MUNICIPAL NEWS

Hollywood commission passes ordinance to regulate short-term rental properties It's bad news for house parties CORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com in Hollywood: following a long discussion during a recent meeting, the Hollywood Commission passed an ordinance that will create some new regulations for short-term rental properties. This new ordinance is in response to numerous complaints received over the years involving vacation rental properties ranging from too much noise to loud and crowded parties that go late into the night and other problems associated with short term rentals. The operators of these facilities are now required to obtain an annual license for $200 and have someone available near the property to deal with emergency situations. In addition, the new regulations limit the number of guests to four to a bedroom. Operators must also post Hollywood’s noise regulations, the days that trash is collected and a map with the locations of parking. A first violation can mean a $250 fine and additional offenses can mean BY DAVID VOLZ

Water line flushing continues through Nov. 9 The City of Hollywood Department of Public Utilities will began its Annual Water Line Flushing Program on Oct.12, 2015. Flushing will continue across the City through Nov. 9, 2015. Water remains safe to drink during this required process. The Annual Flushing Program is used by the Broward County Health Department to help rid the water distribution pipelines of any accumulated sediments. The hydrant flushing may temporarily cause cloudy or discolored water, which should settle and clear a few hours after flushing. The cloudiness is due to the sediments in the pipeline and is not harmful or hazardous. During the water line flushing period, the Water Treatment Plant will temporarily change its method of disinfection from chloramines to free chlorination. Owners and managers of businesses with fish and shellfish holding tanks and users of kidney dialysis machines are advised that regular methods for testing and removing chloramines will not be effective during the flushing period. It will be necessary to test and adjust for free chlorine. Contact Taylor P. Calhoun, Public Utilities Water Treatment Plant Manager at 954.967.4230 with questions.

a $500 fine. A short-term rental operator with three offenses in a year can lose his or her license for one year. Hollywood residents at the October meeting complained about problems

associated with the rentals while operators insist that if the properties are properly maintained, there will few problems. During the meeting, Mayor Peter Bober said he understands that some

people in Hollywood dislike the shortterm rentals. But he said that under Florida law, they cannot simply be closed down.

FOR GOODNESS SAKE

Community Enhancement Collaboration gears up for the season of giving Located at 5648 Wiley Street CORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com in Hollywood, the Washington Park Service Center is home to the non-profit organization, Community Enhancement Collaboration, also known as CEC. The organization offers a place for people of all ages in the community to gather, get assistance and spend quality time. Children work on academics, adults receive help in finding jobs, and seniors brush-up and enjoy socializing. Nadine McCrea, founder and president of CEC, expressed her longstanding passion for helping others. “I am most concerned about helping families in the community. Many are facing the problem of paying their rent and trying to get enough food to eat.” Nadine and a group of volunteers offer a variety of programs designed to help the people of the community obtain food, enhance their skills to find work, and help children develop their reading and mathematics skills. Services include a food pantry, computer training, clothing bank, and educational workshops, to name a few. “I want to help the young people in the community,” stated Nadine. “I don’t want them to get into trouble.” The CEC recently received a $5,000 grant from the Hollywood Police Department to help children. Nadine and about 25 volunteers help out at the center each week, among them BY DAVID VOLZ

Art and Culture Center of Hollywood celebrates 40th Anniversary Three current and former Hollywood Mayors attended luncheon In celebration, the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood hosted a 40th Anniversary Luncheon on Sunday, October 25, 2015 at its main gallery at 1650 Harrison Street. The event featured a sit-down luncheon, music by harpist Charlene Conner, and recognition of founders, as well as a presentation

about the Center’s history. The luncheon was attended by multiple local politicians, many of the Center’s founders, board members, volunteers and guests, including City of Hollywood Mayor Peter Bober, and former mayors Mara Giulianti and Sal Olivieri. The Center opened its doors with a ribboncutting ceremony on November 2, 1975. After 16 years of attracting visitors on Hollywood Beach, the Center moved to the city-owned, historic Kagey Mansion in downtown Hollywood in 1992, allowing it to expand on its display space, and adding classrooms in the adjacent Arts School for youth and adult arts education.

COMMUNITY

7th Annual Cardboard Boat Race engages community in team building BY DAVID VOLZ CORRESPONDENT

dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com

Families and friends got together at the City of Hollywood Marina to participate in the 7th Annual Cardboard Boat

Race. And while it was a competitive event, most of those who entered were there to have some fun and a few laughs. During the morning the teams worked under a tent to build their boats from cardboard. Then at about 1:00 p.m. the competition began. Some of the boats were crewed by young children. But teenagers and adults also joined in the fun. The challenge was to paddle a very small boat a short distance. Some of the competitors struggled to keep their boats upright while completing the course. Lara Ruddy, a science teacher at McNicol Middle School brought members of the Gaia Club, an environmental elective class at her school. They built a boat and named it the “Gaia,” which stands for Grow Awareness in It's the Boatles! All. “We want to show people who were are. We also want to win and it takes team work to build the boat,” she said. Jim Melton of the “No Place Like Gnome” team said, “This is our third time doing this. We enjoy building the boat. It takes some teamwork but we have a lot of fun,” he said. Jordan Merritt of “SS Sinks A Lot” said, “We had a lot of fun building our boat with our friends,” he said. Tammy Fernos brought her son Hendrix Fernos. They and some friends built a boat their children named “Lego She Blows.” “It would be nice to win but we just found out about this a few days before the competition. We spent time with our friends and had some fun,” she said. There was an enthusiastic audience at the event. They cheered on the competitors and made noise with horns.

TURKEY DAY TIPS

The sight of a beautifully cooked, golden brown bird being brought to the table is one of the most memorable moments of any Thanksgiving gathering. Follow these tips to prepare the perfect centerpiece for your holiday meal:

Thawing Your Turkey For every 5 pounds in weight, thaw in original wrapper for 24 hours in the refrigerator. Thaw faster by covering with cold water in the sink and soaking approximately 30 minutes per pound. n Refrigerate as soon as thawed or cook immediately. For best quality, do not refreeze uncooked turkey. n

Roasting the Bird n Baste with extra virgin olive oil. n Place breast-side-up on rack in shallow roasting pan. Cook in 325 F oven. n For an unstuffed turkey, place a stalk or two of celery, seasonings, a cut-up onion and a handful of parsley in the cavity to keep it moist. n Lay “tent” of foil loosely over turkey to prevent over-browning. n Turkey is done when meat thermometer is 180 F or when the red stem on the pop-up thermometer rises. n For easier carving, let turkey stand at room temperature for at least 20 minutes.

$100,000 in job coaching scholarships available for 100 local veterans

The scholarships, worth $1,000 each, will be available on a firstcome, first-serve basis to the first 100 U.S. military members, veterans and their spouses, who visit www.53.com/veterans As part of its annual fall programming to support and honor veterans, active duty U.S. military, reservists and their family members, Fifth Third Bank announced that it will fund $100,000 worth of full job coaching scholarships for veterans seeking help transitioning into a civilian career. The scholarships provide eight weeks of personalized job coaching with a military job specialist at NextJob, a national reemployment solutions company. The scholarships, worth $1,000 each, will be available on a firstcome, first-serve basis to the first 100 U.S. military members, veterans and their spouses, who visit www.53.com/veterans to access the Job Seeker’s Toolkit and complete enrollment. Fifth Third and NextJob are pleased to once again open access to the Toolkit, NextJob’s proprietary online job search modules, for free to all former and current military this year. The scholarship contest and Toolkit access are available from October 15, 2015 – December 31, 2015. Once registered, access to the Job Seeker’s Toolkit continues for up to 39 weeks. “Members of the military face unique challenges making the change from the military into civilian life,” said Kathy Malone, a 26-year Navy veteran and career coach, who leads the military job coach team at NextJob. “Personalized job coaching is proven to be highlyeffective in helping bridge the gaps that exist for military members during the transition, including identifying transferable skills, crafting a marketable resume and aligning expectations about a civilian career. Our team has years of experience in helping servicemen and women and we consider it a privilege to continue to serve them in the next phase of their lives.” “If it weren’t for Kathy Malone, my NextJob military transition coach, I would not be where I am today,” said Joe Scherrer, retired Air Force Colonel and president of The Leadership Crucible. “After deciding to retire after a 24-year Air Force career, I wanted to create a ‘soft landing’ for myself and my family 16

Hollywood Fire Station 45 closed during construction Hollywood Fire Station 45 is now closed in preparation for the construction of a new fire station on the site. Station personnel will operate from the Hollywood Fire Rescue Training Facility, 3400 N 56th Avenue, during the construction. Originally built in 1965, Fire Station 45 is the oldest fire station in the City of Hollywood. The infrastructure is out of code and the size of the station cannot house the response vehicles necessary for the area the station covers. The new facility will be larger and include modern technology to allow Hollywood Fire Rescue to better serve area residents. The Fire Rescue Training Facility, where personnel will be housed during the construction period, was designed to be able to operate as a fully functional backup fire station. This will ensure there will be no impact to emergency response during the construction period. For additional information on this project, please call Fire Rescue Administration at 954.967.4248. In the event of an emergency, please call 911 for Fire Rescue response.

Memorial Cancer Institute Leads in New Lung Cancer Therapies, Research by L. Kenneth Barnett Commissioner South Broward Hospital District d.b.a. Memorial Healthcare System

E

very November, we observe National Lung Cancer Awareness Month. This year, we do it with the exciting knowledge that new lung cancer therapies are becoming available, and new ground is being broken on the research front. It’s gratifying to know that right here in South Florida, Memorial Cancer Institute at Memorial Regional Hospital and Memorial Hospital West is at the forefront of both. One promising new treatment is nivolumab, an immunotherapy drug that the Food and Drug Administration approved in March for treating squamous cell carcinoma, which makes up approximately 30 percent of all lung cancers. Immunotherapy drugs boost the body’s immune system to fight cancer by effectively targeting cancer cells. Previously only approved for melanoma, nivolumab is given as an injection every two weeks and carries many fewer side effects than traditional chemotherapy. The American Society of Clinical Oncology has hailed the drug as “practice-changing.”

“We may be able to achieve better results with nivolumab than with chemotherapy, with much lower toxicity to the patient,” says Luis Raez, MD, FACP, FCCP, Medical Director, Memorial Cancer Institute. “It’s possible that a lot of other drugs will be approved soon, too, because there’s a lot of research going on.” Speaking of which: Dr. Raez, Memorial Cancer Institute and Memorial’s Office of Human Research have just conducted a innovative study of disparities in overall survival rates among lung cancer patients. Partnering with Caris Life Sciences and Foundation Medicine, the Memorial team explored the so-called Hispanic paradox: lung cancer patients of Latin descent who appeared to survive longer than non-Hispanic white patients, despite being diagnosed at a more advanced stage. Results showed no significant differences in the frequency of cancer cell mutations between the two populations, and no differences in survival. Dr. Raez presented the study at the 16th World Conference on Lung Cancer in Denver in September.

26

NOVEMBER 2015

Finally, it has recently been discovered that DNA from cancer tumors – including lung cancer – can be found in the plasma from blood samples. “It is our goal at Memorial Cancer Institute to use this new method to decrease or even replace the use of lung cancer biopsies in the future,” Dr. Raez says. As a member of the Board of Commissioners of the South Broward Hospital District, I’m proud that Memorial Healthcare System and Memorial Cancer Institute are so active in these exciting research and treatment developments. And since one of the best weapons against lung cancer is early detection, I’m pleased to report that once again, Memorial Cancer Institute is offering lung CT scans for just $99.* You’re eligible for this special screening offer if you are between 55 and 74 years old, currently smoke or quit smoking in the last 15 years, and have no severe co-morbidities that would inhibit treatment. All you need to do is get a written prescription from your doctor and have the CT scan performed at a Memorial facility. Yes, research and recent advancements in drug therapies definitely give us more breathing room in the fight against lung cancer. But the knowledge you’ll gain from your CT scan can help clear the air for you today.

For more information on Memorial Cancer Institute and the special $99 lung cancer screening, visit MemorialCancerInstitute.com or call 954-265-HEAL (4325).

*If insurance or other healthcare payor does not cover the CT Lung Screening or does not apply, then you can have this procedure at the $99 rate. Payment must be made in advance. Price includes the performance and interpretation of the exam. Patients must have a prescription for the procedure. The invoiced amount may constitute a net discount, If patient is a Medicare or other federal healthcare program beneficiary, patient may be obligated to report this discount to the program upon request. The patient and any other person responsible for payment has a right to refuse to pay, cancel payment, or be reimbursed for payment for any other service, examination, or treatment that is performed as a result of and within 72 hours of responding to the advertisement for the free, discounted fee, or reduced fee service, examination or treatment. Other conditions may apply.

TRANSPORTATION

Broward Commissioners approve transportation network company ordinance Popular transportation network company Uber resumed operations weeks ago in Broward County after Commissioners approved new regulations. Transportation Network Companies (TNCs) use an internet application to match up passengers with drivers who operate their own vehicles to provide transportation. The approved ordinance will require TNCs to certify to the county that they have conducted state and local driver background checks and performed vehicle inspections. All for-hire vehicles are required to carry liability insurance that meets state standards or has been approved by a state insurance agency. The new law also stipulates that TNCs would not hire drivers convicted of criminal offenses of "moral turpitude" relating to sex crimes and a comprehensive list of specific violent felonies. Under the new terms, the county will be able to conduct audits twice a year and perform random inspections of drivers and vehicles. Commissioners also approved a separate agreement to establish fees and a vehicle monitoring system for passenger services at Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International

Airport and Port Everglades. The agreement charges $4.50 per pick up at the airport and $2.00 per pick up at the seaport. In April, Broward became the first county in South Florida, and one of the first in the nation to develop an ordinance specifically regulating transportation network companies. Since then, numerous public meetings and discussions have taken place to develop a regulatory framework to accommodate TNCs and provide fair competition for the established taxicab industry. Broward Mayor Tim Ryan, Vice Mayor Marty Kiar, Commissioners Stacy Ritter, Chip LaMarca, Mark Bogen, and Beam Furr approved the TNC ordinance and Commissioners Lois Wexler and Dale V.C. Holness voted in opposition. Commissioner Barbara Sharief was not in attendance. Uber representatives told Commissioners they could resume operations in Broward County as early as a week from the approval. A Lyft representative said service would begin again, but did not specify a date.

ART AND CULTURE

Art and Culture Center of Hollywood to present Nina Surel’s brand new exhibition: Sailing to Byzantium Also exhibiting at the Center are Santiago Rubino, Oliver Wasow, Gustavo Oviedo and Michael Namkung The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood will present the latest work by Nina Surel as she takes guests on a journey in her new exhibition Sailing to Byzantium. The exhibition opens on Friday, November 13, Nina Surel 2015, from 6 to 9 pm and will run through January 24, 2016. The reception is free for members and $10 for non-members. Gallery hours are TuesdayFriday, 10 am – 4 pm and Saturday-Sunday, noon-4 pm. The Center will also show Santiago Rubino: Light Out of Darkness; Oliver Wasow: Studio Portraits; Gustavo Oviedo: The New Past; and Michael Namkung: Levitation and Gravitas. In Sailing to Byzantium, Nina Surel will present a new body of work that translates William Butler Yeats' poetic allegory of aging into an imaginary physical and spiritual journey. Surel uses sculpture, installation, sound, and video, including the presence of a golden boat hanging from the ceiling. “There is a lot of intimacy in this show, it’s an emotional journey,” said Surel. “It will be the first time I do a show like this. Presenting something new is not easy for an artist, but the Art and Culture Center is a great place to do this. It’s a very nurturing place, and having Michelle (Weinberg) curate the show is great for me, as she’s become a good friend and very supportive.” Nina Surel was born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and has lived and worked in Miami since 2001. She studied fashion and textile design at the Architecture & Urban Planning University of Buenos Aires, and costume and set design at the Art Institute Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires. Rubino was born in Buenos Aires in 1979, and is entirely self-taught. For the last seven years, Rubino’s work has been exhibited at commercial and art fair-venues in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Mexico City, Toronto and Miami. Oliver Wasow will exhibit a series of “Studio Portraits” of individuals or groups posed in front of painted backdrops. These are the first photos Wasow has done that have included people, and are described by the artist as “romantic and sincere, though not necessarily comfortably so.” Wasow is a fine art photographer living and working in Rhinebeck, NY. He exhibited

at the Center previously with the 2011 exhibition Artist Unknown / The Free World. The works in Gustavo Oviedo’s exhibition are a product of Oviedo’s intensive study of the terrain between Miami and Key West. Focusing on nautical landmarks, Oviedo has embarked on a thorough examination of local sites by gathering historical accounts in addition to visiting and documenting them personally. His meta-displays collapse official historical and geological research with colorful memorabilia such as antique prints, maps, tourist souvenirs and lighthouse replicas. Gustavo Oviedo was born in Paris in 1981. He was raised between Colombia, Venezuela, Mexico and now lives and works in Miami. Levitation and Gravitas is an

exploration of flying, floating and falling, and the interconnectedness of these human desires. In this site-specific work, Michael Namkung creates a 3-dimensional sound piece that channels an apparition of his body floating down the stairs, and utilizes video to sustain his body in flight. Namkung is a multidisciplinary artist whose work draws from the language of sports training and athletic performance to explore the sensory experiences of drawing under physical strain. ON THURS., JAN. 14, AT 6:30 P.M. Nina Surel, along with Michelle Weinberg, artistic director for Nina Surel: Sailing to Byzantium, will give a talk and tour of her exhibition. SAT., JAN. 16, 2016, from 1-3 pm, Nina Surel will present a Green Screen

Workshop for students in grades 5-12. Students will collaborate with one another and with the artist as they create a set, and use props, costumes and makeup to shoot a mini-video work using a green screen. Green screens allow film and video artists to place a new backdrop behind the actors and objects in any scene. This technique is used by Nina Surel in the production of the videos she will exhibit. This workshop involves working both in front of and behind the camera. No previous video or film experience is required. The workshop is $20 per student; maximum 20 students. Registration is required. For more information, call 954-921-3274 or visit artandculturecenter.org

baby Mia of the

month

Alejandra Flores

MEET OUR COVER GIRL! Mia Alejandra Flores is the precious daughter of Paula and Stanley Flores, residents of Hollywood for two years. “I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else,” says mom, Paula, who moved here with her family from Colombia, South America, at age 14. Paula graduated from Cooper City High and has been working at the office of Dr. Reyes, (Reyes & Reyes, MD, PA, 3700 Washington Street, Hollywood) since she turned 20. Paula celebrates her 29th birthday this October. Mia, on the other hand, just celebrated her first birthday in September. Paula says that her “little angel has brightened so many lives in just one year.” Mia loves to give kisses to her friends and family and

share toys with other children. She is also obsessed with magnets and she loves dancing; but, Paula says, Mia only dances to commercials - no shows or cartoons. A star in the making, Mia struck a darling pose in the pumpkin patch at Hollywood Hills United Methodist Church and voila, she made our cover. The Flores family lives close to TY Park and enjoy walking, working out and bringing Mia to the playground. Mia was born at Memorial Regional hospital and was recently baptized at Nativity Catholic Church in Hollywood. “We are so lucky to be able to experience parenthood with such a smart, beautiful little girl," says proud mom, Paula.
