Reflections Reflections of Life

Roosevelt Harris, Jr.,was born March 5, 1937, in Lucy, Tennessee-the third child of Roosevelt Harris, Sr. and Elizabeth Bell Harris.

“Ro” (as he was known to all) attended E. A. Harrold School in Millington, TN. He proved to be a hard working man – always striving to be his best. In the early years, he was employed as a deliveryman by Ruth Phillips Flower Shop in Millington and later worked for Plough, Inc., in Memphis. As life would have it, “Ro” was soon bitten by the “own your own business” bug! He subsequently managed two corner groceries (Nite-N-Day in South Memphis and PeeWee’s store in North Memphis). He achieved his dream when he purchased, owned, and managed Harris Grocery in Orange Mound at Park & Airways! He later obtained his Commercial Driver’s License, purchased his own gravel truck, and then contracted his hauling services with Lehman-Roberts Asphalt Contractors from which he retired. On December 26, 1965, he married his loving and devoted wife, Mary Elizabeth Mitchell Harris – a union that lasted almost 53 years – a testament to a lifetime of love when you keep God first! “Ro” united with Greater New Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church based on Christian experience, and later rededicated his life to Christ by being baptized again under the leadership of Pastor Arthur L. Snow. “Ro” was a man with very strong faith and reminded his family often that “it was nobody but God” that had kept him. Through his love for God and family, he shared a profound sense of wisdom. He also generously shared his cooking and grilling skills as “The #1 Chef”. “Ro” was preceded in death by his parents, Roosevelt & Elizabeth Harris; two brothers, Robert & Charles Harris; and two sisters, Rosetta & Susie Harris. Those left to cherish a life well-spent are his wife, Mary Mitchell Harris; three sisters: Gracie Harris Taylor of Arlington, TN, Magnolia Harris Jones, and Lillie Harris Preyer of Memphis; one son, Gerald Mason of Muncie, IN; one daughter, Patricia Harris Morehead (Ricky) of Savannah, GA; a nephew he raised as a son, Mitchell K. Brooks (LaToya) of Killeen, TX; four grandchildren: Tiffany (Antonio), Genera, Gerald, Jr., and Tyrone; seven great-grandchildren; a God-daughter, Laura McCracken; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and loving friends.
