MANAGER’S NOTES A
warm welcome to Stefan Laird, his staff, players and everyone connected with Abverdeen FC Ladies to McDiarmid Park for this evening’s match. A midweek game at this point of the season is hopefully a chance to create up some momentum and after Sunday’s draw in the heat against Central we’re keen to kick on. Finishing April with a -8 goal difference, conceding 12 and scoring 4, was disappointing, with only the win against Kilmarnock bringing some respite between two heavy defeats. Now the April showers have gone and May is here, it’s time we started enjoying the spring and playing the attractive football we know we can achieve and win games with. We know that Aberdeen will be

Jason McCrindle Manager thinking the same as us after some disappointing results, too, so you can expect a good, close affair this evening. Hopefully not too close however, as we look for move into the second third of the season with a positive performance. I hope you enjoy the game!

DEVELOPMENT RISE Jeanfield Swifts Development have endured a tricky start to their season, with call-offs, matches against the toughest opposition and a couple of tight defeats. But it all came together for their clash with Bonnyrigg Rose. Like Jeanfield Swifts, Bonnyrigg Rose is a community club with big ambitions. They also relaunched a Women’s team this season, and like Swifts have found points hard to come by in the first few games. However, the showdown earned the home side its first three points, emerging 6-4 winners. Swifts took the lead after Paula Strathie’s shot from a corner was deflected into the net, however within 2 minutes Rose levelled from a corner of their own. On the quarter hour, Tara Laughlin latched
on to a perfectly weighted through ball from Eilidh Davies (top right) and fired past the keeper for her second of the season and Swifts’ second of the afternoon. Swifts were in control now, but five minutes from half time gave away a soft penalty when Andrea Melrose was harshly adjudged to have fouled her opponent in the area. Bonnyrigg’s effort was parried by Claire Nellies in goal, but bounced back out off the

The final whistle blew shortly afterwards on what had been an entertaining afternoon’s football, deservedly earning the Riverside outfit their first win of the season. post and Rose’s penalty taker was first to the rebound to slot it home for a 2-2 scoreline after the first 45. In the second half Swifts reasserted their superiority, with Abbie Ferguson (left) and Racel Wolecki (right) combining well for the former to strike and reclaim the lead on 50 minutes. A couple of minutes later another pinpoint through ball from Eilidh Davies found Abbie Ferguson whose touch knocked the ball on to Tara Laughlin for the striker’s second of the game. Rose claimed two goals back after confusion in the Swifts’ defence, but with 9 minutes to go, Louise McClelland ran on to a Paula Strathie corner and fired her shot into the net at the back post to 9 May 2018

’WELL 6-0 SAINTS Saints Women’s trip to Fir Park ended in disappointment as Motherwell ran riot in the first half. While the second half saw Saints restrict their hosts in a more composed performance, the damage had already been done and there was to be no comeback. Manager Jason McCrindle said, “From our perspective, I’m not going to sugar-coat it and say we have learned lessons and move on.
“We need to be tougher physically and mentally when we are under pressure. “Losing goals like that isn’t acceptable; we lost focus and buckled under the pressure.”

TODAY’S VISITORS Today’s opposition make their first trip to McDiarmid Park, having been beaten by Saints at home in February. Like St Johnstone, Aberdeen arrive at McDiarmid Park today following a 6-0 defeat at the hands of Motherwell. The Dons Ladies started the league with a good win on the road against GlasgowGirls, but were hit by a Saints team on form in mid-February. Since then, Aberdeen have lost on the road to FC Kilmarnock, Hearts and Motherwell, with only a win at home against EUHV to add to their points tally as Glasgow Girls also grabbed victory in Aberdeen on Sunday afternoon. Following the defeat at the hands of Motherwell, coach Stefan Laird was frustrated, telling the club’s

PREMIER CLUB We are now in the third season of the Premier League, but what does that mean for the club? Steve Grossi goes behind the scenes.
G
iven I’m not at the game today due to work commitments perhaps this is an opportune time to pay tribute to everyone who helps ensure our matches go ahead, and to give an insight into what as a club we are doing to meet the SWPL criteria for next season. It is so important that our players concentrate fully on the game itself so we are ever indebted to our match day team. The day starts with Stuart Cowper ensuring that all of his cameras are charged and placed ready for the match. Stuart also ensures that the entrances are furnished with tables and cash tins as well as looking after the Player of Match trophy and half time prizes. That area is then handed over to Phil Flynn who collects admission monies as well as trying persuade everyone to take part in the raffle. Phil also draws the raffle and provides entertaining banter to everyone who attends the match. Phil has supported the team and the club for nearly 10 years now. A wee secret is that he will also 14
pick his own player of match every week and offers his comments on the suitability or not of the Sponsors choice ! Whenever Phil isn’t available we are lucky to have John McDonald stepping in as he did for the match against FC Kilmarnock. Two unsung heroes are also John and Dennis our match day caretakers. Both are so much more. They go out of their way to help welcome the opposition and make them feel welcome, look after our girls and then do little things like stick out the corner flags, check the nets and rescue every ball that is kicked over the fence - that make a big difference to us. They are also big fans of the side. Two great guys that we enjoy having on board with us, they are a credit to St Johnstone. As well as looking after players we also need to accommodate spectators and thank to our most recent volunteer we are now improving in that area. Lynne Cowie helps look after us all by serving refreshments pre-match and half-time. At no extra cost Lynne adds in a big smile to every customer !

HELP LUKE Assistant Manager John Fettes is supporting the campaign to secure specialist cancer treatment for Luke Stewart. Luke Stewart was 7 years old when diagnosed with a rare and inoperable brain tumour called Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) in January 2017. There is no cure and average life expectancy from diagnosis is a mere 9 months. Pioneering treatment is however now available in Mexico. It is very costly as well as being 5,000 miles from home. Through the generosity of a growing community Luke started treatment in May 2017 and has shown great improvement. Luke has now had 10 Intra Arterial chemotherapy treatments & 4 Immunotherapy treatments, along with 50 hyperbaric treatments. At £15,000 per Intra Arterial chemotherapy treatment & £25,000 per Immunotherapy treatment, Help Luke fundraising is needed to ensure Luke can continue with these life-saving treatments.
John Fettes heard about the Help Luke campaign after meeting Luke’s dad Mark at the football club attended by Luke’s younger brother and John’s youngest son. After a couple of weeks’ thought about how he could help, John decided to adopt Help Luke as his sponsor free of charge. Luke and his mum Jenny recently went to Mexico for further treatment; with sufficient funds available for just one more session after this one, it is vital that more money is raised for Luke’s treatment to continue. Luke and his family attendes our game against FC Kilmarnock as our special guests, with Luke winning hearts on and off the pitch.. SHOT SQUAD! When she’s not saving shots, Saints’ goalie Corrie McIlravey-Davidson spends her time keeping the peace with Police Scotland. She was recently invited to join the Police Scotland women’s football squad for an inter-force tournament in England, helping the Scots to second place. The Police Service UK Ladies Championship is an annual competition hosted by a different force every year. This year’s competition featured 12 teams, from the British Transport Police, Gwent (Wales) Police Service of Northern Ireland, the Metropolitan Police, Northumbria, West Midlands, Essex, Merseyside, Lancashire, Hampshire and Cheshire. Police Scotland won their group on goal difference, only dropping points in a draw with the Met. That qualified them to play Lancashire in the semi-final, which they won 2-0. WIth group rivals the Met winning the other semi-final, the scene was set for a classic England vs Scotland battle. The Welsh and Northern Irish forces lent their support in the final, singing Flower of Scotland with gusto and waving Saltires. Sadly tired legs meant the Scots came runners up, losing 1-0.
away to socialise and get to know the team on and off the pitch. Host force West Midlands Police put on a great event, with a full social programme including a disco and live band, allowing the players from each of the teams to mingle and get to know each other. While the standard of football is still some way off the Scottish Premier level that Saints play, Corrie reckons the police teams are improving. Next up is a potential GB Police team that is looking to compete in Norway in 2020. Corrie would love to be involved and the coach has already sounded her out. She says if the social side is anything like what the West Midlands force laid on it will be a special event.
If Corrie didn’t know her team mates very well before the competition, having only played two games previously, there was plenGirls in blue: Corrie in goal for PS. ty of opportunity while they were 18 St. Johnstone Women FC vs Aberdeen FC Ladies 9 May 2018
