"Bring Your Own Device" computer classes in Hollywood appeal to local seniors BY DARLENE PISTOCCHI

COMMUNITY INTEREST CORRESPONDENT darlene@hollywoodgazette.com

After hearing that a teacher was needed at the Hollywood Beach Culture and Community Center, Regina Wilson submitted her resume and a Computer class was born. But not just any computer class! “This one is unique,” states Wilson, “because it is 1) self-paced, 2) folks can bring their own device(s), if desired and 3) they are empowered to learn how to fully use it!” The class costs $60 for 5 sessions that last 2 hours each and the classes are on-going. Because they are self-paced, depending on what the student desires to learn, there is no set curriculum. “If a student knows how to use their mouse,” explains Wilson, “there is no need to go over that unless I observe they would benefit from that tutorial. But if the student does not text, I want to know why. If their device permits, I would teach them how to ‘talk their text’ so they don’t have to push those itty bitty little buttons.” Students are also shown how to work GPS and icons on their computer or phone. “We help them to learn how to better use their computer, laptop, iMac, iOS or Android device.” The class is open to all ages, but according to Wilson all students so far have been at least 60 years young. “I find many seniors are intimidated with this newer technology. When they ask others for help with their devices, people have the tendency to take their device, push buttons and do things for them. They don't learn how to do it for themselves for the next time.” Coming prepared to take notes is a huge help. “Thinking you can do something one time and get it is unrealistic,” states Wilson. “So, I assist my students in taking deep breaths, taking a look at their thoughts that may have them frustrated and assisting them in remaining calm so they can learn.” Wilson uses whatever tutorials she can find (like Google and YouTube) to help students learn how to use their device – from online banking to making airline reservations to learning how to create and use files and folders in Windows. “The idea is - each student becomes empowered with how to do these things for themselves. I am very

encouraging.” There are 13 computers in the classroom, as well as WiFi, but students are encouraged to bring their own computer/electronic device to class. Classes resume on Tuesday,

January 5, 2016, and will be held at the Hollywood Beach Cultural and Community Center, 1301 South Ocean Drive, Hollywood Beach, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., Tuesdays and/or Wednesdays.

For more information, contact: Regina, the instructor, at 786-663-8884; or Sonja Ivey, the Center Coordinator, at 954-921-3600.

ELECTION UPDATE

5 vie to be Hollywood’s next mayor

The race for CORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com Hollywood’s next mayor includes two city commissioners, a state senator, a planning and development board member and an Uber driver who has never shied away from criticizing city government. The campaign field got crowded when Mayor Peter Bober, who defeated Mara Giulianti in 2008 to become Hollywood's youngest mayor at age 35, announced in late August that he would not plan to seek re-election when his term ended in November. Here is a brief look at the five mayoral candidates:

BY DAVID VOLZ

PATRICIA ASSEFF Hollywood District 1 Commissioner Patricia Asseff is running for Mayor of Hollywood. She has been a member of the commission since 2008 and has lived in the city for 48 years. She has been in the real estate industry for 30 years and owns a real estate company. She believes her experience on the commission has given her valuable insight into the internal workings of the city. “I believe we need to beautify the city’s neighborhoods. We are an older and built-out city. I see a great deal of potential for Hollywood and I believe it is important that we bring more businesses to the city. We need to revive the city’s downtown section,” Asseff said. She believes that as a mayor she can be effective in improving the city’s financial situation. She believes in the city’s employees and would like to see them receive better salaries. “We have great employees,” she said. Asseff is also concerned about the amount of flooding taking place in the coastal areas. She wants to take steps to protect the properties along the beach from encroaching tides. “I want 4

JANUARY 2016

to protect our city against rising tides and coastal flooding,” she said. “I see great potential for the City of Hollywood,” said Asseff. “I want to improve our economic base and bring in more commercial entities on our corridors.”

DICK BLATTNER District 4 Commissioner Dick Blattner began serving on the Hollywood City Commission in 1994, taking 7 years off from 2000 to 2007. After 23 years, he retired from Suncoast Marketing as a manufacturer’s representative, which he owned and operated. “I have been effective at bringing ideas and projects forward and I will continue to do that as mayor,” said Blattner. “There are a lot of things in the works for economic development. I want to make the sure the Beach CRA stays intact and that it continues to make the beach spectacular. I also want to work to improve the property values in Hollywood.” Blattner wants to make sure the problem of financial urgency does not resurface and he believes it won’t if the city is careful about spending. He wants to monitor collective bargaining agreements and make sure they don’t increase pension liabilities. Blattner is also chairperson of the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization, a position he has held for seven years.

ITZHACK FELDMAN Itzhack Feldman has been a Hollywood resident for nearly 25 years, raising his two children in the city. He was born in Israel and served in the Israeli Navy. Feldman is a cable television producer by profession as well as an Uber driver. He strongly believes in the Uber rating system for drivers and passengers and would like to see the same rating approach applied to Hollywood city employees.

“If a city employee’s rating falls below a certain level, they would receive counseling. If they don’t improve, they would be fired,” said Feldman. “With my involvement with Uber I see how much power we can have over the government. When we don’t like something, we the people have the power to change it.” Critical of city government, Feldman said he has received a warning from the city attorney’s office to stay away from government buildings because city employees feel threatened by him. “I want to learn as much as I can about Hollywood and the city is blocking me from doing so under a threat,” said Feldman. “They want me stop entering government buildings.” Feldman says on visits to Hollywood government buildings and offices he has witnessed city employees doing very little work and spending more time socializing or talking on their cell phones. He also believes that too many city employees live outside the city and are unwilling to stay after work to help residents, especially those who want to use recreational facilities after 5 p.m.

JOSHUA LEVY Lifelong Hollywood resident, planning and development board member and local attorney Josh Levy, “wants to make Hollywood a great place to live, enhance the business corridors and brighten the neighborhoods,” he said. He emphasizes the importance of working with the Broward County school district to improve the city’s public schools. Levy would like to see the development of K-8 schools in Hollywood. He believes promoting

the city’s geographic advantages to corporations will bring more businesses to the city, which will provide more tax revenue that can be put toward municipal improvements. Levy is also very concerned about the rise in sea level and wants to take steps to protect residents and beachfront properties from much higher tides and the general increase in sea levels. “It’s time to take action in Hollywood. It’s time to improve neighborhoods. It’s time to promote and support our public schools so we can continue to attract and retain families in our city. It’s time to get things done for our residents, to protect our property values and reduce city taxes and fees through new economic development opportunities. It’s Hollywood’s time to shine and I will be the mayor with the energy and skills to take us there,” Levy said.

ELEANOR SOBEL Florida Senator Eleanor Sobel has been a Florida Representative, school board member and served on the Hollywood City Commission. But due to term limits, she cannot run for the Florida Senate in November 2016. Sobel says she wants to be Hollywood’s mayor because she knows the city well and will listen to people with an open mind. “I love Hollywood. It is my hometown having lived and worked here my entire adult life,” Sobel said. “I am coming home to make Hollywood even better than it is now by bringing the government closer to the people, revitalizing neighborhoods, and bringing people and their communities together. “Having learned in the past 24 years how to understand people better and having had lots of successes, I believe I can take these skills to my hometown,” she said. Sobel added she has an open door policy. Election day is Nov. 8, 2016.

Federal Highway "Complete Streets" Improvement Project Open House set for Jan. 7 The estimated $9.6 million dollar Federal Highway "Complete Streets" Improvement Project extends from Pembroke Road north to Sheridan Street in Hollywood. A Complete Street is a roadway planned and designed for safe, convenient and comfortable use by people of all ages and abilities. These streets allow safe travel for walking, bicycling, driving, public transportation and deliveries. Some elements of a Complete Street can include buffered bike lanes, bulb-outs with ornamental plantings, shortened distances for clearly-marked crosswalks, pedestrian scale lighting, traffic calming circles/ roundabouts, median islands, on-street parking, shade trees, bus shelters, and other pedestrian amenities such as benches and wider sidewalks. To keep Hollywood residents and business owners informed of projects planned in their neighborhoods, the Department of Public Works will be holding an Open House to provide information on the Federal Highway

“Complete Streets" Project on Thurs. Jan. 7, 2016 at the Fred Lippman Multi-Purpose Center, 2030 Polk St. in Hollywood from 5 to 7 p.m. While no formal presentation will be given, the public is invited to attend and speak with the City’s project engineers and architects, representatives from the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization, and the Florida Department of Transportation. Project diagrams and corridor cross section boards will be on display and information on "Complete Streets" will be available. The Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization is seeking federal funds in the amount of $7.5 million, with the City of Hollywood committing to approximately $2.8 million and the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency committing to approximately $1.6 million. Complete Streets make economic sense; they encourage patronage through usable connections between residences, schools, parks, public

transportation, offices, and retail destinations. They improve safety by allowing people to move more safely and easily within corridors and can reduce pedestrian risk by 28 percent thus promoting walkability. Other benefits can include calming traffic speeds, increasing property values, environmental benefits and

opportunities for stormwater treatment for use in rain gardens or irrigation, etc. Aside from these important benefits, they also help to beautify areas in which they are constructed. This meeting is open to the public and all are encouraged to attend.

Work on A1A from Sheridan St. to Hollywood Blvd. to begin in 2017 Plans call for the redesign of AIA which will include a four and five lane hybrid design. In an effort to CORRESPONDENT address dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com concerns regarding the reduction of traffic lanes on A1A near Hollywood Beach, the Hollywood Beach Civic Association (HBCA) hosted a meeting where representatives from the Hollywood CRA, KimleyHorn & Associates and the Florida Department of Transportation gave a presentation on the planned reconfiguration of State Road AIA Ocean Dr. Plans call for improvements on AIA from Hollywood Boulevard north

to Sheridan Street and work is expected to begin in the summer of 2017. Plans call for the redesign of AIA which will include a four and five lane hybrid design. Jorge Camejo, executive director of the Hollywood CRA said he is looking forward to working with the FDOT to make the project reality.

Camejo had reassured the HBCA in April that “there will not be any section of A1A between Hollywood Blvd. and Sheridan St. that will be reduced to three lanes.” Electric lines that are now above ground will be buried and a traffic calming device will be installed. The complete streets approach will be

utilized adding wider sidewalks and landscaping improvements. A major aspect of the project involves resurfacing, restoring and the rehabilitation of AIA. Andrew Zullo, president of the Hollywood Beach Civic Association is in favor of the project. “I think this is a great opportunity to improve AIA to be more pedestrian friendly,” he said. Commissioner Richard Blattner was also pleased by what he saw. “I love this project. It makes sense and it will mean more development and improve a blighted area. It will make the neighborhood more beautiful,” he said. Betsy Jeffers, an engineer with FDOT was available to answer questions or address concerns from the attendees about the length of time of the project and how it would affect residents who live in the area.

HOLLYWOOD BEACH

Volunteers work overtime to rehome Hollywood Beach cats by Dec. 2016 BY DARLENE PISTOCCHI

COMMUNITY INTEREST CORRESPONDENT darlene@hollywoodgazette.com

For over 20 years, CatPals has been providing quality of life for the community cats living in managed colonies at Hollywood’s North Beach Park through Trap/Neuter/Return (TNR). Each cat is humanely trapped, tested for disease, sterilized and vaccinated. However, due to a recent mandate issued by Broward County Parks, all cats must be removed by December 31, 2016, or the felines face certain death. President Tracey Paige is reaching out for support. “We need dedicated volunteers to continue to help us with daily feeding, as well as fundraising and outreach efforts.” But their biggest need is fosters, adopters and people with barns or stables that might like to have a ‘few spoiled cats’. “We try very hard to find homes for every adoptable cat and with the deadline looming, we are doubling our efforts.” CatPals, staffed completely by volunteers, was started in 1994 when their TNR program was presented to the City of Hollywood and Broward County by founder, Cindy Martin, with the endorsement of Dr. James Dee of Hollywood Animal Hospital – who

his team at Broward Animal Hospital offering reasonable fees and care for any medical needs. According to Tracey, not every vet can handle community cats. “There are cats that are better suited for barns and stables, as they will not adapt to indoor living. But, these cats are great and make the best pest control.” One unfortunate statistic is the prevalence of black cats among the strays and unwanted. “The misconception or superstition surrounding black cats makes them seem more disposable,” explained Tracey. “Black cats make very special loving pets. I adopted one from the beach

myself.” The organization is ‘heartbroken’ that they need to remove the cats from their home on Hollywood Beach. “We would have liked nothing more than to have the remaining cats live out their lives where they have food, water, medical attention, and love,” said Tracey. Many of the cats are older and may not have the opportunity to finish out their lives in a peaceful existence. Can you give one of these felines a home? There is no adoption fee, although CatPals has a strict adoption policy with an application and home visit prior to the cat leaving the colony. This is to ensure a successful pairing, as there are too many sad endings for unwanted cats. “Within 3 days, the majority of cats dumped at the beach are killed trying to find their way back home, or are not accepted into an existing colony.” If you can’t adopt, you might consider fostering, donating land or food (which the volunteers will happily arrange to pick-up), or monetary contributions for medical costs and getting the cats ready for adoption. To find out more and/or follow their current events and up-to-date news, please visit their website at www.catpals. org and/or follow them on Facebook.

generously provided over 300 spay and neuters to get CatPals started. “We have successfully reduced the original population of 300 cats down to 40,” affirmed Tracey. These cats remain along the 56 acres of North Beach Park. “They are all spay/neutered, fed and given fresh water daily along with lots of love.” Where does all the food, love and attention come from? “Many of Hollywood’s residents show their support by making contributions,” explained Tracey. “They thank us when they see us taking care of the cats and acknowledge the service we provide, not only to the cats but to the community (with respect to trap, spay and neuter).” Volunteers also provide the majority of the food. Some of these local volunteers include: Walsh’s Pub, Minute Man Press, the Sun Sentinel, and Crowne Plaza Hollywood Beach. Pet Supermarket in Hollywood allows CatPals to create awareness about the cats and collect food donations each month at their location, and Rudy’s Pub and Restaurant in Hollywood allows CatPals to hold their biggest fundraiser each March - which includes dinner, drinks and ‘lots of fabulous’ raffle prizes. What are your New Year's resolutions?

"My 2016 resolution is to actually complete my list of 2015 resolutions. So by the end of next year if I keep this promise to myself, I will have participated in at least two Hollywood Beach Clean-Ups, attended one general Commission meeting, purchased my first home, applied for jobs that value my experience and education, continue to pray and acknowledge my mother daily for the sacrifices she made for my brother and I. I resolve to leave my comfort zone because living a static life is not satisfying and is kind of selfish; there are so many people I could be

helping yet I have chosen comfort over commitment. I have never been a fan of resolutions because their intentions are to hold me accountable to myself—and that is a terrifying concept for someone who does not like to commit to anything. This past year was incredible but I will identify 2016 as the year I chose to become more socially responsible, more involved in my community and as the year I chose personal and professional growth over idleness. It’s about time I break out of what was and begin to live in what will be." - Jessica Jones

"In 2016, really? It is 2016? I, Ms. SE Fl Fat Tuesday, resolve to spend every moment possible enjoying life with my nearly 94 year old mom, Alice "Grand Mammou" Drabik creating the happiest times ever! We love our home city of Hollywood,Fl., and are proud to be Hollywood and beach residents for over 20 years!" - Kathleen Drabik-DiBona

"Mickey and I often go dancing, but after 29 years of marriage you have to "on purpose" date. I always say this year, we're dancing more! AND we do! Making my marriage a priority in 2016 is a great goal!" ~ Deena McDaniel

Hollywood's top city employees receive pay increases

VALENTINES DAY

BY DAVID VOLZ CORRESPONDENT

dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com

Three high level City of Hollywood administrators were granted pay increases by the City of Hollywood Commission during a recent meeting earlier this month. City Manager Wazir Ishmael received a complementary review by the Commission and received a $29,195 pay increase taking his salary from $189,805 to $219,000. His salary increased by about sixteen percent. City Attorney Jeffrey Sheffel will receive an increase of about $14,000 taking his salary from $187,990 to $202,000. His salary increased by about eight percent. Jorge Camejo, who is in charge of Hollywood's Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) received a $14,586 pay increase taking his salary from $144,414 to $159,000. His salary increased by about nine percent. During the meeting, commissioners praised the work of the administrators. Commissioners Traci Callari, Peter

Hernandez, Patricia Asseff and Linda Sherwood stated that the salary of the Hollywood city manager should be similar to that paid to city managers of comparable sized cities in Broward County. Mayor Peter Bober and Commissioners Kevin Biederman and Richard Blattner voted against the pay increase for Ishmael because they believed it was too much of an increase. Ishmael has been the city manager for one year. Callari said she hopes that the City's general employees will see pay increases as well. For the City Manager and the City Attorney, the City Commission raised their salaries to reflect the average salary for their positions being paid in comparable cities, according to Raelin Storey, spokesperson for Hollywood.

The Heart Institute at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital

Five Years of Transplanting Tiny Hearts

Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and University of Virginia Children’s Hospital in Charlottesville.

by L. Kenneth Barnett Commissioner South Broward Hospital District d.b.a. Memorial Healthcare System

S

ince receiving accreditation from the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) in December 2010 for pediatric heart transplants, the dedicated transplant team at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital has given 21 pediatric patients with congenital heart defects or end-stage heart disease the best gift of all: a second chance at life.

Jayden,

a heart transplant patient and his mom

The Heart Transplant Program at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Heart Institute is one of only four programs providing highly specialized pediatric cardiac transplantation and pediatric heart failure management in Florida. Before the program’s accreditation, many children had to travel to other parts of Florida and the country to receive heart transplants that they now can have in their own backyard. Today, young heart transplant patients can receive this lifesaving surgery and lifetime care right here in South Florida, without being separated from their homes, their families and their friends. Establishing the program was the culmination of years of strategic planning to bring a highly skilled team and a solid infrastructure to deliver world-class pediatric transplantation services. Frank Scholl, MD, Chief, Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery and Surgical Director, Pediatric Heart Transplant, came to Memorial from Vanderbilt University in 2006 and has been instrumental in creating the program. Maryanne Chrisant, MD, Director, Pediatric Heart Transplant, Heart Failure and Cardiomyopathy, who joined Memorial in 2010, is a leader in directing heart transplant programs across the country, including The Cleveland Clinic

The Heart Institute also offers a Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) program providing mechanical circulatory support for children with severe end-stage heart failure or who are awaiting a heart transplant. The Heart Institute and all service areas at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and Memorial Regional Hospital provide patient- and family-centered care to help patients receive outstanding treatment and recover faster. Inpatients and outpatients have the benefit of team psychologists, social services, child life specialists, and education and support programs. The program’s pediatric and congenital heart surgeons, cardiologists, interventionalists and noninvasive imaging specialists all work collaboratively to offer the full range of comprehensive treatment and personalized follow-up care to patients. “Realizing that these children are critically ill — indeed dying — when they come to us, and that we’re able to give them a second opportunity at life, is really the best feature of the program for us,” Dr. Chrisant says. “It’s precious to be able to see pediatric heart patients recovered and going to school, playing with their friends, riding their bikes, skinning their knees — doing all the normal things that kids do.” The pediatric heart transplant program’s oneand three-year post-transplant survival rate is 100 percent, well above national outcomes measured by the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT). “The program is proof that if, as a team and a healthcare system, you focus on providing the highest quality of care for your patients and families, you are capable of amazing things,” Dr. Scholl says. As a member of the Board of Commissioners of the South Broward Hospital District, I’m gratified to be able to take time in this New Year to reflect on how much, and how positively, the pediatric heart transplant program at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Heart Institute has affected the lives of young cardiac patients and their families.

HOLLYWOOD STARS

Hometown 'boy band' to perform Jan. 10 at Temple Sinai BY DARLENE PISTOCCHI

COMMUNITY CORRESPONDENT darlene@hollywoodgazette.com

Move over Jonas Brothers, Hollywood’s got their own Boy Band and they’re making some waves! Benji Roberts, Logan Moreno, Antonio Nicosia and Tristen Serpa, are the band known as BLAST, and they have been hitting the town with release parties, gigs and events since August 2013. On January 10th, they will be performing live at the Forever Shining Concert at Temple Sinai of Hollywood with proceeds benefiting the Andrew Silvershein Memorial Scholarship Fund. Seventeen-year-olds Tristen Serpa and Benji Roberts met at their school, Chaminade Madonna College Preparatory. Tristen met 14-year-old Logan Moreno, who attends American Heritage, at Fort Lauderdale Childrens Theatre (FLCT) in 2011 and in 2012, all three were introduced when Benji joined FLCT. "We were brought together and really liked the idea of a band,” said Logan. “I worked with Kristin (FLCT director at the time) to set it up,” explained Tristen, “and that's how it started.” “I had directed a few shows at FLCT,” recalled Kristin Deffler who is now the band manager and FLCT mentor. “Tristen, Benji and Logan were in many of the shows. In 2012, Tristen had mentioned wanting to be in a band. After much thought, I approached Tristen’s mom, who was 100% on board with the idea.” The trio consisted of Tristen on guitar; Logan on synthesizer and percussion; and Benji on Bass, Ukelele, Piano and Sax – but what about a drummer? They posted audition flyers around town and online – where a middle school drama teacher saw the flyer and alerted his student, Antonio Nicosia. Antonio answered the call, auditioned and joined the band in 2013. “Their first gig was at a sporting event at Bogg's Field on Sheridan Street, August 2013,” recalled Kristin. Rehearsals are at Tristen's and Benji's homes in Hollywood. All but one song from their first album, Evolution, was recorded at Dungeon Recording Studios in North Miami and one song was recorded at Digital Noize Studios in South Miami. Evolution features 12 original songs, all played and sung by BLAST - from pop ballads to rock melodies featuring poetic lyrics calling for change. The band’s rich vocal harmonies are a focus in nearly every song. “The boys and I produced all of the songs,” said Kristen. "Logan, the youngest of the group, had just turned 12 when we started this, and his voice was like Michael Jackson from the Jackson Five." Some of the boys’ favorite bands

are OK Go, Walk the Moon, and Blink-182; but, in the end, Serpa said, "We come in with songs from completely opposite sides of the spectrum, and we kinda merge them together." The writing is collaborative but there is

one special song Tristen wrote entitled, Stephanie. The song was written about schoolmate and lifetime friend of Benji’s, Stephanie, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2013, when they were just 15. The song is a message to Stephanie to stay strong and to remind her that her friends will always be there for her. “Seeing a friend battle cancer was rough for them,” said Kristen. “They visited her in the hospital and took her to Homecoming and other dances at school while she was undergoing chemotherapy. ” When the song was first posted in early 2014, the band donated 50% of the proceeds to Love, Hope, Strength, a cancer assistance

organization; and they've performed at several Relays for Life in the last 2.5 years. Everyone is happy to say that Stephanie is in remission and was able to join the boys onstage at their album release party when they performed the song. BLAST has won seven songwriting awards and two of their songs have been picked up by WBMGR Internet Radio. Where can people find BLAST’s music? According to Tristen, "Everywhere man. It's the Internet!” Visit BLAST’s website at www. BLASTourMUSIC.com to find music and upcoming performances. BLAST performs covers and original songs and are available for public, private and charity gigs. Contact the band's manager, Kristin Deffler of Team Theatre Kid, LLC, at (954) 593-0040 or at TeamTheatreKid@yahoo.com.

The City of Hollywood is CORRESPONDENT in the process dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com of negotiating a contract with employees who are represented by the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). Part of the negotiations involve the results of Evergreen Solutions Compensation Studies. The study of AFSCME positions for Professional and Supervisory employees was completed in October of 2013. The study of AFSCME general employees’ positions was completed in October of 2015. The City of Hollywood is working with the AFSCME union to implement the results of the studies for the three bargaining units represented by AFSCME that is Professional, Supervisory and General employee classifications. The City’s goal is to ensure its employees are making competitive salaries that make Hollywood a desirable place to work.

“We have proposed to the union implementing the study which would result in salary increases for all employees who are making below the market average for their positions,” said Raelin Storey, spokesperson for the City of Hollywood. On top of the proposed Evergreen adjustments and other job reclassifications that have taken place, the City has offered 9% salary increases for all represented employees to be spread over the three year contract. The 9% over three years is on par with the new contracts provided to Hollywood’s Police Officers and Firefighters. “The City Administration is committed to working with its AFSCME union representatives to negotiate labor contracts that are good for employees and on par with contracts reached with the Fire and Police unions. We are close to an agreement and hopeful that the New Year will bring new contracts,” said Storey.

Indaba Gallery returns to Downtown Hollywood with unique African art and artifacts BY CARON CONWAY

FEATURE CORRESPONDENT caron@hollywoodgazette.com

Indaba Gallery, specializing in authentic African art and artifacts, has returned to Downtown Hollywood and reopened at a new location at 609 N. Dixie Hwy. Gallery owner Brian Coleman, who for several years had set up shop on Harrison Street before relocating her import business out of the area, searched for a new location for almost a year before finding the ideal space in Downtown Hollywood. Indaba Gallery celebrated its grand opening Nov. 27. The Dixie Highway location offered great visibility and convenient onsite parking for Indaba Gallery’s customers, who come from “all over South Florida,” Coleman said. “Downtown Hollywood’s location between Miami and Fort Lauderdale and easy access to I-95 and other major roads was another important factor.” Indaba Gallery, which was founded in Miami in 1994, celebrates the style and power of ethnic art from many African cultures, especially South Africa. “Indaba” is a Zulu word for a get-together or gathering. Zulu elders and tribes people assemble to discuss important matters, pass down folklore and hold court. Indaba Gallery offers a wide selection and price range to accommodate shoppers looking to enhance their home décor as well as art lovers and serious collectors. HOLLYWOOD STARS

Five generations of Hollywood family spans 91 years BY DARLENE PISTOCCHI

COMMUNITY CORRESPONDENT darlene@hollywoodgazette.com

South Florida has long attracted people from all over the U.S. with it's warm climate and tropical lifestyle; as well as immigrants from countries making their way here merely seeking freedom. With this influx comes diverse communities and cultures. Hollywood is no different, and over the years it has welcomed many, including Canadians, Cubans, New Yorkers, Jamaicans, Chicagoans and Brazilians. But what about the early settlers? The first families who settled in Hollywood hoping for a better life? Here's a peek at five generations of Hollywoodians that continue to help shape this ‘little town that could.’ It was 1924 when Indianans Byron and Mildred Pell decided to visit Hollywood, Florida, a ‘planned paradise’ being built by founder and developer, Joseph Wesley Young, Jr. Upon realizing the young town had no dentist, Byron seized the opportunity and started the town's first dental practice. The first generation couple settled near South Lake, just east of Federal Highway. Dr. Pell

practiced for many years on the corner of Tyler Street and Young Circle, behind the Publix. The practice was eventually passed on to Byron’s nephew, John Pell, and eventually purchased by Dr. John Mahon, who continues the practice today at 2450 Hollywood Blvd. In 1934, the Pells had a daughter, Patricia Ann, who goes by Ann. Born in a little hospital in Fort Lauderdale, she attended South Broward High, the second oldest high school in Broward County. Ann soon met William F. Hunter, who introduced her to his brother, E.T. (Edward) Hunter, of Hunter & Hunter, PA, located at 1930 Tyler Street in Hollywood, and still in practice today. Second generation Ann and Edward married and in 1955, they welcomed their daughter, Donna, born in Doctors Hospital on Van Buren Street, just south of Young Circle. Like her mother, Ann, Donna also graduated from South Broward High and got summer a job at Meekins Inc. The company was started in the 1940s at 3500 Pembroke Road, located next to the CocaCola Bottling Company of Hollywood. While working at Meekins, Donna met her future husband, William P. Kirby, who was born in 1954 at Memorial

Regional Hospital in Hollywood. William’s father, Robert had worked at Meekins for 25 years after migrating from Illinois at 13. And William’s mother, Mary, was born in the medical building where Donna’s grandfather, Byron Pell, had his dental office on Young Circle. William's parents, Robert and Mary, both attended Little Flower School, on Federal Highway, until high school when they both graduated from South Broward High School, just one year after Donna’s mother, Ann's graduation. So, it seemed like destiny that "the kids" Donna and William would meet and become devoted friends. That friendship led to dating and, even while they were each in college dating others, the relationship lasted and the third generation eventually married. In 1977 and 1979 respectively, William and Donna welcomed their children: son William P. Kirby, II, followed by daughter Karolyn and son Mark. All were born at Memorial Regional Hospital and the Kirbys made their home in Hollywood Hills while all attended and graduated from Hollywood Christian School. William, II, and his brother, Mark, began working at Thermal Concepts, a full service air conditioning contractor in Davie, where William met his soon-tobe brother-in-law, Justin. Justin invited William to his home during Christmas one year to meet his family, which included his sister Stacie, a teacher living in Jacksonville. William and Stacie kept in touch and the Hollywood family added a fourth generation in 2012, when they tied

the knot. That same year, Stacie was also voted teacher of the year at Pines Charter, on Flamingo Road and Sheridan Street. William and Stacie soon welcomed fifth generation sons Hunter Dean and Jaxson Lee Kirby, both born at Memorial Regional Hospital -- one busy, family hospital. Today, Donna’s daughter Karolyn lives in Sunrise where she is a supervisor for Sheridan Health Care – originally a Hollywood business located on Sheridan Street. Donna’s son, Mark, recently moved to Chattanooga, where he continues work in the air conditioning business. “After three children and 38 and 1/2 years of marriage, Bill (William) and I are still going strong,” Donna says. “But retelling this story, I realize how much history we have here in Hollywood, and how much fun we all had growing up together and going to school together.” Donna currently works for the City of Dania Beach as an administrative coordinator, and Bill is shop supervisor for Banaszak Concrete, a company started in Hollywood in 1964. Families create history merely by existing, so while Hollywood's cultural landscape is ever-changing, history is present all around us. Hollywood's native sons and daughters are born here, grow up here, start businesses here and the next generation continues the trend. Byron and Mildred Pell probably didn't foresee how deep their roots would go when they decided to move from Indiana in 1924 and start a better life for their family -- here in Hollywood.

DOWNTOWN

Vinyl Asylum offers a treasure trove of memorabilia in Downtown Hollywood BY CARON CONWAY

FEATURE CORRESPONDENT caron@hollywoodgazette.com

A visit to Vinyl Asylum Records & Memorabilia in Downtown Hollywood is a nostalgic trip down Memory Lane. Vinyl Asylum is more than a vinyl record store. It is a curiosity shop, collectibles emporium, celebrity gallery and auction house all in one colorful and well-organized space. This unique enterprise, which opened in November at 2028 Hollywood Boulevard, is owned by Florida's premier auction specialists, J. Sugarman Corp. and run by a friendly and knowledgeable staff. Vinyl Asylum buys, sells and trades vinyl records, collectibles, vintage toys, sports and rock ’n’ roll memorabilia, concert T-shirts, ticket stubs, programs, photos, autographed items, posters, antiques and more. The ever-changing inventory features thousands of vinyl records from all musical genres –– from the ’40s through the ’90s. Their popular “budget bins” are filled with thousands of albums for only $1 each. Store manager Mike Frost said the reaction from the public to Vinyl Asylum has been “unbelievable,” with the store packed with customers. “It’s a mix,” he said. “We have them from 12- to 13-year-old kids to 60- to 70-year-old people. And it’s funny, they’re all looking at the same items.” Vinyl Asylum’s album inventory totals 10,000, with 6,000 to 7,000 albums available for customers to peruse at any given time. Big sellers include classic rock and reggae albums. “Vinyl came back real strong,” Frost said. According to current statistics from global consumer research firm Nielsen, vinyl album sales in the U.S. have rebounded dramatically in recent years, rising 260 percent since 2009, with unit sales totaling 9.2 million in 2014 – a 3.1 million increase over the previous year. Vinyl Asylum is interested in used vinyl records in very good or better condition, especially rock, punk rock, new wave, hip-hop, soul/R&B, country, jazz, blues, reggae, exotica, heavy metal, international, rockabilly, oldies, psychrock, prog-rock, imports and recent vinyl releases of all types. The store buys LPs, 33s, 45s, CDs, and DVDs as well as select 78s, cassettes and 8-tracks. Vinyl Asylum relocated to Downtown Hollywood after nine years in business in Cooper City. Frost cited the eclectic mix of businesses, great restaurants and general vibe of the area, along with the opening of the Jimmy 24

JANUARY 2016

Buffett-inspired Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort, among the reasons for the move. “We saw a lot of changes down here. We saw the crowd that we were looking for,” Frost said. “We thought Downtown

Hollywood would be a great fit.” Vinyl Asylum Records & Memorabilia is open daily from noon to 9 p.m. Upcoming special events include monthly live auctions and autograph sessions with Hall of Fame jockeys Angel

Cordero and Edgar Prado, Raging Bull boxer Jake LaMotta and pop music singer Tony Orlando. For more information, call 954-2512943 or visit www.facebook.com/ VinylAsylum.

HOLLYWOOD RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT: Rita Gambardella BY DARLENE PISTOCCHI

COMMUNITY CORRESPONDENT darlene@hollywoodgazette.com

Rita Gambardella, resident of Hollywood for almost 20 years, gives of herself tirelessly to make Hollywood a better place to live. “Everyone calls Rita when there is a problem that they can't solve with code, crime, or community affairs,” said MaryAnn Boscarino, long-time friend of Rita’s and Licensed Mortgage Loan Originator at New Image Realty in Hollywood. “When she is called upon, that's it… she goes and coordinates efforts to make things happen.” Rita is one of the founders of the New Image Task Force (NITF), a group of residents that have banded together to help minimize crime and blight and insure the highest quality of life for all Hollywood residents. Rita says the group started 5 years ago when there was a concerning uptick in crime in the Lakes and other neighborhoods. “That prompted myself and several other residents to meet at our homes and start walking the streets in our red shirts with our crime watch banners,” states Rita. “We also demanded an increase in police presence and urged them to crack down on the criminal element in our neighborhoods.” The group frequently meets with city officials to stay informed and bring up troublesome issues that

negatively impact the city. Rita’s love of Hollywood started in 1996, when she was looking for the ‘perfect little city’ to open her Italian Restaurant. She recalls, “I found Hollywood to be charming, close to the beach and the people to be friendly and welcoming.” Mary-Ann was one such person, who became fast friends with Rita. “She was a great chef and wonderful hostess,” says Mary-Ann. “She's a natural born leader who has no fear.” After Rita sold the restaurant she became a realtor at Galleria International Realty in Fort Lauderdale. That was 14 years ago. “To this day I've had the incredible fortune to have cemented very close life-long friendships with many people who grew up here and are committed to keeping Hollywood the little big city with a lot to offer - without the hustle and bustle of Miami or Fort Lauderdale.” Currently, NITF is working to clean up the corridor on Federal Highway, which Rita says ‘is a disgrace every day.’ The group attends many commission meetings, meets with city officials and keeps them accountable for time frames to get it done. “We're still working on it,” states Rita, “and will do so until we get it right.” NITF wants to have a gateway to Hollywood that shows off the beauty and charm it has to offer. The group also fosters fellowship in Hollywood, by hosting full-moon beach parties and

recently holding their first annual scooter poker run. Rita also acts as ‘eyes and ears’ for the Hollywood Police Department as a driver for the volunteer group, Mobile Patrollers; and she walks the broadwalk as a Beach Ambassador, serving as a ‘kind of walking Information booth for our visitors.’ “Even when she goes for a run on our beautiful beach,” adds Mary-Ann, “she brings along plastic bags to pick up garbage along her way! No grass grows under that girl’s feet!”

For those who would like to help or get involved, you can visit NITF on Facebook, where you can stay current with their meetings, speak at city hall, help on National Night Out, go to the Hollywood Lakes civic meeting or any of your neighborhood civic association meetings. “You can't manage what you can't monitor,” says Rita. “So stay informed, get involved!” For more information, contact Rita directly at 954-647-0880.

pet of the

month

Yo

I asked Santa if he would find me a forever home for Christmas. My wish came true!! My name used to be Lucky, but unfortunately being caged for 5 years was not so lucky. Finally I went to a rescue home and then my PopPop & Mom adopted me. They have a big back yard, gave me lots of toys and treats, and let me sleep in my own bed at night and never put me in a cage. I follow them everywhere and they give me hugs & kisses. I love them!! My name now is "Yo". When they saw me I jumped in their car. My PopPop said "Yo,... where ya going?" I kissed him and said " I'm going home with you!" That's how I got my name. I love them and they love me! I am sooo happy!!! What a wonderful Christmas and for me a happy New Year!! 7th ANNUAL ANF GROUP TOUR de BROWARD to BENEFIT JOE DIMAGGIO CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL Cycling, running, and walking are regular Sunday activities for many South Floridians, but their physical efforts will take on extra meaning the morning of February 28, 2016. That’s when the 7th annual ANF Group Tour de Broward will take place at Miramar Regional Park and thousands will exercise to help children and families at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. The community fundraiser, sponsored by ANF Group, consists of 50 and 100K bicycle rides, a 5K timed run, 3K walk, and the “Power of Play Kid Zone,”a sports-themed, fun area for children 13 or younger. Offering something for every age, physical ability, and level of fitness, Tour de Broward registration fees range from $10-$40, depending on the event and sign-up date. Participants can register in advance at tourdebroward.com, or on the day of the events. The 2015 event raised $440,870, positively impacting many services provided to thousands of children who require outpatient visits, surgery and other medical services at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. This year’s dollars are earmarked for the expansion of pediatric programs and services. In its six-year history, the Tour de Broward has raised more than $2 million to aid the growth of the Hollywood-based hospital. Johnny Pastorius is a living, breathing, case study of the impact Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital has for those in the community. The 11-year-old from Pompano Beach completes the 5K Run each year, despite being less than four years removed from surgery that patched a hole in his heart. Pastorius ran the Tour

MUNICIPAL NEWS

Two new housing developments planned for Hillcrest Two new housing CORRESPONDENT developments dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com will be coming to Hollywood. During a recent meeting, the Hollywood Commission granted approval on first reading changing the land use designation for land known as the Hillcrest Country Club. This is the first step of a process to develop two gated communities in Hillcrest. The developer plans to build nearly 500 homes on the 18-hole golf course. The second community will include about 150 homes on the 9-hole golf course. A group of Hillcrest residents came to the meeting and spoke in favor of the plan and said it was better than condominiums. designation change. At this time, the Commission has approved transmitting this land use amendment to Broward County so that it could be considered by the Broward County Planning Council and then by the Broward County Commission. It will have to come back before the Hollywood City Commission for second approval, if the County approves it. This would probably occur in the spring. In 2006, a Land Use amendment to increase the maximum density allowed from 9.7 units per acre to 11.5 units per acre, was approved. Subsequently, in 2009, a request to approve the construction of 645 multi-family units was granted. The majority of the development was planned for the former 9-hole golf course. Because of the recession, this project never was built.
