They are as follows: CT: “In around 1920, Joseph Young began buying up land in South Florida.” -To be quite specific, JWY first went to S. Fla., that is, Miami, January 2, 1920. At that time he bought “five plats of land in the Allapattah section..” (Lukach bio, p. 43). Sales of these acres were strictly to furnish funds toward his goal, land for his dream city. At the very end of 1920 he purchased a square mile of land from Stephen Alsobrook, a Dania farmer. This purchase was noted in the Jan. 14, 1921 Fort Lauderdale Sentinel (Lukach bio. P. 47-48) CT: “The area was described as a low-lying prairie, with a salt water marsh border and a thin strip of beachfront along a barrier island to the east.” - This land was “pine and palmetto” and lay on the west and east sides of Flagler’s railroad bed on the coastal ridge, the highest ground in the area. Young’s purchase of the beach island was a separate purchase. CT: “The only inhabitants in the area at that time were a few Danish farmers…” -Dania became an incorporated city in 1904, occupied by quite successful farmers, who were not from Denmark, but were Americans of Danish extraction from the Chicago area. CT: “…known at Hollandale after Luther Holland, a Swedish immigrant who was farming this area now known as Hallandale…” -Luther Halland was anything but an immigrant farmer! He was the brother-in-law of James Ingraham, an associate of Henry Flagler. Flagler needed people to use his railroad between Palm Beach and Miami, so he established towns along it, including Deerfield, Pompano, Dania, and Hallandale. (JM blog March 24, 2014) What Halland did was to send notices, in Swedish, to Swedish cities telling of farming opportunities in this newly settled area. Some Swedes did arrive, and did farm in the city they called Hallandale (I went to school with their children).

JANUARY 2020
Happy New Year from all of us at the Hollywood Gazette! As we enter the new year, we’re filled with mixed emotions at the world around us, and at our little city as well. Lots of new businesses are opening up here, property values are up as well, yet we continue in our constant struggle to maintain both our growth and our small-town, homegrown feeling. Well, wait till you read Dr. Joan Mickelson’s article about the Hollywood that she grew up in! Dr. Mickelson, whose parents both worked directly for Joseph Young, really was home-grown, and knew this town when it really was a small town. We’re thrilled to have her contribution to the paper, and we’re sure you’ll love her take on what it was like way back when.* We had a great Scavenger Hunt in December — when you see the pix inside on page 23, you may be sorry if you missed it!
Of course, we have our usual roundup of community news -- including a wonderful story of an older student, who persevered beyond expectations to graduate from Broward College -- city and county goings-on, and some post-holiday wrap-ups. And now, we hope you all join us as we sail with a clean slate into the new year ahead. Wishing you all a happy and healthy, and newsworthy, 2020! *By the way, Dr. Mickelson really did write the book on it! Contact the Hollywood Historical Society to purchase your copy of Joseph W. Young, Jr., and the City Beautiful: A Biography of the Founder of Hollywood, Florida, by Joan Mickelson, PhD.

In 2017, Borges went back to work as an assistant manager at a local retail store, where he met Kelly Edwards, VP at the Hollywood Jaycees/JCI Hollywood, who eventually became his significant other, and encouraged him to begin volunteering again, and to enroll in Broward College. On Dec. 11, 2019, Borges joined thousands of other Broward College graduates at the Hard Rock Hollywood when he celebrated completing his Associates degree, as a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, the international honor society of two-year colleges and academic programs. For the next step to fulfilling his dream of working in the medical field, he has been accepted to the A.S. Nursing program at Broward College. Meanwhile, he continues to volunteer with the Jaycees in various local projects, and we at Hollywood Gazette are sure that everyone reading this tribute will join us in wishing Partick Borges all the luck in the world in fulfilling his dreams, and hoping that he’ll be back to share his successes here with us in his adopted hometown of Florida’s Hollywood. few seconds with Dr. Anna Ferrera and you realize that you’re in the presence of a veterinarian who is far from ordinary. Dr. Ferrera began her career in Cuba, where she and her husband both were vets. They’re highly trained with extensive experience in surgery, clinical laboratory work, hematology, bone marrow studies, endocrinology, metabolic diseases and microbiology. Yet, their overall success has come from treating pets as holistically as possible. Thorough communication, compassionate care and individualized medicine are at the heart of their work. First, they turn to nutrition, physical therapy, natural medicines, and work closely with you, the owner, before using drugs or more invasive procedures to cure whatever ails your best friend. And it’s working. “I want to say that 95, maybe even 98 per cent of the time we have been successful,” reported Dr. Ferrera. “Often, people come to us for a second opinion, and tell us

Arthur Street Book Nook Unleashes the Magic of Reading in Hollywood Hills
BY JENNIFER ANN LOVE
H
ollywood Hills resident Samantha Wallet's entire life has been enriched by librarians and the avid readers in her family. So when her husband Richard read about the Little Free Library Challenge in Hollywood Gazette last year, he decided it would be the perfect Christmas gift for her. Little Free Libraries are small, frontyard book exchanges found in nearly a hundred thousand locations around the world in 85 countries —from Iceland to Tasmania to Pakistan. And recently you may have noticed more of them sprouting up in neighborhoods throughout Hollywood. "We always lived outside of town when I was a kid, so when the local library's bookmobile would come by it was like Christmas and summer vacation all rolled into one," recalled Wallet. "I have always loved to read, and without that mobile library, my world view would have been much, much, smaller. Those librarians were like superheroes
to me." To assist with the installation, the Wallet family called Chris from Handyman Extraordinaire. When he heard about what the job entailed, he immediately said he would be thrilled to do it for free, "just to be a cool community-helping guy," recalled Wallet. That would be the first of many heartwarming experiences the 'Arthur Steet Book Nook' has created already. The Wallet residence is about 50 steps or so from Memorial Hospital and Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital which she hopes will draw people to the library. "Plus I know a few of my neighbors have issues with mobility, so I thought, wouldn't it be nice to have somewhere in walking distance to
"My boys loved choosing a book to unwrap," shared neighbor Nicole Marie. "They haven’t put them down!"
Samantha was excited when the first book was donated by a patron on Nov. 27. "Thank you kind person, please come again," she shared on her Facebook page for the Arthur Street Book Nook.
The new Little Free Library (Charter #71182) installed in December 2019 outside of the Hollywood Police Athletic League.

just get a breath of fresh air and perhaps find a new favorite author?" Feedback from their neighbors confirms she was right. "I've spoken to several neighbors and they're very much enjoying to convenience of stopping by on their daily dog/ kid walks. I've caught a few kids running up to it, super excited abut finding a book. It made my day. Week. Month. Year." Hollywood Hils resident Nicole Marie noticed the new library before the holidays with her kids. "I loved the addition of the hook to put your dog leash on! They very sweetly had wrapped books for
the holidays," she said. The Arthur Street Book Nook has officially registered at LittleFreeLibrary. org (charter number 94790) and even has it's own Facebook page to announce new arrivals. "The library is open to everyone and is completely free for its’ patrons in every possible way. No fees, no due dates, just books, books, and more books," said Wallet. "Some people don't have books to leave. That's ok. There are others who donate more than one. It all works out." For more information, visit https:// littlefreelibrary.org.
Boulevard Heights resident Judy Bates had been planning to build a Little Free Library before she read about the Hollywood Gazette challenge. She then transformed an old cabinet into a beautiful library, with a motion-sensor light for the evening readers. She added a bench along side the library and has a Turquoise picnic table with steps leading from it to the library. Her neighbors think it's a great idea.
The Little Free Library at T.Y. Park, designed by local builder Jeff Gayhart, was dedicated to Margie Grimes, the late senior manager of the park by the Friends of TY Park. People from all walks of life, young and old, love to bring a book and take a book and even the Stirling Road branch of the Broward County Public Library donates books to the library. "This little library has built camaraderie and excitement about reading in the community," said Barry Alan Wilen, Esq. "It has been a labor of love for the Friends of TY Park Board members to clean and dust the library housing and to tidy up the books inside on a regular basis."

5 Ways Hollywood is Addressing Sea Level Rise Concerns BY DAVID VOLZ The City of Hollywood and community leaders are concerned about tidal flooding because of conditions during the fall and recent higher than normal King Tides. This is not just a Hollywood issue; it affects coastal communities throughout the nation and the world. Locally, Broward County and the City of Hollywood are working on this issue, according to Joann Hussey, spokesperson for the City of Hollywood. The City of Hollywood, CRA, Broward County, and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) met recently to discuss “ponding” on the barrier island. These are some ongoing projects currently underway to address this issue in Hollywood: 1. The FDOT is initiating a drainage study for the barrier island and the City has requested that the FDOT consider installing pump stations. 2. The FDOT will complete the installation of tidal valves north of Harrison Street by February/March 2020. 3. The City will provide five check valves to FDOT in January 2020. These valves are located south of Harrison Street and will be installed by FDOT before the next tidal season in April 2020. 4. Broward County is working on a seawall height ordinance. It is expected to be completed in early 2020.
All municipalities will be required to adopt this ordinance within two years of its approval by the County. 5. The City of Hollywood will complete a resiliency study in January 2020 that will be presented to the Commission in a workshop in early 2020. The City of Hollywood is also completing inspections of all tidal valves owned by the City of Hollywood in preparation of the next tidal season. Hollywood will be working with the Broward MPO and other agencies to identify the additional funding that will be required for Sea Level Rise related impacts.

Shabo’s Mediterranean Barbecue Expands in Downtown Hollywood BY CARON CONWAY
Shabo’s Mediterranean Barbecue, a popular Downtown Hollywood restaurant that combines authentic Mediterranean and Middle Eastern recipes and spices with American barbecue classics, recently relocated a few doors east to 1814 Harrison St. At nearly double the size of the previous location, the new space now offers full bar service, in addition to an outdoor hookah bar. Chef-owner Shabo Emara continues to offer his unique fusion American and Mediterranean barbecue concept and wide variety of delicious, healthy dishes that have made Shabo’s a big hit with diners who come from as far away as Boca Raton and Homestead. “I decided to make my menu for everyone. And everyone loves it,” Emara said. “We have a good reputation – and all word of mouth, no advertising.” After graduating from Cairo Hilton Culinary School in his native Egypt, Emara quickly rose through the kitchen’s ranks, first at the former Hilton Nile and then the Cairo Marriott Hotel, where he mastered classic American country cooking at Roy’s Country Kitchen. In 2009, Emara immigrated to the U.S. to attend the American Hospitality Academy in Naples. Shabo’s features the authentic flavors of Middle Eastern fare through classic Moroccan, Egyptian and Lebanese recipes, along with grilled kebabs (Mediterranean barbecue) and traditional American country barbecue. Everything is prepared from scratch
using the freshest ingredients from local markets, and all meats are Halal certified. There are numerous vegetarian and vegan options, and anything on the menu can be prepared gluten-free upon request. The extensive menu features brunch items such as Avocado Eggs Benedict ($13.95), Egyptian Egga ($8.95) and Moroccan Shakshuka ($14.95); daily lunch specials (11 am to 5 pm) including burgers, pitas, wraps, quesadillas and “American classics” like Philly Cheese Steak ($7.95 to $14.95); and a vast selection of Mediterranean dips, snacks and sides, add-ons, soups and salads. Main courses from the grill (starting at $18.95) include kebabs, fish, rib eyes and filet mignon. Among the 20 signature dishes are couscous, tajine, molokhia, makluba, shakshuka, and BBQ beef ribs, chicken or a lamb platter ($14.95 to $22.95). There are also shawarma, gyro and falafel platters ($18.95 to $19.95), and the Chef’s Dinner that includes a beverage, house wine or beer, a choice of appetizer and
Recycle Your Christmas Tree at T.Y. Park until Jan. 20 When the holidays are long gone but your tree isn’t, it’s time to recycle your used evergreen to Broward County’s annual Chip-a-Tree initiative. Last year Broward County Parks recycled nearly 4,000 trees, which probably would otherwise have gone to landfills. The free program requires Broward County residents to remove all decorations from their holiday trees (no decorated trees will be accepted), then bring the tree to T.Y. Park or any of the 13 participat-
ing parks in Broward – where they will be chipped and used for landscaping throughout the County park system. There is a limit of two trees per vehicle, artificial trees are not accepted, and no commercial vehicles or garbage trucks are allowed. This season’s program runs daily through Monday, January 20. The regular weekend and holiday gate entrance fee will NOT be in effect for recyclers. Hours are Mon. -Sun. 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.

A classic mimosa special is available until 4 pm daily, and select cocktails, wines and beers are buy one, get one free during happy hours, from 3 to 6 pm daily and 10 pm to closing on Friday and Saturday. Emara, who has lived in Hollywood for six years, said he chose to open his own business in the historic downtown
arts, music and entertainment district largely because of its ideal location. “Downtown Hollywood is very close to the airport, the beach, Fort Lauderdale and Miami,” Emara said. “Plus, our city is so beautiful. I love Hollywood. It’s home.” Shabo’s Mediterranean Barbecue opens daily at 11 am and closes at midnight Sunday – Thursday and 2 am Friday and Saturday. For reservations, call 954-367-2991. The exhibition explores how failed relationships are beautiful, complicated, and an important part of learning in the process of finding successful partnerships. Hollywood by-the-sea, Joseph W. Young’s Planned city beautiful, will Soon be 100 years Old Some vignettes from the earliest yearS BY JOAN MICKELSON, PHD
w
e south Floridians are often accused of having no history, at least between Ponce de Leon and today. But when does “history” begin? Surely anything a century old may be considered historic, and therefore I’m pleased to tell you that 2020 marks the birth year of Hollywood Bythe-Sea, Florida. After the population rose to over 20,000 in 1925, founder Joseph W. Young had Hollywood incorporated. But Hollywood actually began to exist in 1920, when Young sent the first men to clear the initial site and lay in Hollywood Boulevard. Here are some vignettes about the city’s beginnings, to suggest its astonishing rise from empty land in 1920 to a “Planned Paradise” or Garden City in less than five years. Future Hollywood began in an unincorporated part of Dania, a thriving community of Danish-Americans who farmed the fertile land along Flagler’s Florida East Coast Railway. Seeking a site where he could create a seaside city, Joseph W. Young, Jr., a Californian then living in Indianapolis, came to south Florida in January, 1920, by train to Miami. Perhaps he spotted the small town of sturdy frame homes and healthy farmland from his train window, for he soon hired a car to drive him north up the new Dixie Highway to Dania.

Hollywood Boulevard begins. Working east from the Dixie Highway. Author’s collection. There, he apparently met with the mayor, Martin Frost, and was guided through the nearby uncultivated flat acres of palmetto and jack pines which he would soon buy. The seller, Stephen Alsobrook, with more acreage than he could farm, was surely delighted to receive $71 per acre for 1,700 acres straddling Flagler’s railroad and the Dixie Highway. J.W. Young had no intention of farming. From the start, his plan was to create a city that welcomed everyone, from the “opulent” to the most humble. Throughout 1920, Young, wearing high-laced boots to fend off rattlers, scorpions, and chiggers, tromped all over his land and chose the site to begin an east-west “boulevard.” This was the spine of Young’s design, a wide roadway interspersed with ornamental park-like circles that led from the oceanfront to the edge of the Everglades.
Hollywood/Park View Hotel, built 1922. West façade overlooking Circle Park. Designed by Rubush & Hunter in Young’s chosen Mission Revival style. Courtesy Hollywood Historical Society. Once it was completed, there would be a grand hotel at either end, imposing monuments drawing motorists to explore the city from end to end. It was 1925 before that could happen. Meanwhile, the first residents of Hollywood were those creating it, the engineers, salesmen, and laborers. Some commuted by bus from Miami or bunked in temporary dorms, frame structures that were torn down once an area was cleared and streets laid out. My father, Tony Mickelson, head of the surveying parties, first stayed at Mrs. Bloom’s Hotel in Dania, a comfortable two-story frame structure where meals

Hollywood Marimba Orchestra were included. Then, like others on Young’s staff, in 1922 he bought himself two half-acre lots on the high ground in the Little Ranches, the section that lay between the Dixie Highway and 28th Avenue, intersected by Hollywood Boulevard. Here he erected a frame cottage, and when he was joined by five other engineers they hired a woman to cook for them. In those days of make-your-own entertainment, this soon became a party house with musical members playing banjos and ukuleles, and all singing along. The first permanent homes were also built in 1922, in today’s Parkside. And where did the boss live as his land was being cleared and streets put in? In 1920-21, Young was back and forth by train from Indianapolis to Miami, so he bought the Granada Apartments on the Miami River, and also a large houseboat that he could bring up the Inland Waterway (now Intracoastal), stay overnight and entertain prospects. For as soon as he began advertising

Hollywood, the crowds came flocking in to become a part of this new city. Young realized the immediate need for a central hotel where prospects could stay as they made their decisions. Perhaps the key hotel to Young’s future success was his first, initially called the Hollywood Hotel, designed in his signature Mission Revival style and opened in 1922 on the east side of what is the present day Young Circle. Imagine the impression this expansive three-story structure made to drivers on the bumpy Dixie Highway or passengers on Flagler’s trains to Miami.

Out of vast miles of flat, empty land with occasional tiny houses rose a golden dome and taller tower, colored awnings at every window, with lights circling the tower at night. This unexpected palace successfully drew visitors down the broad boulevard to see what this vision was all about. They weren’t disappointed. Young’s hotel was the height of 1920s resort comfort, with a marimba band adding entertainment. Once the Circle in front of the hotel was landscaped, the name was changed to Park View Hotel. Very shortly, Young, with his wife Jessie and their sons, moved into the south wing, second floor, until their home was completed. The hotel remained on its own island, visible in aerial photos of Young Circle for decades. Eventually the name was changed to the Town House, and a swimming pool was added, with cabanas that could be rented by locals. Nothing like going for a swim in downtown Hollywood! Regrettably, a new owner decided to demolish the hotel in the 1960s and replace it with shops of uninspired architectural design. With those
