Mattie
Louise Taylor Little, a beloved member of the Memphis community, departed this earth on May 31, 2023.
Born on January 1, 1938, in Memphis, TN, Mattie was the cherished daughter of Estes and Margaret Taylor. She touched the lives of many through her dedication to education and her unwavering faith.
After graduating from Melrose High School, Mattie pursued her higher education at Tennessee State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1961. At TSU, she demonstrated her courage and commitment to equality by participating in lunch counter sit-ins for civil rights alongside prominent activists and classmates, such as the former mayor of Washington, DC. Marion Berry. Her bravery and determination left an indelible mark on the civil rights movement, inspiring countless others to join the fight for justice.
Her thirst for knowledge led her to City College in New York City, where she obtained a master’s degree. Mattie’s compassionate nature led her to work at a school for blind students in New York City, where she made a profound impact on the lives of her students.
Years later, Mattie returned to her beloved hometown of Memphis, where she devoted her talents and passion to the Memphis City Schools until her retirement. As an educator, she touched the lives of countless students, leaving an enduring legacy of wisdom and inspiration.
Beyond her professional achievements, Mattie found solace and strength in her deep-rooted faith. She was an active and devoted member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, actively participating in various organizations. Her commitment to her church community and unwavering faith was a testament to her character and kindness.

Mattie was preceded in death by her loving parents, Estes and Margaret Taylor, and her three brothers, Estes, James, and Kevin. Although she has departed from this earthly realm, Mattie’s memory will forever live on in the hearts of those she leaves behind. She will be dearly missed by her sisters, Jacqueline A. Taylor, Margaret Morman, Dorothy Taylor, and Gladys E. Taylor, and her brothers, Robert E. Taylor, Maurice Taylor, Thomas A. Taylor, and John E. Taylor, her devoted caregiver and partner, John B. Myers and a host of nieces and nephews who are fortunate enough to have her in their lives.
Mattie Louise Taylor Little will forever be remembered as a compassionate educator, a devoted member of her community, an advocate for civil rights, and a source of inspiration for all fortunate enough to know her. May her soul rest in eternal peace.
