Each month will feature candidates from one district, followed by mayoral candidates. This month, District 2 candidates Timothy Burton, Carol Kendall, and Ralph Kenol are featured. Timothy Burton What you should know about me: I am excited about the opportunity to potentially serve and represent my community as a city commissioner. Being the eleventh child of thirteen siblings, I learned to treat others like I wanted to be treated, to share and to lend a helping hand. I developed an early true sense of community. I moved to South Florida twenty-six years ago. I met and married my wife of twenty-five years, the former Debra F. Howard. We gave birth to my son, Timothy Burton, Jr. and provided a home to Christopher Howard, my nephew. I am Vice-President of the Liberia Homeowner Civic Association; Executive

Carol Lynn B. Kendall What you should know about me: I am a mother, a professional woman, a volunteer in civic, government, and environmental activities, a supporter of the arts, and, importantly, a concerned resident of District 2 and of Hollywood. A graduate of Goucher College, I was a small business owner (marketing and public relations) before becoming a stay-at-home-Mom to raise two sons. When they moved on, I furthered my education by attending graduate school at Boston University and held a position as a television producer and a lecturer at the University. My final educational stop was at the University of Richmond (Va.) where I received my law degree, before moving to downtown Hollywood and establishing a career as a family law and land use attorney. I am active in various professional organizations including the Broward County Bar Association, volunteering for its low cost lawyer referral service and its mentoring program I have served on the Board of Collier Audubon Society, the Shelter for Abused Women, and the Izaak Walton League. As a resident of South Florida for more than 30 years I am well acquainted with the issues unique to our community. I currently serve on the Hollywood’s Marine Advisory Committee. What will I do for you: Being a persistent voice for the residents of District 2 is the prime component of what is

Ralph Kenol What you should know about me: I’m a husband and father of three year old and a newborn. I practice business and immigration law in an office on Harrison Street. I feel a real connection to the folks I see and work with every day. I appreciate the impact of the decisions of our city government from a variety of levels. From questions of quality of life as a father and husband, to the experiences of local business as an attorney, I get it. The decisions I will make as your commissioner will be about building a better Hollywood for families like

Restoring the integrity of the neighborhoods that comprise District 2 is my primary goal. The needs and concerns of District 2 have gone unanswered: inadequate street lighting, persistent drainage problems, residential streets being used as truck routes, increased police presence (Why isn’t the police substation on Federal Highway being manned?), deterioration and neglect of residential properties by absentee landlords, and finally I want to assist our local small businesses by looking at ways to improve signage to increase revenue. I intend to see these matters addressed. Supporting the revitalization of the Downtown Hollywood commercial corridor is another top priority. The Commission can no longer be so complacent about boarded up and empty storefronts. Bolstering the development of Hollywood’s waterfront and marine industries also must be emphasized. I have seen other communities that have revitalized their downtown areas and I will lead the effort to accomplish the same in Hollywood. Good management of your tax dollars is the third priority issue. The Commission seems to forget its “Your Money” they are spending. I want to re-evaluate City management to ensure responsibility. yours and mine. It will be about improving opportunities for people who work for the city and making it easier to do business here. What will I do for you: I see two elements to building a better Hollywood: Community service and community development. Almost everything that we do as a city can fall into one of those two categories. We have ensure that community service and community development work hand-in-hand. I will bring a new voice to the Hollywood Commission. I won’t turn a blind eye to problems facing our community. I believe in addressing issues with honesty, transparency and a focus on the big picture. Real Housewives of Hollywood Unlike the reality TV stars on Bravo’s Pop Sensation ‘The Real Housewives’ Series, these women have no time for drama. Instead they are active role models for their community, shaping the future of Hollywood with their influence and involvement. Hollywood Gazette caught up with the following leading ladies, nominated last month by our readers. What do you love about living in Hollywood? Having lived in New York, Miami Beach and the French Quarter of New Orleans, I moved to Hollywood almost eight years ago as I was seeking a clean, safe and progressive and international community that offered a high quality of life for my family. I fell in love with the historic charm and architecture of many of the neighborhoods and Downtown, as well as the unique and convenient access Broadwalk offers to the Beach. I love the fact that my family and I can go to the Beach, enjoy the natural environment and literally step into a restaurant for a bite to eat. Tell us a little about your family life. My immediate family is somewhat non-traditional as I am not only a single mother, but a single parent. I have one biological child, my son Adam who is nine years old, and I am in the process of trying to adopt a three year old boy named Jordan who has been living with us for over six months. Other family members include our pets - three pugs named Pugsley, Jessie and Buster, all of whom are 'rescue.' Tell us about your professional life, and what are your career plans for the future? I have worked for the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency for almost eight years. I started as the Director of Marketing & Business Development for the Downtown District. My current role is serving as Economic

Development Manager for the Beach and Downtown Districts which affords me the opportunity to interact with a variety of people including property owners, developers, retailers and residents. My plan for the future is to continue my formal education in this field and have to the opportunity to continue to use my experience and education in helping communities prosper.

Are you involved in any nonprofit work in the community? At this time in my life and my career, I am not able to participate in outside organizations to any great extent as my all-encompassing focus is my job and my family. I do have a passion for helping children in need and I am currently a foster parent. In the years to come, I look forward to bringing a chapter of E-COMB, a 501c3 environmental awareness organization I helped create in Miami Beach to Hollywood, and getting more involved in organizations such as the Art & Culture Center and FLIFF/Cinema Paradiso.

What advice can you offer women juggling careers, raising a family and volunteering in your community? How do you stay grounded and balanced? I stay balanced by having a good sense of humor, setting priorities and being patient with myself as well as others. Waking up an hour earlier than I think I need to also helps! The best advice I can give other women is to do the same. What do you think needs improvement in Hollywood, and what, if anything, are you doing to improve it? I think overall the City has a lot going for it. We have one of the greatest beaches in all of South Florida, a Downtown that features a main street which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and great neighborhoods. Regardless of all of this, sometimes I get the impression that we do not have a great sense of confidence as a community. I think as a community, we need to band together, take great pride in our properties, support each other and focus on what we can do in order to improve our quality of life as residents of Hollywood. What is your family’s favorite leisure activity in Hollywood? Hands down playing baseball at the park, however, we also enjoy the Art & Culture Center, ArtsPark as well as other great events and activities the City of Hollywood offers.

What do you love about living in Hollywood? My husband and I moved to Hollywood Lakes from Miami Beach in 1998, following my parents’ move up here. Not only did I want to remain in close proximity to my parents, both of whom had some significant health problems, but I also preferred the gentler pace that Hollywood offered over Miami Beach. The Hollywood Lakes area seemed like a wonderful, familial neighborhood where we felt comfortable starting our own family, yet still offered enough of the metropolitan feel that I was accustomed to. And, of course, there was the beach: I love living not more than a few minutes’ drive from the ocean.

in their lives and know how much they benefit from this. Remembering this helps me make those seemingly tough decisions as to where to place my focus with the multitude of demands life places on all of us. The same holds true for spending time with my extended family, something that is so easy to push off but is so important to me and my value system, that I insist on making time for it. However, I do think one can overextend herself in a particular direction, and I try to avoid this by carving out time for myself. I exercise regularly (I’m a big fan of CrossFit 954), and make sure to keep connected with friends. And of course, quality time with my husband (even if it’s not an official “date night” but rather just an evening hanging out and drinking a nice Pinot Noir) and our ability to count on our mutual support are key elements to my sense of balance and sanity.

Tell us a little about your family life. Scott and I have been happily married for almost 14 years. We have 2 incredible children: our 8-year-old son and our 5-year-old daughter. Our lives revolve around our family. I am fortunate enough also to have my mother (my father passed away) as well as my brother’s family in the neighborhood, all of whom we see regularly. Tell us about your professional life, and what are your career plans for the future? I am a Clinical Psychologist with extensive experience working with families and couples. While I adore my career, I made the decision to take temporary leave following the birth of my son to enable me to be home with my children, a decision I feel very fortunate to have made. Now that both kids are in Elementary School, I am returning to my career, on a part-time basis. I have a Private Practice where I specialize in family issues: parent training; conflict resolution and relationship improvement; teen issues; communication issues, including disclosure and discussion of sensitive topics such as impending divorce, serious illness, pregnancy, fertility issues/miscarriage; adoption or egg/sperm donor details; homosexuality; etc. In addition, I have become involved with an agency which provides personal safety training to school children (and their parents) to help them avoid victimization. I have also started writing a book, a fun, “welcome to motherhood” kind of book, and hope to eventually complete it someday! But life intervenes.... 8

Are you involved in any nonprofit work in the community? I am a Board Member for the Heart Gallery of Broward County, an agency whose mission it is to secure adoptive homes for Broward County’s foster children whose parents’ rights have been terminated. Additionally, my family (my husband, our children and I) volunteer each summer for a week with Blue Skies, a charity which provides weeklong beach vacations for families coping with pediatric cancer. I am also actively involved as a volunteer at my children’s school, and this year implemented the school’s first “Reading Coach Program,” a program geared toward assisting students with literacy issues. As far as why I am involved in the above, I’ve always been a bit of an advocate for children and their needs, which is why it

has been my absolute pleasure to serve in these capacities. I feel so blessed in life, and know that my children are so very fortunate with their good health, loving parents, an involved extended family, a comfortable home and an excellent education. I do what I can to give back, because there are so many children who don’t live lives like this. What advice can you offer women juggling careers, raising a family and volunteering in your community? How do you stay grounded and balanced? This is such a great question, and one that most moms I know struggle with, myself included. For me, the key has been always to be mindful of my priorities in my effort to achieve balance. My top priority is, and has always been, my children. I love being actively involved

What do you think needs improvement in Hollywood, and what, if anything, are you doing to improve it? I truly love our city. However, the crime that takes place in our neighborhood is very upsetting (burglaries, car break-ins, occasional assaults). What do I do to improve it? Not enough, although my neighbors and I do try to keep one another informed of any criminal activity that has taken place in effort to increase safety measures. Also, most people drive too fast in the residential areas, which infuriates me, especially when there are children visibly playing in the streets (bike riding, playing kickball, etc.). Again, aside from yelling at speeding cars, I suppose I don’t do enough to improve this. I wish there were more of a police presence in the Lakes section to address these issues. What is your family’s favorite leisure activity in Hollywood? I love our beach! Going to the beach (sometimes on bicycles, even with Grandma on her trike!), having brunch or dinner, and playing in the ocean, especially when there’s a visible sandbar, rank up there as my favorite things to do. All things considered, we really do live in paradise.

Shondelle Solomon-Miles

What do you love about living in Hollywood?

I get very little done, and I’m OK with that. I’m also not afraid to ask for help and I have a lot of people who support me both in business and in my home life. I used to be a ‘gotta do it all myself’ person, but I quickly realized that was a recipe for disaster and a miserable existence. I do spend a LOT of time on my personal development and nurturing my spirit. I’ve discovered that the more time I commit to become a better ‘me’, the better all the other aspects of my life become. When you have so many responsibilities and people expecting things from you, its very easy to forget about your own needs. The irony is however, that when I nurture and give time to myself, and make that a priority EVERYDAY, my productivity improves and the more ‘available’ I am for my clients and loved ones.

I moved to South Florida to attend Graduate school at University of Miami. After my husband and I got married in 2011 we randomly moved to Hollywood. I live in East Hollywood, which I love of course because I’m so close to the beach. Even though I don’t get there as often as I would like, it’s nice knowing it’s just a few minutes away, and I LOVE taking my clients to the beach to workout and enjoy some activity outside of our ‘box’ (aka gym). I lived in New York City for 6 years while in college, and as much as I enjoyed my experience there, I knew that I wasn’t a ‘big city gal’. However, I still do like to be close enough to the ‘big city’ action when I’m in the mood for the ‘hustle and bustle’. Living here in Hollywood I get the best of both worlds: the ‘down to earth’ and ‘family friendly’ Hollywood community , and the ‘glitz and glamour’ of Ft. Lauderdale and Miami right next door.

What do you think needs improvement in Hollywood, and what, if anything, are you doing to improve it?

Tell us a little about your family life. I’ve been married to my husband, Ronald Miles for almost 11 years. He is in the latter stages of earning his PhD from FIU. We have two kids: Jasai, age 7 and Senaya, age 4. They both attend school in Hollywood and a few of their favorite pastimes are playing at Young Circle and building sandcastles on Hollywood beach.

Tell us about your professional life, and what are your career plans for the future?

Since graduating from Columbia University in 1996 I’ve worked in the fitness industry. I began my career working in several of the global health clubs as a personal trainer. I always knew one day I would open my own facility where I could completely embrace my philosophy on fitness and training and also, offer an affordable alternative to traditional personal training. In 2006, my dream came to fruition with the opening of Synergize, a small group personal training studio that specialized in body fat reduction and weight loss. Synergize quickly grew servicing over 500 Hollywood residents in two and a half years, and in 2008 we moved to a larger facility on North Federal Highway in East Hollywood. In 2009 I discovered CrossFit and that completely reinvigorated my passion for fitness. In 2011 I decided to become a CrossFit affiliate and Synergize! became Synergize Home of CrossFit 954. In the next phase of my fitness career I plan to do more public speaking and I’d like to write another book and offer workshops on the Psychology of Transformation. While on my own personal development journey I’ve learned that transforming the mind is THE most critical component of transforming the body, and that’s a message I’m extremely passionate about sharing.

Are you involved in any nonprofit work in the community?

I do not work with any non-profit organization exclusively but one of the non-profits that I’ve supported over the past 5 years is FLIPANY (Florida Introduces Physical Activity and Nutrition to Youth). FlIPANY provides programs and host community events that teach the importance of physical activity and nutrition programs to youths and adults. I am a HUGE advocate of educating children on the importance of physical activity and and healthy eating so that they can develop lifelong habits at an early age. My clients and I also regularly participate in local 5K runs to benefit a variety of charities. Last year I also hosted a Pushups for Charity event to benefit the Wounded Warriors Project. I do plan on taking a more active role in creating and supporting more health and fitness initiatives here in Hollywood, and would like to start by hosting a community fitness festival in early 2013.

What advice can you offer women juggling careers, raising a family and volunteering in your community? How do you stay grounded and balanced?

‘Balancing’ is a never ending challenge, but ironically the busier my life gets the better I become at ‘juggling’. I suppose the less time I have ‘to spare’, the more disciplined I’ve had to become with managing my time. I can divide my life into 4 major areas: family and friends, health and fitness, career, and personal development and spiritual growth. Pretty much everything I do within a day falls into one of these four areas. It’s impossible to balance each of these on a daily basis, but over the course of a week, I do make it a priority to give quality attention to my family, my health, my career and my faith. I’m not the most organized person, so I don’t have any particular method or system for getting things done, I just wake up in the morning, decide on the top three that I’ve got to ‘get done’, and then I don’t stop until it gets done. For example, I’ll say to myself ‘today you have to plan Senaya’s birthday party, write a blog and workout’. Once I get these three things done, then I’m a ‘happy camper’; anything else I get accomplished that day is icing on the cake. I used to stress myself out trying to get everything done on my ‘to-do’ list, but I’ve realized that for me that would create more stress, because once you get one thing done, there’s always something else to take its place, so I never felt like I was making progress. Some days I get ‘a lot’ done, and others days

What needs improvement in Hollywood is indicative of what needs improvement in our country overall: the health and fitness of our residents. We are in a crisis. We have more health and fitness ‘solutions’ than ever before, yet obesity and disease are at an all time high. It is my mission and my passions to do whatever I can to reverse this trend by helping our Hollywood residents lead healthier and more active lives, and to realize that good health is the foundation of a good life. I would love to see healthier places to eat in Hollywood. I would love to be able to go Downtown and grab a celery, beet carrot and apple juice after a workout instead of trekking to Whole Foods in Aventura. I would love to have more healthy places where I can refer my clients to eat. I would love to see more fitness and health related events at Young Circle. The concerts are great, but more events to get our residents healthy and moving would be awesome, especially our children. I do feel that my fitness facility, Synergize Home of CrossFit 954, has helped and will continue to help a lot of people become fit and healthy, but I also feel that there is SO much more to be done. I’m just getting started :)

What is your family’s favorite leisure activity in Hollywood?

For leisure time, my family and I enjoy going to the beach, playing at the Young Circle park or just hanging out at our community pool with friends and family. I’m a big kid at heart so I love taking my children to the Friday night Kid’s Fest and then having dinner or dessert at one of the Downtown restaurants. Our new favorite place for dessert is Menchies and we can’t get enough of the food trucks on Monday Night. My son, Jasai said to me last week: ‘Mom, can we please take a break from the food trucks this week’!

What do you love about living in Hollywood? I have been a resident of Hollywood since 1982 (with the exception of college when I lived in California). What I love most about living in Hollywood is the close proximity to a gorgeous beach, being 20 minutes away from almost everything and being near great friends and family.

For a brief response, I’ll say this: Get a smart phone; always be present for your children, family and friends, despite how difficult it might be to focus on being present; and finally, take time out for yourself to stay healthy in mind, body and spirit.

Tell us a little about your family life. I have a fabulous husband, Jay Auerbach, two very beautiful, intelligent and creative girls and a dog named Puffy. Khami is 11 years old and in 5th grade and Ruby is 6 years old and in Kindergarten. Khami aspires to be a famous director and Ruby plans on being in all her films. It is with great pride that I can say that my parents are our neighbors (we literally share a gate) and my sister, Suzi and her husband live nearby. Tell us about your professional life, and what are your career plans for the future? I practice law with my husband, Jay in Downtown Hollywood that focuses on Real Estate transactions, title work, Estate Planning and Probate. After being a solo practitioner on Harrison Street for 3 years, the law firm of Khani & Auerbach was established in January 1999 and we have enjoyed a presence on Hollywood Boulevard ever since. I am fortunate to be able to serve as a professional in the community where I was raised. You ask about what my career plans are for the future. While I continue to nurture my law practice, my love of music has taken me on a new and exciting voyage. I am presently developing an online music magazine and promotions company, called Rock Cousteau. The concept and name for the company was conceived while attending a music festival in 2008, the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Coincidentally, a festival that I just returned from less than two weeks ago. Although the vision for Rock Cousteau was conceived in 2008, it wasn’t until 2010 that I began developing the concept. Rock Cousteau is dedicated to exploring the depths of great rock music and promoting the 10

music of tomorrow, today. Are you involved in any nonprofit work in the community? I have been involved in a variety of nonprofit organizations in the community over the years. In addition to my involvement with these organizations, I have continued to provide counsel and advice to less fortunate clients without taking a fee. I am also peripherally involved with the Diamond Angels, a fundraising arm for the Joe Dimaggio Children’s Hospital

and have continued to volunteer my time to Temple Solel. I have been a member of Solel since I was three years old and feel a deep connection with the organization because of their genuine concern and care for our community. Much of who I am today can be attributed to my involvement at Solel. I chose to be involved with Diamond Angels because my mom is a two-time cancer survivor and when diagnosed and treated for lung cancer, Memorial Hospital took such great care of her. The organization and all its individual parts are very important to

What do you think needs improvement in Hollywood, and what, if anything, are you doing to improve it? Quick answer would be education beyond the fifth grade, community pride, better entertainment choices and more anchor stores. I am extremely proud to live in the City of Hollywood and always find positive things to say about the place where I live and work, especially to folks who are thinking of visiting. Over the years, our city has unfortunately experienced some dark moments, but I feel that our residents AND those seeking to get us out of the dark moments need to look to the future instead of dwelling on the past. Something that has bothered me for a while, we have this gorgeous amphitheater at the Arts Park, yet it seems that it is not utilized in a very productive way. I am continuing to develop my company, Rock Cousteau, with the idea that some way, I will find a way to make the amphitheater as productive as possible. Finally, my husband and I have always believed that having large retail store chains (in addition to Target and Kohls) alongside local small businesses, would ultimately be the way for the entire city to benefit. What is your family’s favorite leisure activity in Hollywood? Eating breakfast at JP’s, going to the beach, bike riding and enjoying the many beautiful parks that our city has to offer.

What do you love about living in Hollywood? I’ve basically lived in Hollywood all my life. I went to New Orleans for college and spent the decade after that travelling for work and pleasure, but I’ve always considered Hollywood home. Having grown up here, I’m fortunate to be able to maintain friendships with many of the people with whom I went to school. But through my involvement with the Hollywood Women’s Club, the Hollywood Scholarship Foundation and the Ladies of the Lakes, I’ve met so many AMAZING women in the last 10 years. These women are committed to improving our community and work tirelessly to do so. So I would say that one of the things I love most about Hollywood is the dedicated women (and men!) who live here.

for you, whether it’s exercising, engaging in your favorite hobby or just talking to a friend. For me, practicing yoga at YogaOne and at the Hollywood Beach Community Center has definitely helped me to stay balanced and positive. I also love to read and have belonged to a book club for the past few years. Both are great escapes from the various aspects of life that can be stressful. What do you think needs improvement in Hollywood, and what, if anything, are you doing to improve it? I often get frustrated with the fact that various city leaders and staff seem to want to change what I think is unique about Hollywood: our small town charm. It seems to me that many people want to bring development to the city that will make us more like our neighbors to the north and south. If I wanted to live in Miami or Fort Lauderdale, I would move there! We need smarter fiscal policies so that the City doesn’t have to encourage the building of a seventeen story building in the center of our beautiful beach. And spending city money to improve private properties in order to encourage more and larger development, while cutting back or eliminating various city services, makes absolutely no sense to me. We need to be more focused on quality of life issues. Development is not always the answer and can bring with it it’s own problems.

Tell us a little about your family life. Gary and I have been married for seven years. We were actually married by one of my fellow “Real Housewives of Hollywood,” Khila Khani. We don’t have any children, but we plan to be foster parents someday. Tell us about your professional life, and what are your career plans for the future? My husband and I, along with his brother, own Gottzmann and Associates, a property and casualty insurance agency. I’m very proud of the fact that we’ve been able to save many of our friends and family thousands of dollars on their home and auto policies. It’s a great feeling to be able to help others through our professional work. I’m also very proud to be the third generation involved with the Atlantic Sands Beach Suites, a Superior Small Lodging on Hollywood Beach that’s been in my family for over 50 years. I LOVE helping our visitors have the best possible experience in Hollywood. Once people discover our beach, they rarely want to go anywhere else. These two “jobs” actually have some interesting intersections as we also insure many of the other Superior Small Lodgings in Hollywood and throughout the state. Are you involved in any nonprofit work in the community? Over the years, I’ve had an opportunity to be involved in many

of our area’s incredible non-profits, including Kids In Distress, the Art and Culture Center and the Broward Outreach Center, where I served as a board member. My most meaningful volunteer experience came through Big Brothers, Big Sisters. I became a “Big Sister” to an incredible young lady who was a junior bridesmaid in our wedding and who is now a sophomore at Temple University. I actually just came back from visiting her. Being her “Big Sister” has been incredibly rewarding. I also try to help other local students through the Hollywood Scholarship Foundation. Every year, I go back to my alma mater, South Broward High School, to interview seniors who need help paying for college. I am always amazed at the accomplishments of these young people, usually under very difficult circumstances. I only wish we had more funds available for them. Additionally, I’m on the state board of the Superior Small Lodging

Association and on the national board of the Tulane Alumni Association. How do you stay grounded and balanced? I think it’s important to spend a little time everyday doing something that’s just

Each month local community leaders gather to network and support a different local nonprofit. Aprilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Party with a Purpose (PWP) benefited the The Russell Life Skills and Reading Foundation. The Russell Life Skills and Reading Foundation helps innercity children by teaching and reinforcing reading skills that are critical for success in life. The event raised nearly a thousand dollars in two hours through admission fees, raffle ticket sales and a silent auction. Entertainment was provided by Jon Saxx (www.jonsaxx.com). Bluepoint Ocean Grill generously provided an abundance of appetizers and attendees enjoyed the cocktail specials. Kevin has served the program since 2002 in many ways. New President: Victor Green presented Kevin a plaque honoring his four years as President of the Board serving 2008 through May 2012. During his tenure, over 5500 youth from programs such as Boys and Girls Club, Washington Park, and Hispanic Unity have been given the opportunity to learn golf. More important they have been taught the CORE values of the program which include: Honesty, Patience, Integrity, Sportsmanship, Respect, Conﬁdence, Responsibility, Good Judgment, and Perseverance.

Princess Princess is a 3 year old Maltese. “She is not just a dog to me she is part of my family, I do not know what I would do with out her,” explains Jessica Verdera. “I have had Princess for three years I got her since she was just 3 months, she is the best dog anyone could have ever asked for. She is just like one of the girls, when ever I have friends over she sits in the middle of everyone and just hangs out. Ever since I got her I take her everywhere with me.”

Staffing company moves Downtown

When The Muzart Konnection owner Tina Buccellato relocated her arts education and enrichment center from Aventura to Downtown Hollywood in 2005, she recognized the area’s potential as an arts and entertainment hub. With the downtown vision now clearly in focus, Muzart is moving to the heart of the historic district. Buccellato signed a lease with Jenel Management, owner of the former bank site at 1946 Harrison Street, on March 23. Buccellato said the move to a “more visible, more mainstream” downtown location will make it convenient for her customers to enjoy the district’s many offerings, including new restaurants, cafés and live music venues that have opened in recent months. Buccellato continued, “free on-street parking during the daytime hours and the fact that we will be located next to the large municipal garage on 20th and Van Buren Street are conveniences my customers will appreciate.” “I like what I see lately,” said Buccellato, who also serves as Muzart’s executive director. “I’ve always felt connected to this community since the day I came here. I enjoy the concept that is unfolding and being supported by the City, which is centered on the arts and live music, and I want to be a part of it.” The Muzart Konnection serves more than 150 children and adults every week through music, art and movement programs. Offerings include an afterschool program, morning Mommy & Me classes, the Budding Artists Program (BAP) for

preschoolers, Kinder Musik, Music Time, Creative Camp on school holidays, capoeira martial arts classes, yoga classes, computer classes, a dropoff childcare program and the Mothers Art Release Program (MARP), a fourweek workshop course for women who don’t take time for themselves. Muzart also offers customized birthday parties and private lessons for all ages in art, piano and guitar. Healthcare Advocates Honored at Circle of Friends Luncheon for Positive Impact on South Florida Communities

Dorrie Aber-Noyek with her son and daughter in law. At 105 years-old, Dorrie is a beloved longtime volunteer and a familiar fixture at Memorial Healthcare System, delivering inter-office mail at Memorial Regional Hospital each week. Volunteering for organizations she believes in is something she’s done throughout her long and extraordinary life, which began in Liverpool, England, in 1907. War with Germany forced Dorrie and her two children to emigrate to North America while her husband served in the Royal Air Force. In Toronto, Dorrie began her career as a Red Cross volunteer. When her husband rejoined the family in 1946, they moved to Montreal, where Dorrie enrolled in McGill University and later taught kindergarten. By 1965, the warm weather of South Florida tempted the family to leave the cold Canadian winters behind. They moved to Hallandale, where Dorrie has made her home ever since.

Memorial and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundations recognized a group of deserving individuals with the Spirit of Healing Award and the Wasie Philanthropic Leadership Award during the annual Circle of Friends Luncheon, held at The Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa on Wednesday, April 18. This year’s Spirit of Healing Honorees included Dorrie AberNoyek, Stuart R. Brown, M.D., Rabbi Robert P. Frazin, D.D., Mark Kukulski and the 2012 Wasie Philanthropic Leadership Award Honoree, Rochelle Jaffe Greenberg. The awards spotlight accomplishments and excellence within individual professions, contributions to the community, or a commitment to the Memorial Healthcare System. Honorees were nominated by members of the Circle of Friends, a group comprised of donors, physicians, executive staff, and board members of the Memorial Foundation and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation. Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory recently announced its new educational technology initiative, which will place iPads in the hands of all students and teachers beginning in the 2012-2013 school year. The iPad program is the result of the school’s mission to provide a state of the art learning environment that prepares students for the colleges of today and for the careers of tomorrow. “Our Founder, Blessed Chaminade, was insistent that the ‘signs of the times’ be understood in all of his endeavors. Advances in technology are one of the signs of the current times and Chaminade-Madonna is moving ahead to use those advances for the benefit of our students and their abilities to learn,” said President Rev. Often a patient is seeing more than one doctor for various conditions. “The role I want to play is advocate. I contact the primary physician to review their patient’s medication history and reconcile their

Signature Internet Café in Dania Beach is much more than just a convenient place to hang out and sip a cup of coffee while checking email or surfing the Net. The new business, which opened March 30 at 423 E. Sheridan St. in Sheridan Square, combines elements of three booming enterprises—Internet cafés, office services and promotional sweepstakes games—in one unique concept. Signature Internet Café features 25 state-of-the art, user-friendly computers on which customers can purchase Internet time at $12 an hour, or $3 for every 15-minute interval. Black-andwhite and color copying, scanning, faxing and notary services are also available. In addition, special computer software allows Internet users to participate in a variety of sweepstakes games, a type of promotion designed to introduce people to Signature Internet Café’s services and reward them for their business. Sixteen different

games—including video poker, keno and slot or “reel” games—are offered, with winnings placed on a plastic card and redeemable for cash or additional Internet time. “They resemble games that people would find in a casino or pari-mutuel,” said Signature Internet Café owner Michael Hlavsa. Sweepstakes games, however, are not considered gambling and are completely legal activities because there is no consideration involved. As with the popular McDonald’s Monopoly game, for example, participants do not pay directly to enter the game. When Signature Internet Café patrons purchase Internet time, they receive free tokens for sweepstakes game play. Hlavsa stressed that Internet access and office services are the café‘s primary focus. “We want to be the neighborhood office connection for everybody. Broward County talks trash: new waste disposal contract negotiations to conclude May 8

By Buddy Nevins, Special to the Gazette BrowardBulldog.org Deputy Broward County Attorney Noel Pfeffer makes a point while Solid Waste Director Elliott Auerhahn listens during negotiations over new waste disposal contract. The promise of the lowest price for waste disposal could be thwarted by a lastminute demand from top Broward County administrators. The county was in the throes of negotiating a multi-million dollar waste disposal contract when suddenly the government issued a requirement that any company must provide a list of disposal sites. “This is a big issue, a very big issue… Cities will have problems if they don’t know where their garbage is going,” Thomas Hutka, Broward’s public works director, explained during contract negotiations in late April. Newcomer Sun/Bergeron immediately complained that the new mandate favored Wheelabrator Technologies, the Waste Management subsidiary which has held a near monopoly on Broward’s waste disposal for over 20 years and already owns a landfill and a pair of waste-to-energy plants here. “When Wheelabrator won this contract 20 years ago, they didn’t have a disposal site. We are newcomers,” said Aleida “Ali” Waldman, Bergeron’s general counsel. Sun/Bergeron Vice President Phil Medico contended residents and businesses could get a better deal by disposing of the waste in whatever facility has the best price rather than tie themselves to one site for five years. Under Sun/Bergeron’s proposal, waste would be sent to various transfer stations around Broward and then sorted through for recyclable material. Anything that could not be recycled would be trucked to yet-unnamed disposal sites. Wheelabrator proposes to continue disposing waste in its two company-owned existing sites. The waste is minimally processed for recyclables and is either burned or buried – in a landfill along Florida’s Turnpike in North Broward or in an incinerator just south of Interstate 595 in Davie. The burned trash at both locations is used to generate electricity. The sites were built in the late-1980s under a contract with Broward County that will expire in 2013. Under its current agreement, Wheelabrator handles the disposal for 26 of Broward’s 31 cities. Waste removal involves two separate jobs. A hauler has a franchise with each city to pick up waste at homes and businesses. That waste is then hauled to a disposal site that tacks on a fee. The hauling and disposal fees are generally rolled into one fee paid by residents and business owners. The current negotiations involve only disposal, but it is a contract worth tens of millions of dollars over five years. Negotiators are working over details of the contract at this point and no final prices have been set.

DEAL TO MAKE OR BREAK TRASH MONOPOLY With the end of its contract on the horizon next year, Wheelabrator at first proposed extending its monopoly for 20 years through 2033. Sun/Bergeron saw an opening and launched a lobbyist effort to block the renewal of the contract. The lobbying worked. Enough cities, and eventually the Broward County Commission, voted to reject renewal with Wheelabrator. They gambled that better rates could be obtained by pitting Wheelabrator against Sun/ Bergeron in competitive bids. Miramar agreed to be the first city to ask for competitive bids from the two disposal companies. Wheelabrator’s bid was $52.50 per ton, compared with Sun/Bergeron’s $43.25 per ton. Sun/Bergeron got the nod, and a deal is being negotiated. The negotiations by the county and other cities is their attempt to finetune the Miramar bid to see if an even a better deal can be reached. Sun/Bergeron is a joint venture, which is headquartered in Davie in an industrial area near I-595. Sun Recycling, the operating partner, is a subsidiary of the veteran waste company Southern Waste Services of Lantana. Bergeron Environmental and Recycling is the latest venture of Broward entrepreneur Ron Bergeron, who is already a dominant force in road building, storm recovery, real estate and rock pits. Medico, a long-time waste industry executive, is the chief negotiator for Sun/ Bergeron. Medico told county negotiators that “supply and demand” would lower the price over the next five years because numerous new waste disposal sites are expected to open in South Florida, and there would be a “surplus of opportunities to dispose of waste.” There are sites in Miami-Dade, Lee and Okeechobee Counties. Palm Beach County is building a waste-to-energy incinerator that is scheduled to go online in 2015. Any site picked by Sun/Bergeron – like all legal disposal sites in Florida – would have gone through a rigorous permitting procedure by the state. “Any waste will have a final resting place in a legally permitted class one facility,” Medico said. MISSED OPPORTUNITIES? Speaking to negotiators in late April, Medico warned that Broward should not make the same mistake it did in the 1980s by binding disposal to one company’s sites. The county missed opportunities to lower prices because “you were tied up in a 25-year monopoly. You didn’t have a choice” about what sites to use, Medico said. Under the rules of the negotiating sessions, each company gets a day to be grilled and explain its position on why they should be chosen to dispose of Broward’s waste. The discussion of the sites came on Thursday, April 26 when county staffers and two city managers – Lee Feldman of Fort Lauderdale and David Rivera of Coconut Creek – were going over Sun/Bergeron’s proposal line-by-line.

Thursday, April 26 was Sun/Bergeron’s day to be questioned. Wheelabrator’s Vice President of Operations Bill Roberts and Senior Legal Counsel Emily Kahn sat in the audience taking notes. In an interview earlier with Broward Bulldog at Wheelabrator’s sprawling computerized incinerator plant in Davie, Roberts made his case for his company to continue the contract. “We have a proven technology that’s reliable…The infrastructure exists. These facilities are strategically located,” Roberts said. He added that having the disposal sites in Broward contributed $23 million in wages, goods and services and other indirect spending to the county’s economy. He said disposing waste locally takes vehicles off the road because it doesn’t have to be transported to another county. “Our system has worked very well for 20 years,” he said. The county led negotiations are scheduled to conclude and go to the County Commission for its approval by May 8. On paper, the negotiations only involve the small slice of Broward that is unincorporated, but several cities are expected to piggyback on the agreement, hence the presence of Feldman and Rivera. Deputy County Attorney Noel Pfeffer, who is leading the negotiations, said the company that is chosen is expected to go out and sell the agreement to the 26 cities now using Wheelabrator. “There will be some period of time (built into the final contract) for the company to go out and market the agreement,” he said. COMPETITION AND LOWER RATES Competition has already driven down the price of disposing of garbage in Broward. More price pressure is likely. For instance, there is an overcapacity at Wheelabrator’s South Broward waste-to-energy plant. The plant was built to handle 1.5 million tons a year. A few years ago it was processing 1.2 million tons. Today, it’s just 900,000 tons due to the failure to forecast increases in recycling and the struggling economy. “In the end, they have to have waste to keep that facility going. If they lose this contract and aren’t getting enough waste, they’ll cut the price and accept waste from other counties,” predicted a waste industry source. Roberts confirmed that Wheelabrator’s local facilities would have to take waste from other counties if they failed to get enough from Broward. One company that could conceivably help fill Wheelabrator’s plant is Sun/Bergeron, if rates drop far enough. Sun/Bergeron would collect the waste at transfer stations in Davie and elsewhere, then send it to the plant for disposal. “We have a contract with them for disposal in other places,” Medico said.

Making Changes that Last: 3 Critical Questions by Shondelle-Solomon-Miles So last month I discussed that it is fear and not lack of motivation that stops you from consistently working or taking the steps towards improving your health and fitness. And I said the solution is simple: act in spite of your fear; and your fear will lose its power. So, now you’re ready to act. You’re ready to get fit and healthy and change your life. Right? So where do you begin? Join a gym, start another diet, hire a trainer, dust off your workout DVD’s? Not quite yet. There are a few more things you’ll need to have complete clarity on, before you dust off those sneakers, call your trainer or fire up that DVD player. I want you to grab a piece of paper and answer these 3 questions RIGHT NOW. Don’t wait until later because you won’t do it. Do it NOW and write it down! Question 1. 1. What is the SPECIFIC outcome you’re after and why MUST you achieve it now? Not, why you should, or could, or would ‘like to’ but absolutely MUST aaccomplish. Do you sort of want to get into shape, or do you absolutely have to lose the weight? Does dropping a few pounds sound nice, or is living another day in your current body absolutely unbearable? In order to make a lasting change you must be convinced that the time has come NOW, and you must also know EXACTLY the outcome that you expect. Do you want to lose 30 pounds, fit back into your size 6 jeans, or simply get off your blood pressure medications before the end of the year? Whatever it is, write it down, along with why you MUST achieve it NOW. Question 2. What will be the consequences if you DON’T achieve this outcome? In other words, where will you be 1, 3 or 5 years from now if you continue living

in fear and doing (or not doing) what you know you MUST do? Will it be a heart attack, lower self esteem, poor QUALITY of life, divorce, disease, or perhaps even death? You’ve probably heard that humans are motivated by two things: 1) to avoid pain and 2) to gain pleasure. If there’s something you want to do but are not doing, you’re associating more pain to the ‘doing’ than to the ‘not doing’. In other words, the inaction is less painful than the action’. You’ve got to reverse that. When you want to change a behavior pattern the key is to associate pain with the behavior that you don’t want and pleasure with the behavior that you do want. What is the PAIN you will experience by NOT taking action and making your health and fitness a priority. What do you REALLY have to lose? Don’t sugarcoat this.

USPS to collect non-perishable food donations Sat., May 12 On Saturday, May 12, the United States Postal Service will team up with its letter carriers to conduct the annual "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive in Hollywood and across the nation to collect food donations. “The Postal Service is pleased to continue supporting the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) as we enter our 20th year together to help Stamp Out Hunger in America,” says Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe. “I am confident the 2012 campaign will be our best ever because the need continues to grow.” Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, the Stamp Out Hunger food drive is the nation’s largest single-day food drive, having collected more than one billion pounds of food since its inception in 1993. In 2011, generous Americans donated 70.2 million pounds of food, which marked the eighth consecutive year that at least 70 million pounds

were collected. Helping Stamp Out Hunger is as easy as checking your mailbox. Just leave a bag of nonperishable food where your letter carrier normally delivers your mail on Saturday, May 12. Your letter carrier will then pick up and deliver the food to a local food bank. Question 3. What are at least two habits you MUST acquire and two habits you MUST give up in order to achieve your outcome? The bottom line is your current habits are creating your current results. Chang your habits, change your results, and ultimately, change your life. It’s really that simple. he chamberâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s annual Expo Alfresco event was a rousing success. The perfect Chamber of Commerce weather brought in an estimated crowd of over 2,000 people for this food tasting and networking event, which has been going strong for almost two decades. Held in ArtsPark at Young Circle, the event featured dozens of restaurant booths dishing out samples of their delicious fare, wine-tasting opportunities for the grownups and a variety of fun-filled childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s activities. In total, close to 100 local businesses had booths at the event, giving event-goers the opportunity to learn more about the services and products they offer.

City of Hollywood to Strengthen Taft Street Sewer Main The City of Hollywood Department of Public Services will begin strengthening a section of the 48-inch sewer force main that runs along Taft Street. The entire project is expected to be completed in June 2012. The section of pipeline to be worked on is located between the Florida East Coast (FEC) railway tracks and North Park Road. It is part of the primary line connecting west Hollywood, eastern Pembroke Pines and parts of southern Broward County to the Southern Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant in Hollywood. Motorists vehicular speed will be reduced within the construction area. Any private property, such as swales, lawns or driveways, damaged as a result of the construction work will be restored to original condition at no expense to the home or business owner. To ensure any and all damage is addressed, prior to the commencement of the project, work crews will videotape the area where construction work will take place. The residents of homes whose driveways are affected by the construction work are encouraged to use the alley behind their homes to park their vehicles during this project.

Utilities services such as garbage pickup, water and sewer should not be affected during the project. However, residents who live at the following properties along North 31 Road - 1647, 1643, 1639 and 1635 - are asked to place their garbage disposal bins in the alley behind their homes so that construction workers can provide assistance with garbage pickup. City staff and consultants evaluated several options, and selected the best options to minimize the impact of this project to area residents, businesses and organizations.

Music 4 Miracles presents benefit concert May 18

By Jennifer Sandomir Music 4 Miracles (M4M), a local non-profit organization whose mission is to raise financial support for children battling cancer and to provide them an education through the art of music, recently found a sponsor for Faith, an 8-year-old child battling Leukemia. M4M President

Kristi Huddleston first met this special child while visiting JDCH on Valentine’s Day. Music 4 Miracles brought in volunteers to play music for the children and to dress them up like rock stars. “Faith melted the hearts of us all that day,” says Huddleston. Faith asked Kristi if she could join M4M’s “Harmony Hope” music education program, which provides children battling cancer an instrument of their choice plus one year of private music lessons in the comfort of their home during their battle with this life threatening disease. Many of the children have waited almost a year before M4M found them sponsors, but fortunately for Faith, Seminole Tribal member,

Mr. Jim Osceola agreed to give this child the gift of music and presented a sponsorship check to M4M and Faith at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital on Friday, April 6th. World renowned guitarist, AJ Nillo autographed one of his signature guitars for her and when he is not out on tour he will be home in South Florida to teach Faith how to play the guitar in hopes of inspiring her through the art of music while she battles cancer. AJ has toured with artists such as Shakira, Jon Secada, Taylor Dayne, KC and the Sunshine Band and currently plays with grammy-award winner, Joss Stone. Hollywood Hills resident Daniel Metsch recently created a petition to build or create a new middle school in Hollywood Hills. “There is no middle school for the Hollywood Hills area (west of I95, east of the turnpike, south of Griffin Road, north of Hollywood Boulevard) yet there are three (3) middle schools (Olsen, Attucks, Beachside Montessori K-8) east of I95 in Hollywood and one (Driftwood) west of the Florida Turnpike,” explains Metsch. “Hollywood Hills deserves its own middle school.” Metsch is inviting the community to sign the petition through social media outlets like Facebook, to urge the Broward County School Board, School District, and Superintendent to build or a create a middle school for the Hollywood Hills area. Oil-burning Port Everglades power plant to be replaced with a modern, clean facility fueled by natural gas

By Sara Case and Laurie Schecter The Balance Sheet Blog balancesheetblog@gmail.com Did you know that the Port Everglades Power Plant is located almost entirely in Hollywood, and that it’s soon to be demolished? At a recent community meeting at Hollywood City Hall, FPL representatives described the company’s plan to replace the archaic oil-burning Port Everglades plant with a modern, much cleaner facility fueled by natural gas. FPL publicity notes that (1) the new structure fits within the existing plant’s footprint, (2) it will have three shorter stacks instead of the four smoking monsters we have today (140′ as opposed to 350′), (3) no new pipeline installation will be required, and (4) the project will create 650 construction jobs. FPL says the new plant will cut carbon dioxide emissions in half and reduce air emissions by more than 90 percent. It is expected to generate power using 35 percent less fuel and will supply enough power for about 260,000 FPL customers. The new plant is scheduled to open in 2016. FPL is seeking project approval now from the State of Florida Siting Board. You can read more about the new plant on this FPL website. This is definitely good news for Hollywood. The source of the natural gas to operate the Port Everglades plant tells the story. Just five or six years ago, energy companies were seeking permission to ship foreign liquified natural gas (LNG) to off-shore locations (e.g., the Bahamas) where a proposed plant would convert the LNG back to gas. An ocean-bottom pipeline was to be constructed from the regasification plant to the vicinity of John U. Lloyd State Park, followed by horizontal directional drilling to get the pipeline under the Intracoastal and then new pipeline construction all the way to the Florida Gas Transmission Line

located near the Florida Turnpike. This was a huge, potentially destructive project that drew strong opposition based on public safety and environmental concerns. Now the whole picture has changed. Domestic natural gas production based on Hydraulic Fracturing of Shale — the process known as fracking — will supply natural gas to our FPL plant for its 30-year expected life. Major landscape disruption and potential damage to the water supply occur from this process but

Southeast Florida is not a fracking site. Our plant will be fueled by natural gas extracted in states north of Florida. While we applaud replacement of the old FPL polluter plant, at the same time we’re troubled with our gain at the expense of so many other US citizens further north who are now struggling to secure protections from the depredations of fracking.
