“Solider for the Lord”

Sister Reacie Covington-Tinsley was born July 27, 1921, in Winona, Mississippi, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Dennis and Rosetta Covington. She attended Normal School in Winona, MS and later moved to Memphis, TN. In July 1950 Reacie married Charlie Tinsley, they combined their families, and to that union, four children were born.

She attended Cosmetology school in Memphis, and after receiving her Cosmetology license, she worked as a color technician in various salons. She was also a member of the Democratic Club of Memphis where she served as secretary for several years. While in Memphis, she united with Olivet M. B. Church, where she served until she moved her membership to St. Peter M. B. Church. As a member of St. Peter, she worked as a part of the Helping Hands and Willing Workers ministry, a Sunday school teacher for the Junior girls, missionary leader of the Red Circle Girls, Baptist Training Union children story hour leader, chair of the culinary ministry, advisor to the youth choir, member of the TEL #1 Sunday school class, the adult choir and the usher board until she transitioned to her “New” home. Sis. Tinsley was also very active in the Shelby County District Association, women and youth department, the Tennessee Regular B. M. and E. State Convention, youth and women’s department, a member of the state choir, where she was honored as the oldest “active” member of the state choir. She worked many years with the Hamilton Community Initiative and served as an Ombudsman for the state of Tennessee, at the Highlands of Memphis and Kirby Pines for 18 years. On February 16, 2017, at 11:57, Reacie Tinsley was called home to sweet eternal rest. We are thankful and incredibly grateful for her long and precious life. She was the Matriarch of our family, an advisor, a teacher, a comedian, a “huck-a-buck” dancer and the best Mother, Grandmother, Godmother, Sister, Aunt or Cousin, anyone could have. She leaves to cherish her precious memories children; John Covington, Charlene Thornton (James), Carmen Purdy (Carl), Charles Tinsley, 10 sisters and brothers, 31 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, her church family and all the members and children she shared “treats” with at St. Peter M. B. Church, which she loved dearly, in her words, “This is MY church.” God in His infinite wisdom saw fit to allow her good friend Shirley Richardson to transition on the very same day. A Loving Farewell to MOM, We learned from you! We leaned on you! And most of all, We love you!
