MANAGER’S NOTES W
elcome to Hearts Women FC, their staff, players and supporters for today’s game. Our two teams are familiar foes by now; this is the third season that we have been in the same division as the women in maroon and white. They say that familiarity breeds contempt, but I have nothing but respect for the way Hearts go about their football. You know you will always face a strong challenge. The first encounter between our two clubs was a friendly in 2013, when we were still Jeanfield Swifts, playing in the East Central League Division Two! Despite suffering a 4-1 defeat that day, we went on to win the league that season and promotion to the First Division. The first competitive game between the clubs came when we gained promotion to the SWPL in 2016. Our head-to-head record since then shows Hearts have won 4 to our 3, with one draw back in May this year.

trip to Aberdeen. We can't change that result, but we know we can and must be better today if we want to take something from the game and continue to fight for second place in the league. It's all shaping up to be an exciting close to the season, so keep on supporting us and we'll repay your loyalty with commitment, endeavour and hopefully results! I hope you enjoy today’s game.
If the head-to-head is slightly in Hearts' favour, a look at the table shows how evenly matched we have been this season. Turning our attentions today's game, we're obviously looking to bounce back from a disappointing 9 September 2018 St. Johnstone Women FC vs Hearts Women

FOCUS ON‌ I
grow up a stone's throw away from Easter Road and as my Dad (also John) was a big Hibs fan and a decent player himself, it followed that I would support my local team. I didn’t really get into playing football until I was around 10 years old, some people who watched me play would say I never got into football! At juvenile level I joined Portobello Thistle for around five years before moving to Hutchison Vale at under 15. Every one of the players in the team went onto senior teams the following year. Throughout this time, I regularly played against the gaffer (Jason) I think we came out about even in our tussles, though I must admit he was really fast and had a wand of a left peg! I was fortunate to play for a lovely coach from Liberton High School, Jim Dobney for area representative teams, Jim was a scout for Rangers and when I left Hutchison Vale, I was asked along to Ibrox. It only lasted a year, but I thoroughly enjoyed my time there, playing with guys like Barry Robson and Barry Cook, the now referee, he was a goalkeeper then! From there I moved briefly to play for Alastair Stevenson at Saint Johnstone in what was the U18 Professional Youth League, following a trip to Ireland to play in the Milk Cup. 4
John Fettes Assistant Manager Alastair was a great coach for me and regularly picked me up off the train and delivered me back to the station after training. I was delighted to see him again when I joined up with the club to take on my present role. Some things never change though; I still see him ferrying players around! One of my early games for Alastair ended abruptly as I was sent off against Cowdenbeath, not a highlight of my time at Saints! I also remember playing Queen of the South in the reserve league in the stadium and getting soaked when the sprinklers came on mid game! I left Saints and joined my old select team manager Tom Hendrie at Berwick for around three seasons, captaining the reserves and youth team. Again, I thorough-

JOHN FETTES ly enjoyed my time at Berwick. I was very well looked after by the older ‘pros’ and always look out for their results on a Saturday. Injuries cut my playing career short and whilst I tried to come back from a horrible hamstring issue, ultimately, I couldn’t shake it off and ‘retired’ before I had really begun! After this, while I occasionally helped coach my brother’s East of Scotland team, Civil Service Strollers, it wasn’t really until I was asked to help at Hawick Royal Albert that I properly got into coaching and managing. After Hawick, I took a break, which lasted until I started working for my good friend Paul Doig at Raith Rovers. I was coaching on a Saturday morning in his Community Programme when the opportunity arose to apply for the role of Raith Ladies coach. I had never coached women before but after a successful interview I was appointed to the role. In the first season we progressed to the last 16 of the Scottish Cup where we played a team called Jeanfield Swifts. We were beaten by the better team on the day but I hated losing! While I was at Raith I met some fantastic people and players and I am still in regular contact with them. We had a great team and the players made my life very easy.
Our win rate was around 80% and we only lost a handful of games over two years. I was therefore delighted that the team was promoted to the first division at the end of last season and I am really pleased to see they are doing well in the league and have moved into Starks Park for their home games. Near the end of last season I decided again to have a rest from football and spend more time with my wife (Lynne) and three boys (Oscar, Caleb and Emerson). However, that all changed when Mr. MCcrindle asked me to join him at Saints. I couldn’t turn down the opportunity to work with Jason and the players and to coach at this level. I have absolutely loved being with the club. The club is definitely moving in the right direction, we are giving players a platform to play football on, in an environment which I feel is conducive to their and our development. I couldn’t do what I do each week and at the weekend if it wasn’t for the support of my family and, in particular Lynne. Throughout my time coaching, she has been a constant positive for me and I am lucky to have that backing, otherwise, without doubt I wouldn’t be at the club.

wo goals apiece for Eilidh Knox and Hannah Clark plus one each from Rebecca Foote and Rachel Todd secured the three points for Saints in their round 15 match against Central FA. New signing Rachel Armstrong came off the bench in the second half, as did U15s future star, Maisy Hathaway, making her SWPL debut at 14 years old.

TODAY’S VISITORS Hearts Women's SWPL2 season has mirrored that of Saints. Comparing the record of today's two teams, it's clear there is little to separate them on paper. Hearts come into today's fixture on the back of wins against Glasgow Girls and EUHV, preceded by a Scottish Cup loss to SWPL1 side Spartans and defeat to resurgent Aberdeen in the league Up front, Hearts goal tally is lower than Saints', having notched up 6 fewer goals so far this season.
However, their defence has proven trickier to break down, conceding an average of 1.31 goals per game to Saints' 2.06.

HEARTS 3-3 DEV M
egan Sidey's goal to open proceedings and a Rachel Wolecki brace earned Jeanfield Swifts Women's Development a point against Hearts Development in the SWFL2 East in Tranent on Sunday. With a depleted squad, Swifts took the game to Hearts from the outset, as lone-striker Sidey hit the bar with an early attempt. In midfield, Wolecki, supported by Mhairi Morrison and 14-year old Eilidh Davies, showed spell-binding control as she eluded the hosts. Hearts had pace to burn on the outside, but Swifts' defence held
their own through great covering from centre half Paula Strathie and a brave performance from goalkeeper Claire Nellies, who suffered a dead leg in the first half. Swifts came back from 2-1 down after 30 minutes to lead 3-2 early in the second half, but the home side stole the equaliser at a corner following a lengthy injury break. Momentum during the final twenty minutes swung from one side to the other, although Swifts finished the stronger as Wolecki joined Sidey up front to search for the elusive winner.
