letter to the community... Happy October! This month, we shine our light on those selfless people and institutions in our city who take care of those around them, who always think about others before they think about themselves. You see them and think, (at least I always do), how do they do it? Don’t they worry about themselves? It seems that they really don’t, that they some-
how just know that if they follow their calling, their own needs will be met. We profiled a few of these wonderful people in our Community Caregivers feature. We hope that you’re moved as much as we were, and that if you can, you will somehow do your part too. But now, on to the lighter side of life. With all the development downtown, our favorite Hollywood History writer, Clive Taylor, set out to find out the backstory of the soon-to-be-redeveloped Hollywood Bread Building, on

Federal Highway just south of Young Circle. But what he found was that the real story was not the building but Hollywood Bread itself, and its ohso-glamorous owner, Mrs. Eleanor Hansberry, a different kind of Hollywood star. We think you’ll love his account of this mid-century woman about town who was, in her own way, an early feminist, and way way ahead of her time. As the election approaches, we offer you a recap of the Hollywood Commission Forum, where our candidates spoke about the issues they believe to be the most pressing for our city, and what they think they can bring to the table. There are also a lot of important, and to some, confusing, amendments on the ballot. To help you navigate those, The League of Women Voters of Broward County has prepared a website (Vote411.org ) full of non-partisan
voter information that should give you the facts you need to make your most intelligent decisions on how your city, county and state are run. We can’t repeat it enough: Voting is a right, a responsibility and privilege and should be treated as such. Every vote matters. Be prepared. And don't forget to start building your team for the Hollywood Gazette Scavenger Hunt, coming up on the weekend of December 7 - 9. Download the Scavify App now and be ready. We’ll see you there. Thanks for reading. Enjoy the issue. And watch out for those ghosts and goblins. They don't call it HollyWeird for nothing!

The Fascinating Tale of Hollywood Bread Founder Eleanor Hansberry, Hollywood's Own Mid-Century Glamour Queen
T
BY CLIVE TAYLOR
his article was originally was supposed to be about the Hollywood Bread Building on Federal Highway just south of Young Circle, about to be demolished and developed into a modern, mixed-use project, which would not carry on the Hollywood Bread name. I realized that we must have reached the point of historical amnesia when a friend recently asked me why that building was called the Hollywood Bread Building anyway. I guess I should have seen it coming. Hollywood Bread has been out of business for years now. That’s right folks, there was a real bread called Hollywood diet bread. And now with development coming to this site, I thought it was time to learn the story of the building, before the big landmark “Hollywood Bread Building” sign came down once and for all. But the more I investigated, the more I became aware that the real story was not the building but the company and its glamorous founder and president, Mrs. Eleanor Hansberry, who presided over the bread empire until her death in 1978. Mrs. Hansberry was a woman who was, as they say, way ahead of her time. Her success in business was unmatched by women of the time; she boasted once that she’s had hundreds of men working for her. Asked how she handled telling men what to do, she replied: “I have one head man, and he tells the other men what to do. But they all know where the orders come from!” Way ahead of her time. Born Eleanor Roth in Canton Ohio sometime in the 1920s, she never divulged her true age. She was once quoted as saying that any woman who tells you her age would tell you anything. Hansberry married at 15, had a baby, and was divorced at 18. She married again that same year, divorced again at 20, and then remarried again that same year. Huh???? Busy woman! And again, way ahead of her time. In her early 20s, struggling to lose weight and unwilling to give up her breakfast toast, she came up with the idea for a bread that would be low in calories and healthy. After divorcing her third husband, she kept herself occupied developing a special formula for this new kind of healthy, tasty, diet bread. Eventually, she approached a company called Elam Health Foods in Chicago with
her recipe. Her formula contained eight vegetables: parsley, carrots, cabbage, cauliflower, artichoke, lettuce and pumpkin and -- get this -- a smidge of seaweed. I didn’t want to but I have to say it again. This woman was way ahead of her time. The final product had a good flavor and less calories than a traditional loaf and the slices were thinner to shave more calories. Around this time she met, let me see I guess it would be her fourth husband, who laughed at her idea and wouldn’t put a dime to help in her quest. But he knew an investor who would. Hope Hipwell gave Eleanor $1000 in cash in return for 49 percent of the company. Hansberry hit the pavement and headed to Hollywood, California, to enlist stars to sell her bread. And that, not Holly-
wood, Florida, is where the name originated for the bread she made famous. Elizabeth Taylor, Joan Crawford, Grace Kelly, Joan Fontaine, and Judy Garland all had their pictures in the stars that adorned the wrapper of the bread. Eleanor Hansberry was a one-wonderwoman show on a mission. Her bread company never had a bakery, at least not while she was alive. Instead she sold franchises of her bread recipe to bakeries across the country. Hollywood Bread would ship the mix all over the country to different bakeries, who would bake it and then distribute it to local grocers, while she controlled a huge marketing program. She had a hell of a time as a woman in the ‘40s, walking into these bakeries and convince them to bake her bread when they had their own brands. But Hansberry was a hell of a wom-
an. So she started another company, the National Bakers Services, Inc. and became its president and chairman, errr, chairwoman. Sometime around the late ‘50s or early ‘60s, Mrs. Hansberry decided to relocate herself and her company to one of her favorite vacation spots: Hollywood, Florida. After relocating to Florida, the company stopped using the movie stars but kept the stars on the wrappers. She had the building we now know as the Hollywood Bread Building built in 1969, about the same time the neighboring Home Tower was being constructed. The building is a classic mid-century modern structure with a huge cantilevered roof and a well-designed parking garage under the structure. The sign used to be illuminated and could be seen for miles, as there were no other high rises around it at that time. Lucky for us the latest proposal from the developer is to rehab this building into exclusive loft-style apartments, which will be incorporated into the larger development of this parcel. But unfortunately, as of now, we know of no intentions to incorporate the name or the landmark sign into the future development. But back to Eleanor. Eleanor made her home at 900 South Northlake Drive. This prime piece of real estate is one of the best in the Lakes, with spectacular views of Northlake and the Beach barrier island, and water on two sides. The home, as well as her many activities in the community, were featured in depth in society pages around the region Many fancy parties were held here, including one for her Northlake neighbor Mr. Bert Parks of Miss America fame. “There she is, Miss America,” it was

Community Champions
Community activist hopes to retire, seeks new leadership to sustain essential non-profit serving Washington Park
T
BY ROBIN KERR DRULARD COMMUNITY CORRESPONDENT robin@hollywoodgazette.com
here is no one in Hollywood that does more for the community than Nadine McCrea, the founder of the Community Enhancement Collaboration, Inc. (CEC), a non-profit organization started in 2004 to help her neighbors in the Washington Park community. In reality, though, McCrea has been working to enhance her community since she moved to Hollywood back in 1982. That is when she started feeding her neighbors, taking in 'latchkey' kids after school and calling in the cops when things got scary in the streets outside her Wiley Street home. Today, almost 40 years later, the CEC is facilitates a much-needed food bank, housed in a city building in the Washington Park Villas — itself developed to serve lowerincome Hollywood residents — and Nadine is proud of their accomplishments. And while the food is generously donated by a host of local corporations and supported by Feeding South Florida, Nadine explained that even with a large and tirelessly faithful team of volunteers, she can no longer run and fund the many behind the scenes expenses on her own anymore. At one point, McCrea even cashed in one of her own personal life insurance policies to keep her agency alive -- “with my
family’s blessing,” she beamed. “You do what you gotta do!” A $40,000 City of Hollywood grant in January 2018 — the largest single influx of cash the CEC ever received — allowed the organization to continue its mission of feeding the neighborhood, as well as providing a host of other services. The grant will keep it going at least through the middle of 2019. But McCrea is at a loss to predict what will keep them afloat past that date. “What we need, is capital to take us to the next level,” she said. “We need operating funds, and really, paid staff — an office manager or a program manager — who can help us raise funds, and really, pay for themselves!” And, she pointed out, that paid director cannot be herself. With the energy and beauty of a much younger women, McCrea actually took her official retirement a few years back, and her husband (and tireless supporter) Ulyses, an employee of the City of Hallandale Beach, is planning to do the same sometime in the next few years. “Volunteers are the backbone of our organization,” she acknowledged gratefully. “They’re so loyal. They stay beyond their promised hours. They make sure everything is perfect so when people come shopping at the pantry.” “But now we need help at a different level. Somebody who has the business experience to come in here and look at our operation and tell us what we need to do to take it
to the next level, who can do some fundraising, write some grants, get us the money we need so we can continue to do the work.” Nadine said she’d be thrilled to have someone even for three months, six months or a year — she just needs someone who knows how to run a business and can tell them what they need to do. “It’s already a successful business,” she explained. “I just can’t keep lying awake at night trying to figure out what to do, so I’m reaching out before I go into the panic mode and, like I did in January of this year.” McCrea manages between 18 and 30 regular volunteers on a typical week. “Five days a week, we go to two or three stores a day, pick up food, sort and stock it, weigh boxes and file reports, submit the info, put it up on the shelves so that when people come to shop they have a good experience, she explained. "Some mornings my husband and I go at four in the morning to pick up food — we would never ask a volunteer to go at that time!” “I’ve been going to SCORE [a national nonprofit that connects small business owners to provide mentorship], going to meetings about applying for grants, writing out goals, and my coaches there say, ‘Hey, Ms. Nadine, you’re doing the work, but you don’t seem to have a management team in place.’ And they’re right. My volunteers don’t want to go to meetings. They want to be here. That’s why we need people with business knowledge. The CEC doesn’t pay rent thanks to the city, but they have utilities, vehicles which need gas, upkeep and insurance, and lots of other operating expenses. So McCrea is reaching out. She’s currently in contact with Children’s Services and other government agencies, and graciously acknowledged many local businesses and nonprofits that keep the CEC going. On average, in a year, the CEC handles over 200,000 pounds of food, plus other merchandise including personal items and cleaning supplies which are donated by the same stores and organizations. But by far the biggest surprise about
CEC's annual holiday food distribution 10
October 2018
Nadine McCrea with Sandra Bernard-Bastien Nadine and the CEC, at least to this writer, is the revelation that she’s virtually been piloting this plane, in regards to the organization’s funding, without a flight plan since takeoff. Funding the organization has always been at the grassroots levels and sporadic. “We run fundraising events every year. We get donations from individuals, and some organizations like the Hollywood Women’s Club, the Rotary, the Jaycees, and the Kiwanis Club, which have all been very very good to us. A little here, a little there, sometimes banks donate money to Feeding South Florida and then there’s overflow and we get a lot of food for free, and that’s how we’ve been able to make it. But we’ve got nothing set up on an ongoing basis.” I had to ask: “Ms. Nadine, you do so much, for so many. What about you? Don’t you worry about yourself?” “You know,” she pondered. “I don’t. And I don’t know why.” “The way I look at it, God gave me this vision, and to me, it enlarged my territory, I met so many great people, and so if it’s my vision, I don’t worry about me,” she continued. “I know God’s got me. And I know my husband’s got me, and they look out for me. I’ve been doing this for 36 years. I put my life into the community, I don’t regret it. I’m thankful that I have my husband, or I would not have had the opportunity, but now, he’s going to retire and I have to start looking out a little more for the family.” Nadine hears from the people she helps day in and day out how much she is loved and honored — not just for the food, but for the respectful way she treats the people. The special way she handles their requests. The extra care she provides. “These kind of stories make me know that what we do is needed,” she said. But at the same time, I need the funds to keep it running. So I’m reaching out. I need help.” The word is out. Nadine, helper of all, needs some help. Know anyone? Maybe you? Want to help? Contact Nadine and the CEC at 954-629-9142.

South Broward High School Teacher Makes Special Ed Students Feel Extra-Special BY ROBIN KERR DRULARD COMMUNITY CORRESPONDENT robin@hollywoodgazette.com
South Broward High School's special education teacher, Abel A. Garza Jr., goes above and beyond the call of duty in making his students feel, well, special. When, 15 years ago, in his early days of teaching at South Broward, he found that the special needs students were not included in the annual student award banquets, Garza got upset. So he started what is now the Annual SVE End of the Year Awards Banquet, which has taken place on the first or second Friday of May, every year since. SVE, which stands for Specialized Varying Exceptionalities, are school programs for students with cognitive disabilities. This includes students with a variety of intellectual and physical conditions. The Hollywood Gazette sat down with this very “special” Special Ed teacher to talk about the event that lights him up. Hollywood Gazette: Abel, you're a special ed teacher. Isn't that enough? What made you start all this, um, ‘extra-curricular’ work? Garza: Some would say that [laughed the Indiana native]. And I think it's time to pass the torch. This will be my 15th year. It started 14 years ago. It was I think my third year at South Broward and I found out that they had honors and awards for all the other seniors and underclassmen, and I asked if my students could participate. My principal at that time thought that it would prolong the program and that we should have something in our classroom. But all the other students got to cross the stage, and that just lit a fire in me and I said no, that's not acceptable. So we had a car wash and the first year, we made enough to buy pizza and frames from the dollar store. The following year, we were having the same car wash and someone asked why, and I explained about the class and the banquet, and she said, have you ever thought about having trophies, and I said sure, I thought about it, but we don't have enough money, and she said, you're not understanding me, I want to buy you the trophies! Then, another lady came to the car wash, she was an older woman, and she asked me if I had ever thought about having the event in a banquet hall, and I said, of course, but our car wash only really give us enough for pizza and some certificates. And she said, you’re not understanding me, I own a banquet hall and I’d like to donate it! Well, little did I know, her grandson was one of my students! She owned a place called Bavarian Village. They helped me dream big.
After about four or five years there, the restaurant was closing and the kid was graduating, so I started to reach out to other people and I started forming new partnerships. We brought the banquet to the Hollywood Moose Lodge, then Exquisite Catering by Robert started catering for us and giving us a really big discount, then we got a DJ company, they're called Pure Energy, they've been working with me over 10 years now for a very small fee, so then we're able to raise enough money to pay for trophies, plaques and pay for all the above. The administration at the high school have been unbelievably supportive, although I raise all the funds, we don't take any from the school. There have been many companies that have been very generous with their donations for over ten years or so. And then the Moose Lodge closed, then I was 'Oh my goodness, what am I going to do now?' So now I’ve worked out a partnership with the Anne Kolb Nature Center for the last six years, so now we have a really nice banquet hall, and we have the trophies and we have the DJ and we have the catering and we have the families come in and enjoying themselves because you need to experience this once in a lifetime because it is an experience that lasts a lifetime. Hollywood Gazette: You've touched so many people through the years. Garza: It’s been very good for the kids. It’s been a great experience and a great ride. There are more than 40 kids each year, over 14 years, and their families . . . plus for most of those years, I also ran special after-school programs at other centers. Now I teach GED programs at night school. I'm always busy, always doing something, always giving back. It's been a life-changing experience for me, and for my family, who come from all over the country, and they donate. But after 15 years, it's time for someone else to pick up the torch. Hollywood Gazette: Got anyone in mind? Garza: Not really. I do hope someone will step up and continue. I haven't really got anyone in mind, but I'm sure that someone will, because once you see the smiles on these kids, it will change your life. I know that wherever the next journey leads me, it won't be far away from our special needs community. These people have inspired me, helped me to understand what others might go through, appreciate them, and know how special and amazing they truly are. Of all the populations, I believe in my heart that the disabled are the least respected and I think that people like myself must continue to fight for them, for their acceptance, and to appreciate them just for who they are.

Rayfield Family Literacy Fosters Inclusion Through Education BY ROBIN KERR DRULARD COMMUNITY CORRESPONDENT robin@hollywoodgazette.com
hat happens to special needs students when they age out of the public school system? It’s a question that communities are faced with more and more these days, as social services shrink and populations grow and families disperse. The question nagged constantly at Dr. Senetta Carter, a school educator of exceptional students, 15 years ago, when she saw a preponderance of students unable to graduate high school because they couldn’t pass the FCATs. And not all were members of her exceptional student community. So she and another teacher started working with these students, helping them to get either a GED or diploma, clearing the path to a paying job. Today, what started as a small literacy program has developed into the Hollywood-based non-profit Rayfield Family Literacy Inc., a daytime school program serving people with a variety of special needs and named after Dr. Carter's late brother. Additionally, the program now includes the Rayfield School of Excellence, an approved Florida Private School for grades K through 12. “We started out helping people with disabilities and no diplomas, hence the word ‘Literacy’ in our name,” explained Carter, now the principal of the school, “and now we’ve developed into a fullservice adult day school that teaches job skills, financial skills, life skills, and actually provides paying jobs for our ‘kids’ -- and creates a sense of community that explains why we have the word ‘Family’ in our name as well.” Rayfield was opened in 2003 in Central Hollywood and moved to its current location on Polk Street near Dixie Highway in 2014. Its unassuming entrance conceals an impressive collection of buildings which include offices, classrooms and workrooms where a total of about 175 students aged 22 and up learn, socialize, work, and interact with others seven days a week, including holidays, and generally take ownership of this place that, for several hours every week, they call home. While not officially a faith-based
organization, Rayfield is run by mostly faith-based people. It has a small board of directors that guides them, and works closely with ten churches that support them. It receives no ongoing specific funding but sustains itself on Medicaid via the students, along with occasional grants. Everything else, Carter said, is donations. The school continually holds local outings to places such as restaurants, parks, and businesses, and employees and students are always at work decorating the many colorful offices and classrooms to reflect changes in themes, seasons and holidays. The school hosts monthly dances in the onsite cafeteria, and frequent events like a Prom and a Winterfest Ball, where the art and dance classes get to display their talents. “Our goal is to make our developmentally disabled students ‘community appropriate’, ”continued Carter. Inside the warren of rooms is a great buzz of activity, where students, teachers, and volunteers work on life skills, educational skills, financial skills and work skills...and work. Rayfield has contracts with companies including Flanigans, Headliners and Badia Spices for in-house piecework, where students work together packaging products for retail distribution, and are paid weekly for their output. They're then capable, thanks to their training, of counting and handling their wages. “They like working, being connected to the community,” noted Carter. “They feel accomplished, part of the working world.” Even more importantly, the students have created and read each day their own “bill of rights,” which reminds them that they matter just as much as anyone else. They run a weekly food pantry every Saturday where they feed about 400 people in the community, as well as periodic community activities like a recent back-to-school event where they distributed free school uniforms, book bags, and school supplies to local children, in conjunction one of the churches. “It’s important that they have the sense of giving back, to know that no matter how little you might have, there is always someone with less,” stressed Carter. “That just because you have a disability doesn’t mean you don’t have
ownership.” By ownership, Dr. Carter means a sense of family, especially to those who have little other. 95 percent of Rayfield students live in group homes and spend at least some holidays at the school. “We provide ‘wraparound services’ -- we fill the gaps," she said. "We offer family, employment, job skills, even grandparents! Kids need family, they need mature people in their lives, and we have a volunteer program through AARP where have mature adults come in and bond with them, talk with them, and listen to them, and work with them to talk through their difficulties. “To many of our students, we are
their family,” she declared. “We are here together, we’re open and here for them, they always have somewhere to go and someone to be with, holidays included. "And that," she says warmly, "is us." Rayfield Family Literacy currently has openings and is hoping to find more people who want to learn job and life skills. Hollywood's Exceptional Theater Company Creates Exceptional Opportunities for People of All Abilities BY ROBIN KERR DRULARD COMMUNITY CORRESPONDENT robin@hollywoodgazette.com
"I live for drama," said Erica Notari, winner of a Lifetime Achievement Award for 2018 from the Exceptional Theater Company (ETC). Erica, herself a special needs actress, always goes the extra mile to support her fellow actors. And she's not the only ETC actor that feels that way. All the actors at ETC work tirelessly together to put on shows guaranteed to entertain and delight their audiences, and they have a great time doing it. also is always out and about, leading the way for people with all kinds of disabilities to be a part of mainstream Florida life as much as they can. She was a model in the FUNclusion fashion show last year, and also met her "Prince", A.J. Paoli, through ETC. The couple shares so much love that Christine, who is on the waiting list for a heart transplant, was recently told by her doctors that her condition was improving, a situation they could attribute only to love and happiness. The Exceptional Theater Company is a 501(c)(3) non-profit theatre school serving over 200 Broward adults with special needs. Ask the funeral director, Denise Davis Why should I prearrange my funeral? Have you heard this before?... Let my kids handle it
If I have life insurance to pay for my funeral, isn’t that enough?
Whether you choose traditional burial, mausoleum entombment, or cremation, removal from the state or country, determining your final disposition is a personal decision. Your wishes should be specified in your prearrangement documents as well as clearly discussed with family ahead of time. Many options are available to commemorate a life. Don’t leave the burden or stress to your loved one.
No. Usually life insurance, as well as final expense insurance, provides a one time, lump sum benefit after a death has occurred. Plus insurance payments take a few weeks to receive after some one dies. However, there is no guarantee that the funds will not be consumed by the expenses that result from a long illness or serious accident. Plus insurance cannot make decisions that are required at the time of need. Who do I call, where do I start with all arrangements, what are my religious beliefs. Plus if children are out of state, how would they know who to call locally?
Who would take care of my arrangements if I die suddenly? Do you have an attorney? Do you have clergy? Which child would be the one? Many people do not have children, who would be the one to do everything? Attorney? Guardian? Friend?

FUNclusion Event Offers FUN for All Through Entertainment BY ROBIN DRULARD & DAVID VOLZ Yessenia Leyva knows what it means to live with a disability. Born with spina bifida, she knows first hand the many roadblocks that one can encounter, both physical and intellectual, when navigating a world built for the able bodied. Rather than let her condition hold her back, though, Leyva chose to let it catapult her into the stewardship of two successful businesses that tackle head-on the things that often stop the physically and intellectually disabled. One business, Disability Programs and Training, or DPT Solutions, provides needed services, programs, and training resources for those who need assistance in becoming independent and selfsufficient, in business and in life. Yessenia Leyva with soccer player The other business, much more on the fun side, is FUNclusion, a multisensory Andres Cruz and another friend at event for creative, cultural and educational FUNclusion activities and presentations. think that most of the attendees were people with different exceptionalities.” That, she said, is the major reason for the existence of the event — to allow people with disabilities to have a day where they can just get together and not be “different.” Leyva knows that facing a disability means more than just dealing with physical limitations; there is also the problem of rejection. “I know what it’s like to be excluded from opportunities. It hurts,” she said. “It is not OK to exclude people who have disabilities.” Leyva organized FUNclusion as an event open to anyone but designed to give people with disabilities a chance to get together and have some fun. “I want to promote inclusion and I want people with special needs to come here and have a good time,” she said. The event included a fashion show with special needs models, complete with music and a very enthusiastic audience. There were games, vendors, performances, a wide variety of delicious food, music with local 12 year old DJs Amira and Kayla, dancing, and a special visit from local celebrity DJ Laz. Kids were lined up all day for free haircuts from the BuzzBoxx-DoBetter Project,
and the Progressive Firefighters Association (PFA) Charities, Inc. of Miami-Dade and Broward were on hand to provide security and demonstrations for kids. Serg A. Mesa of Lifeline Insurance & Financial Consulting, a sponsor of FUNclusion, said his goal is to help people with disabilities succeed in the business world. “Many people with disabilities struggle, especially as they get older,” he noted. “I want to help them as much as I can, especially to become employed and to make a living.” Andres Cruz, one of the models, enjoyed being part of the event. He has spina bifida and a passion for athletics, especially soccer. “I love soccer. I play and I help other kids learn to play soccer,” he said. “This event was a lot of fun.” Mia Ellis, who has Down Syndrome, enjoyed being a part of the fashion show. “Mia loves to perform and she belongs out there,” said her mom, Debbie Ellis. Stephanie Perkins was honored as the queen during the fashion show. She said she had fun and liked being the queen. And FUNclusion was just that: fun. Able-bodied people as well as people who live with physical difficulties came together, and everyone had a good time.

McArthur High School Football Team is Undefeated BY DAVID VOLZ The McArthur High School football team is an up and coming powerhouse program. New Coach Pierre Senatus has led the team to a 5-0 record going into the homecoming game Friday night. “We are doing well. The players are buying into the program. They have a strong work ethic. I am focused on building the team the right way,” said Senatus. The Mustangs have developed a great passing game which gives them a key advantage in games. Senatus stresses the importance of working hard on the passing game. “During the summer we participated in a lot of 7 on 7 games. This helped us build up our passing game. We are working very hard on passing,” he said. Senatus also stresses the importance of
getting ready for college. “We have visited college programs we are doing many of the things college teams do. We want our players to be ready for college.” Most of the McArthur players have grown up in Hollywood and they love to play football. Quarterback T.J. Smith played very well against Nova. “It felt good to win. To be successful requires a lot of practice and consistency. You need to be calm and collected on the field,” he said. Smith has received interest from college programs including Rutgers, University of South Florida and Pittsburgh. Billy Pierre caught six passes and scored two touchdowns during the Nova game. “To be good in football you have to practice,” he said. Pierre has received interest from the University of Central Florida.

Broward to return surplus CRA money for affordable housing programs in Hollywood On Sept. 25, the Board of Broward County Commissioners voted to approve an Ordinance for an Interlocal Agreement among the Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), the City of Hollywood, and Broward County, that will permit the City to spend Beach CRA Tax Increment Funding (TIF) in areas outside the boundaries of the Beach CRA District. The areas, approved by the County, are Low-toModerate Income Areas (“LMI Areas”), defined as follows: Geographical areas (calculated on a block group basis) within the City in which more than half (>50%) of the residents have an annual median income (AMI), adjusted for family size, that is eighty percent (80%) or less of the AMI for Broward County, Florida, as published by the Florida Housing Finance Corporation for the applicable year. According to reporting by Larry Barszewski of the Sun Sentinal, "Hollywood stands to get back $3.7 million returned to the county the last two years and $3.6 million the county is expected to receive in the coming budget year. There’s also $1.5 million expected this year that the county will keep, potentially used to help support an affordable housing trust fund that would be available for projects countywide." This is a developing story. Check hollywoodgazette.com for updates.

Some of the cost pressures include a flat tax rate, fees for service, pension costs, tax base development, health care, and ongoing collective bargaining negotiations. Recommended modifications include general obligation bond special election costs, fire rescue and inspection fee enhancements, ten part-time school resource officers, replacement of vehicles, citywide beautification capital and grants matching for large capital projects. The City also agreed to pay the salaries of ten part-time school resource officers. Other items of interest include the hiring of a deputy fire marshal and about $510,000 for the new fire rescue trucks. About $1,200,000 will go for self-contained breathing apparatus for Fire Rescue. $1,000,000 will go for new police vehicles. And $750,000 will go for landscaping improvements. There will be a circulator vehicle to transport people throughout downtown and the beach. The capital improvement plan includes a grant match for safe routes to school. This means sidewalks and signs to make it safer for children to get to and from school. The plan also includes sewer and water line replacement and lifts station replacement.

ill You Still Love Me Tomorrow, The Loco-motion, Don’t Bring Me Down, Take Good Care of my Baby, Some Kind of Wonderful…and on and on. The duo responsible for these hits, Carole King and Gerry Goffin were a pair in every sense of the word. Their partnership produced a generations worth of Pop, Motown and Rock hits. The norm of the day for a songwriting duo was for one person to provide the words and one the music. That’s how the complimentary skill-sets were assembled by the music publishers of the day. This was the formula. Today that same hit song often comes to life differently. Sometimes a writer contributing to a hit, doesn’t even get credit. In the pop world, often unknown writers land in a situation through a relationship they have, to walk into a writing session, and contribute to a monster hit. That writer will often be paid a flat fee for their part, without being named as a writer on the “record.” In 2010, a young girl named Alex was sitting in a studio with Adele and her primary co-writer Dan Wilson, from the
band Semi-sonic. Alex was a genius with words and a prodigy on Fiddle. She had been close to the late Amy Winehouse, but didn’t have much a resume as a songwriter, at least not yet. That day in the studio she contributed two lines to a little song called “Someone Like You.” You may have heard this song a couple of hundred times. That song won LOTS of gold at the Grammys in 2011. Alexis wasn’t called up on stage. As leaders at work or in the community, we never know where collaboration is going to come from. But, the end result is nearly always an enhanced, optimized version of it’s prior…earlier self. Finding fun ways to network and collaborate while “doing good” is definitely trending these days. In the workplace, and in the community. Ample opportunities exist in our communities to have fun, while actually doing “good work.” And, there are many companies out there, who have corporate social responsibility programs that make real impacts on those who reside in their communities. The very paper you read right now is filled with them, as well as opportunties on every page for every reader to get out there and make a difference.

Putting all of this in a pot, stirring and cooking it into a hardy stew, is the concept behind this year’s Hollywood Scavenger Hunt, which we’re calling “The Hunt for Good.” The Hollywood Scavenger Hunt weaves together participants looking to have a great time with local businesses and non-profits on a collaborative threeday adventure from December 7-9. In the end, everyone who participates will discover Hollywood's hidden gems and make new some new friends to boot. "We met lots of new people and got to experience many new things Hollywood has to offer" said past participant Dana Baker. "We were born and raised here and never realized some of the fun events and shows constantly going on." If you go it alone, you WILL make new friends! Rock it as a team, and the memories you will make together will last a lifetime. Participants are tasked with fun and challenging missions that are still being planned and coordinated. And local nonprofits will benefit! How? Because some of the missions are sponsored by local companies who in in turn…adopt a local non-profit! And unlike Alexis, all will be acknowledged and appreciated for their contributions. This year's kick-off party will be held at the Hollywood Jaycee Hall on Thursday, Dec. 6. Mark your calendar, I can't tell you why but I can tell you I'll be there and you won't want to miss it. Have fun, do good! Sign up soon, as the clock is ticking. (Pssst…..check out the app Scavify, you’ll need it for the hunt.) All together now, get out there and do it. Questions about the hunt? Visit hollywoodscavengerhunt.com or call 954-962-8180.

Hollywood Approves Ordinance to Define Medical Marijuana Dispensing Facilities as Pharmacies
The Florida Legislature passed a Medical Marijuana bill REPORTER in July of 2017, yet there are curdtv@gate.net rently very few medical marijuana treatment centers in Florida. A lot of that has to do with regulations and clarity on how to classify Medical Marijuana Treatment Center Dispensing Facilities. Recently, the Hollywood Commission amended the zoning and land development regulations by revising the definition of a pharmacy to include a medical marijuana treatment center dispensing facility. Also amended was article three, the distance separation requirements, which is 500 feet from a k-12 school. This is per state law. This amendment means the city is now in compliance with state law. To comply with state requirements, the text amendment will amend Article 2 and Article 3 of the Zoning and Land Development Regulations to include Medical Marijuana Treatment Center Dispensing Facility and to provide required distance separation requirements from schools. A pharmacy is defined as a retail establishment primarily offering goods for sale and on-site dispensing of prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs or both. It may also offer other services such as photo processing and eyeglass care. For purposes of this definition, a Medical Marijuana Treatment Center Dispensing Facility shall be treated as a pharmacy. A medical marijuana treatment center dispensing facility may not be located within 500 feet of a K-12 school unless the city approves the location through a formal proceeding open to the public. At the February 1, 2017, City Commission meeting, the City Commission passed and adopted Chapter 109a of the City of Hollywood Code of Ordinances titled “Medical Marijuana Businesses” establishing regulations and guidelines for such use. As this was an amendment to the Code of Ordinances, it did not require a recommendation by the Planning and Development Board. Following the adoption of this chapter, the State adopted legislature stating that cities are not permitted to establish supplementary regulations as it relates to Medical Marijuana Treatment Center Dispensing Facilities; and shall treat such uses in the same manner in which pharmacies are treated.

HOLLYWOD BREAD BUILDING CONT. FROM PAGE 7
said that he had to sing for his dinner that night. During the first 18 years she lived in her Hollywood home, she put on 6 major additions. But it wasn’t all fun and games at 900 South Northlake Drive. One night in 1963, four masked men broke through Mrs. Hansberry’s bedroom door and stole ten fur pieces and a $12,000 diamond ring. Wow, that’s a big rock! They tied up Mrs. Hansberry with her designer drapery cords and her scarves, cut the phone lines and left her there. The story is that even in tragedy, the glamorous Hansberry maintained her signature flair. After managing to free herself, she fled to the home of her neighbor Thomas Wohl, then the owner and president of Home Federal Savings, who called the police. In addition to her home, she also owned a luxury yacht named 'the Miss Hollywood,' which was followed by 'the Miss Hollywood II' and then 'the Miss Hollywood III.' Like her bread company, I guess they just kept getting bigger. While here in Hollywood she opened The Hollywood House of Beauty on Galt Ocean Mile. It was an exclusive salon offering facials and hair styling, and she imported the best stylists and facial specialists in the country. In addition to her salon, she also owned a Hollywood diet cola company, the Elam Health Food company, where she had tested her original bread recipe, and the Hopkins-Patwell advertising agency. She held extravagant parties in her home and on her yachts, and appeared in magazines and television shows -- she was a contestant on What’s My Line with Panelists Arlene Francis, Dorothy Kilgallen, Bennett Cerf, Buddy Hackett,
surprise guest Joey Bishop and mystery guests Lucille Ball and Bob Hope. By any measure, Mrs. Hansberry was a huge success. Eleanor Hansberry passed away in 1978 and her funeral was held at the Little Flower Catholic Church in the city she loved so much. A few years later Hollywood Bread went out of business, along with her other businesses. Her home was demolished many years ago, and a large mansion built in 2000 stands there today. The Hollywood Bread Building is the last remainder we have of this incredibly strong, independent, smart, businesswoman. In an era of male-dominated society and business, Eleanor Hansberry was a woman who was definitely “way ahead of her time”.
