Alley Re-Design Process Book Jennifer Losie
Component One
Catalyst 1
To begin myself in the process of redesigning a back alley, I was first challenged to simply go out to the Downtown Medicine Hat area and just wander around all the alleys. While wandering around I was also supposed to document anything that made me think or that I found interesting. On the morning that I went it was a rather cold and miserable day which greatly affected my mindset of the whole walkabout. However I was able to recognize a pattern in what I was looking for as I was looking for social settings. I kept having this lonely feeling around me so I kept looking for something social or that had people in it.
Posters
It was a cold rainy morning.
And I was out touring Back Alleys.
After documenting my social journey, I decided to order them chronologically and turn it into a narrative by putting i into a comic book layout so people can follow through my eyes where I was going, I added a couple pannels of text to add to the comic book style and digitally enhanced the photos so they looked a little more inked and outlined. I was rather happy with the resuts because it caused me to realize how my project was going to be based around social atmospheres and how I can create friendlier and converstaional spaces for sttrangers and friends alike to enjoy together.

Pop Up Park
I decided to focus my location on the Pop Up Park on Third Avenue. It was an intriguing place that had a great concept, but nnot enough application or funds for application. It was the place I kept going back to and found myself smiling as I walked through it. I loved going back to see how things were rearranged and moved to fit different social situations and I often found myself daydreaming the conversations and people who were there before me.
Theme
After deciding a location it was time for me to implicate how I was going to design it, around what? How wuld I envoke conversations between strangers? How would I envoke curiosity? All of these questions made me think about the most wonderful book, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Being a huge influence on my life I decided to take themes of putting people into odd surroundings would envoke curiosity and conversation, so I focused on how Tim Burton used nature, larger than life scale items and settings and tried to add those themes into my design.
Process
The process was a little less than traditional methods, as I was using Sketch-up, a 3-D rendering software, to physically create what I was thinking. Since most of my work was digital I often was kicking myself or not taking a screenshot when I made certain decisions. I mainly used Illustrator to map out my ideas and Sketch-up to implicate them as I found drawing these unreal objects were beyond my skillset.
