LETTER FROM THE

I think it is safe to say, “Happy Fall, Yall,” now that we are in September. I welcome this change in temperature and general life rhythm and hope that the temperature plunge gets here sooner than later. This issue was a lot of fun for me because I enjoyed writing about my friends the Authements and learning more about their house and their dedicated involvement in Hogs for a Cause. Also, I loved hearing about how Charlotte Boswell came to create Safewater, a Northshore staple in many neighborhood pools. Finally, getting to hang out with those adorable Donahoes one afternoon made my entire week! So…here’s to another great issue. Enjoy!

Creativity, confidence, and connection are three words that Culinary Kids owner and director Sherri Hansen continually uses to describe her business. As Sherri explains, “Our mission is to inspire creativity and connection in the kitchen with professional instructors in a supportive setting”. The Culinary Kids’ focus is to bring people together as they create memories that will span for generations. While many of the programs at Culinary Kids are aimed at teaching the art and science of cooking to kids, there are programs for aspiring chefs of all ages! Field trips, birthday parties, cooking classes, and summer camps, just to name a few, might be for the younger chefs, but adults can get in on the fun with corporate teambuilding events and other cooking get-togethers. The ‘Corks & Cooking’ class is geared for some real grown-up fun, and if you are looking for something more specific, a personalized party is always a hit. Since its opening in 2012, Culinary Kids has not slowed down in its growth and success. Beginning as a business serving 2,000 kids and families annually, they now have a customer base of over 18,000 per year. Originally, the kitchen was located in a strip mall for its first four years, but has since moved into a larger space with a yard to accommodate a playset, a garden, a resident pig named Truffle, and even house chickens that provide the kitchen with eggs!

The programs at Culinary Kids are loved across the Northshore and beyond, winning accolades for Best Kid’s Birthday Parties, Best Summer Camps, and Best Cooking Classes in local magazines through the years. Additionally, the success of the young chefs themselves should not be overlooked. Two Culinary Kids students have gone on to win on the national television show “Chopped Junior,” and three students have been to “Top Chef Junior Boot Camp!” While the success of the students in the kitchen is valued, what Sherri and her staff at Culinary Kids appreciate most is the opportunity to connect with the community. “Many of our students eventually become staff and learn even more from us in their first jobs,” Sherri excitedly explains. She attributes their success to her staff and focuses on employing a loyal staff who believe in the purpose of Culinary Kids. Most importantly, the staff must love being on the front line to create memories for their families. Additionally, the staff is always looking for opportunities to teach practical life skills for their students to bring home to their own kitchens. Sherri says that her staff is most proud when a parent calls to ask for a recipe because their child wants to cook the family dinner. “THAT is better than any trophy,” SherriThesays.needs of the families they serve are always the main priority for the staff of Culinary Kids. Each staff member is trained to prepare ingredients for students with food allergies and specific dietary needs. The Culinary Kids kitchen is also equipped to welcome any and all students, with a special All Abilities class designed for those with specialSherrineeds!andthe staff of Culinary Kids are truly dedicated to the children and families that they serve. Clearly, this genuine love for their students mixed with the knowledge of knowing their way around the kitchen is the perfect recipe to create something memorable, magical, and MMMM delicious!

This busy family has found their place in The Sanctuary. They love all the space they have around them especially the wooded areas that offer such peace.

AUTHEMENT FAMILY T

The Authements enjoy being outside, whether swimming in their pool or cooking in their outdoor space.Another notable element to their home, which the family loves the most, is their living room. This favorite room boasts 24-foot cathedral ceilings made of reclaimed wood from the original Levi Strauss production facilities. Likewise, the wood floors also By Greta Honsberger

Our Cover Family, Joseph, and Megan Authement, are the parents of Hyland, a sophomore at St. Paul’s, William, a 7th grader at Mary, Queen of Peace, and Isabelle, a fourth grader also at Mary, Queen of Peace.

he Authements moved into their new home in The Sanctuary two years ago, but the process of building their dream home included spending a year just to draw up the plans making the entire process a two and a half year adventure. Creating their own home was an obvious labor of love and perfection.Theidea that would become a reality was to build a multi-generational home in a quiet area. The challenge was finding a lot large enough for such a home. Megan explains that they were always looking for the right size lot for their family home, including enough space for the five of them, along with Joseph’s parents, Rickey and Pam. The Sanctuary accommodated their needs perfectly.

and the comfortable feel of the open floor plan. If the Authements aren’t outside enjoying the tranquility of their outdoor space, they are most likely in this comfy and timeless room. When it comes to decor, it is evident that this family has a genuine appreciation for the past as well.

The Sanctuary Living | 19September - October 2022 came from the old Levi Strauss building. Megan says that these floors are Joseph’s favorite feature in the home. Another incredible detail in this space is a painting by local artist Inga Falterman. The inception of this custom painting began in the early stages in the building process when they were framing the home. Because of the 24 - foot ceilings and the desire for something bright and representative of Louisiana, the Authements commissioned Falterman. Knowing the space was significant in size, early on, she began painting the Live Oak that hangs prominently over their fireplace. This treasured painting is another family favorite. The well appointed living room is loved because of the rich history in the flooring and beams, the custom made Inga Falterman painting,

Megan was sure to mention her favorite piece, which is an antique barometer that hangs in their dining room. This gorgeous piece of gilt carved artistry is 18th century French, in the Louis XVI style. Megan, and decorator Corrin Fisher, have combined antiques with new furnishings from places like Greige Furnishings creating the perfect ambience of old and new.

It is obvious that Joseph, Megan and their three children value time spent outdoors and time spent together. The family enjoys going to Shell Beach, where they keep a boat and love to go out fishing.

Seaside and Orange Beach are also spots the family likes to visit for a break to recharge from their busy life. The Authements enjoy cooking at home, but on the occasion when they go out to dinner, they frequent local places like Coffee Rani, Greyhound, and Fazzios. If Joseph and Megan are looking forward to a date night, they enjoy Del Porto or Pardos. k

20 | The Sanctuary Living September - October 2022 These nights out are a refreshing change from their normal routine. Favorites for shopping locally are Paisley, Villa, Mackenzie and Me, and the ever timeless Perlis for the grownups. Hyland and William appreciate Second Serve Tennis for their local tennis needs, and Blossom Girl is best-loved for Izzy’s shopping pleasure. Finally, Megan and Joseph Authement are leading by example when it comes to teaching their three children about the importance of giving back to their community. An important cause they are dedicated to is Hog for a Cause. Since 2009, Hogs has raised millions of dollars for pediatric brain cancer research and much needed help for their families. The founder, Becker Hall, is a childhood friend of Joseph’s, which is how the Authements became involved in their ten year, unwavering support. Their involvement became more significant the past two years as they hosted Party for the Cause at their home. Their hosting efforts have been a huge success, raising over $130,000! Their efforts in teaching their children to give back is absolutely becoming a reality. The youngest Authement, Isabelle raised $1,500, herself, by making and selling bracelets at the event. What an incredible example to teach yourForchildren.theAuthement Family, The Sanctuary checks all their boxes in terms of space, tranquility, and the beauty of a multi-generation home. This family of five, plus grandparents, along with their menagerie: BB, Dixie, Tamale, the appropriately named chihuahua, Skeeter, and Nutmeg the Guinea pig, are truly home.

Those who work with Laurie share her insight into breaking the business stereotypes that often create barriers. Those who come to Honda of Covington in search of a positive buying experience are met with just that. The folks at Honda of Covington strive to make every aspect of their services low-stress, fun, exciting, and, yes, even relaxing. This business philosophy is the cornerstone of Honda of Covington and surely explains why it is called the “Happy Honda Place.”

The customer service and easy shopping experience are what sets Honda of Covington apart from its competition. “It’s different when you shop here,” explains Todd. Part of this painless experience is attributed to the insight of Laurie McCants, Managing Partner/General Manager. Laurie has an understanding of the customer, particularly women car shoppers. She knows very well what women do not like when they enter a car dealership. Knowing this, she has made it her mission to eliminate these “barriers to entry” and remove the stereotypes often associated with this business. This is important because shopping with ease and not under pressure is how most people are able to feel good about such a large purchase. The lady at the helm, Laurie McCants, also has a clear understanding of the importance of giving back to her community. She has spent many years dedicated to active volunteer board involvement with such foundations as the St.Tammany Parish Hospital Foundation Board of Trustees as a 12-year member and 2-year chairperson.

Director Todd Napier wants to clarify the Covington of Honda car shopping experience. “Our goal is to make customers for life and to have them experience car buying as it should be.” And exactly what should car buying be? Todd simplifies this often stressful experience by saying that buying a car should be, “Fun, exciting, and relaxing.” Honda of Covington is sure to roll out the red carpet for their customers because, ultimately, lifelong customers make the best customers. Truly, Honda of Covington is getting it right as they see the same customers year after year buying seven or more cars through the years. This, I am told by Todd, “is commonplace.”

The Sanctuary Living | 21 CovingtonHONDA OF Honda of Covington has been around since 1998 serving the Northshore area and beyond for good reason. Offering the most professional and best sales service is a big part of their success, but that is only a part of theMarketingstory.

Laurie’s philanthropy efforts are a top priority. Her community involvement and leadership are commitments to which she is happy to spend her time. Continuously giving back to her community as well as bringing a special insight to the buying experience at Honda of Covington makes Laurie McCants, not just a leader, but a leader with a big heart.

Hopefully, you will never need any of these documents, but if you don’t have them and your student becomes incapacitated, you may have to go to court and request guardianship for the legal rights we’ve just discussed. This process will take time and could end up costing you thousands of dollars. These forms are reasonably inexpensive to put in place, so you can have peace of mind while your student is off living their college dream. We recommend using a licensed attorney, like the Law Queens, to ensure that the forms are drafted properly and in accordance with the law. Executing these simple but important legal documents will ensure that you are able to take care of your adult child should a situation arise, which gives every parent peace of mind. 2. Execute a Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act release form, (HIPAA). A HIPAA form provides you with access to your adult child’s medical records and allows doctors to discuss his or her healthcare with you. Without a HIPAA form, you likely will not be allowed to view test results or other information. A HIPAA form will also allow you to receive and discuss your adult child’s medical bills with the hospital, doctor’s office, or health insurance company. A HIPAA and a POA differ in that a POA designates you as the person who will make medical decisions on behalf of your adult child should they become incapacitated, which you cannot do with only a HIPAA release form.

So, your child is going to college! What an exciting time! Before the fun and learning begin, though, there are so many decisions to make, from what your child’s major will be to what dorm décor will they choose. Those are important things to consider, but one of the most important decisions you can make is something you may not even be aware of. Although we still view them as kids, most college students are legal adults, which means that in the event of an emergency, you most likely will not be able to access their financial or medical records or even discuss healthcare options with their doctor. Do not panic because there are three easy things you can do that will save you a lot of time, headache, and money.

PetsFAMILY One recent afternoon, the Donahoe family welcomed me into their home. I had come to meet Bailey, Roux, and Wrigley, three adorable dogs who could not be more different. When I rang the doorbell, a crescendo of barks echoed from behind the door. I knew I was at the right house. When the door opened, I was greeted by the very cute, fury trio accompanied by the ever-adorable Donahoes: Danny, Melissa, Casey, Cassidy, Cohen, and Cameran. It didn’t take long to get acquainted with this crew and learn all about this sports-loving family and their faithful furry companions. In 2009, the first pup to become a part of the Donahoe family was Wrigley. A chocolate and beagle mix, the sweet old girl shows her age in her beautiful graying face. Wrigley is short like a beagle but has the coloring and head structure of a lab. Knowing that she was half beagle, Danny and Melissa assumed she would be a howler, but this little lady has no interest in howling or even barking. Ms. Wrigley is a classic beauty who has little to say, which is not necessarily a bad thing in the Donahoe house where almost everyone has lots to say! If you are wondering about her name, you likely guessed correctly in that she is named after Wrigley Field. The Donahoes are big baseball fans, and the Chicago Cubs are their team! The mere mention of baseball, or sports in general, brought about enthusiastic banter about their favorite teams. Casey led the conversation with his vast knowledge of all things sports: current, and past. I learned real fast that sports are a very important part of the Donahoe’s world. Keeping this in mind, and the fact that her husband is a huge Chicago Cubs fan, Melissa agreed to name their new baby Wrigley, but only, she said, “if her middle name can be Field.” At 13, Ms. Wrigley Field Donahoe is the O.G. of this fury trio. The second dog to become a member of the Donahoe family was Roux, aka Rouxster. The only male dog, Roux comes in a petite package but tries to be the dominant, big man. Melissa explains that his effort is a complete fail because in reality he is the neediest of the three and wants all the attention. Roux, another rescue, is a mix of Maltese, Bichon, and Chihuahua. He has the physical features of the Maltese and Bichon, with red soft fur and a fluffy tail. Clearly the chihuahua comes out when he tries to be the ‘big man’ but fails miserably and melts into a needy puddle of love. Finally, the most recent pup to join the Donahoe crew arrived last August at about 8 weeks old. Bailey, or Bailey’s Irish Cream, as Danny likes to call her, is an Irish Wolf Hound. “Why an Irish Wolf Hound?” I asked. Danny explained that it is a breed that he always wanted. When Bailey arrived, she was pretty small, but now, she weighs 195 pounds and is a lanky goofball of pure love who could easily be compared to Marmaduke. With her wiry hair and skinny but deadly tail, she towers over Wrigley and Roux. Bailey is completely unaware that she is so large and wants to be in the middle of all the action with the four Donahoe children. Like all Irish Wolf Hounds, she is friendly and relaxed, which was an absolute must for that third Donahoe dog. Technically, Bailey is Danny’s dog, but don’t tell that to four-year-old Cameran who is often snuggled up with Bailey on the sofa. It is not unusual to find this big goofy girl in a heap on the sofa with Cohen or Cassidy as they relax after a long school day. Being a giant snuggle bug may well be what Bailey does best. One thing is certain when it comes to Wrigley, Roux, and Bailey. These three pups love their people - one and all. The four Donahoe children range in age from four years to ten years. They are typical children who are busy and active, even sometimes rambunctious. I was amazed to see that the three dogs, even geriatric Wrigley, patiently and, even enthusiastically, join right in with the kids. Each dog is extremely gentle, even when in a serious neck grip of love from a little person. The best description of their interaction is to compare it to that of siblings. When I left the Donahoe house that day, I reflected on my short visit with a truly warm and loving feeling. I came to realize that Danny and Melissa have seven children, really. There are seven Donahoe siblings that are all very different. In addition to the seven children, include a wonderful and loving mom and dad, and when you put them all together, they sure are one beautiful family!

Did you know that ticks can go without food for up to TWO years sitting on a blade of grass waiting for you or your dog to be its host? They thrive in damp environments. Most ticks will accumulate on the face, ears, or armpit areas, but check everywhere after outdoor play. There are wonderful natural tick repellents that contain essential oils. We like the brand Pure and Natural for these convenient sprays and wipes. Just a little wipe down before a walk, and you can help deter ticks from attaching.

The Sanctuary Living | 27September - October 2022 Dr. G.PET TIPS BY

1. There is a fungus among us… ‘Tis the season for mushrooms! They will soon start to pop up on the front lawn, back yard, and along walking routes. While most mushrooms are safe for ingestion, others can be highly toxic. Like me, you probably aren’t a mushroom identification expert, so just say, “no” to all mushrooms your pet encounters. It’s not worth the risk, so pay attention during walks and when your dog is sniffing around in areas of higher grass. If you think your dog has ingested a mushroom or any other toxic substance, call the ASPCA animal poison control center at 888-426-4435. There are board-certified toxicologists on call ready to help you with any poison event.

2. Wildlife alert It’s almost hibernation time! This means that wild animals, like skunks and snakes, are out and about, busily preparing for their winter nap. If you are traveling in wooded areas, keep watch for small animals or reptiles and keep your respectful distance. Most wildlife will scamper or slither away when you and Fido approach.

We offer holistic, full-service treatments for pets. We have two full-time doctors who are extremely passionate about the integrative approach to total pet wellness. If your pet is family, and your goal is for your pet to live his longest and healthiest life, come see what we do here! What Sets Our Practice Apart? It makes my heart happy to see the number of senior dogs living their best lives at 16+ years old because of what we do here.

5. Check for ticks

4. What about the joints? Often pets with arthritis, or joint disease, experience more discomfort during cooler temperatures. If you see any limping or decreased desire to go on walks, it’s time for a veterinary check-up. At VetNaturally, we have many holistic options for joint and arthritis support, including omegas, Assisi loops, Dasuquin, massage, and other holistic remedies for joints. In fact, if you go to our Instagram, and click the link tree at the top, you can download our free guide to helping your old dog thrive. This FREE download has our top tips and tricks to keeping your dog healthy and moving well.

3. Let there be light Days will soon get shorter, so make a plan for how you will be walking your pet with less daylight. In Louisiana, this is a welcome event with respect to the heat index. However, we still have to plan for the dangers night walking will bring. It’s hard for a car driving by to always see a dog. I recommend reflective collars, reflective vests and even wearing reflective gear on your person.

The next time you see Charlotte behind the scenes taking care of every aspect of your neighborhood pool experience, take note of her professionalism, dedication, and friendly disposition and know that she is genuinely combining water safety with life skills for kids all over the Northshore.

All of those who are employed with Safewater are trained to follow the same work model, which is strong leadership. A summer spent working with Charlotte and Safewater is clearly more than just a job. It is an opportunity to witness leadership and to exercise leadership on the job, but also in life.

Continuing to go strong in the Mandeville/ Covington area with Charlotte directing every aspect of the day to day, Safewater is equipped to handle all aquatics needs, whether large of small. Charlotte and her people fill all pool related needs, including expertly-trained lifeguards services, swim team organization, swim coaches for neighborhood swim teams, and swim teachers for lessons of all ages. In expanding on the objective of Safewater, Charlotte shares, “It is our goal to provide the most competent employees to work in a consistent, well organized, healthy, safe and friendly environment.”

You probably haven’t been to The Sanctuary neighborhood pool and not seen Charlotte Boswell running around checking things out and making sure all is safe and in proper order. It doesn’t take long to see that Charlotte, owner, and creator of Safewater, has a work ethic and devotion to her job that is second to Safewaternone.came about in 1996 when Charlotte attended a swim meet in Atlanta and met an employee from Swim Atlanta. This employee really knew the ins and outs of the business and was willing to share her knowledge with Charlotte. From this conversation, she gleaned a wealth of information about a business that she had been thinking about for a while. At that time, her goal was to form a company that would allow her to work in the summer, because she loves being outdoors, and have winter off, while also incorporating her love of swimming, pool safety, and mentoring young adults.

Through Safewater employment, the ultimate goal, says Charlotte, is to give job opportunities that are “created for students to develop like-long leadership skills that will enable them to be successful and productive individuals in their selected professions.”

Caroline Todd is that rare practical, generous, and thoughtful girl that every parent hopes to have. When I asked her what she would do with the money if she won the lottery, she didn’t balk at all when she explained, “I would give some of it to the poor and save some of it for college and later in life.”

The Sanctuary Living | 29September - October 2022 KidsJUST FOR For this issue of The Sanctuary Living’s “Just for Kids” feature, I would like to introduce your neighbor, Miss Caroline Todd. Twelve-year-old Caroline is a sixth grader at Mary, Queen of Peace School, where math and science are her favorite subjects. She is a sharp young lady who is an excellent student in all subjects because she takes her studies seriously. Make no mistake, though. There is far more to this young lady than her academic brilliance and beautiful smile, which she absolutely has, by the way. In addition to her academic success, Caroline is also very dedicated to playing soccer. Her soccer career began at age three when she first hit the soccer field and fell in love with the game. At age eight, she joined the Mandeville Soccer Club. Since then, she has grown in her skills and developed maturity in the game which has made her a formidable soccer opponent. She and her MSC team proved their worth in May when they took home the title of state champions for their age group. This is a title that Caroline is proud to own because she and her team fought hard to make it through to their final victory. This little blonde powerhouse is actually quite multi-layered. When she isn’t studying, practicing soccer, or playing soccer, she loves spending time with her family and playing with the family dogs, Piper, Caroline’s favorite, and Bridger.

Another of her favorite hobbies is arts and crafts.

middle child of Laura and Clark Todd, little sister to Cooper, fifteen, and big sister to Kate, ten, she loves to visit Montana. Traveling to this family-loved destination gives Caroline and her family the opportunity to spend time together hiking, skiing, and golfing. This is a family trip that she enjoys and looks forward to taking as often as possible.

Caroline is a bit shy at first, but once she begins talking, she freely shares who she is. It is easy to pick up on her polite confidence and refreshing to hear her sincerity. Throughout our specifically, conversation, when she talked about soccer, I kept thinking of the Shakespeare quote, “And though she be little, she is fierce.” Remember this petite, athletic, and all-American girl Caroline Todd because her future is quite promising.

The

She likes painting and all kinds of drawing, but I get the impression that if she had to choose, she would be outdoors swimming in the family pool or kicking around a soccer ball!

The inception of K. Lyn Photography began twelve years ago when Kasey, working as a dietitian, was honing her photography skills in a night class in order to take better pictures for her nutrition blog. During this time, Kiley, Kasey’s sister, reached out to her talented sibling in need of a family Christmas photo. Kasey was more than happy to help. The sisters decided to make a fun day out of it using New Orleans Christmas scenes as the setting for the pictures. This event and the photos it produced would lead to a turning point in their future. As soon as Kiley sent out the adorable pictures on her Christmas cards, people began to ask her who her photographer was. In no time, a new career was afoot. Kasey explained the progression of this dream job for the two sisters, “Our business started as a side job for both of us and gradually expanded over the last twelve years to both of our full-time careers.”

The photographs created by these sisters reflect the love and genuine enthusiasm they have for their subjects and their profession. Kasey and Kiley make every photography session a special experience so that each image is as unique as the subject it reflects. Their timeless and unique style create memory treasures that will look beautiful in any home for decades.

Today, this woman-owned, family business has studios located in Madisonville and Metaire. Kasey and Kiley love capturing children from the newborn phase to any and all important milestones through the years. Obviously, those shoots can be a bit challenging and unpredictable, but as Kasey explains it, the sisters can work their magic. “The clients refer to Kiley as the ‘baby whisperer,’ because she is gifted with the ability to soothe and pose newborns.”

Gavin Jobe, owner of Meribo Restaurant generously provided the food, as well as his staff for support. The Northshore Hogs for the Cause team, Hogwatch, was also in attendance to lend a hand wherever their help was needed. A live and silent auction was held in the early evening, followed by music around the pool as the guests mingled throughout the night. Becker Hall, founder of Hogs along with Zaindy Raniold, Hogs CFO spoke to guests on the impact each and every member of the community has by attending events such as thisTheone.Authement family-sponsored event had a wonderful turnout with three hundred plus guests in attendance, triple the size of the previous year. The result of the evening was a great success, as they raised nearly one hundred thousand dollars for the Cause. Be on the lookout for year three to be a smashing success, as well.

The Sanctuary Living | 31September - October 2022 CauseHOGS FOR A Joseph and Megan Authement hosted their second annual Party for a Cause on Saturday, August 13, 2022. It was a lovely and well-attended event with one hundred percent of the profits benefiting Hogs for the Cause. This important, local non-profit contributes to pediatric brain cancer patients and their families by giving them help and support.

The neighborhood clubhouse and pool were the settings of BIG FUN at the Back to School Luau. This event took place on Friday, August 12th, and was filled with swimming, Honey’s snowballs, food, and drinks. A big shout out to The Sanctuary HOA for sponsoring this end-of-the-summer fun!
