MANAGER’S NOTES A
warm welcome to Mike Ross, his staff, players and everyone connected with EUHV FC Ladies to McDiarmid Park for today’s match. The third game in eight days at this point of the season is always going to be a test of fitness, but hopefully also a chance to lay down a marker for the rest of the season. Against Aberdeen on Wednesday night I thought the players were absolutely excellent. They were strong in every challenge, and had to be equally physical in possession in the face of an Aberdeen side that clearly wasn’t going to roll over. Today we will need more of the same, and I am sure both sides will put on an entertaining performance.

Jason McCrindle Manager This is our final home game until after the summer break now so we’re determined to go out on a high. Thank you for your support over the past three months, we look forward to seeing you again here in August! I hope you enjoy the game!

SJWFC 2-0 DONS St Johnstone Women recorded their third home win in succession with a two nil win over Aberdeen, the same score from the first meeting in Aberdeen earlier in the season. The home side started the game with clear intent testing the keeper within the first couple of minutes. In the fifth minute they took the lead. A wicked Laura Dunn corner to the far side of the box was met by the head of captain Jade McDonald. Saints continued to press forward looking to double their advantage. Hannah Clark, playing as a lone striker, worked tirelessly harrying an often hesitant Aberdeen defence and keeper
forcing errors and came close to scoring with one. Saints also looked lively through Rebecca McGowan and Rachel 4
Todd on the wings, with the strength of Todd being a real challenge to the Aberdeen defenders. Todd herself grazed the crossbar twice in the first half with strikes on the edge of the box. Aberdeen too had their chances, the best coming in the 38th minute was well saved by Corrie McIlravey-Davidson. The second half saw Aberdeen assert themselves in the game more and Saints found it difficult to create more chances. Corrie McIlravey-Davidson, while never having to test herself too much, had to be quick off her line to smother a number of one on one chances. Saints freshened the legs as the game went on with Niamh Irvine, Emma Sommerville and Ellie May

After the game Manager Jason McCrindle remarked “It was a great victory after a very tough four days with two very difficult games. The girls dug deep though and deserved the win with the amount of determination shown in both games. It was good that we never conceded either, and it gives a boost ahead of the visit of EUHV on Sunday.

FIFTEENS RUN RIOT Jeanfield Swifts Girls U15s faced Murieston United in the Youth Scottish Cup second round, hoping to secure a place in the third round draw. Jeanfield Swifts Girls U15s have progressed to the final 16 of the Youth Scottish Cup with a comprehensive victory over Murieston Utd. The Swifts’ National Performance League status secured them direct entry to the second round, where they encountered the Livingstone-based side that had seen off opposition from Hearts Development in the first round. Playing in front of a supportive home crowd, the Perth side opened the scoring after just 15 seconds when Kaitlyn Doig burst through from the kick off. She nabbed
another five minutes later and the goals continued to flow thick and fast, with notable contributions from Sky Steele, Emma Shipley and Alex Robson, not to mention Leah Sidey who also got in on the act. Meanwhile keeper Katie Duthie secured a clean sheet. Despite the one-sided scoreline, Murieston kept battling throughout and credit must go to their players, coaches and supporters, who were welcome guests in the Jeanfield Swifts clubhouse after the game.

SWIFTS 9-0 MURIE
For their part, the Swifts coaches were especially pleased with the commitment of their girls throughout the match, which went ahead with three Swifts regulars unavailable due to injury and another two away. That had required a reshuffling, the effects of which now provide the coaches with a selection headache as they look forward to what will be a tough run of matches. It starts with Hibernian away on Saturday, before Swifts host Celtic two weekends on the trot in the league cup followed by the league. The third round of the Scottish Cup will take place on the weekend of 16/17 June, when the U15s will face Hearts back at Riverside. 13 May 2018

CENTRAL 1-1 SAINTS Saints Women made the trip to Alloa’s Indodrill Stadium with the hope of reliving past glories achieved there, and putting right a wrong from earlier this season. The home of the Wasps, Alloa Athletic, the Indodrill Stadium holds a special place in the hearts of many who have been involved in St Johnstone WFC in recent years. Speaking after the 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon, Saints WFC manager Jason McCrindle said “We spoke at length before the game about a few things and I felt the players gave everything. They were determined to come away with some-
thing from the game and they’re disappointed with only a point. “We created a number of opportunities and scored a perfectly good goal that was wrongly called offside. I thought the response after losing a goal was great and showed a real desire to get back in the game. We look forward to Wednesday night in what will be another test for the players when we welcome Aberdeen.”

TODAY’S VISITORS EUHV’s season to date sees them with just the one win from six games. A disappointing return for what they had hoped would be a strong second season for their merged outfit. EUHV kicked off their league campaign back in February, taking a point from their Edinburgh derby against Hearts. Speaking to the EUHV magazine, Captain Jude Shepherd said she felt they had played well but failed to capitalise on the chances that came up. Their second game away to Motherwell was always going to be a tricky encounter, with Motherwell’s strength and calibre of player. However, the scoreline shocked even the most hardened supporter as ’Well romped to an 8-0 victory. EUHV then moved on to the relative respite of the League Cup, where being drawn against SWPL1 opposition relieved the pressure and allowed them to regroup. Taking an early lead in the tie, EUHV matched the senior outfit for much of the game, but small lapses in concentration were enough to allow Spartans to progress to the next round. Returning to league action buoyed by the experience of taking an SWPL1 team on and performing well, the EUHV players kept up their momentum against Glasgow 13 May 2018
Girls in their next fixture. They picked up their first three points of the season with a 5-1 victory. Postponements due to the weather meant it was almost a month before the team played its next game, with a trip to Aberdeen on the cards. Unfortunately EUHV were unable to replicate the Saints Women’s exploits of the beginning of the season and went down 4-0 to the Dons on their home turf. The see-saw of emotions then swung back in late April as the Edinburgh team held FC Kilmarnock to a 2-2 draw, and their yo-yo performance was once again evident last weekend as they fell to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Hearts in Dalkeith.

PERFORMANCE For several years, Jeanfield Swifts Girls FC have provided a steady flow of players to the SFA East Region U14 Performance Squad. This year is no exception, with four Swifts currently on the roster. Eilidh Davies has been playing football for Jeanfield Swifts since she was 9 years old, and is now in her second year in the East Region U14s squad. Last year she was selected for the final Scotland U15 camp, narrowly missing out on the match squad picked to play in a triangular tournament against England and Wales. Eilidh also plays basketball and this April won the U14 Scottish Cup with her club, Perth Phoenix.
Abbie Ferguson started coming to Swifts at the age of 5, and is now in her seventh season with the club. Leading the goal-scoring records across the club she has represented for the Scottish Schools East Region and participated in a Scotland U15s camp last year. Abbie also plays Futsal, turning out for a Perth Youth Futsal select team that beat the Australian national team last month. 14

PATHWAY Leah Sidey joined Swifts in 2015 while still playing mixed youth football for Bridge of Earn. With a football pedigree – her father and grandfather both played for St Johnstone – Leah has a wicked left foot that she loves to unleash on unsuspecting keepers. Leah joined the Performance Squad last August and has quickly settled in.
Maisy Hathaway is a newcomer to Jeanfield ranks, having joined from Hearts in March. At her best flying down the left wing, the speedster has quickly become a regular starter in the Swifts U15s. Like Eilidh and Abbie, Maisy also attended the National Camp last year and is looking forward to hopefully repeating the experience in June. Maisy also started out her career playing mixed football, spending her Sundays turning out for her local team Burntisland Shipyard.

HELP LUKE Assistant Manager John Fettes is supporting the campaign to secure specialist cancer treatment for Luke Stewart. Luke Stewart was 7 years old when diagnosed with a rare and inoperable brain tumour called Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) in January 2017. There is no cure and average life expectancy from diagnosis is a mere 9 months. Pioneering treatment is however now available in Mexico. It is very costly as well as being 5,000 miles from home. Through the generosity of a growing community Luke started treatment in May 2017 and has shown great improvement. Luke has now had 10 Intra Arterial chemotherapy treatments & 4 Immunotherapy treatments, along with 50 hyperbaric treatments. At £15,000 per Intra Arterial chemotherapy treatment & £25,000 per Immunotherapy treatment, Help Luke fundraising is needed to ensure Luke can continue with these life-saving treatments.
John Fettes heard about the Help Luke campaign after meeting Luke’s dad Mark at the football club attended by Luke’s younger brother and John’s youngest son. After a couple of weeks’ thought about how he could help, John decided to adopt Help Luke as his sponsor free of charge. Luke and his mum Jenny recently went to Mexico for further treatment; with sufficient funds available for just one more session after this one, it is vital that more money is raised for Luke’s treatment to continue. Luke and his family attendes our game against FC Kilmarnock as our special guests, with Luke winning hearts on and off the pitch..
