COVER STORY
On Thursday, March 28, an exciting, new nonprofit concept established to bring the community together to celebrate, enjoy, learn and acquire exceptional artwork of emerging artists from around the globe debuted in the Hollywood, Fla. Art District. The working independent Gallery 2014 will provide an unprecedented opportunity for new and emerging artists from developing countries, as well as local and student artists who might otherwise lack access to the public, to showcase their quality, original pieces and sell them for fair value. In addition, the unique gallery will offer an “artists-in-residence” program, skills workshops, open studio time, gallery tours, art appreciation and educational lectures, fundraising events for other nonprofit organizations and more. Gallery 2014’s surplus funds will go to support the arts and arts education in South Florida. Born from co-founder Elizabeth Sanjuan’s longtime passion for art and digital photography, Gallery 2014 will feature contemporary visual artwork including exhibits of photography, drawings, paintings and sculpture from emerging artists from Florida and around the world. Special attention will be given to representations of the human form, portraiture and the depiction of people in their daily interaction with the world. Sanjuan and her husband, Gallery 2014 co-founder Ken Brown created the SanjuanBrown Hollywood Arts Foundation, Inc. dba Gallery 2014 to become a community supporter of the arts and leading Florida cultural institution. They are dedicated supporters of the arts in South Florida through their personal artwork, museum board participations and donations both through their charitable foundation, Fundación Sanjuan, and as individuals. “We consider Gallery 2014 and the Sanjuan-Brown Hollywood Arts Foundation, Inc. to be an investment in the community,” said Sanjuan. “We hope to benefit aspiring artists, visitors, students, and the South Florida community as a whole.” Sanjuan also hopes to attract renowned art critics, museum directors, gallerists, art publication editors, and art collectors to Gallery 2014 to exchange ideas and foster discussion of current cultural issues raised by exhibit pieces. Exhibitions will rotate; current artwork on display represents the talents of approximately 20 artists, including some referred to Gallery 2014 by Hispanic Unity, the largest non-profit organization in Broward County dedicated to serving the Hispanic population. Among the art to be displayed will be works by Purvis Young, Christina Major, and Eduardo “Eddie” Mendietta, who is the gallery’s mural artist. “We want to help up-and-coming artists become successful,” said Sanjuan. “Even after they achieve success, we hope to continue to carry their works.” The 5,000-square-foot Gallery 2014 includes 3,000 square feet of gallery space, plus approximately 2,000 square feet of space for art classes, live studio sessions, lectures, seminars and more. The gallery’s inaugural exhibitions will feature a “sneak peek” into the local Florida artists that will be

Chaminade-Madonna Dance Team ranked nationally
The Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory dance team is ranked seventh in the nation in the medium varsity team performance division and fifteenth in the nation in the small varsity jazz division following the recent National Dance Association National Competition in Orlando. Photo courtesy Lauren Broeckelmann.
At a time when female athletics have been thrown into the national sports news spotlight with the recent celebration of the 27th Annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day and the history-making NFL regional combine tryout for Lauren Silberman, the first female to try out for the NFL, the Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory Lionesses dance team has made headlines of its own. The team is ranked among the nation’s top teams following outstanding performances at the recent National Dance Association National Competition in Orlando. The high school’s dance team finished the competition ranked seventh in the nation in the medium varsity team performance division and fifteenth in the nation in the small varsity jazz division. "The Chaminade-Madonna Lionesses are a group of incredible young women who are focused, passionate, and completely dedicated to the team,” says head coach Lauren Broeckelmann. “I’m proud not only of the team’s successful competition season, but perhaps more so of the girls’ academic achievements and contributions to our school and local communities." The Chaminade-Madonna dance team boasts a team GPA average of 3.74, and counts some of the school’s top studentathletes as members. Among the team’s members are Chaminade-Madonna’s Student Body President, President’s Volunteer Service Award recipient, Freshman Class Vice President, and Class of 2013 Valedictorian candidate. Senior co-captains Aleka Lampru and Noelle Rode are two examples of the high standards team members work towards. Noelle is Chaminade-Madonna’s Vice President of the Thespian Society, Vice President of the Key Club and Secretary of Mu Alpha Theta, the Mathematics Honor Society. She is a member of the Spanish Honor Society, 8

Science Honor Society, and National Honor Society. In addition, she is a House Captain for the high school’s House System, a Student Ambassador and a Eucharistic Minister. She was recently honored as one of the top ten students in the senior class. She has been accepted to the University of Miami, Florida State University, University of Central Florida, Stetson University and Nova Southeastern University, and plans to pursue theatre and dance at the college level. “I am so proud to call myself a Chaminade-Madonna Lionesses dancer,” says Noelle. “Our hard work earned our team a bid to nationals where for the first time in team history, we made it to the finals.” Aleka is Chaminade-Madonna’s Senior Class President, National Spanish Honor Society President and Founder and President of the iPad Club “TechKnow” Squad. She is a House Captain for the high school’s House System, a leader for the school’s Campus Ministry Encounter Retreat Program, and a member of the National Honor Society. She has been accepted to the University of Maryland, and plans to double major in criminology and journalism. "Deciding to try out for the Chaminade-Madonna dance team my sophomore year was the best decision I've made in my high school career by far,” says Aleka. I've not only learned proper dance techniques and how to be a team leader, but I've gained a second family. I can't wait to see what the future holds for these talented young ladies and our amazing coaches." With aspirations like those of the Chaminade-Madonna Lionesses dancers, one hopes the current strides in female athletics continue.

Hollywood Animal Hospital to Cat spay and neuter program offer free eye exams expands in Hollywood After months of data research for service animals on May 8 and GIS mapping, the ASPCA® Hollywood Animal Hospital (HAH) and Animal Eye Guys (AEG) of South Florida are proud to announce their affiliation with the ACVO/Merial National Service Dog Eye Exam program. Now in its 6th year, the program offers free eye exams for service animals during the month of May by 250 board certified veterinary ophthalmologists from around the United States (including Puerto Rico) and Canada. HAH invites guardians and handlers of all qualified service animals to visit the clinic on May 8 for a free eye exam provided by Dr. Robert Swinger, D.V.M., Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologist. “I will be checking for problems including redness, squinting, cloudy corneas, retinal disease, early cataracts and other serious abnormalities. Early detection and treatment are vital to these working animals,” said Dr. Swinger. “It is truly an honor to provide exams for animals who so selflessly provide support to their people and communities.” To qualify, animals must be active working animals such as guide dogs, handicapped assistance animals, detection dogs, therapy animals, and search and rescue dogs that have been certified by a formal
training program or organization or are currently enrolled in a formal training program. The certifying organization could be national, regional or local in nature. Owners/agents for the animal(s) must first register the animal via an online registration form beginning April 1, 2013 at www.ACVOeyeexam.org <http://www. ACVOeyeexam.org> . Registration ends April 30th. Once registered online, the owner/agent will receive a registration number. They can then simply call Hollywood Animal Hospital with that number to make an appointment. “For 65 years, the veterinarians and staff of Hollywood Animal Hospital have been deeply devoted to the companion animals and people of South Florida,” said Dr. Jim Herrington, D.V.M. and HAH Partner. “When Dr. Swinger presented the ACVO/Merial National Service Dog Eye Exam program to us, we jumped at the opportunity to participate.” Since the program launched in 2008, nearly 16,000 service animals have been examined. In addition to dogs, other service animals including horses and even a service donkey named Henry have received free sight saving exams.

DOWNTOWN NEWS
Emet Institute Offering Kundalini Yoga, Life Coaching and more in Downtown Hollywood Those seeking personal transformation can explore their “infinite possibilities” through a variety of unique offerings including kundalini yoga and meditation, life coaching, healing energy work, workshops and much more at Emet Institute in Downtown Hollywood, which opened its 3,000-square-foot location to the public March 13 at 2005 Harrison Street. Founded by Sarah Parienti, a recognized life coach in her native France, Emet Institute promotes “all the expression of your individuality. It complements spirituality and the arts and culture,” said Gabriela Pinto, Emet Institute’s office administrator. “This is not just a yoga studio but a healing wellness center.” Emet translates to “truth” in Hebrew, and helping clients discover and trust their personal truth, and manifest the greatest version of themselves, is the mission of Emet Institute. Parienti created Emet’s Method, the institute’s customized transformational program, through a combination of kundalini yoga, healing sciences, life coaching and spiritual entertainment. One-on-one life coaching sessions concentrate on specific goals and issues the individual client wishes to address. Parienti’s healing energy work focuses on “aligning your chakras, cleansing your aura and aligning the energy of your body,” Pinto said. “You go into a meditative state.” Parienti is a practitioner of EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique), a form of acupressure that she utilizes in her healing energy work, and is a certified instructor of kundalini yoga, a physical, mental and spiritual discipline for developing strength, awareness, character and consciousness offered in 90-minute morning classes. Other offerings include Emet’s Dance, a Wednesday night class conducted by Goddess Diana, who uses movement as a medium for freedom; Emet’s Hollywood, a Sunday night presentation of documentary/spiritual films followed by a discussion; and Emet’s Juice by Alessa, a detox program that supports the transformational
process through a combination of organic juices, super foods and other cleansing supplements. Workshops and special events at Emet Institute address a variety of topics, such as family and relationships, education and culture, art and creativity, ecology, holistic nutrition and business, with lectures by motivational speakers. Parienti, a former private image counselor for individuals and businesses, was a life coach working with private clients in South Florida for three years before opening Emet Institute. She chose the historic downtown arts, music and entertainment district as the home of her new business not only because of its ideal central location between Miami and Fort Lauderdale, but also “for the energy of the community, for the sense of community that Hollywood has,” Pinto said. For more information on Emet Institute, call 954-589-0875 or visit www. emetinstitute.com.

Longtime volunteer calls on others to join the Red Cross By Michael Vallejo
Hollywood resident Bob Young, 82, has been helping his community through the Red Cross for more than seven decades. This retired fire fighter remembers as far back as 3rd grade when his class made wool blankets and shipped them to England during World War II as part of a Red Cross project. This hard-working farm boy was even involved with the Red Cross while he was protecting our country in the Military. After retiring as a fire fighter and watching the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew in 1992, he worked at a shelter in Pembroke Pines until it closed down. Afterwards, the Red Cross relocated him to Miami-Dade County, where he was one of the first volunteers in Homestead. Young’s contribution to the Red Cross is vast and varied. He goes out on disaster calls, which entails helping those affected by fires, floods, hurricanes and other disasters. He has also taught numerous Red Cross seminars, including disaster training, first aid & safety, swimming and driving ERVs (Emergency Response Vehicles). “Keeps you busy” and “keeps you young” are two reasons Bob Young gives for volunteering, as he makes a call for members of the community to volunteer: “Come on in and get to work,” said Young, speaking to all
prospective Red Cross volunteers. “We need help. We need volunteers.” Young is not only known for his extraordinary work with the Red Cross. He was one of the first firemen Pembroke Pines hired and one of the first fire marshalls there as well. He is the Commander of the 308 American Legion and Chapter 29 of the Disabled American Veterans. “I still do veterans work,” said Young. “When a veteran needs help with a claim or something, I am one of the guys who sit down with him or her
and guide them through the process.” From cleaning up debris and trash during the aftermath of a hurricane to teaching disaster service classes, Bob Young has contributed in numerous ways to help the Red Cross fulfill its mission of alleviating human suffering in the face of emergencies. We thank him for his many years of dedicated service. You too can help the American Red Cross fulfill its mission by volunteering for the South Florida Region by visiting www. sflredcross.org/volunteer

THE LIGHTER SIDE
Are You Wasting Your Time? I recently returned from a Disney cruise with the family and we had a blast (definitely a Bucket List item if you have young ones)! The only part of the cruise that SUCKED was the Shondelle Solomon-Miles gym, but thank goodness I know how to train effectively no matter where I am. Unfortunately, this is NOT the case for most. In fact, every time I step foot into a ‘traditional’ gym (and its rare) it absolutely BLOWS my mind that SO many people have NO CLUE how to train to get RESULTS! During my 30-minute ‘cruise workout’, I saw women doing bicep curls and calf raises with 5 pound dumbbells. I saw people ‘working out’ on ellipticals, with more focus spent on watching TV than elevating their heart rate or breaking even a bead of sweat. I watched men resting for 3 minutes between their sets of ‘pec-deck flys’ and hamstring curls; 3 minutes of rest for 15 seconds of work. Really? One guy paced up and down the gym floor for at least 10 minutes and during that time he possibly did one set of triceps extensions and one set of lat pulldowns. And WORST of all, I saw a women using that silly machine where you open and close your legs, with the intent of ‘burning’ fat on their inner and outer thighs. You know the one; EVERY woman and even a few brave men have sat on this machine at least once or twice in their lifetime (even me, before I came to my senses). EVERY single person finished their ‘workout’ without a SINGLE bead of sweat on their brow and NO sign of having exerted themselves any more than would be required to take out the trash. If their reason for ‘working out’ (for lack of a better word) was simply to ‘clear their mind’ and perhaps to change their environment (because cruise ships are so small with very little to do...yeah right), then I guess this lax approach to working out would be appropriate. However, I can assure you with 99 % certainty that this was NOT the case; these men and women, like MOST men and women, workout for three main reasons: 1. To change appearance 2. To improve performance 3. To improve health and wellbeing And here is the TRUTH: curling 5 pound dumbbells, leisurely ‘strolls’ on an eliptical, 5-minute rest breaks between sets of leg extensions and lat pulldowns, will NOT accomplish ANY of these tasks.....at least not if you want results within this lifetime!. Still... Most people continue to ‘workout’ this way. Ironically, these are the same individuals who wonder why they are not getting results and their body looks no different than when they first joined the gym three years ago. The reason is this: They, like most, are TOTALLY CLUELESS about how to train

to get RESULTS. And trust me, it takes a lot more than showing up at a gym, getting on a few random machines, and perhaps occasionally taking a group exercise class, to SIGNIFICANTLY change your body and your health. If it was that easy, everyone would be fit. Now if your workouts resemble the ones I described above, my intention is NOT to offend you, nor am I trying to be arrogant,
obnoxious or self-righteous. However, I’ve been in the fitness industry for over 15 years and I’ve trained a LOT of people and seen and experienced a variety of training methodologies. And here is what I KNOW to be true: If you want to change your body, your health and/or your performance you’ve GOT to train with INTENSITY; you must not only WORK, but work HARD!!! Period. There are NO shortcuts. No Quick Fixes. Like anything, you reap what you sow! If all the ‘sowing’ you’re willing to do is lift weights that are lighter than your purse (or briefcase), ‘cruise’ on a treadmill at 3mph while you send texts, and go through the general ‘motions’ of a workout, then I hate to be the one to burst your bubble, but YOU ARE WASTING YOUR TIME! Now, although I am a die-hard CrossFitter, and believe it to be THE fastest and most effective way to achieve PEAK fitness, health and performance, I agree it is NOT the ONLY way; ‘different strokes for different folks’. I get that. However, I do KNOW that whatever training method you choose to follow, make sure you’re doing these three things: 1. Training with INTENSITY (it’s gotta hurt a little) 2. Varying your Workouts (routine is the enemy) 3. Training ‘functionally’ (move as your body is naturally designed to move) Also, always remember that the REAL ‘magic’ and transformations happens OUTSIDE of your comfort zone! BEACH NEWS
Update on the Port Everglades Sand Bypass for Hollywood Beach: construction set to begin 2016 By Frank De Risi, Vice President Hollywood Beach Civic Association HBCA During a recent meeting of the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, Keynote speaker Mr. Eric Myers, Natural Resources Administrator for Broward County explained in detail the beach erosion dynamics that have impacted the Broward County beaches for the last few decades. Mr. Myers has provided the HBCA with his complete presentation and it is available for those interested in specific details. The coast line around Port Everglades clearly shows the effects that the inlet has on the distribution of sand: Plenty of sand north and meager amount to the south. The idea of a Sand Bypass, that will partially remedy this situation, has been around for at least 50 years. Political, environmental and residential concerns have prevented any progress in the last half century. ( see photo ) However, Mr. Myers referred to what could be some hope for progress. Finally, there seems to be some support from the residents of the area north of the inlet. A good summary of this is in a memo dated May 11, 2012 that shows a possible solution in sight. These are some excerpts from the memo which is the basis for the current work on the bypass: · The area residents had questioned several functional aspects of the Sand Bypass and also expressed their concerns regarding blasting as a must for the excavation needed for the project. Mr. Myers’ office believes in the beach dynamics supporting the Sand Bypass. Any other suggestions, such as structures, have been discarded because any protection to the nearby beaches is offset by significant damage downstream.
Since 1978
contention through the years. · Mr. Myers office believes that a plan that expands a shallower sand trap northward and seaward from POA could be technically and economically feasible. But in order to know with certainty if this is viable, more analyses, permitting and design is necessary. This requires additional investment in further studies and will also require changes in the current consultant contract. The memo indicates that a formal understanding from POA, other associations, and authorities which have opposed the project would support the new approach. POA has sent a strong letter of support and is prepared to approach the other associations for support. · A recent update from Mr. Myers office indicates that his staff continues to work with POA and other communities. The new approach will require significant modification to the pending permit application. This will add time to the regulatory process but could eliminate the most sensitive issues related to blasting. The pre-construction costs (design, permitting) is being funded by the State and The coast line around Port Everglades clearly shows the effects that the inlet has on the distribution of sand: Plenty of sand north and meager amount to the south.
· Mr. Myers staff and consultants were invited to discuss alternatives with Point of Americas (POA) board members and their consultant. POA (a large residential building just north of the inlet) and their consultant proposed that a shallower seaward trap by POA property could avoid the need for blasting in the area which has been the major point of

County. Federal funds may be available in the construction and operation phase. · Time Line: Redesign and permitting expected to occur in 2014 and 2015. Construction in 2016. The HBCA has been following the events surrounding the Sand Bypass for years. The acknowledgement by POA and Mr. Myers office that there may be an acceptable solution on the way is somewhat encouraging. But as with all the past proposed solutions, this one also needs additional studies and permitting that could take up to 3 years. Furthermore, the new study may demand design parameters that once more could be questioned by those involved. This is not pessimism on our part but simply a historical perspective filled with disappointment. In the spirit of a Churchill quotation: This is certainly no significant progress, it may not even be the beginning of real progress, we can only hope it is the end of the absolute lack of progress we have had in the last 50 years.
