the FOLDS FAMILY

We want to welcome the Folds, our Cover Family, who moved from South Florida to The Sanctuary in October 2024. Parents Josh and DeAnna, their five children, and their beloved Pomeranian, Foxy, now call Mandeville home. Initially drawn to the neighborhood for its location, they have since fallen in love with its picturesque surroundings and welcoming community.

As they considered their move from Palm City, Florida, Josh and DeAnna sought a home with a sense of community, close to the kid’s schools and an easy commute to Josh’s New Orleans office. It was rather an easy search; one might say it was love at first sight for Josh and DeAnna. “It was the first neighborhood we saw from our realtor, and we were sold right away. It is a stunning neighborhood with great convenience

to everything,” the couple notes.

The Folds relocated to Louisiana when Josh was asked to join Fidelity Bank as chief banking officer. With 28 years of banking expertise, he is excited to join the 115-year-old community bank as it transitions from a mutual bank to a publicly traded company. Josh’s vision is helping drive Fidelity Bank’s growth throughout the Southeast, ensuring its legacy of local engagement remains strong. DeAnna, a former real estate and banking professional, is now enjoying focusing on running their new home and being a stay-at-home mom.

In their new home, the Folds have created a place where their shared connection and comfort are essential. They describe their home as modern but cozy, with details like wainscoting, fireplaces, and

recharge, and reconnect.

Relaxing is important these days, as each member of the Folds family is thriving in their unique pursuits. Twenty-three-year-old son, Tyler, remains in Florida, where his entrepreneurial spirit led to the opening of Cold Shoulder Kicks, a high-end sneaker boutique with two locations. Damon, 18, has taken his love for basketball to Curry College in Boston. London, 16, and Jordan, 9, are getting settled in their new homes and schools: London, a sophomore at Mandeville High, and Jordan, 9, a third grader at Pontchartrain Elementary. All the Folds children enjoy watching and playing sports, particularly basketball and football.

luxurious bathroom finishes that they love. The home’s crown molding and sleek white design also create a bright and inviting atmosphere. Thanks to the builder’s thoughtful design, the primary bedroom is also a favorite. “ With the warmth feeling it brings, we say our master bedroom feels like being at a hotel; the builder did a great job with the buildout and classy finishes,” added the couple. Their favorite gathering spots include the eat-in kitchen, where phones are put away, and family meals foster meaningful conversations about the day’s events. The game room is another space that has become a family hub. Gathering in the game room means camaraderie and unwinding to watch some sports. For the Folds, their home is more than a physical space; it is a haven where they can relax, k

While their interests are distinct, each enjoys family time when they are all together. Activities like family dinners, exploring the area, and attending services at the Church of the King have become important in their lives. They also enjoy the features

of their new neighborhood, such as the park and green space, and walks on the nature trails. They have discovered the nearby Lakefront, which is becoming another favorite spot.

When it comes to dining, the family has discovered several local favorites. From Habernaro’s and Leonardo’s for casual meals to Del Porto, Keith Young’s, and Papillion’s for special date nights. The offerings in the Northshore’s culinary scene have not disappointed the Folds. Nothing, however, can beat DeAnna’s Italian cooking. A treat for the whole family, she taps into her Italian heritage and makes some unforgettable family favorites.

Although they’ve settled into The Sanctuary, the Folds still enjoy traveling to their favorite vacation destinations, including the beaches along Florida’s 30A and the locales of Southern California.

They chose”Keep Me in the Moment” by Jeremy Camp as their family theme song. This song reflects their commitment to appreciating the present and staying grounded in what truly matters. It also serves as a reminder to cherish time with loved ones, stay focused on their faith, and embrace the gift of each day.

As the Folds family settles into their new chapter, their story highlights family and connections with new people. From professional milestones and school achievements to simple moments of laughter and togetherness, they are making the most of every new opportunity and enjoying making The Sanctuary their home base.

GARDENING TIPS BY SANCTUARY RESIDENT

Essential Winterizing Tips for a Healthy Lawn and Garden in the Spring

As winter approaches, it’s time to prepare your garden and lawn for the colder months ahead. By taking the proper steps now, you can ensure a smooth transition from winter dormancy to a lush, thriving landscape in spring. Here are some essential tips for winterizing your outdoor spaces:

1. Protect Your Sprinkler System

Cold temperatures can wreak havoc on your sprinkler system if it’s not properly winterized. Follow these steps to keep it safe:

• Shut off the water supply and drain the system to prevent freezing.

• Protect your backflow preventer with an insulated backflow cover. These easy-to-use covers slip right over the device, eliminating the need for traditional wrapping and ensuring reliable freeze protection.

2. Add Lime to Your Lawn and Garden

Late fall and early winter are ideal times to apply lime to your lawn and garden. On the Northshore, where soil is naturally acidic, lime helps raise the soil’s pH, making nutrients more accessible to your grass.

• Lime works over several months to amend the soil, ensuring it’s ready for planting and growth when warmer weather returns.

• This process enhances your lawn’s ability to transition from winter dormancy to vibrant spring growth.

3. Plant Winter Rye Grass

For those who want a green lawn year-round, consider

overseeding with winter rye grass.

• Champion GQ Perennial Rye is a top choice for its durability and vibrant green color.

• Rye grass thrives in cooler temperatures, keeping your lawn lush throughout the winter and into early spring.

• When temperatures rise in April, the rye will naturally die off, allowing your permanent grass to take center stage.

Prepare Now for a Beautiful Spring

Winterizing your garden and lawn with these simple steps will make for a healthier and more beautiful landscape come spring. Whether safeguarding your sprinkler system, amending your soil with lime, or enjoying the benefits of winter rye grass, a little effort now goes a long way toward a stunning outdoor space next season.

Trio Pets Beignet, Beau, and Roux sanctuary residents GEIER family

The Geier family wouldn’t be complete without their three beloved pups: Beignet, Beau, and Roux. Each has a unique personality and story that adds to the charm of the Geier’s home. Beignet, a 9-year-old Bichon Frise, joined the family first, fulfilling Liliana’s dream of having this sweet, fluffy breed. Four years ago, Roux, a ginger-colored toy poodle, arrived to match Annabella’s love for his vibrant coloring. Most recently, Beau, another Bichon Frise, became part of the pack just a year ago, bringing youthful energy to the group.

Physically, the dogs are as distinct as their personalities. Beignet and Beau are all white with soft, curly fur and dark eyes, while Roux’s ginger-red coat with a hint of white sets him apart. Beignet is the calm and laid-back elder statesman of the group, while Beau is a sweet and energetic pup who loves to play fetch and support Liliana’s pageant preparations.

Despite being the smallest, Roux is brimming with personality and often acts as the boss of the bunch.

Each pup has a favorite “person” in the family. Beignet gravitates towards Melanie, Beau is Liliana’s constant companion when she is home from college, and Roux prefers to stay close to Annabella, often seeking gingercolored toys that match his coat. Whether riding in the car, enjoying boat rides, or being part of the household’s bustling activities, these three babies bring endless joy to the Geiers.

Their quirks make them even more endearing. Beignet enjoys licking spray tans, while Beau often acts as an enthusiastic audience when Liliana practices her baton twirling. Roux may be small, but he rules the roost with his bossy attitude. Together, Beignet, Beau, and Roux are treasured members of the Geier family, each with a special place in their hearts.

Dr. G. with VetNaturally

VetNaturally Skin and Coat Tips VetNaturally Skin and Coat Tips

Please Note: if your dog has any pre-existing gastrointestinal problems like pancreatitis or a dog with a “sensitive stomach,” we recommend involving your veterinarian in any food transitions.

1.) Make sure your pet’s diet has some moisture

Dry dog food is dehydrating and inflammatory to your pet. An easy way to transition from dry dog food is to buy the canned version of what your pet is already eating. Start with 1/3 cup of canned swapped out for 1/3 cup dry. If your pet tolerates this, slowly increase half your dog’s diet to moist and half dry. VERY IMPORTANT: Weigh your dog weekly for 2 months during this transition so you can note any weight loss or weight gain and make adjustments as necessary.

2.) Make sure your pet is on proper flea protection and that it’s working

All the products in the world won’t help a pet actively bitten by fleas. It is that simple, so make sure you give your pet the proper flea protection for its size and check your pet to ensure it works.

3.) Make sure your pet’s skin is well hydrated

VetNaturally carries an excellent hydration spray formulated by Dr. G. First, carefully shake the bottle to mix the ingredients. Next, spray a gentle mist above your dog and let it fall on the coat. The coat should not feel wet, only misted. Using the enclosed brush, gently brush your dog’s coat toward hair growth, never against

it, while applying the hydration spray. Do this morning and evening. We recommend doing this around feeding time to help you remember twice a day.

4.) Apply Dr. G’s skin serum

When red spots, crusts, or itchy skin appear, Dr. G’s skin serum is your go-to. It can also be applied to the inside of your dog’s ears. Spray a small amount in your hand and rub it on the inside of the ear (not down the canal) twice daily. We recommend you apply this after the hydration spray.

5.) Using anti-itch spray

Carefully remove the straw and gently slide it into the opening of the silver bottle. It can be tricky; keep gently twisting until the tube glides in. There are no replacement tubes available, so please glide gently. Use this rescue gel for any areas where you see your dog itching. Do not apply near the vagina, penis, testicles, eyes, or bottom of feet.

6.) Skin benefits with omega oil

After the plastic safety seal is broken, the omega oil must be stored in your refrigerator. The dose for your dog is listed on the label by weight. You will place this in your dog’s food once a day. Omegas have substantial skin benefits.

Treating skin is a very labor-intensive process. We use special tubs, medical therapy baths, herbs, acupuncture, and more to heal our patients. Our products listed above are some of our core treatments and can only improve your pet’s overall skin health. When you know better, you do better.

ST PAUL’S CORE PACK PROGRAM

Embracing Inclusion and Fostering

Since its founding, St. Paul’s Catholic School has upheld the principles of community, respect, and inclusion. Guided by the foundational objective of “The Lasallian Family,” the school has remained dedicated to embracing diversity and ensuring everyone feels a sense of belonging. In 2017, this commitment took a significant step forward by introducing The Catholic Opportunity for Responsive Education (CORE) program. Created through the efforts of the Archdiocese of New Orleans Office of Catholic Schools, St. Paul’s administrators, teachers, and parents, the initiative has profoundly impacted students with developmental disabilities in a fully

inclusive, faith-driven environment and given extraordinary possibilities.

Students in the CORE Pack have opportunities to grow socially, spiritually, and academically while fully integrating into school life. This approach has proven successful on every level, benefiting the participants and the entire school community. One of the program’s most significant benefits is enabling all students to develop a deeper appreciation for diversity. The message to the St. Paul’s Brotherhood is clear: Every person possesses unique gifts and talents and should be celebrated.

The CORE Pack began with five students and has continued to grow; this year, nine young men are in the program. The focus and key to its success is meeting each student’s unique needs by thoroughly understanding their challenges and strengths, setting clear standards and goals to track their achievements, and using tailored methods to evaluate progress. This personalized approach has been the difference for Jennifer Martinez, whose son John is a junior in the program. “The curriculum is tailored to John, and John’s strengths, interests, and personal achievements are fostered, celebrated, and embraced,” she shares.

Parents Marcy and Stephen Donham’s son Luke was part of that first class of five students the year the program began. It was a pivotal moment for the Donhams, who were unsure of Luke’s educational future once he left the familiar and adaptive environment of Our Lady of the Lake School. “When I first met with Brother Ray to discuss the Core Pack, he asked, ‘What are your goals for Luke?’ My answer was simple: I want Luke to be happy, safe, and reach his highest potential.” Marcy Donham recalls.

Brotherhood

Being part of St. Paul’s Brotherhood is also key to the CORE Pack’s success. Jennifer Martinez notes the significance of this camaraderie for her son, John. “He is part of a Brotherhood and truly feels a sense of belonging thanks to the amazing teachers, coaches, mentors, and students at St. Paul’s.” The program reflects the school’s commitment to living out the Lasallian mission by fully integrating these students into every aspect of the St. Paul’s experience.

Through the CORE Pack program, St. Paul’s provides young men with a well-rounded education focusing on every aspect of development. The skills acquired will serve each young man for a lifetime. The Donhams note the confidence and life-changing skills their son Luke gained from participating in the program. “The positive impact of the CORE Pack was evident in every step of Luke’s journey. During his junior and senior years, he completed a job training program at St. Paul’s, which equipped him with the tools and life skills that he continues to apply today as an employee of Maher Animal Hospital. Being a part of the SPS brotherhood is a gift, and I am forever grateful that Luke had such an excellent high school experience.”

Through this life-changing initiative, St. Paul’s continues to lead the way in providing a faith-based, inclusive education that transforms lives and strengthens the bonds of the Brotherhood. Jennifer Martinez sums it up with a deep appreciation: “My heart bursts every time we’re with the CORE Pack; it’s like a dream, and I know all the parents feel the same. We are beyond grateful.”

The program’s mission is to give students with developmental disabilities the tools and opportunities to foster independence and self-determination while participating fully in the vibrant Lasallian community. Without question, it is a mission that St. Paul’s has accomplished.
