Where I Left off When I presented my typeface to the class, it fell pretty flat and I was really unhappy with it. So I decided to sit down and reform the typeface. By taking the time to refine the letters I was able to think and concentrate more on what secondary typeface I should be using and how I should be presenting the typeface in print. Although it took a big chunk out of my developing tome it was definitely worth it to have a typeface I was happy with and excited to see in my future progress. As I was working on the typeface I also created the title for the show, entitling it Impressed as to pay homage to his impression with paper and how my first impression of the work was different to what it actually was.

Potential Galleries

Yvon Lambert Gallery The Yvon Lambert Gallery opened in 1966 and held a prominent contemporary collection in Paris, France. It was opened to show off Yvon Lambert’s personal collection but also to feature up and new contemporary artists. I selected this as an option because since Eiko is a rising title in the work of digital art I thought it would be fitting to be in a gallery that features newer rising artists. The interior and exterior of the museum also would reflect his work with the natural lighting form the roof and the mirror like floors.

Remai Arts Gallery The Remai Arts Gallery is an upcoming gallery to be open in Saskatoon SK in 2016. I selected this as an option because it was the first gallery I thought of. I think it was more of me missing home but I looked through the concept art of the gallery and really was attracted to the use of natural lighting through out the artwork. I also liked the mixture of wood and industrial architecture I thought it would make a really nice pairing for the backdrop of his work. However because it is still under construction I decided to not select it to make it easier on myself for working within the building.

Pace Gallery

Pace Gallery is a chain of galleries that reside in places such as London, Beijing, Hong Kong, and New York. It is in New York that olds 3 locations for the gallery which is where I selected to hold the gallery opening. Being able to use three locations in one city is an intriguing thought, being able to use different themes of work for every location. I was attracted to the architecture of the building itself and the surrounding area for advertising. It is a very contemporary mix which would be a good match for his work the industrial look the building has also gives more structure that he uses in his work with the individual cuts in his work.

Selected Work

The work I decided to use for the advertising was more of his editorial and contracted work he’s done for various papers and magazines, they were designed to catch a viewers eye so I decided to utilize that component to make poster and super-graphics easily eye catching. His other work I wanted to use in the show itself is more of his projects he’s done for himself. His glasses series, figure series, and cityscapes are what brought me to like him as an artist so I thought it would be a good fit for giving people a great impression of him as an artist.

Secondary Typeface

Going further through the process I realized I should probably select a secondary typeface to work for the poster and brochure. I looked for a very clean and simple typeface and came down to three finalists. The first was Bodoni. Since it was an elegant and older style serifed typeface, I thought it contrasted a little too much with my modern unique typeface. The second was my favourite typeface Futura. I love geometric fonts and I was stuck on it for a while but with great pain decided to not go with it due to how geometric it is compared to my curved and organic typeface.

The winner of the secondary typefaces is Roboto. It was designed to be the perfect web font and seeing the thin and slender forms was a really nice pairing to the organic typeface Semblance is.

Poster Progress

The progress for the poster started with just playing around with his images and seeing how the typefaces and text could work around the image. I started with a 18x20 sized poster, but after printing it and seeing the text all squished together I realized it needed to be elongated so the text can breathe and have enough negative space.

Graphics Progress

The graphics were a little more interesting to work with. I started by taking screenshots of the surrounding area on Google maps and using trial and error started to places pieces of his work into the urban area, I liked how the colour of the paper popped on the buildings so I decided to utilize the paper and colour to advertise for

Final Work I am more satisfied going into this review than the last. I really liked the poster I created and thought it had more of a balance between his work and the text. I am drawn to the texture of the background and how it ties everything in together.

The Artwork of Eiko Ojala

The graphics I am also satisfied with. I think I need to select a specific range of colours and tone down the use of the variety of colours but that can be added to it after the fact as well. Seeing it printed I think simplifying the colours would help make it develop a hierarchy.
