Hollywood Resident Named Big Sister of the Year
MOTHER’S DAY BOUQUETS START AT $25
Award puts winners in contention for statewide honor
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County recently chose two stand-out mentors – Big Brother Steven Samuels and Big Sister Quanese Alexander – as the 2019 Big Brother and Big Sister of the Year. Chosen from more than 1,000 mentors who participate in the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County program, Samuels and Alexander epitomize what it means to be a “Big” mentor. “Steven and Quanese completely go above and beyond for the children they mentor,” said Ana M. Cedeno, President and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County. “We know that their Big-Little connections will positively influence these children for a lifetime. We are so proud to honor them.” Samuels, a CPA and resident of
Parkland, said he found out about the Big Brothers Big Sisters program from a longtime mentor who serves on the organization’s board of directors. “For years he had told me about his lifetime of unforgettable Big experiences, how he has mentored and followed his many Littles from their childhood through adulthood and how
much joy and pride these experiences had given him,” said Samuels. “He continually suggested that I consider becoming a Big – I finally agree to give it a shot.” Samuels was paired with Trent in 2014, who was then 9. Over the last four-and-a-half years, the two have spent time together at soccer games, movies, science museums and many other activities. Samuels helps Trent, who has ADHD, harness his boundless energy, while offering sound life skills advice. “I have learned from Steve that you don’t always get what you want,” said Trent, now 13. “He taught me that’s it’s important to appreciate what you have.” Big Sister of the Year Quanese Alexander, a Hollywood resident and entrepreneur with a fragrance line, has been matched with Solielle, 12, for two years. “I’ve always had a passion for helping others” said Alexander. “We all need someone to talk to , show they care and help encourage you. I’m so grateful to be able to be a Big Sister to Solielle, who is an amazing child.” Solielle, who noted that her outings with Quanese are always “super fun,” also feels completely connected to her Big. “Quanese is my best friend,” she said. “I talk to her when I am feeling sad and down, and she’s always there to cheer me up. I can be insecure, and she provides a safe place for me to feel free to open up about my feelings. I think everybody deserves to have someone that they can trust with their feelings.”

ou have probably passed 219 North 21st Avenue hundreds of times. And you may know that the building, which sits across from the tracks just north of Hollywood Boulevard, has some historical significance. It did house the first Hollywood Police Station and City Hall. But as it turns out, the two-story structure has many more stories hidden behind its unassuming facade. An internet search revealed almost nothing about the building or its most famed tenant, the celebrated World Famous Hemmingway’s. So once again, we turned to our trusted source, the Hollywood Historical Society, for photos and information, and reached out to some local folks who were around in the early days of the city. According to a 1924 edition of the Hollywood Reporter, the magazine Joseph Young created to introduce his new city to the rest of the country, 219 N. 21st Avenue was established in July 1924 as the headquarters of the Hollywood Publishing Company, which published the Reporter and the Hollywood News. Less than a year later, Young donated it to the city and it became Hollywood’s first City Hall, Police Station, and jail. It continued in that capacity, as well as the city meeting hall and the courthouse, until 1928. It was declared a historical site by the City of Hollywood in 1997. Throughout the years, the location has housed bars, restaurants, heavy metal clubs, and even, we hear, a bondage dungeon. Among the clubs were The Continental, the Monster Rock Cafe, Club X, and the gay bar Mankind, which opened in September 2000. Local lore says that the building was a bordello in the ‘40s and ‘50s, complete with the ghost of a prostitute who hanged herself and is rumored to still wander the premises. And our favorite local gangster-about-town Al Capone was known to frequent the place when

it was a speakeasy. But 219 North 21st Avenue was never more splendid than it was when, from the late 1970s until well into the ‘90s, it was the restaurant and music venue known as World Famous Hemmingway’s. Famous contemporaries of the time included Young Circle’s Top of the Home, Fort Lauderdale’s Yesterday’s, The Down Under, and Christopher’s, and Miami Beach’s Café Chauveron and The Forge. But none was grander than Hemmingway’s. Both the staff and the clientele dressed in the finest styles of the era.
Managers and waiters dressed in suits and black tie. Outside, the line to enter would often go around the block, well at least if you didn’t have a reservation or know the right people. “Jackets were always required, and Alex was the maître d’, the main man, night and day,” recalled Hollywood artist Jorge Palacios, who was a waiter at the Hemmingway’s in the early ‘80s. “Every top politician, every top city official, every big shot in South Florida was there. There was lots of cocaine, and special private parties that started at one in the morning and went on through the night almost every night.” Tables were held for all the local
elites and notorious. Some were dining for celebrations while others were having their last meals before heading “up the river”. It was South Florida’s cocaine era and mob heyday. No one ever asked what one did for a living at these places. According to Hollywood real estate broker John DeMarco, who represented the owner in a recent sale of the property, Al Capone was said to have been a silent partner in the club. Hemingway’s motto was “Meals, Mead and Mirth,” and for over two decades, it brought great food and some of the biggest entertainers in the business to South Florida. It was both a restaurant with white glove service, as well as a musical venue that featured some of the biggest names in Jazz and Pop. Among the many stars who performed there were Dave Brubeck, Little Anthony, Buddy Rich, and Nat King Cole. Non-concert nights showcased some of the finest live bands in the region, playing top 40 and disco music while patrons danced the nights away. Popular local DJs, a famous Onion Soup and Steak Tidbits, and a commitment to throwing a great party drew a crowd that packed the place every night. Daytime entertainment featured a piano player for the power lunch crowd. His name was Phil — I really don’t know why I remember this, but I do! During the late ‘70s, the house band at Hemmingway’s was legendary Miami R&B singer Wayne Cochran & His CC Riders. It has been said that Elvis Presley stole much of his routine from Cochran, one of our area’s first nationally recognized performers. He performed brilliantly with a full band and dancers. Cochran performances were classic blasts of high energy R&B that attracted people from not only around the region but from around the world. Cochran’s performances were in a revival style, as at the time he was transitioning from performing on the

if these walls could talk cont. from page 5 national music scene to becoming a full time Baptist Preacher in Hialeah. During many a performance, Cochran was known to jump on one of the tables and start smashing bottles and preaching an anti-drinking sermon! These were truly evenings and performances not to be missed and sure to be remembered. While Cochran’s trademark foothigh pompadour haircut was a sight to see, he was not even the most eclectic performer at the Hemmingway’s. That honor easily went to Tiny Tim of “Tiptoe through the Tulips”. He became a part of Hemmingway’s usual line-up, with a traditional booking of one week every year in the main room. One of my more memorable visits to the “Upstairs Room” saw us close the facility late one weekend night. With a desire to continue the evening, we took several revelers, including Tiny Tim, to the old Palm Bay Club in Miami. For the entire ride south, he regaled us with the tale of his marriage to Miss Vickie on the Johnny Carson show. Just another night in the big city. Palacios recalled that almost every big name in entertainment in the ‘80s, including Gloria Estefan and Billy Joel, played there too. “Hemmingway’s was a blast!” said former waiter Peter Richard Viens. “Owner George Young was crazy and fun. Tuxedoed waiters, tableside service, live national bands. Nothing else in the area was like it.” “First of all, the food was delicious,” remembered Hemmingway’s patron Hilary Smith, “and the ambiance embraced the nostalgic era of the ‘40s.” Added former Hollywood Commissioner Sue Gunzburger: “I remember going there for many nice events upstairs, as well having many dinners there that were very enjoyable.” “What fun; it was quite a place,” recalled Susie Smith, who worked there during her college days in the ‘80s. “Wayne Cochran & the CC Riders performed during most of my time there, and Buddy Rich came in for a gig.” But what struck her most was the attention to detail out of the kitchen. “If the manager walked out and a
Photos courtesy of Hollywood Historical Society But it was exactly that attention to detail that made it so good. To this day, memories of the Onion Soup still run through my head and evoke memories of that magical place. Then alas, one day, the doors closed and the party ended. And like so many other fun and iconic South Florida places, World Famous Hemmingway’s simply moved out of the daily dialogue and become folklore or faded from memory. The rumor mills say that Hemmingway’s sudden closing had something to do with a drug deal gone wrong, coins owed, and “people who were being watched,” said Palacios. But no one really knows. Today, the building houses a Peruvian restaurant called Runa’s, and the adjacent bar, called the Tavern, still holds remnants of the glitz and glamour that was the original Hemmingway’s. The marble floors, high ceilings, crystal chandeliers, and reportedly original Tiffany stained glass recall the grandeur of its glory days. The long, beautifully-embellished, mahogany bar, which local chatter claims came from the original Yankee Stadium in New York, was, according to realtor DeMarco, supposedly a gift from Capone to his partner in the establishment. “Google It” is our answer to every request for information these days. Yet there is not one mention of Hollywood’s first City Hall/Police Station/ Jail, nor of the Hollywood Publishing Company, nor of the historic World Famous Hemmingway’s, the grandest inhabitant of them all. As always, we thank the Hollywood Historical Society for their unceasing efforts to catalog and preserve the precious memories of the city that Joe built.

As part of the Art of Community Grant awarded to the City of Hollywood by the Community Foundation of Broward, the City of Hollywood installed a new sidewalk on 14th Avenue in front of the Clubhouse, incorporating custom mosaic tiles featuring a part of the Club logo. Okay, the headline may have given it away! It’s the Hollywood Women’s Club. Founded in 1922, the Club is not only the first club to be organized in Hollywood but predates the official founding of the City of Hollywood, which occurred in 1925. The Club became a member of the Florida Federation of Women’s Clubs in 1922 and of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs in 1924. The Hollywood Women’s Club was originally created by The First Ladies of Hollywood. They were the wives of workers building the city under the employment of Hollywood founder, Joseph Young’s construction companies. which the Club was built. “We are first and foremost a club built on the spirit of volunteerism,” said Podesta. “We want to continue to contribute to our community. Most of our members are also members of many other clubs that contribute to the community and together, as our motto says, we live the volunteer spirit.” Among the earliest projects of the original Club members were: • The donation of hundreds of books, which founded the first Hollywood Public library. • Tag Day sales to obtain funds that were used to finance health screenings for local school children. • Assisting migrating farmers with adequate housing and welfare. • Getting the City of Hollywood its first telephone service. • Running a War Bonds Drive netting over $12,000, the largest amount collected by any agency participating in the drive. The Hollywood Women s Club and partners volunteering together to aid the community. The spirit of the Club hasn’t changed much since the early days. Recent and current projects include: • Support of literacy programs via the Born to Read Project. • Youth Scholarship Fund in collaboration with the Hollywood Rotary Club. • Participation in Hollywood Historical Society activities, such as hosting the Founders Day Celebrations and collaborating on the Historic Home Tours. • Annually supporting the Neighborhood Crime Watch program and Night Out Against Crime in collaboration with the Hollywood Lakes Civic Association and the Hollywood Police Department. • In 2011, the launch of significant fund-raising events such as the first annual Club Golf Tournament and Margaritas in Paradise for the restoration of the Clubhouse. • On the state level, as member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, the club supports Special Olympics,
the Hacienda Girls Ranch, Canine Companions for Independence, Roc Camp for children with cancer, Sew Much Comfort, Heifer International, Operation Smile, and other causes. The Hollywood Women’s Club Community Service Programs and Special Projects combine the resources of more than 100 members, who spend over 5000 hours each year supporting women’s health and home life issues, fighting domestic violence, helping the homeless transition to better lives, local arts, conservation, elementary education, literacy and equality, citizen advocacy and international outreach programs, and encouraging volunteer service throughout the community. Other grateful local beneficiaries include the Broward Outreach Center, the Community Enhancement Collaboration, local Cancer Research Centers, Local Boys and Girls Clubs, Feeding South Florida, ChildNet, The Walk to End Alzheimer’s, The Exceptional Theater Company, the Florida State Hospital Fashion Show, Henderson Behavioral Health, Local Schools, Holiday Bikes To Schools, the Brighter Future Foundation, the South Florida Wildlife Sanctuary, and the list just goes on and on. And don’t forget the Flockings. Every Holiday season, hundreds of pink flamingos suddenly appear all over Hollywood, compliments of the Club, leading residents to wonder what the Flock is going on! Next up is the 8th annual golf tournament at the Hollywood Beach Gold Course on July 20th. “It’s always one of our most fun and most successful fundraisers,” noted Podesta. Also known for its ability to react to community need quickly, the Hollywood
1927 Clubhouse. To help achieve its goals, the club is always looking for new members, and the clubhouse is available for rentals for family or business parties, gatherings, baby and bridal showers, weddings, and other events. Evening meetings are on the second Wednesday of each month from 6:30-8:00 p.m. Since the summer social season is about to begin, meeting locations will change from their usual home at the Clubhouse. New LGBTQ Council Launches in Hollywood By Ariana Boland Special to the Gazette The newly formed Hollywood LGBTQ Council is set to join the growing culture of diversity in Hollywood. The group held its official launch party, the Hollywood Equality Connection, on April 24 at the Muse at the Circ Hotel on Young Circle. The new council’s goals are to increase awareness of the LGBTQ community’s presence in Hollywood and to contribute to Hollywood’s revitalization initiatives. The LGBTQ council’s mission statement describes getting local LGBTQ residents and entrepreneurs involved in “shaping the vision for a vibrant and inclusive city center.” Thus, the LGBTQ Council hopes to bring forth new perspectives and ideas about the growth of Hollywood’s business sector.
“We all live here, and we all struggle with Hollywood’s slowness. We [the Hollywood LGBTQ Council] want to elevate the quality of life,” said member Clive Taylor. There isn’t a major LGBTQ presence in Hollywood, but some LGBTQ-owned businesses are opening. A new gay sports bar is opening on Harrison Street. To increase LGBTQ involvement, the Hollywood LGBTQ Council is partnering with the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, the Fort Lauderdale LGBT Cham-

ber of Commerce, and Equality Florida. In the past, members of the LGBTQ community have moved into previously run-down areas, like Miami Beach and Wilton Manors, in large numbers, helping create safe spaces, improve living conditions and drawing in new business. “It’s just astounding,” said Taylor about the difference LGBTQ community members made in those cities. The Hollywood LGBTQ Council thinks Hollywood can experience similar
effects. The city has a rare intact historic business district and attractive homes along the intercoastal waterway, making it an ideal place for new growth. For more information, call (954) 665-7002.

The Civic Associations Of Hollywood: Doing Their Civic Duty and Working for You, One Neighborhood at a Time BY ROBIN KERR DRULARD COMMUNITY CORRESPONDENT robin@hollywoodgazette.com
Every month, signs pop up in the many communities of Hollywood, inviting people to the various Civic Association meetings in the area. Wikipedia defines these associations as a type of organization whose official goal is to improve neighborhoods through volunteer work by its members. But really, a civic association is so much more. A document put together by the The Country Club Hills Civic Association in Virginia says that in general, its objectives are “to preserve, enhance, and plan for the orderly development of the neighborhood and to promote the general welfare, safety and civic spirit of the community. The power of a civic association” it says, “is organized public opinion.” Here in Hollywood, the City has 19 recognized civic associations, according to Terry Cantrell, president of the Hollywood Lakes Civic Association (HLCA), one of the more active civic associations in the city. Of the 19, 17 are members of the Hollywood Council of Civic Associations (HCCA). The website of the HCCA says it lives by the belief that our neighborhood associations can become a more effective force for neighborhood improvement when we work together toward common goals. The Civic Associations clearly believe there is power in numbers. The HCCA works both citywide and regionally as a member of the Southeast Florida Regional Partnership, to support regional goals aimed at improving the quality of life in every neighborhood. “There are a lot of ‘generic’ issues in every neighborhood,” said Cliff Germano, president of the HCCA, “the ones that every association will likely struggle with at some time, such as crime and code enforcement, and then there are some specific issues, like flooding, which will affect some areas and not others. As a group, we try to ad-

Now we’ve also got a website, and the newsletter has slowly developed to where it is now up to 28 pages, mostly color, contains advertising which supports it, and it goes to 7,000 people in the area, four times a year.” Second, he said, are the lively monthly general meetings and members-only social events, where neighbors meet, mingle, and get excited and involved in local issues. Finally, Cantrell and others are active in representing the community at City Hall. “We’re very visible at commission and other meetings, speaking about issues that affect our neighborhood, for example, the vacation rental situation,” he said. “We helped write the current ordinance that is now in effect, and which hopefully will stay in effect.” At the HLCA April meeting, the vacation rentals were the first topic discussed. Currently, Florida state government is trying to take back the rights of the local authorities to regulate vacation rentals in residential communities, and HOAs and CAs alike are lobbying to keep that authority in the hands of the neighborhoods rather than at the state level. Members were strongly urged to write to their representatives in Tallahassee to keep that power local. But it was the secondary topic that really got the attendees involved. Representatives of the Parks and Recreation Department came to speak about boats “squatting” in North and South Lakes, sparking a spirited debate about the designation of the Lakes as recreational areas versus installing moorings to discourage illegal anchoring and bring revenue to the county. The meeting ended before tempers really flared, and an ad-hoc committee of concerned citizens was formed to address the situation head on. This is exactly the power and the purpose of a Civic Association. Watch this space next month when we visit the meeting and see what’s up at the Downtown/Parkside/Royal Poinciana Civic Association.

Text to 911 Now Available in Broward County Residents and visitors who can’t place a call to 911 in an emergency can now text 911 to request police, fire, or medical assistance in Broward County. The enhanced 911 system now includes the capability of receiving texts thanks in part to a $353 million investment in enhancing Regional 911 in Broward, approved by the County Commission. "This technology directly benefits members of our community who are deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired. They will now have a more efficient and effective way to request emergency services in times of need. Texts to 911 should be used by members of the public ONLY in situations
where it may be unsafe to make a phone call such as in the case of an active shooter, home invasion or domestic violence situation. Text to 911 will save lives. It’s a great addition to our emergency services,” said Broward County Mayor Mark Bogen. The Text to 911 system currently processes texts in English; language translation is not currently available. Broward County 911 personnel are trained to respond to emergency texts and will dispatch help as soon as they confirm the caller’s location and type of emergency. For more information on the Text to 911 system and to see a video, visit 911.Broward.org.

MIY Ceramics Studio Hosts "Empty Bowls with a Twist" Event May 19 to Benefit Broward Outreach Center MIY Ceramics Studio artists are making beautifully hand-crafted ceramic bowls to benefit Miami Rescue Mission & Broward Outreach Centers. One of the MIY potters, Takeshi Kamioka, a chef with 30 years’ experience, has offered to set up a pop-up kitchen and will donate his time, expertise, and equipment for our event. For a $35 donation, each guest will be able to choose from an eclectic mix of handmade ceramic bowls. The guest will then be guided to the Pop-Up kitchen to have their bowls filled with delicious professionally made Ramen. Throughout the day there will be music and potters will be demonstrating their craft on the potter’s wheels. Our potters are already hard at work making sure that we will have plenty of beautiful bowls on hand. Outstanding Vision with Scleral Contact Lenses! By Dr. Nathen Klein
Hollywood Fire Rescue and Beach Safety' s Jr. Lifeguard Program provides the children of our community with a sound aquatic background, acquaints them with the hazards of ocean swimming and exposes them to an environment that teaches confidence and good sportsmanship. The Jr. Lifeguard Program is offered to children ages 8 to 17 years of age during the summer months. The one week program consist of: - Ocean and Beach Safety - Lifesaving techniques and procedures - Rescue board and ocean kayak skills
- Ecology - First aid and competition in ocean lifeguard events Forms may be filled out and brought to the Beach Safety Headquarters, located at 707 South Ocean Drive on Hollywood Beach. Visit http://www.hollywoodfl.org/257/JrLifeguard-Program to download an application. Applications will be accepted on a first come first serve basis during the registration period. Space is limited.
For more than half a century, contact lenses have offered crisper, sharper and clearer vision compared to glasses. Unfortunately, many individuals simply could not wear contact lenses comfortably due to irritation, dryness, excessive lens movement, or achy eyes after limited lens wear. There is wonderful news for everyone who would like to wear contact lenses, but had trouble wearing them in the past, or were previously not good candidates for contacts. Scleral lenses are the most exciting and dramatic breakthrough in the past few decades in the realm of contact lenses by offering many of these patients the chance to become regular contact lens wearers! The vast majority of patients who have previously been unhappy or uncomfortable with contact lenses can now comfortably obtain sharper vision, greater lens wearing time, easier handling, and for less risk of complications with the amazing advancements of scleral contact lenses. Scleral contact lenses dramatically enhance quality of vision and eliminate pain and light sensitivity for people suffering with: - dry eyes - keratoconous - irregular or excessive astigmatism - corneal ectasia - Sjogren's syndrome - difficulties following LASIK, RK - history of corneal transplant surgery Scleral contacts lenses are noticeably larger in size. Their weight does not rest on the actual cornea, like a gas permeable or hard contact lens, but rather it rests on the sclera, which is the white part of the eye, and vaults over the cornea. This gives the patient a much better level of comfort while wearing the lenses, since the sclera is a lot less sensitive compared to the cornea.
The lens is also filled with nonpreserved saline solution prior to insertion. This setup, with the large scleral lens and the saline solution, creates a new equilibrium for the cornea, and typically allows the patient to have clearer, more comfortable vision. As mentioned, patients with any type of corneal irregularity, such as keratoconous, corneal transplants, complications from LASIK, RK, or other corrective surgeries are typically great candidates for scleral contact lenses. In addition, many patients suffering from dry eye disease can now comfortably wear moist scleral lenses all day to alleviate the symptoms of chronic dry eye. Finally, many patients were previously limited by the contours of contact lenses, such as those that are nearsighted, have astigmatism, and need extra help to read, called presbyopia. Since all scleral lenses are customized for each and every patient, these patients can have a custom crafted lens that will maximize each patient's vision at every distance and visual demand. Scleral contact lenses are an amazing breakthrough in offering outstanding vision and comfort! Dr. Nathan Klein and Dr. Alan Mendelsohn are eye physicians practicing at Eye Surgeons & Consultants, Hollywood, Florida. For more information, call 954-894-1500.

The City of Hollywood Department of Public Utilities will begin its Annual Free Chlorine Line Flushing Program on Sunday, May 19. The free chlorine portion of this program will end on Friday, June 21. If necessary, flushing may continue across the City through Wednesday, July 3rd to achieve optimal system maintenance. The Annual Flushing Program is used to help rid the water distribution pipelines of any accumulated sediments. The hydrant flushing may temporarily cause cloudy or discolored water, which should clear in a few hours after flushing. The cloudiness is due to sediment in the pipelines and is not harmful or hazardous. Typically, flushing will take place in the evening hours between 9 p.m. and 2 a.m. when the
demand for water is low. Residents may notice a change in the look and/or taste of their water during this time. PLEASE NOTE: The City will discontinue Free Chlorination as of June 21. Owners and managers of businesses with fish and shellfish holding tanks and users of kidney dialysis machines are advised that regular methods for testing and removing free chlorine will not be effective during the remainder of the flushing period. It will be necessary to test and adjust for chloramines after June 21, 2019. For more information, call the City of Hollywood Water Treatment Plant at 954-9674230. Ask for Carlos Aguilera, Public Utilities Manager, or Luis Montoya, Water Treatment Plant Superintendent.
