It seems like every letter I write here starts off showing surprise at the passage time, and sorry, this one is no exception. But instead of noting that it is almost the end of the year, I’m instead sending kudos to the Hollywood Jaycees — soon to unveil its new name and new image — for 75 years of uninterrupted service to the Hollywood community! Read more inside about what makes them tick, and how you can become a part of the action. Our Hollywood History column this month takes a look at the early days Liberia, originally built in the 1920s as a neighborhood for Hollywood’s mostly Bahamian- and African-born black residents. You’ll learn about our own Crispus Attucks Middle School, which used to be a High School, and was a hub of education for the African-American population of Broward County. You’ll read about people whose names may sound familiar, like JA Ely and his wife Blanche, and you’ll love meeting Emmanuel George, a local “cultural activist” who is determined to keep that history alive and thriving. Along with a mix of exciting school news, municipal happenings and fun updates on things to do, places to go and great new places to eat, we present to you a November issue chock-full of info and entertainment news to keep you happy as we head into the holiday season. So enjoy the issue, and Happy Thanksgiving to all! Enjoy the issue.

Hollywood Jaycees 75th Anniversary Goal: Make the Old Youth Group New Again

e had a heck of a chapter, back in the day! We were something else!”, said Debra Gronvold, Executive Director of the Hollywood chapter of the Jaycees, speaking of her days with the Coconut Grove

chapter. “At first, it was social, it was about meeting other young people. But I liked the projects they did, and I stayed.” “I was 28 years old, and I was working at my family’s True Value Hardware store in Coconut Grove, when a couple of my employees invited me to a meeting of the local chapter,” she recalled “I joined right away.

Gronvold has now been with the Jaycees as a member or an employee for 32 years. “When I was a kid, this was an extremely active chapter,” said Stacy Mahar, current President of the Hollywood chapter. And she should know. “I kind of grew up here,” explained

What are the Jaycees, anyway? If you don’t know, you’re not alone. For one thing, the Jaycees, which celebrated its 100th anniversary two years ago, is not a religious organization. JC does not stand for either Jesus Christ nor is it the Jewish Community Center, a common mistake, said Gronvold. And it’s not (although it was, way back), the Junior Chamber of Commerce, and has little to do with local business any more, she explained. What the Jaycees, now known as JCI USA, are, according to the national website, is a not-for-profit organization of “ young active citizens all over the world, (ages 18 – 40) , living, communicating, taking action and creating impact in our communities”. “It’s mostly for young people, about service, and leadership, and making friends,” said Kelly Edwards, Chapter Vice President of Community and Events. JCI is currently active in over 124 countries with over 200,000 members and one Mission statement:

The City’s sanitation collection rate has remained unchanged for more than 8 years, this $7.00 increase reflects new contractual obligations as well as an increase to the overall material processing and disposal fees charged to the City by the vendor. Senatus knows that to advance in the state playoffs will mean the team must step up and play better. He also knows that teams with athletes who have played in state championship games are simply better prepared than those who have not. “I am taking it one game at a time,” said Senatus. “If we play well we can win. But we have to avoid making mistakes. Our players need the experience of playing in a big game.”

Hollywood History: The Heroes and the History of Liberia and "Danie" BY ROBIN KERR DRULARD COMMUNITY CORRESPONDENT robin@hollywoodgazette.com

Every neighborhood has its heroes, and Liberia is no exception. Central Broward had Dillard, North Broward had Ely, and South Broward had Crispus Attucks. Attucks Middle School, formerly Attucks High School, and the Crispus Commons Homes, all in Liberia, were named after freedom fighter Crispus Attucks. Attucks, an American stevedore of African and Native American descent, is widely regarded as the first person killed in the Boston Massacre and thus the first American killed in the American Revolution. Although historians disagree on whether he was a free man or an escaped slave, Attucks became an icon of the anti-slavery movement in the mid-19th

Crispus Attucks century, and he remains an important figure in African-American history for playing a heroic role in the history of the United States. When it was a high school, Attucks, which is still located at 3500 North 22 Avenue in Liberia, was the epicenter for black education in South Broward, said Emmanuel George, a local filmmaker, amateur historian and self-described ‘cultural activist’ determined to make sure that Liberia’s rich history does not fade away. His 2018 documentary, “Dania Beach and Liberia: A Tale of Sibling Communities,” explores the cultural and social scenes in Dania Beach and the historically black neighborhood of Liberia in Hollywood in the late 1940s and early ‘50s. And George’s current 20

project, even more ambitious, is to establish the J.A. Ely Historical Museum in Liberia, in which he intends to house a collection of pictures and artifacts honoring J.A. Ely, Attucks High School, Liberia, Danie (NW Dania in local parlance), NW Hallandale and Carver Ranches, as well as space for art exhibits, community workshops and more. The school named for the freedom fighter was founded in the early 1900s in Dania, with just 9 students getting their education at Saint Ruth Missionary Baptist Church in Dania. In 1914, black South Florida pioneers and carpenters Isadore Mizell and Joseph Sidney used their carpentry skills to build the “Dania School for Coloreds”, and in 1925, Broward county built the “DaniaLiberia School of Education” at the current Hollywood location. In 1960, a gymnasium, cafeteria and library were added. The school emphasized physical education, home economics, industrial arts, agriculture, and more, in addition to its academic curriculum. The principal of Attucks High School principal was Joseph A. Ely. Ely was a graduate of Florida Normal Baptist Institute in Live Oak, Florida (today Florida Memorial University), Morehouse College and Columbia University and is reported to have spoken at least seven languages. At first, Attucks was a K-11th grade school, and students who wanted to finish high school had to go to Dillard in Lauderdale or all the way to Booker T. Washington in Overtown. In 1952, Attucks added a grade and was able to graduate its first class. Ely had been the first black principal in Broward County History, at Dillard High School, in Fort Lauderdale, named after James Hardy Dillard, also known as J. H. Dillard, an educator from Virginia, the son of slaveholders and an early promoter of racial harmony. Ely served at Attucks from the early 1930s until his retirement in the early 1960s. To many students, he was considered very strict, and was adamant about students continuing their education after high school so that they could make something out of themselves, said George. J.A. Ely was married to Blanche General Ely, who held multiple bachelors and masters degrees and was principal of what was then called the “Pompano Colored

Emmanuel George

School”. Together, the Elys sponsored the first federally-funded lunch program in Broward County. Mr and Mrs. Ely are considered the parents of black education in Broward County. They are buried together in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens North, Pompano Beach, Florida. A high school in Pompano is now named in Mrs. Ely’s honor, and when J.A. Ely passed away in 1984 at the age of 87 years old, the city of Dania Beach changed the name of SW 12th Avenue to J.A. Ely Boulevard. Today, Attucks Middle is a communications and broadcast arts magnet school that boasts the newest technology,

and students who know how to use it. Kids produce a newspaper in print and online; a daily television show; print and video yearbooks; websites and graphic design products. Among its noted alumni members are Bobbie Grace, the first black woman to be elected mayor of Dania Beach; Former Dania Beach commissioner Albert Jones; renowned jazz musician David Nuby Sr.; Cyril Pinder, an NFL player who played for the Eagles, Bears and Cowboys; and Korean War veteran Donald E. Parker of the eponymous Donald E. Parker American Legion Post #209 in Dania.

The original Attucks High School

1968 saw the final graduation class of Attucks due to the first wave of integration. “Depending on where you lived, in Liberia or in Danie, you were either going to South Broward or Hollywood Hills,” explained George. “Some of the pioneers in Liberia told me that one of the reasons that Broward integrated school with Hollywood Hills and South Broward was to boost up the two schools’ educational scores, as well as to better their athletic departments.” Henry Graham of the non-profit Liberia Economic & Social Development was also an Attucks graduate, a few years before the onset of integration. “It was devastating to many of the kids and many of the parents,” recalled Graham. “There were a lot of growing pains. For one thing, kids had to leave their neighborhoods and walk further to get to school, or figure out another way to get there. Many took a negative view — the real truth was that they made the black kids go into the white neighborhoods but not the opposite; the white parents would not send their kids into a black neighborhood because, the media said, they felt “threatened”. “Why didn’t they think that the black kids would feel the same way? They were going where they felt uncomfortable. They didn’t always understand the white teachers. We questioned why they made our school into a middle school, why not Hollywood Hills or South Bro-

Attucks Middle School today

ward?” For a long time, Graham said, The Elys, along with Dillard, fought to keep good schools situated in all neighborhoods. One casualty of integration, he believes, was the loss of mandatory vocational training, and the effect on the kids’ job opportunities. He himself was a beneficiary of that kind of training, and enjoyed a long and successful career as a result of it. “It used to be required,” he said. “Now it’s optional. And you can’t leave it to the kids to make decisions about their futures. They just don’t have the knowledge to anticipate the time ahead.” The other loss, said George, is the local lore, the stories passed down from generation to generation. “There is so much integration now that you almost have a generation that really doesn’t know what transpired,” said Graham. Sadly, agreed George, many people in this day and age in South Broward just do not know much about Attucks, Dillard, or J.A. Ely and his contributions to Broward County. Not only was Ely the first black principal, he was also the first black probation officer in Broward, and the first black person to serve on an all white jury. And then there was his father, Lawrence Ely, who was one of the founding fathers of FMU (Florida Memorial University). “It is imperative for the millennials

and Generation Z kids of today to know and understand the importance of where they came from,” George asserted. “Many of us take pride in our communities but do not realize the greatness that once was there. “But that is not all of our faults; there is a huge disconnect between our elders and we younger people in the black community. Marie Suarez takes the reins as CEO of the Hollywood Chamber Jan. 1 Anne Hotte set to retire as CEO of the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce at end of year Chief executive officer and executive director Anne Hotte announced her retirement from the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. Chief operating officer Marie Suarez will succeed her as chief executive of the chamber. “I am very excited about my new role as CEO of the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Chamber of Commerce," said Suarez. "I look forward to continuing her legacy and creating new ones as I have the honor to lead our Chamber of Commerce into the future, working closely with the board of directors, Chamber committees and Chamber staff to develop strategies for promoting business interests and economic growth, providing leadership in community affairs, and continuing to deliver quality

services and programs for our members.” The executive board of the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce chose Suarez to succeed Hotte as CEO and executive director after conducting a thorough search for outside candidates to fill the position. “The chamber has become a stronger force in community progress under Anne’s leadership, and Marie has the experience to lead our organization to the next level of excellence,” said Martin Shuham, president of the board of directors of the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. Hotte will retire January 1, 2020, after a 10-year tenure as the chamber’s top executive. She served from January 2000 to January 2009 as executive director of the Leadership Broward Foundation, a non-profit organization focused on developing managerial talent to benefit Broward County. Hotte is finishing her second tenure

with the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. She previously worked for the chamber from October 1998 to December 1999 as director of programs. Suarez succeeded Hotte as program director in December 1999 and has served as chief operating officer of the chamber since October 2011. Her appointment as chief executive officer and executive director will become effective Jan. 1, 2020.

Neighborhood Voices

Take the Little Free Library Challenge and Give a Gift to Your Neighborhood One box and family to be featured on the cover of Hollywood Gazette Little Free Libraries are a global phenomenon. The small, front-yard book exchanges number more than 75,000 around the world in 85 countries —from Iceland to Tasmania to Pakistan. Hollywood Gazette is challenging Hollywood home owners to construct and install a Little Free Library in their neighborhood by December 15 for a chance to be featured on the cover of the Hollywood Gazette’s January 2020 issue with the story of the family who constructed it. “The Little Free Library movement is aligned with our mission to connect the community,” says Hollywood Gazette publisher Jennifer Love. “It’s our hope that this Little Free Library challenge will bring neighbors together and create communities of readers.” The Little Free Library nonprofit organization has been honored by the Library of Congress, the National Book Foundation, and the American Library Association, and Reader’s Digest named them one of the “50 Surprising Things We Love about America.” Each year, nearly 10 million books are shared in Little Free Libraries. To learn more, visit littlefreelibrary.org. Enter your Little Free Library in the challenge below by December 15. Where can I place the library? While the City of Hollywood does not require a permit, the following general guidelines should be considered before installation: Book-sharing boxes: • Should not be located within or overhang the public street right-of-way or any public easement; • Should not obstruct vehicular,

When you moved to Hollywood, what’s the most memorable way a new neighbor welcomed you?

I moved here in 1974 escaping those Buffalo NY blizzards! My welcome to Hollywood came when my new neighbor took me to the beach I now have lived on nearly over 30 years to walk our now famous Broadwalk and enjoy a delicious Capones’ Flicker Lite pizza while sitting on a lifeguard stand howling at the full moon! I still howl each full moon!!

We moved to Hollywood in 1992 following Hurricane Andrew. I was a student at Hollywood Central Elementary and ALL of the teachers welcomed me with OPEN ARMS. I will NEVER ever forget the LOVE and attention given to me by Dr. Madeline Levine, Ms. Susan Lerner (who still refers to me as her Hurricane baby), and Ms. Judy Johnson (among many others during my time at HCE). I still have my Ms. Piggy doll and Welcome/Birthday Chart from that year! :) I have LOVED Hollywood ever since. Wonderful memories and friends were made in this beautiful city! :) - VENITA POPOCA HOLLYWOOD LAKES RESIDENT

In preparation for a hurricane, we were hastily attempting to put plywood over the windows. I just had surgery and was not much help. We were ready to call it quits when my neighbors came over and helped till the wee hours in the morning. Hollywood Hoagies Satisfies Downtown Deli Demand By Caron Conway South Florida restaurateur Bob Haupert waited years for a certain property in Downtown Hollywood to become available. Given the success of his latest venture, Hollywood Hoagies, it was well worth the wait. “On day one I expected maybe 15 people would come,” said Haupert, who opened Hollywood Hoagies on July 15. “I came out of the kitchen and the line was out the door. And it never stopped.” Haupert, a Downtown Hollywood resident for more than 30 years, had long had his eye on the property at 1920 Tyler St., behind Bank of America, when he happened to drive by the site one day. “I saw a ‘for rent’ sign being installed in the window, and I turned around and came back,” he recalled. “I knew it would be a good spot, and it is.” In addition to being “the only guy on Tyler Street with a restaurant” in an area full of offices, Haupert cited major development projects in the historic downtown arts, music and entertainment district as a benefit to his business. But it’s the “good service, good food, good price” that keeps customers coming back, he said. Haupert, who was the district manager for the Food Emporium, a gourmet supermar-

ket chain in his native New York, also owns a Starbucks and a sub shop in the Aventura Hospital and Medical Center, and a deli in Turnberry. But the new business in his Downtown Hollywood neighborhood holds a special place in Haupert’s heart. “I love being here. It’s not work to me,” he said. “I love my customers. I have the best customers here in Hollywood.” Hollywood Hoagies opens at 8 am daily except Sunday and closes at 5 pm Monday – Friday and 4 pm on Saturday. Delivery, takeout service and online ordering at Toasttab.com are available. For more information, call 954-5347841 or visit Facebook.com/HollywoodHoagies.
