Cynthia “Cindy” Clark

I invite you “In the Kitchen” to share recipes and to cook with you in your home or restaurant.

I am a former Zuppardo family restaurateur, and my grandma Mary Binder, was the founder of Binder’s Famous Bakery in the Upper Ninth Ward on St. Claude Avenue in New Orleans. As a child, I remember playing ball with “flour” in my grandma Mama Mae’s bakery attic with my 4 siblings Gregory, Michelle, Randy and Billy. My most vivid memories in the kitchen are of Grandma Binder, and my mother Rachel, cooking and baking, old-fashioned healthy, delicious homemade dishes.

Mourning, Resilience and Giving Back in New Orleans

IT WAS ONLY A FEW MONTHS AGO that I shared with you the glee as Taylor Swift fans filled the French Quarter with excitement, laughter, and music. It was a time of celebration and a reminder of why people are drawn to New Orleans, fall in love with her spirit, and her people, and why New Orleans is unlike anywhere else in the world.

But now, we grieve.

What happened in the early morning hours of New Year’s Day was shocking and devastating. Some things are too heavy for words, and this is one of them. As we watched the developing saga grow more tragic, the pervasive sadness left many with no words but much sorrow.

Our city has always opened her arms to the world in celebration, but now she carries the scars of unthinkable violence. We mourn for those whose lives have been forever changed. We pray for the victims and their families, hoping they find comfort in the embrace of a community that stands with them. To those hurting, we see you. To those lost, we share your despair. And to those who embrace New Orleans and her gentle and fun spirit, we will continue celebrating with her—because that is in our hearts and our DNA.

New Orleans has always been a place of resilience, never letting darkness define her or her people. This fact holds true in the wake of this tragedy, as New Orleanians are moved with a desire to help.

Several organizations have established vetted fundraisers for those affected by the New Year’s Day Attack.

THE GREATER NEW ORLEANS FOUNDATION

The Greater New Orleans Foundation, serving 13 metro parishes, has formed a volunteer group to oversee donations from the New Year’s Day Tragedy Fund. They’ll hold a public meeting on January 27 for community input and are partnering with the Mass Violence Survivors Fund to ensure aid reaches attack survivors.

For more information on this initiative, go to gnof.org.

UNITED WAY NEW ORLEANS

The United for New Orleans Relief Fund provides crucial support to those affected by the New Year’s Day attack. Funds have been distributed to trusted local organizations to ensure survivors receive the help they need:

$25,000 to 504HealthNet’s Healthy Hospitality Initiative for mental health counseling and support services.

$7,500 to Southeast Louisiana Legal Services (SLLS) to offer free legal aid, including benefits assistance, estate planning, and eviction defense.

$10,000 to Seeds of NOLA Trauma Recovery Center at University Medical Center, providing care and support for victims of violent crime.

For donations and resources, go to UnitedWaySELA. org/UnitedforNOLA instagram.com/unitedwaysela

Among those are The Greater New Orleans Foundation and the United Way of Southeast Louisiana.

Vibrant Brushstrokes and the Rhythm of New Orleans

FOR COVER ARTIST ISABELLE JACOPIN, her visual creations and the rhythm of New Orleans are complementary but distinct elements—essential to understanding her artistic inspiration.

Step onto the vibrant streets of New Orleans, and you may just find yourself immersed in the world of Isabelle Jacopin. A self-taught artist whose canvases burst with the city’s energy, Isabelle has built a career entrenched in intensity, persistence, and an indisputable connection to her surroundings. From the festive swirl of Second Lines to the glow of brass band reflections, her paintings capture the heart of New Orleans in an

Cover Artist Isabelle Jacopin

evocative and celebratory way.

Born and raised in Brittany, France, Isabelle’s artistic journey began early— though not in the most conventional setting. “My father was a pork butcher, so I wasn’t born into an artistic family,” she shares. “But I was always drawing, sketching imaginary houses and dancers on butcher paper.” At just 17, she turned her talent into a livelihood by painting and selling hand-painted silk scarves in markets and on the streets of Brittany. She thrived in this creative pursuit for over a decade before transitioning to pastels, a medium that would ultimately lead her to New Orleans.

Isabelle’s work first made waves in the city through “Objets Trouvés,” a gallery on Magazine Street, where she showcased paintings of poppy fields. But it wasn’t until a transformative trip to Cuba that she fully embraced oil painting. “I wanted to capture the amazing buildings, landscapes, and, most of all, the Cuban people. I needed a medium that allowed for large-scale works with rich textures, so I started painting

with palette knives,” she explains.

Today, her studio in the heart of the French Quarter is both a workspace and an endless source of inspiration. “I open my windows, and I see music, weddings, parades—my corner at Royal and Saint Peter Street is my main subject!”

For Isabelle, painting is an adventure, not a challenge. “Each piece is a pleasant journey,” she says. She doesn’t select her

photos: JEFF STROUT

subjects; instead, they choose her. “When I see something so interesting that I can’t resist, I have to put it on a sketch or canvas.” Her approach is spontaneous, capturing the joy and movement of life in New Orleans.

She is particularly drawn to painting reflections on brass instruments, Mardi Gras trees, and the dynamic energy of Second Lines. “Painting Mardi Gras trees is almost a meditation for me. It’s about layering colors and textures, letting my imagination take over. It’s incredibly relaxing.” As such, Isabelle’s portfolio includes iconic designs such as the French Quarter Festival poster in 2016, the Bayou Boogaloo poster in 2012, the Mardi Gras Moms poster in 2018, and also a Groove Gala poster for WWOZ. Each one reflects her unique ability to capture the vitality of New Orleans through vibrant and dynamic visuals.

While it’s difficult to categorize her work as belonging to a single artistic movement, Isabelle describes it as “maybe neoimpressionist.” Her paintings are textured, lively, and deeply expressive, inviting viewers into a world where music and movement are as much a part of the canvas as the paint itself.

Unlike many contemporary artists, Isabelle does not produce prints or giclées. “Each painting is an adventure, original and unique. I want my collectors to know they own a one-of-a-kind piece.”

In addition to her career, Isabelle finds joy in seeing creativity flourish in her family. “I’m so glad that my two kids and three grandkids are very creative and artists themselves!” she says proudly.

During the summer, Isabelle returns to her studio in Limuiel, in the picturesque Dordogne region of southwest France. There, surrounded by the serene landscapes and rich culture, she draws inspiration for her work, blending her love for French and New Orleans art scenes. This time

spent in France offers her the perfect balance of artistic exploration and personal rejuvenation.

Her advice for aspiring artists is simple but powerful: “Don’t listen to people who say you can’t make a living with art. If you work hard, you’ll have a fabulous life doing what you love.”

As an artist who has made New Orleans a significant part of her art, Isabelle Jacopin continues to bring the city’s spirit to life, one brushstroke at a time. Whether through the reflection of a tuba or the cascading colors of a Mardi Gras tree, her work is a love letter to the vibrancy, music, and charm of the Crescent City.

To explore the Isabelle’s creations in person, visit the Isabelle Jacopin Gallery at 829 Royal Street.

Trusted Doctors of New Orleans Skilled Hands and Expert Care

IN NEW ORLEANS, THE BEST DOCTORS aren’t just names on a list—they’re the physicians locals turn to, the specialists they recommend to family and friends. Whether performing intricate surgeries, pioneering new treatments, or simply providing compassionate, personalized care, these medical professionals are setting the standard in their fields.

From plastic surgery and pain management to women’s health, orthopedics, and dentistry, these experts combine skill, innovation, and a commitment to their patients. They’re not just keeping up with medical advancements—they’re leading the way, ensuring that New Orleanians receive top-tier care.

Take a closer look at the doctors making a difference in the lives of their patients every day.

DR. BRIAN M. KOCH: EXPERT PAIN MANAGEMENT

Dr. Brian M. Koch, a New Orleans native, specializes in Interventional Pain Management at Culicchia Neurological. Double board-certified in Pain Medicine and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, he helps patients manage neck, back, shoulder, hip, and knee pain using advanced, minimally invasive procedures.

Inspired by his own high school sports injury, Dr. Koch pursued a career dedicated to spine and joint care.

He offers innovative treatments such as epidural spine injections, peripheral nerve stimulators, and specialized devices for spinal stenosis and sacroiliac joint dysfunction. With an in-office procedure suite, many treatments require minimal downtime.

“Having the privilege to manage my patients’ pain is tremendously rewarding,” says Dr. Koch. “I work closely with my patients to improve the quality of their lives by assisting them with changes in their lifestyle while providing medical interventions. The ultimate goal is always to return the patient to their family, career, and community.”

Dr. Koch is a dedicated husband and father of two young children, prioritizing family in his free time. He is actively involved in the community, often participating in events that support his children’s education, whether through school fundraisers or local initiatives.

PRECISION AND COMPASSION: DR. HEATH CHARVET’S APPROACH TO TRANSFORMATIVE SURGERY

“Plastic surgery is the perfect marriage of art and science,” emphasizes double board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Heath Charvet. As the cornerstone of Dr. Charvet’s approach, this principle guides his dedication to integrating artistic skill with medical precision in aesthetic

surgery and breast reconstruction.

Dr. Charvet’s patients are far more than just surgical cases. “The relationships I develop with my patients are the most fulfilling; every patient I operate on becomes a part of my family.” These connections inspire his passion for intricate details, combining deep structural work with modern technology to deliver natural-looking, lasting results.

Staying at the forefront of his field, Dr. Charvet continually evolves his techniques. He stresses, “Knowledge is power; I read constantly to keep myself up-to-date with the newest and greatest techniques. Not only do I travel and lecture on aesthetic medicine to teach others, but I spend time with the greatest and brightest minds in plastic surgery to make sure I remain among the best surgeons in the country.”

Dr. Charvet and his wife, Lisa, chief of anesthesiology at his practice, Magnolia Plastic Surgery, share a love for staying active and exploring new places with their children. An avid college football fan, he also appreciates good wine: collecting, reading about, and savoring a glass, particularly a well-crafted Burgundy.

DR. CHRISTOPHER RODRIGUE: ADVANCING WOMEN’S HEALTH IN HIS COMMUNITY

Raised in Thibodaux, LA, Dr. Christopher Rodrigue was drawn to medicine through a desire to serve others. His path in medicine began as a phlebotomist at Thibodaux Regional Health System as a summer job after graduating from high school. After earning his medical degree from LSU Health Sciences Center, he chose obstetrics and gynecology due to its unique blend of patient continuity and variety.

Dr. Rodrigue’s approach to patient care stands out because of his connection to his community. “I feel very lucky to be able to return to my hometown and care for the people in our area,” he shares. Thibodaux Regional Women’s Clinic offers a personalized experience, with many of his patients and their families being lifelong acquaintances. He feels fortunate to provide them with

advanced medical care in their community.

Utilizing the latest minimally invasive and robotic surgery advancements provided at Thibodaux Regional Health System, Dr. Rodrigue offers his patients faster recovery times and less discomfort. An advocate of empowering patients, he also provides non-surgical options and a wider range of treatment choices to make informed decisions about their care.

Outside of his practice, Dr. Rodrigue enjoys traveling with his wife, who is also an OB/GYN, and their three daughters, trying new restaurants and hosting family gatherings.

Dr. Christopher Rodrigue blends his passion for patient care with his commitment to his community. The joy he finds in his work is evident in those moments he experiences with each delivery of new life.

DR. RACHEL NEUMEYER: TRANSFORMING SMILES WITH ARTISTRY AND INNOVATION

Dr. Rachel Neumeyer’s interest in dentistry began at a young age, starting with a fascination with science and the desire to work with her hands. It was an interest that never wavered. After earning her Doctorate of Dental Surgery from LSU School of Dentistry, she dedicated herself to mastering not only general and cosmetic dentistry but also cutting-edge techniques in full-mouth rehabilitation, dental implants, and therapeutic Botox for TMJ disorders.

For nearly a decade, Dr. Neumeyer has been providing top-tier dental care in the New Orleans area, blending artistry with precision to transform smiles and boost confidence. At her practice, Revival Dental, her approach is patient centered. Each visit is that just a procedure; it’s an opportunity to build relationships, understand individual goals, and offer a dental experience like no other.

Investing in the latest advancements is integral to Dr. Neumeyer’s practice. From 3D imaging technology to same-day crowns crafted with CADCAM technology, she ensures her patients receive state-of-the-art treatment.

Beyond the office, Dr. Neumeyer enjoys family time and cheering on her teams– the Saints, LSU, and the

Pelicans. Her passion for dentistry is matched only by her commitment to creating confident, healthy smiles that change lives.

DR. SUMA MADDOX: REDEFINING BEAUTY THROUGH RECONSTRUCTION AND EMPOWERMENT

Dr. Suma Maddox, Louisiana’s only double-boardcertified female plastic surgeon performing aesthetic and reconstructive breast surgery, offers the widest range of possibilities and a nuanced understanding of achieving her patients’ goals. She recognizes that how we feel about our bodies is deeply personal, telling a story about who we are as women. “What we bring to the consultation for reconstructive surgery is emotional, even sacred,” she shares.

But it isn’t just because of her extensive training. It isn’t just that she’s a wife and mother of three who empathizes with the busy lives of her patients. It’s the care she offers– the attention to detail. Her reverence for bold, fearless femininity drives her to provide

compassionate, personalized care that honors each patient’s journey.

Dr. Maddox provides a nurturing, introspective, and empowering experience, offering reconstructive solutions in a way that only a woman could. As one client said, “Dr. Maddox was attentive and caring, and I appreciated how she made me feel comfortable as a woman going through a truly female personal experience.”

Reconstruction takes time, involves a considerable healing process, and sometimes requires multiple surgeries. Dr. Maddox is present at every visit, carefully guiding the entire reconstruction process and focusing on achieving ultimate goals with personalized care and attention at every stage. By combining the principles of reconstruction with aesthetics, the results are elevated to a higher standard.

Becoming a patient of Dr. Maddox means embracing and honoring your individuality while staying true to yourself. It’s about feeling fully supported, seen without judgment, and receiving exceptional surgical care from a leader in the field.

DR. ROBERT BOSTICK: A PASSION FOR MOVEMENT, MUSIC, AND MODERN MEDICINE

For Dr. Robert Bostick, movement isn’t just something he restores—it’s a way of life. Raised in New Orleans by a pediatrician father and an emergency room nurse mother, he grew up with medicine in his DNA. His love of sports and physical activity drew him toward orthopedics, where he could help people regain mobility and return to doing what they love.

At Metairie Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, Dr.Bostick specializes in treating everything from ACL >>

injuries and rotator cuff tears to arthritis and meniscal damage. Thanks to innovations in minimally invasive surgery and biologic treatments, he can offer cuttingedge care that gets patients back on their feet faster than ever. What excites Dr. Bostick these days is the future of orthopedic medicine, where augmented reality and robotic-assisted surgeries take precision and personalization to an entirely new level.

Dr. Bostick believes keeping bones and joints healthy starts long before an injury. His prescription for longevity? Weight-bearing exercises, a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, and addressing joint pain early rather than pushing through discomfort.

When he’s not in the operating room, Dr.Bostick] finds his rhythm in unexpected ways— sailing, traveling, cooking, and even playing guitar in a local band. He knows firsthand what it means to be a “weekend warrior” and has the utmost respect for his patients who push their limits, whether on the field or in everyday life.

For Dr. Robert Bostick, orthopedics isn’t just about fixing what’s broken—it’s about restoring freedom, movement, and the joy of an active life. And that’s a mission that moves him every day.

Wigs by Tiffani

Building Confidence One Wig at a Time

HAIRDRESSER NHAT-THUY “TIFFANI” TRAN CALIX’S search for a solution to her postpartum hair loss would not only lead her to a resolution but would take her on a journey that has changed her life and the lives of hundreds of women. Armed with her hairdressing expertise and a mission to help, she launched her business, Wigs by Tiffani, in 2018.

In the past seven years, Tiffani, with

a dedicated team, has built a purposeful and successful business with self-expression and confidence at its core. Reflecting on the privilege it is to give back a person’s selfesteem, she shares, “To be able help someone who has lost their hair, or never even had hair, is a feeling I can’t explain; it’s life changing. When my clients cry happy tears during our consultations, and they tell me I’ve changed their life is something I’ll never get used to.”

Despite years of success, Tiffani remains connected to her purpose. A 2025 WeddingRemember to

AS THIS YEAR’S WEDDING season unfolds, couples embrace fresh trends, timeless elegance, and personalized touches to make their celebrations unforgettable. From fashion to venues and everything in between, the latest inspirations shape picture-perfect “I do” moments.

ENGAGEMENT RINGS: TIMELESS BEAUTY MEETS MODERN ELEGANCE

Selecting an engagement ring is a personal journey, and in 2025, couples are embracing designs that blend classic refinement with contemporary flair. For couples looking to procure the perfect engagement ring, Boudreaux’s Jewelers offers timeless elegance and modern styles that define 2025’s bridal styles.

Let’s Make Plans.

Boudreaux’s Jewelers.

Elongated diamond shapes continue to captivate, with oval diamonds leading the way, followed by the sleek sophistication of emerald cuts and the brilliance of radiant diamonds. Classic designs, such as three-stone engagement rings with detailed diamond galleries, are also expected to shine this season, offering understated beauty and intricate craftsmanship.

Boudreaux’s offers a personalized experience, helping couples find or create a ring that reflects their style and

budget. “We have an entire manufacturing side to our business taking place behind the scenes, using the latest training, tools, and, now, technology to be able to bring any project to life,” adds Brandon Boudreaux.

With expert craftsmanship and a personalized touch, Boudreaux’s Jewelers brings unique engagement ring visions to life.

ELEGANT WEDDING JEWELRY & GIFTS

Beyond the engagement ring and wedding band, wedding jewelry is key in completing the bride’s look. “For the bride on her wedding day photos, I choose pieces that fit in the something old, something new, something blue tradition that some brides like to follow,” notes Brandy Whisnant of Wellington & Co. Fine Jewelry. For a touch of something blue, sapphire-accented pieces are a beautiful and timeless choice.

Personalized jewelry—such as monogrammed lockets or bracelets engraved with the couple’s wedding date—is a meaningful gift for the bridal party and a beautiful keepsake from the groom to his bride. For the groom, an engraved luxury watch from his bride is an enduring memento. Cuff links suggest sophistication and timeless elegance, making them the perfect gift for groomsmen.

Incorporating meaningful jewelry into your wedding ensemble enhances your bridal look and creates lasting memories for you and your bridal party. Wellington & Co. Fine Jewelry offers diverse pieces, ensuring every bride and her attendants shine on the big day.

WEDDING GOWNS: CLASSIC ROMANCE MEETS MODERN TRENDS

Pedram Couture is setting the tone for 2025 bridal fashion with designs that celebrate romance,

individuality, and New Orleans’ timeless charm. Drawing inspiration from the city’s rich culture, Pedram infuses his gowns with intricate lace reminiscent of French Quarter balconies, fluid silhouettes that echo the rhythm of the streets, and an air of elegance that embodies Southern sophistication.

This year’s bridal trends embrace versatility and bold textures, featuring convertible gowns with detachable sleeves and capes, striking 3D florals, feathered embellishments, and sleek minimalist designs with modern asymmetry and unexpected cutouts. For brides looking beyond traditional white, soft blush and pastel hues offer a fresh, contemporary alternative.

Every custom Pedram Couture gown begins with a personal consultation, ensuring that each bride’s vision comes to life. Pedram advises, “Close your eyes and picture yourself walking down the aisle—that image is the key to finding your perfect dress. Trust your instincts and enjoy the process.”

With Pedram Couture, every gown is more than just a dress—it’s a handcrafted masterpiece designed to capture the bride’s style, personality, and unforgettable moments.

WEDDING BANDS: ALWAYS A SYMBOL OF FOREVER

The wedding band dates back to ancient Egypt, where couples exchanged rings made of reeds or leather to symbolize eternal love and commitment. Today, couples seek designs that reflect their unique bond, with less traditional bands.

Symmetry Jewelers describes a trend in minimalist designs with delicate details, such as micro-pavé or milgrain edges. These features are popular with couples who prefer understated elegance. Some couples also prefer personalized touches, such as hidden gemstones or engravings, to reflect their individuality.

Symmetry also shares a growing interest in stackable bands, which allow couples to mix metals and textures over time. For the groom’s wedding band,

alternative materials like titanium, tantalum, and zirconium are gaining popularity due to their durability and modern look.

At Symmetry Jewelers, they specialize in crafting personalized wedding bands, ensuring each piece reflects the couple’s distinctive style.

PLANNING THE PERFECT WEDDING: INSIGHTS FROM TOP WEDDING PLANNERS

In the ever-evolving world of weddings, 2025 is shaping up to be a year filled with vibrant colors, personalized details, and guest experiences. Thanks

to expert wedding planners Cristin Quick, Let’s Make Plans owner, and Ashleigh Rougelot of Ashleigh Elizabeth Weddings and Events, we uncover the latest trends and essential advice for couples preparing for their big day.

Color is making a major comeback! “Truthfully, I am seeing more COLOR! And I LOVE it,” shares Cristin. “Most couples want a clean, classic, traditional look that will be timeless, but lately, they’re opting for vibrant choices to make their wedding stand out.”

Ashleigh Rougelot agrees, adding that integrating a couple’s color palette throughout the wedding—via florals, lighting, furniture, and linens—creates an atmosphere that reflects their individuality. “The guest experience begins from the moment they receive the’ Save the Date’and continues as they enter the ceremony space, instantly feeling immersed in the couple’s vision,” she explains.

Another rising trend? Custom dance floors. “This, along with incorporating special crests or symbols meaningful to the couple, transforms the dance floor into a stunning centerpiece,” notes Cristin.

While timelines vary depending on the couple’s vision, Ashleigh suggests an ideal planning period of 12-18 months. “The first key is to secure vendors outside the venue: the planner, photographer, and reception entertainment. These set the tone for the entire event.”

Cristin emphasizes flexibility, noting that weddings can come together beautifully even in a shorter time

frame. “In 2024, we planned a wedding in four weeks— and it was AMAZING! That bride wasn’t picky about her vendors; she just gave me a budget to work with. But a 9-14 months timeline is the sweet spot for those wanting specific details and vendors.”

A fresh addition to wedding vendor teams, content creators capture candid moments throughout the day. “Unlike photographers and videographers, they let the bride and family fully enjoy the celebration—then wake up to real-time memories the next day,” says Ashleigh.

As 2025 ushers in bold choices and personal touches, working with the right planner can make all the difference in creating a seamless, unforgettable celebration. Whether you’re drawn to bright florals, custom dance floors, or innovative content creation, these experts are ready to bring your vision to life.

WEDDING & RECEPTION DÉCOR: PERSONALIZATION AND ELEGANCE

From grand, gilded designs to minimalist elegance, the details chosen for the ceremony and reception create an atmosphere that lingers in guests’ memories long after the celebration ends.

Weddings in 2025 embrace a balance of grandeur and simplicity, with couples opting for décor that makes a statement but timeless. Maitee Gomez of Royal Weddings and Events notes that the current trend leans heavily toward added drama and opulence. “We’ve entered the gilded and oversized era,” Maitee explains. “Clients are gravitating toward gold tablescapes, oversized candelabras, and dramatic floral installations that create breathtaking, immersive settings.” These bold choices add a regal touch to ceremonies and receptions, elevating the look to the next level.

However, a minimalist trend is also emerging. Many couples prefer a clean, refined look, incorporating clear décor elements, greenery accents, and delicate, dainty details. This approach brings a fresh, modern feel while maintaining sophistication.

Whether couples choose extravagant gold embellishments or understated greenery and simplicity, the theme for 2025 is personalization—allowing every wedding to reflect the couple’s distinct style.

IN Love & Marriage

Kaitlyn & Mason

September 21 was a day filled with love, tradition, and unforgettable moments as Kaitlyn and Mason Hornsby exchanged vows at Southern Oaks, a place of special significance for the bride. Standing where her parents had said “I do” 29 years ago, Kaitlyn walked down the aisle in a stunning strapless A-line gown from Linen Jolie Bridal. While waiting for his bride, Mason looked dapper in black tuxedo pants and a white jacket from Top Hat Tuxedos.

Kaitlyn and Mason’s friends and family stood by their side with love and support. Her bridesmaids in elegant Jasmine Halter Maxi Dresses in black from Show Me Your Mumu. Mason’s groomsmen donned classic black tuxedos from Tuxedos To Geaux.

Their ceremony was a heartfelt celebration officiated by close family friend Brian Henly. Beautiful floral arrangements by Becky Hornsby of BelleBeck Designs adorned the space with playa blanca roses, baby breath, and delphinium, setting the scene for a

romantic and personal exchange of vows. The celebration continued at Southern Oaks, where guests enjoyed an incredible spread, including pecanencrusted chicken, chicken and waffles, gumbo, and shrimp and grits. The centerpiece of the dessert table was a breathtaking wedding cake from Zoe’s Bakery, accompanied by a groom’s cake shaped like their beloved dog, Annie—who was born on the day they got engaged. Music set the tone for the night, with a DJ keeping guests dancing. Highlights included a surprise flash mob by the bride’s father, a family kick line to “New York, New York,” and a heartfelt moment when “Unwritten” played during the cake-cutting. Aperture Photos Co. captured it all beautifully.

Kaitlyn and Mason’s wedding seamlessly blended love, family, and tradition. After a magical exit in a horse-drawn carriage and a lively jazz band second line, they honeymooned in Aruba.

Homemade Strawberry Shortcake

STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE IS A CLASSIC, simple, and refreshing dessert. This cake is airy and delicate, yet it carries the rich, satisfying flavor of a classic pound cake.

A single-layer vanilla cake topped with a generous layer of homemade whipped cream, a third layer of fresh strawberries, all crowned with a fluffy, snowy-white finish of whipped cream is as delicious as it is refreshing.

Strawberry Shortcake is ideal for serving your family on Valentine’s Week, or this is the perfect dessert to bring to a Mardi Gras parade route party.

CAKE LAYERS & INGREDIENTS

1st Layer: Vanilla Cake

2 1/4 cups sifted flour

1 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp salt

8 oz unsalted butter, softened

1 cup sugar

2 eggs

1 tsp vanilla

3/4 cup milk

2nd Layer: Homemade Whipped Cream

2 cups heavy cream

3 tbsp sugar

3rd Layer: Strawberry Topping

Whole and sliced strawberries

Optional: Drizzle with honey or maple syrup before adding whipped cream.

CREAM CAKE DIRECTIONS

Cake: Preheat oven to 325°F. Whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt; set aside. Cream butter and sugar in a mixer until combined. Add eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla. Alternate adding the flour mixture and milk, beginning and ending with flour. Grease an 8–9 inch pan with butter, pour in batter, and tap to remove air bubbles. Bake for 45–48 minutes. Test with a toothpick; cool for 30 minutes. Assembly: Whip heavy cream and sugar until stiff peaks form. Spread whipped cream over cooled cake and top with strawberries.

Night out on the Northshore

IF YOU ARE LOOKING for a perfect weekend getaway, the Mandeville and Covington areas of the Northshore have everything needed for a fun and memorable experience. Let us guide you in exploring some of the best the Northshore offers. We will showcase Nouvalari’s, The Gloriette, Whiskey Tavern, and the Southern Hotel. We suggest starting your first evening at Nouvalari’s. Located at 246 Girod Street in the heart of Old Mandeville, Nuvolari’s has earned a reputation as a culinary destination that offers more than just a meal—it provides an experience. With its blend of traditional Italian recipes, a relaxed yet sophisticated atmosphere, and commitment to excellence, Nuvolari’s has become a beloved establishment for locals and visitors alike. Whether you’re looking for a romantic dinner for two or a lively gathering with friends, this restaurant offers something for every palate. Nuvolari’s is under new ownership and boy, the changes are noticeable. The service was impeccable, the atmosphere was lively, and, most importantly, the food was back on point. After having a drink at the bar, we were shown our table and began our feast. Nuvolari’s draws inspiration from the rich culinary traditions of Italy, emphasizing fresh, highquality ingredients, simple yet flavorful preparations,

and a warm, welcoming ambiance. The restaurant’s menu features an array of dishes that span the spectrum of Italian cuisine, from hand-crafted pasta to classic seafood and tender meats, all prepared with a contemporary twist. We started with an antipasti course of warm olives and fennel drizzled in olive oil, chicken liver pate, and beef short rib arancini balls. To say these starters blew us away is an understatement. The entrées were equally as impressive. I usually have two rules I stand by when I dine at Italian restaurants: 1.) If there’s a veal dish, get it. 2.) If grilled pompano is topped with jumbo lump crabmeat, skip rule number 1 and go with rule number 2. I chose number 2, and, well, let’s just say that I was glad I did. The pompano was perfectly grilled and topped with a huge portion of Louisiana’s nectar of the gods – jumbo lump crabmeat. It was served over a bed of perfect-grilled asparagus. Dessert featured an assortment of sorbets and, of course, tiramisu.

Nuvolari’s is more than just a place to eat—it’s a celebration of Italian cuisine and a beloved spot in the Northshore dining scene. With its delicious menu, inviting atmosphere, and exceptional service, it’s no wonder this restaurant continues to be a favorite among those who crave authentic, high-quality Italian food.

Short Rib Arincini balls from Nuvolari’s.

Whether you’re a local or visiting the area, a meal at Nuvolari’s is an experience you won’t soon forget.

Once your meal at Nuvolari’s is finished, we recommend checking out one of Covington’s hottest new music venues, Whiskey Tavern. Located at 600 Highway 190 just north of Interstate 12 in Covington, Whiskey Tavern is a hot, new restaurant and bourbon bar offering live music with local and national bands. This swank new establishment is more of an upscale club than your typical dance hall. A centrally-located bar can be found in the main room. Special “VIP” half-moon booths are present along each side of the bar, which also overlooks the main stage. These booths can accommodate up to six guests and offer a more intimate and relaxed experience. On

each side of the main stage are yet more VIP areas. These private areas offer couches and great views of the stage. Behind the stage, in a separate room, is the real hidden treasure – a “VIP” speak-easy-style bar and restaurant awaits those who are members of Whiskey Tavern’s Diamond Club. Members can enjoy a more private and upscale experience in this Club, which offers a first-class bar and a more upscale menu of food to dine on before concerts. We felt like we were in a swanky Manhattan nightclub and not in the middle of Covington.

Whiskey Tavern isn’t just about drinks and music. It’s also known for its exceptional food. The menu is a love letter to Southern comfort cuisine, offering a variety of dishes that satisfy both the soul and the palate. Whether you’re in the mood for a light bite or a hearty meal, Whiskey Tavern has you covered, and if you are craving one of its famous craft burgers for lunch, you can grab one because Whiskey Tavern just recently expanded its hours to offer lunch on Wednesday through Friday.

As discussed, in addition to great food and drinks, Whiskey Tavern regularly hosts live music and special events, making it a popular gathering spot for Covington residents and out-of-town visitors. Bands performed at Whiskey Tavern include Bag of Donuts, The Molly Ringwalds, and the Chase Tyler Band.

Top: Whiskey Tavern. Above: The Southern Hotel. Left: Grilled Pompano from Nuvolari’s.

Whiskey Tavern’s schedule of events often includes trivia nights, cocktail classes, and whiskey tastings, offering something for every taste. These events help foster a sense of community, making Whiskey Tavern a place to eat and drink and a vibrant social hub where people can come together, relax, and have fun.

Whiskey Tavern in Covington offers more than just a place to grab a drink; it’s an experience. Whiskey Tavern provides the perfect blend of tradition, creativity, and charm, from its carefully crafted cocktails and expansive whiskey selection to its Southern-inspired comfort food and lively atmosphere. Whether you’re a whiskey connoisseur, a craft beer enthusiast, or simply someone looking for a great place to unwind and catch a great band, Whiskey Tavern is a local treasure that promises to deliver every time.

At this point, we do not recommend heading back across the Causeway. Instead, we highly recommend staying at the Southern Hotel in downtown Covington for a night or two. The Southern Hotel offers a luxurious atmosphere where guests can enjoy an elevated experience without sacrificing comfort. The hotel’s design beautifully balances its historic features with modern touches. The interiors boast high ceilings, rich hardwood floors, and large windows that allow natural light to flood the rooms. The aesthetic is a harmonious blend of vintage Southern style with contemporary furnishings and décor, creating a warm and inviting ambiance.

Each guest room at The Southern Hotel is meticulously designed with comfort in mind. From spacious suites to cozy, well-appointed rooms, every detail is thoughtfully curated to provide guests a restful and pleasant stay. The rooms feature plush bedding and modern amenities like flat-screen televisions, minibars, and elegant bathroom fixtures, ensuring guests feel pampered and at home. Some rooms also offer picturesque views of Covington’s historic downtown, adding an extra layer of charm to the experience. The

hotel also recently opened The Garden House adjacent to the Southern Hotel, which offers spacious and luxurious private suites. We enjoyed the elegance of our stay in our suite inside The Garden House.

The Southern Hotel offers a range of amenities designed to enhance the guest experience. One of the main attractions is the Cypress Bar. This comfortable backlit bar offers an upscale bar experience to guests and locals alike, featuring bourbon specials on Wednesdays and Hers Day every Thursday; the Cypress Bar has everything you expect in a first-class bar. After enjoying a delicious Old-Fashioned or French 75, take a short walk to The Gloriette, a fine dining restaurant inside the Southern Hotel. The Gloriette has been a welcomed French restaurant offering local and French-inspired cuisine. Our scrumptious meal began with a delicate poached pear salad with a blue cheese mousse, arugula, and spiced pecans. Our entrée featured slow-roasted duck breast with blackberries, marinated kale, and butternut squash. For a truly French experience, we also recommend the beef short rib bourguignon served on top of an addictive crispy potato cake. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. Our server, Destin, has been with The Gloriette since its inception, and she is one of the premier servers on the Northshore. She will answer all your questions, provide friendly conversation, and steer you in the right direction while you navigate the menu. We cannot recommend the Southern Hotel experience enough. We are confident that you will not be disappointed.

Take it from us. The Northshore has you covered if you are craving a short weekend getaway. Indulge in a stay at The Southern Hotel and dine at some of the great restaurants the Northshore offers. You can’t go wrong at Nuvolari’s, Whiskey Tavern, or The Gloriette. Hit all three during your stay and sleep like a baby inside the Southern Hotel. What are you waiting for?

ANNUNCIATION, located in New Orleans’ Warehouse District, is housed in a meticulously restored turn-ofthe-century warehouse. Blending modern touches with traditional design, the restaurant showcases a menu that expertly balances the tradition of contemporary Creole and Southern cuisine.

While classic favorites like Shrimp Étouffée and Crawfish Monica are found on the menu, ANNUNCIATION also elevates its fare with fresh, locally sourced seafood and seasonal ingredients that capture the essence of South Louisiana cuisine. Freshness is at the core of ANNUNCIATION’s food philosophy, with every dish made to order. Chef Jose Castaneda adds, ”We enjoy working with our local purveyors when looking for the ingredients to include Louisiana Soft Shell crabs, oysters, and shrimp, as well as fresh seasonal produce such as Louisiana strawberries in spring and beets and greens in winter.”

Among the standout dishes at ANNUNCIATION is the Grilled Lamb Chops, served with garlicky potato mash and green beans. This is a guest favorite due to its bold flavors

and the comfort food element. The Lemon Champagne Cocktail enhances the dining experience. This delightful libation is a bubbly blend of sweet and tart flavors that sets the perfect celebratory tone. The Housemade Cheesecake drizzled with orange liqueur is a must-try indulgence.

Beyond the cuisine, ANNUCIATION delivers a memorable experience through impeccable service.

Look for creations by local artists throughout, adding to the space’s vibe with quintessential New Orleans charm.

At ANNUNCIATION, every dish is a delight of New Orleans’ finest bounty, presented in an atmosphere of unmistakable charm that can only be found in New Orleans.
