Hollywood Police Department opens Economic Crimes Unit BY DAVID VOLZ CORRESPONDENT
dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com
The Hollywood Police Department introduced a new Economic Crimes unit on August 15. The unit will be based at the West Network Center. It will be staffed by two detectives and a sergeant. They will focus on education, outreach and the investigation of economic crimes and identify theft, a growing problem in Hollywood and Florida.
“Economic crimes are affecting millions of people. South Florida is an epicenter of economic crime and identity theft,” said Hollywood Police Chief Frank Fernandez. “We are establishing this unit to deal with this problem.” According to Hollywood Police Records, in 2011, there were 853 economic crimes reported, in 2012, 899 economic crimes were reported and in 2013, 931 economic crimes were reported in Hollywood. Chief Fernandez said that sophisticated criminals will break into as many as 20 cars at a time not to steal radios but to look through the glove box in an effort to find personal papers or credit cards. This can be used to steal identities or credit card information. “We want people to make sure their cars

are locked and personal information is placed in the glove box or the trunk,” said Chief Fernandez. One reason that people are getting involved in identity theft crime is that the penalties are not as severe as they are with narcotics and violent crime. Few sentencing guidelines have been established for identity theft and the legal establishment has been more focused on putting drug offenders and people who have committed violent crimes in jail for longer periods of time. This is why people need to be more careful about protecting their identity. “If it is too good to be true, it probably is,” said Hollywood Detective Larry VanDusseldorp, one of the officers working in the economic crimes unit. “It is important for people to monitor their accounts and freeze their credit if they believe something is wrong,” he said. “Everyone is entitled to one free credit report a year.” One problem is the IRS scam. Someone will call a person, say they are with the IRS and that the victim owes back taxes. The person will demand the victim send money or face legal consequences. “The IRS will not just call and say send us money. They have official documents and will send a person to your home if there is a problem,” said VanDusseldorp. And you can call the IRS at 1 800 908 4490 if you think you have a identify theft problem that involves IRS. Other problems include lottery scams and

people calling and claiming a love one is in trouble in a foreign nation and money should be sent immediately so the person can come home. Detective Natalie Perez and Sergeant Marano are the other Hollywood Police officers working at the unit. Hollywood Commissioner Richard Blattner spoke at the opening of the unit. “These cases take a lot of time to solve and there are sophisticated criminals committing identity theft. We need this unit,” he said. The unit will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and on Wednesday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. so people who work during the day can report economic crimes to the unit.

The City of Hollywood has begun the planning and permitting process Phase I of the renovation project on the Stan Goldman Memorial Park which is located at 800 Knights Road in Park East. The dog park will be known as “Hollywoof” and will include 20,000 square feet with a secured fence area for large and small dogs. The park will have dog play and training equipment, fresh water troughs for dogs to take a drink, new pedestrian walkways, theme park benches, waste bins, signage and security lighting. There will be enhance entrance signage, landscaping and road upgrades at Johnson Street and Knights Road. These improvements will make the park more welcoming to visitors. There will be a new paved entrance drive, pedestrian and vehicular entrance gate and a parking lot for 15 vehicles. This parking lot will be for use by people who want to use the existing pavilion and children’s playground.
Renovations to the existing restrooms are planned. The planning and permitting of the estimated $375,000 project are now in progress. Construction is expected to begin in January 2015 with
the new “Hollywoof” Dog Park grand opening scheduled for early May 2015. This will be a new dog park for Hollywood and add to the four dog parks in the City. Dog Beach which is not considered a park is another place for dogs to romp. This new dog park was one of the top five requested items by Hollywood residents. It has received preliminary Commission approval. A bid has gone out to contractors and final approval is expected once a final bid has been received. Funding for the park is in place. “This dog park will make Stan Goldman more desirable for residents to enjoy and recreate,” said Chuck Ellis, director of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts for Hollywood. “There are a lot of neighbors around this park. The hope is that this will bring more residents into the park.”

Hollywood CERT wants condominium residents to complete basic lifesaving training program By David Volz The Hollywood Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is making a strong outreach to residents who live in Hollywood condominiums to receive basic life support training. This trainings offered free by CERT so that in the event of a hurricane or other emergency, people have the necessary skills to be self-sufficient. “We have a large number of residents who live in condominiums on the beach. A lot of them are retirees and transplants from other communities and they may not understand how serious an evacuation order is. Also, there are situation that arise at condominiums, there may be some situation that arise that don’t rise to the level of an emergency but could be handled by a CERT member. This would include light fire suppression, basic first aid and CPR. We are teaching basic
lifesaving skills,” said Jaime Hernandez, emergency management coordinator for the City of Hollywood. He oversees the CERT program. Training offered through CERT takes place once or twice a month. In midSeptember, CERT will offer training in CPR and basic First Aid. The training takes place at the Hollywood Emergency Operations Center at 2741 Stirling Road. People interested in participating in this training should e-mail Jaime Hernandez at jahernandez@hollywoodfl.org.
$800 million school bond under discussion BY DAVID VOLZ CORRESPONDENT
dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com
Broward School District Superintendent Robert Runcie is working to promote an $800 million bond to the residents of Broward County. They will get a chance to vote on the bond on November 4. Runcie said that if the bond passes, more than $100 million of the money will be spent on Hollywood schools. This would be the largest portion of any Broward city. “This is based on the needs of Hollywood schools. Many of the buildings in the City are older and some maintenance has been deferred.” But Runcie does not want people to think too locally regarding the budget. Many Hollywood students attend magnet schools in other cities and there are students from outside the City who attend magnet programs in Hollywood. If voters approve the bond, students will see substantial upgrades to technology in the schools. There will be much higher level of computer and high technology instruction in their classes. Now, there is one computer for five students. The goal is to increase the number of computers in the system so that eventually there is one computer for each
student. “Most testing is done online. The bond will have a significant impact on technology in every school,” said Runcie. “There will be more opportunities for students in art, music and athletics. There will be more music equipment for students,” said Runcie. Most of the bond money will go to the improvement of the school facilities. The money will be used to repair and replace roofs, walls and air conditioning systems. Also, money will be put toward the funding of construction of a single point of entry for every Broward County school. Also improvements will be made to each school’s sprinkler system, fire alarms and emergency lighting. “We want to make sure that every school is healthy and safe. Having one point of entry
will improve safety and we want to make sure the indoor air quality of each school is of the highest quality. We want all schools to be in good condition,” said Runcie. Runcie emphasized that the bond will address critical needs in the school system. “Every school is going to get some impact,” said Runcie. “We will do a comprehensive assessment on every campus. We may replace some buildings if we determine it will cost more to fix the building rather than build a
new one.” Runcie emphasized that the process has been transparent and that the bond is needed to repair and improve schools. Community meetings are taking place to educate members of the community on the importance of the bond to education. There will be seven town hall like meetings called “A Conversation with the District” from September 8 through October 27 at various district high schools. There will be one at Hollywood Hills High School on September 22 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. This bond is needed by the school system. In May 2008, the Florida Legislature reduced the tax on property values that provides capital revenues for school districts to address facility and equipment needs from
$2 per $1,000 of taxable value to $1.75. In 2009, the legislature further reduced the tax rate by another 25 cents, to $1.50 per $1,000 of taxable value. Because of this loss, the Broward County school system was forced to cut $1.8 billion in capital projects for schools and facilities. This means that Broward taxpayers are spending less on education than in previous years. Forty percent of the District’s school buildings are more than 25 years old and the average age is 27 years old. In all buildings, roofs, air conditioners, electrical systems and plumbing have a limited lifespan and need repair or replacement. A Broward County homeowner with a home valued at $225,000 will realize an average increase in capital outlay tax of $50 per year over the life of the bond. The homeowner’s capital outlay tax will be about $127 less per year than it was in 2007. This means the homeowner will pay about 26 percent less in capital outlay than seven years ago. A Broward County condominium owner with a condominium valued at $105,000 will realize and average increase in capital outlay tax of $20 per year over the life of the bonds. This is $72 less per year than it was in 2007. This means that the condominium owner will still be paying 33 percent less in capital outlay tax than seven years ago.

Boulevard Heights one of many neighborhoods to celebrate National Night Out By David Volz Hollywood residents got together to celebrate the National Night Out at various Hollywood community centers on the evening of August 5. Residents enjoyed food, fellowship and the opportunity to talk with police officers and City leaders in a social atmosphere. Ellen Boyarsky, president of the Boulevard Heights Neighborhood Association helped organize the National Night Out event at the Boulevard Heights Community Center. She worked with other volunteers to prepare hotdogs, chips, cookies, cake and other food items for the event. “We had police officers, a bounce house, balloon animals and face painting. This was
a nice community event,” said Boyarsky “We want to encourage people to get involved with Crime Watch.” Judy Bates, past president of the Boulevard Heights Neighborhood Association said, “It is important for people in the neighborhood to get together. This gives people a chance to meet their neighbors.” Major Manny Marino of the Hollywood Police Department said he was glad to see people getting together for a community event. Marino said he hoped people would get involved in Crime Watch and work with the police to prevent crime.

LadyFest puts women front and center Sept. 19-20 BY TORI BERTRAN PUSH Miami, a newly formed collective of artists and activists in Miami, is pleased to announce that LadyFest Miami will launch its first event open to the public at venues in Wynwood’s Arts District on September 19 and 20, 2014. Miami got a taste of what LadyFest had to offer at an invitation-only event held at O Cinema last spring, combining discussions, art, music, food, and panel presentations centered around women in marginal communities and women’s needs. The feedback received from over 150 guests was clear: we need more women-centered programming like this in South Florida. LadyFest Miami is a DIY (do it yourself), volunteer organized, led, and run festival made by and for women, trans folks, LGB people, kinksters, people of color, genderqueer, queer, and their allies. The objective is to build a sustainable community and celebrate diversity through critical dialogue, cultural performance, and artistic expression. With its forthcoming event, LadyFest Miami will continue showcasing local talent, creating safe spaces for dialogue, and empowering women to create their own narratives and discussions that the community might not be addressing. Envisioned by a group of grassroots activists desperate for events beyond circuit parties and cocktail receptions, LadyFest hopes to bring to light topics like reproductive justice, race, gender and sexuality, feminism, environmental justice, polyamory, kink, entrepreneurship, religion, activism, and professional development, all under one roof. Friday, Sept. 19 kicks off the weekend’s events with a mixer to be held at the Light
Box at Goldman Warehouse in Wynwood. Saturday’s main event will be held at The LAB Miami and Wynwood Café directly across the street. On Saturday, September 20, LadyFest Miami will include over a dozen workshops, live entertainment, lectures, panel discussions, and artistic events, as well as
a free community “Swap”, where you can find or leave clothes, housewares and more. Everything that doesn’t get taken will be donated to Out of the Closet, which offers free, confidential HIV testing and prevention counseling. Sponsored by SAVE, The Homeless Voice, OPS Events, Screen Engine and
Wynwood Canvas and made possible by Light Box at Goldman Warehouse, Wynwood Café and LAB Miami, LadyFest is open and inviting to everyone, of all ages and backgrounds. Visit www.Ladyfestmiami. com to register. For more information call Charo Valero at 786-442-8199 or email info@ ladyfest.com.

HEALTH NEWS
Should Oil Pulling be part of a good Oral Hygiene routine? Q:
Many patients have asked us recently: What is Oil Pulling and how does it work?
A: Oil pulling is the practice of swishing oil in the mouth for 15 – 20 minutes. It is called oil pulling because it is supposed to pull out bacteria, viruses, fungus, pus and mucous out of the mouth, cleansing the mouth and allowing it to heal. Advocates of oil pulling claim it is supposed to help with general health issues like blood sugar control, arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, headaches, allergies, asthma, back pain and many more. In the book Oil Pulling Therapy, Bruce Fife, N.D., originator of the term Oil Pulling says, “In my opinion, oral health is the most important aspect of overall health. The health of our mouth reflects the health of our bodies. If we have a healthy mouth, we will have a healthy body.” Dr. Fife makes reference to the Focal Infection Theory and further states, “We’re an entire system, what goes on in the mouth, goes on in the entire body.” There are numerous claims that oil pulling is a practice derived from Ayurveda (Traditional Hindu Medicine) dating back thousands of years. However, the teachings of Ayurveda refer to “oil gargling”. This is done by placing about 10 drops of tea tree oil in
water and gargling with it. Vasant Lad, M.A.Sc (Ayurvedic Doctor) in his textbook of Ayurveda, states that toothpaste should be astringent and bitter. He proposes that if sweet toothpaste is used, the saliva will become thick and rich in calcium, leading to the development of tartar on teeth. Modern advocates of oil pulling prefer the use of coconut oil and the recommendation is to swish about 2 teaspoons of oil around the mouth for 15-20 minutes a day. The oil should be discarded in the trash and not in the sink since it tends to become thick and may clog the plumbing. Rinsing the mouth is a great complement to an adequate oral hygiene routine and it does offer a great benefit by diluting and reducing the amount of bacteria present in the
mouth. However, there is little to no scientific evidence supporting the claims made by advocates of oil pulling. There are however, some reports of Lipid Pneumonia, a medical condition caused by aspiration of oil into the lungs. Given that as health professionals, our first and foremost duty is to Do No Harm, the American Dental Association recommends rinsing the mouth with the use of products that carry their seal of approval. A 30 second rinse with an ADA approved product twice daily as a complement to brushing and flossing should be a part of everyone’s daily oral hygiene routine. - Hans Sperling, DMD Dental Care Center of Hollywood We Care for People, not just teeth.

South Broward High School joins global community of Cambridge schools BY RACHEL WARADY MAZOR With the opening of the school year this August, South Broward High School opened a new chapter in its 100year history with the implementation of the Cambridge Programme. The Cambridge Programme is a high school program in affiliation with Cambridge International Examinations that offers students the opportunity to earn the prestigious Cambridge International AICE Diploma along with their diploma from South Broward High School. The program is offered to students who apply who have achieved a minimum of 3’s and 4’s on their FCATs. South Broward High School has been awarded Cambridge International School status by Cambridge International Examinations and is approved to offer Cambridge Programmes and qualifications, including Marine Science, Physics, Mathematics/Calculus, Mathematics/ Probability and Statistics, English, Thinking Skills, General Paper, Art and Design, French, and Spanish. “We are so excited to bring courses to the Hollywood community that promote rigor and high standards of learning while keeping a global focus in our curriculum,” said Olayemi Awofadeju, principal of South Broward High School. Cambridge Programmes and qualifications are recognized and valued by universities and employers around the world. are both nationally and internationally recognized and valued by universities. The Cambridge Programme courses are considered college-level courses so students earning the AICE may receive as many as 45 college credits based on their scores on the Cambridge examinations depending on the university they attend. Universities around the world recognize the AICE Diploma including
Harvard, Yale, MIT, Stanford and local favorites: University of Florida, Florida State and University of Miami. The AICE Diploma along with community service hours can also qualify students for the Florida Bright Futures Scholarships. In addition to offering the Cambridge Programme and in response to increasing demand for computer science professionals in the workforce, South Broward is also placing an emphasis on students receiving a background in technology. Last year, South Broward was the State of Florida winner of a $10,000 grant in collaboration with code.org to bring computer coding to the classroom. This grant has been used to build an infrastructure within the school to offer an innovative multi-tiered computercoding curriculum to prepare students for the next phase of their lives in this everexpanding job market. South Broward has also earned recognition in its Hospitality and Tourism Program and their Marine Magnet Program continues to set the bar higher each year. This year construction was completed on a new pool which allows students to work on their under-water robots. In addition, the school was recently named a LEEO (Linked Education and Employment Outcomes) School linked in with industry business partners to earn practical real world experiences in the fields of global logistics and maritime technology. With the implentation of these programs and now the offering of an international diploma program, South Broward High School sits poised to give the best and the brightest, most talented students every competitive advantage to face the challenges of post high-school education.

Shuttle service from Tri-Rail to ten stops in Hollywood By David Volz The Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) is in negotiations with Tri-Rail to develop a shuttle service that would take riders to and from Tri-Rail trains. There would be ten stops and the shuttle would go as far west as the courthouse. The objective would be to have a seamless line of public transportation. People would be able to ride the Tri-Rail and then get on a shuttle and to a specific location. Shuttles would run on the half hour.
The goal is to have the shuttle system running by October, according to Maggie Viola, spokesperson for the Hollywood

San Francisco that the city had designated as lacking public open space. That two-hour installation ultimately evolved into a global movement after a photo of the temporary public park – complete with sod, a bench and a tree – circulated the Internet. After receiving requests to create the PARK(ing) project in other cities, Rebar designed a how-to manual to empower people to create their own parks to challenge existing notions of public urban space and help redefine space to suit specific community needs. “We hope our PARK(ing) Day event in Hollywood encourages people to rethink how they view urban public spaces and get involved in discussions for creating distinctive places for people to gather that encourage them to get out of their cars and experience their surroundings,” said Jorge Camejo, Executive Director of the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA). PARK(ing) Day has grown from that single temporary park created in 2005 to 975 parks in 162 cities in 35 countries, as of the last official count in 2011. PARK(ing) Day, which takes place on the third Friday in September, is intended to promote creativity, civic engagement, critical thinking, unscripted social interactions, generosity and play. The PARK(ing) Day concept has been expanded in recent years to address a variety of social issues, including the planting of temporary urban farms and the building of free health clinics. The Hollywood CRA is collaborating on the downtown PARK(ing) Day event with City departments, area businesses and Barry University, which has a satellite campus at 421 N. 21st Ave., between Taylor and Fillmore streets. Sponsors are also being sought to provide benches and refreshments. For additional information on PARK(ing) Day in Downtown Hollywood or sponsorship opportunities, email Kimberly Stefanski, Planning and Economic Development Coordinator for the CRA, at kstefanski@hollywood.org. Hollywood leaders spearhead local ‘Girl Rising’ campaign to combat human trafficking in Broward Broward County is the #1 county in Florida for human trafficking. “It’s hard to believe that this appalling abuse is taking place around the world and right here in our backyard,” explains Elizabeth Sanjuan, owner of Gallery 2014. “We have learned that something can be done to combat it: Educate Girls! There are 66 million girls still missing from classrooms worldwide.” Girl Rising is a global campaign for girls’ education that began as a groundbreaking feature film and has grown into a thriving movement. It uses the power of story-telling, partnership, and media to unite individuals, companies, organizations, government leaders and foundations - all who know that educating a girl is the highest return investment of our time. Educating girls is the most powerful and effective way to keep girls safe and to address global poverty. Local concerned citizens including Marta Prado, Sandra Mackesy- Reyes and Elizabeth Sanjuan have put together a local chapter called Girl Rising South Florida.
WE’VE GOT ALL THE CHANNELTS
They are planning a Girl Rising event in Hollywood on October 25th. This event will encompass a movie screening at the Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center, followed by a Cocktail Reception at Gallery 2014. Since the launch of the movement, the Girl Rising Campaign has raised over $5 million for girls programs and in-country awareness. The Girl Rising film has been seen by over 1.5 million viewers. Girl Rising South Florida has committed to donating the funds raised at our event to 3 outstanding organizations: Girl Rising, Girl Up, Broward Human Trafficking Coalition. Information on ticket sales for the
event is forthcoming. In the meantime, they are in need of sponsors and donations. With your support, you will give the opportunity to many of the 66 million girls that would not have the chance to an education. Educating girls can break the cycles of poverty in just one generation. Please consider forwarding the movement and investing in girls’ education by sponsoring our screening of Girl Rising or donating what you can at www.girlrisingsouthflorida.com. HOLLYWOOD TO EXPAND MOBILITY FOR BEACHGOERS WITH FOUR ADDITIONAL MOBI-MATS BY CARON CONWAY
FEATURE CORRESPONDENT
caron@hollywoodgazette.com
The City of Hollywood is paving the way for greater access for beachgoers traveling by wheelchair or stroller with the addition of four new MobiMats, semi-permanent blue plastic pathways that lead toward the Atlantic Ocean. Hollywood was a pioneer in the state of Florida in February 2009, installing four 6-foot-wide ADA-compliant Mobi-Mats of varying lengths within the city’s Central Business District at Connecticut Street, Johnson Street, New York Street and Tyler Street. The mats have been such a success with wheelchair users, parents pushing strollers and barefoot beachgoers seeking relief from the hot sand that four additional mats are being installed at Keating Park at Magnolia Street and at Oregon Street, Harrison Street and Carolina Street near the Hollywood Beach Marriott. The City of Hollywood was among the first in Florida to obtain authorization from the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to install its first four
The City of Hollywood was among the first in Florida to obtain authorization from the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to install its first four beach accessways. beach accessways. The lightweight Mobi-Mat material was selected for its easy installation, fast removal prior to a storm event, reliable traction and costeffectiveness. The mats, which are funded by the City of Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) and supplied by Coastal System, require a Coastal Construction Control Line permit and must
be determined to pose no threat to sea turtles during the turtle-nesting season. “I think the Mobi-Mats are a practical and minimally intrusive way to accommodate beach access for all users with a measure that does not impact marine turtle nesting,” said Jorge Camejo, Executive Director of the CRA. Three of the new Mobi-Mat locations – Keating Park, Harrison Street and Carolina
Street – are at stops along the City’s ADA-accessible Hollywood Trolley, with Keating Park also offering ADA-compliant restrooms, making a beach excursion more convenient for all visitors, whether they travel on wheels or on foot. Designed to improve mobility, ease parking demand and traffic congestion, and enhance the overall visitor experience, the trolley is $1 per person per ride and free for children ages 5 and younger. It departs approximately every 30 minutes from more than a dozen beach and downtown locations, and operates from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, and from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. More information is available at www.visithollywoodfl.org/trolley. “It’s exciting that we have four mats and are getting double that, and are also expanding the coverage area to accommodate residents and visitors in multiple areas of the city,” said Kimberly Stefanski, Planning and Economic Development Coordinator for the CRA. For more information on Hollywood’s Beach and Downtown districts, call the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) at 954-924-2980 or visit www.hollywoodcra.org.

DEVELOPMENT NEWS
Two major developments will improve Downtown Hollywood Volz
By David
THE RECENT DEMOLITION OF THE TOWN HOUSE MAKES WAY FOR NEW DEVELOPMENT
The City of Hollywood is hoping that two major developments in the downtown area will lead to a major resurgence in the area. Hollywood Circle will feature an upscale 25 story mixed-use development on Young Circle. It will be designed to appeal to a diverse group of residents and visitors. It will include 397 upscale rental apartments designed for people who want to live in an exciting urban environment. The Circ will be a uniquely branded 104-room boutique hotel that will be part of Trust Hospitality’s Desires Hotels@ collection. There will be a 46,000 square-foot Publix Supermarket and about 15,000 square feet of additional retail space on the ground floor for shops, restaurants and other businesses.
PHOTO BY TOM OLSEN Hollywood Circle will be in a position to meet the need for new, high quality residences and business space in Hollywood’s downtown district and is expected to attract people to the new urban center. Recently an older apartment building was demolished to make room for Hollywood Circle. Young Circle Commons will feature 229 apartment units and 25,000 square feet of retail space.
HOLLYWOOD CIRCLE IS A PLANNED 25-STORY MIXED-USE DEVELOPMENT ON DOWNTOWN HOLLYWOOD’S HISTORIC YOUNG CIRCLE.
“We are part of a program to rebuild Hollywood’s downtown. We have removed blight from the downtown area and knocked down old buildings,” said Chip Abele, the developer of the two projects. “This will make a positive contribution to the Arts Park. This is a major development for Hollywood and will bring about 400 families to the area.” Jorge Camejo, executive director for the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) said he believes the two
projects will be a major improvement for the downtown Hollywood area. “This will boost the tax base for Hollywood. This project is good for the City,” said Camejo. Hollywood City Manager Cathy Swanson-Rivenbark said she believes the projects will be a major improvement for downtown Hollywood and will attract businesses and people to the area.

World Meditation Hour set for ArtsPark in Downtown Hollywood on September 21 as part of the International Day of Peace BY CARON CONWAY
FEATURE CORRESPONDENT
caron@hollywoodgazette.com
Proponents of peace are invited to participate in World Meditation Hour as part of the International Day of Peace, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Sun., Sept. 21 at the ArtsPark at Young Circle in Downtown Hollywood. There is no charge for the local event sponsored by the Brahma Kumaris, Hollywood Meditation Groups, which offer free meditations as a service to the community at the ArtsPark, area libraries and other venues. This is the second year the Hollywood Meditation Groups are inviting the entire Hollywood community to unite in solidarity with peace-seekers around the world in reaffirming the United Nations’ commitment to peace. The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by a resolution of the U.N. General Assembly as an annual day of ROZ REICH
nonviolence and ceasefire. Hollywood Meditation Groups founder and director Roz Reich of Hollywood said people of all ages and meditation experience are welcome at the local World Meditation Hour, whose purpose is “one-on-one, to create a collective consciousness of peace,” to demonstrate a show of solidarity on a community level and to make a statement as part of a global effort. “This is going to be really something,” said Hollywood Meditation Groups instructor Etta Stevens, “because so many people are searching for peace of mind, they’re searching for contentment, they’re searching for happiness. Meditation is the answer, in practice and in dedicating themselves to it.” This year marks the 30th anniversary of the U.N. General Assembly Declaration on the “Right of Peoples to Peace,” which recognizes that the promotion of peace is vital for the full enjoyment of all human rights and is this year’s theme. The U.N. invites a global cessation of hostilities, both political and personal, as well as public awareness and education on peace-related issues to commemorate the day.
Bring a chair or blanket and come and add your vibrations of peace. The Downtown Hollywood observance of Peace Day will end with entertainment provided by inspirational singer Laura Havel. Reich asks participants to bring a chair or blanket along with their “vibrations of peace.” Reich, 68, a retired business education professor, found in meditation the means to accomplish “the lifetime goal for myself, which was to be the embodiment of peace, love and joy, and abundance,” she said. Reich has been “on this spiritual path” for 26 years. After retiring 17 years ago after 30 years of service to Miami Dade College,
Reich hosted meditations in her home until “the spill-out was so great, I had to find public venues,” she said. The Hollywood Meditation Groups currently serve about 100 people a week at the various venues. “The bottom-line description of the work we do is ‘When I change, the world changes,’” Reich said. The Hollywood Meditation Groups’ current Hollywood schedule includes the ArtsPark at Young Circle (6 p.m. every third Sunday); T.Y. Park, Pavilion 4, 3300 N. Park Road (6 p.m. Mondays); the Hollywood Branch Library, 2600 Hollywood Blvd. (10:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays); and the Joseph Meyerhoff Senior Center, 3081 Taft St. (10 a.m. Mondays in English and 9:15 a.m. Tuesdays in Spanish). Other venues are the Hallandale Beach Branch Library (10:30 a.m. the first and third Saturday); the Dania Beach Paul DeMaio Branch Library (10:30 a.m. Saturdays); Carver Ranches Branch Library in West Park (10:30 a.m. Saturdays); and Peace Place in Miramar (6 p.m. every first Saturday). For additional information on World Meditation Hour or the Hollywood Meditation Groups, call Roz Reich at 954-962-7447.

I joined the Marine Corps to better myself and my future. I didn’t see college working out, and I wanted to provide support for my mother and sisters.“
Rct. Yadelsy Ortiz, a 20-year-old native of Hollywood, Fla., is currently training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C., in hopes of earning the title of United States Marine. Ortiz is training with Platoon 4030, November Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, and is scheduled to graduate Sept. 5, 2014. “I joined the Marine Corps to better myself and my future,” said Ortiz. “I didn’t see college working out, and I wanted to provide support for my mother
and sisters. I’ve been thinking about joining for the past three years, and I finally just committed to it.” Ortiz graduated from Hollywood Hills High School in 2012. Approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. amera James has enjoyed tremendous success as a basketball player. She led South Broward High School to three girl’s state basketball championships. At the University of Miami, she scored 2,406 points, a school record for both men and women. She played two years of WNBA basketball with the Washington Mystics for the past seven years has played professionally abroad. She now plays professional basketball in Israel. And Tamara James wanted to give something back to her community. So she organized the Tamera James Fun Day at the Dr. Martin Luther King Community Center in Hollywood on August 2. The event featured bounce houses and a climbing wall, basketball clinics and games and healthcare checks. About 700 book bags with school supplies were given away. And it was a chance for kids in the community to come together and socialize. “When I was growing up in Hollywood, there was nothing like this. I wanted to hold an event for the kids in the community,” said Tamara James. Richard Walker, who helped run the event was pleased to see people coming together to have fun and receive book bags. “We want to make sure the kids are prepared for the upcoming school year. We want

Going back to school doesn’t have to mean leaving technology behind! Going back to school does not have to be all textbooks and papers! You can use your computers and smartphones not only for fun and gaming, but also to help you study and learn! Many apps and websites have been created with students specifically in mind. By combining learning and organization with easytouse technology, they are becoming the
newest supplement to education. For students who are always on the go, smartphone apps are perfect! The free app Finish allows students to input assignments they need to do and redeem prizes, like coupons for free food, by accomplishing them. On the other hand, an app like Evernote allows students to type and sync notes, pictures, and voice recordings from an iPhone to evernote.com so that they always have access to their notes. Apps are very handy when it comes to things you always want quick access to, from a dictionary to a periodic table to a calculator. Yes, there is an app for that! The Dictionary.com app provides over two million defintions for when a dictionary is not handy. The Chemical Touch is an app that provides an interactive, color coded periodic table. iFormulas is an amazing reference for any and all math formulas from algebra to geometry. gFlash+ is great for those who learn through constant repetition, as it allows users to create flash cards with embedded audio or video. If you prefer using computers, have no fear! There are many websites that can do everything an app can do with a different
interface. New York Times’ interactive website, The Learning Network, allows kids to stay up to date on current events with easy to understand articles. Quizlet, along with its app counterpart, allow users to create online flash cards and take multiple tests and play games with the information. EasyBib is the goto website for science projects and research papers. Students input what they know about the sources they used and it creates the perfect bibliography! SpellingCity is a great tool for those who need to remember how to spell words of any difficulty level. After inputting the words, students can take practice quizzes so they are ready when the real test is taken. Lastly, if you want to learn while helping others, try FreeRice. For every question that you answer right from a variety of subjects and difficulty levels, the nonprofit organization donates ten grains of rice to someone in need. While some people may see technology as preventing learning, it can actually do just the opposite by making learning fun! Are there any websites or apps that you love to use for school? Tell us on Instagram using the hashtag #hgback2school !

Film and media class for teens coming to Hollywood By David Volz Teenagers who want to learn more about the media may want to consider participating in People 4’ People Productions. The organization is moving from New York City and will bring an interesting form of foundational learning called Film Media Literacy Education to Hollywood’s Boulevard Heights Community Center beginning this fall. People 4’ People will offer free classes to high school students from 14 to 18 years old who have an interest in art, technology, film and video production and community engagement. The program offers 80 hours of informative, engaged skill building exercises and creative activities that build artistic confidence and teach students how the world of moving images mirrors, differs and directly affects their attitudes, perceptions and experiences in everyday life. Students will receive training in how to develop ideas for film projects, storyboarding, screen writing, directing, camera operations, lighting and sound to prepare them to transfer the knowledge
they develop to videos and films they learn to create that communicate in their collective voice. Classes will take place on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 5 to 9 p.m. throughout October and November. In December, the students will present a public film screening of their work. Jennifer Saunders, who runs the People 4’ People program, has been a film media literacy educator for 25 years and has been a New York City Public High School Film Teacher. “I take diamonds in the rough, spark their creative and intellectual juices and grow change agents. With easy access to the widest variety of content in the history of the world; the good, the bad and the ugly, teenagers need to know how to discriminate between high quality information, marketing hype and silly or harmful junk. They also need to know how to support the welfare and health of the communities they live in using 21st century digital technology,” said Saunders. People who are interested can call the Boulevard Heights Community Center at 954 967 4235.
