What a Summer it’s been! Dear J Family,
It’s been quite a summer, hasn’t it? We cannot thank you enough for your support and cooperation as we reopened and adjusted our procedures. With your help, we were able to open our fitness centers and pools, provide personal training and in-person group exercise classes (along with our many virtual fitness offerings), open our Early Childhood Centers, resume Adult Day at the J programming, provide meals through our 613 Catering and Meals on Wheels, reimagine J Day Camps with Summer Fun at the J, offer Family Getaways at Camp Sabra, and host many adult programs through our Center for Jewish Life and Cultural Arts departments. Our staff is committed to serving you and your families, no matter the challenges thrown our way – and there have been many! We appreciate your feedback and suggestions, too, so keep them coming. Leave us a message at jccstl.com/contact Summer isn’t over yet! We hope you can take advantage of the extra weeks our pools will be open, and that you can join us for one of the many other programs listed in this guide. We have limited spaces left in our Club All Day program to support families whose children will be learning virtually when school starts, and we can even help you register to vote! We are working hard on our Fall programming, too. We’ve reimagined our Jewish Book and Film Festivals, we will be hosting our J’la (our annual fundraising gala) virtually, and more. I hope you enjoy the remaining weeks of warm weather, and, as always, hope you and your families stay healthy and safe. Know that the J is here for you, and that we never take for granted your membership or your support. We’ll continue to get through this challenging time, together. Sincerely, Lynn Wittels President & CEO lwittels@jccstl.org

A DONOR DRIVE-IN THANK YOU A Reimagined Night of Gratitude for Our Donors
On Sunday, May 31, the J hosted its first drive-in movie to recognize and honor our donors. The movie, shown on an inflatable screen was, appropriately, Groundhog Day. The event was enjoyed by all.

Adult Day at the J Tackles Challenges Head On
Connections and In Program staff remained committed during shutdown and show no signs of slowing down since re-opening.
During the past months, our Adult Day at the J program has gone above and beyond to ensure that all participants have felt supported and connected. During our 11-week closure, the ADJ team committed to engage with participants and their families every day - directly, virtually, and through case management to set up outside services if needed. Team members conducted daily wellness calls for all participants and sent frequent emails and messages to participants and caregivers. While maintaining appropriate distancing, our staff provided no-contact, weekly deliveries of activity packets and supplies to the doorsteps of every participant. Staff has embraced available technology by offering weekly themes for daily activities for both groups, specific to young adults with disabilities and the senior participants. Private Facebook Groups were created and maintained as a means for helping participants stay connected with staff and their peers. Staff has also utilized these groups to provide families with a valuable communication tool, posting several times daily, seven days per week, in addition to hosting live streaming events.
ADJ reopened its doors on June 8, and has welcomed back 28 individuals for on-site programming, while continuing to provide virtual programs and support to those who remain at home. Live streaming connects the groups to each other. The ADJ team says the positive feedback shared by the families provide the motivation and inspiration to keep innovating and serving during this challenging time.
What are the Programs of Adult Day at the J? The ADJ is composed of two groups, Connections and the IN Program. CONNECTIONS is a full-day program, which provides social, physical and cognitive stimulation for adults who may require more assistance during the day. Activities include daily exercise, therapeutic art, music therapy, sensory gardening, modified sports, Wii® games, iPad technology, small-specialized groups and intergenerational events. The IN Program (IN) is for individuals 18 and older with autism spectrum disorder, Down’s Syndrome or other intellectual/developmental disabilities. IN is designed to foster independence and inclusion, and inspire young adults with disabilities to achieve their personal goals. IN aims to maximize the person’s experience by offering a full day of activities geared toward skill building within a structured group. It offers a variety of trained professionals offering unique services such as personal fitness training, Tai Chi, aquatics, yoga, music therapy, horticulture therapy, pet therapy, and a multitude of skill-building volunteer activities. If you would like more information on either CONNECTIONS or the IN Program, please contact Kristen Conard at 314.442.3261 or kconard@jccstl.org

Program Guide | Late Summer 2020 | jccstl.org
How has the ADJ Handled Covid? Conducted and coordinated over 540 hours of virtual programming, more than 180 hours of exercise, 36 hours of music therapy sessions, 100 hours of cognitive/ reminiscence programming and 130 hours of STEAM activities.
This included: two weekly music therapy sessions...group
Reminiscence discussions...themed trivia...Friday dance party...Shabbat service...two weekly Tai Chi sessions... Chair Yoga...three weekly Zumba classes...STEAM activities...three weekly art expression activities...social skill builder sessions...book club sessions...mindfulness & meditation sessions...and so much more!
While some participants have been able to return to the J since we reopened, many have not. The impact the staff of the ADJ has made is beyond quantifying. This is just a sampling of comments from the families of participants of both programs. It easy to see the impact this amazing team was and is continuing to have in the community.
“
Although in mid-March, for several reasons, we had asked to put Bob’s membership on hold, you kindly included him in the virtual Connections program you started. I think he began participating on Zoom a month or more ago, and he has enjoyed some of the activities very much! His favorites have been the exercise classes, the travelogues that have been put together by Cathy and others, Cynthia’s meditation and chair yoga, and the quiz-type sessions. All good, and all creative!”
(names withheld)
“
“Hello, Ashley and Kristen,
Kristen, Ashley and Team, You guys are just incredible! I can’t believe all that you do for the adults. I didn’t know why we got packets, but then I realized it came from you guys. You are the best!!! Thank you so much,
“We are extremely grateful for the amazing commitment and support we continue to receive from your team during this time!!! Your virtual meetings and activities have been absolutely wonderful! These video conferencing activities have helped keep Matthew connected and active during these difficult times!”
“Bob looks forward to getting the schedule each day, which adds some much-needed structure to his day. We thank you very much for that! He has needed that more than we realized, especially during this unusual health crisis when it’s unsafe to try to follow our old, comfortable routines.” jccstl.org | Zoom | Facebook

Program Highlight Jewish Book Festival and Jewish Film Festival will Present Back-to-Back, Virtually JBF Keynote Announced and for first time the Book & Film Festivals Set to Go Viral this November For 41 years, the St. Louis Jewish Book Festival has brought hundreds of authors to our stage and welcomed thousands of people to the J for thought-provoking discussions, side-aching laughs and illuminating stories. For 24 years, the St. Louis Jewish Film Festival has shown national and international cinema at partnering theatres. These films have explored universal issues through traditional Jewish values, opposing viewpoints and new perspectives. During this surreal time, who better to kick off these exciting weeks than a Hollywood director? While the characters in Men in Black are out saving the world, the man behind the film series, Barry Sonnefeld, will serve as the keynote presenter for the Jewish Book Festival. The TV and film director graces our screen on Sunday, November 1 to discuss his new book, Call Your Mother: Memoirs of a Neurotic Filmmaker. In his memoir, Mr. Sonnefeld traces his idiosyncratic upbringing in New York City, his break into film as a cinematographer with the Coen brothers, and his unexpected career as the director behind such huge film franchises as The Addams Family and Men in Black, Get Shorty, Pushing Daisies and A Series of Unfortunate Events. In addition to Mr. Sonnefeld, you can “tune-in” to see other authors who will be available for viewing from the comfort and safety of your own homes including Festival-favorite Ron Balson (Eli’s Promise), New York Times bestselling author Sarah Paretsky (Dead Land), Good Morning America host Joan Lunden (Why Did I Come into This Room?) and the Festival will close on Sunday, November 8 with another Festival-favorite, Bruce Feiler (Life is in the Transitions).
Premiering Monday, November 9, the St. Louis Jewish Film Festival features 12 films, produced all over the world. Highlights of this year’s Festival include Fiddler: A Miracle of Miracles, a focus on the tradition of Fiddler on the Roof. It is a look at how the icon of the stage and screen was born and includes excerpts of performances, from suburban middle schools in the U.S. to grand theatres in Japan.
Also taking to the screen is The Spy Behind Home Plate, which tells the story of Morris “Moe” Berg, the enigmatic and brilliant Jewish baseball player who played during MLB’s “Golden Age” in the 1920s and 1930s, but also worked for the Office of Strategic Services, spying in Europe and playing a prominent role in America’s efforts to undermine the German atomic bomb program. Take advantage of this virtual format to create a theme around each session or film! We’re keeping some of your favorite festival traditions alive, including raffle sales with fantastic prizes, courtesy of our community partners. The Fall Premier Pass, which grants access to all St. Louis Jewish Book Festival authors through December 31 is only $95. For the first time, an all-access Jewish Film Festival pass is also being offered, also for $95. Fall Premier Passes, Jewish Film Festival passes, and individual tickets for each Festival go on sale in early September. 7

Is Intuitive Eating Right For You? Registered Dietitian Jamie Livaudais explores eating philosophies and more in online videos in the J Fitness & Personal Training Facebook Group More than a year ago, the J expanded its fitness and wellness services with Nutrition Coaching, made possible by the addition of Registered Dietitian and Personal Trainer, Jamie Livaudais. Throughout the period since the coronavirus hit, Jamie has used Facebook as a primary source for her nutritional advice and wisdom. Being at home for such long periods unchecked with whatever food is in the house challenged many of us over the past months. Jamie has offered ideas and tips and on how to stay true to yourself when it comes to food. One of Jamie’s popular Facebook topics has been introducing her own nutrition philosophy, intuitive eating. This form of eating is an approach to health and food that has nothing to do with diets, meal plans, discipline or willpower. Its basis is it to teach someone how to get in touch with their body cues, such as hunger, fullness and satisfaction with an eventual outcome of learning to trust your body around food. As a dietitian, Jamie is keenly aware that not everyone is necessarily ready for every aspect of intuitive eating, especially the first few times she may meet with them. One mental block that often has to be overcome is to reiterate that that while intuitive eating is a (potentially very healthy) practice, it is not weight loss centered. However, that does not mean that weight loss shouldn’t be a secondary goal, and often one will find that there may be weight loss as a result from new healthier habits. When mapping out this plan with clients, she brings some “nonnegotiable” intuitive eating strategies into working towards a
9
Program Guide | Late Summer 2020 | jccstl.org
client’s goals. “I consider these to be nutrition basics, which is essentially, understanding how your body reacts to the foods that you put in it, as well as what your body’s signs are to tell you what and how much nourishment you need. This is where balancing protein, fat and carbohydrate foods and the hunger fullness scale come in,” she says (scale is below). What does this mean in terms of practical use? Think balancing
quality AND quantity of food. Everyone is different so a plan set for one person will most likely never be a complete match for someone else. She takes each individual’s habits as a guide for what they need to improve upon. In Practice For example, maybe someone has no knowledge of what food quality is or has gotten into the habit of getting fast food most days just because it’s easy. This requires starting at the basics by creating more meals at home, getting at least a vegetable or two each day, lowering processed carbs/ added sugars, and ensuring that they are adding lean protein at snacks instead of just reaching for the chips. From the opposite end of the spectrum, say someone eats only nutrient-dense foods and is hyperaware of the quality of their food. However, they don’t know how to eat a “bad” food without going overboard on portion. This would be a matter of getting more balance in the diet and reintroducing small portions of their favorite foods regularly, so they no longer feel that “all or nothing” mentality. For yourself, take an in-depth look into your eating habits. Everyone (more than likely) knows they can improve on some aspect of their nutrition. Some weak areas may be regularly skipping meals, eating out too often, or not knowing how add in more indulgent foods without going overboard. Once you identify what needs to improve, work in small goals, but not too many at a time, and give yourself some grace to know that a failed goal just means you gained a learning experience. If you are looking for help in finding balance in your nutrition, you can contact Jamie for guidance. Whether you’re new to your journey or you’ve hit a plateau, she can assist and support the direction you want to go. The J’s Nutrition Coaching is behavior modification and teaches you how to eat well for your body, not dictating what to eat. Jamie has appointments available both online and in person. She is also available as a personal trainer at SFC. To get started, contact her at jlivaudais@jccstl.org or at 314.442.3452. Catch her nutrition tips on Facebook in the J’s group “Fitness and Personal Training at the J” where she posts clips multiple times a week and just wants to make eating healthy and fun!
Signature Training Gets a Refreshed Schedule Beginning this month, the SFC Signature Training schedule has been streamlined so its easier to find a small group that’s right for you. Small group training is a great opportunity to make friends, be accountable and be motivated by others in the group. Some of the long-standing classes remain, of course, such as Box Your B.E.S.T. with Joe Ryan and ongoing classes with Jason Davis. However, some have been renamed, so make sure to check the times and days for your class preference. Monday 7am 12pm 5pm Tuesday 5:30am 12pm 5pm 6pm

Safety. Space. Structure. Supervision.
Let us provide a safe, supervised virtual learning space for your children so that you can return to work. We know parents are worried about the coming school year. In particular, if your child’s school is starting virtually, you are likely wondering how you will manage your workload while supervising your child’s school day. The J is here to help. The Club All Day is a program designed to help families with schoolaged children who will be going to school virtually this fall (whether full- or part-time). We will offer supervision and structure during the school day, plus appropriate breaks for lunch, snack and “recess.” You can feel good knowing that your child is supervised and can be with other children while you are free to work.
