Design -‑ Web

Merge Website Grad Show

Merge was our grad show for Medicine Hat College 2015 graduating class. My team and I created this homepage for our website for the event. It features our typeface for the logo among three merging circles from colours of the artwork that serves as a full bleed background. The navigation is small and easily located while not interfering with the imagery.

Macklin Credit Union

Web Design

My first work term at Macklin Credit Union, my biggest project of the summer was to redesign their current website to a modern and more contemporary style. I decided using full bleed photographs would make the website more welcoming for a banking website which would make the user more relaxed and open to new information. Utilizing the blue colour in their branding I was able to create an airy and organized navigation system.

Synetics Industry Concept Design

Synetics industry was a critical design project critiquing our growing dependence towards technology. It was an imaginary company who developed cutting edge technology that would be attached to humans for them to use. I decided the best way to show off the technology was to create a website showcasing their work, utilizing cityscapes and hexagons to give off a more futuristic and metropolitan look to show off the higher end materials. The green was chosen to send a technological feel to the website.

SuitesForRent

Web Design

One of my roles at AdSpark Communications was to develop web mocks and to update clients current sites. This gave me experience using programs such as Wordpress, Sitestage, and Dreamweaver as well as some coding experience using PHP, HTML, and CSS. The SuitesForRent concept I designed was designed to be a clean and modern site used to promote apartments available through the client. Since there wasn’t a need for multiple pages I decided to create a parallax design with minimalistic colours.

Design -‑ Applications

Tea Time Design Personal Branding

I was tasked to come up with a brand image around something I love. So I decided to use my favourite drink, tea, as a design company name. I substituted the traditional business card format with the tea wrapping to further tie into the name Tea Time Design.

Logo Design Branding Apart from web design, I was also tasked with drafting and brainstorming logos with the design team for company clients. Above are a few samples of the work I contributed to the process. Some of which have been used for the clients brand.

Physical Applications Advertising

Here are a few examples of the physical applications I designed whilst at AdSpark. Each design had to have a certain attention to detail as it was used on various platforms such as billboards, poster boards, web ads, and smaller displays.

Type Study

Typeface Development Process Work

I started the development of my typeface by examining Eikko Ojala’s pieces to see how I could create a typeface without literally trying to recreate his works. I decided to focus on what attracted me to his work in the first place, the elegant shadows and lighting that makes his work seem realistic.

I tried to physically recreate the shadows by cutting the letters out of a thick card stock. After a few trials I realized that I would have to approach the task the same way Eikko worked on his pieces, by recreating them in Illustrator and Photoshop. I started to recreate letterforms by making white shapes with shadows in behind to start to manipulate how the letterforms would be read. As I was putting each piece together I noticed how the white shapes started to look as if it was lifted off of the page. After this I started to layer more pieces to give it a three dimensional appearance. Afterwards I decided to entitle the typeface Semblance which means the outward appearance or apparent form of something, especially when the reality is different.

Poster Design Process Work

The next step after creating the typeface was to create a poster for the gallery event. I chose one of his publication illustrations that had an interesting heart shaped island. The first draft of the poster had a resemblance to a magazine layout, although it didn’t have enough breathing room for the typeface and information. My next step was to elongate the poster to give more space between the title and the image.

Poster Design Final Work

After elongating the poster the contrast between the white text and the blue background became a little too dominant so I lightened the blue to create a balance between the two. The secondary typeface I chose to compliment the custom typeface was Roboto, a thin sans serif created by Google. It complimented Semblance in a subtle way without drawing too much attention from it.

Event Programme Process Work

After completing the poster I continued on to create a programme for the event. I chose two pieces of his work that would translate well for a small booklet. The first draft, I selected his faces piece because I thought it would be interesting to literally peel back the layers while going through the booklet. With the help of Photoshop I was able to recreate the pieces. However the booklet seemed too complex and the text fit awkwardly around the heads so I decided to try another draft.

Event Programme Final Work

The second draft I created was using another publication illustration of his. I isolated the blob and positioned it throughout the booklet. The red and white colour scheme created an elegant and more classy booklet. For the body copy I continued with the Roboto family using the Serif face. I manipulated the text so it flowed from red to white throughout the booklet to allow readability and stick with the colour format.
