Happy Spring! March is certainly doing its “in like a lion” thing this year in Hollywood, but somehow I think that “out like a lamb” is sort of doubtful. And I’m not just talking about the weather. There is just so much going on here these days! We have, as always, our ongoing coverage of school, city and county news, thanks to our intrepid reporter David Volz. We’ve got info on some very fun upcoming events (hint: food at the park and sports at the beach are involved!) and stories about some great accomplishments of our fellow Hollywood residents. We visited Zero Empty Spaces, a wonderful storefront art gallery and workspace concept bringing more art and more artists to our historic downtown. For our history column this month, I myself had the honor of interviewing members of the first few Leadership Hollywood classes -including LH One! -- and the people who originally created the program, 44 years

ago. On a sad note, speaking of our historic downtown, many people are mourning the demolition of the Great Southern Hotel, which stood for years on Hollywood Boulevard at the southwest corner of Young Circle. Is this the beginning of the end of our downtown’s historic designation? We will continue to follow the saga, along with that of the Sunset Golf Course, in this and future issues. Like any growing city, Hollywood has its ups and downs. Either way, lion or lamb, happy or sad, in season only or all year round, Hollywood is our home -- and we continue our love affair with it. We hope you are enjoying the beautiful spring weather, and we hope you also enjoy the issue.

Hollywood Residents Mourn Loss of Great Southern Hotel City: level of deterioration necessitated immediate attention to address safety hazard BY DAVID VOLZ A number of Hollywood community leaders were angry and disappointed that the Great Southern Hotel was demolished with little public notice. A group came together at the bust of Joseph Young at Young Circle to hold a memorial service in honor the hotel that was an important attraction during the early years of Hollywood. The city was notified in late January by construction crews and on-site engineers who were concerned with the structural integrity of the building. On February 11, the city’s Building Division stated that, “Due to the determination that the historic north and west facades of the former hotel were unsafe and posed a significant threat to public safety, a modification of the existing demolition permit was issued this morning and demolition of the unsafe structure was completed earlier this afternoon.” “I am heartbroken that the hotel was demolished. We tried to save it. It sat there for about 100 years. It was a beautiful building,” said Karen Albertson, president of the Historical Society of Hollywood. According to the city’s website, the City consulted with an Engineering firm that inspected the building, interviewed on-site construction contractors, reviewed all prior

engineering reports and conducted strength testing of the building’s structural components. “The level of deterioration necessitated immediate attention to address a severe life safety hazard. The perimeter of the construction site was secured to allow for the demolition of the remaining structure.” Commissioner Peter Hernandez, came to the memorial service. “I knew the build-

town Parkside Royal Poinciana Civic Association and a community leader was very disappointed that Great Southern was torn down. She believes more effort should have been put into saving the structure. She wrote in a statement, “The loss of this landmark that represents a big part of our city’s history for whatever reason was so personal to me that it almost feels like an old friend has passed away. As I sat across the street and watched people drive or walk past, I saw their faces and were in as much disbelief as I was.” Also according to Smith, there was no public meeting, nor was the Hollywood Historic Society notified or consulted. “The DPRP Civic Association was not given any heads up so we could notify those of you who are residences of this community. It was a sneak attack in the middle of the day with a two hour permit being issue was carried out,” she said. “Who is to say it won’t happen TY IE C O against to all other historic S L ORICA OD HIST O W Y buildings in our downtown area, next up L L HO ing PHOTO: may the Suntrust Bank building built in was unsafe. The Early Days of Leadership Hollywood 44 Y EA R O F C R EAT I N G T H E C I T Y’S M OV E RS A N D S H A K E RS

orty-five years ago, in a room downtown, a few influential gentlemen were sitting around discussing the state of politics in downtown Hollywood. “I would have to say that the real credit for the formation of Leadership Hollywood goes to Bill Horvitz but there were four of us,” Bob Giacin said Bob Giacin, one of the four, and one of Hollywood’s earliest influencers. “We were actually the executive committee for the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. It was Bill Horvitz, Leonard Robbins, a local attorney, and David Rush, a local businessman, and myself. Horvitz, as you know, was very heavily involved in construction, and he felt that a lot of the people who were running for office in Hollywood, who would control his future, were just not prepared to run a city. Some of them were not even informed on how to read a balance sheet, understand a financial statement, anything of that nature. “And he was disturbed. He was often unjustly talked about, but he was always behind the scenes, looking for the betterment of Hollywood. His Hollywood Inc. development company had a lot of investment in Hollywood, and he cared about the city’s orderly growth and good government. “So he said, ‘let’s get better candidates out there, get them informed.’ And he put up the first $1000, to establish the Leadership Hollywood program.” And so out of that meeting, and that idea of educating people to run for city government, came the program that is today the longest running continuous Leadership program in the state of Florida, with more than 1000 graduates so far. And out of that program have come leaders of all kinds: judges, mayors, business owners, professionals, nonprofit board members and advocates, top executives in city and county government and beyond. Ask anyone who has participated in a Leadership program, here in Hollywood or in the many other cities and states that offer such initiatives, and they’ll most probably agree that it was one of the best investments of time and money they’ve ever made.

by Robin Kerr Drulard

“IT WAS A FOUR-YEAR EDUCATION PACKED INTO A YEAR,” SAID NICKI GROSSMAN, WHO WAS IN LEADERSHIP HOLLYWOOD ONE, AND WENT ON TO A LONG AND VARIED CAREER IN SERVICE TO BROWARD COUNTY. “IT GAVE ME THE OPPORTUNITY TO SEE WHAT I REALLY WANTED TO DO, AND THAT BEING A PART OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT IS HOW I WANTED TO SPEND MY LIFE.”

Nicki Grossman with her husband, Mel

The Leadership Hollywood program today is a nine-month program comprised of eight work days, each focused on a different aspect of running a city, from Health and Human Services to Tourism to Public Safety, plus several several sessions of personal growth and leadership training from highly-vetted professionals. In addition, each class performs four or five community service projects over the course of the nine months. The program culminates with a graduation gala in June, usually held in one of Hollywood’s leading hotels. The projects are designed to help members build character, improve their critical and creative thinking, practice interpersonal communication and problem solving and use their leadership skills

while they serve and better our community. Over the years, they have ranged from planting gardens and painting houses to putting on shows and pub crawls to beach events to recognition campaigns for nonprofits to golf tournaments to coalitionbuilding to city cleanups to TED talks and entrepreneurial competitions…and the list goes on. If it supports the city, Leadership Hollywood will consider supporting the project. In its 44 year history, Leadership Hollywood has completed nearly 200 community projects, according to Hollywood Chamber CEO Marie Suarez. “I credit (Hollywood Commissioner) Dick Blattner for creating the modern format of Leadership Hollywood,” said Broward County Circuit Court Judge Dan Casey, an early graduate who headed up the program from 1995 to 1998, when he left to become president of the Hollywood Chamber. “Dick came up with over half of things that we do now.” Blattner, who was in Leadership very early on — “I know it was in the single digits, Leadership Six or Seven!” he joked — recalled the fledgling days of the program. “I remember that in terms of process and procedure we would meet and get a lecture, usually from someone in the Chamber, but I wanted to get out into the streets and see what was going on,” recalled Blattner. “Well, I probably mouthed off about it, and the leader said ‘well, if you don’t like it, come up with something different’.” That was the beginning of the field trips and different outside speakers, instead of chamber staff acting as teachers. “We would go out and have judicial day, and spend time in courts, or go to a jail or visit a hospital to have a program, or sit in on a commission meeting or play the role of a commissioner.” The Community Projects soon followed, and have become one of the most meaningful pieces of the program. “The projects are one of the things I enjoyed the most,” said Blattner “In my first year, we planted mangroves in West Lake Park, to supplement nature. We destroyed our tennis shoes, waded through the muck, and then had a pizza party to decompress. (Broward County Judge) Ken Gottlieb spearheaded that project. We had a great time. We always had fun. “Hollywood was growing very rapidly, and the older ‘founder’ generation was retiring; some of the people needed to be replaced,” he recalled. “That was maybe why they decided to use the Chamber

as the vehicle to develop new leadership.” Blattner ran the program for several years until Casey took it over, and it has operated basically the same way Judge Ken Gottlieb ever since. Except, quipped Casey, in 1994, he changed the class names to Roman numerals, saying he thought it sounded more majestic. “Leadership Hollywood introduced the community to me, and me to the community,” said Casey. “Through this program, I got to know my city so much better – its beauty, its ugly, and its everything in between. Leadership Hollywood proselytizes proudly about the many great aspects of our community, but also pulls no punches about the challenges we face and the need to address them. “Leadership Hollywood takes people who merely live and work in Hollywood and enables them to become real citizens of and for Hollywood. It was a great experience, packed with info I would never have found anywhere else, and a network of people that I would never have met, in the city I had lived in for a very long time.” Judge Ken Gottlieb agrees. “I think it’s a wonderful program that gave me an opportunity to see more about the city than I ever did, and an opportunity to meet incredible and wonderful people who wanted to make Hollywood a better place to live and work,” he said. Gottlieb, who grew up in Hollywood, has been a judge since 2011, a member of the city commission from 1992 till 1998, and a state representative from ‘98 till 2006. He always knew he wanted to serve the public. “Leadership Hollywood gave me a great deal of knowledge, understanding and direction,” he declared. Indeed it does, said Bob Giacin, who actually helped build Hollywood when he later served as Chairman of the South Broward Park District and was instrumental in creating TY Park and CB Smith Park in Pembroke Pines. And, although Leadership Hollywood was formed originally to create new, qualified people to run the city, it also helped the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce figure out how best to

What You Need to Know About the U.S. Census

BY DAVID VOLZ

The City of Hollywood is encouraging residents to participate in the U.S. Census, a nationwide effort to count every person who lives in the U.S. and its territories. It happens every ten years and is mandated by the U.S. Constitution. More than $675 billion is distributed annually based on census counts. Census data informs local decisions about building community facilities, opening businesses and planning for future development and transportation infrastructure.

Data is used to redraw legislative districts and determine the number of seats Florida has in the U.S. House of Representatives. Florida has been undercounted substantially in the past two censuses with an estimated undercount of five to ten percent each decade. An undercount in the 2010 Census cost Broward County about $21.1 million per year, $211 million over the last decade. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, an estimated 14,600 residents were not counted.

What Questions Will I Be Asked? • The names of everyone in the household • Your phone number • If you own or rent • The number of people living or staying • Sex • Age and date of birth • Hispanic, Latino or Spanish Origin • Race • Relationship of each person in the household

Zero Empty Spaces Brings Affordable BY ROBIN KERR DRULARD

CARINA MASK PHOTOGRAPHY

Co-founders Evan Snow and Andrew Martineau with local resident artists.

A

rtists’ work and gallery space in downtown Hollywood for $2 a square foot? It’s an artist’s dream come true. And it has come to Hollywood Boulevard, thanks to Zero Empty Spaces (ZES), the brainchild of co-founders Evan Snow and Andrew Martineau. ZES was a spin-off of another Snow/Martineau collaboration, Choose954, a media and marketing platform aimed to cultivate community and culture in Broward. “We had determined that Broward needed some revitalizing to attract back the economic and cultural impact we’ve lost to Miami and Palm Beach,” Snow explained. So, the duo worked out a basic plan. The owner provides the space at no cost, Zero Empty Spaces brings it up to code if needed, turns on running water and electricity, makes it usable, and insures it. ZES funds the costs of setting up the spaces, sometimes doing the work themselves. They then lease it to local working artists on a month-to-month basis for $2 a square foot, a small fraction of what an artist would have to pay for individual studio space. Plus, there’s no long-term lease, they’re in a highly-visible location, and they’re surrounded by other artists. Martineau and Snow fell in love with Hollywood’s artsy vibe and strong sense of community last year, when Choose954 began leading a tour of the monthly Downtown ArtWalk, making it more interactive, and

12

marketing it through its own platform and database. “Through that relationship,” recalled Martineau, “we established relationships with artists, and also with property owners in the community. And there were two conversations that kept coming up, one from the artists: ‘Where are the affordable art studios?’ And another, from the property owners, developers and commercial real estate people, who said: ‘Hey, I want you to do some cool art stuff in my space!’ “Of course they don’t want to pay us to do that but that’s beside the point,” he smiled. The idea for Zero Empty Spaces was a natural outgrowth of those conversations, and the win/win nature of the idea quickly became apparent. Snow and Martineau have diverse business backgrounds, and Martineau was experienced in developing vacancy strategies for shopping malls, where short term leasing of empty spaces is common practice. “When you look at areas that have chronic vacancies, it doesn’t bode well for the tenants that are around the vacant spaces, for the people in the community,” he said. “Short term leases are what carry over the vacancies in the mall. So this is a very similar type of model. By filling the space you really benefit the tenants on either side. For the property owner, the benefit is now you have an active space. And for the entire area, when

MARCH 2020

you fill the space with multiple artists, you generate a lot of positive energy. You have all this personality and you have all their individual networks as well.” The model worked, and still does, in Wynwood, he said, and recalls New York in the 1970s, when famous artists such as Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat started the revitalization of such art meccas as Soho and Tribeca. “There’s a real tangible economic benefit to encouraging artists to be in your community,” Martineau continued. “One of the things that happens is that you start getting the collectors of some of these artists coming to visit the studio. And when you start infusing that kind of energy into a community, you start to build a real thriving artist culture, and that helps with the growth of a city. Because most cities are looking for more investment, and when you’re looking to get a corporation relocated into your area, which is what most Economic Development teams try to do, most companies want to go to areas that have a thriving creative class.” The first ZES opened on Las Olas Blvd, in July 2019, and the second, at 2021 Hollywood Blvd, followed in November. Through their databases and social channels including ZES quickly found the first five artists to fill the space. Over 100 had applied. “I was not connected with many other artists here in Hollywood,” shared local artist LuRu Rudawsky, owner of Tortuga Tile

Works, and one of the first to come on board. Rudawsky said that her business had outgrown the craft show circuit, and she had been working at home and out of the public eye for four years. “I was really starting to lose that connection with other artists,” she declared. “Coming in here and working with the other artists — it’s just a different environment, and it’s not in an industrial space, it’s on a thoroughfare. And having interested people come in — during the last ArtWalk, we were so busy, all night, we literally had to push people out the door at 11:15!” “Where else can you have some local culture purveyor bringing interested people into your space and giving you a platform and a microphone to talk?” interjected Snow. “ The last one we had almost 50 people!” “You actually have some of the most prolific artists in South Florida living in Hollywood,” noted Martineau. “And I would say not just your everyday artists, but really accomplished artists that have actually done major shows. That’s one of the reasons why we were so excited to be able to have this space.” The way-below-market rent, generally about $300 to $600 per month, includes utilities and liability insurance. All studios are accessible to artists 24/7, and the agreements require that the space be activated daily, with the artists rotating the schedule. Each artist also is given their own page on the ZES

At this time, the firm has four businesses and a non-profit, all self-funded and Broward-centric. Snow reports that they have received multiple inquiries asking about Zero Empty Spaces in other cities, but that for now, they’re concentrating on building Broward. “We’re really the only non-non-profit entity that’s actually doing this initiative, at least in Florida,” he believes. With these low rents and self-funded projects, how is this non-non-profit making a profit? “The answer,” said Martineau, “is that by doing this, essentially we have the biggest accumulation of affordable artist studio spaces in South Florida, and potentially in Florida. “And for us, it’s all about having more spaces. We’re big believers that a rising tide raises all ships, and if we can sustain this without losing money, and we keep building this, we’ll have this really robust creative community, and we’re all going to benefit later on, and so it’s more of that bigger picture kind of vision.” “It’s not something that we’re getting wealthy off of,” continued Snow, “but it’s more of that long vision of trying to build a community. As we start having more

and more artists working together, you are going to really start seeing things just start to spring up off of that. Even now, people are coming up with other ideas for other spaces for activating more of the Boulevard.” Martineau and Snow want everyone to know that throughout its infancy, no one has been more supportive of the concept of Zero Empty Spaces than the Hollywood CRA and the people of Hollywood. “It has been rewarding to see and experience the Hollywood community embrace the Zero Empty Spaces Downtown Hollywood location,” said Lisa Liotta, Redevelopment & Operations Manager for the City of Hollywood CRA. “Their opening and presence has further enhanced Downtown Hollywood’s ‘art-centric’ brand and provides yet another reason to visit and patronize Downtown Hollywood.” Know someone with a vacant commercial space? Hollywood Residents May See Change in Fee Collection for Solid Waste Services BY DAVID VOLZ During a recent meeting, the Hollywood Commission held a lengthy discussion about changing the method used for solid waste services fee collection. This change would apply only to those residents who now pay for this service on their utility bill. The fee would be billed annually as a non-ad valorem assessment on the property tax bill. This is being done to benefit residents and homeowners of the City in various ways. Prior to any changes the City will have to enter into agreements with the Broward County Property Appraiser and the Broward County Revenue Collector for assessment and collections. It will have to adopt the annual assessment methodology, set the rate for the assessment, hold a public hearing on

the non-ad valorem assessment and after the public hearing, authorize the assessment. Moving collections to the tax bill will improve collection rates and reduce collection costs, both of which will help provide sufficient resources to pay for solid waste services without increasing costs to other customers. Also, it will eliminate the current confusion of billing taxpayers versus renters. More significantly, since the assessments typically come at the beginning of the year, it should allow for portions of the revenue to be invested to earn interest. This earned interest will provide an additional resource to pay for a number of solid waste needs. Multiple approaches to distribute information about the change and its benefits will take place between now and a public hearing in September.

Hollywood Makes Final Push to Buy Ex-golf Course as Owner Plans for RV Park By Dan Christensen, FloridaBulldog.org SPECIAL TO THE GAZETTE

FEB. 19 UPDATE: The Hollywood City Commission Wednesday took a tentative step toward purchasing the former Sunset Golf Course for as much as $12 million. Commissioners voted 6-1 to ask staff to bring back for their review in 90 days a contract proposal that identifies all risks associated with purchasing the 45-3 acre parcel and indemnities from the seller, along with a new appraisal based on the current land use and zoning restrictions. Owner Richmond Italia lowered his asking price for the land by $2.5 million, to $12 million, in what he’s said was a final attempt to reach agreement. City officials said he told them he would not come down any further. The 90 day delay is to allow the city time to complete its due diligence and discovery any problems that need to be addressed. HOLLYWOOD’S HOPES of purchasing a former golf course for use as a nature preserve and public park could disappear with the property owner’s new plans to transform the 45.3-acre site into a campground and recreational vehicle park. The city has earmarked as much as $12 million from last year’s voter-approved general obligation bond to buy the former Sunset Golf Course owned by Richgreens, a limited partnership run by businessman Richmond Italia. But as negotiations have dragged on, Italia has applied for a permit to develop the RV park. Italia has offered to sell for $14.3 million. In an interview, he explained that number covers his total investment in the property, including carrying costs he’s absorbed since he bought it four years ago and a modest profit. The city recently countered with an offer of $9 million. With the two sides far apart, city officials including Assistant City Manager George Keller met with Italia and his lawyer

Thursday in a last ditch effort to make the sale happen before Italia proceeds with his plans for the RV park. He said the city gave him a letter “clarifying” that the property is zoned for such use. “It was a very cordial meeting,” Italia said. “They want to close the gap so they can put a final proposal to the city commission… But we didn’t get any closer. What they asked was for me to consider their offer over the weekend and come out with my absolute best price and it will presented at next week’s meeting for a yes or no vote.” RICHMOND ITALIA “Both sides agreed that if we don’t come to a deal we’re done. They’ll let me do my RV park.” Hollywood spokeswoman Raelin Storey said much the same, noting that the matter is set to be heard by the commission at next Wednesday’s meeting. Storey explained that the city and Italia have based their proposed sale prices on appraisals each has obtained. “Mr. Italia has suggested that he is willing to try and negotiate and end up somewhere in the middle,” she said. “If not, he’ll have to decide whether he can move forward by going through the process to do what is allowed by code.” AN ODYSSEY THROUGH THE SYSTEM Italia, who acquired the land at 2727 Johnson St. in 2016, originally tried to develop what he hoped would become Hollywood Adventures Park, whose centerpiece was to be an expansive, outdoor paintball park. Italia is a paintball enthusiast who operates several locations in Canada. But that idea fizzled amid city dithering following opposition Italia says was stoked by influential Hollywood resident Karen Caputo, president of Friends of Hollywood. In an interview, Italia said he recently partnered with a company that would operate the site as an RV park and pay rent to him. He declined to identify the company, but said it “owns several campground businesses” elsewhere in Florida. Italia’s odyssey through the

system is noteworthy. It’s not typical of a big-time developer who buys a chunk of South Florida land and then throws his weight and money around to get the project done. Italia is wealthy, certainly, but he didn’t hire a single city hall lobbyist. Nor did he play the political game by making contributions to the campaigns of city or county mayors or commissioners. “It’s been a very confusing ride,” he said. “I’m not a developer. I’m a paintball guy… I suppose I should have done that. I’m learning.” That learning included recently hiring prominent development attorney Dennis Mele to represent him at Thursday’s meeting with the city. PAINTBALL PLANS Italia, an electrical engineer by trade, said his interest in the old golf course began five years ago. “I was moving here in the midst of moving to the U.S. [from Canada],” said Italia. “There were no decent paintball fields. My son had nowhere to play. I saw that piece of land and I got an agent to call the bank to see if they were interested in selling.” Italia now lives in Fort Lauderdale. The land is zoned “open space recreational,” Italia said. He went to the city with detailed plans for “an extreme park” with paintball, DMX bike trails, rock climbing and other amusements. “The idea was to get kids off the couch,” he said. Italia, 55, says a city zoning and permitting official told him, “We don’t have any specific zoning for what you want to do but if you go to the county and if they allow it, we’ll go with whatever the county says. There were many witnesses to that.” Four months later, Italia said, the county gave him a sign-off letter stating that it was fine with the paintball park idea. “During that time, my due diligence with the bank ran out so I had to close” on the purchase. The cost: $2 million, plus an additional payment to a leaseholder on the property. Italia said he could not disclose that additional cost because of a confidentiality agreement. Meanwhile, Caputo and Friends of Hollywood had begun to denounce Italia’s idea. “We don’t want a simulated war zone in our neighborhood,” the group said in a statement in early 2017, according to the Hollywood Gazette. Italia said neighbors who live next to the property that’s just east of I-95 liked what he was trying to do. Nevertheless, “I went back to the city and now they decide that’s not good enough. I said, ‘I bought based on you telling me the city would be OK with this.’ But commissioners got pressure from residents and then they put pressure on city staff.” Among other things,

Italia said he was told that because the property was zoned recreational “that means you are not going to make any money off it.” The city commission later voted the idea down. Commissioner Traci Callari “wouldn’t even meet with the largest landowner in her district,” Italia said. ARSENIC PROBLEM Italia’s property problem then got worse. The county notified him two years ago about the need to mitigate elevated arsenic levels found in the soil – a problem common to the sites of old golf courses that regularly used herbicides and other chemicals to maintain grass and greens. In August, Italia obtained a county permit to conduct a pilot “soil management test program” on part of the site that calls for blending “water treatment residuals from the lime softening material used in the water filtration process” into the soil to dilute the arsenic to acceptable levels. That yellowish lime sludge, mostly calcium carbonate, is considered clean fill by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and is allowed for such use. Italia has obtained and spread tons of the clean material on both the test area and across most of the rest of the sprawling property that’s largely been cleared of trees and underbrush. He said the removed greenery was only “invasive species.” Italia is using the fill to raise the ground level of his property between two and three feet to alleviate flooding, which he says is caused by the city illegally dumping storm water onto his property. Runoff pipes leading to his property can be seen where city streets abut his property. He said the city has refused to channel the runoff into a nearby canal. “This is why the golf course went into bankruptcy. It was getting flooded,” Italia said. The lime sludge comes from Fort Lauderdale’s Charles W. Fiveash Regional Water Treatment plant. Italia says the plant pays the hauler to take its clean fill elsewhere. Italia gets it for free. “It’s a win, win situation,” he said. Except that the county insists that Italia also needs a surface water management license, which he has applied for, but has yet to obtain. Last week Carlos Adorisio, who oversees that licensing, said in an interview that Italia must submit adequate information before the license is granted. Now, the public-private dance over what will become of the old Sunset Golf Course appears to be nearing an end. “It’s been a very painful and long ordeal for both of us,” said Italia.

Hollywood Resident Wins Three Gold Medals at 2019 National Senior Games

Mama Mia, Landmark Italian Restaurant in Downtown Hollywood Under New Ownership BY CARON CONWAY

Mama Mia, a landmark Italian restaurant in Downtown Hollywood, may be more than 25 years old, but everything about it, with the exception of the name, is brand-new. New owners Alexandra and Cedric Garnier relocated with their five sons from their native France to take over Mama Mia, at 1818 S. Young Circle. The couple hired a new chef and in January introduced new food and cocktail menus, and live music on Fridays and Saturdays. “It was kind of a dream to come to live in the United States. We put all our energy, all our lives into this project,” said Alexandra Garnier, who has an MBA from the University of South Florida and owned her own food company. Born into a family of produce retailers, “All my childhood had been about good and fresh food,” Garnier said. The new Mama Mia reflects those same values, with everything from appetizers to desserts prepared on site, on demand, with only the freshest ingredients by Chef Antonio Orilia, who learned how to cook as a child from his Italian grandmother. “This is traditional Italian food with a new twist and an added French touch,” Garnier said.

The new menu features appetizers ($7 to $14) such as polpettes (meatballs) topped with ricotta cheese, calamari fritti, and hot or cold antipasti for two; a variety of salads ($8 to $14); a soup of the day ($7); and pizzas ($10 to $16). Among the dozen pasta selections ($13 to $22) are spaghetti carbonara, fettuccine Alfredo, gnocchi Bolognese, penne alla vodka and lasagne. Entrées (served with spaghetti, salad or soup; $17 to $35) include chicken or veal Marsala; chicken Francese; pan-seared salmon filet; and eggplant, shrimp or chicken parmigiana. Desserts ($7) include tiramisu and cannoli. A children’s menu with kid-friendly choices is also available. The bar menu features signature cocktails, wine, beer and appetizers. Enjoy 2-for-1 drinks during happy hour, from 4 to 7 pm Tuesday – Thursday, and 2-for-1 drinks plus a free appetizer from 6 to 10 pm on Fridays. Entertainment is provided from 6 to 9 pm by acoustic guitarist Eddy Balzola on Fridays and standards singer Jimmy Valentine on Saturdays. “I want Mama Mia to be involved in the arts scene in Downtown Hollywood,” Garnier said. The restaurant’s prime loca-

Mama Mia is open from noon to 10 pm Tuesday – Thursday and noon to 11 pm Friday – Sunday. Takeout service, hotel delivery and catering are available. Mama Mia’s private banquet room can accommodate 20 to 50 guests. For more information, visit MamaMiaHollywoodFL.com or Facebook.com/MamaMiasFL, or email hello@mamamiahollywoodfl.com. Following his success being named the 2018 Male Athlete of the Year in Track and Field at the 28th Annual Florida Senior Games, Hollywood athlete Brian Hankerson brought home the gold again in the 2019 games. Hankerson won two golds and a silver medal at the 2018 Florida Senior Games and followed up with the three gold medals at the 2019 National Senior Games. He also holds five age group records in the 50-54 and 55-59 age groups in the long jump, triple jump and high jump. A total of 151 athletes, age 50 and over, from Broward and Miami-Dade County, competed in 23 events competing over 10 days of events across the Greater Fort Lauderdale area. The 2019 Florida Senior Games was the first part of a three-year commitment in the Greater Fort Lauderdale area; they will culminate in the 2021 National Senior Games which will be held in November 2021. The athletes were from Broward and Miami Dade counties only and were part of over 1,500 that collectively participated in the Games from all over Florida and the United States. Other Hollywood residents who competed in the games include: Thomas Fleischmann, Powerlifting; Bruce Hollander, Racquetball; Nick Dague, Racquetball; James Wells, Racquetball; Steve Disalvo, Racquetball; Paula Wilson, Swimming; Carlos Zeller, Table Tennis, and Robert Jacobsohn, Track & Field. Beach Bash Racquetball Tournament Attracts Best in the World to Compete at Charnow Park Mar. 19-22 BY ROBIN KERR DRULARD

H

undreds of competitors and spectators from around the world will descend on Hollywood Beach for the 13th annual World Outdoor Racquetball Beach Bash set for March 19 – 22. Spearheaded by World Outdoor Racquetball Hall of Famer Vic Leibofsky with an all-volunteer staff of 12, “the tournament is designed to have the maximum participation of people who come here– not to determine who’s the best player in the world, but to enjoy this beautiful beach and get out of that cold frozen up-north,” he said. “It brings a bunch of racquetball players that play indoors, in the snow, or don’t play at all during the winter.” “It’s their break! They come down here to have fun and have a great time, and it’s gotten so big from a spectator point of view that all of the pros and their sponsors want them to come,” said Leibofsky. “So although I haven’t made my effort towards getting the pros here, my effort towards getting the spectators here has brought the pros.” Leibofsky also plays in every Beach Bash, and was Men’s Open Singles champion a few years back. In 2019, he won the Men’s Combined 100 with his partner Cliff Swain.

Who Competes?

The annual Beach Bash Racquetball Tournament brings together three groups of racquetball players — indoor pros, three-wall pros and the New York one-wall pros — to one competition at the Historic Garfield Street Handball Courts and Charnow Park. Over 200 people have registered to compete in both at various skill levels, while the pro division will feature some of the top-ranked players in the world. “There are always people from at least 20 or 25 states and four or five countries,” said Leibofsky. “We get people from Alaska, from Hawaii… last year, we had guys from South America, from Mexico, from Ireland, from Australia.” Leibofsky believes what makes this event so popular is how it brings together people who wouldn’t normally play against each other. “Indoor and outdoor and New York style are all three separate styles, except once a year at Beach Bash,” he explained.

Beach Bash Brings Out the Best of the Best

Hall of Fame racquetball players like Cliff Swain who finished as the #1 player on the International Racquetball Tour six times and Marty Hogan who won more than 100 international or national titles and six U.S. national championships during his 14-year career have been coming every year since the beginning. Guys like Daniel De La Rosa, the current World Champion in Men’s Doubles, and Rocky Carson, the current USA Racquetball National Doubles Champion and the reigning Pan Am Games Champion in Men’s Singles, are the current indoor Pros that come, pretty religiously. And it’s not just the indoor pros who show up in Hollywood. The one-wall game has traditionally been dominated by the pros out of New York, led by Hall of Famers Robert “Iceman” Sostre (holder of over 100 professional titles in paddleball, handball and one-wall racquetball), and his partner Alfredo Ramirez, (12 consecutive undefeated years in pro/open doubles) who have won more Beach Bash Pro Doubles Championships than any other team. The pros play for money, explained Leibofsky, while the amateur players do not, but over the years, the event has become known as the most fun tournament they play all year, and to Leibofsky, “that’s just what I’m trying for.”

Paddleball: a Gateway to Racquetball As a teen in Hollywood, Leibofsky played paddleball, but, he said, when he went to college “I picked up Racquetball

26

MARCH 2020

and then I never looked back. I would come back once or twice a year and play Paddle, but my sport, my passion, was racquetball.” The main difference between Paddleball and Racquetball is the equipment — the racquets, the balls, and normally, it’s mostly played indoors, with four walls, but here outdoors, is often played with three. “So,” he recalled, “not many people played racquetball here until 2001, when two guys named Scott Hirsch and Wally Schmidt, the guy who saved these courts at Garfield Street, decided to host a racquetball tournament here on these hallowed courts.”

About Leibofsky

Born in Brooklyn, Leibofsky moved to Hollywood, Florida at 13, offering his Bar Mitzvah money to help his family with the relocation costs. Liebofsky worked for several years with the World Outdoor Racquetball (WOR), and eventually became National Director of the organization, a position he held for several years while also running some of the sport’s largest tournaments. Upon leaving that position, he segued into only running events, ultimately settling into running only the Hollywood Beach Bash, one of the three largest tournaments in outdoor racquetball. The others are the world championships in Huntington Beach, California, which he ran for two years, and the three-wall championships in Las Vegas, for which he’s been on the planning committee since it began in 2000. What made his induction unique for the Hall of Fame committee, they said, was that he has done his unceasing work usually in the background, without taking

credit for his significant achievements. “It’s just my gift to the community,” he said. “As you know, I have a real job. I am not registered as a non-profit, so I make a point to make sure I don’t make any money. Honestly, I probably kick in two or three thousand dollars a year into the racquetball, you know about half of that into my tournament the other half of that chipping in for food or prizes or helping people out with entrance fees when they need it.” In 2018, Leibofsky was described by the WOR as “a legendary outdoor racquetball contributor who is the only person in our sport’s history to have directed all three major national outdoor championships.” “For his continuing efforts and leadership to the outdoor game of racquetball, he was named the sport’s inaugural recipient of the Greg Sheffield Award, the highest service honor in outdoor racquetball. The inscription reads: Presented annually to the player who exhibits honor, integrity and true love for growing the game. Vic Leibofsky helped create the WORLD rankings, the WOR 1-wall rules and he integrated the R2 Sports platform into outdoor racquetball. Vic is a once in a generation leader.” For information about the Beach Bash, contact Leibofsky via email at Vicheatfan@yahoo.com.

Mystic Coffee in Downtown Hollywood Specializes in Organic Coffees, Healthy Sweets BY CARON CONWAY

E

njoy sweet treats and beverages that are not only delicious but nutritious at Mystic Coffee, a new healthy bakery and coffeehouse in Downtown Hollywood. Ivan Lopez and his wife Agustina Avila, an accomplished home baker now turned professional, opened Mystic Coffee Jan. 2 at 2028 Harrison St., Suite 103. “Everything is organic, sugarfree and guilt-free,” said Lopez. “And there are also many glutenfree and vegan items.” Among Mystic Coffee’s many healthy bakery offerings are cookies, cupcakes, cake pops, brownies, blondies, cinnamon rolls, donuts, Key lime pie, banana cake and banana bread that “everybody goes crazy for,” Lopez said. The coffee selection ($3 to $4) includes espressos, Americanos, cappuccinos, lattes and more. “It’s not easy to find organic coffee without sugar and also with different types of milk,” Lopez said. “We are one of the only ones that offer coconut milk, almond milk and oat milk.” Fresh-herb teas are made “in the moment that people ask,” said

Lopez, and include green, black, red, white and detox varieties. Beverages ($3.50 to $5) include mint lemonade, Creativity Tea, chai lattes, iced matcha lattes, turmeric-spiced Gold Milk and yerba mate, made from the naturally caffeinated leaves of a native holly tree species found in South America’s Atlantic Forest. The menu also features avocado, caprese or melted-brie toasts ($10); quinoa salad, tuna salad and egg green salad ($10); croissant with eggs ($7); oatmeal ($5); cauliflower pizza ($10); quiche ($10); and sandwiches ($10) including egg salad, turkey, tuna melts and veggie burgers. “So far, everybody is really happy,” Lopez said of customers’ reaction to Mystic Coffee.

One special ingredient that’s not on the menu is what Lopez calls “a touch of mysticism–a very nice and friendly environment where you can feel good and relaxed.” Lopez, who was a civil engineer in his native Chile before becoming a psychologist and an international business executive, immigrated to the U.S. with his wife in 2016. The couple looked at numerous South Florida locations before deciding to open their new business in Hollywood’s historic downtown arts, music and entertainment district. “When we came here the first time, we really fell in love with Downtown Hollywood,” Lopez said. “It’s eclectic, and we decided this is the place we want to be.” Mystic Coffee is open from 9 am to 7 pm Monday – Friday, 10 am to 3 pm Saturday and for special events. Sugar-free organic baked goods, including birthday cakes and wedding cakes, can be special-ordered, with gluten-free and vegan requests accommodated whenever possible. South Broward High School Defeats George Jenkins 2-1 in State Semi-final Soccer Game

The South Broward High School boys soccer team defeated George Jenkins 2-1 to win the state semi-final soccer game. Next Saturday, the Bulldogs will play for a state championship. The Bulldogs won the game in the second overtime with about 30 seconds left in the period. “This is a huge victory for us,” said South Broward Athletic Director Boomer Bray. - D.V.

LEADERSHIP HOLLYWOOD CONT. FROM PAGE 7 support the community. John Primeau, executive vice president of Centennial Bank, and a highranking official of several other banks before that, was also a member of the first Leadership Hollywood Class. He recollected, “It was a good time for Hollywood. The City was really starting to come up, between Miami and Fort Lauderdale. “In the first class, we were sitting around, saying ‘what are we starting to do here?’ It was still a new concept. No one else had it, that I recall. “So, besides preparing people to run the city, and to be part of the Chamber, we were also thinking about what direction the Chamber wanted to go. Hollywood was growing and we talked about things from what are they doing with Young Circle to what are really the responsibilities and goals of a Chamber and how can we help the community and the people. “And it was really a joining thing. We had a lot of projects but the

Chamber didn’t have a lot of funds, so we got people involved. Our job was to qualify people to guide the City and to guide John Primeau the Chamber, to create leaders, and to help figure out what the city needed and how we could provide it. “I also became very involved with charities, and made relationships that lasted forever.” Within a few years, Primeau left Hollywood and became a commissioner and then the mayor of Davie, president of the Davie Chamber of Commerce and president of the Davie Kiwanis. He currently works for Centennial bank and sits on 12 non-profit boards throughout Broward. He remains a strong presence in Hollywood.

For his Leadership One classmate Nicki Grossman, Leadership Hollywood was the thing that made her future path clear. “Honestly, I remember every one of the speakers,” she said. “I became interested in the Chamber, and I later became CEO. I learned about Port Everglades, county government, city government, all the different departments, met the people that really run the city, that do the work, get the job done. I got a real hankering for helping to run the city that I lived in. “And one of things that was so exciting about being the first class was getting the understanding that this will be a city that must be responsive to the residents now, but with an eye open to the future. A year later, when I was elected to the city commission, I knew from what I had learned how important it was to find the projects that the people would be willing to fund, which ultimately we did.” After her term as a Hollywood com-

missioner, Grossman went on to serve for 10 years as a county commissioner, CEO of the Hollywood Chamber and for 22 years as the president and CEO of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau. In the old days, said Bob Giacin, “one of the neat things that we used to do was to take one of the guys’ little planes and fly the local candidates to Tallahassee for the day.” It was, he said, a good stepping stone to what we have today, and a way to have more informed people running for office. And while he believes that there is always room for Leadership Hollywood, like anything, to evolve and grow, he remains quite proud of the program, and the leaders, he helped to create.
