dorris FAMILY By Greta Honsberger

T

he Dorris family established their residence in The Sanctuary six years ago, but their choice of residing on Cardinal Lane came about quite by happenstance. At the time, the family of five was in the process of constructing a home on Oleander Court. However, as they left the neighborhood on their way to the beach, they stumbled upon the opportunity and knew they had to take it: the corner lot on Cardinal Lane was up for sale. Without hesitation, they secured the lot immediately. Blythe recalls, “We made the call and were under contract by the time we reached the beach. Michael and I always had a sense that Oleander wasn’t our forever home, but we never anticipated making the move so swiftly.” In no time, their future residence was expertly designed by Rusty Meyer of Pinnacle Home Designs, and at the hands of builder HJ Crosby Construction, their dream home on Cardinal Lane became a reality. Later, additions were added, including a wine room off their kitchen, crafted by ALR Carpentry, and a pool and patio by Aquarius Pools. Blythe and Michael Dorris first crossed paths during their college years. Michael, a University of Southern Mississippi student, journeyed to Oxford to visit his sister, who was attending Ole Miss. During that fateful visit, he encountered a freshman named Blythe, who happened to reside across the hall from Michael’s sister and was Blythe’s close friend. Thus, Michael and Blythe became friends as well. However, it would take two and a half years before their romantic journey began. After being happily married for fourteen years, the couple has three wonderful children and successfully operates a business together. Although Mandeville has been Michael’s home for thirty-five years, 10 | The Sanctuary Living

Blythe has only lived in Mandeville since 2006. Growing up, Blythe’s family moved every two years, but she considers Little Rock home. The couple started a disaster recovery management firm in 2017. Blythe serves as the president of Del Sol Consulting, Inc., and Micheal is the vice president. Their business aims to help local municipalities rebuild after a natural disaster, making their clients all over the United States. Between their work schedules and the involvement of their three children in extracurriculars, Blythe says that the best word to describe their family is “circus.” She breaks that down further by explaining, “We are always running around like we are on fire.” Indeed, that is busy. Maddie, Kenzie, and Trace are the three children who keep things busy and circus-like. Maddie, 18, is a Mandeville High School senior dedicated to soccer. She plays club ball for Madisonville United and has participated in varsity soccer at MHS all four years of high school. Kenzie is the social butterfly. She also attends Mandeville High, where she is the Freshman class president. Trace, 13, attends Mandeville Junior High and plays club ball at Mandeville Soccer Club and the MJH soccer team. This summer, Trace and his MSC team won the USYS Southern Regional Champions title and advanced to the USYS National Championship in Orlando. The three Dorris children play a crucial role in shaping the lively circus that characterizes life in their household. Pups Rex and Nola are also important to the Dorris family and undoubtedly add to the circus. Rex is a Shih Tzu who thinks he is a November - December 2023

cat. Blythe says Rex is trouble, but when I visited, all I saw was an adorable love muffin, although he did have a mischievous look in his eye! Nola is a beautiful white Lab with that perfect square head that screams perfect Lab. She thinks she is a tiny human. Together, Rex and Nola are a real force who let their presence be known by appropriately (or inappropriately) barking at all who pass by their side gate. Rex and Nola excel in enhancing the lively circus atmosphere. During those precious moments when the Dorrises find themselves with rare downtime, unburdened by the rush to various activities, their favorite gathering spot is the kitchen. This bright and spacious room exudes a warm and inviting quality, featuring a generously proportioned island and an abundance of barstools to accommodate all. Blythe adds, “This is where our family always gathers. When the kids have friends over, everyone is always in the kitchen eating, laughing, and socializing.” The open kitchen connects with the adjoining living space, offering equal comfort, ample seating, a grand fireplace, and a stunning wooden mantle that is a gorgeous focal point. Other decor features in their home consist of several pieces from Eros Home in Madisonville and some important family treasures. Their dining room table is one of those treasures. This beautiful piece belonged to Michael’s grandmother. It is a lovely, extendable double pedestal table with a rich wood grain finish. Blythe cleverly mixed the traditional dining table with the more modern by adding off-white shabby chic dining chairs. The sideboard and other decor in the dining room are also more modern, but they complement each November - December 2023

other beautifully and are stunning with the dining table. Another particular item in the Dorris home is the piano in their study. This piano is significant for good reason. When she was twelve, Blythe was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and went to St. Jude Children’s Hospital for treatment. As a patient of St. Jude Hospital, she was given a Make-A-Wish wish and chose the piano. She completed her treatment at fifteen but will always hold a special place for St. Jude and the piano she received during a challenging time in her young life. Incidentally, Blythe and Michael want their children to understand how fortunate they are and, on multiple occasions, have taken them to St. Jude to give out goodies and interact with the sick children. Their time spent all together is precious and rare. They prioritize taking time to vacation together and have a family condo in Orange Beach, Alabama, and a house in Port Aransas, Texas. Mardi Gras vacations are spent on the slopes in Breckenridge. The Dorrises hold a particular fondness for breaks, which are fun opportunities to make up for the time they are rushing around going in so many different directions. Blythe, Michael, and their children, Maddie, Kenzie, and Trace, enjoy their life within The Sanctuary for a number of reasons. The proximity to school is a notable advantage for the girls, with Maddie highlighting her love for the nearby soccer goals. As a dedicated soccer player, having quick and easy access to field space and soccer goals right within the neighborhood is a welcome convenience. However, what truly resonates with all the members of the Dorris family is the overall convenience of their Sanctuary residence. Whether they’re embarking on a shopping trip, dining out, or simply commuting to school, the location of their home plays a vital role in their daily lives. Speaking of convenience, the Dorrises like to go for a late dinner at La Carretas after a soccer practice or game. The convenient later hours that La Carretas offers work well for the Dorrises and their schedule, not to mention it is right around the corner from home. For a more formal dinner, Papillons and 527 are favorites of all the Dorris family for a family date night. It is nice that when they get some time, the whole family takes the time for a special night at a great restaurant. In the whirlwind of their busy lives, the Dorris family has discovered the art of finding joy in the chaos, transforming their daily routines into a captivating circus of love and laughter. Though their schedules are packed, they prioritize moments together, enjoying the energetic atmosphere they’ve created as home. Their ability to appreciate what Blythe lovingly calls a circus is a testament to their strong bonds and happiness within the happy but lively chaos that is home. The Sanctuary Living | 11

NORTHLAKE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL

Business Spotlight

The Genesis of Northlake Christian School began In the late 70s when would-be founders Fritz Klumpp and Stuart McClendon shared the dream of starting a non-denominational Christian school in the Northshore community. The more they met and prayed with other like-minded Christians whose desire was the same, the more the dream began to take shape. After putting together a motivated committee, including Ron Hunter, Fritz Klumpp, Stuart McClendon, Steve Jahncke, and Jim Saucier, Northlake Christian School came to fruition in 1978 with its first class. Although forming the new school had come together somewhat flawlessly, procuring a building for the school was more of a challenge. Initially, the plan was to secure a church to rent for their facility, but that was not to be. Interestingly, the first school facility was an old veterinarian hospital belonging to Pete Hendry. After building a new veterinarian hospital, Dr. Hendry offered his existing facility, with a house, a garage, and a garage apartment, to Northlake Christian School as its first school campus. Over the past forty-five years, the Northlake Christian School campus has undergone several transformations. Gone are the days of makeshift classrooms, replaced by a modern learning environment. A significant milestone for NCS was the recent completion of a state-of-the-art secondary school building spanning 35,000 square feet. This impressive structure houses twenty-two classrooms, including state-of-the-art chemistry and biology labs. The new secondary building also has a spacious common area that fosters collaborative learning and community. Additionally, the school has invested in extensive renovations for its athletic facilities, completing them in time for the 2023-2024 school year. The newly renovated turf football and track fields feature advanced GeoSurface technology to enhance the athletic experience for students and the broader school community. Today, Northlake Christian School is thriving with the Early Learning Center, which begins at six weeks old and goes to age three; the elementary school, which encompasses pre-kindergarten four and goes to the sixth grade; and the secondary school, which continues with seventh grade through high school graduation. NCS is the only private, non-denominational coed school that educates children from six weeks old through twelfth grade on the Northshore. November - December 2023

Northlake Christian School offers a variety of Distinctive Academic Programming (DAP) options for students with individual education needs beyond the scope of the traditional classroom setting. These services are primarily through their DISCOVERY CENTER and are specifically designed to help students succeed in all areas of academics. These programs range from Gifted to Content Tutoring to Intensive Individualized Core Courses. Each distinctive academic program requires a consultation and a team approach to ensure the appropriate and successful program accommodation to meet the individual student’s needs. The great mission of Northlake Christian School is to collaborate closely with families, guiding students in exploring the world around them from a Biblical standpoint. This means encouraging students to perceive science, the arts, language, history, and other facets of life through scripture. Whether within the classroom, in the science lab, or on the sports field, the NCS

faculty are dedicated to guiding students beyond knowledge. Rather, are called to nurture their students to seek wisdom. At Northlake Christian School, students are challenged to “Think Critically, Lead Courageously, and Serve Faithfully.” The faculty and staff of Northlake Christian extend an invitation to families who share their mission-minded perspective and welcome the opportunity to collaborate as they instill these values in their children.

TIPS FOR SELF-CARE AND RELAXATION BY SANCTUARY RESIDENT

Tori Pasentine with Royal Retreat Day Spa

As we enter the bustling holiday season, it’s common for us to become caught up in the rush and stress of making everything perfect for our loved ones. Amidst these efforts, we sometimes overlook the importance of taking a moment to unwind and truly savor the season. Here are some valuable tips to help you embrace a slower pace, find relaxation, and fully relish this holiday season. MEDITATE - Choose a place of quietness and isolation and spend some time just being. Listening to sounds of nature or meditation music is another great way to meditate and unwind. I recommend the soundscapes of Michael D. Tidwell. YOGA - Try a yoga class to open up blocked chakras, clear your mind, and connect with your body while improving balance and strength. EXERCISE - To boost your mood and energy level, try exercising. Exercising can also improve your appearance. When you look great, you’ll feel great. MASSAGE - Is a great way to promote relaxation, reduce stress and anxiety, relieve body tension, and lower blood pressure. FACIALS - Choose a facial targeting your skin’s needs, giving yourself clean, smooth, glowing skin to boost confidence. Feeling confident decreases stress, increases happiness and gives a sense of well being. BREATHING EXERCISES - This important exercise can reduce stress, increase immune functioning, and lower blood pressure and heart rate. SLEEP - It is important to sleep a full 8 hours a night and try to squeeze in a nap. Your body heals and recharges every time you sleep, which helps you manage stress. READ- Try relaxing with a book or opt for an audiobook and simply listen. Reading gives your mind a hiatus from your everyday thoughts and worries and allows your imagination to take you on a mental journey. POSITIVE SELF- TALK- Be kind to yourself by recognizing your value. Tell yourself you’re doing a good job. Be proud of your accomplishments, no matter how big or small. Consider implementing one or more of the tips mentioned when you feel overwhelmed by the frantic holiday season. Setting aside some self-care moments can be the difference between having a good holiday season and an exceptional one for you and those you love.

FALL GARDENING TIPS BY SANCTUARY RESIDENT

Jason with Grass Inc

The Fall Advantage for Gardening Success

Guarding Your Property From Hungry Deer

We are fully in the throes of fall. Many folks would be surprised to learn that fall is actually prime planting season. Most people think spring is the best time for getting plants in the ground, but fall is your best bet for success. Here are a few reasons why.

The Sanctuary residents share their outdoor living space with quite a bit of wildlife, making the environment more appealing. Unfortunately, what is not appealing is losing your lush landscape to deer. Potentially, residents can lose thousands of dollars worth of landscape to deer annually. Although this is a significant problem, it doesn’t have to be. Consider installing a deer motion sprinkler. It works well in keeping the deer out of your gardens and is humane to the deer. When strategically placed in your garden, these handy deterrents effectively deter the deer from helping themselves to your landscape. Installed on your main water line, its infrared motion sensor activates when it senses movement and sprays a burst of water to deter the deer. You can get pest motion sensors at different price points in several places, but I prefer the Orbit brand Yard Enforcer from Ace Hardware in Mandeville. This particular one works very well. Install motion-activated sprinklers to enjoy a deer-free garden and save your landscape and money.

•Autumn provides an excellent opportunity for fostering root growth in your garden. •The harmonious blend of comfortably warm soils and milder weather creates the perfect environment for newly introduced trees, shrubs, and perennials. •During this season, the soil maintains a welcoming temperature, promoting vigorous root development, contrasting to spring when the soil is still recovering from the chill. •The shorter daylight hours and cooler air temperatures divert the plant’s energy from foliage and flowers towards nurturing a robust root system, preparing for the upcoming winter.

Planting in the fall will ensure that your landscape plants enter the next spring season equipped with a resilient root structure poised to fuel vibrant new growth as soon as temperatures rise.

FAMILY pet

Lily Anna Authement

Lily Anna is the newest furry and adorable addition to the Authement family. For the Authements, the first glimpse of Lily came about one Sunday afternoon while the family was strolling on the lakefront. There, a golden doodle breeder had a litter of puppies for sale. As it often happens in these situations, it took no time for the Authements to fall in love with this adorable three-month-old little girl. Having had a golden doodle in the past, they knew they were intelligent and had a super sweet personality,

which was the perfect combination for their next pup. With fluffy, golden-reddish fur, Lily Anna has a black nose and brown eyes. She is one adorable baby girl with whom the whole family has become smitten. Daughter Izzy loves spending time with Lily and shares some of the puppy’s antics. “Lily is funny because she chases me around the yard and then falls asleep in my bed behind the pillows.” Just like the puppy she truly is, Lily is all legs and arms, running and jumping one hundred miles an hour until she’s not, and then she is fast asleep in no time. 20 | The Sanctuary Living

Lily Anna’s personality is every bit that of a golden doodle in that she is calm and sweet but, as a puppy, can get wound up for some serious play. Izzy adds, “She loves everyone she meets and is a great listener.” Additionally, Lily Anna likes to simply take in the action of the Authement household as a bystander and is a fan of TV viewing. I wonder what her favorite show is. Ever the good girl, Lily Anna goes into her kennel without being prompted. She likes to go in the kennel, play with her toys, and have her ‘me’ time. She appreciates her little private space and toys, especially when bored with the family. It sounds like Miss Lily Anna hit the jackpot when the Authements spied her on the lakefront. Likewise, the Authements hit the jackpot when Lily Anna became a member of their family. This precious little furry girl will undoubtedly continue to enrich their lives for many years. entertaining tips by Sanctuary resident

Angelina Valuri with Snacx

Even though the most wonderful and joyous time of year is almost here, there is undoubtedly a lot to juggle as we get closer to Thanksgiving and Christmas. The holiday season can get extremely stressful very quickly. In fact, the holidays can be a little intimidating – even for those of us who entertain on a regular basis. Holiday entertaining can be viewed as a double-edged sword so to speak – fun, yet challenging! Family dinners, parties with friends, gift exchanges, potluck meals – there always seems to be something on the calendar. It can be a lot of additional work on top of everything else you have going on - especially if you’re hosting. Luckily, SNACX Entertaining Tips is here to help. Ward off holiday party chaos with these expert hacks for keeping your event and planning clean, calm, and collected, so you can not only enjoy your guests, but also a cocktail or two, or three…. •SEND INVITES EARLY – The seasonal calendars of your friends and family will undoubtedly fill up fast – especially the few precious Saturday nights in December. Inviting guests in advance ensures that the guests you really want to attend your event are available. Although not as formal, online invitations are always faster and cheaper than sending them by mail. Afterward, make sure to follow-up with your invited guests with a friendly text, email, or phone call if you do not receive an RSVP. You would be surprised at how many people appreciate the reminder. •HIRE A CLEANER FOR THE DAY BEFORE – Build this into your party budget and you won’t have a single regret! There’s nothing like walking into a freshly cleaned house (that YOU didn’t clean) and instantly knowing your house is clean and ready. Hire a cleaner to come the day before so it’s really just minor maintenance for 24 hours before guests arrive. •ALWAYS OVERESTIMATE WHEN BUYING FOOD AND BEVERAGES – The last thing you want to worry about is

running out of food and beverages while entertaining. Trust me on this! Have leftovers? It’s always a nice touch to be able to send your guests home with some food and edible goodies. •HAVE PLENTY OF TRASH CANS – This tip is pretty much self-explanatory – BUT - I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been to an event where the trash bins are scarce and over flowing. Subsequently, without proper trash receptables, people stop making an effort to throw their finished items away in an appropriate location. •STICK TO A TIMELINE – Any party will always run smoother if you incorporate some sort of plan for the evening. From the time that guests will arrive to when dessert is served – at the very least, loosely sticking to a schedule will make your gathering appear seamless. •DON’T FORGET THE MUSIC – Having melodies in the back ground always enhances your event and puts everyone in a festive mood. Apps like Spotify or Pandora can easily be used to create an appropriate playlist. No DJ necessary!

DR. TODD BRASUELL, DDS

Business Spotlight

Dr. Brasuell knew he wanted to be a pediatric dentist when, as a teen, he began working in the office of his childhood dentist. “From the very first day I began working there, I knew that this profession was for me.” Thus, when he began college, he worked toward that dream and was accepted into LSU Dental School in 2000. Six years later, his pediatric dental training was complete. After eighteen years as a pediatric dentist, Dr. Brasuell appreciates that his profession allows him to treat children’s dental needs while cultivating a connection with families. Acknowledging that going to the dentist can be daunting to many, at the office of Dr. Todd Brasuell, the primary objective is to create a relaxed atmosphere for every child. To achieve this, his staff has meticulously designed a kid-friendly environment that greets everyone who walks through their doors. This kid-friendly environment includes engaging touchscreen games in the waiting area and six TVs throughout the office streaming movies. Additionally, Dr. Brasuell uses electric high-speed handpieces that are much quieter than most people are used to from the traditional high-pitched drill. These little features go a long way in creating a more relaxing environment for patients. What Dr. Brasuell calls “unreasonable hospitality” is delivered from start to finish, ensuring that each patient’s experience is as positive and stress-free as possible. The dental experience can mean fear for some children, so Dr. Brasuell and his team excel in addressing dental anxiety. They take great pride in ensuring that any anxiety or fear is openly discussed with the parent or the child, depending on their age. Dr. Brasuell elaborates on this important aspect of pediatric dentistry, “We take extra time to help ease any fear or anxiety our patients might have and have numerous treatment options to help deliver high-quality dental care in a comfortable environment.” By addressing this delicate matter, Dr. Brasuell and his staff ensure a positive outcome for all their patients. Ultimately, this enjoyable and calming atmosphere creates a positive and effective dental experience for young patients and their parents. The range of dental services for children encompasses preventive measures like cleanings, x-rays, and sealants, as well as restorative procedures involving fillings, white zirconia crowns, and space maintenance. Further ensuring a comfortable experience, patients are offered various sedation options, including nitrous oxide, oral sedation, IV sedation, or general anesthesia, available at St. Tammany Hospital, where Dr. Brasuell is a staff member. Dr. Brasuell and his dedicated team prioritize delivering dental procedures as painlessly as possible, putting patient comfort at the forefront of their practice. Dr. Todd S. Brasuell is an experienced and dedicated pediatric dentist and a compassionate professional who understands the importance of trust and comfort in delivering quality dental care to children. With over eighteen years of expertise, his commitment to creating a welcoming and stress-free environment for young patients and their families is evident. Dr. Brasuell’s focus on personalized care and his team’s exceptional skills ensure that each child’s dental experience is positive, nurturing, and tailored to their unique needs. With his “unreasonable hospitality” approach and a genuine passion for pediatric dentistry, Dr. Brasuell remains a trusted partner in the journey to healthier smiles for countless families. 24 | The Sanctuary Living

DESIGN and Heath cooking TIPSL&H BY sanctuary resident Brandi with Custom Homes and Design and One Pot Momma This is the best of the year time to let your family and closest friends know how much they mean to you. One way is by hosting a holiday get-together. Whether hosting an intimate dinner or a large gathering, there are a few easy touches you can do to make it an enjoyable occasion for everyone and give it that added holiday feel. • In serving food for your special occasion, plan 2-3 appetizers, several meat choices, rolls, 1-2 side dishes, and a dessert. Holiday drinks are always a great touch to any dinner party! • A fun collection of holiday platters from different places is a unique and fun way to serve your party fare. A nice cutting board is always useful for serving appetizers and dips. Add to the cutting board display by lining or stacking crackers or breads to form a decorative border. • To present that festive aesthetic, use different colors and designs of cellophane wrap to cover your countertops. The cellophane lets you identify each dish for your guests using a metallic Sharpie and makes for a clean-up that is quick and easy! • Another decorative trick is using inexpensive holiday stemware to spruce up your spread and give it that extra holiday warmth. Using leaves, pumpkins, or pine cones for Thanksgiving and Holly berries, ornaments, and mistletoe for Christmas, along with the stemware, is the perfect way to further dress up your dining table.

HOLIDAY PET TIPS BY sanctuary RESIDENT

Dr. G. with Vet Naturally

Pet-Proofing Your Home for the Holidays: A Focus on Christmas Plant Safety

The Christmas season means colors and tradition; to many, that means the iconic plants of the season. However, a few traditional holiday plants need to be monitored if you have pets in your home. And if you have pets prone to eating things they shouldn’t, you may want to skip buying these plants altogether! Although they are beautiful, Poinsettias, Amaryllis (Christmas Lily), Mistletoe, and Hollies all contain dangerous toxins to cats and dogs. The following is a breakdown of each and the dangers they can bring to your pet. POINSETTIAS The iconic red “petals” are mildly toxic leaves to cats and dogs. They may cause drooling, GI upset, and mouth irritation. AMARYLLIS The bulbs of these flowers contain the highest amount of toxins, but all parts of the plant are considered toxic. They can cause vomiting, rapid changes in blood pressure, and even seizures.

MISTLETOE This traditional greenery contains several toxins, including lectins and pharatoxins. Consumption of any part of the plant may cause GI upset, a decrease in blood pressure, cardiac issues, seizures, or even death. HOLLY The beautiful red berries that make Holly so pretty are toxic to dogs, cats, and humans. Ingesting them can cause severe vomiting and diarrhea. Consuming the spiky leaves can cause GI injury.

Keep in mind that the factors determining the severity of poisoning vary by plant, plant part ingested, and your pet’s weight. If you suspect your pet has ingested any of these toxic plants, gather any chewed or regurgitated parts and bring them to your vet immediately. Call the ASPCA poison control center at 888-426-4435 if your vet is unavailable. This 24-hour hotline will guide you in what to do next with your pet. (The ASPCA poison control hotline may charge a fee for use.) Remember to consider your pets when filling your home with Christmas cheer because what might be beautiful and festive to us may not be suitable for our pets.

JUST FOR TEENS

Mary Stone

By all measures, Mary Elizabeth Stone is a brave and adventurous young woman who is earnest in charting her own path, regardless of how far from home she may be. During her junior year at Hannan High School, Mary began touring Arizona schools while visiting her grandparents, who live in Goodyear, AZ. She toured a few schools in the area and liked them, but when she arrived at Arizona State University in Tempe, she explained, “The second I stepped onto campus, I felt overwhelmingly happy. I loved being in a big city, on a big campus, with so many people around me.” She decided then that ASU-Tempe would be where she would spend her four years of college. Since Mary and her family had moved every two years due to her dad’s job, moving was not a big deal, but leaving her family was challenging; however, she has transitioned smoothly from Mandeville to ASU college life. Arizona State is in the heart of downtown Tempe on 600 acres, surrounded by an arboretum. One of the things that Mary likes about her new home is the many beautiful pedestrian walkways like the Palm Walk, which is her favorite. Walkways aside, Mary has taken to college life in Tempe. One thing that has surprised her is just how busy she is. Her days are filled with attending classes, studying, and a new job as a pilates instructor. She is equally as active with her sorority and explains, “We support the Make-A-Wish foundation in Arizona. We raised over 50k at our annual Gala just last week!” Another organization that means a lot to Mary is called Kesem. This vital non-profit provides support to children whose parents have cancer. Adding to her bustling schedule, she is part of a Bible study club on campus and a line dancing club. About the line dancing, she says, “[It] is a great way to incorporate some country back into my life being on the West Coast.” Mary is enjoying all her classes, but her favorite is psychology, which she has also chosen as her major. 28 | The Sanctuary Living

She likes her psychology class because she appreciates her professor and finds her lectures engaging, making her major even more appealing. Mary has always been fascinated with the brain, and taking classes that deep dive into the science of the brain is exciting to her. Time management has become a key component in Mary’s first few weeks of college. She seems to be doing pretty well figuring it out for herself. “I put aside at least two days devoted to studying and homework. I get most of my work done on the weekends, mostly on Sundays. I usually go to the library and get a few hours of assignments done for the week. I am a great procrastinator, so having a lot of self-discipline in college has helped.” One big drawback to being so far from home is that she misses her family, especially her little sister Savannah, and her dogs. Through Facetime, Mary manages to stay in touch with her family and best friend, Emma. Recently, the Stones visited for Parent’s Weekend. It was fun and exciting to share with her family the life she has made for herself at ASU. I asked if Mary had any advice to offer a high school senior who might be considering a college move across the country as she did. Without hesitation, she said, “Go with your gut! I went with my gut and know everything happens for a reason.” For Mary Stone, there are no regrets. She loves being an Arizona State Sun Devil and is thrilled to call it home for the next four years.

CUSTOM BathroomS

Feature Crafted by Eli Crosby Homes, this brand-new bathroom boasts an MTI tub, complemented by Taj Mahal Quartzite countertops, giving the vanity a look of opulence and sophistication. Custom cabinetry for the vanity completes the picture of a tailored and functional area. Every design element is meticulously crafted.

A recent renovation by Eli Crosby Homes, this custom bath boasts a luxurious MTI tub that takes center stage. The quartz deck adds a touch of refinement. Sleek and protective Shower Guard glass enclosures encompass the shower. Adding to the elegance are elongated hexagon porcelain tiles that match the backdrop wall of the tub.

This renovated primary bathroom went from the dark 80s drab to light, airy oasis with all-new finishes in brighter, more reflective colors and contemporary champagne bronze fixtures, in this case by Brizo. The small shower needed to be expanded and was enhanced by adding a glass panel, allowing daylight to stream in. An abstract floral wallpaper by WallQuest and fun pendant light fixtures by Circa Lighting give the space a touch of tasteful glam. Other areas were brightened and lightened with natural stone, mosaic tile, and porcelain tile in the shower enclosure. The lovely chandelier provides visual solace. The whole look feels refreshing and pulled together with sinks by Kohler, a vanity stool by Ballard Designs, and cabinetry by WoodMode. Photo Credit: Jacqueline Marque

This spectacular two-story bath and closet combination is connected by a floating staircase from the lower to the upper floor. It begins in one of the suites with the large two-story bathroom, replete with an eight-foot tub and a massive shower. The ornate bathroom includes Sherle Wagner 24-karat gold-plated faucets and hand-painted sinks. Here, the spiral staircase emanates, heading upward to the second floor of the closet.
