Hollywood Lions Club and Pizza Rustica Deliver Pizza For The Front Lines The courageous work that first responders are doing is hard and it does not go unnoticed. The Hollywood Lions Club raised funds to coordinate and deliver pizza pies from Pizza Rustica to the City Hollywood Police Department, health care and administrative staff at Memorial and Broward Outreach Center. They were distributed to the Special Operations Division, and civilian staff in the main office by Rich Aube, Commissioner Kevin Biederman, “Lion Dale” and Claude Luciani from Pizza Rustica. “Big thankful ‘roar’ to these officers and staff for keeping us safe, risking their safety as well as their families’ safety while doing so,” said Aube. Aube is the immediate past president of the Hollywood Lions Club and has dedicated his life to being of service. “Learn firsthand what experts have claimed for years and we Lions know to be true, the path to happiness is through service," he said. "In three short years our club members have improved the lives
of hundreds of people in our community through vision screenings; providing glasses, street and beach cleanups, revitalizing parks and school playgrounds, providing school supplies, fundraising for ProjectAlive.org to cure Hunter Syndrome, food drives for the homeless, holiday baskets for those less fortunate. And as if that weren't enough, they have just started their second year of a massive recycling initiative to keep plastic film out of our landfills and oceans. Claude Luciani from Pizza Rustica has started a community fundraiser of his as well to keep the pizza flowing. “This has been a community effort and the response to our GoFundMe campaign has been tremendous," he said. "People from all over the country have contributed to the cause. To this date we have contributed over 300 pizzas to our amazing first responders and medical workers. It was an honor to donate 12 pizzas to the Hollywood Police Department this week. Thank you again everyone!”

Another One Bites the Dust: Historic Downtown ‘Bank Building’ on the Brink of Demolition BY ROBIN KERR DRULARD
I
n cities around the world, commercial developers and designers have capitalized on the magnificent architecture of old bank buildings to create restaurants, showrooms and other retail spaces that showcase the unique and grand elements of days gone by. Here in Hollywood, we have an example of that grandiose, neoclassical architecture, in the old SunTrust Bank building on the Northwest corner of Hollywood Boulevard and 20th Avenue. Originally built by Joseph Young in 1927, it started out as the Hollywood State Bank in 1924 and then became the First National Bank of Hollywood. Today, the only thing that remains intact and salvageable for the sake of preserving history, is the vault. With the takeover by SunTrust until its abandonment about two years ago, it was the only continuously operating bank site in all of Broward county. Currently, upper floors are being leased commercially by Firm Realty. Even though Hollywood is “the only city in Florida listed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as an intact historical business district,” the building is at a crossroads, on the brink of being demolished to make way for new development. As of mid-March, the developer had already gotten past two levels of preliminary committees that could approve the demolition of the building to make way for a modern residential and retail building. The new construction will replace the historic bank building with a modern 8-story mixed-use development with commercial space on the ground level facing all street frontages and 347 luxury residential units above.
History of the “Bank Building” South front elevation of the First National Bank of Hollywood along Hollywood Boulevard as it originally appeared in the 1920s (City of Hollywood Records and Archives) The “Bank Building” as it has come to be known, was built in 1927, to replace a smaller structure that had been hastily built in 1924. Joseph Young engaged the architectural firm of Rubush & Hunter, already well-known in town for the design of many local buildings, including Young’s home on Hollywood Blvd, and the Hollywood Beach Hotel, to create the new facility. Designed by architect Philip Weisenburgh, the new building, of Neoclassical
6
design, was much larger and grander than its predecessor, with high arched windows and eight gigantic round Corinthian columns gracing the front and side. Built just one year after the devastating hurricane of 1926, the imposing nature of the structure sent the message to investors: Hollywood was here to stay. The building also served for a time as the Hollywood Post Office as well as a bank. Local merchants tell stories about the early days of the bank, when they loaned money on a handshake. In the 1940s, the First National Bank of Hollywood underwent the first of three major renovations, according to an historic structure report by SEARCH. Most of the Neoclassical elements were removed from the building during this renovation. After the renovation, the building bore little resemblance to the original Neoclassical building of the 1920s. In 1945, the name was changed to the First National Bank of Hollywood, according to Hollywood Herald archives. The First National Bank of Hollywood as it appeared after the second major renovation in the 1960s (City of Hollywood Records and Archives) A year after the renovation in 1990, the city of Hollywood, with the Hollywood Historical Society, placed a plaque on the building designating it as a historical site. In the renovation, most of the original columns and medallions were covered to create a newer, sleeker, more modern facade. Today, almost 100 years later, the structure has stood firm, though mostly vacant, for the past two years. And in the last few years, the plaque disappeared from the building. Now, the only piece of the original property slated to be saved is the original bank vault, according to Debbie Orshefsky of Holland and Knight, legal counsel for the new developer of the proposed project, The Estate Companies.
MAY 2020
Can downtown Hollywood’s historic designation survive the city’s growth? In 1999, the Downtown Hollywood Boulevard Business District was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), the only intact Historic Business District in the state of Florida. But with the recent demolition of historic buildings, like the Great Southern Hotel on Young Circle, local historians are concerned that the area may lose this coveted designation. “The city is not being good stewards of our historical treasures,” asserts Clive Taylor, vice president of the Hollywood Historical Society. “The city’s own comprehensive guidelines state that ‘demolition exerts a negative impact on a Historic District.’ Why did the city go to all this trouble to create these guidelines, just to go directly against them?” The developer’s legal counsel and spokesperson, Debbie Orshefsky, wants to set the record straight. “There’s a lot of misinformation about the building,” she said. “For one thing, there’s a myth that if you peel off the 1980s exterior, that there is a gem of a building inside.” The developers hired an architectural historian to do an historic building survey and they found that in 1940, the demolition plan showed the removal of all those architectural elements from the decorative sill reliefs to the original arches and concrete inlaid panels. “The building that was built in 1926 does not exist any longer,” said Orshefsky. “What is left are the structural elements but the architectural features were removed in the ‘40s and in the 1960s. The medallions are gone, the marble is gone, all that is left is naked concrete around and under the 1980s exterior treatment.”
According to the architectural survey, the building at 2001 Hollywood Boulevard qualifies as “historic” as it is over 50 years old. However, it’s not considered a contributing resource to the NRHP‐listed Hollywood Boulevard Historic Business District due to its lack of historic materials and architectural integrity.
“THE BUILDING NO LONGER RETAINS ASPECTS OF INTEGRITY RELATED TO DESIGN, MATERIALS, WORKMANSHIP AND/OR FEELING. MOREOVER, THE BUILDING NO LONGER POSSESSES ITS ORIGINAL HISTORIC CHARACTER.” “If there were a wonderful building there, we would approach it in a different way,” she continued. “But the only thing left is the original bank vault, surrounded by a six- or eight-foot thick concrete wall, and that IS being preserved as part of the renovation, celebrating Hollywood’s history. It will be accessible to the public and is included in the site plan package. We’re going to save it and celebrate it, and Hollywood’s history.” Another misconception, she noted, is that when the district was declared historic, the building was included as contributing to the designation. It was not. This was reaf-
BANK BUILDING CONT. firmed by the state of Florida in January of this year. Taylor and the Hollywood Historical Society remain undaunted. “They say the facade has been destroyed, but as you can see the arches are still present, as well as the gigantic columns under the false facade,” said Taylor. “Removal of this fake facade would reveal the columns. They could replace the windows to look like the original, put a big medallion back on the building.” But the developer has other plans.
From SunTrust to Soleste Plans for Soleste Hollywood include a setback along 20th Avenue to accommodate the remains of the original bank vault. “The existing brick wall of the original bank will be exposed and will encroach two feet into the required setback,” according to the plans. “This element will become an important element in the recognition of the history of the City of Hollywood.” The ground level retail/commercial uses will be oriented along all street frontages to provide for the maximum activation of each street, according to plans submitted to the city. More specifically, along Hollywood Boulevard, emphasis has been made to provide ample depth for restaurant uses which will provide outdoor seating, consistent with the adjacent tenants along Hollywood Boulevard.
Orshefsky says the plan is to have the vault be part of a bar or restaurant, hopefully a 1920s-style speakeasy. They’re working with historical photos that the Berman family has, and they’ve engaged a company to curate that space, so that the public can still see a piece of Hollywood’s history. “We’re really trying to do the right thing,” said Orshefsky. “But the building has lost its historic qualities and is not contributing to the downtown district. Plus,” she added, “it does not meet current code. None of it does.” “Not historic? Nothing left to save? And most annoyingly stated; not worth saving! Shameful!,” said Taylor. “We will make it our mission to remind everybody just who was responsible for driving a nail right in the middle of the district, through the heart of one of our most iconic important buildings,” said Taylor. “I hope our city leaders do the right thing.” But if the right thing is to somehow preserve the structure for the sake of Hollywood’s history, the chances of that happening seem slim to none. “Due to the substantially altered condition of the building’s exterior and interior and the nature of its utilization, that of Class‐A business space,” said architectural historian Jason Newton in a memo to the city in support of demolition. “It no longer provides information related to historical architecture and design.”

Local Non-Profits Work Overtime to Provide Food for People in Need BY DAVID VOLZ
CARINA MASK PHOTOGRAPHY
Because of the COVID-19 crisis, times are tough for hardworking Hollywood residents. Many are struggling to pay for basic items like food. But, there are organizations providing food for people. Here are some of those organizations and programs providing food throughout South Florida: COMMUNITY ENHANCEMENT COLLABORATION The Community Enhancement Collaboration (CEC) has been running a mobile food pantry at its location on 5648 Wiley Street from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. On Friday, any person can drive up and receive a free package of food from the CEC. And the lines for this service are long. “We are helping the community. We can’t close our doors,” said Marika Guyton, spokesperson for the CEC. “We have to help.” Also, the CEC is working with the City of Hollywood and Memorial Healthcare System to provide food to people who are home bound. Personnel from the City and Memorial pick up packages of food from the CEC food pantry and make the deliveries. The CEC has for many years provided help to residents in the Washington Park community. It provides food to seniors; people age 62 and older on Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Seniors can come to the food pantry and pick up a package of food. They can register as clients when they arrive. And registered clients of the CEC and community residents can come to the pantry on Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to pick up food. “We don’t turn anybody away, especially during this time,” said Guyton. The Florida Food Assistance Program administers the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as SNAP. To apply, go to myflorida.com/accessflorida and click the link “Apply for Benefits.” FEEDING SOUTH FLORIDA: A regional food bank serving about 300 nonprofit agencies, is distributing ready-toeat food. #StayStrongHollywoodFL: City Launches Sea Turtle Coloring Project to Connect the Community at a Distance The safer at home rules mean many children are home and feeling restless. Those who want to help send a positive message of hope, strength and unity can participate in fun activity. The City of Hollywood has created a downloadable coloring page for residents to decorate and display in their windows. Children are encouraged, with the help of a parent or guardian, to download and print out the City’s sea turtle logo coloring page. This page can then be personalized and displayed in a show of community spirit during the current “safer-athome” emergency restrictions. The sea turtle coloring campaign is inspired by the efforts of children in the United Kingdom who started a global window artwork initiative by hanging handmade rainbow artwork in their windows as a way to spread cheer and hope in a show of solidarity during the coronavirus pandemic. A Teddy Bear scavenger hunt is also underway across the U.S. with children playing
an “I Spy” game by placing teddy bears in their windows, posting pictures to social media and tracking how many others have followed suit, according to a City of Hollywood statement. “This creative use of the City’s logo is a great way to express our strong community spirit, get the kids involved in a fun activity, and demonstrate that we are all connected and in this together,” says Hollywood Mayor Josh Levy, “It’s a little dose of cheer during this difficult time.” In history and mythology, the sea turtle is a symbol of endurance, persistence and the continuation of life with a resilient shell ready to protect it from threatening outside influences. Once decorated and hung in the front window, residents can share their photos on the City’s Facebook page using the hashtag: #StayStrongHollywoodFL. Hollywood Entrepreneur Helps Seniors Stay Connected L
ike much small business affected by social distancing, a college junior from Broward County put his tech-ed startup to good use by helping seniors stay connected through technology. Selorio started Carevocacy after his family started taking care of his grandmother who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. “Being a caregiver teaches you a lot about patience and making the most of the moments and so I wanted to learn more about the industry” Selorio said. That’s when he came up with Carevocacy. “Carevocacy is the combination of the two things people need right now: Care and Advocacy. In the beginning, there were a lot of many different business ideas but we chose to solve a recurring problem: helping seniors with their technology.” explained 20-year-old Stefano Selorio. Selorio recently won 1st place in the City of Hollywood’s inaugural FastTrac® Start-Up Program and received grant money to kick off the business. But, before Selorio even got the chance to expand, social distancing became a big concern. “We quickly pivoted to remote online learning for seniors.” “Although our research found that seniors needed an in-person component, it
Stefano is helping Linda navigate through Zoom’s features didn’t mean we couldn’t deliver a similar experience remotely. Staying at home forced me to be creative and understand the opportunities created by social distancing. I tell my friends that in order to be optimistic we have to be realistic. Since we can't interact in person right now, we asked ourselves, 'how can we still deliver the Carevocacy experience'," Selorio said. Carevocacy is now offering FREE lessons on using Zoom. They pair you with their Carevocates, and either by a phone call or Zoom they can help you navigate social platforms or your device. Carevocacy also offers assistance with other communication platforms such as Messenger, WhatsApp, FaceTime and etc. Selorio’s goal is to partner with universities across the country. He was inspired when he saw that his own university, provided

Stefano's parents are both nurses in the Memorial Healthcare System and are currently treatacademic lectures for older adults. “The exciting thing about this is that we get to partner up with senior communities to help their members become digitally independent. We also assist in finding useful resources to stay safe during this pandemic.” shares Stefano. One of his biggest motivations has been his parents. They are both nurses in the Memorial Healthcare System and are currently treating patients with COVID-19. "I share the stress they have after they come home from work. Even when they’re
tired, they don’t let it stop them from coming up with solutions.” “The best way to help is to let your loved ones know that we’re here to help. We understand that learning technology can be challenging and might deter people, staying connected is more needed than ever.” said Selorio. Memorial Seeks Plasma Donations from COVID-19 Survivors from this virus everyday and now we call upon them to help others who are suffering with the virus,” said Candi Sareli, MD head of research for Memorial Healthcare System. “The donation process is simple, but it is only for donors who meet the required screening criteria.” According to researchers at the Mayo Clinic, people who’ve recovered from COVID-19 have antibodies to the disease in their blood, referred to as convalescent plasma. Researchers hope convalescent plasma can be given to people with severe COVID-19 to boost their ability to fight the virus. The immedi-

BE IN THE KNOW. Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is Preparing For What Comes Next A MESSAGE FROM GHCC CEO We must look forward, beyond the daily barrage of coronavirus news, as we prepare for upcoming challenges in our community. As our nation and the world continue to deal with the unknown consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, we should strive to prevent fear from interfering with our response and our ultimate recovery from this unprecedented public health crisis. The Greater Hollywood Chamber has teamed up with our closest partner, The City of Hollywood, to monitor public health guidelines and help businesses get information on pandemic-related financial aid. Our chamber website is rich with resources and guidelines for local businesses, including daily COVID-19 updates and helpful insights on business loans and assistance programs. Please visit hollywoodchamber.org/ghcc-business-alerts/ We should resist the temptation to indulge pessimism and strive instead to sustain the optimism that has made Hollywood Florida one of the greatest communities anywhere. Just look around: Investment capital has poured into local landmarks from the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino on State Road 7 to others on Hollywood Beach, as well as several new downtown developments. When the COVID-19 outbreak subsides, what will restart the economic growth and development of Hollywood? We don’t know when this crisis will be behind us, of course, so we are hoping for the best and preparing for what comes next. Among other initiatives, we will work with the city to find new ways to showcase Hollywood as a prime South Florida location halfway between Miami and Fort Lauderdale with its own vibrant downtown, beaches and scenic broadwalk. We have the tools, location and growth potential to recover from this crisis, and recover we will! I look forward to seeing our positive vision for the city come to fruition. Keep the faith: I am confident there is light at the end of this dark tunnel – a bright flash from an economic boom that will lift Hollywood and the rest of South Florida. In the meantime, we must follow all of the CDC and the Department of Health guidelines and recommendations. Stay safe, stay healthy and see you all very soon! - Marie Suarez, IOM CEO/ Executive Director 26
