NEWLY CLASSIFIED EX-96 COW
EX96
Wanstead Valentino Fernleaf Ex-96
We liked the overall balance of Starlord’s proof when he was first released as a young sire. This has proven correct, with the added bonus of excellent semen fertility and conception rates. His daughters are clean-boned medium-sized cows with superb udders, good component percentages and excellent health traits.
Our earliest daughters have calved back in on their second lactation and are maintaining this balanced type and production.

Restructure of Association Investments
The Board of Jersey Australia has been reviewing the structure of the Association investments and has made the following changes.
Reserve Fund
The Board has established a Reserve Funds Policy which provides for the isolation of $300,000.00 of the Associations funds to be placed into a government guaranteed investment that is to be only used for the purpose of maintaining the Association operations at a period of extreme unforeseen circumstance.
Consolidation of Investments Funds
The Association remaining investments will be consolidated into a single investment fund. This will mean that the Association will no longer maintain standalone Youth and Research Funds.
The consolidation of the Associations investments will provide significant improved efficiencies in the management and administration of our investments. The Association acknowledges that members are no longer actively contributing to the funds.
The Association will continue to support and invest in youth programs such as our new commitment to Australian Dairy Youth and funding of youth events and activities through the Community Grants Program. Jersey Australia will maintain active participation in key project where practicable stiving for a high level of R&D across the dairy industry supporting the growth and development of the Australian Jersey
In the coming 2024/25 budget the Board expects to allocate between $20-$30,000 towards Youth and Research activities, which is on par with provisions made over the last 2 financial years.

AGM TO BASE AT MOAMA
THE 2024 AGM AND CONFERENCE WILL SHOWCASE SOME OF AUSTRALIA’S BEST JERSEY HERDS AND ONE OF THE COUNTRY’S MOST PICTURESQUE RIVER SETTINGS.
The AGM from Tuesday May 28 to Friday May 31 2024 will be based out of Moama and hosted by the Northern District Club for the first time in about 10 years.
With some of the best herds in Australia on show, including several Master Breeders, visitors will be impressed by the elite quality of the cows.
They will be similarly impressed by the mighty Murray River and the twin towns of Echuca and Moama, one of Australia’s most popular regional tourist destinations.
The event will kick off on Tuesday afternoon with a visit to the Bacon family’s Brookbora farm which will also host an invitational multi-vendor sale.
While Brookbora will provide the bulk of the catalogue, the sale is also open to outside vendors.
The day will end with music and a meal and Brookbora.
The Wednesday program will be based around the Rochester and Lockington areas with visits to the Rushton family’s Benlock stud, the Cochrane family’s
Craigielea Jersey Stud, and Royals Green Jerseys run by Geoff and Yvette Brown.
That evening there will be a casual dinner on a paddle steamer in Echuca, making the most of the local attractions.
The Thursday program will start at the Walsh family’s Windy Ways farm at Tongala before continuing to Janelle McDonald and Todd Brown’s farm at Kyabram and a tour of the ACM factory at Girgarre.
Lunch will be at the Girgarre botanical gardens and will also include a guided tour.
The day’s tours will end with a visit to Jugiong Jerseys run by Pat and Brendon Nicholson at Girgarre.
That evening the awards and presentation dinner will be held at Morrison’s Winery Moama and the AGM will be held on Friday morning at the Border Inn Hotel in Moama.
Pat Nicholson from the Northern District Club said there was a lot to showcase in the region, from elite herds to typical Australian scenery.
“It should be good,” Pat said. “We’ve still got more attractions to add to the program and we’re looking forward to showcasing what the area has to offer along with the local herds.”
Due to other events in the region, we encourage those planning to attend to book accommodation early.

JERSEYS TO THE FORE AT IDW
INTERNATIONAL DAIRY WEEK IS THE BIGGEST EVENT ON THE AUSTRALIAN DAIRY CALENDAR AND JERSEYS WILL BE FRONT AND CENTRE THIS JANUARY.
While Jersey cows will capture attention through the various competitions, Jersey Australia will again have a prominent ringside location and spread the taste of Australia’s finest milk through an expanded coffee offering.
General manager Glen Barrett describes IDW as Jersey Australia’s key member engagement event outside the AGM.
“It’s an opportunity to catch up with members who are showing and visiting and we see it as a great way
to promote the breed,” Glen said. Jersey Australia’s prime trade site will be a hive of activity during IDW from January 13-18 at Tatura.
The 2024 event promises to match the successes of recent years.
This year IDW is introducing a milking yearling class to the program (ages 01-10-2021 to 1-032022), and has a new partnership initiative with Cows Create Careers to build connections between youth and IDW, hosting 34 students from 8 schools across Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia on January 17.
In teams, the students will participate in a number of activities across the day.
Young farmers will also be in the spotlight with the launch of the new Australian Dairy Youth Movement group, supported by Jersey Australia, Holstein Australia, Illawarra Cattle Society of Australia, Brown Swiss Australia, Aussie Reds, and the Guernsey Cattle Society of Australia.
IDW event coordinator Stacey Leppert is also finalising a Jersey tour.
Although details are not confirmed at this stage, the tour is expected to go from Tatura Park to two farms in the Goulburn Valley and back to Tatura.
The STG Create the Future sale will be another highlight, offering some of the country’s best genetics.
The Australian Jersey Journal – January-February 2024 // 8 FEATURE
The Power of Women event will raise funds this year for Ovarian Cancer.
“We are incredibly excited with early entries coming in fast with great numbers, with some teams entering close to 40 head of cattle,” Stacey said.
“The fantastic seasonal conditions and milk price have invigorated our wonderful exhibitors and we are excited that IDW 2024 will be the biggest and best yet!!”
US JUDGE
Jersey judge for IDW 2024 is Nathan Thomas from Ohio, USA who has judged throughout North America, South America, Mexico, Australia and the United Kingdom.
Nathan has homed more than 200 All-American and All-Canadian nominations, including 15 Champion or Reserve placings at the World Dairy Expo.
Nathan with his wife Jenny and children Colton, Kendall and Camryn own and operate Triple T Holsteins and Jerseys along with Nathan’s father and brother.
The team at Triple T have located and developed the Grand and Reserve Grand Champion Jersey at the last three World Dairy Expos. His judging accolades include being the official judge for the Holsteins, Jerseys and Red and Whites at the World Dairy Expo as well the official Jersey judge at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair.
JERSEY MILK
COFFEES
are the best coffees and people attending IDW will get to experience just how good they taste with JA’s barista-made treats.
JA is also planning a corporate coffee card this year so companies can buy cards for their staff who can then buy their coffees whenever they want. Proceeds from the sales will be donated to the new Youth Movement.
THE TYRANNY OF DISTANCE
PHILIPPA FLEMMING MIGHT NOT BE EXPECTING THE HIGHS OF 2018, BUT SHE’S CONFIDENT HER 2024 CONTINGENT AT INTERNATIONAL DAIRY WEEK WILL BE COMPETITIVE.
In 2018, Philippa and Mark’s Miami Jerseys won premier exhibitor and premier breeder, but back then they lived only an hour’s drive from Tatura and were able to exhibit a bigger troupe.
This year they will be making the five-hour trip from Cobrico in south-west Victoria, and the tyranny of distance will impact on their numbers, as it has since IDW 2020.
“We’ll probably take four, maybe three milk cows and a heifer,” Philippa said.
“It’s an expensive hobby and it’s a long stretch from here. Back in 2018 we had eight or nine milk cows and a couple of heifers. Geography was helpful. We were only an hour away and we could take 33 trailer loads of stuff”.
Although the line-up is subject to change, Philippa will be showing Homeland Sleeping Beauty 6 who
was second in the Senior Two-YearOld last year.
“She’s in form and we will roll her out again,” she said.
They have a nice heifer out of a Wallacedale Oliver Melaine cow; an ET heifer by Woodside and a Senior Two Estelle coming from the Cairnbrae family, via Gelbeado Park.
The move south may have reduced the quantity of their IDW exhibit, but not the quality and preparation for the big event has started, although a little later than usual.
“We change their feed and get them pre-clipped … you don’t just roll out of the paddock for dairy week like you might have done 20 years ago,” Philippa said.
Phillipa has been exhibiting at IDW since it started as a youth show.
“When the kids were little, we missed a couple of years but we
The Australian Jersey Journal – January-February 2024 // 9
probably haven’t missed a year since around 1995,” she added.
Apart from the major success in 2018, they have been regular IDW winners including all breeds junior champion, reserve junior champion and various year-level titles.
Regardless of success, Philippa is keen to reunite with old friends.
“We have shown with Elmar Holsteins for 10 years out of shed five – they’re great friends of ours,” she said.
“We also work with our sons Brenton and Mitchell and his wife Lyndsey. We’ve always put our efforts into helping each other and creating a team culture, which exists in many teams across the show”.
“I certainly enjoy being up there. The greatest aspect of it has always been the comradery.”
Miami Jerseys was started in 1954 by Mark’s parents John and Gwen. They farmed on several different properties. “Every move they made was for the betterment of their business – they weren’t just attached to a block of land,” Philippa said.
Mark and Philippa have done something similar. They started in the Goulburn Valley which is where Philippa grew up, bought their first farm in Finley in 1993, then took over Mark’s family farm in 2007 and were there until they shifted to Cobrico in late 2019 to leave behind the worries about water in South West Riverina.
World Dairy Expo 2024
Jersey Australia is planning to attend World Dairy Expo in 2024 and seeking expression of interest from members who are keen to attend and travel as a group.
WDE2024 dates are October 1st to 4th.
If you are interested in attending. Please contact Glen on Glen.Barrett@jersey.com.au or 0418 466 371.
Philippa also grew up in a Jersey farming family with Glenarron Jerseys.
The move to south-west Victoria followed a visit to the area in May 2019 for the Jersey Australia annual meeting. A couple of months later we had bought a farm and began reducing the herd from 600 back to 300 for the shift.
Success at IDW is always welcome, but not their main goal. “We don’t breed for show cows – we breed for good cows and for profit, but you can always find something to go to a show,” Philippa said.
“Fertility is something we are concentrating more on now, enabled by genomically testing calves as they are anesthetised for de-budding”.
WJCB 2025
Jersey Australia is pleased to announce that we have been awarded the hosting rights to the 2025 World Jersey Conference.
The 2025 conference will be planned to finish in Sydney for the Sydney Royal Easter Show Jersey judging.

HERE FOR THE LONG HAUL
HENRY BEVAN IS WITNESSING AN UPTURN OF INTEREST IN QUEENSLAND DAIRY AND HE WANTS TO BE A BIG PART OF IT.
“We’re in it for the long haul; we don’t see ourselves doing anything else,” Henry says.
And front and centre of his bright future is his growing Jersey herd.
Henry is the fifth generation to farm his family land at Ravenshoe on the Atherton Tablelands, about 120km south of Cairns.
Along with his wife Anna, Henry milks about 240 on their 230-hectare farm.
Traditionally the farm was based on Jerseys going back to its origins in 1910, but Henry’s father moved instead to a predominantly Holstein base.
Over the past few years, Henry has reversed that decision and he’s happy with the results.
“Originally it was a Jersey herd but my dad transitioned to Holsteins and now we’ve gone full circle,” he said. “We’re still about 60 per cent Holstein, 40 per cent Jersey but we’re increasing the Jersey numbers and aim to reverse that to 40-60.
“We found Jerseys an easier animal to manage, they’re smaller in stature, they get less health problems, they have high fertility and higher components over the Holsteins.”
They bought a few different lines of heifers and milking cows over the past few years when some local herds went out of dairying.
Henry is particularly keen on developing the Donaria family after buying some from Rodney and
Cynthia Hartin of Long Lanes Holsteins and Jerseys.
“We bought a line of milking cows from the Hartin family, including about 10 Donarias,” Henry said. “They are really consistent and breed really well so we want to focus on them.”
The herd is registered, which Henry says definitely value adds to his business, and he has been genomically testing in recent years which is contributing to even better outcomes.
“We’ll continue to grow the business and milking numbers and look forward to developing the Jersey cow a bit further,” Henry added.
When breeding, Henry targets a balanced animal. “We want nothing too extreme, which is another reason why we turned more towards Jerseys. We find it’s easier to make those breeding decisions and there is a good variety of bulls available that can target our breeding goals of a balance between type and production and all the health traits that go with it,” he said.
The herd average is about 7000 litres per year. The Jerseys produce about 6000 litres, but more than making up for the lower volume with the higher fat and protein components. “With the components, we actually get more milk solids out of the Jerseys than the Holsteins,” Henry said.
They supply Bega’s Malanda factory and are paid on volume so will keep a portion of Holsteins in the herd.
The farm is on the western end of the Atherton Tablelands so is typically drier than most of the Tableland region.
“We probably get about 1.5 metres of rain per year. It’s a pretty good climate for most of the year but this time of year (December) is very humid and we’re bracing for a cyclone this week.”
It remains a good area for dairying and despite some farms being lost in recent years, 38 remain active across the Atherton Tablelands.
Henry hopes the loss of dairy farms is in the past.
“The outlook is starting to shift,” he said. “We’ve had a few farms start up in recent times or are in the process of starting up at the moment, which had been unheard of for 10 to 15 years.
“We’ve still got a long way to go to make sure it’s secure going forward, but there’s definitely more positivity around at the moment.”
The higher milk price and the consistency of a monthly milk cheque help the positive outlook, and Henry says Queenslanders deserve their own locally-produced milk.
“Everyone wants Queensland to have its own milk; I think even Victorians would be happy not to have to truck their milk out of Victoria. Having that local image is something we lost over the last few years but we’re working very hard to try to get it back.”
With three children aged five, three and four months, Henry is all about working for the future and the potential sixth generation.
“I love working with the cows and improving genetics and producing a high-quality product at the end of the day,” he said.

SPRING CLASSIFICATION ROUND UP
THE SPRING CLASSIFCATION TOUR HAS BEEN EXCEPTIONALLY BUSY WITH THE CLASS TEAM PUTTING IN SOME BIG DAYS ACROSS THE COUNTRY AND WITH JUST 3 SMALL REGIONS TO FINISH OFF, WE WILL HAVE ALL REQUIREMENTS WRAPPED UP BEFORE IDW ALL GOING TO PLAN.
Across Australia, we had over 6000 cows scheduled for classification. We have visited 111 member farms and scored cows for 140 separate members as well as 13 visits for LTEs on behalf of AI companies and 24 farms for Ginfo providing scores for 3743 cows from the 6000+ booked and inspected.
With more data still being processed and herds to visits we anticipate scoring over 4000 cows for the spring tour which is big effort by our classifier team who we thank greatly for their commitment to being a classifier and we also can not miss the tireless work by the office team in helping make it all happen in the backroom.
The class team have assessed some amazing cows with the following cows classifying at the very high end.

Describe by breeder Roger Heath as a once in a life time cow and a part of the family and the classifier team as one of the most well balance cow in the breed, Wanstead Valentino Fernleaf has created a new level excitement in the Jersey breed classifying EX 96 in early in the spring tour.
• The first Australian Jersey to classify EX96 for nearly 50 years.
• 10-month-old Vanahlem daughter recently sold at the Cultivate Sale for an Australian record yearling price of $23,000.
• Jersey Australia – 2020 All Australian Photo Comp 4-YearOld Winner.
• Champion Cow – 2021 Great Southern Photo Competition.
• 4yr Old champion at Noorat Show.
Congratulations to all partners ont his great achievement.
