the last 2 months we have the seen the very best of people shine brightly in the most differences of circumstance The Bushfires across Australia have been most severe with fatalities and catastrophic damage to property, livestock and communities. The Dairy industry in North Eastern Vic and South Eastern NSW was severely impacted and for the Jersey Family we were all deeply saddened at the death of Robert Salway and son Patrick in fires. The Salway Family and WILGO Jerseys resonate loudly in the Bega Valley and across Australia through the Jersey community as a passionate successful breeder and exhibitor of high-quality Jerseys. Our deepest condolences to Janelle and Renee and Tim, Emma, Aaron, Kellie-Anne, Kristen and Families for your loss. From the despair of the bushfires, shone brightly the true Australian spirit. The Australian community stood proud through the adversity whether as a member of a local fire service in battling the fires either in your local region or far away to provide support where it was needed the most, through donations of fodder, offers of agistment or cow parking or supporting the Dairy Industry Bushfire Appeal as a donor or purchases the Jersey Family stood tall. I was talking with a member in the fire affected areas at the height of the blazes and his comment that he was overwhelmed with the offers of fodder or capacity to park cows from fellow members across the country. It certainly makes you proud to be a leader of JA with the quality of members that we have IDW was a great success. The competition was of a high standard and was terrific to see and speak to so many of the members throughout the week. The joy of the competition was evident and none more so than for the likes of Frank Walsh and Brad and Jess Gavenlock, Trevor and Julie Campbell and Andy Cullen for winning the respective Senior, Intermediate and Junior classes and to Frank, Jess and Brad with the Supreme Champion Jersey. IDW Champion ribbons are the hardest to achieve and is a success breeders and exhibitors much deserve.

A wrap-up of the winners from the Semex-Jersey Australia Great Southern Challenge.
T
he 2019 Semex-Jersey Australia Great Southern Challenge was judged by Pat Nicholson of Jugiong Jerseys, Gigarre, Vic. The Great Southern Challenge includes 11 clubs from the NSW Riverina district, all parts of Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia. Winning 4 year old and Highest Pointed Cow went to the entry of Chris & Pam Mackenzie, Jireh Jerseys, Cooriemungle, with Jireh Ares Sunbeam VG-88. Sunbeam is a daughter of BW Ares (of which Chris is milking 8 or more daughters) and she has two crosses in her pedigree back to BW Centurion Iris. The Sunbeam family has been in the Jireh herd for about 30 years and is known for being consistent and relatively invisible. One afternoon whilst following the cows up the track Chris thought that Sunbeam was “looking pretty good” and thought “he should give her a go in the local challenge”. I guess his hunch to enter her paid off!
Great Northern Challenge Champion four-year-old and highest pointed cow – Jayden Valentino Junette EX93, Jamie & Michelle Drury.
The 2 yr old winner and 3 yr old winners hail from the same great Australian cow family – the Empress’s. Winning the 2 yr olds was Warrain Valentino Empress 11, owned by John and Margaret Cockerell, Warrain Jerseys, Numurkah, Vic. 3 yr old accolades went to Loxleigh Valentino Empress 5940, owned by Geoff and Natalie Akers, Tallygaroopna, Vic. Both of these females are classified full points for their respective ages and share the same 5th dam – Babrooten Dreaming Empress 6th, a purchase that John Cockerell made approximately 35 years ago when she was a maiden heifer. Empress 6th would go on to have 14 daughters for the Cockerell’s, 12 of which classified 90 points or higher. Margaret Cockerell says that the Empress’s are the largest and most prominent cow family in their herd, mostly due to the fact that they breed very true to type and predominantly have female calves. Akers then purchased into the Empress family when Cockerell’s consigned a maiden heifer to one of the Northern Lights Sales, paying $6000 for a Vanahlem. What seemed like a potentially hefty price at the time, has certainly showed its value already with that heifer now
scoring EX-93 and being the direct dam of the winning 3 yr old. Langdale Valentino Madge EX-93 was the winner of the 5 yr old class for Darien and Alex Mathews of Langdale Jerseys at Dumbalk, in South Gippsland. Madge traces back through Kings Vale breeding (her grandmother having been purchased at the 2007 Kings Vale sale), and then back to Denison Park. Darien comments that Madge was never a flashy heifer, or even 2 yr old, but when she came in on her 2nd calf he thought he “really had something”. Madge is a herd favourite, not only for her type qualities but also for her production, and will enter into a flush program this autumn, after calving twin bulls last spring. Mature cow winner was Meldan Vanahlem Violet EX-93. Sold as a calf in the 2013 Meldan dispersal, she was purchased by Anthony Glennen in the Western Districts. When Violet was a 2yr old, the Glennen family then dispersed their herd and Ben Pedretti purchased her, with Glennen’s retaining a share. Violet also enjoyed a successful show career, including 2nd place 5 yr old at IDW. Following her win in the

Great Southern Challenge, Violet was consigned to the Global Impact Jersey Supremacy sale at IDW, where she sold for $5500 to Ian Anderson, Kings View Jerseys, Nar Nar Goon. The above class winners will now take on their peers from the Great Northern Challenge and face off in the Great Australian Challenge, with the results being announced at the Jersey Australia AGM dinner in Queensland in May.

The Glencraig Pam’s are not to be confused with the Lara Pam’s, which Salway’s have also had some notable successes with. Steve also notes that he loves the on farm challenge because it allows “low profile” cows to compete (and in some cases trump!) other cows that get the opportunity to go to shows.

Heading up the coast a couple of hours, the winning 3 yr old was Boscawen Tbone Layl 6992 88@2yrs, for the Herne & Russell families of Boscawen Holsteins and Jerseys. A large dairy operation, Layl is part of an 800 cow herd at Brundee via Nowra. A product of the Genetic Recovery program, Layl is the first generation to be fully registered in her maternal line.
And the Bega Valley, is the home of the winning 2yr old, Glencraig Marcin Pam, owned by Steve and Donna Salway, Glencraig Jerseys, Toothdale. Steve says the Pam’s have been at Glencraig “forever”, and although they haven’t grown into a big family, they

The Northern Challenge spans the club winners from the Far North Club in Queensland, down to the Bega Valley on the Far South Coast of NSW.

5 yr old winner was Lerida Park Ivanhoe Texas 42. This EX-90 cow is owned by Graeme and Lisa Cochrane, Oakwalla Jerseys, Barrengarry, NSW, and part of a herd comprising of both Holsteins and Jerseys. Texas was purchased from Lerida Park Jerseys, RP & LJ Smethurst, Princetown, Vic. Rounding out the class winners for 2019, is the Mature cow, Fairbrae Tbone Ruby, owned by Jim and Bev Hewett, Bentley via Lismore. As a 2yr old, Ruby had a big, black lump on her flank. The local vet removed it and confirmed it was a melanoma cancer. Now, classified EX-92, she has quite the resume, being the reining Supreme Champion of the Lismore Spectacular. Prior to her 2019 win, she was Reserve Champion in 2018. She is now back in calf, and hoping to defend her title again in 2020, after which Jim hopes to put her through a flush program. She already has daughters sired by Mantra and Barcelona. The above class winners will now take on their peers from the Great Sorthern Challenge and face off in the Great Australian Challenge, with the results being announced at the Jersey Australia AGM dinner in Queensland in May.

YOUTH CHALLENGE
he Australian-New Zealand sporting rivalry runs deep on the cricket field or the rugby field – but how competitive are we when showing Jerseys? The New Zealand youth team has shown it can match the best Australia has to offer, but it’s always a friendly rivalry with a lot of international support. For the past three years, Jersey NZ has brought a team to enter the youth challenge at International Dairy Week. Last year they took out the title, this year the team was second, impressive results with borrowed cows and gear. Julie Eirie, who has coordinated the tour for the past three years and is a member of the Jersey NZ Board, and president of Jersey NZ, Alison Gibb, explained how the visit came about. “We were talking to Jersey Australia member Anthea Day who attended Jersey Week in New Zealand and she suggested we should come over to International Dairy Week in Australia, so we did and it worked very well,” Julie said. Challenges in New Zealand have four members on the team and IDW is bigger than any shows in New Zealand, but the kids love it.
“It gives us an opportunity to see a cow show in Australia and compete in the challenge,” Julie said. “There’s more competition in the showing world compared to New Zealand and you get better numbers in shows in Australia.” But as Jerseys become more popular in New Zealand as consumers demand natural fats and farmers seek to take advantage of the Jersey’s success and efficiency in pasturebased farming, young people are coming to the fore. The 10-member New Zealand team range from 13 to 20 years, and were accompanied by four adults. The tour has multiple benefits. “It provides a leadership opportunity for the children to selfmange and work as a team,” Alison said. “There is quite a diverse range of personalities and it helps with their growing up and meeting challenges. It’s very good from that point of view.” Hannah Nicholson has joined all three tours. “It’s a good atmosphere of like-minded people,” she said. “We’ve got a good group that’s all here for the same reasons; we love competing. “I love watching and learning and then practising at home what I’ve learnt.”

Brad Seager is on his first trip, expanding on his showing interest through a calf club at home. “I know people who’ve been over before and said it was a really good experience,” he said. “It’s been really cool to meet new people and have new experiences.” They aren’t allowed to bring cows across the Ditch but in previous years exhibitors have asked the children to help out with their stock. This year they helped with leading during the Jersey sale. and for the youth judging competition. “After the first year the kids were keen so we came back,” Julie said. “Last year we won the youth challenge so we definitely had to come back. To get second from 14 teams isn’t bad considering we had to borrow cows and gear.” The 2020 group is also keen to return, as long as it doesn’t clash with other events. There has been strong support on both sides of the Tasman. “We couldn’t have done this without the support of parents, Jersey New Zealand and Lewis Road Creamery, Jersey New Zealand’s main sponsor and they’ve helped with the tour,” Julie said. They also paid tribute to the Australian support. Tthe help of the farmers here who have lent us animals and lent us gear. The Australian people have been wonderful hosts and we really appreciate the support, especially the farmers here who have lent us animals and gear New Zealand’s equivalent Dairy Event event has been cancelled for the past two years because of the Mycoplasma bovis outbreak. “The government is trying to eliminate the M-bovis and it means people aren’t prepared to exhibit their animals among other animals,” Julie said. “But it looks like it’s getting under control so we’re looking forward to resuming shows.” There could be opportunities for Australian teenagers to go to New Zealand. “Jersey NZ would welcome an Australian team coming to New Zealand”, Alison said. “We have started talking about it and would be prepared to host an Australian team.”

SOLO SUCCESS FOR CATTLE FITTER
A
ndrew Cullen has had success at International Dairy Week in partnerships and as a cattle fitter but winning Junior Champion this year marks his first title as a solo exhibitor. Andrew purchased PHILMAR FC UPTO MISCHIEF through an auction in Warrnambool in November from sellers Mitchell Fleming and Brett Kuhn. He knew straight away that she had potential. “I admired the outline and make-up of the heifer and her pedigree,” he said. PHILMAR FC UPTO MISCHIEF was born in October 2018 and was fully bred through Riverside Jerseys at Nirranda in south-west Victoria. As a cattle fitter he has experience across Australia and has been part of the Dairy Week scene since 2007. “I travel across Australia getting cows ready for shows and sales and have been involved with previous championship winners,” Andrew said.
“I’ve been involved with other people for many years, but this was the first time I’ve won under my own name.” PHILMAR FC UPTO MISCHIEF was housed with Gorbro Holsteins leading into Dairy Week. “They are good friends of mine and I was very fortunate they were able to help me out be looking after her leading into the show,” Andrew said. Although he had high hopes, Andrew was pleasantly surprised she was awarded Junior Champion. “I was over the moon, very pleased with the result,” he said. “I certainly wasn’t expecting it. In Australia, Dairy Week is the ultimate prize.” Having tasted championships in partnerships and now on his own, Andrew is happy with either route to success. “It’s certainly pleasing do it on my own but it’s also good to do it with other people,” he said. Andrew works across breeds and is happy to keep finding and working with good cows. “I respect any good tidy animal; it doesn’t matter what breed they’re from,” he said.

`THE WOW FACTOR’

ore than 50 years of breeding has gone into giving Trevor and Julie Campbell’s JIMANN TEQUILA MAREE the `wow factor’. Trevor and Julie say winning the IDW intermediate championship was the highlight of their long breeding and showing careers. It’s even more impressive considering they dispersed most of their herd last year. “It was a great thrill,” Trevor said. “A cow we bred won the Great Southern in 2001. That was our greatest achievement until now, but to say we had a champion at Dairy Week probably tops that. “It’s the culmination of 50 years of breeding.” It was only the sixth time their Jimann Jersey Stud from Rochester in northern Victoria has competed at IDW and this was their first championship winner. “We haven’t shown continuously; we wait for one that we consider worthy,” Trevor said.

The stud started in 1963 when Trevor became a Jersey Society member as a 13-year-old boy, and he can trace JIMANN TEQUILA MAREE back to his first attempt at breeding. “When I started breeding, after I left school and started working for my grandfather, I purchased a line of 11 heifers for $60 each. This cow descends from one of those heifers and is the daughter of TEQUILA.” The stud developed what they call the M Family from one of those original heifers. “The original cow was Mandy and we developed it from there,” Trevor said. “There have been Miriam, Margot and others but we call them the M family.” A key to breeding success has been using the best available bulls through the generations. “I always look at the pedigree of the dam of the bull before I use him. Back in the days when I started, we didn’t have genomics and ASIs, it went basically on production and type with the bulls from a proven sire.” Jimann Tequila Maree is the latest in a long run of successful cows. “She has five 90-point or better cows directly behind her,” Trevor said. “We had her classified just before Dairy Week and she’s just gone 90 points herself as a three-year-old.” Trevor and Julie dispersed their herd in May – a reflection of their age and the tough climate for dairy farming in northern Victoria. “The water has been taken from our area,” he said. “We had no alternative but to sell our water because the Campaspe system was closed. We have a deep bore, but it’s become more difficult to milk cows without access to the water you need. Reluctantly, we had an offer for the cows, and we decided it was probably time to sell.” But one cow survived the cut. “This cow was one I couldn’t part with,” Trevor said. “We didn’t want to see her lost to the system. She was only a two-year-old at the time, so we thought while we’ve still got the farm, we’ll hang on to her.” Jimann Tequila Maree was intermediate champion at the Rochester Show last year, won the Northern District On-Farm
Challenge and was third in the Great Southern Challenge. “We didn’t want to die wondering whether she might have done well at Dairy Week, so we decided to give her a turn,” Trevor said. Brad and Jess Gavenlock were contracted to prepare her for the event and Trevor said, “she came up a treat on the day.” “She always had something special; that x-factor you see in a cow from time to time.” She is now being milked by a friend. “We haven’t really decided what we’re going to do with her,” Trevor said. “We’ve still got last year’s heifers that we’ve joined to calve this coming spring. We’ll probably disperse them at some stage, but I don’t know if we’ll disperse her with them.” Trevor and Julie are still deciding what to do with the farm. “We didn’t want to make a hasty decision when the cows went. We wanted to take 12 months to think about what we want to do.
“We’ve been involved in the industry all our lives. It’s been good to us but there have been some tough times too. It’s sad to see it when it’s tough but I would do it all over again. The lifestyle is in your blood.” Trevor said the IDW win was unexpected. “I’m a classifier with Jersey Australia and get around the country a bit and know there are a lot of good cows out there; the breed is in good hands. “To win an event like Dairy Week a lot of things have to fall into place. There was some hot competition.” The judge’s description when she was in the championship line-up was `wow’ before describing her excellent traits and defining what he likes about her. “What his wow factor was I don’t know,” Trevor said. “To us, she’s pretty well put together. She’s a big cow for her age, lots of capacity and a really good udder.”

BETTER THAN A FOOTBALL PREMIERSHIP

ast year Tongala breeder Frank Walsh compared his first International Dairy Week championship to winning a football premiership. This year he has gone one step further and says winning Senior Champion and Grand Champion titles is better than any football or cricket premiership. WINDY WAYS GALAXIES DAWN 7 has scored the rare double, becoming possibly the first Jersey to record back-to-back wins in intermediate and senior categories. And Frank thinks the best is yet to come for the award-winning fouryear-old. “I don’t think it has happened before where a Jersey cow has won intermediate one year and next year won Senior Champion,” he said. It’s unusual for a young cow to take the top title. “Usually more mature cows win; it’s rare for a four-year-old,” Frank said.

“For a young cow, she’s extraordinary. In fact, I think we were very close to being all-breeds champion as well.” The previous year she won her two-year-old class and hasn’t been beaten at any show. Frank, 75, plans to return next year to try for a hat-trick of wins. “We’re hoping everything goes well and we’ll front up with her again next year. “She’s a four-year-old and we hope she’s only going to get better.” Frank was confident she could defy the odds and win the senior titles. “I think she was a stand-out and going by what people said that was the common view,” he said. “There was nothing but compliments.” One comment was that WINDY WAYS GALAXIES DAWN 7 was a cow ready for the show ring. “With most cows you have to do something to get them up and there’s usually something not quite right but
with this cow there’s nothing to do; she nearly prepares herself. “Brian Leslie judged her last year and he said he couldn’t find a fault in her. He said she was marvellous, and he didn’t think he’d seen a better young cow.” To make sure she was in top shape, Frank enlisted co-owners Brad and Jess Gavenlock to prepare her for IDW. “She’s just a pleasant cow to work with,” Frank said. “She’s the boss, but that’s just her nature.” Frank has no doubt “she’s the best I’ve ever had”. WINDY WAYS GALAXIES DAWN 7 heritage can be traced back to 1908 in the Dawn family. “I had another Dawn cow that was nearly as good, but she died from peritonitis so never got the chance to go that far,” he added. Frank said he was confident from last year that she could take the top title. “In saying that, I had to control my confidence, but I knew she was a good cow,” he said. “She’s got a lot going for her and she won everything at Sydney Royal last year.” Taking the senior title was a big step-up. “It’s like playing thirds football and then going up in the seniors. I coached a premiership side and played in a couple, but I think this might go past it. I think this cow might be at the top of the shelf.” Windy Ways Jerseys started in the late 1950s at Cobden but moved to Tongala in 1980. Co-owner Brad Gavenlock describes WINDY WAYS GALAXIES DAWN 7 as a “oncein-a-lifetime cow” and her track record backs up such a claim. “She’s the best Jersey cow I’ve ever owned and one of the easiest cows to get ready that I’ve ever had,” Brad said. Brad and Jess from Cherrylock Cattle Co at Tallygaroopna have prepared WINDY WAYS GALAXIES DAWN 7 for her many successes, including three times at IDW and scooping all awards at Sydney Royal Show. “She’s never been beaten in any show,” Brad said. “That doesn’t happen by luck and chance. COWS BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER
on Glennen and Sandra and Rob Bacon (pictured above) have two of the best Jersey herds in Australia, but they’re still looking for ways to make them better. Con, from Noorat in south-west Victoria, and Robert and Sandra, from Tennyson in northern Victoria, are regulars at International Dairy Week. They say it’s a great meeting point for fellow cow and Jersey enthusiasts and, of course, a great place to see the best cows, no matter what the breed. It was a four-hour drive each way for Con and an hour for Robert and Sandra. “I’ve been coming ever since it started, probably 14 years,” Robert said. Their interest was sparked by an opportunity for their children to show their cows and the stud has had great successes over the years, including winning intermediate champion and reserve all breed champion. Con, who farms with his wife Michelle and sons James and William, doesn’t show but he shares similar sensibilities to Rob and Sandra. “Rob’s success is out of a commercial herd,” Con said. “We think similarly. We’re in a commercial business; it’s not a show herd.” “Showing is just another aspect of farming,” Robert added. “Coming to Dairy Week helps with our marketing and it’s great to catch up with all the A.I companies.
“There’s great camaraderie.” IDW brings breeders together to enjoy their common interest. “I can pick up the phone and call Rob and Sandra and know I probably met them here,” Con said. “It’s connections; you meet people from all over the world,” Robert added. During IDW, Con planned to meet up with a couple of African farmers he had visited in their home country two years ago. Con doesn’t show but rarely misses the event. “If you see me with a cow on a piece of string you know I’ve gone troppo,” he laughs. “Showing’s not for me but that’s ok; it’s worth it for the networking. We just met here today and started chatting.” “Cows bring people together.,” Sandra added. The Bacons have the number three BPI and number one TWI herd, Con
has the number one BPI herd. “We’re nothing special; we just milk good cows,” Sandra said. “You have to work out what works and what doesn’t work.” “We do what we do, and we do it well,” Con added. The farmers know a good cow, and are impressed by what’s on show at IDW. “A good cow is one that lasts a long time and you want to keep milking it,” Robert said. “If I have to face her on a Sunday morning or Christmas night, she’s got to be something I want to milk,” Con said. “It’s a seven-days-a-week commitment, you’ve got to enjoy what you do.” The Bacons proved their Brookbora Jerseys is one of Australia’s best studs, being awarded Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor at IDW 2020.

I
t had been a long time between drinks for Daryl and Sue Bryce when it came to visiting International Dairy Week. The couple from Cudgee in southwest Victoria had been retired from farming for 12 years but were lured back six years ago by their love of the land and Jersey cows. In their previous farming lives, the Bryces were regulars at IDW and enthusiastic competitors. They haven’t returned to showing but they have rekindled their love of IDW over the past three years. “We were here before we retired and have been coming back for the past three years,” Daryl, the Western District Jersey Club president said. “It’s always good to have a look at high quality cows and meet up with a lot of our old friends.” Daryl says things improved significantly during their long hiatus. “The cows are tremendous now,” he said. “The problem is they’ve got to get fitters to get them looking like

this and that’s a big cost. We used to show but haven’t since coming out of retirement; we’d have to get a special one before we started showing again.” “But it’s still good to come and watch. We enjoy looking at good cows.” The Jersey sale also had special significance for the Bryce family.
SUPPORTING A GOOD CAUSE Suppliers and supporters have rallied to back the Jersey Australia / Global Impact Supremacy fundraiser for the Salway family and other farmers devasted by the country’s bushfires. DeLaval donated a calf care package that helped raise .. for the appeal. Sales manager Roger Hazell said the donation was one of a number of things done by DeLaval to support bushfire relief on farm. “We were invited to participate in the silent auction and put together a calf care package including feeders, supplements and a stationary brush with a retail value of $1000-$1200,” he said. “People realise it’s going to a good cause hopefully people are generous in their bidding because the money is going to a good cause.

“The quality of the sale was very high and set a new record for a yearling, which knocked off the $22,000 price paid by our son Greg, who farms at Nullawarre. “I knew it would be pretty good price. It’s a champion cow and you’d expect a good price.” Daryl and Sue spend the day looking at cows and the evening meeting friends. “In the evening we meet up with 10 or a dozen Jersey people at the pubs in town and socialise,” Daryl said. At 70 and 68, Daryl and Sue are still going strong in their second incarnation as farmers. They had previously sold their herd and their Naringal farm before tiring of life on the edge of the city and buying a small farm at Cudgee. They have since added a new property and share the farming duties with son Tim with about 380 in the herd. Having Jerseys was an essential part of the comeback. “I mostly missed breeding the cows,” Daryl said. “Introducing North American bloodlines improved it a lot,” Daryl said. “I like the dairyness of the Jerseys and their ability to milk. They’re producing better and living longer as well.”

MAKING THE MOST OF HOLIDAYS
elinda Egan only gets one holiday a year from her Longwarry north farm in Gippsland and her destination is always the same … International Dairy Week.
The attraction of the country’s best cows and meeting old friends is hard to resist. Belinda’s Ripponlea stud has had success over the years, as has her partner Simon Reid’s Jackiah stud, but showing is only part of the appeal. “I’ve been coming here for more than 15 years for the showing, promoting the breed, and the friendships are a big part of it,” she said. “Some people you only see once a year and it’s good to catch up with them. “We’re a big family.” Initially Belinda went to IDW to help other people but in the last eight or nine years she’s shown cows. “It’s all part and parcel of it. There’s the competitive side of it but also the comradeship, catching up with friends and renewing bonds.” Belinda and Simon have been farming in Gippsland for two and a half years after moving from south-west Victoria to buy a property. Showing has been part of her life since she was six and continues to be a passion, although she often hands over leading duties. “You put so much work into them, I like to sit back and watch them and let someone else lead. This is my time off farm, my only holiday for the year so I enjoy it.” Belinda had four cows at this year’s IDW and has three local shows and the

ecords fell across the board in a sensational Global Impact Supremacy Sale at International Dairy Week. A new Australian record of $24,000 was set for a yearling, $2000 more than the previous top price. The sale average of nearly $5880 was also an IDW sale record, beating the previous record of $5386 set in 2015. LIGHTNING RIDGE MB VIP FABIENNE sold for $24,000 to Mitchell Flemming and Lucas Randle of Newry. It went on to win the rising star class the next day at IDW. After the sale, Dianne and Declan Patten from Global Impact Supremacy…not Frank Borba from the US surprised by the top prices. purchased a one-third share in the heifer. Dianne bred its mother. Declan Patten from Global Impact Supremacy said he wasn’t surprised by the top prices. “The top lot’s mother has unfortunately passed away so they’re not making any more,” he said. “She had been grand champion and intermediate champion at world dairy expo and was one of the most prolific show cows in the world. This heifer had sold 5-6 sisters for between $19,000 and $25,000US. “It was definitely in the ballpark and the new owners have invested in a really great one. She has an outstanding pedigree and the heifer herself is outstanding. She’s cut like her mother and ticks all the boxes. LIGHTNING RIDGE MB VIP FABIENNE’s sire was RIVER VALLEY VENUS V I P-ET and dam MB LUCKY LADY FELIZ NAVIDAD-ET EX-93. The average sale price was also a comfortable record breaker. “That’s a good result for everyone involved,” Declan said. “We put together what I believe was one of the strongest catalogues ever seen in this country. We had a lot of people who supported it and put their best cows forward. “We had a great catalogue and the animals matched the pedigree and you can’t always say that with all the breeds.” The sale also raised $5000 for bushfire appeal to support the Salway family. Rob and Kerrie Anderson also matched the sale average with a donation to the bushfire appeal. Declan said some things may be misunderstood about his motivation for the sale. “I launched and run this sale to promote the Jersey breed; that was my core focus,” he said. “We wanted to push the Jersey breed forward and we’ve been very successful in doing that. That’s our motivation. It’s not just for me; it’s for the breed and we work hard to do that.” Declan says Jerseys are increasing in popularity globally. “It’s one of the fastest growing breeds in the world and that’s because they’re a medium-sized cow that can produce high components and we get paid for components in this country. They’re very well-balanced animals. “It’s a popular breed and we want to be the ones pushing it forward.” The Australian Jersey Journal – March-April 2020 // 23
More than $115,000 raised to help devastated farmers

ore than $115,000 has been raised for farmers impacted by Australia’s bushfires in a special appeal launched by Jersey Australia and Global Impact Supremacy with the support of International Dairy Week (IDW) Funds raised during the drive at IDW are being donated to the Salway family and to the Dairy farmers affected by the bushfires. Robert Salway, 63, a long-term Jersey Australia member, was killed alongside his son Patrick, 29, as they were trying to protect their farm at Cobargo NSW. Jersey Australia general manager Glen Barrett said the top item was $50,000 paid to take the pick of the herd of 10,000 at Moxey Farms. World Wide Sires Australia donated $15,000. Rob and Kerrie Anderson of Kings Ville Jersey matched the $5880 Global Impact Supremacy Jersey sale average at IDW as a donation to the bushfire appeal. During the Global Impact Supremacy Sale at IDW, a Casino pregnancy due in July out of Lightning Ridge Tequila Fernleaf VG87 was auctioned for $5000. The consignment was donated by Frank and Diane Borba, Callum Moscript and Declan Patten. Jersey Australia provided coffees and donuts for a gold coin donation to add to the appeal. Mr Barrett said the amount massively exceeded predictions. “It was extraordinary and only achievable thanks to the fantastic support of those who donated animals, goods, genetics and cash and supporters who bid so generously,” he said. “It shows just how caring and resilient the Australian dairy community is.” A silent auction of 63 donated items and supported by Elite Livestock Services raised an additional $35,000. Change from Syndicate Memberships
Members involved with syndicate memberships would have recently received communications on the changes to no longer provide syndicate memberships and transfer existing syndicate to either Full or Associate Memberships. If you have not received this, please contact the JA office ASAP With no longer offering Syndicate memberships, JA has needed to update its rule accordingly. The following rules have been put in place to govern animals with multiple owners. Animals owned in Partnership • Jersey Australia only recognises the ownership right of all beneficial owners of any animal owned in partnership where the Beneficial owners are all listed and named on the membership that the animals is listed on the stock register of. • Any financial member who is a listed part owner of an animal on another membership may register progeny of the animal using their own Stud Prefix and Tattoo with the written permission of all listed owners on the membership. • Any animal owned by a membership with multiple beneficial owners submitted for transfer must have the transfer singed by at least 50% + 1 of the beneficial owners. • Jersey Australia does not in any way recognise the beneficial ownership rights of any person, company or entity in the ownership rights of an animal where the animal is maintained on a membership that does not recognise all beneficial owners. STP changes
Last year JA raised the classification requirement for the STP Award and after receiving strong feedback from members that production requirements need to be raised, the board has reviewed this and in 2020, will implement the following change. The production requirement will change from KG’s of Protein to KG’s of Milk Solids The minimum requirement of Milk Solids will be based on the average Kg of Milk solids per cow of the top 10 herds on the production awards of the previous year multiplied by 6. i.e. if the average per cow Kg/s of Milk solids of the top 10 herds is 650kg for the 2019 Production awards year, a cow must achieve a minimum lifetime production in 2020 of 3,900kg of Milk Solids to qualify for a STP Award alongside the minimum 91 class score.

Happy 80th Birthday Barrie!! Not many farmers can and would want to still be running at Dairy Farm at 80 years old! For Barrie Allan this is still all he wants to do. With the help of his daughter Tanya, his wife Sue and his Grand children Levi and Ava they continue to run ‘Inverlair Heights’ Jersey Stud. Barrie’s son Brett and family live in QLD. Barrie’s Grandfather settled at Mardan in the late 1870’s and began clearing the land. Originally from Scotland, he came to South Gippsland via Ballarat and was one of the first to select land in Mardan. Barries family had supplied Murray Goulburn or the Leongatha Butter Factory (as it was once known) for 92 years and were devastated when the last Australian Co-op failed. Barrie notched up 50 years of milking and supplying the factory in 2004, an achievement his family was very proud of. They now supply Saputo.
In 1981 “Inverlair Heights Jersey Stud’ was started. Barrie went to buy a bull from Wally Dowel “Inverell” and ended up buying 12 heifers instead. He bought a bull from Les Bunn “Mapleton Choice Texan” (NZ and Frankcliff bloodlines) and out crossed him over his heifers. From then he was buying 6 or 7 heifers from Les Bunn’s annual sale every year and also bought from the paddock and sales from Cochrans -‘Parrabell.’ The stud was off and running. Over the years he has bought from Ivan O’Callaghan – ‘Barwidgee,’ Gordon Peck – ‘Lynbrae,’ Tim and Sue Thorn – ‘Fleurieu,’ Jock and Gordon Lawson – ‘Kooroo,’ Kuhne’s - ‘Bushlea,’ Luke and Mel Wallace - ‘Wallacedale’ Recently purchasing bulls from ‘Brookbora’ - Bacons and ‘Auburn Vale’ Kelvin Trotman.

IRISH JUDGING EXPERIENCE
ob Anderson has judged most major show in Australia and three times in New Zealand but he’s still broadening his judging experience.
In December Rob became only the second Australian to officiate at the Royal Ulster Winter Fair. The fair in Northern Ireland was a single day event and attracted about 6500 people. It featured classes for Holstein, Ayrshire, Shorthorn and Jersey breeds and more than 200 trade stall exhibitors. The Drouin West Jersey farmer has been judging for 30 years and being chosen to go to Ireland ranks highly, though not quite top of the tree. “It’s a great experience. If the opportunity came again to judge oversea, I’d definitely be interested,” he said. “However, International Dairy Week is still the highlight. This is a bigger show and to judge your own breed is definitely the highlight. IDW is recognised around the world.” Rob became the first Australian to judge the National Jersey show at IDW in 2016. He follows Brian Leslie as the only Australian to judge at The Royal Ulster Winter Fair and is understood to be the only person to judge three times at the New Zealand Dairy Event. Like most people, Rob started judging in country shows judging competitions and progressed to state and national finals. “From a young age it was bred into me. Our family has been involved with Jerseys for more than 100 years and my father and grandfather both judged,” he said. “It’s always been an interest. We’ve always been at shows and naturally you notice how cows look.” What Rob looks for when judging hasn’t changed over the years but the way the cows are presented has become more professional and the overall quality has improved. “It was probably a bit easier to judge a few years ago because there was more variance between the way the cows were prepared and what cows were brought to a show. Now, when you come to an elite show, people only bring their best. The gap between

first and second could be very close; the difference maybe just the finest of detail and for most people it might not look like much, but an experienced judge can easily look and say one trait is slightly better than the other.” Rob isn’t sure how he was nominated for Ireland, but he was happy to take up the challenge. “To get nominated for any big-time show is a huge honour; to actually get the job is a privilege,” he said. “If you do a good job, you get invited back or recommended to judge elsewhere.” He added that it was a compliment to the Australian judging panel. “it’s nice to be recognised around the world that we have experienced judges here in Australia,” he said. The Winter Fair has one person to judge all breeds.
“I started at 9am in the morning with the showmanship classes and then on to the individual breed classes and finished at 4.30pm.” he said. “It’s a great event. It’s all indoors in the middle of winter and a very big trade event with about 6500 people through the doors.” Rob was impressed by the quality of the competition. “The top cows would compete here across the breeds and as a judge that’s what you like to see,” he said. “It makes your job easier if you have those top-end cows to work with and then it’s up to my personal preference and what I like to separate them. As long as I can explain why, I’m happy and most people are too.”” Holsteins had greater numbers and more quality for the top end but there was also a good Jersey section, which was second to Holstein for numbers. “The Jersey cow that won would do well here (at IDW) and there was a young Jersey heifer that was outstanding, and I made her the interbreed champion heifer.”

The last few years have been a challenge across the country to keep cows fed I’m sure you all have looked at every available feed option. This article from Aug 92 was a timely reminder of what alternative feed products are available
Youth Groups were popular throughout the Association and the 1990’s had a regular Youth Page written by the legendry Uncle Reg. I recently ran into Vanessa Blum at IDW who despite not directly involved these days in milking cows, still has a great passion for the breed.

The modern Romeos most likely now resort to a Snapchat, Instagram or Tiktoc message rather than the tried and tested “Wink” to get a girls attention but a nice parody demonstrating the value of performance testing your cows. Whether its herd testing, classifying or showing your best, you can’t measure performance unless you test for it and when you have something good, the Jersey Journal is a great way to tell us all about it.
