Greenberg-Traurig, LLP. The Neighborhood Olympics was initiated by the city’s Housing and Community Redevelopment Department. Its goal is to engage residents in their neighborhood associations, encourage working relationships among neighborhoods to improve their communities and promote city programs. The Olympics continues through August 31 with residents working together to earn points for projects like painting a home, establishing a neighborhood crime watch group, complying with code violations or attending the field day. Gold, silver and bronze awards will be presented to the top three neighborhoods. The winners will also receive $1,000, $500 and $250 respectively, thanks to the generosity of Adviron Environmental Systems, to be used for continued neighborhood programs.

HAPPENINGS

Downtown Comedy Fest hits Hollywood June 13-14 by Caron Conway Correspondent Hollywood real estate professional Randy Singer has channeled his unusual night job into a quest to bring stand-up comedy to the downtown arts and entertainment district. Singer is a foreclosure specialist by day and a house emcee at a Boca Raton comedy club by night. He recently started another Hollywood business, Low Brow Entertainment Co., which is launching the Downtown Comedy Fest this month. Award-winning stand-up comedian Eddie Brill, a Hollywood native, will kick off the three-month festival June 13-14. For all that Downtown Hollywood has to offer – its eclectic selection of restaurants, pubs and jazz clubs, and arts amenities – there isn’t a single comedy club to be found. “This is the first time standup comedy has been brought downtown,” said Singer. But he’s taking an untraditional route, hosting his acts at the Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center at 1770 Monroe St. “I’m trying to bring stand-up comedy out of the club and into the theater,” Singer said. “It’s a different atmosphere.” One benefit of the theater setting: “No two-drink minimum,” he quipped. Singer is hoping to fill the 500-seat theater with fans of Brill, an internationally renowned comedian who has taped more than 100 television shows in six different countries. For the past decade, Brill has worked on the Late Show with David Letterman and serves as the “audience warm-up” and talent coordinator for the comedians who appear on the show. A three-time MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets & Clubs) Award-winner for Best Male Standup Comic, Brill’s acting credits include films and animated series, and he serves as the consulting editor and humor consultant for Reader’s Digest. He also started the successful Paper Moon Comedy Club in New York City and, along with notable comedy writer and producer Norman

The fundraiser enabled Junior Chamber members to take 75 low-income youngsters to a private opening at Target, where they each were given $100 to shop for school supplies and clothes. Vanchieri and Junior Chamber president Tai Vaz are hoping this year’s auction will draw an even larger crowd. Their goal is to take at least 100 children on a back-to-school shopping spree. Some local families are “just one paycheck away from being homeless, and the Junior Chamber project is more important than ever, “especially with social service funding cuts, Vaz said. “The people who are really hurt are the ones who need help the most, she said. “The need is so high, and it’s existing in our community. Sponsors will be featured in all of the event’s promotional materials. Last year’s diverse group of bachelors included business executives, doctors, firefighters and police officers, an assistant principal and a bartender. Bachelors and bachelorettes must be at least 18 years old and will participate in a fun interview session during the auction. The Bachelor/Bachelorette Auction will be held from 8:30 to10 p.m. Thurs., July 31 at Nikki Marina,

Foster healthy eating habits throughout the summer Anyone who’s seen me around town recently knows I’ve been on a health kick. With the summer practically here, we’re all thinking about how we can LAURABURDICK enjoy eating and still don a bathing SHERMAN DININGCOLUMN suit. By feasting on deliciously seasoned protein, veggies, fruit and whole grains, I’ve made great strides in the right direction. There are a number of great eateries in our quaint little town where you can dine healthily for reasonable prices. Enjoying them all, below are a few places I found on my healthy, freah and ‘low-cal’ quest that should please your palates and wallets too.

Coral Rose Café 1840 Harrison Street Hollywood, Fl 33020 (954) 925-4414 Open M-F @ 7 am and Sat/Sun @ 8 am Closes every day at 3 pm Longstanding popular breakfast spot, the Coral Rose happens to have some of the lowest fat and tasty fare around. If you’re hell bent on the usual American fare, even the 2 -2-2 consisting of two pancakes, two eggs, two sausage links or patties ($2.99 before 11 am) offers a choice of whole wheat or buckwheat instead of the more fattening buttermilk version. One recent morning, I dined on grilled fresh Turkey Breast, two eggs (egg whites on request), with whole wheat and fruit homemade bread ($8.75). You can also do what I did and substitute tomatoes (or fruit) for potatoes. Owner Jack Umansky’s bread is milk free and once you try his home made breads, you’ll never go back. There are so many

healthy options from Chicken Breast and eggs ($8.75), Omelets ($5.50) with healthy add-ons like Spinach, or Feta, or Tabouli Omelet ($6.95) to the Kaplan Omelet featuring Feta and Spinach ($8.95). But my absolute favorite, and yes -- I have it for breakfast—is the Gyro Sandwich with Greek Salad. Lean and fresh off the spit, the gyro is fabulously tasty. Add the homemade pita (here I deviate with whole wheat), and a huge Greek salad with Kalamata olives, peppers and feta cheese and for $8.95, it’s an amazing low cal feast. Best yet, though, if you never tasted Umansky’s proud creation: his Homemade Monster Chicken Burger, you’re in for a treat. This gargantuan burger is chock full of seasoning and veggies, and shockingly --no grains. Complete with potatoes or salad($7.50 on special), plan on bringing at least half of it home.

Owner Robert Borday only opened this sandwich style shop less than six months ago, but the eatery is already well on its way to becoming a Hollywood institution. Born the son of a falafel maker, Borday was raised on secrets of falafel making while his father fine tuned the craft on the streets of Brooklyn., Like father, like son, and after decades of perfecting and selling falafels in Rhode Island, Borday moved the family recipe here to Hollywood. Judging from the lunchtime crowd, it’s a good thing he did. While falafels carry their own spin, these are deep fried in canola oil, and made of healthy “stuff” -- fresh chickpea , cilantro, onion, garlic and spice. That’s probably why these falafel balls are truly the best I’ve ever eaten. Those seeking a little bit of the Mediterranean can plunge into the Falafel Fusion Platter, and for only $8.50, you can delight in falafels, homemade humus, Israeli sty le salad Fatoosh, Tahini -free Baba Ganoush (toasted eggplant with lemon juice, parsley, garlic, tomatoes and olive oil), grape leaves and Pita Bread. Best yet, for only $1, you can add Chicken, Coral Rose creation: Monster Chicken Burger 12

STAFF PhotoBYLaura Burdick Sherman

Owned by a couple after my own heart -- Caitie O’Hara and Chris Rainwater, this California style eatery opened less than a year ago, and has already built up a following. There’s a reason. The Hermosa Beach- Oregon couple spent enough time in my former homeland to know how to cook up Mexican cuisine, and it isn’t Tex Mex. Just one look at these clean living surfers and you’ll trust them with your stomachs. And, since prices are as lean as the fare, there’s nothing not to like. From the freshly made Pico de Gallo and fresh cilantro-cream, tomatillo and salsa sauces (of which there are plenty) to the clean taste of chicken and beef,

or Gyro, or for a splurge of 2 bucks more, you can add them both. Those swearing off carbs will be pleased with their unique healthy curio platters like the Grilled Fusion Wraps (all $6.95). My pick was the Chicken Curry Grilled Fusion Wrap with lettuce, tomatoes, mayo, raisons, celery and red peppers, and I was pleased. Floridians can get a healthy dose of what keeps surfers in business. Fish tacos have never been my thing, but I’ve got to hand it to the architect and writer turned restaurateur and chef, the ‘The South Bay ($3) is a keeper. Greaseless but tasty, the grilled MahiMahi smothered in Pico de Gallo and signature sour cream (calorie counters can beg off the sour cream), chock full of cabbage, this dish delivers an inexpensive healthy boost. ‘Fearlessof-fat’ diners will also welcome South Bay’s beer battered deep fried twin ($3). Healthy to a fault is The Shorty ($3) Tangy grilled shrimp, shredded

lettuce, and avocado topped with pico de gallo. When I was living in the land of Mexican cuisine, I dined almost every morning on machacha and eggs. Here, The Land Lover ($2.50) provides a look into what made me what I am today (whatever that is). Seasoned shredded beef, lettuce served with the pico de gallo & cilantro sour cream. Add some jalapenos and you’ll know why we love the west coast. And, since they offer beer and wine, it’s the perfect place to kick back, munch on fresh fried tortillas with limitless salsa, have a few tacos, and drink till you see the side wall’s painted wave mural start to sway.

Lessons from my newborn about proper nutrition Did you know that you can learn a lot about proper eating by observing SHONDELLE SOLOMON-MILES the eating FITNESSCOLUMN habits of newborns, and even young children for that matter? Here’s what I recently realized during one of my 5–weekold daughter’s 3 a.m. feeding sessions: 1. Newborns eat every 3 hours like clockwork. Nope ...don’t have to worry about babies skipping breakfast, or any meal for that matter, and if you haven’t heard 3-4 hour meal frequency is one of the best ways to turbo-charge metabolism and control cravings. 2. Newborns stop eating when they are full. It doesn’t matter how tasty the milk is or even how much is available, when a baby’s belly is full, the baby stops eating. 3. Babies are very good at differentiating physical hunger form emotional hunger, and they eat STRICTlY to satisfy physical hunger. It doesn’t matter what a baby is FEELING in the moment, if they aren’t hungry, they will not eat. So what are the lessons you can learn about healthy eating habits from a newborn. 1. You are born with an internal clock that lets you know EXACTLY when you should eat. By the

way, 3-4 hours are not just some arbitrary guidelines to make eating ‘chorelike’, that is approximately how long it takes to digest a meal (assuming we do not over or under eat.) 2. You are born with an innate understanding of HOW MUCH you should eat to meet the PHYSICAL demands of your body. If you are in tune with your body and really LISTEN to the signals it sends you, you will never need to measure your food or count calories again. 3. You are born with an innate ability to differentiate between physical and emotional hunger. Emotions serve many purposes in our lives, none of which include, determining when, what or how much you should eat. The purpose of food, my friends, is to satisfy our body’s physical needs, not our emotional ones. opening June 7. A public reception and awards presentation for the Center’s LEGO® Creation Challenge will be held at 1 p.m. Sun., Aug. 10. Prizes for “Most Creative,” “Most Colorful” and “Most Complex” will be awarded in four categories: ages 6 to 10, ages 11 to 17, ages 18 and up, and teams of any age. Entries must be original works constructed of genuine LEGO® bricks, elements and pieces, without the use of kits, and may not exceed 36 × 36 × 36 inches. Entries must be brought to the Center, secured and ready to be displayed, between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. Wed., Aug. 6. An official registration form is available at the Center or on its website. The competition is open to the first 50 entries, with additional pieces accepted if space permits. All accepted entries will be on display in the Center’s galleries Aug. 8-10. Each contestant and a guest will receive complimentary admission to the Center during the LEGO® Creation Challenge exhibition. Hart said the competition provides a “natural opportunity” to foster appreciation of “The Art of the Brick” exhibit through a community-based activity. While Sawaya’s art serves a public purpose, his LEGO sculptures symbolize a private journey. “Mask” “These works are January 2008 29” x 71” x 24” very personal to me, since they reflect my growth as an artist as I strove to discover my creative identity,” he said. “The museum exhibit is accessible because it engages the child in all of us while simultaneously illuminating sophisticated and complex concepts.” Photo credit: Brickartist.com

Hart said Sawaya’s followers are as intrigued by the man – an unlikely artist who left the law to build a career out of LEGOS – as they are by his creations. “His story has absolutely captivated people,” Hart said. “I think it’s also inspiring for kids, that they could turn a passion into something that could similarly be a success.” Exhibition hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at 1650 Harrison St. Admission is $7 for adults; $4 for students, seniors and children ages 4 to 13; and free to Center members and children under 4. Share your life and community: host a foriegn exchange student International Exchange students arrive in August If you’ve ever thought about welcoming an exchange student into your home and family, now’s the time to learn more. AFS (formerly the American Field Service), the leading international high school student exchange program, needs families to host high school students for an academic year or six months. Students arrive in August. All kinds of families can host-two-parent households with young children or teenagers, single-parent families, families with adopted children, foster parents, as well as couples and single people who do not have children or who have grown children. One of the most important characteristics of a host family is being eager and excited to share your life and activities while providing the same kind of care, support, and comfort as

you would to your own child. AFS students come from more than 40 countries and represent many different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Local AFS volunteers enroll students in high school and support students and their families to help both gain the most from their experience. In addition to host families, AFS needs people who are interested in becoming volunteer liaisons to work locally with families and their hosted students. Anyone interested in learning more about hosting or volunteering with AFS should visit www.afs.org/ usa/hostfamily or call 1-800-AFSINFO. AFS Intercultural Programs/ USA is a nonprofit, 501(c)3 organization. YMCA celebrates opening of new outdoor swimming pool The capital campaign raised more than $1.5 million to help establish the new pool. Additional renovations at the Greater Hollywood YMCA Family Center include a wellness center, spin studio, child watch and additional preschool classrooms, with locker room

renovation currently underway. YMCA of Broward County attributes the success of the new pool opening to the generosity and dedication of the community, its employees, the Broward City Commissioners and a Swim Central Grant of $850,000.

The facility serves more than 6,500 individuals through membership and programs. “We are extremely proud of the YMCA and the positive impact it continues to make on the community,” said Blattner.

The Greater Hollywood YMCA Family Center celebrated a new addition to its growing services and family options, the eagerly awaited new swimming pool. The occasion was highlighted by the appearance of many commissioners and people responsible for bringing the dream of this pool to reality. “There is so much going on today at the Greater Hollywood Family YMCA, as evidenced by all the activity around us,” said Dick Blattner, Hollywood City Commissioner indicating a spinning class in the background, as well as basketball game in the gym and various other classes and sports that are part of the YMCA on a daily basis. Blattner chaired the capital campaign to raise funds for the pool. “The demand for services, programs and facilities is growing, and we are happy to bring the community this state-of-the-art swimming pool.” The new pool is a 25-yard, 6-lane lap pool with a family lagoon. The YMCA of Broward County is dedicated to reducing drowning and to that end, it provides swim lessons and water safety instruction to children at the Hollywood Family Center through its affiliation with SWIM Central. Housed at Broward County Parks and Recreation, SWIM Central has become the County’s chief coordinating agency for water safety instruction and awareness. It maintains the most comprehensive database in Florida, tracking every single swimming pool and program in the county. “Drowning is the leading cause of death in children under the age of 5 in South Florida. This new pool is another element in our on-going mission to reduce and ultimately prevent drowning deaths,” said Sheryl Woods, president and CEO of the YMCA of Broward County. 24
