Life’s Reflections

Derek Andre Harris was born July 28, 1968, to Perry and Lillie Knox. He was the oldest of three children and attended Treadwell High School. He confessed hope in Christ at an early age at Princeton Avenue Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Napoleon Rodgers. As a member of New Nonconnah M.B. Church, he was a faithful member until his sudden demise. He was a member of the music ministry, where he played the guitar. Derek was a very kind and positive man. He always gave you a friendly smile and never met a stranger. As a youth and young adult, he loved music so much that he saved his money and bought his first guitar, as he was inspired by “Prince.” He was determined to learn how to play the guitar without taking any professional lessons. This was definitely Derek’s gift from God. His God-given gift made room for him. Little did he know that it would allow him to travel around the world playing for and with Musical Icons, such as Albert King, Gladys Knight, Shirley Brown, Reverend Al Green, and so many more. Derek has also played at several local churches, outings, events, weddings, venues on Beale Street and throughout the mid-south area. He was preceded in death by his father, Perry, and one sister Cassandra. He leaves to cherish his passing; one son Travarus and two daughters Kayla and Jasmine, one grandson Jayce; his mother Lillie Jackson (Elgin) and a sister Tina Knox; two nieces Camille and Keyona; two nephews Christopher and Tony and a host of uncles, aunts, and cousins and a special friend and neighbor Ms. Sandra Lynn Clinton.
