy Triggers

Various allergens can cause reactions; during spring, tree pollen is a common culprit. Keep track of pollen levels through local reports to know when it’s best to limit outdoor activities.

2. Have Your Medications Ready

Most seasonal allergy symptoms can be managed with over-the-counter medications. Different types target specific symptoms—antihistamine pills help with itching, while nasal sprays relieve congestion. Be sure to check expiration dates and replace any outdated medications.

3. Minimize Exposure to Allergens

Pay attention to environmental reports, like pollen

counts, and take steps to protect yourself. Wearing sunglasses shields your eyes, and a face mask can help reduce pollen inhalation.

4. Support Your Body with the Right Foods

Certain foods may help ease allergy symptoms. Fruits and vegetables support immune function and reduce inflammation, while green tea can help break up mucus for easier breathing.

5. Improve Indoor Air Quality

Although allergens can’t be removed entirely from the air; however, air purifiers, dehumidifiers, and high-quality filters can help create a cleaner, more comfortable living environment.

When to Visit the ER for Seasonal Allergies

Most seasonal allergies can be managed with home remedies or over-the-counter meds, but severe cases may require more treatment. From severe congestion to fever, our expert team provides fast, effective treatment with onsite lab services to get you feeling better quickly.

Covington Trace ER & Hospital offers 24/7 care—little to no wait! We accept all commercial insurance. According to the No Surprise Act, emergency visits are covered regardless of your network status.

March/April Gardening Tips

As spring arrives, it’s time to refresh your lawn and garden after the winter months. A little early-season care can make a big difference in keeping your landscape healthy and thriving. Here are a few essential tasks to tackle this spring:

• Check Your Irrigation System – Turn your system back on and inspect for broken pipes or damaged backflow preventers caused by winter freezes.

• Apply Pre-Emergent Herbicide – Prevent summer weeds like crabgrass and goosegrass by applying a pre-emergent herbicide early in the season.

• Fertilize Your Lawn – Use a complete fertilizer to nourish your grass and promote healthy growth.

• Treat Plants and Trees – Spray systemic insecticides in early March to protect against insect infestations as the growing season begins.

By taking these steps early in the season, you’ll set your lawn and garden up for success all year. A little preparation now means healthier plants, fewer weeds, and a beautiful outdoor space to enjoy throughout the warmer months.

Meredith Poirier

A Legacy of Dedication, Teamwork, and Triumph

For Meredith Poirier, cheerleading is more than just a sport—it’s a family, a passion, and a journey that has shaped her both as an athlete and a person. A senior at Mandeville High School, Meredith has been dedicated to cheerleading since sixth grade, when she first tried out for the junior high team. In early February, she and her teammates took their talents to the national stage, competing at the UCA National High School Cheerleading Championship in Orlando.

Stepping onto the mat for her final competition was an emotional experience. “I was so excited to go out there and show off all our hard work, but knowing this would be the last time doing what I love with my teammates made the moment very bittersweet,” Meredith shares. Months of preparation, trial and error, and trust in their coaches led to an incredible achievement, and it was quite a feat.

This year’s event brought together more than 27,000 athletes from 1,286 teams representing 34 states. Teams competed in either the Traditional Routine or Game Day divisions, with Mandeville High School being one of the few to compete in both. The MHS Varsity Cheer team placed 2nd in both the Game Day and World Title competitions,

ranking among the top 10 highest-scoring varsity teams in the Game Day category.

One of Meredith’s favorite memories from the championship was when they learned they had advanced straight to the finals. “The whole room was screaming and hugging, and the proud looks on our coaches’ faces proved all our hard work had been seen!” she recalls.

As she looks ahead to attending Auburn University in the fall, Meredith considers the lessons cheerleading has taught her. “This sport has shaped me as an athlete and as a person by showing me what dedication really is and the importance of pushing through challenges to get to where you want to be! “

“Cheerleading to me is being a part of a family,” reflects Meredith. The bonds built within her team will undoubtedly last a lifetime. Their dedication to one another and the shared determination to succeed were forged through loyalty, hard work, and the grit it took to achieve their goals: together.

What a memorable way to finish her long and devoted cheerleading career, surrounded by her teammates as they exited the national stage as winners!

Best Practices for Optimum Movement in the Arthritic Dog

If your dog is diagnosed with arthritis, it can break your heart to watch your beloved furry friend limping around from arthritis pain. One meaningful way to help ease their pain and keep them mobile and happy is to incorporate exercise into their therapy.

The following comprehensive exercises should be done under the supervision and guidance of a veterinarian. Start slow (a few minutes each day) and work up to 15-minute sessions.

• SLOW WALKING

This will increase blood and qi (“chee”) and help your pet’s overall circulation.

• HIKING

The incline and decline of hiking can take stress off the joints. And the cool smells along the way will be much appreciated by your dog.

• SWIMMING

Many pets with body aches on land find swimming an excellent way to enjoy pain-free movement. The water should be at a normal temperature, and the sessions should start slowly (a few minutes). Watch your dog for tired signs, and give him frequent breaks. Dogs need to wear flotation devices in the pool. It will help support them and prevent drowning if they become too tired in the water.

• INTERACTIVE PLAY INSIDE YOUR HOME

Pick a carpeted area and roll the ball or throw a toy. Even short periods of play will keep a dog active and help stimulate them mentally.

• STRENGTH EXERCISES

Work with an integrative medicine veterinarian to learn how to do simple, in-home exercises to strengthen your aging pet.

Some people accept that their old dog is not moving and not playing. In integrative medicine, this isn’t the case. While seniors should rest often, they should also enjoy moving and being part of your world.

When you know better, you do better. We can do better together!

Dr. Jack Saux and A Pirate Party

Charting a Course for Healing and Hope

Dr. Jack Saux isn’t what one might imagine when picturing an oncologist. The word comes to mind, but even truly reflect all that is Dr. Saux-the pirate, the friend, the healer, and yes, the cheerleader.

Dressed in elaborate costumes with nails painted in vibrant colors or sharing lighthearted moments media, he brings a different approach to patient care. His philosophy is simple—if it lifts spirits, it’s worth doing. Though known for his flamboyant bits, those are only a part of who Dr. Jack Saux is. Beneath the multicolored beard and tutu is a man whose heart and soul are dedicated to his patients.

At just three years old, Dr. Saux donned his first eye patch; from that moment, he never looked back. Over the years, his love for the high seas only grew, shaping his persona and how he connected with people. Today, with more than three decades of medical experience, he is well-known, not just as an oncologist but as the Pirate Oncologist—a man who blends expertise with an unmistakable sense of whimsy.

Dr. Saux’s passion for piracy extends beyond his

personal style. For twelve years, he has hosted a legendary fundraiser that has become a Covington tradition. What began as a small birthday celebration became a significant community event known as the Pirate Party. Held annually at the Columbia Street Tap Room, this gathering draws crowds eager to enjoy live music, delicious food from local restaurants, and auctions featuring art and unique experiences.

This year’s event, held on January 18th, continued the tradition of revelry and generosity. More than just a night of celebration—though there is plenty of that— the Pirate Party has raised over $150,000 in the past decade, funding patient assistance programs at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center and expanding access to care across Covington and the Northshore.

The 2025 Pirate Party holds even greater significance, as Dr. Saux himself was diagnosed with prostate cancer in mid-2023. Even while navigating his own cancer battle, he remained steadfast in his mission to help others. He credits the community’s tireless support as a source of strength, proving that no one faces cancer alone.

The impact of Dr. Saux’s philanthropy is immeasurable. Through this event and many other charitable appearances, he has helped secure substantial support for cancer patients, children’s causes, and mental health initiatives.

Dr. Saux navigates life with a healer’s touch and a pirate’s spirit, showing that moments of joy are not just possible—they’re everything even in the roughest waters.

Teddy Andrews sanctuary residents THE ANDREWS family

The Andrews family found the perfect addition to their home in Teddy, a 10-month-old King Charles Cavalier Spaniel. Wanting a slightly older, somewhat-trained puppy, they discovered Teddy and fell in love instantly. With his black, brown, and white fur, he looks just like a teddy bear— adorable, cuddly, and sweet.

Choosing a King Charles Cavalier was easy, as the breed is known for being gentle and great with children. Finding a loving, familyfriendly dog was

a top priority, with their youngest boys being nine and four.

Teddy has fit right in, quickly becoming the center of attention. He’s mild-mannered yet playful and always eager for a game of fetch. Though all four boys try to claim him, Teddy has chosen his person—he follows Jennifer everywhere and always returns to her lap.

The Andrews were unsure how Teddy would do in the snow, but he surprised everyone by racing through it like one of the kids. His playful spirit and affectionate nature have made him an irreplaceable part of the Andrews family.
