Happy Halloween! Happy Thanksgiving! Geaux Saints!

Jessica Marasco Illes

I am a native New Orleanian who attended Dominican High School and NOCCA. Afterward, I found myself at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, LA, home of Steel Magnolias.

I moved to New York City two months before Hurricane Katrina, where I stayed until well after the Saints won the Super Bowl. It was living in New York during the 2007-2008 financial crisis that piqued my interest in the stock market.

I enjoy learning about my client’s needs so that we can develop a strategy to help achieve long-term financial goals. Whether you want to plan for retirement, save for college, reduce your tax bills, or plan your estate, you can expect personalized service and long-term investment strategies instead of the latest investment fads. Because Edward Jones is a privately owned company, I truly work for my clients – not shareholders – when giving advice and creating a strategy.

When not working for my clients, I am the wife of an audio mixer for film and television, Derek, and a mother to Scarlett and Grey, and my rescue fur babies, Baby Colston, and Buster. Scarlett attends Ecole Bilingue, where I am involved with the Parent Association. I am a lover of Mardi Gras, and I ride in Cleopatra and march with the Krewe of Dolly! When not on a parade route or at a festival, you can find our family walking through the streets of our Old Gretna neighborhood. Together, we love to travel (Dollywood is currently one of our favorite places), cheer on our beloved Saints, and soak up everything that New Orleans and Old Gretna have to offer! In addition to the above, I am a member of The Touchdown Club of New Orleans, Fidelity Bank POWER, the Gretna Economic Development Association, the Irish Network New Orleans, and I formerly served as the president of the St. Martin’s Episcopal’s Moms’ Club.

SPENDING A LITTLE TIME with Kevin Gillentine in his Magazine Street gallery was a lovely treat for several reasons, including experiencing his three West Highland Terriers: Maisie, Lily, and Mr. Achille. Kevin’s bright and airy gallery is a soothing and comfortable space adorned with large paintings of his abstract and landscape pieces that reflect a peaceful calm.

Born and raised in Mississippi, Kevin’s artistic interest emerged in his teen years when he began drawing. His talent was recognized early when he created his first painting in art class and was approached by another student seeking to buy it. Ultimately, he sold that painting, but the confidence he gained from the recognition of his talent far outweighed the cash.

After earning his BA from Mississippi State and pursuing graduate studies at the University of Tennessee and FIT in New York City, Kevin launched his career in the vibrant New York art scene. Soon, he found himself engulfed in a world where visual art collided with performance art, painting fabric for costumes in movies and on Broadway sets at Izquierdo Studio. This was a pivotal time and experience in his art career, as it laid the foundation for

the artist he would become.

Kevin honed his creative skills in NYC but decided to focus on fine art and design, which would bring him to New Orleans. Over the years, his work has garnered attention from collectors worldwide, including celebrities, sports figures, and CEOs. His art has also appeared nationwide in television, film, and high-end homes.

When discussing his artistic process, Kevin is candid. “I have an idea. I fail miserably. Then I take my failure and reimagine it into something that’s usually way better than my original idea,” he explains. This mindset underscores his resilience and willingness to embrace imperfection as a noteworthy part of his process, resulting in stunning works that evoke a peaceful, almost

nostalgic feeling, especially in his landscapes. There is a reason for Kevin to center on the minimal, ethereal, and simple aesthetic he cultivates. “I’ve struggled with panic and anxiety all my life,” he shares. “I use my art to create peacefulness.”

Kevin’s landscapes draw from cherished memories of his youth spent on the water. Whether creeks, lakes, or rivers, each holds a special significance tied to family time. Despite modest means, boating played a central role in his upbringing, creating lasting impressions that continue to inspire his art. He vividly recalls these scenes and translates them onto canvas in a muted, dreamlike state, capturing the gentle essence of those moments. His work channels the

tranquility and nostalgia of those days, bringing to life the serene beauty of the places that shaped him. Additionally, light is a major source of inspiration for Kevin, guiding the mood and tone of his pieces.

While his landscapes produce a serene nostalgia, Kevin’s abstract art shifts toward a more introspective exploration through subtle, intentional use of color. This delicate palette adds a soft quality to his abstract compositions, drawing viewers into a space of reflection. Kevin’s abstract art is defined by its subtle yet intentional use of color. He creates compositions that are both minimal and deeply evocative. His delicate palette adds a soft, ethereal quality to his work, inviting viewers to experience introspection.

Kevin hopes those encountering his work for the first time will feel connected. “I put something of myself in each piece, and I’d like to think viewers get a sense of that. From the feedback I’ve gotten over the years, I think they do.”

While he constantly creates new work, he prefers to let the direction of his art evolve naturally. “In my 30+ years of making art, I’ve learned to let ‘what’s next?’ reveal itself,” he notes.

When he isn’t busy painting and seeing after the gallery, Kevin enjoys spending time with his husband and business partner, Vincent Bergeal, and their three Westies, working with ceramics, gardening, cooking, and silk screening.

Kevin Gillentine’s art captures the quiet beauty of the landscapes that have left a lasting mark on him, offering a

timeless blend of remembrance and emotion. His abstract work brings a sense of depth and subtle sophistication that draws viewers into a world of color while still having lines and definition. Despite his many impressive achievements, Kevin remains humble, crediting his years of dedication and persistence as the keys to his significant success.

Forecastingwith Heart

The Southern Charm of Bob Breck

BELOVED RETIRED FOX 8 WEATHER ANCHOR Bob Breck has always been known for his charisma on the air in any weather situation and beyond; however, his journey into meteorology began unexpectedly. As a third-grader in Hammond, Indiana, young Bob was intrigued by the snow falling outside his classroom window, earning him a gentle redirection from his teacher, Mrs. Moose. Her suggestion was to explore a book on weather to better understand the factors that influence weather. This well-received suggestion sparked a lifelong passion that eventually led Bob to the world of meteorology and the dynamic city of New Orleans.

Forecasting in a city with such a unique and often challenging climate was no small feat. Still, Bob enthusiastically embraced it, even when the weather could be “boring” with so many months of hot and humid conditions. However, the occasional threat of a hurricane kept things interesting, and Bob knew how to keep his viewers engaged and informed.

As a self-proclaimed “Damn Yankee,” Bob credits his Southern wife, Brenda, for teaching him the ways of a true Southern gentleman. Through her guidance, he learned the importance of being courteous, attentive, and charming— traits he has carried into his professional and personal life.

Despite the pressures of his career, Bob has always valued giving to others. His commitment to various causes through the years, from the American Lung Association to Big Brothers Big Sisters and currently volunteering at the St. Catherine of Sienna Grief Support group, is truly inspiring. He regards generosity as essential to a fulfilling life and emphasizes, ‘The greatness of any man is the size of his heart. Be a servant for others, comfort them in their afflictions, and you’ll find true peace.’

Now retired, Bob enjoys golfing, fishing, and gardening. His advice to others is simple but profound: Take care of yourself and those you love, for tomorrow is promised to no one.

Bob Breck continues to live by the values of a true Southern gentleman, balancing relaxation with service and always remembering to cherish each day. His journey from a curious child in Indiana to a beloved figure in New Orleans underscores the power of passion, kindness, and a little Southern charm.

Brewing a Love of Community in the Heart of New Orleans

Roy Bruno

PJ’S COFFEE OF NEW ORLEANS

As Roy Bruno approaches the 10-year mark as a PJ’s Coffee franchisee, his experience reflects entrepreneurial passion, dedication to community, and a strong sense of legacy.

Roy’s PJ’s Coffee roots began in college when he worked as a barista. That first position allowed him to work in every corporate PJ’s location. Experiencing the inner workings of each location allowed him to hone his skills and gave him an understanding of the business before he seized the opportunity to open the first individually owned store in the French Quarter. About his first location, Roy notes, “My family had a lot of history on this street; they opened in 1840, [and] 175 years later, I opened my shop,” This store, located on the same block as his ancestor’s iconic restaurant, Antoine’s, affirms his entrepreneurial heritage and devotion to being a true New Orleanian.

Roy’s love for the Crescent City and its people has been the driving force behind his success. His handson approach has earned him numerous accolades, including Rookie Franchisee of the Year and Top Sales Awards. However, it is the everyday interactions, such as welcoming visitors, guiding them to the best local spots, and fostering a positive vibe that Roy values the most. He strongly advocates supporting local schools, the police force, and fellow businesses, noting, “ Supporting local at all costs is very important.” Roy’s commitment to giving back to his community exemplifies his values.

Whether exploring the city on his bike, playing music, or spreading positivity, Roy symbolizes the spirit of New Orleans. He ensures that all three of his PJ’s locations are more than just coffee shops; they reflect the heart and soul of New Orleans.

Bobby Asaro SOUTHERN OAKS

A quick conversation with Mr. Bobby Asaro of Southern Oaks, and you know instantly you are speaking to a true Southern gentleman. For Bobby, manners are not just a formality but a way of life. His elegant approach, which includes impeccable manners, attention to the smallest detail, and refined hospitality, sets the tone for everyone who is a part of the idyllic wedding venue, Southern Oaks.

A former vascular technician who moonlighted on the weekends shooting wedding photos, Bobby had a unique perspective on wedding venues in New Orleans. Despite the many appealing options, he envisioned a space that offered personalized service, where guests would feel valued and at ease through refined, thoughtful touches, all within a captivating atmosphere. One evening, he shared this exclusive vision with his wife, Sue, as he sketched it on a napkin. Ready for the challenge and what lay ahead, the couple took a chance on Bobby’s vision, and for thirtyseven years, they have been making dreams come true at Southern Oaks.

“As soon as you go through the gates, you know you are someplace special,” Bobby proudly notes about the pristine and stunning Southern Oaks property. The classic Southern-style mansion manifests timeless elegance, while its updated, modern interior boasts a bright and airy design.

The Southern Oaks’ aesthetics are breathtaking, but what makes it distinctive is characterized by the details, impeccable manners, and graciously accommodating staff, all at the direction of a genuine Southern Gentleman, Mr. Bobby Asaro.

Expertise from the Ground Up

Kingfish Pools founder Billy Gunzburg has had an appreciation for pools since he started working as a lifeguard in high school. This early experience led him to a job at a swimming pool retail store, where he stocked shelves but quickly demonstrated a talent for sales. In his first year, he became the top salesperson for above-ground pools.

Billy wanted to learn everything he could about the swimming pool industry, so he took a hands-on approach to gain knowledge and experience. Thus, he began cleaning and repairing pools on his off days to learn the industry’s fundamentals. He was also pursuing a marketing degree at the University of New Orleans during this time, but his pool business was growing rapidly. Managing school and two jobs was busy, but Billy embraced it. Looking back, he recalls the joy of first working for himself, “I remember working in the dark with headlamps. I was so excited.”

After Hurricane Katrina, Billy became even busier, draining and renovating flooded pools. His business was doing well, and he reveled in his self-employed status but found himself at a crossroads. With only three semesters left in college, Billy boldly decided to focus on his dream. “I couldn’t wait another day to become the best swimming pool company New Orleans had ever seen,” he says of those early years. His dream became a reality, and Kingfish Pools was born.

Setting itself apart, Kingfish Pools takes pride in its all-inhouse construction team, a concept Billy modeled after successful

companies in Florida, California, and Arizona. Unlike most pool vendors who outsource various stages of the pool building process, Kingfish Pools manages every part of the building process. “When you Hire Kingfish Pools, we want the customer to have a team under one name to build, renovate, repair, and service your swimming pool,” Billy explains. This approach allows Billy and his team meticulous oversight, ensuring each project meets their high standards. Equipped with its own heavy machinery, Kingfish Pools can build up to two pools a week, making them the largest volume builder in Louisiana.

In terms of design, Billy has noticed a shift towards smaller, geometrically shaped pools featuring amenities like tanning ledges and built-in benches for a more relaxed, spa-like experience. His company takes pride in customizing each pool to match the client’s lifestyle and home aesthetic, creating backyard environments that are an extension of the home. While balancing high-quality materials and customer budgets can be challenging, Billy remains committed to offering top-notch pools that stand the test of time.

When not overseeing Kingfish Pools’ operations, Billy indulges in home renovation projects, a passion that is similar to his love for transforming backyards. He also enjoys boxing, a sport he’s been involved in since childhood.

Billy’s dedication to his skill, personal touch, and innovative design continue to set Kingfish Pools apart in the ever-evolving pool industry.

KINGFISH POOLS

You might say that The Country Club’s Chef Chris Barbata was destined for his culinary calling as soon as he began working at a restaurant in high school as a busboy and prep cook. However, his passion for cooking was ignited by his aunt, Violet Harrington, who ran The Culinary Institute of Louisiana. There, Chef Chris honed his skills and developed a genuine appreciation for local seafood and French-influenced dishes. “It was a real learning experience,” he recalls about those early pivotal days. “My aunt brought me to Juban’s Restaurant, [where I experienced my] first soft shell crab, first fried eggplant, first red remoulade, and first cup of Chicory coffee.” Captivated by these vibrant culinary experiences and armed with the skills to create them and so much more, Chef Chris headed to New Orleans.

After years in some of New Orleans’s top-tier restaurants, Chef Chris found his way to The Country Club and embraced the challenge of creating something new, as the restaurant was in a revival phase. He’s been pleasing palates since, with an emphasis on using local seafood and creating flavors that are unmistakably New Orleans.

Chef Chris believes a chef’s role extends beyond the kitchen and involves the entire team to preserve New Orleans’ culinary heritage, noting, “It is the role of the entire staff to make this happen. It doesn’t just come from the GM/Chef. It takes a lot of caring and effort to keep these traditions alive.” The Country Club has mastered keeping those cultural traditions of New Orleans alive at every level.

When Chef Chris is not crafting dishes by seasoning and layering ingredients, “nothing is off the table in this town,” he enjoys cooking and sharing meals with his wife, Lisa, and friends, especially during football season. The

The Men of Boat Stuf

A Legacy of Family, Integrity and Southern Hospitality

Eric Beier

Jimmy Fisackerly

James Fisackerly, III

BOAT STUF

Founded in 1984 in a shift from the Beier family’s original marine electronics business, Boat Stuf has grown into a rmarine accessories, outboard motors and boat dealership. The company’s growth and reputation have been built by four generations, currently with Eric Beier, the owner; his son-in-law, Jimmy Fisackerly, GM; Jimmy Fisackerly, GM and

his son, James Fisackerly III in sales. With many employees having been with the company for over 30 years, Boat Stuf is more than a business—it’s a family. “From the beginning, the family was taught to treat customers and employees as you would want to be treated,” notes Eric. “From Melvin being the driving force in opening the Port Sulphur store to Payton doing whatever it takes to get the job done, we are fortunate to have them and many key men who showcase our values.”

Whether navigating the challenges of fluctuating economies, oil spills, or hurricanes, these three gentlemen hold fast to guiding principles like integrity, tradition, and hospitality. Underscoring a dedication to their customers, they add, “We don’t

want to sell one boat to a family; we want to take care of all their marine needs for a lifetime. That’s easy with having a great sales, parts, and service team and two Yamaha Master Techs.”

When Eric, Jimmy, and James are not busy at Boat Stuf, they enjoy family time duck and deer hunting and offshore fishing aboard their boat, aptly named Good Stuf. The Beier and Fisackerly men embrace the challenges and rewards of working together, knowing that loyalty runs deep and family is everything.

Crafting Quality: Award Winning Pools

Mike Stanton Sr. Mike Stanton Jr. Nick Stanton

OASIS POOLS AND SPAS

Mike Stanton’s interest in the pool-building industry began as a family affair when his father decided to install a pool in the family home and enlisted Mike and his brothers to help. This hands-on experience laid the foundation for what would become a lifelong career. After completing his studies at Loyola, Mike decided to enter the pool business full-time.

Driven by a desire to deliver the quality and craftsmanship he felt the industry lacked, Mike founded Oasis Pools and Spas. Twentyone years later, it has become a trusted name, thanks to Mike’s commitment to traditional values like respect and integrity, for which he credits his parents.

Today, with his two sons, Mike Jr. and Nick, working alongside him, Mike prioritizes customer satisfaction by staying updated on industry trends and maintaining strict quality control. Mike advises those looking to enter the business that success hinges on deep industry knowledge, craftsmanship, and a foundation built on strong values.

Raising the Bar on Sobriety

Taylor Ohler THE DRYOAK N.A. BOTTLE SHOP

Taylor Ohler’s journey with addiction and ultimate recovery led him to create The DryOak, a non-alcoholic (NA) bottle shop where sobriety and a balanced lifestyle are celebrated. Recognizing the scarcity of nonalcoholic beverage shops and prioritizing mindful living, Taylor created a space where people can purchase quality non-alcoholic beverages.

Knowing that the shop’s success depended on a top-tier inventory, Taylor insisted on only the best. He notes that offering non-alcoholic beverages that don’t compromise taste or experience can be an involved effort., “Finding the right beverages for The DryOak was a careful and deliberate process. I wanted to ensure that what we offered was high quality, innovative and satisfying.”

Achieving its objective, The DryOak N.A. Bottle Shop held its wellreceived grand opening celebration on August 17th.

Taylor’s Southern hospitality is reflected in his welcoming of everyone, no matter their background or stage of life. “...it’s about adding value to people’s lives by offering a meaningful, inclusive social experience.” While the concept of an N.A. bottle shop in an alcohol-centric area initially raised eyebrows, The DryOak has become a place for those seeking something innovative and health-conscious to purchase and enjoy a quality alternative to alcohol.

The 150-Year Legacy of Jacob Schoen & Son

Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Directors has faithfully served its residents as a cornerstone of the New Orleans community for 150 years. Since 1874, the Schoen family has built a legacy deeply rooted in a genuine commitment to the people they serve, adapting to industry changes while preserving New Orleans traditions. Now, in its sixth generation of direct family involvement, it offers personalized care, which is the key to its enduring mission.

The Schoen family attributes the company’s longevity to its active presence in daily operations. Their hands-on approach and dedication to the community have been key factors in maintaining trust and building lasting relationships. “Our family has always gone above and beyond to satisfy the needs of our families,” Patrick Schoen notes.

Throughout its history, Schoen & Son has experienced changes that have shaped what it is today. Among the most significant was the addition of the Schoen Life Insurance Company in 1918, which expanded its role from assisting families during times of loss to helping them prepare in advance. During the Great Depression, purchasing their landmark Canal Street location solidified their presence in the heart of New Orleans, centralizing their operations and allowing them to serve multiple families efficiently.

Further changes include the addition of the J. Garic Schoen Chapel in 2016 to better accommodate families. To preserve its distinctive architectural style, Schoen enlisted

Lachin Architects, the original designers of the 1967 chapel, to ensure a seamless integration with the existing structure. The new chapel holds over 300 people, enhancing its ability to serve the community.

Recognizing the opportunity to extend its services, Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Directors expanded into St. Tammany Parish in 1976 and Jefferson Parish in 1998, further solidifying its reputation as the most trusted funeral home in the region.

Despite its growth, the company remains sincerely rooted in New Orleans’ traditions. “Every funeral we handle is unique,” conveys Patrick Schoen. “We believe we are stewards of this tradition, guiding families to create services that honor their loved one’s wishes while celebrating their lives in a way that reflects our city’s vibrant culture.”

Community involvement is also a cornerstone for Schoen & Son’s Funeral Services. Charitable contributions and volunteer efforts continue reinforcing its dedication to New Orleans, making it a valued community partner.

As he anticipates what lies ahead, Schoen & Son’s Funeral Services President Patrick Schoen emphasizes, “Whatever the future may have in store, one thing is certain: Jacob Schoen & Son is poised to continue offering exceptional funeral service to the citizens of New Orleans for the next century-and-a-half.”

Congratulations to Schoen & Son’s Funeral Services on 150 years!

IN Better Health

with Dr. Claire Melancon

of Audubon Facial Plastic Surgery

ABOUT DR. MELANCON

RACHEL SMART’S JOURNEY to improved health and confidence began at age 10 when a volleyball left her with a deviated septum and a noticeable bump on her nose. The ball’s impact resulted in a nose injury that worsened over time. In the years following, Rachel became self-conscious about her appearance, and her allergies worsened. Despite these issues, Rachel hesitated to pursue surgery. At 23, she finally became open to the idea of surgery and began to look for the right surgeon. Her mother discovered Dr. Melancon and was impressed by her work, prompting Rachel to schedule an appointment with Audubon Facial Plastic Surgery in October 2023. When Rachel entered the office, she knew she was in the right place. Dr. Melancon listened carefully to Rachel’s concerns, explained the options available, and provided photo-morphing to help Rachel envision what her nose could look like post-op. “Dr. Melancon pays such close attention to detail and has given me a new sense of confidence. She listened to my concerns and fears, created the best surgical approach for my nose, and reassured me that I was in good hands,” Rachel recalls.

Rachel’s case required Dr. Melancon to address the deviated septum while addressing her aesthetic concerns. She underwent rhinoplasty, septoplasty, and turbinate reduction, essential to restoring her breathing while simultaneously meeting her cosmetic goals. With all of Rachel’s goals for a natural, balanced, more feminine nose in mind, Dr. Melacon delivered a result tailored uniquely to Rachel, significantly improving her quality of life.

C. Claire Melancon, M.D., is a double board-certified facial plastic surgeon who owns Audubon Facial Plastic Surgery, which focuses only on the face and neck. She received her B.S. in biology from LSU, an M.S. in advanced biology from Tulane, and her M.D. from LSU in New Orleans. She then went on to complete residency in North Carolina at Wake Forest and a fellowship in Houston, TX. Specifically, she is an expert in challenging rhinoplasty, revision cases, and all aesthetic treatments of the face and neck. Before.

Pleased with the outcome, Rachel shares, “I am almost one-year post-op from my surgery, and I can truly say it was the best decision of my life. I finally can breathe better, but most importantly, I feel more confident about myself. Dr. Melancon and her staff are the nicest people and truly feel like family to us.” Rachel credits Dr. Melancon’s “brilliance and confidence in herself and her work, which ultimately led me to the best decision ever. She truly has a gift!”

A Community of Hope

Local Initiatives Raise Cancer Awareness and Support

AS CANCER CONTINUES to impact countless lives, local initiatives are stepping up to raise awareness, provide support, and foster hope within the New Orleans community. From creative fundraising events to personalized patient assistance programs, these organizations make a tangible difference in the fight against cancer. They offer a lifeline to those battling the disease and their families by focusing on education, research, and patient care. Discover how these initiatives are increasing awareness and creating a lasting impact on the lives they touch.

YOU NIGHT

Empowering and Helping Women Beyond the Runway You Night is known for its signature runway show, but the real impact lies in the months of healing and camaraderie that brings women together beforehand.

“They can’t get on that runway stage and put on a fancy dress and lipstick and pretend everything is better. We spend several months prior to that moment working on inner healing and trauma release so that by the time they get to the runway stage, they have formed a tight connection with one another so that it is truly a group accomplishment,” explains You Night creator Lisa McKenzie.

Moved by the impact cancer had on her mother and two close friends, Lisa founded You Night Empowering Events in 2013 with the heartfelt hope of making a

difference for those diagnosed. Though uncertain how to help initially, she was determined to bring joy and light back into the lives of those she cared about. Thus, what began as a compassionate and loving gesture quickly revealed a significant but often neglected need in cancer care: the emotional aspect of healing.

Driven by the desire to bring joy and light into the lives of those affected by cancer, Lisa established a year-round program that provides ongoing support to thousands of women. You Night’s focus on the emotional and psychological needs of women diagnosed with cancer extends far beyond the runway. Many women, facing the challenges of cancer or recurrences find ongoing support crucial. The program fosters lifelong friendships, creating a network of

encouragement during both good and tough times.

While You Night is the event and the sisterhood’s name, its programs are made possible by the “We Lift You Up” fund charity. Donations and ticket sales are the lifeblood of this fund, making the year-round initiative possible. Community support is instrumental in the mission to help women rebuild their lives with confidence and vital connections. Your support is crucial in making a difference in these women’s lives.

You Night 2024 will be held on Saturday, October 5th, at the Castine Center in Mandeville. Guests are invited to arrive at 6 p.m. The runway celebration and participant introductions will begin at 6:30. The Groovy 7 will continue the celebration from 8 to 10 p.m.

New Orleans is all about a celebration of life, and that festive spirit extends beyond just having fun. In 2018, the New Orleans chapter of the American Cancer Society’s Junior Executive Board, alongside local restaurateur John Michael Rowland, introduced a now-iconic event: Shuck Cancer. The name playfully nods to the main attraction— an assortment of oysters from all over the US.

What started in New Orleans has inspired similar young professional events nationwide, all aimed at promoting cancer screening, advancing health equity, and funding patient care programs and research. As cancer rates rise among younger populations, the American Cancer Society increasingly focuses on mobilizing young professionals to join the fight against the disease.

“I love Shuck Cancer because it specifically raises money for LOCAL ACS organizations, and I know I am impacting my local community,” notes Dr. Claire

Melancon, one of this year’s honorees. Shuck Cancer New Orleans alone has raised over $1.4 million, which has gone towards transportation and lodging grants in Louisiana, thanks to the support of sponsors, honorary “shuckers,” and the community. “Not to mention,” says Dr. Melancon, “Shuck Cancer is one of my favorite events every year, with a ton of local vendors, as well as oyster and wine vendors from around the country!”

WIGS BY TIFFANI

A Crowning Joy of Hope for Children Battling Cancer Nhat-thuy “Tiffani” Calix of Wigs by Tiffani has found a way to turn her personal challenges into a mission of hope and joy for children battling cancer. After experiencing postpartum hair loss, Tiffani’s journey led her to the world of wig-making, where she discovered a powerful way to make a difference. What started as a deeply personal battle became a public >>

passion when Tiffani shared her story on social media, inspiring her to launch “Wigs by Tiffani.”

Among her most heartwarming initiatives is her commitment to children suffering from hair loss due to cancer. Tiffani was deeply moved by the thought of young children enduring such a visible and emotional struggle. Driven by empathy, she started a children’s fund, donating custom wigs to five children each month, entirely out of her pocket.

Children like Scarlett Filippov and Madison Ju have shared their heartfelt experiences. Scarlett, who received a wig from Tiffani, expressed, “I felt like I could be like everyone else. I had pretty hair and I could walk around without everyone knowing I had cancer. Once I got better, I went back to school wearing a wig. I would not have wanted to go back without a wig.” Madison, another recipient, noted, “I felt like people didn’t stare at me anymore. I also felt confident because of my hairstyle.”

The joy these children experience upon receiving their wigs is indescribable. For them, these wigs are more than just hair—they’re a source of confidence, normalcy, and happiness during an incredibly challenging time. Through her selfless work, Tiffani restores their hair and brings smiles and hope to their hearts, showing them they are beautiful and strong, inside and out.

KIDS JOIN THE FIGHT

Empowering Young Voices Against Childhood Cancer

Kids Join the Fight is an initiative that harnesses young people’s enthusiasm and energy to combat childhood cancer.

Founded by Walker Beery, a courageous boy who battled Medulloblastoma, a rare and aggressive pediatric brain cancer, its purpose is to engage and inspire children to contribute to the fight against this devastating disease. The organization creates a platform for kids to make a meaningful impact. Through various activities, including fundraising events, awareness campaigns, and educational programs, Kids Join the Fight empowers children to become advocates for their peers battling cancer. By involving them directly in the cause, the organization promotes community and purpose among young participants.

The impact of Kids Join the Fight extends beyond the fundraising efforts. It also aims to educate children about cancer, encourage empathy, and promote the values of teamwork and resilience. With each event and campaign, the organization raises vital funds and builds a generation of informed and compassionate young leaders.

Kids Join The Fight is a beautiful example of the power of kids banding together to carry on the dream of one brave boy whose vision of a world free from pediatric cancer inspires countless others. The next time you see a lemonade stand, bake sale, or young person raising money through their own efforts, take a minute to support them. Kids nationwide are carrying out Walker’s mission to free the world of pediatric cancer. Or join the cause and sponsor your event. “There’s no event too big or too small!”

Kids Join the Fight will host its annual Golf Tournament at Audubon Park on November 3, 2024. See their website for details.

THE AL COPELAND FOUNDATION

Offering Hope and Innovation in the Fight Against Cancer

The Al Copeland Foundation’s motto says it all: “Save Lives. End Cancer.” Since its inception, this simple message has had a monumental and life-altering impact on thousands.

The Foundation was established after Mr. Copeland

was diagnosed with Merkel Cell Carcinoma, a rare form of skin cancer, in November 2007. As he and his family were confronted with the lack of FDA-approved treatments available for his condition, they realized there was a critical gap in cancer care, particularly within Louisiana. This experience led to the Foundation’s creation, focusing on filling that need and the many needs of families facing a cancer diagnosis. Since its founding, the Al Copeland Foundation has partnered with LSU Health Sciences Center to support a comprehensive cancer program for patients in Louisiana and the Gulf States. Through

generous donations, this collaboration has advanced clinical research, trials, cancer prevention, and outreach efforts, while providing critical access to treatment for underprivileged patients.

Today, the foundation offers 76 life-saving treatments for various cancers, including breast, kidney, and bladder cancers and leukemia, at the Stanley S. Scott Cancer Center.

Guided by funding expansion, community partnerships, advocacy, and board engagement, the Al Copeland Foundation continues its mission of saving lives. Its work focuses on providing education, screenings, and groundbreaking clinical trials, all of which aim to end cancer.

Dining with Brad

I TRULY BELIEVE that food is the gateway to bringing people closer together. Whether it is a Sunday supper or a night out with family and friends, a memorable dining experience with those closest to you just makes everything better. This belief rings true at two of the city’s most iconic restaurants, Mosca’s and Arnaud’s.

I decided to round up a crew of my misfit friends for a meal where we could cut up, roast each other, and enjoy good homestyle Italian food. So, naturally, the perfect place for me to bring a group of guys with ferocious appetites is Mosca’s. Mosca’s is an old-school cash-only Italian restaurant located on the Westbank in Westwego. Mosca’s has been a legendary hangout for locals and notorious New Orleanians since 1946. Since its founding, Mosca’s has evolved into a beloved institution that is celebrated not only for its exceptional food, but also for its role in preserving and advancing the culinary heritage of New Orleans.

Mosca’s serves traditional Italian dishes with a hint of Creole influence. Its dishes are meant to be served “family style,” so it is always best to dine at Mosca’s with a group.

Iconic New Orleans Eats

Menu staples include the world-famous oysters Mosca, shrimp Mosca, Chicken a la Grande, Sausage Johnny, and the traditional Spaghetti and Meatballs. After ordering some champagne, wine, and cocktails, we started with Mosca’s traditional crab salad an old-school must, especially for first timers. It is a simple, tasty salad served family-style with iceberg lettuce, giardiniera, plum tomatoes, jumbo lump crabmeat, and vinegar dressing. It was a perfect start to our feast. We then ordered both the Oysters Mosca and the Shrimp Mosca. In my opinion, these are the two best dishes on the menu. Oysters Mosca, in case you have been living under a rock, is a dish composed of baked oysters with a savory mixture of Parmesan cheese, herbs, and breadcrumbs. It’s an iconic and delectable dish that is popular not only at Mosca’s but in homes across the area during holidays and family get-togethers. Shrimp Mosca features a dozen headless juicy shrimp sauteed in Italian seasonings and white wine. Trust me, this dish was made for bread to be soaked and saturated in its sauce and then annihilated. Next came thirteen – yes – thirteen tantalizing meatballs. You won’t find better meatballs west of the Atlantic. The size of tennis balls, Mosca’s meatballs are as savory and old school as they come. Served in Mosca’s rich red gravy, Mosca’s homemade meatballs will melt in your mouth after each mouth-watering bite. We devoured the meatballs in no time and were astonished by the table of diners sitting next to us. Even our waitress was both impressed and disturbed by our feat. Not to be outdone, like the gluttons we were that night, we ordered several portions of Mosca’s Chicken a’la Grande. This dish is as homey and traditional as it comes. It features chicken pieces sauteed with rosemary and Italian seasonings, whole cloves of garlic, and white wine. It is both simple and perfect. Our experience at Mosca’s could not have been better. It was just as it was meant to be - a lively and fun night out at a classic spot on a sleepy stretch of Highway 90 in

Above: Oysters Mosca. Right: Mosca’s Meatballs.

Westwego. One of my friends flew in from Houston just for the experience. Laughter, fun with friends and total strangers, and good food are such a recipe for success during a dining experience. As I walked out the door of Mosca’s after our meal, I recalled the famous words uttered by Julius Caesar after his victory in the Battle of Zela. Caesar famously said, “Veni, vidi, vici.” I came, I saw, I conquered. No truer words have ever been spoken following a memorable experience at Mosca’s. Go seek your conquest soon. Tell Lisa Mosca I sent you.

Our final stop took us to one of New Orleans’ classic restaurants, Arnaud’s. Located in the heart of the French Quarter at 813 Bienville Street, Arnaud’s has been serving up classic New Orleans dishes since 1918. With its elegant ambiance, timeless dishes, and storied past, Arnaud’s has rightfully earned its place as one of New Orleans’ most iconic dining establishments. This time, I connected with one of my very best friends to catch up and enjoy what proved to be a classic New Orleans culinary journey. We were seated in the main dining room at a fantastic corner table that allowed us to people-watch and take in the majestic dining room the entire evening.

Arnaud’s menu includes several signature dishes. Oysters Bienville is a classic dish featuring baked oysters in a creamy mixture of shrimp, mushrooms, and cheese. The Souffle’ Potatoes features the savory “potato puffs” served with a side of Sauce Bearnaise for dunking. This dish was originally created by King Louis-Phillipe’s personal chef when he unintentionally dropped already fried potatoes into scalding hot oil to reheat them for the King. Shrimp Arnaud is another classic dish served with jumbo Gulf Shrimp marinated in Arnaud’s signature Creole Remoulade sauce and served over a bed of chilled shredded lettuce.

Our meal kicked off with Arnaud’s famous cocktail, the French 75. This classic refreshing cocktail featuring gin, lemon juice, simple syrup and champagne was the perfect start to our experience. We then feasted like King LouisPhillipe on the Potatoes Souffle’ and added the Shrimp Arnaud for good measure. For our entrée, we ordered the Pompano Duarte, featuring a sauteed pompano filet topped with Gulf shrimp and tomatoes and lightly seasoned with garlic, fresh herbs, and crushed chili peppers. My friend ordered the Redfish Pontchartrain, which was sauteed and topped with the ambrosia of the gods - fresh Louisiana jumbo lump crabmeat. Both dishes were incredible and reminded us that we hit the lottery by living in this city of amazing culinary choices. Throughout our meal, I made sure to take in the experience and found myself imagining what it must have been like for my grandparents and even great-grandparents, to have dined in this very room back in the early twentieth century. This classic New Orleans experience must start at Arnaud’s, if you want to truly experience what it was like so long ago. The recipes have changed very little at Arnaud’s

and thank God for that.

The highlight of the meal came at dessert. If you go to Arnaud’s and you don’t order the Bananas Foster, can you really say you truly experienced Arnaud’s? A trip to Arnaud’s is not complete if you do not experience the tableside preparation of one of New Orleans’ most recognizable desserts. For you rookies out there, Bananas Foster features bananas sauteed in butter with cinnamon and brown sugar, flamed rum, and served with French vanilla ice cream. The table-side preparation is an experience that is sure to have other diners’ attention. Once that was concluded, and we had indulged in our tasty dessert, we were treated to yet another table-side spectacle – the

preparation of the famous Café Brulot. This coffee-based drink is served with lemon and orange rinds, cloves, cinnamon sticks and Orange Curacao served with flamed brandy. The preparation is a site to behold and is sure to impress. I once brought clients from out of town to Arnaud’s and ordered the Café Brulot following our meal. Several years later, they still mention the wonderment of its preparation and the experience. To say we ate like kings this night at Arnaud’s is an understatement.

Walking into Arnaud’s is like stepping back in time. The ambiance at Arnaud’s is designed to complement the dining experience, providing a refined setting that enhances the enjoyment of the food. The menu is a testament to the rich culinary traditions of New Orleans, offering a diverse array of dishes that cater to both traditional and contemporary tastes. Whether you dine in its traditional dining room, enjoy a cocktail at its famous French 75 Bar, or indulge in Sunday Brunch inside its Jazz Bistro, Arnaud’s has something for everyone with a pallet for classic New Orleans food.

A FEW ALTERNATIVES

All these cocktails are great because if you are on Keto or sugarfree, you can use sugar-free syrups to make any of them. Monin Syrups has some great sugar-free options too. The Monin products are high quality and have a great, intense flavor. If you want to make your own, Stevia will be your best friend. I enjoyed making all my syrups using Stevia and Sugar. Making syrups is easy, and you will have enough to drink.

PUMPKIN SYRUP

1 cup water

1 cup demerara sugar or stevia

1 cup pumpkin puree

Place the water in a saucepan, bring to a boil, add sugar until it has dissolved, stir in pumpkin puree, and cook for 1 minute, stirring the whole time. Remove from heat and let it cool completely. Strain the syrup before using or storing it in the fridge. See, super easy.

OTHER ALTERNATIVES

Dairy: Use what works for you.

Diet Ginger Beer: I made the Apple Cider Mule with diet ginger beer, and it tasted delicious.

Cold Brew Coffee: It will work for espresso, but remember it is different.

El Guapo Bitters: Available at a ton of local groceries, liquor stores, and Total Wine. It’s an amazing local product.

Your weekly trip to Home Goods will have a lot of syrups and products that you need. My trip to Home Goods was what inspired me to make a lot of these cocktails. Remember to have fun with it, and if you want to add Salted Caramel syrup to the espresso martini, do it. I did, and it was so yummy.

A Refreshing Non-Alcoholic Take on Drinks

SOBER BARS and nonalcoholic bottle shops like DryOak in Covington are becoming increasingly popular as more people focus on health and wellness. With a growing trend toward reducing alcohol consumption, DryOak provides a range of delicious alternatives for those looking to embrace a mindful lifestyle. As Louisiana’s first non-alcoholic bottle shop, it has quickly become a destination for flavorful, alcohol-free options.

Owners Taylor and Cayla Ohler had a clear vision for DryOak, refusing to compromise on key aspects of the shop. Their top priority was ensuring that the products they carried tasted great. They also knew the success of DryOak depended on a wide selection, so they built an extensive inventory. The third piece of

their vision was creating an inviting, warm atmosphere for customers.

DryOak offers a large selection of non-alcoholic drinks, including multiple beer brands, with Taylor’s favorites being Bravus and Uncool. He assures customers that their non-alcoholic beers taste and smell just like regular beers despite the removal of the alcohol. The same attention to taste applies to their wines and champagnes. Cayla explained that making great-tasting NA wine is tricky, so they are selective about their offerings, only carrying the most flavorful options.

From non-alcoholic whiskey with a satisfying burn to functional beverages with health benefits, DryOak has something for everyone. After trying Hiyo’s watermelon lime seltzer and the Smashd NA Lychee Martini, I was impressed by both the taste and quality.

Whether you’re fully committed to a non-alcoholic lifestyle or just curious, DryOak is definitely worth a visit. Taylor and Cayla’s expertise ensures they can help you find the perfect alcohol-free drink.
