6 local places set to accept gently-used toy donations Many generous families have CORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com showered their kids with more toys than they can find time to play with while many more local families struggle to provide a full holiday experience for their children.

Community activist Marty Jacobsen is spearheading a toy drive and asking that people donate gently used toys. The children who will be receiving these toys come from families who are clients of Liberia Economic and Social Development (LES) in Hollywood. Jacobsen is a board member of LES.

“People who have older kids and grandkids probably have a small closet full of toys that could be used by needy children. People have good toys that are taking up closet space and those toys could put a smile on a child’s face,” said Jacobsen. “Last year we collected over 900 toys for children of the families we provide food bank services for. I

do this because it is rewarding and the right thing to do.” The main office hours LES are 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday at 3220 North 24th Ave. just north of Sheridan St. Toys can dropped off there or at one of the other drop off locations including:

Hollywood Beach needs turtle lighting volunteer auditors The Hollywood CRA is looking for volunteers to join in the monthly marineturtle lighting audits. Volunteers would simply walk on the beach and look for lights. If they see bright lights, the code officer John Weitzner will notify the home/ business owner or condo association. The CRA marine consultant will also be on location to offer lighting recommendations. The beach has been divided into 4 sections which will be audited one section each month until March 2015 when the ordinance goes into effect. Next audits will occur Dec. 9, Jan. 14 ad Feb. 26 at 6 p.m. You can volunteer for one or more sections. (CEC) is hosting their 16th Annual Volunteers and Partners Toy Distribution and Holiday Decoration is set for Sat., Dec. 20 at Washington Park Community Center, 5199 Pembroke Road, Hollywood. “We will transform the Washington Park Gymnasium into a winter wonderland with toys and decorations for the children,” said McCrea. “Our goal is to feed the community and to help those in need. We want to improve the quality of life for many families CEC is working with leaders from the City of Hollywood, churches and the community to plan upcoming events. In 2013, the CEC helped the community by serving 9,626 people from the Client Choice Food Pantry. CEC also helped CORRESPONDENT

268 people find full time and part time jobs. Approximately 20,000 people have participated in CEC events and programs during the past year. CEC is looking for more volunteers, partners, and vendors to help in the community effort.

CEC hopes to distribute 30,000 to 50,000 pounds of food during the holiday season to needy individuals and families and to raise $5,000 for each event to cover the operating costs. CEC appreciates sponsors such Feeding South Florida, EZCORP Foundation, the

59th annual Candy Cane Parade set for Dec. 6

Hollywood residents can enjoy the 59th Annual Candy Cane Parade on the evening of December 6. The fun will start at 7 p.m. on Scott Street. The Candy Cane Parade will move along the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk and end at Harrison Street. It will take about one hour and a half to complete. There are about 70 total entries including 30 floats. Marching bands from South Broward High School, McArthur High School, Chaminade-Madonna High School, Hollywood Hills High School and Grace Academy will perform. Santa Claus will be part of the parade and of course, there will be candy canes. “This is Hollywood’s signature event and it brings the community together. There will be about 30,000 people in attendance,” said Toni Bridges, program and events manager for Hollywood. There will be free shuttle service from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. from downtown parking areas on 20th Avenue at Van Buren Street and 19th Avenue at Tyler Street. People will have to pay for parking in the downtown garages. By taking the shuttles, people won’t be faced with fighting traffic, according to Bridges.

Local artist launches ‘Girl Noticed’ project in partnership with Gallery 2014 BY TORI BERTRAN

It’s a fact that in schools, classrooms, and the business world, women sometimes struggle to be noticed. One 20-year study that, on average, boys receive eight times more attention from teachers than girls do. This trend continues through college, and many women find it’s true in professional environments. This prompted one local artist to ask “What if you could change a girl’s life just because you noticed? What if noticing a girl’s talents, courage and tenacity allowed her to become the person she was meant to be?” That question is what inspired Hollywood artist Lori Pratico to create “Girl Noticed”, an art project that will visit all 50 states over the next 3 years to erect a series of large exterior murals. Each mural will be a detailed charcoal portrait a female chosen from the area in which the mural is located. By painting in charcoal, weather and time will naturally and quickly fade away these images. There is a window of time to “notice” the artwork that has been created. This natural process reinforces the message of the project: “when an individual’s talents, intelligence, and character are left unnoticed, they may fade away, disappear, and never be seen or developed to their full potential.” Pratico remembers what it was like growing up, going from fearlessness to timidity. “I’m not exactly sure when it happened, but looking back I can understand why. Why this wide-eyed hopeful, full-of-spirit and guts kid all of a sudden was afraid of everything,” recalls Pratico. “I suppose it was because the steps I used to jump from also led to

Her goal is “to bring attention to important issues surrounding the demoralization of women and to recognize the strength, courage, talents and tenacity of females throughout the United States. I’m creating something you have no choice but to notice. Every day a girl or woman is left unnoticed is a day too long.” Hollywood photographer, artist and Gallery owner Elizabeth Sanjuan will partner with Pratico as she travels the country for “Girl Noticed”, taking portraits of the subjects alongside the murals, which will eventually become part of a book to be published at the completion of the project. “I am constantly reminded that even though people live worlds apart, we are truly all the same,” said Sanjuan. “Our hopes, dreams, loves and losses are all captured

in our faces. The camera, provides objective proof of our commonality.” Pratico and Sanjuan plan a reception and fundraiser at Gallery 2014 (2014 Harrison St., Hollywood FL) December 10th to showcase and build awareness of their unique mission. All are invited to attend. They plan another event at the first mural site in January to announce the schedule of the project, and share sponsorship and fundraising opportunities. Sanjuan and her husband, Ken Brown, are also backing the project in another way – they have pledged to match any donation towards the project, up to $10,000, through their non-profit, the Sanjuan-Brown Hollywood Arts Foundation. And Culture Center of Hollywood to host Pops Orchestra performances at Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center Starting in December, the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, through a grant from the City of Hallandale Beach, will host the Hallandale Symphonic Pops Orchestra’s 2014-2015 Season at the 500seat Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center. “The Center is pleased to partner with the City of Hallandale Beach to host the Hallandale Symphonic Pops Orchestra’s 25th Anniversary Season at the Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center,” said Assistant Director Susan Rakes. “This is the Center’s first time hosting the orchestra, and we look forward to seeing area residents and winter visitors show their support for these talented musicians and performers as well as this historic concert series.” The schedule of performances is as follows:

TUESDAY, DEC. 9, 2014: “YOUNG ARTISTS CONCERT” This performance features three outstanding youth artists, including steelpan virtuoso Kelly Assam, violinist Natalie Hidalgo, and pianist Julia Sabra. TUESDAY, JAN. 6, 2015: “THE THEATRE AND A TRIP TO SPAIN” Music from the theater and Spain will be featured, including excerpts and scenes from “A Little Night Music,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” as well as some original compositions. Musicians include pianist/ composer Mark Bornfield, singer D’Jamin Bartlett, and flamenco guitarist Greg Reiter.

TUESDAY, FEB. 3, 2015: “JAZZ, POPS, AND RHAPSODY IN BLUE” This exciting performance features great Pops standards and piano virtuoso Mia Vassilav, who will perform George Gershwin classics alongside entertainer Peter Vincent. TUESDAY, MARCH 3, 2015: “BROADWAY TREASURES” Soprano Alicia Branch and baritone William Stafford will perform Broadway classics, including excerpts and scenes from “Carousel,” ‘Phantom of the Opera,” and

other favorites. Conducted by Peter P. Fuchs, all performances take place at 7:30 p.m. at the theater, 1770 Monroe St., (U.S. 1 and Monroe Street.) A growing number of cities are setting up plans to deal with Ebola and other infectious disease problems. The City of Hollywood Fire Rescue department has developed a plan to deal with this potential problem. “Due to the nature of Hollywood Fire Rescue’s job description we deal with infectious diseases on a daily basis. When it comes to disease pathogens that may require a higher level of protection we have protocols in place that outline specific steps to take. In response to the Ebola virus we have established a process that includes the dispatching on the Hollywood Fire Rescue Hazardous Materials Team (HazMat),” said Chris Del Campo, Battalion Chief for Hollywood Fire Rescue. Every Fire Rescue department member is trained for what is known as an “awareness level” This consists of: establishing command/control (scene management), detecting the presence BY DAVID VOLZ

of hazardous materials, beginning the identification of hazards, and evacuation. Also, there is decontamination/personnel protection, Isolate incident/identify zones of activity, contain incident without risking exposure and seek additional appropriate resources, according to Del Campo. “Our hazmat team has extensive training in taking on and off (donning and doffing) of protective gear. These members will be present on any suspected case to aid in the scene mitigation,” said Del Campo. Recently Hollywood Fire Rescue partnered with Memorial Regional Hospital and conducted a full scale drill simulating an Ebola patient. This was done in an effort to identify any shortfalls in the system. “We are still conducting education and training to our personnel, and as new information becomes available we disseminate to our members,” said Del Campo. Hollywood residents can be sure that Hollywood Fire Rescue is prepared to deal with infectious disease.

Many business owners and residents really don’t like homeless people in Hollywood. And many more were pleased when Sean Cononie sold his COSAC properties to Hollywood and agreed to leave town. The City recently hired Laurie-Ann Walton to deal specifically with the problem. She is in the process of building a homeless program with the goal of resolving the issue of homelessness and some of the problems that people without a regular place to live are facing. Hollywood Police officers met with Coninie and Walton Nov. 20 at COSAC to discuss the process of transition and departure. While Walton is meeting with homeless people assessing their situation and helping them find transitional housing, the City of Hollywood is working to develop a comprehensive approach to dealing with the homeless problem in the City, according to

The social worker Ms. Walton and I have talked about riding together to help the long term chronic homeless person on the street,” said Sean Coninie, owner of COSAC. “We hope when COSAC leaves the city that we will continue to work together to eradicate the homeless in ways that are humane... When COSAC departs I have reached out to the city asking that they help us relocate members of our current shelter system that want to be reunited with their out-of-town family members and the city has agreed to help with bus tickets. The Hollywood Police are serving the community as well where it is a win-win situation for everyone. I grew up in Hollywood and I advised the city that I will serve the City Manager anytime they need me for any pressing problems and to help at the time of disasters helping the homeless on cold weather nights or severe storms that may be near. We may be leaving, but our hearts are staying and if needed we are just one call away.”

Hollywood Central Elementary celebrates opening of state-of-the-art 32-station keyboard music lab The Hollywood Central Elementary PTA Board of Directors recently hosted the opening of their 32-station keyboard music lab on November 13. Through a general population vote held earlier this school year, the PTA passed a $16K budget to approve the purchase of the Yamaha LC3 music lab equipment. The state-of-the-art LC3 controller system becomes the heart of the classroom. In the front of the class the teacher sits behind a master keyboard with a microphone headset and control panel that is connected through data cables leading back to each student keyboard station. As students also wear the same headset this communication system gives the teacher the ability to tune in and instruct each child individually or the entire classroom at once. PTA Vice President, Kristi Huddleston says “We are all so excited to bring this amazing keyboard lab to Hollywood Central Elementary. We understand the importance of music education and the difference it can make in a child’s life. Hopefully, the students will be playing Jingle Bells just in time for the holidays!” Hollywood Mayor Peter Bober attended the opening along with several Broward

County School Board Members. A ribbon cutting ceremony took place along with live demonstrations of the keyboard music lab. “Hollywood Central Chorus” performed as well as “The American Poets”, a folk band including two HCE parents and a drawing for a new Yamaha keyboard was held. Hollywood Commission appoints Dr. Wazir Ishmael as interim City Manager

The Hollywood City Commission recently agreed to name Dr. Wazir Ishmael as interim City Manager. Ishmael will begin serving in the position at 3 p.m. Dec. 1. This is the time that City Manager Cathy Swanson-Rivenbark and the Commission agreed that she would leave her positon. She will be taking a position as City Manager for Coral Gables. Dr. Ishmael joined the City of Hollywood as Assistant City Manager for Sustainable Development in August 2014. He has been providing oversight and coordination for several key departments. He has also acted as liaision to the City’s Community

Redevelopment Agency (CRA). Dr. Ishmael has more than 30 years of experience as a local government administrator, planner, educator and international business executive with the City of Miramar, Broward County Planning Council and other municipalities. He worked for Miramar for 16 years and served in a number of positions including Deputy City Manager and Interim City Manager. He holds a doctorate in Urban Studies from Portland State University, Oregon and Masters of Urban Regional Planning from the University of Miami. Mayor Peter Bober is pleased that Dr. Ishmael will be serving as interim city manager. “He understands our city and works well with the Commission and the staff respects him,” said Bober. The City will begin the process of searching for a new permanent city manager.

The Broward County Commission has asked that a cease and desist letter be sent to vehicle for hire companies. The most well-known organizations are Uber and Lyft which have been operating in Broward County since August. Taxi cab operators are strongly opposed to these companies. The way ride share companies work is that an Internet application is used to match up drivers in privately owned cars to customers who need transportation. They are referred to as transportation network companies and are not regulated by Broward County and not in compliance with the motor carrier ordinance which requires oversight over insurance, inspections, criminal background checks and licensing. “We are a technology company. We are an application that you’re able to download and we connect riders all over the world. We don’t employ any of the drivers. We operate in over two hundred cities,” said David Barmore, a member of Uber’s Public Policy Team. "In the past six months, fourteen cities have introduced new transportation network company ordinances that encompass our technology. So I hope

that we can begin the process and that Uber and our partner drivers have a seat at the table to continue this dialogue,” said Barmore. “I am a big consumer advocate. I think there’s so much information that we need to have before we can move to the next conversation,” noted Commissioner Lois Wexler. “At some point we need someone from Uber to sit at the table with us, someone from Yellow Cab so that we can learn more. We need a workshop type setting.” Members of the Broward Commission have expressed concern about consumer safety, accountability and surge pricing. With surge pricing, prices change during the day depending on demand. Commissioners have raised questions about how these transportation companies fit in with current cab services, which are licensed and regulated.

The Hollywood Hills Marching Band was among a large group of Broward County high school bands that performed in the recent Florida Bandmaster’s Association District 15 Marching Band Music Performance Assessment. Hollywood Hills received an excellent rating overall, superior rating in general effect, excellent rating in musical performance and excellent rating in marching and maneuvering. “I am proud of this band. This is my first year as the band director at Hollywood Hills and next year we will do even better,” said Jeffrey L. Lawson. And being a part of the marching band is far more than doing well at an assessment. Lawson believes band is a great activity for young people. “It builds camaraderie and community. The band students feel they belong somewhere,” said Lawson. The Hollywood Hills band performed at the recent Falcon Sound Invitational at Flanagan High School. And the band

We play contemporary, rock and hip hop at the games,” said Lawson. The band program depends on parents who are members of the band boosters. “We raise money by holding car washes and performing in front of Chili’s,” said Celia Akomer, president of the Hollywood Hills Band Boosters Club. Some of the band members will continue to study music and college and may pursue professional careers in music. And many will seek careers in other professions. But nearly all the band members will remember the fun and friendships they made while practicing and performing. High school marching bands are like large, loud families.

The ACCH’s Arts Ambassadors program allows teens to become an involved member of the community while gaining skills to help them later in life. The program is also great for teens looking to complete service hour requirements for high school graduation. According to Susan Rakes, the Center’s Assistant Director, the Art and Culture Center wanted teens to become involved in order to learn leadership skills, prepare for their future, and gain career readiness. “The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood is determined to teach young people the skills they need in order to be successful in life,” said Rakes. They teach ambassadors resume development, interview techniques, and public speaking-- all things that will prove important no matter what occupation a teenager chooses. Teens will gain knowledge about their community and lead events throughout Hollywood, and can have the opportunity to become involved in art events throughout the city. The enrollment for this program is ongoing for teens ages fourteen to eighteen, and the ambassadors meet twice a month on Mondays. The cost varies depending on the number of sessions and whether or not the teen was previously a member. Teens Arts Ambassadors is funded in part by the Jim Moran Children’s Fund of the Community Foundation of Broward and a General Fund Social Services Grant from the City of Hollywood. There are a limited amount of scholarships available to those who qualify. Temple Beth El launches Bar/ Bat Mitzvah App New Program Makes Bar/Bat Mitzvah Achievable and Accessible for All. Temple Beth El of Hollywood, Hollywood’s original reform congregation, announces the launch of its Bar/Bat Mitzvah APP (Accelerated Prep Program). This “no strings attached” program offers Jewish families who do not want to join a temple the opportunity to have a Bar or Bat Mitzvah for their child. During this fast track learning program teens will be taught Hebrew in order to read their Torah portion and lead the congregation in prayer. For a one time investment, Temple Beth El’s Rabbi Allan Tuffs and Cantor Manny Silver will tutor children one on one and custom tailor the program to fit each child’s needs. Classes will be available in person, by Skype or Facetime to make it convenient for families with busy schedules or families that live outside the immediate area. For no additional cost, families will be able to have their service in Temple Beth El’s sanctuary officiated by both the Rabbi and the Cantor. “Studies show that only 31% of Jews in the United States are affiliated with a synagogue, but we know there are so many more people who would like to experience Jewish milestones,” said Rabbi Allan Tuffs. “Temple Beth El of Hollywood is blending traditions with technology to best meet the needs of modern day families in our community.” The Acclerated Prep Program is offered 12 months prior to the child’s Bar/Bat Mitzvah. Broward voters approve $800 million bond; Hollywood schools to receive significant improvements BY DAVID VOLZ CORRESPONDENT

Students at Broward County Schools will see improved facilities, more technology and more resources for arts and athletics. The Broward County voters approved an $800 million General Obligation Bond during the November 4 election. “We would like to thank all of our parents, employees, students and community members for working incredibly hard over the past several months to inform our community about the critical needs facing our schools,” said Broward Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie. “The General Obligation Bond will provide the funds necessary to meet our schools’ most critical lifesafety, technology and facility needs, as well as invest in music, art and athletic programs. The Bond is an investment in our students’ futures, as we work to provide them with the resources they need to learn to their highest potential.” Hollywood Hills High School will receive a budget of $15,871,000 for major renovations. Other schools

in Hollywood will receive money for significant improvements. Because of the Bond, 212 schools will have work performed on their building envelopes, roofs, and windows. Many District schools will have wall renovations and replacements. 217 schools will have renovations done on their HVAC systems to ensure that every school in the District has fully-functioning air conditioning and improved air quality. There will be 287 safety projects across the District to address all fire alarm and fire sprinkler needs. Also, every school will have a complete single point of entry system. All District schools will see improvements to their computers and technology infrastructure; These schools will also receive $100,000 in funding from the Bond that can be used to support school identified capital improvement projects. This bond is needed by the school system. In May 2008, the Florida Legislature reduced the tax on property values that provides capital revenues for school districts to address facility and equipment needs from $2 per $1,000 of taxable value to $1.75. In 2009, the legislature further reduced the tax rate by another 25 cents, to $1.50 per $1,000 of taxable value. Because of this loss,

the Broward County school system was forced to cut $1.8 billion in capital projects for schools and facilities. This means that Broward taxpayers are spending less on education than in previous years. Forty percent of the District’s school buildings are more than 25 years old and the average age is 27 years old. In all buildings, roofs, air conditioners, electrical systems and plumbing have a limited lifespan and need repair or replacement. A Broward County homeowner with a home valued at $225,000 will realize an average increase in capital outlay tax of $50 per year over the life of the bond. The homeowner’s capital outlay tax will be about $127 less per year than it was in 2007. This means the homeowner will pay about 26 percent less in capital outlay than seven years ago. A Broward County condominium owner with a condominium valued at $105,000 will realize and average increase in capital outlay tax of $20 per year over the life of the bonds. This is $72 less per year than it was in 2007. This means that the condominium owner will still be paying 33 percent less in capital outlay tax than seven years ago.

Hollywood Beach has the U.S. Army Reserves to thank for a boutique condominium being built at the northern end of Ocean Drive. I could write a dissertation on the lessons I learned and was reminded of from ‘Oprah’s Life You Want’ tour weekend, but I’d like to share the ones that resonated with me the most, (with a slight health and fitness spin of course) in hopes that they may inspire you to make decisions and take actions that will move you towards creating the Life You Really Want!

1. KARMA IS REAL

Whether you believe in this law or not, Karma is real. The energy you put out will ALWAYS come back to you in ‘like kind’. In other words, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. I see this law in effect every day with my clients. Those who consistently show up, put forth 100% effort in their workouts and have disciplined eating habits, get the best results. Those who don’t… well…they don’t. There is no magic in this law. It’s as simple as this: you reap what you sow. If you want to be leaner, slimmer, fitter and healthier then guess what? You MUST do the work. Period.The more you put in, the more you’ll get back. That’s not rhetoric, but law! You can choose to take shortcuts (pills, diets, body wraps etc) in hopes of getting fast results but they will not last, because the ‘energy’ has not been invested in order for the results to be returned. The effort you put forth to get the body and health you want will not always be easy or convenient, but I promise you this: it will be worth it!

2. EVERYTHING MATTERS

Pastor, Author, and one of Oprah’s tour trailblazers, Rob Bell said this: ‘Everything matters:the big things, the little things, the mundane things, the repetitive things, the exciting things and all the things ‘in between; they all matter’. It’s easy and typical to take the seemingly insignificant moments of our life for granted (laundry, homework, errands etc.) but those moments COUNT A D V E R T O R I A L

too. Nothing is irrelevant to your life, and every moment, every choice, every decision, every encounter… matters. As a person who tends to move VERY fast, not usually taking time to ‘smell the roses’ this was a HUGE reminder for me. So how does this principle apply to your health and fitness? Well, exactly the same. EVERYTHING MATTERS. When it comes to transforming your body and improving your health: getting enough sleep matters, drinking plenty of water matters (half your body weight in ounces), managing your stress matters, weight training matters, stretching matters, detoxing matters, eating enough vegetables and healthy fats matter, consistency matters, working hard matters… it ALL matters. In 2006 I named my training studio Synergize (now Synergize home of CrossFit 954), because I believe in the idea of synergy, the idea that EVERYTHING that you do contributes exponentially to your end result. Therefore, if you want AWESOME, jaw-dropping results, give attention to all that you do (or do not do), the BIG things, the little things and everything in between because in the end…it all matters!

3. BE CLEAR

One of the most seemingly simply, yet ironically most difficult, questions to ask yourself is ‘What do I want? It is this question that Elizabeth Gilbert (another ‘Oprah trailblazer’ and author of ‘Eat. Pray. Love’) asked herself 15 years ago before divorcing her husband and traveling around the world to find the answer to that question. Most people give the most generic and vague answer to this question: ‘I want to be happy’. I want to be wealthy’. I want to be free’. ‘I want to be fit’. ‘I want to lose weight. I’m sure you would agree that what makes you happy may not be what makes me happy, and what you consider ‘fit’ may not be what I consider fit. So the next question is: ‘What does happiness, wealth, fitness, or whatever you want, look like for you? Do you want to fit into a pair of size 6 jeans, run a marathon or just get off your meds? Do you have a CLEAR picture of what you want that you can imagine and describe with vivid detail? If not, there is a likely chance that you won’t achieve it. I often tell my clients (and myself) you cannot hit a target if you don’t know where it is, therefore be VERY CLEAR about your desired end result. How do you define being fit? For some, it may be running a mile in under 5 minutes or winning the CrossFit Games, and for others, like my client Cherri B., fitness is simply being able to play with her grandchildren instead of watching them play. My point is this: until you are clear there is hesitancy. Clarity is the force that opens the door to achieving any goal, so take time and identify EXACTLY what you want as vividly as possible, and then once it is clear …ACT! Not tomorrow, not next week, but TODAY, because right now, TODAY, is all you have.

4. EMBRACE PAIN

Iyanla Vanzant, Oprah’s final trailblazer on the ‘Life you Want’ Tour said this: ‘Everything you want is on the other side of the labor pain it takes to birth it’. WOW. ‘As an Ivy League graduate, business owner and mother of two, I would agree that truer words have never been spoken. Sometimes to get what you want, you’ve got to be willing to endure the occasional, yet inevitable, discomforts of the journey. As I always tell my clients: ‘get comfortable with being uncomfortable because that’s where the magic happens… outside the comfort zone’. Waking up to workout at the crack of dawn or after a long day of work, choosing the grilled chicken salad over the burger and fries, passing on the cocktail in favor of water, are all habits that can be very HARD and ‘uncomfortable’ to consistently implement, but they are also the habits that will yield the best results. After all, if it were easy, obesity wouldn’t be an epidemic and everyone would be prancing around the beach shirtless and in string bikinis. Right? The bottom line is this: you can have whatever it is you desire, as long as you’re willing to embrace the inevitable ‘pain’ that you will encounter on any worthwhile quest. Hollywood seeks new City Manager Hollywood City Manager Cathy dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com Swanson-Rivenbark has officially accepted the position of City Manager for Coral Gables. She was well respected for her work but had received some criticism for her handling of a group of contract workers. “She did a phenomenal job and got us through the worst times our city has ever seen,” commented Vice Mayor Patricia Asseff. “I am sure she will be missed. It is really hard losing a good city manager.” Asseff also understands that Coral Gables may offer a better opportunity for Swanson-Rivenbark. “A city manager wants to be where she is wanted. She will do a great job and will get more money. She is very capable,” said Asseff. Swanson-Rivenbark came to Hollywood from Coral Gables in May of 2009 and began as an assistant city manager and became the city manager in June of 2012. Some of her accomplishments include leading the Johnson Street Redevelopment (commonly known as the Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort) and the conversion of an old fire station into a downtown Hollywood campus for Barry University’s College of Health Sciences. She guided the City out of financial urgency and in to a more sustainable business model. She worked with Sean Cononie on the relocation of his homeless facility, and led the merging of the Beach and Downtown The Hollywood City Community Commission recently agreed to name Redevelopment Agency (CRA) offices Dr. Wazir Ishmael as interim City into a unified agency. Swanson-Rivenbark was involved in the hiring of Wazir Ishmael, who is the Assistant City Manager for Sustainable Development, and Frank Fernandez, who is the Assistant City Manager for Public Safety/Chief of Police. She also had a part in hiring Community and Economic Development Director Davon Barbour, Labor Relations Director Raquel Elejabarieta, Human Resources Director Tammie Hechler, Director of Real Estate Fred Hopkins, Public Works director Sylvia Glazer and promoting Public Utilities Director Steve Joseph, Fire Chief Eric Busenbarrick, and Building Director Reggie Cox. Working with the City’s unions, Swanson-Rivenbark revised several of Hollywood’s policies including better benefits for part time employees, the introduction of a flexible spending card to help employees with rising health care coverage, the introduction of a free employee wellness program, improved learning and development offerings. She also hired Jennifer Solinger, who introduced other affordable but meaningful employee benefits. The employee recruitment process is now stricter with better background checks and reviews. Notably, the highest number of police officers and other employees have been hired in recent history, according to Joann Hussey, spokesperson for the City of Hollywood. “This is a huge loss for the City and her shoes will be difficult to fill,” said Mayor Peter Bober. “I think some people treated her shabbily and she has other opportunities.” Bober said he expects there will be an interim city manager for a period of time. The commission will have an opportunity to evaluate who should have the job on a permanent basis. “We need someone who has an understanding of the importance of building our neighborhoods, prioritizing public safety and understanding of labor issues. We need someone who has the ability to work with average residents on community projects.” said Bober. The City of Hollywood is now in the process of seeking a new City Manager.
