Hollywood Commission considers internal auditor position BY DAVID VOLZ

Up for discussion dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com at a March commission meeting is whether or not the City’s voters want an internal auditor. The Commission may put the question on the November ballot in response to a report by the Broward Office of the Inspector General discovered misconduct and mismanagement by top Hollywood officials earlier this year. The new office would cost about $450,000. It would include an internal CORRESPONDENT

auditor and an administrative assistant. The internal auditor would report directly to the Commission. Mayor Peter Bober said that an internal auditor would provide a check and balance to the work of the City’s government. He believes it would provide an external look at government. “I think we should let the voters decide this,” he said. Vice Mayor Peter Hernandez who has been critical of the work of the city officials named in the report but he does not want an internal auditor. He

wants city staff to do their work and be honest. “We are creating another layer of bureaucracy." "To stop what happened we better our day-to-day operations. Some people did not do their jobs and we need to make sure they do their jobs,” said Hernandez. “We have been told the cost of the office would be $450,000 but in reality that cost would be much higher and the costs will snowball.” He believes an auditor hired on an outside contract basis should the need arise might have benefit. “We would

bring in an auditor when there is a need for it,” said Hernandez. Other commissioners said they wanted more information before making a decision. They wanted to learn about the experience other cities have had with internal auditors. Hollywood Commission meetings are held first and third Wednesdays of each month, except August, in the City Commission Chambers located at 2600 Hollywood Boulevard.

There's no business, like show business for Hollywood's Snappy Seniors

BY DARLENE PISTOCCHI

COMMUNITY INTEREST CORRESPONDENT darlene@hollywoodgazette.com

If you’re between the ages of 55 and 88, the Snappy Seniors Fun Follies want you! Fun Follies are looking for dancers, singers, musicians, comedians, artists and poets. Whether you’ve been in show business for years and now returning to your first love, or you’ve always dreamed about being on stage but never made it, now’s the time to show ‘em what you’ve got. “Every one has a talent and we encourage them to use it,” says Edina McGrath, director, producer, choreographer, costume designer and casting director for the Fun Follies shows. “Our motto is - we don’t retire, we refire!” The Snappy Seniors Fun Follies are a group of seniors who love life and want to share and bring joy to others. “We all volunteer our time and our talents,” says

Edina, “which helps to make it possible for many families, children, teens and seniors to enjoy the activities at the YMCA that they could not enjoy otherwise." Most members of the group are from Hollywood, Pembroke Pines, Hallandale, Dania and Ft. Lauderdale and all are members of the Greater Hollywood YMCA Silver Sneakers program designed for active older adults.

Edina joined the Silver Sneakers of the YMCA after she retired as a Cruise Director of 25 years for Carnival Cruise Lines. “I danced with the Gwen Mahler Dancers, Dancing Mothers of Miami, Miami Rockets, Rene Godin Dancers and Ziegfield,” recalls McGrath. And now, at the vibrant age of 88, she puts all of her time into volunteering for the show.

The theme of this year's show is ‘America The Beautiful / the Good Old USA’ intended to "stir our hearts and remind us that we live in the greatest country in the world," said Edina. “I trust in my Lord to put in my heart the theme for each show.” This is the fifth year the show is produced. Anyone from ages 55-88 can audition. As casting director, Edina will spend time with you, listen to you and let you share about yourself and your talent – so no excuses! It’s time to take the stage. Rehearsals are every Monday and Wednesday at 11:45 a.m., with some Tuesday night rehearsals, in Studio West at the YMCA in Hollywood. The cast usually runs between 25 - 30 people and the show attracts approximately 300 to 400 people. This year's show date is set for May 22, at the Greater Hollywood YMCA. For more information, contact Edina at 954-987-7699.

A look back with Chester Hardenburg, Jr. BY TOM OLSEN

SPECIAL TO THE GAZETTE

Hollywood resident Chester 'Chet' Hardenburg, Jr. has lived in the North Lake area for 25 years. Born August 22, 1923 in Corning, New York, his parents, Chester and Lea McConnell, long awaited a visit from the stork and later in life Chester, Jr. came along. He had no siblings or cousins and was the light of the lives of his parents, aunts and uncles. Hardenburg attended local schools and graduated from Corning Free Academy in 1941, where he was a member of the school band playing trumpet and violin. His next stop was Allegany College in Meadville, Pennsylvania. "My second and third grade teacher was Miss Gardner. She was also my beloved aunt who I was especially close to," recalls Hardenburg. "She gave me strength and no nonsense discipline that has remained with me for my life. She and her husband had no children and they lived on a farm with no electricity. Each summer they invited me to spend time with them and I learned about farm life." When asked about life during Great Depression years of 1929-1939, Hardenburg says, "I don't remember the hard times. All of my family and friends were in the same situation and everyone helped one another."

In 1942, after one year of college and the onset of World War II duty called and he joined the US Army. After two years of service he returned to Allegany College and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting. Chet attributes his motivation to succeed to "the discipline that came from my family and my church early in life." After graduating college he and a friend started up a taxi service. But as time passed by he came to the realization that the taxi business was not for him. Recalling a time when Navy recruiters came to Allegany College prompted his return to military service and in 1948 returned to military service in the US Navy. His early pilot training paid off which let to an assignment in the left seat as Captain. While in the Navy he served in many parts of the world including Iceland, Greenland, Alaska, Hawaii and Great Britain. During his time serving in the Navy the Navy was flying hurricane reconnisance missions. The timing was right and in the early 1950s he transitioned to become a hurricane hunter flying thirteen missions out of Opa Locka. Forty-seven of Hardenburg's adult years were shaped in ways by his flying experiences. "Flying to me was a joy more than a job or a career," said Hardenburg. "I never saw combat. I had friends who were killed in air collisions while in combat and that was sobering."

After retirement from the Navy in 1968 Hardenburg lived on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, flying for Hawaiian Air Tours. He later returned to South Florida and was hired over the telephone - sight unseen - as a captain for Mackey Airlines. He flew with them until their demise thirteen years later after which he joined fledging airline Aero Coach and met his wife.. "I met Louise working at Aero Coach Airlines back in the 1980s. I fell for her voice over the telephone when I would call the office. I took her to lunch for one month steadily but not dinner. I felt I was much older than her and

thought nothing would come of it. We were married in 1989." What advice does Hardenburg have for youth in 2016 about planning for their future? "Get a good education. Follow your desires. Work hard. Consider a military career. Proper guidance, discipline for the young and respect for one another are the ways." Tom Olsen is a photographer and historian living and working in Hollywood. Chet's wife Louise Hardenburg contributed to this story.

HOLLYWOOD POLICE

Hollywood Police honored for mentoring elementary school students A group of about 40 CORRESPONDENT Hollywood dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com police officers came together to establish a mentoring program for Hollywood public elementary schools. Recently the Broward County School Board recognized the officers by naming them the Mentorship Program of the Year. The recommendation came from Hollywood Park Elementary School, however Hollywood police officers are mentoring students in all Hollywood elementary schools. The program was envisioned by Police Chief Tomas Sanchez who has a passion for young people. He asked Sgt. Chris Boyd to coordinate the program. “It is important that we reach at risk kids; they are the future of the city. I want to keep kids out of crime and the children love to spend time with police officers,” said Sanchez. Lt. Selina Hightower works as a mentor in the program. “I have a passion for kids and this is something I do. People invested in me and mentoring is a way to give back to the community,” said Hightower. She has also taken her mentee to movies and to the police department for 'Take Your Child to Work Day.' Sgt. Nicola Williams works with another young girl. “She is in the second grade and comes from a large family. I have helped her with her reading and math and want to keep her on track and be a role model for her.” Officer Lisa Spagenski also mentors a second grade girl. “She is one of six children and has not received much attention. She has a twin. I have been helping her with math. I am giving her needed attention.” Officer Rosalynn Lahara also enjoys mentoring a young boy in the program. “I do this because I want to help young people and give back to the community. I will be a part of his life until he graduates from high school,” she said. Lt. Derik Alexander has been working with a fourth grade boy. “I discuss real life situations with him. I want to help turn him into a young man,” he said. The officers who have participated in the program love it and hope to continue it. Their interactions encourage young people to become good citizens and develop positive feelings toward law enforcement.

Start-up church aims to create 'God's blended family' By Carol Collins New City Fellowship, a start-up church focusing on the Hollywood/Hallandale area, is offering free workshops on a variety of topics to the community. New City Fellowship is a Biblically-oriented church pursuing the vision to be “God’s blended family”. “South Florida is incredibly diverse, but still somewhat separated racially, linguistically, and socioeconomically" said Pastor John Houmes. "We hope to be a place that brings down those walls through a weekly multi-cultural worship celebration.” Pastor Houmes, who lived on Hollywood Beach as a young boy, is also excited about the church’s workshops. "We hold to conservative Christian beliefs, but we want to serve all of the people in our community, regardless of their beliefs,” he says. Previous workshops have focused on communication for couples, and a series on what love looks like. On March 6, family therapist Joyce A. Lacombe will present “Parenting in a Changing Culture,” and on March 13,

the love of Jesus.” New City Fellowship meets on Sunday evenings at the Foster Park Community Center, 609 NW 6th Ave in Hallandale. The workshops are presented from 4:30 to 5:30 pm on selected Sundays. Attendees are welcome to stay after the workshop for a light potluck dinner at 5:30 and church service from 6 to 7 pm. Child care is available; please call 954-609-6922. For more information about New City Fellowship, visit them on Facebook (@ NewCityHH), or the web (www. hhchurchplant.com), or email NewCitySFL@gmail.com.

"...we want to serve all of the people in our community, regardless of their beliefs.”

Pastor John Stevenson, a professor at several local colleges, will discuss “Resurrection and the Bible: Could Jesus have really (really) risen from the dead?” Topics for future workshops are being planned, and Pastor Houmes is taking suggestions. “We’re open to ideas from the community about topics they care about. We want our church to be a place where people can learn about God, be part of a blended church family, do deeds of mercy and justice in the Hollywood/Hallandale area, and experience

food professionals who were sharing samples of wine. “This is a nice event,” said Alpern. Larry Joe Miller of Larry Joe Miller Art Gallery and School offered painting lessons to children. “I was showing kids that painting is fun,” he said. And many children enjoyed the chance to paint. There was also a classic car show. People could see various well restored cars and talk with their owners. Frank Ardillo brought his 1953 Chevrolet truck that he restored. “I love this truck and I enjoy driving it. This is a fun event. County Commissioner Beam Furr participated in Party on the J and liked what he said. “I love this event. It brings the business community together with residents,” said Furr. Vice Mayor Peter Hernandez and Govea Hernandez had a booth showing Govea Trucking a business they operate. “This was a great community event. The weather was perfect,” he said.

New mural at Radius Garage expands Downtown Hollywood's street art scene

T

he street art scene in Downtown Hollywood continues to grow as contemporary outdoor murals pop up on the exterior of various buildings as part of the Downtown Hollywood Mural Project (DHMP). To date, 18 vibrant installations are on view throughout the Downtown community. This month multi-media artists Monica and Tasha Lopez De Victoria, aka the TM Sisters, are bringing their talent to Downtown Hollywood’s Radius Garage, located at 251 N. 19th Ave. One of four artists to install an exterior mural in the Downtown area this year, this is the first time the Miami-born duo will showcase their work in Hollywood. The sisters will be painting a large-scale mural of a sunset. The installation began on Feb. 8 and is expected to take several

weeks to complete. The TM Sisters’ work spans mixed media collage to site-specific interactive video performance and everything in between — installations, fashion, social experiments, events and performances. “We’re experimenting all the time; we love to play and collaborate,” Monica told ArtStreet Miami. “We balance each other off.” Described by the Miami New Times as “techno tropical,” their work is immersive and colorful and influenced by South Florida’s landscape — cultural presence, energy, weather and its colors. Voted “Miami’s Best Artist” by the Miami New Times in 2012, the TM Sisters have shown in exhibitions both locally and internationally, including the Serpentine Gallery in London,

the Second Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art and Performa ’07 in New York. Their work has been featured in The New York Times, The Guardian, Vogue Italia, STEP Inside Design, L’official and on the cover of ARTNews for its 2007 “25 Trendsetters” feature article. The TM sisters display their color chart + rendering of the new ‪mural at the Radius Garage (251 N. 19th Ave.) “Street art is not only bringing creativity, aesthetic beauty, and civic and ethnic identity, but also revitalization to Downtown Hollywood. We’re proud to have the TM Sisters be a part of that; after all, they do great work,” said Jill C. Weisberg, project manager/arts specialist for the Hollywood Florida CRA. “Taking something that is so

non-descript as the Radius Garage and turning it into something people are going to be excited to see is talent. Monica and Tasha, along with the other artists who have been involved in the project, are beautifying the city in unexpected ways.” Launched in August 2012 by the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), the Downtown Hollywood Mural Project is the largest walkable mural project in Broward County. DHMP is a key element in the CRA’s arts-focused initiative to enhance diversity and vibrancy in the Downtown area and features renowned local, national and international artists. Are you an aspiring artist? Downtown Hollywood has a home for you! The Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) in collaboration with Artspace Projects, Inc. is conducting a major online survey of artists, arts organizations, and creative businesses in South Florida to determine the size and nature of the market for an Artspace affordable live/work/create project planned for Downtown Hollywood. The eight-week survey period runs through March 28, 2016. Artists, musicians and other creative individuals are encouraged to fill out the survey at HollywoodArtspaceSurvey.org. Artspace, the nation’s leading developer for the arts, will use the survey to identify the types and number of spaces needed by Downtown Hollywood artists, and the amenities and special features that are of interest to them. The results of the survey will help determine the size of the market for affordable live/work housing, studio and work space of various kinds. The survey is the second phase of a scope of work that began last year when an Artspace team conducted a preliminary feasibility visit in Downtown Hollywood. The survey results will help identify the project concept and site selection for affordable space for artists to live, work and
