MUNICIPAL NEWS

Hollywood consolidates 911 system with Broward County BY DAVID VOLZ CORRESPONDENT

dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com

The City of Hollywood is in the process of transitioning to a regional 911 system and implementing a phone routing system to handle nonemergency calls that used to come into the Hollywood communications center. When calling, the City of Hollywood non-emergency number, 954-967HELP (4357) users will hear a menu of departments from which to choose. After making a selection, callers will be linked to the appropriate department. Menu options include non-emergency police issues, public utilities, public works, parks and recreation, parking and building departments. Callers are reminded that if they need emergency assistance, to hang up and dial 911. Hollywood is fine-tuning this call routing system to assure those callers who require a non-emergency police response, can reach a call taker as quickly as possible, while after hours calls make it to the appropriate City department. This is part of a larger effort to regionalize the county emergency

response system. In 2002, residents voted for a countywide emergency response system to address a fragmented system of emergency call processing and dispatching. As more people were using cell phones, a regional 911 system was found to be the best way to eliminate inefficiencies, reduce costs and to have a better emergency response because calls would not have to be transferred to many dispatch centers. Funding for the consolidation of 911 dispatch systems throughout Broward County was approved by the County Commission in 2013. The consolidation is underway and expected to be completed this year. Cities are working to unify 911 operations with Broward County and Hollywood is moving toward unification in June, according to Joann Hussey, spokesperson for Hollywood. Also, Mayor Peter Bober is expressing support for Chief Frank Fernandez. “I think for someone who has been chief for eight months, he has accomplished a lot. More than 50 police officers have been hired in one year. He is employing a lot of technology and new equipment and he is working to restore more. I think he is doing a great job,” said Bober.

HYDE RESORT & RESIDENCES TO BREAK GROUND THIS SUMMER ON THE BEACH BY DAVID VOLZ CORRESPONDENT

dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com

A new residential and hotel facility will soon appear on the beach in Hollywood. During a recent meeting, the City Commission approved on first reading plans for the 460 foot tall Hyde Resort & Residences. The cost of the project is estimated at $240 million and it will feature 407 rooms and 40 stories. It will be located at 4111 South Ocean Drive on a 1.6 acre lot. Groundbreaking for the project is expected to take place during the summer and construction is expected to take 18 months. The building will likely be completed during the middle of 2016. The building will offer a slim appearance. “Hyde Resort is an exciting new development on Hollywood Beach coming off the heels of a serious real estate recession,” said Mayor Peter Bober. “This is a positive reflection on our redevelopment efforts to improve the beach.” Bober said the Hyde Resort will increase the city’s tax base and improve the quality of residential units on the beach. It will also likely lift property values on the beach. “I am a firm believer that we can’t just go to the residents of Hollywood for general fund

revenue. This will help fill the city’s coffers with significant dollars.” The project is expected to have many benefits for Hollywood. “We are excited about its development. It is high end development that will bring a lot of jobs the City. It will generate more tax money for Hollywood. It is all positives as far as the City is concerned,” said Joann Hussey, spokesperson for the City of Hollywood. Another major project in Hollywood is Costa Hollywood. This will be an upscale resort and retail shopping district, which is expected to be completed in 2015. Costa Hollywood will include 307 fully furnished studio, one and two bedroom units, a rooftop infinity pool, entertainment lounge, holistic space and gym and several shops and eateries in its Hollywood Beach Village complex and a synagogue and kosher deli. This condo-resort will be located at 777 North Ocean Drive (technically 342 Pierce Street). Prices will range from $220,000; studio, to $375,000 for a two bedroom unit, according to Hussey.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

Dental Implants can improve the patient’s quality of life By Dusty Garon | Business Correspondent The goal of modern dentistry is to restore the normal form, function and aesthetics of the teeth. Each year, millions of Americans suffer tooth loss primarily due to tooth decay, gingivitis (gum disease), or injury. For decades, the only treatment options available for people with missing teeth were bridges and dentures. Luckily today, advances in dental technology present another option: dental implants. “When a patient has removable dentures they can only chew about 50% of what they could chew with normal teeth,” explains Dr. Hans Sperling of Dental Care Center of Hollywood, “20% of the patients with removable teeth say they eat better without the partials or dentures in their mouth. If you restore their mouth with dental implants and anchor those partials or dentures, that helps tremendously with the way that they are able to chew.” There are numerous advantages to replacing teeth with dental implants. Studies have shown that patients that are able to chew their food properly are able to better absorb vitamins and minerals from their food, resulting in a 30% decrease in medication needed to

maintain health. The inability to chew properly has a direct correlation to chronic illnesses. Another key benefit to the use of dental implants is to prevent loss of bone. “Once you lose function in some part of your body, it leads to atrophy,” says Dr. Sperling, “the same thing happens in the mouth, so as the bones start to atrophy, the appearance becomes different. To be able to restore that function with implants is a tremendous service for the patients. Not to mention the psychological

health improvements of the patient by restoring proper function again. Implants also virtually eliminate the need to use any adhesives or creams to hold the dentures place, which are for the most part toxic.” Dental implants can restore from one missing tooth up to a whole mouth full of teeth. With modern technology, dental implants are placed in an easy and predictable way with options available to suit the individual’s needs such as conventional implants and miniature implants.

The procedure to place dental implants is performed in the dental office using local anesthesia. Conventional root form dental implants have been performed since the 197O’s but it is until recently, due to the simplicity of the procedure and its predictability that it has become the standard of care in Dentistry. “As more and more people are becoming aware of the advantages of dental implants, more people are getting them done, with more success stories”. It is unfortunate that a lot of patients have unwarranted fears about dentistry. Dental implants can really improve the person’s quality of life. Patient, Zoraida S. says, “ I broke a back tooth which had to extracted and an implant had to be placed. During the period of the process, I would arrive at the office very nervous but soon with the help of Dr. Sperling and his staff, I was more relaxed. This implant is my best Tooth! I’m grateful for the expertize and gentle care I received at the Dental care Center of Hollywood.” For more information on Dental Implants, call 954-989-5500 or visit www.dentalcenterofhollywood.com

DOWNTOWN BUSINESS

Downtown Hollywood’s Honey Cat Vintage recognized as “Must See” Shop By Caron Conway | Lead Correspondent Honey Cat Vintage, a boutique offering unique vintage apparel and accessories in Downtown Hollywood, has been recognized as one of Broward County’s “Must See” shopping spots by BUST Magazine, a national publication that presents a female perspective on pop culture. “I was definitely excited and astonished,” said Honey Cat Vintage owner Dania Santana, whose charming shop is featured in the February/March issue of BUST. “It just made me feel that I’m doing something that’s starting to bear fruit.” Santana said she’s received a “warm and positive” reception from the public as well since opening Honey Cat Vintage at 1896 Polk St. in November 2012. “I get a lot of repeat customers. Everybody seems to like the shop,” she said. “It’s been a really good experience thus far.” Santana hand-picks her timeless, one-of-a-kind vintage pieces with a keen eye to quality, design and glamour. The boutique’s selection includes women’s garments, purses, belts, hats, shoes and jewelry, as a well as some furniture and home goods. Santana enjoys sharing her love of vintage apparel and accessories, selecting exquisite pieces for her boutique that exude timelessness and style and cannot be found in other stores. “I absolutely value the way women in past eras would always look their best, even when their world was falling apart and/or the country was at war. I really admire that,” she said. “And through Honey Cat Vintage, I’m giving these pieces a new life. People are able to enjoy them again.” Santana said her boutique has found its ideal home in the historic downtown arts, music and entertainment district, with its “homey feel,” interesting architecture, and abundance of music and art offerings at the nearby ArtsPark at Young Circle and throughout the district. “There is so much happening in Downtown Hollywood, and I’m happy to be a part of it,” said Santana, who also lives in the downtown district. “Everybody here is so willing to

Hollywood is developing a reputation as a place where television shows and movies are made. It offers many beautiful locations, hotels, local crews, vendors and one stop permitting. When portions of films are shot in Hollywood, there is a positive economic impact as many are able to gain employment in the film industry. “When filming is done here, it gets the name of Hollywood out there and exposes people to the City,” said Joann Hussey, spokesperson for Hollywood. Recently, a film starring James Belushi, Virginia Madsen, and Gloria Estefan was shooting in Hollywood. The working title of the film is called “A Change of Heart.” Belushi plays a grumpy curmudgeon who needs a heart transplant. Once he receives the heart transplant, his life changes in unexpected ways. This film is still in production. TNT Network selected Hollywood as the location to shoot an unscripted series “Wake U Call” with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. “Wake Up Call” features Johnson lending a helping hand to everyday people who are facing enormous challenge in their lives. Residents are encouraged to look for an appearance by Hollywood Fire Rescue & Beach Safety Lieutenant Diana Deabreu. FX Network shot their television pilot “Hoke” in the Park East neighborhood of Hollywood. “Hoke” is a dark comedy-drama starring Paul Giamatti, and is based on former Miami Herald book reviewer Charles Willeford’s series of novels. If the series is picked up it will feature Giamatti as a homicide detective in what is being described as “pre-chic Miami” in 1985.

Hollywood Residents start community Garden BY DAVID VOLZ CORRESPONDENT

dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com

A group of residents have come together and developed the Highland Gardens Neighborhood Community Garden. They are growing vegetables on property located on the 2300 block of Adams Street between Dixie Highway and 24th Avenue on land owned by the City of Hollywood. The Garden takes up roughly one quarter acre of a 6.8 acre City owned parcel of land. The City of Hollywood is allowing people to garden there on a temporary basis. Members of the Garden movement, now more than 120 people would like to expand the Garden because it is almost full. The City of Hollywood is hoping that the property where the garden is now located can be developed as a residential area. The group also wants to create a garden in the Washington Park, Liberia and Hollywood Gardens West neighborhoods. Currently the City of Hollywood is writing a citywide garden policy. Until this policy is in place, no new community gardens or expansion of current gardens can take place. “The City is interested in having more gardens, it is just that at this time we want to have a policy in place before we move forward,” said Joann Hussey, spokesperson for Hollywood. The City of Hollywood does pay the water bill for the property and the public works department has provided mulch. Currently the Department of Community and Economic Development for Hollywood is in the process writing a citywide garden policy that would cover the locations, maintenance, appearance and the size of gardens. It will cover items such as signs, how plans will be delineated and overall rules and regulations for gardens. Maria Jackson, the manager of the Garden is pleased with how it is progressing. “I would like to see continued support until a developer breaks ground. We have an agreement with the city that it will be allowed. Then the local gardeners will be able to move to a more permanent garden. We hope the City will consider a developer who will want green space in the development which would allow for continued gardening,” said Jackson. A wide variety of vegetables are grown including sweet potatoes, papaya, pineapples, tomatoes, okra, yucca, bananas, plantains, parsley, egg plants, beans, cucumbers, onions, squash and other vegetables.

This garden benefits Hollywood residents in a number of ways. It gives them a recreational activity, an opportunity to learn how other people are growing plants and gives them an opportunity to grow their own vegetables. “This garden brings a network of people together who have a common interest in growing healthy foods and share what they grow. When you belong to the garden you are connected to other people who have a similar interest,” said Jackson. And it creates a general sense of community. Many individuals involved enjoy working together including local Izunome Association church members. “People who are coming and going to the garden see what else is taking place in the neighborhood and may help stop negative activities such as drug dealing or dumping garbage,” said Jackson. Romilson Candido, a minister of Izunome said about 40 people from his congregation are involved in the garden. “Our purpose is to encourage all our members and people from the community to do home gardening. People go to this garden, learn and become inspired. Many people have never done gardening. They learn how to use dirt and dried leaves and lots of love to grow crops. This is the growing technique that was taught to us by our master Mokithi Okada,” said Candido. Vice Mayor Patricia Asseff said she is favor of the community garden. “I love the garden and I think they could be more successful and really make it a nice community garden. They will have to apply for grant money. Maybe they could get an operator who knows how to farm. I would like to see them get established properly,” said Asseff. The Hollywood Gardens West Civic Association is in the beginning stages of starting their own garden. “This would be another way to bring the community together to be empowered and solve local problems together. It is going beatify our neighborhood. It is consistent with a sustainable future,” said the association’s president Idelma Quintana. For additional information about the Highland Gardens Community Garden initiative, call Maria Jackson at 786-357-2197.

“I would like to see a community garden in the Liberia neighborhood. It would allow residents to grow and harvest their own crops which would allow them to save more money than if they go to the grocery stores.”

-Henry Grahm, Director of Liberia Economic and Social Development, Inc.

“ We would like to see a community garden in each of the six Hollywood districts. Community gardens help people understand

where their food is coming from, gets people outdoors and helps them gain an appreciation of the environment. It provides an opportunity for the older generation to share their knowledge with the younger people coming up. In addition to finding land for the gardens, we need to find more people like Maria Jackson who have a passion for community gardens and can serve as the advocate for each of these district community gardens”

Gallery 2014 celebrates one year of bringing light and art to Harrison Street

By Daniela Roeder | Business Correspondent

Gallery 2014 is celebrating one year of bringing light and art to Harrison Street on March 29th. Hollywood native and life long resident, Elizabeth Sanjuan, knew that her passion for the arts would eventually benefit the Hollywood community. Over the years Elizabeth nurtured her passion for photography alongside her banker-turned-artist husband, Ken Brown. Their passion sparked the idea of opening a little studio to display their own art. However, during a year-long assignment in Hong Kong in 2012, the couple found their interest in art and in the art gallery business getting stronger, and they resolved to open a real gallery when they returned to Hollywood. The search for this gallery began, leading to their current location on Harrison Street. With a much larger location than they originally had in mind, the couple returned in 2013 to the challenge of getting the 5,000 square foot “Gallery 2014” ready for its opening by the end of March 2013. By opening day, Gallery 2014 had a full retinue of 15 artists, an inventory of over 100 works of art, and a mission dedicated to bringing affordable art and opportunity to the greater Hollywood community. “We are dedicated to emerging artists who have limited exposure” explains Ken Brown, “we want to help the local artist, whether they are young or old, immigrants or long time resi-

dents”. Gallery 2014 displays all styles of art, including sculptures and paintings, providing art that is affordable and of good quality. While it isn’t possible to represent every deserving artist, Elizabeth and Ken have tried to accommodate as many artists as they possibly can, since they understand the importance of exposure and gallery representation to new artists. Not only do they help their artists by displaying their art, but they also try to teach them how to be successful as “artist business people” while not letting go of their artistic passion.

Gallery 2014 also takes an active role in educating the community in art appreciation. Last year, the gallery participated in International World Peace Day and Slow Art Day with special events. “Slow Art Day” will be celebrated again this year on April 12th, where the public will be invited to take the time to really examine and understand pieces of artwork on display in the gallery, and to join in a group discussion of their impressions over lunch. Gallery 2014 also looks forward to providing opportunities for student artists in

the future. In cooperation with local museums and art teachers, Gallery 2014 hopes to sponsor twice-yearly student exhibitions to provide young artists with an opportunity to sell their work in a gallery setting. The gallery has already been working with local programs to offer internship and “art as business” educational opportunities to students. Last year, Gallery 2014 granted $20,000 in art education scholarships to students in South Florida to attend programs at the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood and the Museum of Art Ft. Lauderdale. Elizabeth and Ken are great believers in the value of art education as a part of student development.. Both of them know how important it is to keep the dreams of young artists alive. In addition to their dedication to student art education through Gallery 2014, Elizabeth also shares her expertise by being a member of the Downtown Hollywood Mural Committee and the Expo Alfresco Art Committee. Ken has been a long-time board member of the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood and the Museum of Art Ft. Lauderdale. Gallery 2014 is located at 2014 Harrison Street in Downtown Hollywood. Hours are by appointment or open Tuesdays through Fridays from 2-7 p.m., Saturdays from 2-8:30p.m., and closed Sundays and Mondays. For more information, visit www.gallery2014.com or call 954-505-3291.

Student Artwork to Adorn Solar Powered Trash Compactors Fautz Associates Donates New Eco-Friendly Units to Hollywood Schools In keeping with its commitment to improve and beautify the local community it serves, South Florida real estate development firm Fautz Associates donated new solar powered trash compactors to two Hollywood, Florida schools. Fautz Associates united with Attucks Middle School and Bethune Elementary and sponsored an ecofriendly art contest to help students gain a better understanding of the importance of recycling, advantages of harnessing renewable energy and maintaining a “green” campus. A variety of drawings from students at both schools were selected and will be enlarged, then permanently wrapped around the exterior of each BigBelly, a combination solarintelligent trash compactor and recycling station. “Enhancing the quality of life within the community where we live and work is our core philosophy. The goals for this project are to promote artistic achievement, encourage lifelong environmental conservation practices and inspire students to take personal responsibility by instilling a sense of pride,” said Robert Fautz, CEO, Fautz Associates. The BigBelly not only collects waste and recyclable products, it also leverages the power of renewable solar energy and utilizes information technology. High-tech SmartBelly components allow users to access real-time data

from any computer or smartphone and monitor capacity levels. Each school will be empowered with knowledge to manage just-in-time collection, saving manpower and fuel, while ensuring there are no overflow issues. The double wide, 50 gallon units are 5 feet high by 2.65 feet wide and retail for $4,240 each. “Our students are participating in Broward County’s Conservation and Climate Change Challenge so this was a perfect opportunity to showcase their talented creations,” said Nicole Kasuboske, Science Coach, Attucks Middle School. “We are grateful to Fautz Associates for their generous donation which allows us to display our students’ artwork, while teaching valuable lessons about conservation.”

NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS

‘Great Neighborhoods Challenge’ will improve Hollywood one block at a time By David Volz The Hollywood Great Neighborhoods Challenge II begins on April 1 and runs until July 31. Starting on April 1, property owners can submit an entry form with a photo showing the property in its current condition prior to improvements. Then they have 120 days to make improvements to their home or business property. After submitting a photo, the property owners can get to work and make those improvements. The improvements must be visible from the public right of way. They can paint, pressure wash, improve landscaping and lighting. They can repair their driveway, fix sidewalks, paint their front door, remove chain link fencing, remove invasive trees and remove junk. Also, they can install windows, fix the roof and install or repair awnings. “The Great Neighborhoods Challenge II is a collaborative effort between the City of Hollywood, residents and business owners with an interest in working together to make all Hollywood neighborhoods better,” said Joann Hussey, spokesperson for Hollywood. “The last time the Challenge took place more than 250 properties participated and it spurred dramatic and positive change in Hollywood. The City wants to get more people involved to make a bigger difference.” The last Great Neighborhood Challenge started in 2011 and ended in 2012 and was considered a positive program. The winner for the North Central neighborhood was Robert and Kristy Crawford. They performed extensive work on their property including pressure cleaning the sidewalk and driveway, creating a new private walkway, repainting the door, placing potted plants at the front door, installing a new decorative door and garage, painting the driveway, replacing the mailbox, pruning hedges, repainting the exterior, repairing fascia and trim, installing new windows, creating new plant beds, mulching the yard and other improvements. “This is great. It encourages people to fix up their homes. We were happy to win first place,” said Kristy Crawford. This time there will be 17 Civic and Neighborhood Associations participating. There will also be

a category of businesses and the city-wide at large category for neighborhoods with fewer than 25 properties participating. If a neighborhood has fewer than 25 participants those property owners are part of the at large category. There will be a first, second and third place winner in each neighborhood. There will also be honorable mention. Each first place winner will receive $2,500, second place, $1,000 and third place, $500. The honorable mention winners will receive a $100 gift card. There will be up to five honorable mentions in each neighborhood. The top three neighborhoods will win a $25,000 Neighborhood Improvement Grant. Public space winners will meet with city architects to go over the design for improvements that members of the neighborhood want. This could include new benches, sidewalk or new cabanas. It will be a $25,000 project. On May 3, the City of Hollywood will hold a Great Neighborhoods Challenge II a design event and plant sale. That is 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at David Park Community Center at 108 North 33rd Court. Residents will be able to purchase plants for discounted prices. There will be architects and landscape designers and authorities in the field of home improvement. The same activity will take place on June 7 at the David Park Community Center, according to Hussey. Jean Morford, president of the Lawn Acres Civic Association served as the chairperson of the 2012 Great Neighborhoods Challenge for Lawn Acres. “I feel that the Challenge serves as a stimulus for people to activate their curb appeal plans,” she said. “There is now a reason to get on with a project which has been waiting on the drawing board. It is fun to compete for a cash prize. Neighbors were encouraged to help each other and collaborate when possible. We had a group of volunteers, which included children, who spruced up the exterior of an elderly couple’s house so that they could be a part of the Great Neighborhoods Challenge. The Challenge promotes the “spirit of community” throughout the City of Hollywood,” said Morford. For people who want to enter the contest, go to www.hollywoodfl.org/ gncII.
