THE HULSEY FAMILY

For the Hulseys, TerraBella is far more than just a place to live; it’s a place of comfort, love, and familiarity for their busy family. Andy and Sarah, who met at the University of Southern Mississippi, were drawn to the Northshore early on, visiting friends and falling in love with the community.

Andy is Vice President of Construction Operations for Stansell Construction. Sarah, a nurse with 20 years of critical care experience, recently started a new role at the St. Tammany Ambulatory Surgery Center. Although the two have demanding careers, raising their children, Hayden Grace, 16, and Callen, 14, is their top priority.

Hayden Grace, a junior at SSA, balances academics with her passion for dance. As a member of the Elite

Pro Company at Northshore Academy of Dance and SSA’s Varsity Dance Team, she dreams of continuing her love of dance at the collegiate level. Academics are a priority for Hayden Grace, as she is a National, Art, and Science Honor Society member. She’s also involved in Doves for Life and Senior Living at SSA, two clubs that allow her to connect with her school and the broader community. Callen, an eighthgrader at Madisonville Junior High, shines academically and athletically. Whether playing competitive soccer for CYSA, running track, or serving on the Student Council, he embraces every opportunity to grow and connect with his peers while maintaining an excellent GPA. Next year, he looks forward to starting high school at Saint Paul’s School.

stairs, complete with industrial floating shelves and a mirror-tiled backsplash. It is the perfect display for Andy’s growing bourbon collection. Another favorite is their open kitchen and living area, which flow seamlessly into the screened side porch, creating a wonderful space for gatherings with friends and family.

Louie, their adorable golden doodle, rounds out the family. He loves his daily walks and greets every neighbor with a wag.

The Hulseys have lived in their TerraBella home for five years. They initially fell in love with the community while visiting friends in the neighborhood for concerts and social events. In 2020, the opportunity to make TerraBella their home became a reality, and they were thrilled to become part of it.

Their home, built by Ross Dupre, started as a spec home when the slab was poured, but Andy and Sarah connected instantly to the rendering and were given the chance to make it a custom home for their family, turning it into a personalized haven. One of their favorite projects is the built-in bar under the

Living in TerraBella has only deepened their love for the community. From concerts in the park to bike rides to the Rusty Pelican, they love the small-town feel and close connections they’ve made with their neighbors. They also appreciate the neighborhood pool and green spaces, which offer an extra space for Hayden Grace and Callen to hang out with friends. Naturally, the Hulseys love having the Reminding close, providing easy access to grab a coffee and catch up with neighbors.

The Hulsey family cherishes time spent on the water in their boat. They share ownership of a wakeboarding and surfing boat with their best friends, giving their children a chance to grow up wake-surfing and tubing on the river. For them, k

boat days are the best, allowing them to slow down and enjoy time together. “If it were up to me, we’d be on the boat every day,” says Sarah. The hot days will often find them boating on the Tchefuncte River or spending time with Sarah’s family at Lake St. John in Ferriday, Louisiana.

For local shopping, Hayden Grace enjoys exploring the area’s boutiques and works part-time at Hazel Lane in Covington. While she tries to save her earnings, she can’t resist picking up a few favorite pieces from the store. All of the Hulseys appreciate Covington’s local gems like LOLA, Cilantro’s, or Habanero’s. Gallagher’s is their go-to when Sarah and Andy want to get away for a quiet date night.

Music plays a significant role in the Hulsey family. They love attending local concerts and have even traveled to see favorite bands like Mumford and Sons, Dave Matthews Band, O.A.R., and The Revivalists. Nurtured since their birth, Hayden Grace and Callen’s love of music runs deep.

Whether dancing at a concert or just sharing a meal at home, the Hulseys know how to enjoy life, choosing “fun” as the word that best describes their family. Sarah, Andy, Hayden Grace, and Callen always find a way to have fun, remembering that what they’re doing isn’t nearly as important as who they are doing it with, especially when it’s with each other.

Blaize Hastings

Balancing school, family, and hobbies can be challenging, but St. Paul’s sophomore, Blaize Hastings, approaches it with gratitude and determination. Growing up in a family of achievers, including two older brothers—one studying at LSU and another pursuing a PhD at UNO—along with parents Stacie and Todd, has been a constant source of inspiration, support, and encouragement.

Science is Blaize’s favorite subject in school, thanks to a memorable 7th-grade biology teacher. Known for his humor and decades of teaching experience, this teacher left a lasting impression, instilling a love for learning through his unique teaching style and philosophy of “killing people with kindness.”

Wanderlust runs deep, as Blaize loves to explore and connect with the world beyond his familiar surroundings. While his dreams begin with a journey across the United States, he envisions something far more immersive than a quick tour. Blaize imagines dedicating time to experience life in each state, feeling the unique rhythms, landscapes, and cultures.

Music is another key part of Blaize’s life, with bass guitar becoming a passion influenced by a friend. What started as a hobby has become much more, as it’s a way he can express creativity and connect with others. He plays his preferred instrument, the bass guitar, in the band he and some other St. Paul’s sophomores started this school year. Blaize enjoys collaborating with fellow “Frog in Space” bandmates to perfect each song. The satisfaction of mastering and sharing music comes from hours of practice and delivers a feeling like no other.

Books like To Kill a Mockingbird and The One and Only Ivan have also shaped this young man’s perspective. Each book has an in depth plot, powerful setting, and unforgettable characters, but the inspiration they offer in terms of empathy, resilience and self-discovery are the most meaningful for Blaize. These essential life lessons both inspire empathy, resilience, and self-discovery. For Blaize, these essential life lessons resonate deeply in the pages of these books, making them memorable favorites.

Blaize Hastings is a grounded yet ambitious young man, defined by his dreams of exploration and dedication to noticing life’s meaningful moments. As he carefully balances school, hobbies, and friendships, Blaize appreciates and uses time wisely to approach every moment with a sense of purpose and joy.

BUILDER TIPS from terrabella resident

Spring Building Tips for Your Custom Home

As spring settles in, it’s an ideal time to start thinking about building your dream home. The season offers new opportunities, from improved weather conditions to fresh design possibilities. Whether you’re planning to break ground soon or just beginning to explore ideas, here are a few tips to consider for your custom home project this spring.

1. Prepare for Seasonal Weather

Spring’s unpredictable weather can affect construction, making flexibility key. Mild temperatures are ideal, but sudden rain or storms can cause delays. Talk to your builder about their plan for weather-related challenges and ensure your timeline has a buffer to keep things on track.

2. Maximize Natural Light

One of the highlights of spring is the abundance of natural sunlight. When designing your home, think about how you can incorporate natural light into your space. Large windows, skylights, and open floorplans can help bring the outdoors in, making your home feel bright, airy, and connected to nature. Consider the direction your home faces to make the most of the sun’s path through the day.

3. Prioritize Energy Efficiency

Spring is a great time to consider how your new home will perform energy-wise throughout the year. As temperatures rise, you might consider building with energy-efficient

Louisiana’s Premier Homebuilder & Remodeling Company Jason Hand

features such as high-quality insulation, energy-saving windows, and advanced heating and cooling systems. These sustainable choices not only help reduce your environmental footprint but can also lead to long-term savings on energy bills.

4. Think Ahead for Future Flexibility

Spring brings a sense of renewal, and it’s a perfect time to consider future-proofing your home. Think about how your needs might change over the years, and design spaces that can adapt to new circumstances. Multi-functional rooms, flexible layouts, and future-ready infrastructure can ensure your home remains a comfortable and practical space as your lifestyle evolves.

5. Streamline the Building Process

Building a custom home is complex, but clear communication with your builder about timelines, budget, and design can ease the process. A transparent, organized team makes the experience much smoother.

This spring, take advantage of the season’s inspiration to start planning a home that’s not only beautiful but practical, sustainable, and future-focused. With careful planning and collaboration with the right professionals, you’ll be well on your way to a custom home that suits your needs for years.

TIPs by terrabella resident

Dr. Maher With Maher Animal Hospital

A VET’S MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1) “Doc, isn’t there a SHOT for fleas?!”

“Not yet! But we will be first in line to carry it one of these days!” Our favorite flea and tick preventative is Bravecto because it’s only given 4 times a year. It works like a charm. Fleas die immediately, and giving it to all pets on the same day will treat your house and yard. Our clients often pair it with the year-long Proheart shot for heart worm prevention, a very convenient combo. It’s a topical drip for cats, and for dogs, it’s a chewable treat.

2) “Doc, my old girl is slow to get up! She can’t even jump in the truck anymore!”

“Same! My dog Molly is on my favorite glucosamine treat, Phycox, for arthritis. If she misses one day, she limps!” We have a few options beyond that, including the monthly “Arthritis Shot,” which is Librela for dogs and Solensia for cats. We carry other safe daily anti-inflammatories as well. However, keep in mind that “Old age is not a disease,” as our favorite internist, Dr. Kirk Ryan, always says. If your pet is not eating well, is somewhat lethargic, drinking more, or just has

different habits, these may be symptoms of an age-related disease process or simply the aging of internal organs! A quick blood test may rule out some big worries- and we will get you the results that day.

3) “I’m cooking for my dog - is that ok?”

“Sure! If you have time, and it works for you, go for it!” Dr. Rusty feeds his dog Purina for overweight dogs, and she inhales it. The only tricky part of cooking for your dog is controlling the calories in each serving. If you are struggling with getting weight off your pet, we recommend not adding human food and decreasing treats. We also recommend some kind of canned or hard commercial food to ensure the essential vitamins and minerals are included.

TERRABELLA FAMILY PET

Biscuit & Bolt Life with Two Golden Brothers

The Whiteman family would not be complete without their lovable eight-year-old Golden Retrievers, Biscuit and Bolt, who have been cherished family members since they arrived at eight weeks old.

The story of how Biscuit and Bolt became a part of the Whiteman family is nothing short of fate. As the Whitemans were building their home in Terra Bella, their twin boys decided they each wanted a boy puppy. Having lost their first Golden Retriever, Bling, the year before, the timing felt right. Thus, Lisa began to look for two Golden male puppies. She found a breeder in Montogomery, Alabama, with two males available, and naturally, she inquired about the birth date of the pups. Brothers Biscuit and Bolt were born on March 4th— the same day as her twins. The Whitemans knew these pups were meant to be theirs from that moment. Every year, the Whitemans have a “BIG birthday party,” celebrating the twins and their furry brothers in one joyous event.

Though they are brothers, Biscuit and Bolt couldn’t have more different personalities. Bolt, lovingly referred to as the “old soul,” moves through life leisurely, enjoying quiet moments and soaking up affection. On the other hand, Biscuit is a whirlwind of energy, bouncing through life with enthusiasm. Lisa compares his energy and enthusiasm to Tigger from Winnie the Pooh. His signature move? Giving hugs to anyone lucky enough to meet him.

Although they have contrasting personalities, they are very similar in appearance, with a few exceptions. Biscuit is taller and leaner than Bolt, who is affectionately compared to a football defensive lineman — solid and sturdy. His appearance has even been lovingly compared to a “chunky monkey.”

Their antics, of course, are legendary. Biscuit’s intelligence and curiosity have led him

to master the art of door-opening, even unlocking a few! More than once, the Whitemans have come home to find the mischievous brothers frolicking in the yard after Biscuit gingerly finagled the door open, giving the boys their freedom. Bolt, not to be outdone, has his own brand of mischief. One Christmas, a gift for one of the twins was wrapped in special Golden Retriever-themed paper. When Lisa arrived home from work, she discovered that Bolt had carefully unwrapped the gift, proudly dragging the festive paper to his bed and shredding it.

The Whiteman family’s love for Golden Retrievers began with Bling, their first dog, who worked alongside Lisa as a therapy dog in the hospital. Bling’s gentle nature and bond with the children left a lasting impression. Thus, deciding to welcome Biscuit and Bolt into their family was an easy decision, and the Whiteman family is happy they made it.

Dr. Jack Saux and A Pirate Party

Charting a Course for Healing and Hope

Dr. Jack Saux isn’t what one might imagine when picturing an oncologist. The word comes to mind, but even truly reflect all that is Dr. Saux-the pirate, the friend, the healer, and yes, the cheerleader.

Dressed in elaborate costumes with nails painted in vibrant colors or sharing lighthearted moments media, he brings a different approach to patient care. His philosophy is simple—if it lifts spirits, it’s worth doing. Though known for his flamboyant bits, those are only a part of who Dr. Jack Saux is. Beneath the multicolored beard and tutu is a man whose heart and soul are dedicated to his patients.

At just three years old, Dr. Saux donned his first eye patch; from that moment, he never looked back. Over the years, his love for the high seas only grew, shaping his persona and how he connected with people. Today, with more than three decades of medical experience, he is well-known, not just as an oncologist but as the Pirate Oncologist—a man who blends expertise with an unmistakable sense of whimsy.

Dr. Saux’s passion for piracy extends beyond his

personal style. For twelve years, he has hosted a legendary fundraiser that has become a Covington tradition. What began as a small birthday celebration became a significant community event known as the Pirate Party. Held annually at the Columbia Street Tap Room, this gathering draws crowds eager to enjoy live music, delicious food from local restaurants, and auctions featuring art and unique experiences.

This year’s event, held on January 18th, continued the tradition of revelry and generosity. More than just a night of celebration—though there is plenty of that— the Pirate Party has raised over $150,000 in the past decade, funding patient assistance programs at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center and expanding access to care across Covington and the Northshore.

The 2025 Pirate Party holds even greater significance, as Dr. Saux himself was diagnosed with prostate cancer in mid-2023. Even while navigating his own cancer battle, he remained steadfast in his mission to help others. He credits the community’s tireless support as a source of strength, proving that no one faces cancer alone.

The impact of Dr. Saux’s philanthropy is immeasurable. Through this event and many other charitable appearances, he has helped secure substantial support for cancer patients, children’s causes, and mental health initiatives.

Dr. Saux navigates life with a healer’s touch and a pirate’s spirit, showing that moments of joy are not just possible—they’re everything even in the roughest waters.
