letter to the community... March, they say, come in like a lion and out like a lamb, referring to the weather and the coming of warmer, sunnier days ahead. But that doesn't really matter to us, here in South Florida, where it's always warm and sunny. So lucky us, we get to focus

on the more exciting and fun things, so for us, this March, along with our regular coverage of the news and the people that make up our wonderful City, we at the Hollywood Gazette are focusing on Art. Lately, we're hearing a lot about the resurgence of Hollywood as the Art Hub of the region. But many people here say it's never been anything but! We had a long chat about just that, with the management team at the Art and Culture Center/

Hollywood, which has been winning awards and bringing exciting, innovative art to City for over 40 years. Read more about the history and the future of the Center, where Art has never left. Jeff Jacobs continues our new, ongoing coverage of the Hollywood music scene with a story about local musicians Mitch Herrick & the Homegrown Sinners. Our history column tells the tale of old Hollywood artists and art advocates Herb and Gert Tulk. And if all this talk of art inspires you, we wrap it up with 10

ways that you too can without leaving your own city. We hope these articles inspire you to bring out your own inner artist, get your hands dirty, and make Hollywood, and the world, an even more beautiful place. Enjoy the issue.

Feeling Hot-Hot-Hot at Hollywood Hot Glass

When Brenna Baker Brown, a native of Corning New York, went to work at the Corning Glass Company at age 14, like a lot of people in her town, she knew she was artistic and she knew she wanted to work in glass. But she didn’t even dream that one day she would become the proprietor of one of Hollywood, Florida’s hottest (please pardon the pun) art workshops. Since 2013, Hollywood Hot Glass, located in the Visual Arts Pavilion in the ArtsPark at Young Circle, has welcomed thousands of visitors who, in just about 20 minutes and with the help of a highly-trained instructor/artist, create unique and beautiful glass sculptures. Beginners can choose from ten beautiful items, while more experienced students can sign on to tackle larger projects. Anyone can watch the free glass blowing demonstration or shop in the on-site gallery. And if it’s cold outside, just come on in and warm up! Hollywood Hot Glass also offers a new service, Cremation Creations, where a client can create a piece containing the ashes of a loved one or pet, to keep them near you forever. Getting your Market Share at L/Mercado Studios

Maybe Dorandy Mercado was fated to own some kind of market just by virtue of her name, Mercado. But she never intended it to be that way. She is an artist, and was not interested in business. Then she and her friend Laura Gasper, another artist with whom she worked at a pottery studio, decided to look for flexible studio space where they could expand their artistic endeavors. What they found were other people who needed the same thing, and no places where it already existed. So they decided to create it, and L/ Mercado Studios was born. Three years later, the business is flourishing. Mercado stressed that the studio is appropriate for all age groups, stating that she’s worked with artists as young as 3 and some over 70, and that anyone, artist or novice, is welcome to come in and take a class and learn. Go for the Gold at Ana Esther Designs

Here’s a little secret you may not know: Right behind Hollywood Hot Glass in the Visual Arts Pavilion in the ArtsPark at Young Circle, behind closed doors, there are two very talented artists at work, like little elves hidden in a tree. Behind the first door is Esther Soued, known an award-winning metalsmith and jewelry designer, who is actually the official Head Jeweler for the City of Hollywood. Since the opening of the park, she’s been working in the metals studio, creating beautiful pieces of wearable art in precious and base metals, giving group classes and private lessons to budding and experienced artists, preparing exhibitions for galleries and museums around the country, and selling her one-of-a-kind designs to locals and visitors alike. And she’s ready to teach you how to create a metal piece “like in a store” from beginning to end, she said. There’s a basic series of group classes, as well as more advanced lessons available. However, she stresses, some finished pieces, like beaded necklaces and lariats, can be completed in one class.

Go in and see what she, and you, can create. Ana Esther Designs The Visual Arts Pavilion at Young Circle ArtsPark • 305 450 5125 anaestherdesigns.com

Jen Clay, the new Young Circle artist in residence, combines textiles, Claymation and animation to create videos, performances, costumed creatures, art installations and much much more. ike so many of my stories for the Hollywood Gazette, I start off writing about one topic and end up finding out that the real story is hiding behind my original one. This is one of those times. The story begins with a beautiful home that once stood in the area now known as Holland Park, at the foot of Johnson Street at the Intracoastal. If you’ve ever put a boat into the water in North Lake, or headed over for a picnic under the trees, you know the spot. And if you’ve ever enjoyed the peace and serenity of Holland Park, you should know about Herb Tulk and his wife, Gert. The home under discussion was built in 1925 and sat just west of the main entrance to the park, at the base of West Lake facing north. The address was shown as Johnson Street, but the lot was actually at 935 Grant Street. According to an article in the old Hollywood Sun-Tattler, the house

Herb Tulk and his wife, Gert. was built by Herb Tulk’s aunt Julia Hitchcock in 1925, with an addition put in about ten years later. It was a handsome home in the typical Spanish Mediterranean style, complete with fireplace, arched windows and a beautiful porch facing West Lake. Mr. Tulk inherited the home after Julia’s death sometime in the ‘60s. Ar-

ticles from the Sun-Tattler state that Julia Hitchcock drowned in West Lake. No explanation was offered as to just how an individual could drown in a lake that is only waist deep at high tide, but that’s a story for another issue. Although this area north of Johnson and east of 13th Avenue had

been platted with individual lots and street names, it was never developed, so this beautiful house stood alone for decades in the wilderness that eventually became West Lake Park. This was the only house that was ever built north of Johnson Street and east of 15th Avenue. Had the proposed development come to this particular area, this would have been one of the finest lots to be had in West Lake. Surrounded by nature, it is said that Mr. Tulk talked of seeing foxes, panthers, and raccoons on his property, and he enjoyed fishing from his front lawn. There is no mention of sand fleas or mosquitoes but you can just imagine. Mr. Tulk and his wife were both also artists and it turns out, activists for the arts community. According to an article by staff writer Marla Williams in the Sun-Sentinel in October 1987, Herb, a painter and art restorer, and Gert, a sculptor, moved to Hollywood from a small town in New

Hollywood to Ban Electric Scooters Hollywood Commissioners REPORTER dtv@gate.net are concerned about the possibility that dockless electronic scooters could cause injuries to residents and visitors to the city, citing a rise in accidents in Ft. Lauderdale where the scooters have become popular. During a recent meeting, the commissioners agreed to ban the electric scooters from city sidewalks and rights of way. The final vote will take place in March. Meanwhile, the Florida Legislature is considering legislation that would prevent cities from regulating electric scooters. Commissioner Kevin Biederman voted against the ban. He believes it goes too far. He also said it might not be possible to enforce it. Commissioner Caryl Shuham said, “We want to be proactive about the ban to prevent scooter accidents and make sure local rules are in place.” Vice Mayor Traci Callari said she BY DAVID VOLZ

The Cops, the Homeless Family, the Kind Hotel Manager and a Fresh Start in Hollywood BY ROBIN KERR DRULARD COMMUNITY CORRESPONDENT robin@hollywoodgazette.com

A few weeks ago, CBS Miami aired a piece called “Community Comes Together To Help Homeless Family Of 7 In Hollywood,” starring some of our favorite people: Downtown Hollywood Police Officers Dwayne Chung and Anthony Truntz, and Circ Hotel General Manager Kara Lundgren. These three generous Hollywood citizens met a local family in need and, rather than looking away, they went out of their ways to help. The Hollywood Gazette sat down with them to learn more about how it all happened. Hollywood Gazette: So how did you meet this family? Officer Anthony Truntz: About a month ago, I was working security at Attucks Middle School, in Liberia, and I was talking with the security lady that monitors the front gate when she pointed out Mr. Jean walking with three young kids and she told me that they were a family of seven and that they were homeless. I had a translator come out because he only spoke Creole. We started asking questions, and we found out that they were currently living in the back of a church on Dixie Highway. They’d only been in the country for a short time. Officer Dwayne Chung: Since about October. And before that, they had been waiting for a long time for their sponsorship papers to come through. AT: They had been staying with Mr. Jacques’s sister and somehow they all got kicked out of the apartment, and then at a motel for a few days, then they got kicked out of there — they probably didn’t have enough money — somehow they went to the church which was being renovated. They were staying in a back room, they had only bathrooms and sinks in the back, no showers, and they had some supplies but they didn’t have that much, and they didn’t know how much longer they would be able to stay at the church. So we started rally14

ing the troops. DC: We are both Downtown NTLs (Neighborhood Team Leaders) and we work a lot with the Broward Outreach Center shelter and the Jubilee Food Kitchen. AT: And we are both on the Hollywood Police Department Homeless Task Force, part of the multi-agency Homeless Task Force, run by the Broward Sheriff’s Office. We go to meetings once a month and talk about new ways to help, and how to get resources, and we share all the info. DC: Ms.Kara was very helpful, and the Jubilee Center was very helpful. First, we took them to meet the Homeless Task Force, to see about finding them some housing, and then to Hispanic Unity of South Florida, who helped them sign up for Medicaid and some SNAP food benefits through the state. AT: After that, I took them for lunch a couple of times, me and Officer Chung, and then Miss Kara got involved again and she put out the word for help for the family and she got them a bunch of supplies. DC: And we got them clothes from Ju-

bilee, and food from the food pantry — once every seven days they are allowed to pick up a box of food for the family. And we let them know that if they wanted to, they could eat every day for free — but that’s not the greatest environment for the kids… AT: At the place, they are now, they’re lucky — if they’re not at school, they get fed three times a day, so they don’t have to worry about that for now. DC: They will not go hungry. AT: So they started getting different things, and Officer Chung has a friend that donated a bunch of Publix gift cards that we gave them for food and stuff, and we ended up getting them all kinds of things — even the Executive director of Jubilee, LeAnna Vasquez, got involved. She went out to Walmart and got them some stuff on her own. Anyway, we just got to work and kept tabs on the family, and they have my cell phone and when they have a question I would try to get somebody to translate. And lately they’ve been communicating by phone and they have some app that translates and lately, the main thing we’ve got going on is that

Ms. Kara was able to give them both employment! HG: Ms Kara, you’re on: Kara Lundgren: Yes, well, these guys, who I’ve been working with a lot, called me one afternoon and started asking about housing, well, that was the first immediate need, but more than that, what I have is the ability to find them work. I have jobs. So we met the family, and they’re great! We have quite a bit of Haitian staff, so they were able to really open up, to make some pretty good connections and to see that there are a lot of people to help them. They were able to see that there is so much they can do and be a part of. And we were able to get them jobs at the hotel. Jacques started about three weeks ago, he’s stewarding, he’s doing great! And his wife, Ghislaine, she’s a school teacher by trade — she has the nicest penmanship I’ve ever seen! — is actually starting today. So he’s been here three weeks, he has full-time work, with benefits after 60 days like all associates, and she’ll be working in front of the house

as a server assistant. He speaks to me every single day in English now, we work with him every day. They are the most polite, kindest people you’ve ever met, and he works really really hard. And they have five really cute kids. DC: They’re 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15. KL: They have a good, solid family unit. So starting tonight she’s here, part-time because they have small children at home so they have to work opposite schedules — which is fine, we have plenty of things that can be done at all hours here — and what I would really like would be for us to help her get back to school, so that she can be a teacher here in the US, for which we have a lot of need. Hollywood Gazette: So where are they now? DC: They’re living at a temporary shelter at the Homeless Assessment Center, the North HAC, in Pompano. And they’re now in line to get permanent housing. AT: Now we have to wait and see how the system plays out. HG: How does someone get into the system? AT: We started by having them meet with the task force, getting them interviewed to see what their needs are. Then they’re put on the list for housing according to their situation. DC: We think the Jeans will get a little priority because they have young children; the state doesn’t want children on the street. AT: So as soon as they got the temporary housing, we picked up a truck from the HPD motor pool, took it to the church, loaded it up, drove them to Pompano and moved them in. They were assigned a social worker to set them up, help them adjust, change the kids’ schools and get working on getting them in to a permanent home. Their future looks bright. DC: Very much so. But, we really haven’t spoken much about Ms. Kara, and I do have to let you know about this, but Ms. Kara did provide a lot of assistance for this family. I mean, she has a huge network of people who supplied food and clothes and school supplies. And then the jobs. That is so very, very important. AT: The kids even got toys, too, from Ms. Kara. If you saw the family now,

ment, These officers saw a need; somebody reached out to them and they were able to place the pieces together. Officer Truntz delivers much-needed help to the Jean family.

they’re so very happy to be there, there’s nothing but smiles. Really. They actually text me every day, sometimes the kids get ahold of the phone and text me weird stuff! HG: How can anyone help, this family, or the situation in general? KL: It’s one person at a time. For the Jeans, it was important for them to be a family. They believe in the family unit, they wanted to stay together and our goal was to figure out a way to make that happen. That’s their core value system, that’s the core value systems of the officers, that’s who they are, all we can do is help develop and grow that, and keep spreading those things. It’s paying it forward. These people, I am sure because I know them now, they will do the same thing, they will help somebody else. AT: If everyone can just give a little bit, do a little bit. DC: One person at a time. Every little bit helps. KL: It’s just about everybody taking the next step. There is a whole task force, through the city. These officers, being on the task force, they’ve been out there, gathering data, working with the BSO and the whole team, they knew the steps. We’ve already done it and we can do it again. And it changed our community. Really, everybody has to be kind. It’s about doing what you can in your own community. In your own environ-

There are a lot of people that need help, be it the homeless, or the working poor. but there are a lot of opportunities to give back. We live in a very giving community, so it’s just about reaching out for what you believe in. Whether it’s your church’s resource center or a domestic abuse center or outreach center or your children’s schools. Each of the schools in the public school system knows which families might have needs and they will share it if you ask them. The county has a huge Homeless Rehousing program going on right now. They were able to move all of the homeless out of the tent city in downtown Fort Lauderdale. Hollywood and Pompano are next. There are enough negative things

Baby

in the world; we don’t need to focus on them. We need to focus on what we can change, and on the positive we can do. It’s just about reaching out and taking the next step. ---If you’re experiencing homelessness or in danger of becoming homeless, call the Homeless Helpline at 954 563 HELP (4357), or you can email Officer Dwayne Chung at dchung@hollywoodfl.org. If you have a property that you would like to rent to the city to house the homeless, or you would like to make a donation, or if you have any other questions or ideas about how you can help, please contact Barbara Lawson, the Social Services Coordinator for the City of Hollywood. She can be reached at 954-924-2952 or via email at blawason@hollywoodfl.org. If you have a unit to rent, you will receive compensation.

LOCAL BAND

REVIEW

Mitch Herrick & the Homegrown Sinners

A

t Shenanigan’s their menu strength is consistency and variety. People who frequent either location understand they are walking into a business that truly is… what all the corporate fern bars have always aspired to be. The Neighborhood Bar & Grill. Kind of like Cheers. Our own neighborhood watering hole serves a broad selection of tasty bar fare including great burgers and wings, which guests are likely to consider “comfort food.” I know I did. I also hear a rumor that they will cook up your fresh catch if you ask! Wait-staff at their Westside location (in the Park Sheridan Plaza) is energetic and friendly. Likely to call you honey, and I don’t see anything wrong with that. Mitch Herrick & the Homegrown Sinners are also consistently pleasing in their execution of a wide range of covers by artists that also appealed to a wide range of fans. Tom Petty, Stevie Wonder, Matchbox 20, Pink Floyd, Dave Matthews and more graced their first set. Their musicianship was beyond competent, and though they had a new keyboard player, they all seemed at ease working with one another. They were having fun, and the crowd feeds on that. Herrick, who used to co-lead the local original, Americana band Sosos, is now fronting a band that plays a really fun selection of everyone’s favorites. The mix is eclectic, certainly not just “classic rock.” I sat down with Mitch to chat a bit when they finished the first set. We talked about a LOT of different topics. Here’s a sampling. JJ: So, you left Sosos where you were creating a lot of original music, and also as a band, creating some buzz those last few years. I know you wanted to “get off the road” to spend more time with family, what else has appealed to you about this transition? Mitch: When I decided to take the business end of playing music every bit as seriously as the creative end, a few things happened. One, of course, was my excitement about the op-

write? Mitch: I’m still writing, though not as much. But when I do, my inspiration is always my wife and child. They mean the world to me. JJ: And has being in recovery had any noticeable impact on your creativity? Mitch: Well, one thing I’ve learned from being in recovery is true gratitude. I love and appreciate every moment, every day. Therefore I’m usually pretty happy! For me, that really puts a curb on a lot of my previous writing muse, as I can’t write so well from a “happy place.” You know?

portunity to be close to home with my new bride and young child. This desire to stay close to home lead me to start creating a large network of local musicians, that I had never had really cultivated previously. JJ: And what was the end-goal of creating this pool of talent on “speed-dial?” Mitch: To be able to plow through the local scene and gig 6 nights a week, you need to know a LOT of covers. There is not too much room for originals if you’re attempting to be a full-time working musician here. I needed to grow my pool of talented players for two reasons. Learning SO much new material and only have access to a few players… all the time limits your ability to change your sound from tune to tune. It limits your scope of influence. Also, at the stage of life, I and most of my fellow band-mates find ourselves in, it’s nearly impossible to just put together a “band of brothers” like you would in college. Everyone has their own lives. Work, family and possibly other bands they play with. Therefore I wanted 20 or 30 guys who were good musicians, nice to be around and could learn a few sets of material with

minimal rehearsal time. So, I needed this “band” to not just be 4 or 5 guys. It needed to be much bigger. It’s been a blast playing with so many new musicians. JJ: Your keyboard player was also holding down the “bass line” I see…

JJ: I do, certainly. We look at the great song writers, painters, authors of history and so many were/are tortured souls. That’s the muse for most. Mitch, thanks for sharing your music and your time with me! Mitch: Thank you! Hope to see you soon. Mitch: Perfect example. Our bass player had to cancel pretty late in the week for tonight. I knew we had an amazing keyboard player that was sitting in with us anyway, and he said the bass line was no problem. HOLLYWOOD BIZNEWS ON THE BALLOT FOR GO BOND, THERE WILL BE 3 QUESTIONS:

On March 12th, Hollywood residents will have a chance to invest in the future of their community! The Board of Directors of the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, after participating in several presentations from City staff and meeting with neighborhood and civic associations, voted unanimously to support the GO Bond. The opportunity to make such an impact on our community cannot be ignored. In return for their investments, residents will see drastic changes in their neighborhoods, their parks, golf courses and a brand new Police Headquarters with all the technology needed to make their job safer and easier. At this time, in the history of Hollywood, residents will benefit from the finalized Inter Local Agreement between Broward County and the City of Hollywood, redirecting some of the Hollywood Beach CRA TIF dollars to neighborhood improvements. Those dollars combined with the GO Bond money will make Hollywood sparkle again! Our City is old and it needs a lot of things.

The first one will ask if you will support a $78 million Bond for Public Safety Improvements including the new Police station, new technology, new Advanced Life Support Fire Rescue trucks and equipment; The second one will ask if you will support a $64 Million Bond for Improvements to City parks, recreational facilities, open spaces, nature trails, Golf and Cultural Facilities; The third one will ask if you will support a $23 million Bond exclusively for neighborhood improvements, traffic calming, tidal flooding mitigation, sea walls, sound walls, landscaping etc… When you vote YES, Yes and Yes… You get all that for minimal investment. If your house or business’ taxable value is $165,000. you will pay $8.83 per month ($106 per year). Your property value will greatly increase thanks to all these improvements to the overall curb appeal of our neighborhoods! This is one of those rare occasions when civic and neighborhood organizations partner up with the Chamber and we all support this opportunity for the Greater Good of Hollywood! The Chamber sincerely believes that this investment will bring successful businesses to the area, create many jobs and enhance the quality of life for everyone in Hollywood. Also, keep in mind that there will be a 15 people Oversight Committee who will make sure the dollars are spent according to the plan. Ten of them will be representatives of different civic or business organizations. This is the right time for us to do this.

All skill levels can learn to draw and paint, she noted, in progressive classes that run in six-week sessions in small class sizes. Parties are also a big part of the business, some with wine(!), as well as monthly open art workshops. Right now, registration has just opened for Harris’s Creative Arts Summer Camp, and, she noted, it’s already filling up with a lot of repeat clients. Get Blinged Out at C by Me Mother and daughter teachers Judy Klahr and Jessica Sanchez loved teaching but missed doing the fun stuff that you don’t get to do when you work in the school system. So five years ago, they created a business that would let them teach and give them the freedom of being on their own. They launched C by Me with the goal to give kids Fun Days Off.

C by Me — which stands for Created by Me — offers after-school art classes on Thursdays, but where they really shine is with their parties and events by appointment and their holiday and “no-school day” camps. Most popular, according to Sanchez, are the Wearable Art Classes, where partygoers get to decorate clothing and accessories with rhinestones, patches and more, complete the project by the end of the event, and then star in a fashion show to show off their creations. A Wearable Art Class was featured on PBS Kidvision, and, teachers that they are, Sanchez and Klahr pepper the instructions with vocabulary and other life lessons. C by Me is filled with many choices of arts and crafts for kids of all ages and interests; you can see a lot of them on their website or speak with the proprietors to create one perfect for you. Best to check with them while the kids are in school though, as they’re usually busy when the kids are off. C By Me 4624 Hollywood Blvd., Ste 203 (954) 926-3636 www.CbyMe.com

Who was Herb Tulk? CONT. from PAGE 6 Hampshire and settled into the home in Holland Park. One night, the Tulks met a group of artists selling paintings from sidewalk stands on Hollywood Boulevard. Surprised to learn that there was nowhere but the sidewalk for the artists to show and sell their work, they began a search for a permanent home for local artists. Little did they know that this search would develop into a lifelong passion. Activists at heart, the Tulks organized protests outside local grocery stores where mass-produced art was being sold, ran for public office, and rallied for a formal countywide Council on the Arts.

"Art is the basis of civilization," Gert is quoted as saying. "It's incredible, no, it's irresponsible more isn't being done to promote the arts here." Over the next few decades, the Tulks continued campaigning for an arts council, and were involved in setting up a non-profit corporation dedicated to building a museum and carving out a place for local artists, by organizing shows and a small gallery, dubbed the Hollywood Art Museum. The Tulks operated the private, non-profit, always moving and changing Hollywood Art Museum from 1962 through at least 1987, when the Sun-Sentinel article was written. They put on shows throughout Broward, financed by private donations and bringing in artists from around the world. Working with a 30

They then moved temporarily to 1843 Hollywood Blvd, a building owned by Home Savings president Tommy Wohl, at the same rent, until the building was demolished. Dave Racaluto, a friend of the couple and vice president of the Museum, was quoted in the article as saying "If you searched for the next 50 years of your life, I don't think you'd find two more dedicated people. I don't think Hollywood would even know how to spell art if it weren't for the Tulks." All this time, the house in Holland Park was a gathering place of bohemian minds and talented artists of the time. Herb and Gert enjoyed this piece of paradise until the late ‘70s when the city decided to expand Holland Park, and the Tulks’ house stood in the way. In 1977, after a lengthy court battle, the city used its power of eminent domain against the Tulks and took the house for the sum of $140,000. Many people in the community were outraged that the city would

take this beautiful house from its wonderful owners and were hoping that the city would at least incorporate this historic structure into the park. Art and Culture Center/Hollywood — At The Center of the So-Called Hollywood Arts Scene “Rebirth” BY ROBIN KERR DRULARD COMMUNITY CORRESPONDENT robin@hollywoodgazette.com

There’s a lot of talk these days about Hollywood becoming the new mecca for the arts in south Florida — just look at all the events at the ArtsPark at Young Circle, The Downtown Hollywood Mural Project, the new galleries popping up around Harrison Street and other spots. But to the people who run the show at the Art and Culture Center/Hollywood, there is no return to Hollywood as the Center of the Arts. “We don’t believe that art ever left the city of Hollywood,” said Joy Satterlee, Executive Director of the Center. “Like every place, all of South Florida is going through a finding period, a transition. But while we may have seen a little bit of a difference in Downtown Hollywood, the Art & Culture Center has always served as a magnet for community interactions, for art exhibitions, and art

education, since it opened in 1975.” Originally, the Art & Culture Center was located at the beach, at 1301 South Ocean Drive, and it moved to its current location, its permanent home, at 1650 Harrison Street, in 1992. There is a fascinating history of the founding and the building itself, which has been designated as a significant historical structure by the state of Florida — The Broward Trust for Historic Preservation honored the Center in 2008 for its stewardship of the Kagey Home. A collaboration of public and private efforts, the Art and Culture Center/ Hollywood remains a 502(c)(3) non-profit organization supported by both government and the community. In 2016, the Center received an ArtsEd Forever! award from the Broward Cultural Division for Exceptional Service & Outstanding Contributions to Arts Education in Broward County. In 2015, the Center was honored as 2-1-1 Broward’s “NonProfit Organization of the Year – Arts”

at the Fifth Annual Non-Profit Academy Awards. While she is adamant that there has always been a strong presence of all the arts here, Satterlee conceded that things may have indeed changed since she first arrived at the Center, in 2002. For one thing, she recalled, there were a lot more galleries in downtown than there are today. “Hollywood has always been a city of the arts,” noted Satterlee. “Mara [Giulianti, former Mayor of Hollywood] had that vision. She was a big supporter of arts and culture, and her vision did come true. But most of the gallerists were renting, and when you’re not your own landlord, when you’re dependent on other people’s property and you have to meet those expenses…well, you have to sell a lot of paintings to pay the rent. We’re presenters of art, and a non-profit, so it’s a very different business model.” Development Director Jeff Rusnak, who, like Satterlee, has been with the Center for many years, concurred. “Hollywood always was a space for local artists in Broward County,” he said, recalling such hubs as Warehouse 57, the Arts Academy and other local businesses on Harrison and the surrounding streets, where people would gather to make, show, perform and collaborate on all kinds of arts — visual, performing, poetry and more. “When Wendy (Glazer) was the executive director, she was one of the preeminent curators in South Florida, and Hollywood always had that reputation, because of the Center and Wendy. If you have a great curator, you attract great artists and that’s what we’re doing here now, with Laura (Laura Marsh, the current Curator of Exhibitions.)“ Rusnak, who has always lived in Plantation, recalled how he would come to Hollywood because that’s where the people who were making art were. “Hollywood was always where the vibe was,” he said. “We never lost it; it just changes over time. Every area finds its niche.” One of the areas that Satterlee feels is contributing to the “new” Hollywood art vibe is that there are more artists actually living here than ever before. “It started in Miami,” she believes. “Many artists and gallerists have been priced out of the market, they’re work-

ing out of their homes, and there’s less brick and mortar galleries. However, a lot of those that have been priced out of Miami are coming here, and many of them are moving their residences here as well, so in that way, we are kind of having a resurgence here in Hollywood.” While the City focuses on bringing a new audience and a new generation of artists to Hollywood, the Art and Culture Center continues to do what it has been doing for 40+ years, as it says in its mission statement: Cultivating creativity and the support of the arts in our community through education, innovation, and collaboration. Arts education has always been a major focus of the The Art and Culture Center/Hollywood, which officially changed its name about three years ago from The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, dropping the of to clarify that although it is located in Hollywood, it is for everyone. Deputy Director Susan Rakes, who coordinates the Education program, joined the Center in 2003. An educator by training, she has taken the program from some dance and drawing classes to a multi-disciplinary curriculum. Today, that curriculum includes a full range of classes for children and adults. For children, classes include various forms of visual arts, such as drawing, painting and designing, theatrical and acting skills such as projection, stage presence, improvisation and articulation, dance skills, stage presence, musicianship and vocal technique. There are after school and Saturday classes as well as Summer Camp programs in visual and performing arts, complete with stage performances and gallery exhibitions. There are field trips, off-site after-school programs coordinated with partner organizations and free Family Days. Private and small group lessons are also available for children, teens, and adults of all ages and skill levels in piano, guitar, voice, movement and dance, theatre, art and writing. The entire upstairs of the building is devoted to the young artists, and consists of a gallery filled with an everevolving exhibit of art by local students, and the Distance Learning Arts Studio, where virtual visual and performing arts educational content is shared via

FROM PAGE 32 internet and conferencing capabilities to young children through high school students in remote locations. “It’s a great opportunity for an organization to make a mark on arts education and have a far reach doing it,” noted Rusnak. “Where we are now, we have reached our physical limitations,” noted Satterlee. “We are hoping that the GO bond is approved, as it will give us the opportunity to enlarge our facilities, to add education programs for the need that the community is demanding, build an additional 4000 square foot building with five different types of classrooms, and add more adult programming plus more exhibition and performance space.” This year, said Rakes, the newest initiative for the Center is the introduction of an early childhood arts education program, starting kids as young as three. Besides their reputation for its interesting, immersive and unique exhibitions, The Art and Culture Center/ Hollywood is also known for its interesting, immersive and unique fundraisers. Most recently, the Center hosted the 11th version of its Glam event; this year, it was Glam Goes Surreal. Satterlee maintains that although
