MANAGER’S NOTES Welcome to Motherwell FC, their staff, players and supporters for today’s game. While today marks the return to competitive fixtures for the Scottish Building Society SWPL teams, we would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to a young lad who touched all our hearts at St Johnstone. Luke Stewart passed away in the morning of 12 July, following a lengthy battle with a rare form of brain tumour. Back in March, we were introduced to Luke Stewart and his family, when our Assistant Manager John Fettes decided to adopt the Help Luke campaign as his sponsor. Luke’s illness was severe and the treatment it required meant weeks away from the family home. But the way the family coped, and Luke’s bravery in particular, was a major inspiration to us as we got to know them better. On 15 April we had the priviledge of welcoming Luke and his family to our home game against FC Kilmarnock. We will treasure the memories of that day.
Jason McCrindle Manager mum and dad continue to work tirelessly in Luke’s memory. Their plan is eventually to establish a hospice for children in East Lothian. Please consider supporting their efforts while you remember Luke with us today.

JADE McDONALD
J
ade McDonald has been voted as the winner of the Scottish Building Society SWPL Player of the Month for June 2018, gaining just over 45% of the public vote. It was a great month for Jade and St Johnstone, winning two of their three matches. This included an impressive 0-3 win away to Glasgow Girls and a stunning 2-3 comeback on their travels to FC Kilmarnock, with Jade scoring the winning goal.

Speaking from McDiarmid Park, she said: “It’s hard to put into words how happy I am to win this award. It means a huge amount as a player to receive this recognition. I’m really pleased. “I have to thank everyone involved at St Johnstone WFC. We’ve had a fantastic spell as a team recently, pushing up the table. As much as it’s nice to win this individual award, I wouldn’t have won it without everyone’s help.”

TODAY’S VISITORS Motherwell’s season to date sees them topping the table with a thirteen point lead. . An administrative error resulted in having to forfeit their first game of the season, but since then the Steelwomen have gone from strength to strength. Many of their fixtures this season have been marked by commanding victories, so it is even more surprising to note that the only team to deny them the full three points following that first-game forfeit is Aberdeen. When Motherwell travelled to bottom-placed Dons at the beginning of June, they must have expected another romp in the park. However, they returned stony-faced from the granite city, scraping a drawwith just nine players on the pitch at the end of the game and another in claret and amber shown red after the final whistle. Motherwell’s 8-1 beating of Cumbernauld Colts in the Scottish Cup resulted in them facing another away trip to Aberdeen in the third round next weekend, in what could be a spicy affair.

EAST FIFE 3-5 DEV Jeanfield Swifts Women’s Development got back to winning ways on a 5-3 win away to East Fife Violets in the SWFL2. After going ahead from a Tara Laughlin strike in the first half, Swifts then conceded before the striker who is the club’s top scorer this season got her second just before half time. In the second period, Laughlin netted her hat trick while Louise McClelland made it 4-1. East Fife would come back to 4-3 due to lapses in the Swifts defence, but Kaitlyn Doig was on hand two min-

utes from time to seal the victory with a fine goal across the keeper. There were good performances all over the park, with the midfield triumvirate of Rachel Wolecki, Paula Strathie and Eilidh Davies in particular dominant in the first half. But it was hat trick hero Laughlin who stole the show, giving Swifts three much needed points to move off the bottom of the table.

DEV 8-1 LOTHIAN Jeanfield Swifts Development went into the game against Lothian Colts FC knowing a good result could lift them away from the bottom of the SWFL2 East table.
A
nother full squad shows the commitment shown by the women playing in the team’s first season. Once again, there was youth on show, with two U15s making the starting line-up. Swifts started quickly and were 2-up in ten minutes, through Tara Laughlin and Megan Sidey. Despite dominating possession and territory, the home side were unable to add to the lead for the next half hour, although Rachel Wolecki had a penalty saved by the Colts keeper. In fact, it was Lothian who would score next, pulling one back on 40 minutes. Conceding the goal spurred Swifts into action and by half time they had extended their lead to 4-1 through Wolecki and Louise McClelland. The second half started in a similar vein as Swifts took charge early on. McClelland was felled in the box after 55 minutes and calmly slotted 5 August 2018
home the penalty. Mhairi Morrison returning from injury came on up front shortly after and netted a brace, while Paula Strathie scored directly from a corner. The final score of 8-1 is a good way to go into the break, though Swifts are under no illusions about the challenge that lies ahead with Kelty Hearts making the journey to Perth for the first match of the second half of the season, on 5 August.
