COMMUNITY

Fostering Cebuano Eco-Heroes by Nino Jan V. Miole

Nature, despite being an integral part of human existence, remained an afterthought of economy or industrial development. The centuries of incessant exploitation left our generation as an inheritor of a neglected planet: barren crop fields, wildlife extinction, and melting glaciers. When most people averted their eyes to our collapsing ecosystem, a group of Jaycees who dubbed themselves as, “DMACAO” thought otherwise. They’re among the few advocates who lobbied for a proactive ecological restoration and conservation. Brimming with hope and courage, the DMACAO brothers took the road less travelled by as they devoted themselves in the fruition of their flagship project, Cebu CommuniTREES. THE PLIGHT Cebu is faced with the dilemma of ecological disruption. Apart from deforestation, increasing population growth, and rapid urbanization, the conflicting policies or weak enforcement of laws added to its demise. Given the bleak status quo, DMACAO delineated the 4 pillars that gave shape and direction to their green movement: (1) To promote ecological conservation and rehabilitation; (2) to accentuate ECOducation; (3) to imbibe ECOempathy; and (4) to intensify ECOpacity building

LOOKING BEYOND The team laid out a plan stretching for the entire year, yet was halted due to the global pandemic. However, it didn’t dampen their spirits but served as an opportunity to further improve their programs. The team reassured the public that a pool of activities awaits them for the year 2021. They emphasized that it would be more ECOducational and would cater proactive environmental immersions across the towns of Cebu. With 3 successful programs, team DMACAO is a step closer in healing the disparity between man and nature. Sauntering in their humbling journey, they look beyond to a future of a greener Cebu and the rise of Cebuano Eco-heroes.

2021 TRAINING REVOLUTION by Daryl Nino T. Jabil

With fresh minds aboard the Local Training Bureau for 2021, JCI Cebu kicked off the leadership year with innovations ready to pop like a year’s supply of fireworks throughout the term of 2021 President Clent Medina—aimed to attract the right aspirants, retain good and active membership growth and keep the organization and its projects sustainable for the future generation of Cebu Jaycees. The bureau led by VP-Training Marc Ng & LTD Daryl Jabil, under the mentorship of RTD Jacques Estola & 2014 ATD Rolly Abarro, has activated 13 new trainers in the last 3 months of 2020, ready to mold Cebu’s next generation leaders through these five core #TrainingTuesdays training programs of the bureau for 2021: TRAINERS’ BUBBLE In a bid to hone communication, negotiation, relationship building and presentation skills of JCI Cebu members interested to improve and receive honest—sometimes

harsh— critiques, the “Trainers’ Bubble” program aims to mold more motivational speakers and trainers fit to conquer and inspire a changing world. #QUICKIE: 30-Minute Training Squirts A much needed skill to fight off this generation’s shorter attention span, the training program “#Quickie: All You Need to Know in 30 Minutes” challenges JCI Cebu leaders to keep their talks concise and quick, fostering learning that is insightful enough while keeping the fun. COC: CODERS OF CEBU Aligned with the #MoreForOthers campaign of JCI Philippines for 2021, “Coders of Cebu” is a community training program for qualified but underprivileged young Cebuanos to coding and programming courses under the CodersGuild, which will culminate to them being employed in partner firms. The program is also in partnership with the International Labour Organization, among other sponsors.

BROWN BAG & LUNCHBOX SESSIONS A supplement added a week after every new membership orientation, the award-winning Brown Bag Session created before by 2014 ATD Rolly Abarro has been revived this year to help newly recruited members align their civic goals with that of JCI. To supplement that in a postpandemic way of life, the bureau has added “Lunchbox Sessions.” #AkoBayani: Hybrid OTI JCI Cebu’s brand of an Opportunity to Impact event for 2021 is #AkoBayani — a way of directly calling young Cebuano leaders, entrepreneurs and professionals whose civic goals fit with the JCI Cebu Mission, Vision and Values on heroism. Born out of the pandemic-caused limitations, this OTI format is simultaneously held for both a physical audience and those that are connected via Zoom from home.

WHERE ARE THE

good news

ABOUT C.O.V.I.D.? by Jefferson Ombe

The Coronavirus Disease (COVID) has taken a toll on all of us. Reading all sorts of sad news just to be updated about it made us even eager to find more positivity around us. To find good news about this pandemic, we feature some of our brothers who have exemplified certain values that made them a beacon of hope to many: Nino Miole is a COVID ward nurse at one of the hospitals in Mandaue, Cebu. To perform lifesaving measures while donned in full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), he was doing a very taxing job. Imagine the overwork hours he had to get every single day. He concluded that fear was always there but the tenacity of his spirit was greater than this pandemic. For him, it was a hard decision to continue to work, but a life-changing one not only for himself but for the patients in his ward. When waking up, he always reminded himself that he has to be courageous enough and maintain a smile throughout his work because if he doesn’t do this, who will?

Kyle Alexander Aznar, a businessman, was the project chairman of “Delivering hoPPE” which aims to manufacture and deliver PPE’s to the hardest hit sectors especially health workers in hospitals while providing job opportunities to a number of seamstresses. He added that it is in these times of crisis that a person is needed most in his community is also when that person should be stepping up to do his part.

Philipp Chen Tan believed that mental health is a notable concern and that is why the need to address this during this pandemic was a priority for him. He was the mental health expert in the NUCLEUS MAGAZINE 2021 ISSUE #1 |

project called Hope TV, a live talk in a social media platform. It was in these platforms that different kinds of people realized that their value, may it be in work or to other people in this world, will not have paused because of this pandemic. And that the value of how we all are before all these quarantines will even be strengthened because it is innate that we find our value as humans no matter what the situation is.

President Clent, discussing with Board member Corominas-Toribio, about options on how JCI Cebu can help their district and possible tied up projects.

JCI-Cebu 2021 President, Clent Medina, also saw this pandemic as an opportunity that the society can offer multiple solutions because of the adversity of the organization. He chose to lead despite the challenges he is currently facing – his health, his business, his family. Juggling all these, he served as inspiration to all his brothers. He found ways to keep the organization intact . He always looked at the bigger picture that his one year to lead will be a challenging one, not a walk in the park description but more of a park of obstacles after obstacles that he. Together with his brothers, will overcome these one by one.

Matt “Ginoong” Malagar, as his pupils would fondly address him for being their Filipino teacher, always strived to make each and every lesson a meaningful and fun experience. Matt, now this time how his brothers call him, is a very dedicated educator. The effect on his dedication to find ways to entice his students to continue to learn by formulating and creating PowerPoint presentations and online games, can be seen by all his workmates, the school, his brothers, of course mostly his students. For him, he always thought of teaching as a face-to-face or intimate activity, but during these tumultuous times, he is proud to say that distance learning can also be possible – it just boils down to the dedication and passion of the teacher to his students. As you can see, good news still exists. You just have to know what you’re looking at and understand the stories of people. These five definitely showed their truest potential in being a living testimony of positive change during this pandemic. We may might as well call them the good C.O.V.I.D. of JCI Cebu. C for Nino, the nurse, showing COURAGE every day at his work. O for Kyle, a businessman, not forgetting the purpose of OUTREACH & OPPORTUNITIES to help. V for Chen, the clinical psychologist, who brings out the VALUE of people in their different fields. I for Clent, our president, proving that with the right INSPIRATION, you get to push and solve things. And D for Matt, the educator, embodying DEDICATION to his work. We, the JCI Cebu brothers, have witnessed each of the five’s work and one take-away for all of this is that humanity will always prevail even in hard times. As JCI’s Creed states - service to humanity is the best work of life.
