RECORDS BOLSTERED BY GENOMICS FOR PASSIONATE BREEDERS

hen it comes to making breeding decisions, Margaret and John Cockerell have the best toolkit any farmer could ask for.

The couple, who milk registered Jerseys at Waaia in northern Victoria, have a lifetime of breeding records, thanks to meticulous herd recording. This valuable dataset is about to be topped-up with genomic – DNA – information as the couple start working with DataGene as part of the Ginfo program. “At the moment we work from pedigrees and production – from the herd recording – but genomics gives us another tool to look at when making breeding decisions,” John said. “We will be able use both these records and work from there,” Margaret added. Ginfo is a group of herds with exceptional records which are used as the dairy industry’s reference database for genomic information.

Margaret and John operate Warrain Jerseys milking up to 330 in a splitcalving system. Growing-up on dairy farms, the couple have milked for 45 years and are passionate breeders. Data has played a pivotal role in their farm management. Monthly herd recording and somatic cell count testing has recently been bolstered by pregnancy testing using milk samples. “That works quite well to help us manage who’s in calf and who’s not in calf,” Margaret said. “We also have collars on the cows for heat detection as well.” Software program Easy Dairy is used to record herd information. The heritability of somatic cell count problems has been something Margaret has been especially interested in. “I’ve just noticed the odd cow and her daughter here and there, if the cow has a high SCC, so does the daughter,” she said. “Mastitis is something that can cost you a lot of money and it is something you need to keep looking at.” For the Cockerells, dry conditions in recent years have highlighted the importance of managing mastitis. Margaret said mastitis was something they were alert to as the risk had increased due to hand-feeding cows because there’s limited “nice fresh green paddocks”. Cows with “chronically high” cell counts are the first to be culled as Margaret said they are costly animals. Another reason why herd recording is vital, according to Margaret. DataGene extension officer Peter Williams said great records help all dairy businesses. “You can’t improve something you can’t measure, if you want to improve something you need to know where you stand,” he said. “The Cockerells have a lifetime of herd data and it puts them in a good position to fulfil their breeding goals.” Chasing production and conform-

ation, Margaret and John have a clear vision of what their ideal cow would look like. “We are quite happy to have cows that are very dairy,” John said. “Our herd is averaging over 7,400 litres a lactation; they are high producing Jerseys so we have to look after them and we are quite happy to do that.” “Conformation is the key to deepbodied cows, and we like cows with flatbones – that aren’t too frail, they have a bit of strength – especially now we are chasing milk flow,” Margaret said. “Good udders are important.” Breeding for quality udders is where Margaret hopes genomic testing can really pay dividends. “Hopefully it will help us increase production without cows falling apart,” Margaret said. “We will know more about their udders and ligaments and the traits we want.” “Genomics will also help us find out the good genetic animals and it will enable us to put a dollar value on them,” John said. “That’s the key to a saleable item.” Warrain Jerseys has always produced excess heifers and these are sold to local farmers. The stud also sells bulls. Margaret and John want to use genomic testing to identify the genetically superior heifers to retain and which bulls to rear. This practice has become increasingly important with the dry weather and high irrigation water costs. The herd has traditionally been milked across 90ha but this has come down to 40ha due to the dry weather. The Jerseys are fed about 8kg of dry matter/day on the feedpad and receive 5kg/cow/day of grain mix. Some cows in the Warrain herd have exceeded 10,000 litres during their lactation. Margaret and John attribute this extra production to genetics. “The only way to improve your herd is through genetics,” John said. “Good cow families and good bulls which throw the traits you want.”

Betty’s Chat and Chew made its debut in the 1980’s providing members with a chuckle, recipe and some useful hints. Anne Heazelwood was before her time in 85 with her calf blankets and a novel way to recycle and old electric blanket. They are now becoming an essential item in everyone calf management practices.

CHAT & CHEW COLUMN Merseybank Stud, P.O. Box 87 Latrobe, Tas. 7307. Here's a hint for calf rearers, especially in cold districts. You may like to keep it for a more appropriate season; not many people will need to rug calves during the next few months. On the other hand, they might easily be turfing out old electric blankets about now. We always used to make bag rugs for sick calves until one year we had a run of scour and no proper hessian bags. Casting round in desperation for a warm fabric I found defunct electric blankets just the thing. Their wires are easily removed and rugs can sown but cut out so the existing tapes are in the right places for neck and belly straps. I think pantyhose make better ties, though. With them a rug can be put on and off without being undone, and must be more comfortable. I don't do any hemming - simply cut up the blankets as required and make holes with a knife for the ties. My calf rugs have survived three seasons' use and several trips through the washing machine. Any pre ms or calves that scour in cold weather find themselves dressed in brightly coloured wool for that all-important warmth. Properly fitted, the rugs never come off, especially if they have a belly strap in addition to ties at the neck and lower thigh. Anne Heazlewood. MELT AND MIX CHRISTMAS CAKE 1.5 kg (31b) mixed fruit ½ cup sherry, rum or brandy 1 green apple 1 tablespoon honey or golden syrup 1 cup brown sugar - firmly packed 4 large eggs 250g (8 oz) butter 1¼ cups plain flour ¼ cup self-raising flour 1 teaspn mixed spice 2 tblspns (extra) sherry, rum or brandy. Place mixed fruit in large basin. Add sherry, peeled and coarsely grated apple, honey or syrup, sugar and eggs. Mix well with wooden spoon to break up any large lumps of fruit. Add cooled melted butter, sifted flours and spice. Mix thoroughly. Place in a deep 23cm (9") cake tin. Bake in slow oven until cooked (approx. 2¼ hours). Remove from oven. Brush over with extra sherry, rum or brandy. Cover with foil and leave until cold. MELBOURNE SHOW TIT-BITS Greg and Elaine Sessions won the Most Successful Exhibitor award at this year's Royal, when they were presented with their card, Greg took if back to the Superintendant's office and said they must have made a mistake, they assured him they had not. After Greg got back Page 28

to the shed and talked it over with Elaine they decided that there must have been a mistake, so back they both went to the Superintendant and asked for a check of the score. After a phone call to the heirachy of the R.A.S. they were told once again that they were definitely the winners and that there certainly was no mistake. Congratulations Greg and Elaine. We always seem to have problems with .toilets on the way to the Show, John Baker went into the toilet on the train with a lady but he tells us it was only to help her with her respiratory machine. Murray Maloney, the night before judging, during his dinner headed for the toilet, he took the wrong door and ended up in the kitchen. Every shed has a ' 1Mr. Perfect'' and our it seems, by his own admission is Alex McKenzie. When I asked Alex what had happened to him at the Show he answered w i t h - "well this is the first show that everything has gone right, I didn't drench the cows with the wrong stuff, I put the teat spray on the right place, everything has been to perfection. I am organised, I haven't exaggerated, underestimated anything and no one has upset me or I haven't upset anyone. I think that the words of wisdom for this year's Show must belong to J a n Baker. Jan's comment at the judging of the Supreme Bull was "Gee I like those horns on the Ayrshire, I would really like to see them mounted." David Anderson threw down a bale of hay the other morning and while he wasn't looking Glen Adams threw it back up. David came down the ladder, couldn't find his hay and when Glen told him that he really hadn't thrown it down, David was wondering if the Show pressure was getting to him. Elaine woke Greg up one morning because she heard the tractors cleaning out the shed. Greg got dressed and started to walk into the shed only to find that the tractors were cleaning out the hospital pens and it was 2 a.m. in the morning. I don't think that Wayne Kuhne would ever go hungry at the Show, he goes out to the kitchen every evening and checks out what everyone is cooking and knows where to go for the best meal. New exhibitor Lisa Mowat soon made herself at home and kept everyone amused with her jokes. We always have good cooks amongst our breed and this year's honors go to Lynton Broad whose mushroom soup left a lot to be desired and Harry Adams who asked" how is the nieal cooking?" when told it was on the gas, he was embarrassed by the comments by the ladies in the kitchen. Graham Plant was so excited to get to this year's Show that when he arrived, her started unloading his team but forgot to put up a race. Shirley Irvine not only had a trip to Melbourne for this year's Royal, she was racing to her cows one morning and had an unexpected trip down the aisle. Allan Feeley was looking forward to going to the Dinner so much that when he got dressed he was so confused he ended up with his tie attached to the wrong end. On Farm Challenge Results

The Goulburn Murray Jersey Breeders Club (GMJBC) held its Club 'On Farm Challenge;' on Thursday 24th October, judged by Darryn and Ellie Hourigan. There were over 80 cows judged across the competition and prizes were kindly sponsored by Genetics Australia. Three of the Club’s cows went on to win their age groups in the Great Southern Challenge and bring home the Baker-Farrell Most Successful Club trophy. Jersey Australia Member Encouragement Award Nominations are now open for the 2020 JA Youth Encouragement Award to be presented at the 2020 AGM to be held in Noosa. The Jersey Australia Member Encouragement Award has been developed to recognises young adult members who are: • Aged between 20 and 35 as at end of February 2020 • Actively engaged in and supportive of registration and classification either in their own, family or employers’ herd • Actively involved and participating in local Jersey club activities. The nominations for the award are required to be submitted to Jersey Australia by clubs no later than the end of February 2020. 2020, here already! We hope everyone enjoyed a safe and cheerful Christmas as we look to the new years activities. A Christmas break up dinner and one final farmwalk signalled an end to 2019 for us. The club visited Taughboyne Jerseys, L. Finney and K.McGarvie, near Camperdown. Thanks to all that came along, pictured at right are a few photos of newer sire daughters, and farm details – * Milking herd 220, milked in 40 unit rotary. * All heifer calves reared, with surplus sold. * Farm size 654 acres * Also runs a herd of 320 does and replacements, mostly of dairy goat breeds, and a small group of Boer and Kalahari Red meat goats. * Have been using polled Jersey sires since 2010, 82% of 2018 born were polled. * Sires used 2019 include Santana P, Predictable PP, Overlord PP Demos P, Promo P, Dalton P, Salsa P, Solar PP, Polled Gold PP, and sexed David. * Pastures renovated or over sown as needed, good performers recently include Power, Platinum, and Jivet ryegrass and Moby barley, but attempt to introduce Hummer fescue failed after 1st season. * Farm produces all silage and hay required, with some vetch purchased for yearlings.'

BIG CHANGES AHEAD FOR VISITORS

t’s been nearly 20 years since Queensland hosted a major Jersey Australia AGM and conference and organisers say there will be a lot of changes for people to see. The Sunshine Coast club is organising the annual conference on June 2-5, 2020 and will offer a mixture of tropical features and farming excellence. Accommodation will be in Noosa and farm tours will stretch into the nearby hinterland of the Sunshine Coast, taking in Jersey dairy farms along with other farming operations. The last major AGM and conference in Queensland was around 2000 and coorganiser and Sunshine club president Darrin Grevett said delegates would notice big changes. “Industry wise it has changed a lot,” Darrin said. “There are a lot less cattle up here. There are less farms but as far as industry and houses have gone, they have been booming. We’ve had a flip. “Anyone who hasn’t been to our area for a long time will definitely notice the change. Suburbia has moved in and taken over some of the farms which have moved further out. “The land is too valuable and the dairy industry hasn’t been profitable enough to keep people in.” Today there are 10-12 farms in a 50-km radius of the Sunshine Coast. “That’s not a lot when there used to be about 100,” Darrin said. State secretary Dianne Reeves and Darrin are the main driving forces organising the conference. The Sunshine Coast club is the largest of the Queensland clubs, but its numbers have dwindled. “From 10 years ago until now, the number of active members has more than halved,” Darrin said. “But the quality of cow is certainly there, as good if not better than ever before, and farming operations are better than ever. We’ve had to go that way.” About 80 per cent of the region’s dairy farms are Jerseys. “Jerseys are the cows that have stood the test of time,” Darrin said. “There

have been farmers who have gone from Holstein into Jerseys and some have been mixed and moved to nearly 100 per-cent Jerseys. “Jerseys are better suited to the climate, and the main processors that moved into the area in the past 10 to 15 years were paying on fat and protein, which is where Jerseys excel. “That’s still a major driving force and leads to the Jersey cow well and truly taking over in our area.” The organisers have planned a fun and informative program. Delegates will arrive on Tuesday for rest and relaxation time. Potential accommodation resorts have been identified, offering the tropical and beach feel expected in the Noosa region, with plenty of luxury and relaxing and at a moderate price. In addition to a full day of Jersey farm tours, delegates will follow the Cooloola farm food trail to see how people are making boutique businesses from their land. The tour will include coffee and ice cream shops, berries, macadamia nuts and others. A variety of local farms will open their gates and share their knowledge about their farming practises and how they are helping the region grow its reputation as major food producers. “We wanted something totally different so people get to see the farms in operation and try the local produce,” Darrin said. “A lot of southerners wouldn’t get to experience these farms because of the different climate.” The conference will finish with a Noosa river cruise and dinner. The organisers hope at least 60 people attend. “We want as many as we can get so we can show some really good local farms,” Darrin said. “It’s giving us an opportunity to integrate with suburbia and show that dairy is still important here in the region.” Darrin has one important message to those planning to attend the conference: “Bring your smiles”.

ueensland might no longer have the quantity of farms from years gone by, but there’s nothing wrong with the quality. Visitors to the Jersey Australia AGM and conference on the Sunshine Coast next June will learn something different from four different farms. The on-farm visits will take in Glen-Echo Jerseys, Yandavale Jerseys, Adadale Jerseys and River Ridge Dairies, each offering their own unique insight into farming in northern Australia. Conference so-organiser Darrin Grevett said the onfarm tours would show how farmers are adapting to tough climate conditions, using technologies and diversifying to remain viable. “All four are unique in the way they run their farms,” Darrin said. Farm numbers in the region are now limited but that has meant those remaining have had to improve and innovate to survive. “It’s not that the quality has gone, it’s just the quantity,” Darrin said. The Parker family’s Glen-Echo Jerseys milks more than 600, and is probably the biggest Jersey farm in Queensland. Chad Parker recently added a shed so his milking herd is protected from the weather. The 126mx36m shed is successfully easing the herd’s heat stress as they are fed undercover during the day and can graze at night, also easing pressure on paddocks. The stud has been going for more than 50 years and Chad is the third generation to farm the land at Kenilworth. River Ridge Dairies at Nambour milks about 250 cows, with owners Ray and Catherine De Vere adopting all the latest technologies to make sure they are as efficient as possible. The farm has been family-owned for three generations. Shane and Sharon Paulger’s Adadale Jerseys is a working dairy farm producing 2.5 million litres of milk a year and a campsite. The dairy farm situated on the Mary River has been operated by the family for more than 60 years. Kenilworth Camping on the River is open to vans, tents or even a swag, providing a “true-blue” camping experience on a dairy farm. Yandavale Jerseys is the Grevett family farm, milking about 150. The dryland farm has been the recipient of five consecutive platinum production awards.

linton Keir has no illusions about the state of the dairy industry. At 23, Clinton has been around dairy for a decade and has his sights firmly entrenched on progressing towards farm ownership. He knows it will be tough, but the young Queensland Jersey enthusiast and breeder is up for the challenge. “Up here in Queensland there are tough weather conditions and tough prices but they’ll turn around. I’m up for it…getting our own land is the ultimate goal.” Clinton credits school for sparking his interest in dairying. At 13 he went to Nambour State College which runs a small-scale commercial dairy and shows cows. “I got interested then and it branched out from there,” he said. “The school program was definitely an influence. I started showing at the Toowoomba Show when I was 13 in Grade 8 and I’ve been working on farms since I was about 14. “I did a traineeship on a dairy farm through school and then worked full-time on farms, moving into a management role for more than 12 months. “From then on, the goal has always been to get a farm, whether it’s leased or shared. Eventually I want to get a

farm, as long as the industry can hold on and I think it can.” Clinton lives on the Parker family farm at Kenilworth with his partner Casey Farr. He works off farm doing civil services contracting with Telstra while Casey is the farm’s full-time calf and heifer rearer. Clinton and Casey own about 40 cows that live on the farm. “The Parker family is happy to house my cows and allow me to slowly build up the herd,” he said. It has been a gradual process. “We started getting cows one at a time for show purposes, with both Jerseys and Holsteins,” Clinton said. “Then we went to dispersal sales and bought a few more cows. We’ve got a few heifers out of them and we’re slowly building the herd.” At this stage the herd is still mixed but it’s heading towards Jerseys. “At the moment, we’re very concentrated on the Jerseys. We also have a few cross-breds out of our Holsteins that we are mating back to Jerseys. “I like them both but the Jerseys are just a bit easier for us to work with. I look for the same as everyone I guess, type and production, and cows that look well and produce well.” The host farmer, the Parker family, has a Jersey herd and have been long-

time Jersey Australia members with a lot of succes in showing. Clinton and Casey are concentrating on quality as they build numbers. “We’ve spent a fair bit of money buying good genetics and using the best bulls we can find,” he said. “We’re using a lot of sexed semen trying to get heifers out of our best cows.” Clinton has progressed from showing for the school to showing his own cows and he’s gaining traction. “With my own animals, this year has been probably our best for showing, including winning Supreme Junior Champion at Gympie show, with GlenEcho TS Roberta, purchased from the Parker family as a four-week-old calf. Clinton also won the national paraders final at Adelaide Show last year and was twice runner-up in the national junior judges competition. The Parker family prepares Clinton’s cows as part of their show team, while Clinton and a friend help with the fitting. Ultimately, Clinton would love to be involved in the Jersey Australia on-farm challenges and compete at International Dairy Week. “Having the right animal that I can breed myself to compete down there is the challenge and feels like it might be a while off but we’ll keep trying.”

ueensland Jersey farmer Tim Beattie used to regularly check the rain gauge and keep tallies. Now he doesn’t bother. Like many Queensland farmers, Tim and his family are feeling the effects of a tough climate and tough prices.

“It’s pretty dire,” the Queensland state president of Jersey Australia admits. The Beattie family farms at Glamorgan Vale, about 60km west of Brisbane. Their Nobbyview Jersey Stud was established about 42 years ago by Tim’s parents Bev and Pat.

The stud was named for the mountain that separates Glamorgan Vale and Lowood, but with a slight variation. “The mountains are spelt with a K, but Dad thought that was a dumb way of spelling Nobby so he left off the K,” Tim said.

Tim is in a farming partnership between six brothers and sisters. Tim runs the farm while the others have offfarm jobs but help when they can. The farm has always had Jerseys, the only viable option for a dryland farm in southern Queensland. “There’s no irrigation and we rely on the rain, but I’ve given up looking at the gauge,” Tim said. “We were pretty good till May but since then we’ve had only maybe 50mm. If we don’t get rain soon, we’ll probably have to give up. It’s that bad.” The herd has been cut from 110 to 80. “I sold cows at the start of September to the meatworks because we couldn’t keep the feed up to them,” Tim said. “They were classified excellent cows that in better times you’d give another chance to get in calf, but we couldn’t afford to keep them.” The farm has had to buy hay for the first time since 2007, which should last until the end of February. “Normally we’re a partial mixed ration and strip graze farm but at the moment they’re just getting a bale of hay during the day, about 10kgs in the morning and again at night on the feed pad and then whatever they can find in the paddocks at night.” “We feed brewer’s grain, the extract from making beer, and mix that up with a round bale of hay on the feed pad. Usually in summer we grow millet and sorghum and strip graze the millet and make the sorghum into hay and have a couple of pasture paddocks as well which would be grazed or made into hay, but at the moment they’re bare.” Production has dropped a little but generally they have held quite well, although feed costs are a problem. Tim realises he’s just one of many dairy farmers doing it tough. “It’s all of Queensland really,” he said. “People in the Darling Downs have been struggling for the past 18 months

to two years and it’s really bad out there. Even in Far North Queensland it’s either a feast or a famine. The start of the year they had floods, now they’re as dry as anything. “The Sunshine Coast has been put on water restrictions, which rarely happens. It’s only if you’re on the coast that you’re not too bad because they get coastal showers.” The worsening drought and stagnant prices are impacting on industry confidence. “I don’t know what the government is doing,” Tim said. “In northern Victoria there’s water but it’s too expensive for farmers to use. They’ve got to pay more for the milk so people can afford to water “We’re a bit different because we rely totally on the weather. Our big challenge is milk price; it has to go up so when we do have bad times, we can afford to buy feed.” The farm is receiving up to 71 cents a litre, including bonuses, but Tim says they need a lot more than that.

“There’s not a long-term future unless things change dramatically. I’d love to keep doing it, but realistically I’m not sure. “It’s not just the weather; milk price is the big issue. If we’ve got money to put aside when things like this happen then there is a future, but not if we don’t get a decent price.” Tim predicted most dairy farmers in Queensland and NSW probably had 15 years after the $1 a litre milk hit, a problem he blames manufacturers for allowing to happen. “I could see hardly any left in 15 years; all the drought is doing is speeding that up. There are going to be a lot of farmers go out in the next eight to 10 years.” Tim said there should be a base price of 75 cents a litre for every Australian farmer, with extra allowances for regional costs. “That way people can afford to do things. At the moment, all we’re doing is feeding cows.”

Young Monto Jersey Fan Wins National Photo Competition

en-year-old Oliver Pailthorpe from Monto in northern Queensland has beaten people of all ages and from all states to win Jersey Australia’s 2019 photo competition. But Oliver has his eyes set on bigger achievements…he’s already planning to develop his own Jersey stud. Oliver’s pensive shot of one of his family’s Jersey cows caught the attention of judges who were impressed by its moody atmosphere and clear composition. Oliver is a passionate young Jersey fan who spends all his spare time breaking in and leading heifers around the family farm. He is a regular participator in the biennial Monto Dairy Festival and has led the parade for the past two years.

This year he also competed in the junior handler classes at the Gympie Show. While the Pailthorpe herd is mostly Ayrshire, Jerseys also have a significant role and are Oliver’s favourites. Oliver’s parents Steve Pailthorpe and Helen Goody say his successful photo reflects his passion for the cows. It happened by chance during a farm photo shoot last December when Helen was taking family photos. “I was taking photos of the boys for Christmas cards and I got Oliver to hold my camera while I was doing something,” Helen said. “Goldie was hanging around and he snapped a couple of photos which turned out very nicely.” The family is encouraging Oliver’s interest in Jerseys.

“Oliver is mad on his Jerseys so there are a few more creeping into the herd,” Helen said. “He wants to own his own stud and he wants to show them so we’re helping and encouraging him.” Oliver is hands-on with breeding and raising the calves. “He helps Steve pick which A.I. straws to buy, though he does pick some of them by their name. His favourite A.I. bull at the moment is a Jersey bull called Oliver”. Oliver said he liked Jerseys because they have “creamy milk, big black eyes and are very friendly”. Despite the dry and dusty conditions about 120 kilometres inland from Bundaberg, Steve said the farm was battling along okay.

2019 NSW State Jersey Show & Youth Show October 30 and 31, 2019 saw the annual NSW State Jersey Show and Youth Show held at Camden Showground, with the Jersey Australia (NSW) Inc. Annual General Meeting being held on Tuesday Evening 29 October, 2019. With the dry conditions continuing across most of New South Wales numbers were down on previous years, however, an excellent display of quality Jerseys was shown before the Judge Mr. Jeff Sayles, Bridon Farms, Canada sponsored by Jersey Canada and Semex Pty. Global Exposure Demand for Australia Jerseys in Nth America is riding the crest of a wave with leading bulls BONTINO and AUSSIEGOLD recently leading the charge for elite Australian bred Jersey genetics with high praise and demand generated through social media pages. JA is hearing the 1st shipment of BONTINO semen sold out in the US in under four days, we are sure that plenty more straws will be making their way across to the States in the very near future.

5-Star Jersey The board of Jersey Australia has made a slight change to the genomic requirements to qualify for 5-Star Jersey status. JA will now also accept international genomics as part of the 5-Star Jersey criteria. Members with cows with international genomic results who wish to use these to meet the genomic criteria for the 5- Star award can submit their results to the JA office. Results should be: • Single page • PDF format • Include date of evaluation and country of origin Please note that international data will not be presented onto Performance certificates.

Fertility Data The Jersey breed is well known for its high fertility compared to many other breeds. As a result, Jersey breeders have less fertility problems which could mean they do not collect as much fertility data. However, ongoing research to improve and update existing and add new ABV’s / ABV(g)s relating to fertility, is hampered by a disproportionate lack of key data in Jersey Entering calving dates into your farm management software does not provide enough data to accurately calculate DataGene’s fertility ABVs. The inclusion of • Insemination / Joining date • Preg test data is also critically important to ensure that all 5 measures of fertility that are used for the ABV calculation are available, helping DataGene to deliver the most reliable information back to farmers and the industry. On top of this, the data is useful for new traits, such as Gestation Length and enable researchers to add continuous improvement in the evaluation models of existing ABV’s and also improve reliability. Historical data records are just as valuable as current and new data. If you have your wall charts and notebooks handy and some time to spare to back fill your historical records then we encourage you to take the time to enter as much data as you can, noting that ABVs are better with greater amounts of accurately recorded data.

The European Young Breeders School competition was an exciting initiative in 2019 and is back again in 2020. South Gippsland Jersey Breeders Club - On Farm Challenge 2019 Results South Gippsland Jersey Breeders Club hosted our ‘2019 On Farm Challenge’ Judging took place over 2 days culminating in our Presentation Evening held at Meeniyan Footy Club rooms on Thursday 24th October. Over 65 people were in attendance comprising of Members and Sponsors. We had 19 exhibitors from across the region spanning from Wonthaggi to Yarram to Athlone and 137 Cows were judged.
